FOUNTAIN VALLEY MALIA TRAN Bright blue balloons blowing in the air: an entrance to Heritage Park as well as Fountain Valley KIWIN’S first benefit bash! Thanks to the wonderful support and chaperoning from Tim Davis and other organizers, the event was a huge success. Members began filing in and occupying themselves with the variety of activities. Not only students at Fountain Valley High School attended, but the public ranging from all ages with a fee of $10 were welcome. The front of the beautiful park had a photobooth set up with a blue background and silver balloons spelling out “#thirsty”. A table of food was displayed for guests to enjoy delicious salad, fried rice, pasta, snacks, and drinks. The eyecatcher of the park was its gazebo which were decorated with streamers and used as a stage for announcements and performances. Throughout the evening, special performances by Jozie Mccraney, Sandra On and Friends, and the band Hormonal Oppression displayed an array of musical talents. Two information booths were set up in order to inform everyone the details of the Thirst Project and FV KIWIN’S input on the project with open donations. Club merchandise and a Raising Canes gift basket were also auctioned off. To appeal to those at a younger age, a crafts table was exhibited with painting and coloring projects. A total of 50 people showed up making a profit of about $800, Cecilia Nguyen has put together an extremely successful event contributing to the Thirst Project. 37

LA QUINTA GRETCHEN LAM What’s better than volunteering at a service event with countless friends? Volunteering at a service event with countless friends AND dogs! Paws FUR Pink is an annual dog-friendly run/walk dedicated to raising awareness and funds for breast and canine cancers! KIWINNERS woke up before the crack of dawn to head over to Irvine Regional Park. Although some volunteers overslept, everyone made it to the event on time! Despite the super chilly weather, members grouped up before checking in. KIWINNERS were then given awesome pink t-shirts, and with that, the event coordinators began to assign tasks. Members had a variety of tasks: organizing medals, filling water bowls, transporting prizes, and most importantly, playing with the dogs! Unfortunately, there were a lot more volunteers than duties, so a few KIWINNERS were not as busy as others. Nonetheless, members managed to split up the workload to ensure everyone was actively participating in the event! As both the sun and temperature began to rise, the start of the run/walk steadily approached. Once word had spread that it started, KIWINNERS took to their stations along the trail and at the finish line. Members cheered their hearts out for runners and walkers of all ages, genders, and species! Smiles made their ways onto everyone’s faces - volunteers and runners/walkers alike - as cheer and spirit spread throughout Irvine Regional Park. Even the dogs there showed their excitement through their wagging tails! As runners and walkers approached the finish line, volunteers began to pass out medals, congratulating the participants for their accomplishments. As the run/walk came to an end, volunteers started to help clean up. After the shift ended, members were free to play with all of the adorable dogs and talk with their owners! KIWINNERS learned some awesome, interesting things about both the dogs and the participants themselves! Overall, Paws Fur Pink was a very engaging service event that not only enabled KIWINNERS to help the community but also allow them to play with dogs! And who doesn’t love dogs?! As a result, LQ KIWIN’S cannot wait to come back!
