GLOW APP 2016

De GLOW App 2016 op basis van IBeacon Technology is te downloaden in Google Play en de App Store. Met de GLOW App vind je alle informatie over de projecten binnen handbereik tijdens de wandeling, je kunt de projecten beoordelen maar ook meteen doorsturen naar je social media. Bezoekers kunnen zich ter plekke laten leiden door de App. De App is tweetalig; Nederlands en Engels.

The free GLOW App 2016 is based on IBeacon Technology and can be downloaded via Google Play and the App Store. Download the free GLOW App and follow the route by using GPS and receiving all the information on the GLOW projects during your GLOW walk. You can rate projects but also directly send posts to your social media. The App is availabe in Dutch and English.

In november staat Eindhoven gedurende acht avonden in het teken van lichtkunst. Dit jaar voor de elfde maal. GLOW pakt uit met bijzondere lichtprojecten in het thema City & Science. Zo’n veertig kunstenaars bieden met lichtinstallaties en lichtprojecties de toeschouwers een verrassend nieuwe kijk op de stad. Deze lichtkunstprojecten zijn met elkaar verbonden middels een looproute. For eight days in November, Eindhoven will be all about ‘Light Arts’. This year, for the eleventh time focusing on magnificent light projects evolving around the theme ‘City & Science’. With light installations and light projections, around forty artists offer the GLOW spectator a surprising new perspective on the city of Eindhoven.

GLOW IS ANDERS! Het werd me bij mijn aantreden als burgemeester van Eindhoven al meteen duidelijk gemaakt: in Eindhoven doen we alles anders. Als Nederland vanwege de naderende winter zich binnen opsluit, gaat Eindhoven naar buiten. Beginnend in september met ons bevrijdingsfeest op 18 september, gevolgd door de lichtjesroute, de Marathon en de Dutch Design Week in oktober. In november stromen we uit over de stad voor GLOW. Iedereen zit binnen, Eindhoven trekt erop uit. Destijds ontstond het idee om op het kruisvlak van design, cultuur, kunst en licht een evenement toe te voegen aan Eindhoven. Er bestond gewoonweg nog niets op dit gebied en de lichtstad verdiende als geen ander een toonaangevend evenement dat de stad letterlijk en figuurlijk zou laten stralen. Heel Nederland –en daarbuitenheeft inmiddels GLOW ontdekt: een steeds groeiend aantal mensen loopt de route. Dit jaar zeven kilometer langs 40 lichtkunstprojecten. Vorig jaar boekten we een recordaantal van 730.000 bezoekers! Daarmee is het qua bezoekersaantallen in tien jaar tijd opgeklommen tot het vierde vrij toegankelijke festival van Nederland. City & Science is dit jaar het thema. Een mooi thema: de lichtstad Eindhoven bewijst al sinds jaar en dag dat de combinatie van technologie en design voor prachtige dingen kan zorgen. En GLOW Next is dit jaar opgenomen in de hoofdroute en daarmee is het toegankelijker voor een groter publiek. Weinig evenementen passen zo goed bij de plaats waar ze worden gehouden als GLOW bij Eindhoven. Licht en GLOW zitten in het DNA van Eindhoven. GLOW IS SOMETHING ELSE! When I was appointed to be mayor of Eindhoven, it immediately dawned on me: in Eindhoven, things are done differently. While the whole country is getting ready to stay inside because of the forthcoming winter, the inhabitants of Eindhoven go outside. In September, we have our kick-off with the Liberation Feast on September 18th, immediately followed by the Route of Lights, to be continued by the Marathon and the Dutch Design Week in October, and in November we scatter all over the city for GLOW. With everyone inside, Eindhoven decides to go out. At that time, the idea arose to add an event to the city of Eindhoven which was to take place on the intersection of design culture, art and light. There simply wasn’t anything in that field and if any city deserved to have a world leading event which would make the city glow - literally and figuratively -, it would be Eindhoven. By now, all of The Netherlands and even far beyond have discovered GLOW: an ever growing number of people is walking the GLOW-route. And this year it’s a seven kilometres’ route along 40 light art works. As we welcomed a record number of 730,000 visitors last year, GLOW has reached the top four of freely accessible Dutch festivals in only ten years’ time. This year’s theme is City & Science. A beautiful theme as, for many years now, Eindhoven city of light, has proved that the combination of technology and design can result into the most amazing things. In contrast to former years, all GLOW Next projects will now be integrated into the main route. This makes the event even more accessible to the public. Only few events match the place in which they are held. But GLOW fits Eindhoven like a glove. Light and GLOW are really incorporated into the Eindhoven DNA as is shown by all Eindhoven residents who glow with pride, when it comes to GLOW. JOHN JORRITSMA - Mayor of Eindhoven

BESTE BEZOEKER Licht raakt de mens tot diep in haar wezen. Gerard Philips kon het niet kernachtiger verwoorden toen hij 100 jaar geleden bij het 25-jarige lustrum van Philips in een interview met het Handelsblad zei: “Licht is leven, licht is blijheid, licht is levendigheid”. Hoewel ogenschijnlijk gedateerd in ons technologische tijdperk, waarin datacombinaties lichtbronnen aansturen en tot leven brengen, is deze triptiek onwaarschijnlijk krachtig in zijn eenvoud en betekenis. Een helder kwalitatief motto voor een hedendaags lichtfestival. Zo opent het nieuwe Strategisch Plan 2017-2020 van GLOW. GLOW 2016 vormt na het jubileum van afgelopen jaar weer de start van een nieuwe ontwikkeling van GLOW. Als nieuw aangetreden voorzitter van het stichtingsbestuur GLOW ben ik trots op het feit dat al in 2015 was gekozen om de TU/E campus als plek voor experimenten in het kader van GLOW NEXT aan te wijzen. Zowel in GLOW als GLOW Next wordt het Talent op technologie, licht en design dat in onze regio Eindhoven aanwezig is, uitgedaagd om projecten te laten zien aan de bezoeker. U zult verbaasd staan wat op het gebied van zowel de oorsprong van licht als in de laatste High Tech toepassingen mogelijk is. GLOW zal weer een ontmoetingsplek zijn voor iedereen die zich graag laat verrassen over de bijzondere plekken in de stad. Verrassing, verbazing en verbeelding van zowel jong als oud. Want GLOW is van de stad en regio en voor haar inwoners en zij hebben GLOW in hun hart gesloten. En dat goede gevoel willen we graag weer oproepen bij u als bezoeker van GLOW. DEAR VISITOR Light touches mankind into its very core. A hundred years ago, Gerard Philips couldn’t express it more powerfully when he gave an interview to the Dutch newspaper ‘Handelsblad’ at Philips’25th anniversary. He said: “Light is life, light is happiness, light is liveliness”. It may sound outdated in this technological era in which data combinations control light sources and bring them to life. Yet, this triptych is incredibly powerful in its simplicity and significance. A clear, highquality motto for a contemporary festival. This is how GLOW’s latest Strategic Plan 2017-2020 opens. After last years’ anniversary, GLOW has already embarked upon a new development of the festival. As the newly appointed chairman of the GLOW Foundation Board, I am proud of the fact that, already in 2015, the University of Technology area was assigned to be the designated area for the GLOW Next experimental light artworks. In GLOW as well as in GLOW Next, talents in the field of technology, light and design, which is present in our Eindhoven region are challenged to show their projects to the visitor. You will be surprised at all the applications in the field of light origin as well as in the field of the latest High Tech. Again, GLOW is going to be the meeting point for anyone who likes to be taken by surprise by the extraordinary places in the city. GLOW 11 years History Het succes van GLOW was onvoorzien maar achteraf wel begrijpelijk: GLOW geeft vorm aan het DNA van Eindhoven. Sinds 1870 kwam de luciferindustrie op gang en in 1891 vestigde Philips er een gloeilampenfabriek. Tijdens de bevrijding op 18 september in 1944 door de geallieerden, werden soldaten door Eindhovenaren verwelkomd met lampen achter de ramen, daaruit is de Lichtjesroute ontstaan en bestaat nu nog. Van lucifers, naar gloeilampen en van Lichtjesroute naar GLOW. Eindhoven is ook de regio waar de meest talentvolle mensen uit de gehele wereld, hun schouders zetten onder het internationaal succes van deze stad. Eindhoven is gegroeid van een dorp naar één van de slimste regio’s van de wereld; in GLOW wordt dat zichtbaar en voelbaar. Het is zelfs uitgegroeid tot het grootste culturele gratis evenement van Nederland. Met in 2015 een recordaantal bezoekers van 730.000.

