Actually, you’re right, Creatia. I always have extra time to complete tasks for this reason. You might be allowed some extra time, or somebody to write for you or read the questions for tests. Make sure you speak to your school about this.

Yes, it could be to do with the way you process information – that’s how you read or hear the instructions somebody gives to you. That’s what happens to me.

The truth is that different strategies will work for different people. Find out what works best for you and use it. This will be particularly helpful later in life when you are working towards exams or planning your day at school or work. Forgetting to plan or not asking for help are the most common reasons to run out of time. Remember to work with your teacher or grown-up to make sure you have planned out enough time to complete tasks – and think about time for breaks if you need them.

Some people with dyslexia prefer instructions to be broken down, instead of receiving all the information at once. Maybe that’s you? Do you find it easier when you are asked to do one thing at a time? Do you ever struggle with time disappearing? I know I’ve got 30 minutes, but when I look up, I’ve only got five left and I’ve no idea where the other 25 have gone! Some people prefer to be able to see how much time they have left – there are lots of great visual timers or countdown clocks that can be set to light up when half or all your time is up. Maybe that’s you? Would it help to have a timer that flashed green, orange or red to let you know when time is counting down?

The most important thing to do where time is concerned is breathe. Sounds obvious, doesn’t it? When you have a task or a job to do, the first thing you should do is take a deep breath. 43

Consistently my spelling is terrible and I have an inability to remember even some basic adjectives. All of my children now correct my spelling, which is quite amusing, but also quite handy to be honest. I think autocorrect makes me even worse! In secondary school I used to go to what they would call Special Needs most days. And I’ll never forget one of the ways of making us get better was to have us read eight pages of Shakespeare to a full school assembly. It was really, really hard as you’re trying to read, but also trying to speak to the room, then when you look up at any one time there’ll be 30 boys giving you the w***** sign or various other forms of visual abuse. I was kind of fine with it, but it was awkward, or as my daughter would say, well awks.

Having had such a bad relationship with reading, writing and spelling when I was growing up, to now have such a long-term positive relationship with words is a really amazing achievement.

In situations when an autism brain receives too much information to process at once, it causes the person to experience overload, stress and anxiety. An autism brain can be capable of incredible levels of attention and perceive details that others miss. There are scientists, engineers, designers, artists, writers, musicians, teachers, parents and more who are on something called the autism spectrum.

One very important job of the brain is to filter and organize the incoming information that our senses receive. Our brain then decides what information we can ignore and what we should pay attention to. An autism brain can find this process difficult.

Hang on, I’m going to look up the autism spectrum. Autism sounds really interesting so far but there’s a lot to understand.

Autism was first officially identified and given its name in 1943 by a doctor named Leo Kanner. It was very poorly understood at the time and surprisingly there is still quite a lot of confusion, disagreement and misunderstanding. However, through scientific research and incredible real-life stories, people are now better at recognizing the strengths and advantages of autism. 15

Ah, autistic people love routine! They might have fewer hobbies because they’re spending heaps of time doing the things that they enjoy the most.

An autism brain can struggle to think flexibly and problem-solve in new situations and find it hard to adjust when routines are broken. Sometimes autistic people have routines that are not obvious or necessary to others but they help the person to feel organized, in control and calm. 23

Different creatures need different amounts of sleep depending on what they eat and how safe they feel. But all animals need sleep – sleep is ama-zzzzzzzzzz-ing.

Unlike our mobile devices, we don’t have on/off switches. Like other animals, we need to prepare for sleep. This can be by reading a book, being read a story by someone else, or just dimming the lights. Sleep is a habit and like other habits we have, some of them are good and some of them are not so good. What are your sleep habits like? How well do you prepare yourself for sleep, without the bright light of TV or a tablet computer shining in your eyes?

Which creature’s sleep patterns would you like? Be a giraffe, as they can even sleep standing up! They can do this by locking their knees, and this allows them to run away quickly when they need to escape from predators – after all, it’s a long way from lying down to getting up. Sometimes, they have to risk lying down and giving their necks and their bodies a rest – deep sleep is good.

The Red Arrows are planes that always fly overhead to honour the Queen’s birthday in the United Kingdom.

The words we use inside our head can make us feel confident, strong, powerful and happy, or make us feel bad, down, scared or worried.

But you can imagine that the Red Arrows fly over your head taking the unkind, nasty, unhelpful, critical voices of your friends, family or teachers with them, as those critical voices don’t even touch you – they simply go over your head like the Red Arrows flying on to more exciting places.
