Los Amigos OC VISION WALK The sun began to heat up, perfect for a walk, as everyone started to arrive around 6:30 a.m. to help set up. We all gathered underneath the big red hat where we met up with fellow KIWIN’S and Key Club members as well as our own LAHS Key Club board who offered to join us at this event due to our small number of volunteers. For most of the morning, the event hosts instructed us through setting up tables and canopies for snacks, registration, and t-shirts. When this job was completed we waited patiently as everyone arrived to sign-in. While we waited, we gathered in a huge circle with everybody and participated in riddles and games with other clubs and got to know each other through ice-breakers! Soon, we were called back by the hostesses and they began to hand out yellow and blue pom-poms and cowbells for us to use to cheer on and encourage the runners/walkers along the track. In order to do this job, they brought us around the racetrack which went through the whole stadium! We were assigned spots where we stood and waited a little bit longer for the race to officially begin. A while later, people began to pour in, wearing the red Vision Walk T-Shirt. We grabbed our pom-poms and cheered them on, chanting KIWIN’S spirit cheers as well as our own school cheers. The runners replied back with smiles and waves as we jumped up and down in excitement for them. For 2 more long hours, we nearly lost our voices as we continuously motivated them and their cause. It really was Fall Rally all over again! As this went on, the hostesses met up with all the volunteers who were along the track and handed us water and granola bars as we continued to finish up our job. By the end of the race, we walked along the track ourselves to the front of the stadium in order to meet up with everybody. The hostesses offered us leftover T-Shirts to take home along with our volunteer ones, and before we cleaned up we grabbed extra water, snacks, and even made our own popcorn and cotton candy! The event finished off with raffle winners and further announcements. At the end of the event, their organization managed to raise more than their goal of $115,000! Most of these funds were donated to their cause as well as other team causes that were involved in this event. It was truly remarkable at how much assistance people can give one another. By the end of the race we helped put tables and extra shirts away in boxes and unfolded the canopies before we made our way home with our voices nearly gone for a worthy cause.

PANCAKE BREAKFAST

Marina HB KIWANIS 4TH OF JULY PANCAKE BREAKFAST 2018 “Pancakes, eggs, drinks, SAUSAGE” The smell of breakfast filled the air as KIWIN’S Clubs from Jet Division, Key Clubs from Division 4 West, and local Kiwanians worked hard to provide for the flood of hungry 4th of July Parade spectators and marathon runners at the annual Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast. Members began arriving around 5:30 AM at Lake Park near downtown Huntington Beach to help prepare for the big day. Despite the mouthwatering smells of pancakes and sausage cooking on the grill and local news stations filming, volunteers stayed focused, determined to work hard covering tables with placemats, hanging up banners around the eating area, and setting up tables for serving food and drinks. Drink dispensers with lemonade and coffee were carefully placed while heated trays were lined up for pancakes, eggs, and sausage along with utensils, napkins, syrup, and butter. At 7 AM, the pancake breakfast distribution began. Volunteers put their gloves on and customers began to pour in while a local radio station, 93.1 Jack FM played music for everyone to enjoy. From handing out food to running food from the grills to the serving tables, everyone was working together in an elaborate system so everything ran smoothly, ensuring that food was stocked and customers got their food and drinks in a timely fashion. We got many compliments on how quick and easy everything was. Other volunteers went out to the main parade pathway, Main Street, to advertise, cheering with signs to attract more customers, went around taking plates and cleaning the tables for the customers, or helped the elderly get their food. Unfortunately, about half-way through the breakfast, we completely ran out of eggs. Volunteers worked quickly to come up with a solution and were able to successfully solve the problem by handing out extra pancakes or sausage in place of the eggs to keep the customers happy and satisfied. By 10 AM, everything began winding down as the breakfast came to an end. Everyone was sweating from working hard in the warm sun. Volunteers took down tables, signs, and banners, cleaned up, and ate whatever leftovers there were for their breakfasts while happily recapping on their different experiences from the morning rush. Despite the early wake up call and busy morning, members were always smiling and thoroughly enjoyed the event. Marina KIWIN’S will certainly return again next year!