The GLOW success was unforeseen, yet in retrospective, understandable: GLOW shapes the Eindhoven DNA. In 1870, the match industry arose and in 1891, Philips established a light bulb factory here. On September 18th 1944, during the liberation of Eindhoven by the Allied Forces , soldiers were welcomed into Eindhoven with light behind the windows; the start of the socalled ‘Route of Lights’ which still exists today. From matches to light bulbs and from the Route of Lights to GLOW. EIndhoven is also the region where the most talented people of the world all work together at the international success of this city. EIndhoven has grown from a village to one of the smartest regions of the world; during GLOW, this is made visible and tangible. The event has even grown into the largest free cultural event of the Netherlands. With a record number of visitors of 730,000 in 2015. 8

GLOW 2020 GLOW is meer dan ooit tevoren aan het bouwen aan een internationaal platform voor innovatieve nieuwe projecten. Een platform voor kunstenaars, designers en technische talenten die actief zijn op het gebied van licht. Die starten als GLOW NEXT projecten. Dat zijn de innovatieve lichtwerken uiteindelijk hun weg vinden naar het grote podium van GLOW en de ambitie hebben om daarna de wereld over te gaan en podia te beklimmen van andere internationale lichtfestivals. Met de boodschap: ‘Made in Eindhoven.’ Een voorwaartse beweging die nieuwsgierig maakt. But now more than ever, GLOW is building at an international platform of innovative, new projects. A platform for artists, designer and technical talents who are active in the field of light. Which start als GLOW NEXT projects. Those are the innovative licht artworks which finally find their way towards the main stage of GLOW and have the ambition to travel the world to other international light festivals. Bringing the message “Made in Eindhoven”, it is a forward move bound to rouse curiosity.

THEMA 2016: CITY & SCIENCE GLOW accentueert de sterke band van Eindhoven met licht. Nu is Eindhoven meer dan ooit een pioniersstad en kweekvijver voor talent op creatief en technisch gebied. Door gespecialiseerde opleidingen en bedrijven heeft de stad een groot potentieel aan kennis. Dat is zichtbaar in de constante ontwikkeling van hoogwaardige technologie en spraakmakend design. Ingenieurs, designers, wetenschappers en kunstenaars werken onder andere aan vernieuwende lichtconcepten, -technieken en inzichten. Het thema vindt u terug in de route. Er is een City-route en een Science-route. GLOW highlights the strong connection between the city of Eindhoven and Light. Nowadays more than ever, Eindhoven has become a pioneering city and natural incubator for talents in the field of creativity and technology. By offering specialised educations and institutions, the city has an enormous knowledge potential. This is clearly visible in the constant development of high-quality technology and cutting-edge design. Amongst others, engineers, designers, scientists and artists work together to create innovative light concepts, - techniques and insights. The route reflects the theme. Dit jaar vind je vijf ‘Horecapleinen’ op de route. Inspirerende en verrassende horeca die passen bij de uitstraling van GLOW. Op ieder plein kan de bezoeker van GLOW een object beleven/ bekijken, ondertussen genieten van een drankje en een hapje. Op sommige pleinen kunt u zelfs ‘uniek dineren’. Op de meeste pleinen zal ook een toiletvoorziening aanwezig zijn. Tevens zullen vanuit deze ‘GLOW Pop Ups’ ook brochures, plattegronden en GLOW merchandise verkocht worden. De pleinen zijn tevens startpunten van de GLOW route.

This year, you’ll find five food courts along the GLOW Route. Inspiring and surprising bars & restaurants which fit the GLOW vibe. At every food court, you can experience and enjoy a work of art while enjoying a drink or snack. At some food courts it’s even possible dine in a unique way. Most food courts have toilet facilities. Furthermore, you can buy GLOW brochures, maps and merchandise at these ‘GLOW Pop Ups’. These food courts serve as starting points of the GLOW route.

KIES EEN ROUTE De GLOW Route is een looproute en bestaat dit jaar uit twee lussen. De City-route is blauw gekleurd en loopt door het stadscentrum. Daar vind je de projecten met gigantische 3D video-mapping op gebouwen, het kinderkunstproject en de interactieve schommels. Op de Science-route, die over het TU/e terrein gaat, vind je unieke innovatieve projecten die voor het eerst het licht zien, maar ook de recordpoging ‘langste beheersbare blikseminslag ooit. Per route ben je gemiddeld 2 tot 2,5 uur looptijd kwijt. Dus maak een keuze of kom gezellig nog eens een avond terug.

PICK A ROUTE The GLOW Route is a walking route consisting of two loops this year. The City route, which has the colour blue, runs through the city centre of Eindhoven. Here, you encounter the light artworks with gigantic 3D video mapping on buildings, the children’s light artwork and the interactive swings. Along the Science route (orange), which runs across the University of Technology site, you can discover unique and innovative projects that are exhibited for the very first time but you will also encounter the attempt to break the world record of ‘the longest containable lightning bolt ever’. Every route takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours. It might be practical to make a choice beforehand or why not come back another night?

GLOW SIDE PROJECT

Stationsplein Krassen met licht Studenten SintLucas: Aaron Boshoven, Clint van Laarhoven, Stan Smeets, Pim Roggeband

4 studenten van het SintLucas hebben het project ‘Krassen met licht’ speciaal voor GLOW 2016 ontwikkeld. De naam zegt het al: teken met licht jouw boodschap aan GLOW. Dit kunstwerk ligt daarmee geheel in de handen van de GLOW bezoeker. Iedereen is welkom om op deze muur van 3 x 2 meter te ‘tekenen’. Op het zwarte vlak wordt jouw boodschap vanzelf in kleuren zichtbaar. Plezier gegarandeerd, ook voor de jongere GLOW bezoeker.

Especially for GLOW 2016, four SintLucas’ students have created the work of art called ‘Krassen met licht’ (Light Scratches). The name says it all: draw your message to GLOW by using light. So, this work of art is completely in the hands of the GLOW visitor, who is invited to ‘make a drawing’ on this 3 by 2 meter wall. Your coloured message will automatically become visible on the black surface. Great fun is guaranteed, also for the younger GLOW visitor.

GLOW biedt de SintLucas studenten een podium voor hun projecten. Ze krijgen de kans om hun ideeën uit te voeren en te presenteren aan een groot publiek. Dat is een unieke kans. Dit jaar kun je drie door SintLucas studenten ontwikkelde GLOWprojecten vinden op het 18 Septemberplein, De Wal en aan De Zaale op het TU/e-terrein.

GLOW offers SintLucas students a platform for their projects. They are given the unique opportunity to implement their ideas and present them to a large audience. This year, you can enjoy three artworks, created by SintLucas students, on 18 Septemberplein, De Wal and at De Zaale on the University of Technology site.

Ivo Schoofs was eerder te gast met GLOW met zijn Large Pendulum Wave en vorig jaar met het project Large Fire Tornado. Beiden installaties maken inmiddels een succesvolle tour langs vele prominente festivals wereldwijd. ’Just because you are a character, doesn’t mean you have character.’ is de nieuwe, 21 meter hoge, installatie van deze Eindhovense lichtkunstenaar. In dit grote, kinetisch interactieve lichtkunstwerk verandert rotatie in translatie. Door middel van het gekleurde licht en de beweging ontstaan nieuwe karakters; een

nieuwe Eindhovense beeldtaal, die zowel vervreemd als verbind. De repeterende, wonderlijke beweging daagt de kijker uit telkens nieuwe structuren te ontdekken. Dit is de eerste permanente installatie van het project ‘ROUND ABOUT’ van Eindhoven247 B.V. Met behulp van blijvende projecten in de openbare ruimte maakt ROUND ABOUT de kracht van de regio op het gebied van Technologie, Design en Kennis, zichtbaar in de stad. In this large, kinetic interactive light artwork, rotation transforms into translation. The coloured light and movements create new characters; a new Eindhoven visual language, which has an alienating as well as a connecting

factor. The miraculous, repetitive movement challenges the spectator into constantly discovering new structures. This is the very first permanent installation of the Eindhoven247 Ltd. ROUND ABOUT project. By means of permanent projects in public space, ROUND ABOUT makes sure that the power of the region in the field of Technology, Design and Knowledge becomes visible in the city.

2 18 Septemberplein Tunnel of Light Fontys De ‘Tunnel of Light’ is ontwikkeld door drie studenten van de Fontys Hogeschool Engineering Elektrotechniek. Tijdens de minor ‘Be Creative’ zijn zij gestart met de bouw van een interactieve lichtinstallatie, die nu onderdeel uitmaakt van GLOW Next. Het resultaat is een levensgroot LED matrix, bestaande uit circa 3000 LED’s, die het decor vormt van een 3-dimensionale lichtervaring voor de GLOW bezoeker. Loop er maar eens doorheen en neem de besturing van het licht over. Werk samen met anderen en bereik grootse effecten of laat het geheel zijn eigen schouwspel creëren. Door de glazen zijwanden kun je het project ook van buitenaf bewonderen. Hoe dan ook, er staat je een bijzondere beleving te wachten! Het team bestaat uit 3 Fontys studenten aan de Hogeschool Engineering Elektrotechniek.

The ‘Tunnel of Light’ has been developed by three students of the Fontys School for Electrical Engineering. During their minor ‘Be Creative’, they started building an interactive light installation, which is now part of GLOW Next. The result is a life-size LED matrix, consisting of about 3,000 LED lights, which forms the scenery of a three-dimensional experience for the GLOW visitor. Go ahead, walk through it and take control of the lights. Co-operate with other visitors and create great effects together or simply leave it be, allowing it to create its own spectacle. Mathildelaan Wannaplay Wannaplayground Music by Effenaar

WANNAPLAY is een â&#x20AC;&#x153;urban playground for adultsâ&#x20AC;? waarin licht, muziek, stad en publiek samenkomen. Het kunstwerk bestaat uit een interactieve installatie van 16 schommels met lichtgevende zitjes. Tijdens het schommelen ontstaat er een spannend, bewegend lichtspel waarbij iedere schommel fungeert als instrument. Tezamen vormen alle schommels een orkest. Het geluidsontwerp van Mark Thur transformeert de beweging van iedere schommel in muziek, die speciaal voor GLOW door lokale componisten is gemaakt, i.s.m. Poppodium Effenaar.

Door de manier waarop je schommelt, heb je dus invloed op de compositie. WANNAPLAY is de eerste installatie van WANNAPLAYGROUND, een project van Boiten&Thunnissen. Muziektheaterregisseur Caecilia Thunnissen en scenograaf Jan Boiten voelden na jarenlang ervaring met muziektheater en concerten de behoefte om een nieuwe manier te zoeken om hedendaagse muziek dichter bij het publiek te brengen. Ze wilden het publiek uit de passieve stoel en het donkere theater halen. De rode pluche theaterstoelen zijn vervangen door bewegende schommelzitjes van licht in de nacht.

WANNAPLAY is an â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;urban playground for adultsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; in which light, music, city and audience come together. This work of art consists of an interactive installation of 16 swings with luminary seats. While swinging, an exciting play of light comes into motion in which every swing acts as a musical instrument. Together the swings form an genuine orchestra. The sound design by Mark Thur transforms the movement of each swing into music which has been created by local composers in collaboration with Pop Centre Effenaar, for GLOW only. So, the way you swing will have its impact on the composition.

WANNAPLAY is the first installation of WANNAPLAYGROUND, a project by Boiten&Thunissen. After years of experience with music theatre and concerts, music theatre director Caecilia Thunissen and scenographer Jan Boiten felt compelled to find new ways to bring contemporary music closer to the public. They wanted to get the audience out of their passive, dark theatre seats by replacing the red, velvet seats by moving, luminary swing seats.

GLOW Café The Black Ten ligt op het stukje Eindhoven wat tot voor kort onbegaanbaar terrein was voor het publiek; het voormalig Philips Lighting terrein. GLOW Café ‘The Black Ten’ is situated in an area of Eindhoven which, until recently, used to be inaccessible to the main public: the former Philips Lighting site. Right next to the former LAC building, where all Philips’ innovations were exhibited, Event Creation is building a restaurant and outdoor café. Never before has the connection between GLOW and the past been so tangible.

B LAC Studios Licht Gewicht Studenten Fontys Hogeschool Dit lichtkunstwerk is een optische Rube Goldbergmachine, genoemd naar de Amerikaanse cartoonist en uitvinder Rube Goldberg. Dit staat voor een complex apparaat dat een eenvoudige opgave indirect en omstandig uitvoert. De verschillende onderdelen zijn met elkaar verbonden en reageren in interactie op elkaar. De naam van het project ‘Licht Gewicht’ is ontstaan vanuit het thema waarbij licht in deze opstelling massa of gewicht lijkt te hebben. Het licht beweegt door de opstelling alsof het een materie is. Dit licht staat, als een soort goed, centraal bij elke onderdeel. De complete opstelling, ontwikkeld door studenten Technisch Natuurkunde en Engineering aan Fontys Hogescholen, bestaat uit 10 onderdelen die met LED strips aan elkaar verbonden zijn. De opstelling wordt automatisch geregeld en zal in een loop spelen.

This light artwork is an optical Rube Goldberg machine, named after the American cartoonist and inventor Rube Goldberg. The machine is a complex contraption that is deliberately overengineered in order to perform a simple task in a most complicated and indirect fashion. The different parts are connected to each other and interact. The name of the project ‘Light Weight’ arose from the theme in which light, in this formation, appears to have mass and weight. The light moves through the object as if it were substance. This kind of light, as a substance, is the central component of each part. The complete object, developed by students of Technical Physics and Engineering at Fontys Hogescholen, consists of 10 parts connected to each other by LED strips. The formation is automatically controlled and performs in a loop. LAC Studios Foederer Talent Award Stichting Foederer Talentenfonds Stichting Foederer Talentenfonds toont tijdens GLOW het werk van 20 genomineerden voor de Foederer Talent Award 2016. Elk jaar levert dit een verrassende expositie op met zeer uiteenlopende werken. Het is een expositie waar kunst en design samen komen. Het aanstromend talent interpreteert op geheel eigen wijze het thema licht. De winnaar van deze expositie wordt tijdens GLOW bekend gemaakt en wint daarmee een expositie van eigen werk in een gerenommeerd museum. Bezoekers van GLOW kunnen van 12 t/m 19 november stemmen op het werk waarvan zij vinden dat het de publieksprijs verdiend en zo kans maken op 2 eenjarige abonnementen op een Museumkaart. Lichtplein Step into the Light Michel Suk

De installatie ‘Step into the light’ vraagt van de GLOW bezoeker wat de naam van het project zegt: stap in het licht. Aarzel dus niet en ga onder de 4 meter hoge, cirkelvormige opstelling van lampen staan. Deze zogenaamde ‘sweetspot’ levert namelijk de sterkste, meest indrukwekkende beleving. Onder de cirkel ontstaat een volledig nieuwe gezichtspunt. De lichtbronnen lijken oneindig door te lopen richting hemel. Alsof je je in het oog van een orkaan bevindt, in je

eigen afgesloten wereld. In rust komen de lichtbundels samen tot één punt, zo lijkt het. Of is het een optische illusie? Door de individuele aansturing van de lampen worden verschillende lichtpatronen gecreëerd, die zowel binnen als buiten de lichtschacht een verrassend lijnenspel opleveren. Door de toevoeging van een geluidscompositie, ontstaat de behoefte om ritme, snelheid en metrum te koppelen aan de beweging van het licht.

The installation ‘Step into the light’ invites the GLOW-visitor to do exactly that what the title suggests. So go ahead, do not hesitate and step underneath the 4 meter high, circular construction of lights. In fact, it is this so-called ‘sweetspot’ which provides the strongest and most impressive experience. When you find yourself underneath the circle, an entirely new optic view appears. The light sources seem to continue indefinitely towards to sky. It’s almost as if you are in the eye of

a hurricane, in your own enclosed world. In resting position, the light beams join towards one central point, so it seems. Or is this just another optical illusion? Due to the individually controlled lights, a variety of light patterns is created which produces a spectacular interplay of light, inside as well as outside the light shaft. By adding a sound composition, the need arises to connect rhythm, speed and metre to the movement of the light.

5 Licht – zowel natuurlijk als artificieel– speelt in Titia Ex oeuvre de hoofdrol. Het medium licht werkt beeldbepalend: met licht manipuleert Ex de stemming en beleving van een ruimte. Haar lichtobjecten staan zelden op zichzelf, maar krijgen veelal betekenis doordat zij een dialoog aangaan met de omgeving. Bijvoorbeeld door in te gaan op de geschiedenis van een locatie of te spelen met het perspectief van de toeschouwer. Haar project Private Light focust op de geschiedenis van de oude gloeilampenfabriek en haar omgeving. Ooit was deze fabriek het hoogste punt van Eindhoven. Je ervaart de openbare ruimte en haar verborgen gebruikers opnieuw. Met een stil gebaar haalt het kunstwerk de fabriek uit haar schaduw en voor een moment wordt de stad persoonlijk, intiem: PRIVATE LIGHT. Ex’ monumentale werk is te ervaren op tientallen plekken in Nederland, zoals in de gevel van NS station Den Bosch (1998) of de prijswinnende lichtinstallatie Dolmen Light in Emmen (2015). Vorig jaar was haar interactieve licht installatie: Flower from the Universe te zien in het Parktheater in Eindhoven.

Light - natural as well as artificial - plays a key role in Titia Ex’s works. The medium light is iconic in that, by using light, Ex manipulates the mood and experience of any space. Her light artworks are rarely individual pieces as, most of the time, they get meaning by engaging in dialogue with the environment. For example, by addressing the history of a location or by playing with the spectator’s perspective. Het work of art ‘Private Light’ focusses on the history of the former light bulb factory and its surroundings. Once this factory was the highest point of Eindhoven. You’ll experience the public space and its hidden consumers all over again. With a quiet gesture, the work of art pulls the factory out of its shadows and, for a brief moment, the city becomes intimate: PRIVATE LIGHT. Ex’s monumental work can be experienced at dozens of locations in the Netherlands, some of them being the Train Station facade of Den Bosch (1998) and the awardwinning light installation ‘Dolmen Light’ in the city of Emmen (2015). Last year, her interactive light installation ‘Flower from the Universe’ was exhibited at Parktheater in Eindhoven.

Fens terrein Magical Garden Kari Kola

De Finse lichtkunstenaar Kari Kola heeft speciaal voor GLOW een 360-graden lichtobject ontwikkeld, getiteld Magical Garden. Voor deze editie heeft hij bewust voor de sfeerloze omgeving van een parkeerterrein gekozen. Met behulp van lichtkunst en soundscape, een analogie van de Engelse woorden sound en landscape (duidend op de akoestische omgeving), transformeert hij dit gebied in een magisch wonderland. De aanwezige groenvoorziening, wordt door hem verlicht en versterkt. “Ik wil een zo groot mogelijk contrast creëren met de oorspronkelijke staat van het gebied en zo de omgeving op een totaal nieuwe manier laten uitkomen”, aldus Kari Kola. Loop het terrein maar eens op en dompel je onder in deze mystieke sfeer. Het kunstwerk wordt geïntegreerd met het horecaplein dat zich ook op deze locatie bevindt.

Especially for GLOW, the Finnish light artist Kari Kola has developed a 360-degrees light object titled ‘Magical Garden’. For this edition, he deliberately chose a bleak parking area. Paradijslaan, De Kazerne Lightfall Paul Thursfield & Simon Rycroft Vol trots presenteert Philips Lighting Design, in samenwerking met Kazerne, de première van Paul Thursfield en Simon Rycroft’s nieuwe werk ‘Lightfall’. Het werk werd voor het eerst tentoongesteld tijdens de Dutch Design Week 2016 en wordt nu tijdens GLOW extra onder de aandacht gebracht. Lightfall is het laatste werk in een serie installaties die generatief en interactief licht en geluid ontdekken, als onderdeel van hun werk aan lichtervaringen bij Philips Lighting. Lightfall is onderdeel van de expositie ‘ESCAPE- embracing the freedom of beauty’ bij de Kazerne. De werken in de Kazerne expositie ESCAPE hebben stuk voor stuk een grote, soms zelfs lyrische zeggingskracht, die je voor even in vervoering brengt en de waan van de dag doet vergeten. Tijdens je ESCAPE word je omarmd door de vrijhaven die schoonheid biedt. Een vrijhaven zonder oordeel, zonder dogma’s en zonder angst. Het is tijd voor reflectie en inspiratie.

De mens heeft altijd de vurige wens gehad om de natuur te begrijpen en het aardse te ontstijgen. Hoe geavanceerd wetenschap en techniek ook mag zijn, sommige dingen zullen altijd buiten bereik blijven. ‘In 20 Steps’ is een eerbetoon aan de mensheid en zijn eeuwige drang en doorzettingsvermogen om te leren vliegen. Studio Drift ontwikkelde ‘In 20 Steps’ voor de biennale van Venetië in 2015. Deze ruimtelijke, kinetische installatie bestaat uit twintig paar delicate glazen buizen. De glazen ‘vleugels’ laten op abstracte wijze twintig fasen van vliegen zien. Tegelijkertijd toont het werk de totale vleugelslag op één moment. De bewegingen worden gedreven door 20 motoren die onderling met elkaar communiceren. De keuze om glas te gebruiken onderstreept de subtiliteit van de beweging en de kwetsbaarheid van de natuur.

‘In 20 Steps’ is a tribute to the human desire to fly, despite the force of gravity and the poetry of persistence in the face of adversity. Studio Drift is intrigued by the continuous attempts of humankind to deal with its limitations, so miraculously opposed to nature as these ventures might be. Humankind has always had the desire to fully understand nature and to detach itself from earthly ties. No matter how far science has come, some things are likely to remain forever out of reach. ‘In 20 Steps’ is a spatial, kinetic installation, constructed of a set of 20 delicate glass wings that represent all the different steps of flying in an abstract way. At the same time, the piece captures flight in a single moment. The glass emphasizes the fragility of the movement and of nature itself. The moving glass breaks the natural light in space and reflects it as moving rays.

GLOW biedt de SintLucas studenten een podium voor hun projecten. Ze krijgen de kans om hun ideeën uit te voeren en te presenteren aan een groot publiek. Dat is een unieke kans. Dit jaar kun je drie door SintLucas studenten ontwikkelde GLOW projecten vinden op het 18 Septemberplein, De Wal en aan De Zaale op het TU/e terrein.

Who doesn’t know them from the old days: tin cans connected by a rope, meant to communicate with each another / as a means of communication between two persons. LED’s Talk takes this piece of nostalgia to the next level having created a modern version. In this project communication among the visitors of GLOW is made visible with sensors and LEDs. Licht geeft objecten hun visuele realiteit en maakt ze daardoor haast tastbaar voor het publiek. Omdat we meestal onze ogen letterlijk geloven, realiseren we vaak niet dat licht altijd in beweging is. Wanneer het beelden creëert, verandert het onze daadwerkelijke waarneming. Op geheel eigen wijze vertonen de kunstwerken de illusie van constant veranderende ruimtes. Zij richten zich op en spelen met de flinterdunne lijn tussen wat we waarnemen en wat we dénken waar te nemen. Alle kunstenaars combineren de dynamiek van licht, technologie en kunst. Een bijzonder gegeven is de unieke samenwerking binnen dit project tussen de TU/e en het Van Abbemuseum; beiden jubilarissen dit jaar. Om dit te vieren, koppelen deze wereldwijd gerenommeerde instituten op bijzondere wijze kunst aan technologie. Zwevend boven het oppervlak van de vijver op het TU/e terrein wordt een projectie gerecreëerd van het kunstwerk ‘Licht-Raum-Modulator’ van de Hongaarse kunstenaar László Moholy-Nagy, één van de 9 kunstwerken in de tentoonstelling.

During GLOW 2016 Van Abbemuseum presents the exhibition ‘A Place Beyond Belief’. An art project, consisting of nine works of art, about the perception of reality and illusion, created by light. Light gives objects their visual reality thus making them almost tangible to the public. Because we are used to trust our eyes, we often do not realize that light is always in movement. When light creates images, it constantly changes our actual perception. In their own, unique way, the artworks in this exhibition show the illusion of spaces constantly changing. They focus on and play with the fine line between actual perception and that what we believe to perceive. All artists combine the dynamics of light, technology and art. They modulate our sense of reality by creating these illusions that provoke our perception. Together they form ‘A Place Beyond Belief’. This project came into being through a unique collaboration between the University of Technology Eindhoven and Van Abbemuseum, both celebrating their anniversaries. To commemorate this, both worldfamous institutes decided to work together during GLOW this year by connecting technology to art in a very special manner. Met diverse indrukwekkende projecties heeft Onionlab zich voorgaande jaren al bewezen als echte publiekstrekker. Ook dit jaar staat het artiestengezelschap garant voor een 3D spektakelstuk.

Oude Stadsgracht / DELA gebouw Fantastic Planet Amanda Parer

12 meter hoge, mensachtige figuren vallen tijdens GLOW de planeet aan. Het lijkt alsof ze net zijn geland op aarde en nu bedachtzaam onze ‘fantastische planeet’ ontdekken. De Australische kunstenares Amanda Parer raakte voor dit project geïnspireerd door de Tsjechisch/Franse film ‘Fantastic Planet’ uit 1973. Deze sciencefiction film schetst het verhaal van een ondenkbare, verre toekomst waarin de mensheid zich als wild ras begeeft in een wereld vol gigantische mensachtigen.

Wat brengen deze wezens bij jou teweeg? Kijk jij door deze wezens nu anders naar de omgeving? De figuren zijn gemaakt van water- en winddicht materiaal dat wordt opgeblazen door windmachines en van binnenuit worden verlicht door LED schijnwerpers en lichtlijnen. Amanda Parer exposeert met installaties van mensen dierachtige figuren op festivals over de hele wereld en won hiermee diverse prijzen.

Humanoid figures, twelve meters high, will invade the planet this year. These giants from afar will give the festival goers the impression that they have just landed and are cautiously exploring our ‘fantastic planet’. It was the 1973 Czech/ French film “Fantastic Planet” which inspired Australian artist Amanda Parker to create this light installation. The science fiction movie depicts the story of an unimaginable, distant future in which human beings are a savage race in a world full of gargantuan humanoids.

How do these creatures make you feel? Do they change the way you look at your environment? The humanoid forms are in fact inflatables made out of white nylon 210, a sturdy fire proof and water resistant material. Lichtkunst maken met je technische skills. Hack GLOW brengt talentvolle jonge programmeurs (8-15 jaar) samen met ervaren programmeurs, techneuten en creatieven. In het eerste weekeinde van GLOW, 12 en 13 november, sluiten ze zich 2x8 uur op bij Dynamo om eigen lichtobjecten te maken. Dat doen ze onder begeleiding van vrijwilligers en coaches. De hackaton wordt voor de tweede keer georganiseerd en brengt techies uit heel de regio samen. Motivatie en talent staan centraal, de stad helpt met materialen, kennis en menskracht. Making Light Art by using your technical skills. Hack GLOW unites talented, young programmers (8-15 years old) with professional programmers, technicians and creative spirits. During the first GLOW weekend of November 12th to 13th, they will lock themselves up twice at Dynamo for 8 hours at a stretch, in order to create their own light objects. They will do so, supported by volunteers and coaches. The hackathon is going to be organised for the second time uniting techies from all over the region. Motivation and talent is most important and the city of Eindhoven will support this group by offering material, knowledge and manpower. Youngsters can participate for free. 11 Catharinakerk Labyrinth of Passion Les Orpailleurs de Lumière Dit jaar verandert de Catharinakerk in het drieluik ‘Tuin der Lusten’, gebaseerd op Jheronimus Bosch, ter herdenking aan zijn 500ste sterfdag in 2016. Zijn geïllustreerde, bizarre wereld komt tijdens deze GLOW editie tot leven op Verdi’s muziek ‘Dies Irae’. De meest absurde taferelen heten je welkom in de hypnotische wereld van Jheronimus Bosch; zwarte monsters en vliegende draken in een loodgrijze hemel. De Heilige Geest en waanzinnige kluizenaars worden blootgesteld aan de meest vreselijke verleidingen. Een imposant eerbetoon aan een wereldberoemd kunstenaar ontworpen door het Franse creatief collectief van specialisten op het gebied van geluid, licht, beeld en video: Les Orpailleurs de Lumière. Voor de terugkerende GLOW bezoeker geen onbekende artiesten. Tijdens GLOW 2012 gaven zij hun visitekaartje af met een indrukwekkende projectie op de Catharinakerk. Voor de editie 2014 haalden ze alles uit de kast met de projectie op twee villa’s in de statige Parklaan. This year, Catharina Church will be transformed into the triptych ‘Garden of Delights’ based on Jheronimus Bosch’ hypnotic world, in commemoration of his death 500 years ago. This GLOW edition, Bosch’ pictorial, bizarre world comes to life to Verdi’s music ‘Dies Irae’. The most absurd scenes welcome you into the world of Jheronimus Bosch: black monsters and flying dragons in a slate grey sky. The Holy Spirit and insane hermits are exposed to the most horrific temptations. Heuvel Eindhoven Light Dome Har Hollands

Op last van brandweer kunnen hier ca 400 bezoekers tegelijkertijd het project bewonderen By order of the Eindhoven fire-department this project is to be visited by groups of max 400 people each session.

Vorig jaar was in het winkelcentrum de Heuvel het, in opbouw zijnde, project â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Lichtkoepelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; van de Eindhovense lichtarchitect Har Hollands voor het eerst in ruwe vorm te zien. Dit jaar zien wij de voltooide lichtinstallatie zoals deze oorspronkelijk bedacht was.

Last year, the project Light Dome, created by the Eindhoven light artist Har Hollands, was still under construction and could be seen in its first raw form. This year, we can enjoy the fully completed light installation as it had originally been designed.

Lichtkoepel bestaat uit 121 licht doorschijnende buizen. Elke buis wordt aan een kabel gehangen en kan door middel van een motor op diverse hoogtes worden gepositioneerd. Door deze kabel wordt ook de stroom geleid die de vele ledlampen in elke buis van energie voorzien om een pallet van kleuren te genereren. Geluid van 8 luidsprekers verhogen de ruimtelijke werking. The light dome consists of 121 light-transparent tubes, provided with reflecting layers. Every tube is attached to a cable and can be positioned at different heights, operated by an engine. The cable conducts electricity to the 20 light sources in each tube, thus generating a palette of colours. Eight loudspeakers will produce the sound to enhance the spatial effect. Jan van Lieshoutstraat Small Victims, Large Numbers Power of Art House Small Victims, Large Numbers is een artistiek en poëtisch eerbetoon aan alle kinderen die in de afgelopen tien jaar in Nederland door kindermishandeling om het leven kwamen: gemiddeld zo’n 52 kinderen per jaar. Creatief collectief Power of Art House wil met het kunstwerk een indringend licht schijnen op alle kinderen die slachtoffer werden - en worden - van huiselijk geweld. Doel is om op kunstzinnige en inspirerende wijze het publieke debat over dit thema op gang te brengen. Small Victims, Large Numbers was afgelopen juni te zien op het Museumplein in Amsterdam. Het kunstwerk kreeg toen al veel (media)aandacht. Tijdens GLOW zal een ‘special edition’ van de installatie, die specifiek voor GLOW ontwikkeld werd, te zien zijn. In het kader van de Week tegen de Kindermishandeling, van 14 t/m 20 november, zal het kunstwerk tevens op meerdere plekken in het land verschijnen.

‘Small victims, Large numbers’ is an artistic and poetic tribute to all children in the Netherlands who lost their lives due to child abuse in the last decade: an average of approximately 52 children a year. With this work of art, the creative collective Power of Art House wants to shine a probing light on all the children who have been - and are going to be - a victim of domestic abuse. The aim is to start the public debate on this theme, in an artistic and inspiring manner. Small Victims, Large Numbers was exhibited on Museumplein, Amsterdam, last June. At the time this work of art already received a lot of (media) attention. During GLOW, a ‘special edition’ of the installation, specifically created for GLOW, will be on display. From November 14th until November 20th, known as ‘The Week against Child Abuse’, the work of art will also be exhibited at several locations in the Netherlands. www.power-of-art.nl

Markt COCONS ruim 2500 basisschool leerlingen

Voor het zesde jaar op rij organiseert CultuurStation een project voor leerlingen in het primair onderwijs. Na de Lampenkappen (2011), de Bloemenzee (2012), de Fladderaars (2013), de Squares (2014) en de Kroonlichters van vorig jaar gaan ruim 2.500 leerlingen uit groep 5 en 7 van 40 basisscholen in Eindhoven dit jaar COCONS maken. Met verschillende materialen en technieken bewerken de leerlingen per klas een stuk kippengaas welke uiteindelijk omgevormd wordt tot een reuze cocon van 2 meter hoog! Ruim 110 cocons vormen samen het lichtkunstwerk van de Eindhovense scholen. We kijken uit naar het ongetwijfeld prachtige eindresultaat.

Om leerkrachten te ondersteunen, ontwikkelt CultuurStation een lesbrief voor het ontwerpen en vervaardigen van de cocons. Ook organiseert zij een gratis workshop waarin zij lesideeĂŤn, kunstzinnige tips, aanwijzingen over het materiaalgebruik en technische mogelijkheden aangereikt krijgen. De afgelopen jaren is GLOW for KIDS een succesformule gebleken. Het project draagt bij aan de creatieve ontwikkeling van kinderen, maar biedt hen ook een bijzondere ervaring: in gezelschap van ouders, leerkrachten of andere kinderen te midden van de GLOW-projecten hun eigen kunstwerk ontdekken.

GLOW PROJECT

For the sixth year in a row, ‘Cultuurstation’ is going to organise a side project for primary school pupils. After the ‘Lampenkappen’ (2011), the ‘Bloemenzee’ (2012), the ‘Fladderaars’ (2013) , ‘Squares’ (2014) and ‘Kroonlichters’ in 2015, this year’s group 5 and group 7 pupils of forty Eindhoven primary schools, have created ‘Cocoons’. Using different materials and techniques, the pupils of each class worked on a piece of chicken wire to be eventually transformed into a giant two metre high cocoon. As soon as the more than 110 cocoons are placed together, a light artwork of the Eindhoven primary schools will appear. We are already looking forward to the, undoubtedly, spectacular result.

To support the teachers, ‘Cultuurstation’ developed a letter of instruction as well as a free workshop in which the teachers are provided with ideas, artistic tips, instructions on the use of materials and technical options. The last couple of years, GLOW for KIDS has turned out to be a success formula. This project not only contributes to the creative development of children, it also offers them an extraordinary experience: discovering their own artwork amidst all the other GLOW projects in the company of parents, teachers or other children.

Effenaar Idioms Hartung & Trenz Muziek/ Music: Anton Zinkl

Effenaar is waarschijnlijk de meest bekende popzaal in Nederland. Wat begon in de jaren 70 als een plek voor maatschappijkritische jongeren, groeide uit tot een poppodium met aanzien. In 2005 onderging het gebouw een metamorfose. Architectenbureau MVRDV ontwierp dit kubusachtig totaal concept met grote ruimtes en glazen wanden aan de vooren achterzijde. Het Duitse kunstenaarsduo Hartung & Trenz gebruikt het gebouw als uitgangspunt voor hun licht-tekst installatie en transformeert de voorzijde in een lichtdoos waarop wordt geschreven met korte zinnen, zogenaamde idiomen. Omdat idiomen snel worden geassocieerd met popliedjes, is de functie van het gebouw, zonder verder uitleg en achtergrondinformatie, al duidelijk.

Tevens communiceren deze zinnen met het observerende publiek en nodigen zij hen uit tot een dialoog. De typografische projectie van Hartung & Trenz zet de constructie van het kubusachtige gebouw centraal, corresponderend met de secties en segmenten van letters en woordfragmenten. Wat op het eerste gezicht een verandering van architectonische elementen door bewegende lichtoppervlakten lijkt, gaat langzaam over in typografische karakters, letters, woorden, zinnen en idiomen. Tesamen bedekken ze de gehele voorzijde en laten het stralen. Schrijven, taal, licht en de dynamiek van animatie vloeien samen in een visueel geluid.

GLOW PROJECT

The Effenaar is probably the most famous venue for pop music and youth culture in the Netherlands. What once started as a meeting centre for socio-critical youngsters has evolved into a prestigious pop-stage. The innovative architect bureau MVRDV was commissioned to design a new EFFENAAR, which opened in October of 2005. The building had undergone a complete metamorphosis through the architectsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; design of a cubic, constructivist total space concept, with large areas of glass structuring the front and the back. The German artist-duo Hartung & Trenz played with the concept of a light-text-installation and transformed the main facade of the EFFENAAR into a light box, on which short phrases are written: the so-called IDIOMS. As idioms are easily associated with pop songs, the function

of the building is immediately recognized, without further need of explanation or background knowledge. At the same the idioms communicate with the observing public, inviting it to start a dialogue. The typographical projection of Hartung and Trenz adapts to the clear cubic construction and seeks correspondence with sections and segments of letters and oversized word fragments. What, at first glance, looks like an adaptation of architectural elements in moving light surfaces, gradually condenses into typographical characters, letters, words, phrases and idioms which cover the entire facade as text areas and makes it shine. 14 Stationsweg Lucio Linea Wisse Trooster & Troy Reugebrink ’s Avonds worden de takken op een speelse en mystieke wijze uitgelicht door ogenschijnlijk miljoenen vuurvliegjes die boven de straat zweven. De groene en rode punten van de lasers brengen een dynamisch lijnenspel teweeg op de oppervlaktes die ze aanraken. Op de foto’s ontknopen deze zich tot de verrassing van de fotograaf. Door de wind en de beweging van de laser komt het licht tot leven terwijl het door de bomen danst. Lucio Linea is ontwikkeld door Troy Reugebrink en Wisse Trooster van byLight in een project van Openlight, creative lab van het Intelligent Lighting Institute van de TU/e. Zij onderzochten hoe licht het ervaren van een publieke ruimte kan beïnvloeden. In samenwerking met lichtarchitect Har Hollands.

At night the branches of the trees are lit up with a playful and mystical light, which resembles millions of fireflies floating around in mid air. The green and red points of the lasers create dynamic lines on the surfaces they touch, which is a joy to capture on camera. It is the natural effect of the wind and movement of the laser that give the floating lights life, as they dance around the tree. Lucio Linea has been developed by Troy Reugebrink and Wisse Trooster from byLight in a project for Openlight, the creative lab from the Intelligent Lighting Institute of the TU/e. KPN Gebouw Cortex Machine Tom Dekeyvere

De installatie ‘Cortex Machine’ toont de complexe verbanden tussen de geometrische patronen die in en door elkaar groeien in de hersenen. De patronen komen vanuit de toeschouwers en worden samengevoegd in een groot web van touwen. Deze bundel van touwen draagt de individuele data uit het zenuwstelsel (gedachten, emoties, instincten) over in de structuur van een kunstmatig gecreëerd super-brein. De ‘Machine’ verzamelt al deze informatie gelijktijdig en transformeert het in data die door elektronische draden en satellieten de digitale wereld worden

ingestuurd. Geluiden van knisperende hersencellen, kleuren en lichtstralen vinden hun weg naar het KPN gebouw en worden naar parallelle werelden verzonden. Klaar om te versturen, downloaden en streamen... Tom Dekyvere verkent de diepere lagen van realiteit en geest. Net als de alchemisten van vroeger, zoekende naar onverwachte verbindingen, op zoek naar de grenzen tussen natuur en technologie, tussen mens en robot, tussen dood en levende materie.

The light installation “Cortex Machine” shows the intricate interrelation of the geometric patterns which are interwoven in the brain. These patterns actually derive from the spectators and are combined into a big web of ropes. This collection of ropes transfers the individual data of the nervous system ( thoughts, emotions, instincts) into the structure of an artificial super-brain. The “Machine” collects all this information simultaneously and transforms it into data that is spread into the digital world by electronic wires and satellites. Sounds of

crisping brain cells, colours and light beams find their way to the KPN tower and are transmitted to parallel worlds; ready to be transferred, downloaded and streamed… Tom Dekyvere explores the deeper layers of reality and mind. De Tesla Coil keert terug naar GLOW! Ditmaal zijn de bliksems te zien in de vijver van kunstwerk SOH 19 van Alex Vermeulen, de bekende vijver met de Boeddha en de drijvende eieren met zonnecellen. De Boeddha wordt verheven door een waterpartij. Bliksemstralen van de Tesla Coil slaan in rond het beeld, en in het water. Wist je dat het leven op aarde zo is ontstaan?

Bliksemstralen, lucht en water vormden samen aminozuren, de basis van DNA. Op en in de waterpartij wordt het moleculaire ontstaan van het leven in beeld gebracht door middel van projecties van de chemische oer processen. Tussen de bliksemstralen door hoor je speciaal gecomponeerde muziek van componist Eddy de Clercq.

Tesla Coil returns to GLOW! This year, you can admire the lightning bolts striking at the pond of the artwork â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;SOH 19â&#x20AC;&#x2122; by artist Alex Vermeulen, the well-known pond with the Buddha in the centre surrounded by floating eggs with solar panels.The Buddha is elevated above the water. The lightning bolts, which are generated by the Tesla Coil, strike the water and in and around the Buddha statue.

Did you know that life on earth started out this way? Together, lightning bolts, air and water became amino acids, the basis of DNA. Up and in the water, the molecular beginning of life is depicted by projections of chemical prehistoric processes. Between the lightning bolts, you hear music by composer Eddy de Clercq, especially created for this work of art.

Wat gebeurt er allemaal op een universiteit? Een heleboel! Deze installatie biedt de kijker een blik in een van de gebouwen op het TU/e terrein, in dit geval het Vertigo gebouw van de faculteit Bouwkunde. Middels een ritmisch schouwspel van krachtige schaduwen laat deze installatie niet-gebouwde projecten van studenten zien. Verschillende perspectieven brengen al hun harde werk tot leven. Jurre van Kuijk en Maisa van Genderen zijn bouwkunde studenten aan de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e). De afgelopen twee jaren hebben zij de Honors Light Force track gedaan, aangeboden door de Honors Academy en Openlight. In dit traject is de installatie Frederik op GLOW Next 2015 ontworpen. GLOW NEXT PROJECT

What is it thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going on universities? Quite a lot, in fact! This installation allows the viewer to look inside one of the buildings of the TU/e campus, in particular the Vertigo building of the faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning. By means of a rhythmic spectacle of powerful shadows this installation shows projects created by students, that have yet been unbuilt. Different perspectives bring all their hard labour to life. Jurre van Kuijk and Maisa van Genderen are both students at the faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning of the Technical University Eindhoven (TU/e). For the last two years, they have been working on the Honors Light Force track, offered by the Honors Academy and Openlight. It was during this process that the installation Frederik was designed at GLOW Next 2015. Resulting from the Frederik installation, installation Unbuilt came into being as an additional project.

Limbopad Het Oneindelicke Labyrint TU/e

De studenten werktuigbouwkunde van de studievereniging- W.S.V. Simon Stevinhebben een groots doolhof gebouwd voor het Auditorium op de campus van de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e). Hiermee openen zijn de festiviteiten die gevierd zullen worden ter ere van de 60e verjaardag van de vereniging. Wie denkt aan studenten, denkt ongetwijfeld ook aan bier. Als inherent aspect van het studentenleven wil daardoor nog wel eens het imago beklijven dat studenten alleen maar staan te ‘pilsen’. Om te laten zien dat studenten ook nuttige dingen met bier kunnen doen en om het geleerde in de praktijk te brengen, hebben de studenten het labyrint gemaakt uit bierkratjes van brouwerij Bavaria. Het bouwwerk bestaat uit wel 12.000 bierkratjes en is 40 bij 45 meter, het grootse ooit gebouwd. Geïnspireerd door het Griekse mythologische “Daedalus Labyrinth” van Koning Minos hebben de werktuigbouwers een labyrint gebouwd waar de GLOW-bezoeker zich kan laten verrassen. Als extra spanning zal het doolhof donker zijn en kan het verkend worden met zaklampen.

To open the 60th anniversary of the Student Association W.S.V. Simon Stevin, students of Mechanical Engineering have built a grand labyrinth in front of the Auditorium on the campus of the University of Technology (TU/e). Besides studying and project-related work, students are also known to enjoy a tasty beer every once in a while. Yet, to bring into perspective the “boozing image”, these students chose to combine their knowledge of mechanical engineering and beer by creating an infinite labyrinth of beer crates of the Dutch Bavaria brewery. The labyrinth consists of 12,000 beer bottle crates and covers an area of 40 by 45 meters, the largest ever built. Inspired by the Greek mythological “Daedelaus Labyrinth” of King Minos, the engineering students intend to surprise the GLOW 2016 visitor. As an extra dimension the labyrinth is dark and can be explored with flashlights.

De Wielen Photonic modulation of light and space TU/e + Van Abbemuseum + Ambianti B.V.

Dit project is tot stand gekomen door een unieke samenwerking tussen de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e) en het Van Abbemuseum: beiden jubilarissen dit jaar. Om dit te vieren, vinden deze wereldwijd gerenommeerde instituten elkaar dit jaar tijdens GLOW en koppelen zij op bijzondere wijze technologie aan kunst. Zwevend boven het oppervlak van de vijver op het TU/e terrein worden de sfeer, de belichtingsomstandigheden en een projectie van het kunstwerk ‘Licht-Raum-Modulator’ van de Hongaarse kunstenaar László Moholy-Nagy, gecreëerd. Dit kunstwerk is onderdeel van de Museum Special die tijdens

GLOW in het Van Abbemuseum plaatsvindt. Het kunstwerk is in de weken voor GLOW door de TU/e omgezet in een virtuele vorm die nu, met de hulp van de intelligente lichttechnologie van Ambianti, op een transparante lichtkubus wordt weergegeven. 20,000 full color LED lampjes worden via een ingebouwde supercomputer algoritmisch bestuurd om het effect van het originele kunstwerk in een open ruimte te recreëren. Het resultaat is een voortdurend spel van bewegende onderdelen die, samen met de omgeving, zorgen voor een spannende lichtervaring.

This project came into being through a unique collaboration between the University of Technology Eindhoven (TU/e) and Van Abbemuseum: both celebrating their anniversaries. To commemorate this, both world-famous institutes decided to work together during GLOW this year by connecting technology to art in a very special manner. Hovering above the surface of the pond at the University of Technology’s compound, there is this recreation of the Hungarian László Moholy-Nagy’s artwork, called ‘Licht-Raum-Modulator’; a projection in the original lighting conditions creating the self-same atmosphere. This work of art is part

of the Museum Special which takes place at Van Abbemuseum during GLOW. During the weeks before GLOW, this piece of art has been transformed by the University of Technology into a virtual form which, with the help of the intelligent light technology of Ambianti, is now shown on a transparent light cube. Twenty-thousand full colour LED lights are algorithmically controlled by a built-in supercomputer in order to recreate the original work of art in an open space. The result is an ongoing play of moving parts which, together with the surroundings, create an exciting light experience.

GLOW NEXT PROJECT

19 Wanneer een lamp aangaat zet het licht zich in beweging en verdringt het de duisternis door in iedere hoek van de ruimte te stromen. Licht beweegt zich daarbij niet vrij, maar wordt beïnvloed door de oppervlaktes en randen van de ruimte. Een beïnvloeding die zonder visuele perceptie niet mogelijk zou zijn. Wanneer een grote groep mensen zich in beweging zet is er ook sprake van stroming. Dergelijke crowd flows worden ook beïnvloed door de fysieke omgeving, waaronder het licht. In de Markthal doet het TU/e Intelligent Lighting Institute onderzoek naar de invloed van licht op gedrag van mensen. De Markthal is een Living Lab, geen traditioneel laboratorium ergens diep in de gebouwen van de academie, maar in de echte leef- en werkomgeving van mensen. Tijdens Glow staat de Markthal in het teken van stroming van mensen en stroming van licht. Geniet van de dynamische lichtpatronen in de Markthal en ontdek samen met ons wat licht kan doen op het gebied van crowd flows. Influx is een initiatief van het TU/e Intelligent Lighting Institute, gecreëerd door studenten Sam van Gaal, Bastiaan van Hout, Bert Maas, Jasper Meeusen, Daan Meister en Tom van Rooij, Federico Toschi, Joep LeBlanc onder begeleiding van Antal Haans, Alessandro Corbetta en Studio Philip Ross. Het TU/e Intelligent Lighting Institute (ILI) onderzoekt nieuwe, intelligente lichtoplossingen die mogelijk zijn gemaakt door de introductie van LED technologie met de nadruk op hoe deze oplossing mensen kunnen beïnvloeden. When a light is turned on, the light itself starts to move and pushes away the darkness by flowing into every nook and cranny. During this process, the light doesn’t move freely but is influenced by the surfaces and edges of the area. Such an influence could never be possible without visual perception. Whenever a large group of people starts moving, you can also speak of a flow. Such crowd flows are also influenced by the physical surroundings, among which: light. At the Markthal, the Intelligent Lighting Institute of the University of Technology researches the influence of light on the behaviour of human beings. The Markthal is a Living Lab, not the traditionally hidden laboratory in the dark corners of the academy, but a lab in the real, living- and working environment of people. During GLOW, the Markthal will be all about the flow of people and the flow of light. Enjoy the dynamic light patterns at the Markthal and discover how light affects the crowd flows. De lichtinstallatie AnTUenna bestaat uit meer dan 10.000 LED-jes die zijn bevestigd aan de schoorsteen op de groene loper van TU/e campus. Deze LED-jes genereren rood, groen en blauw licht en worden individueel aangestuurd in intensiteit en kleur door een centraal besturing systeem. De lichtpunten zijn in ringen van 60 LED-jes rondom de schoorsteen gegroepeerd, waarbij de afstand tussen de twee bovenste ringen begint bij 15 cm. en oploopt tot enkele meters voor de onderste twee ringen. De horizontale afstand varieert tussen bijna 14 cm tot meer dan 32 cm. Door deze verdeling ontstaat een conisch gevormd, laag resolutie, beeldscherm waarmee afbeeldingen, videoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s en animaties van grote afstand te zien zijn.

Tijdens GLOW worden diverse bewegende beelden getoond die wetenschappelijke en technische processen verbeelden. Deze beelden zijn door diverse faculteiten van de universiteit aangedragen en zijn exemplarisch voor de fascinerende onderzoeken die op de campus plaatsvinden. Na GLOW blijft dit kunstwerk zichtbaar op het TU/e terrein. Het idee en ontwerp is van de lichtarchitect Har Hollands. De programmering is gemaakt in samenwerking met Rombout Frieling en mede gerealiseerd door studenten: Monique Huveneers, Diane Schoenmaker, JĂŠrome Simons en Fenna Wit.

GLOW PROJECT

Light installation AnTUenna consists of ample 10,000 LED lights attached to the chimney at the ‘groene loper’ of the University of Technology campus. These LED lights generate red, green and blue light and are individually controlled in colour and intensity by a central controlling system. These light points are grouped around the chimney in rings of 60 LEDs each. It starts with a 15 centimetres’ distance between the upper two rings to be increased up to a distance of several metres between the two lowest rings. Horizontally, the distance varies between 14 and 32 centimetres. And owing to this specific division, a conic, low resolution screen appears which depicts images, videos and animations to be seen at great distance.

During GLOW, several moving image projects are shown representing scientific and technical processes. These images are supplied by several faculties of the University of Technology, exemplary for the many fascinating studies that take place on campus. After GLOW, AnTuenna will remain on site permanently Idea and design originate from light architect Har Hollands. Programming is made in collaboration with Rombout Frieling and students Monique Huveneers, Diane Schoenmaker, Jérome Simons and Fenna Wit.

Exploding Wire TU/e

GLOW NEXT PROJECT

21 De bliksem is een ontzagwekkend natuurverschijnsel. Fabelachtig hoge stromen in de lucht veroorzaken een explosieachtig gedonder en een lichtflits van vele kilometers lang. Lichtkunstenaar Ivo Schoofs was de initiator van dit indrukwekkende project en is bij het project betrokken. In een samenwerking tussen de groep EES van de faculteit Electrical Engineering, de groep EPG (Elementary Processes Gas-discharges) van de faculteit Technische Natuurkunde en het EPC van de TU/e wordt er boven de rivier de Dommel een bliksemstraal van honderd meter lang gerealiseerd. Bij het opwekken van die bliksemstraal komen elektrische spanningen van vele honderden kilovolt te pas en lopen er forse stromen door een heel dun koperdraadje. Wanneer de bliksem knalt, is die koperdraad niet zichtbaar of hoorbaar, maar het opgewekte plasma des te meer! Door middel van drones wordt, na elke explosie, de koperdraad vervangen voor een nieuwe koperdraad. Het publiek kan de bliksems vanaf veilige afstand zien, vanaf de overkant van de Dommel. Elke tien minuten wordt er geknald.

Lightning is an awe-inspiring phenomenon. Fabulously high electrical currents in the air trigger an explosive thunder and a lightning bolt of many kilometres. Light artists Ivo Schoofs was the initiator of this impressive project and has been involved ever since. In co-operation with the EES group of the Electrical Engineering faculty, the EPG group (Elementary Processes Gas-discharges) of the Technical faculty and the EPC of the University of Technology, a 100 metresâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; high lightning bolt will be created above the river Dommel. While generating this lightning bolt, the electrical voltage of many hundreds of kilovolts is needed and extremely high electric currents run through a very thin copper wire. When the lightning explodes, this copper wire can neither be seen nor heard, but the plasma induced, all the more! After every explosion, drones will replace the old copper for a new one. The audience will be able to see the lightning from a safe distance across the riverside. Every ten minutes there will be another explosion.

De GLOW Run Eindhoven is een fun run van 5,5 km die dit jaar voor de tweede keer plaatsvindt, tijdens het lichtkunstfestival GLOW in Eindhoven.

The GLOW Run is a 5.5 kilometres’ fun run, which takes place for the second time during the Light Art Festival GLOW.

Het parcours van GLOW wordt speciaal (en alleen) voor de GLOW Run Eindhoven beschikbaar gesteld voor duizenden hardlopers. Hardlopend passeer je de mooiste en indrukwekkendste lichtkunstwerken. Maar je gaat er zelf ook één creëren. Alle deelnemers creëren één grote lichtslang. De GLOW Rungadgets die je ontvangt bij de aankoop van je ticket zorgen voor een unieke lichtervaring, maar wees ook zelf creatief. Haal alles uit de kast om volledig te ‘glowen’, dan we gaan shinend de stad door en sluiten we de 11e editie van GLOW spetterend af op het TU/e terrein.

GLOW HORECAPLEIN

TU/e - plein De Zaale LumenUs

Het LumenUs GLOW Horecaplein wordt gerund door twee studieverenigingen van de Technische Universiteit van Eindhoven (TU/e). De studieverenigingen van Bouwkunde en Industrial Design willen met dit horecaplein, en een kunstwerk gemaakt door studenten, de verbinding leggen tussen de studenten, de betrokken bedrijven en de bezoekers van GLOW. Dit zal zich uitten in een Café in de stijl van studenten, met studentenprijzen. Een plek waar de mensen gerelateerd aan de TU/e zich mengen met de bezoekers van GLOW.

The LumenUs GLOW Food Court is run by two study associations of the University of Technology (TU/e). The study associations of the faculties Engineering and Industrial Design wish to make a connection between this food court & the LumenUs artwork and the students, the companies involved and the GLOW-visitors. This will be realized by a student-style café with student rates. A place where people related to the University of Technology can mingle with the GLOW visitors.

De Zaale TU/e Terrein

TEAM: LumenUs is an initiative of two study associations from the Eindhoven University of Technology: CHEOPS and Lucid.

LumenUs is een door TU/e studenten ontwikkelde constructie die volledig is gebaseerd op een trek- en drukverhouding. De ingewikkelde constructie bestaat uit staven en staalkabels die elkaar in balans houden. In het kunstwerk worden de staven van binnenuit verlicht. Deze verlichting reageert op de impulsen van het GLOW publiek. Door deze interactie met het publiek nemen verschillende kleuren, door middel van sensoren, het object langzaam over.

Dit effect staat voor het proces hoe, tijdens een brainstorm, verschillende kleine ideeĂŤn en impulsen samen een compleet plan kunnen vormen; een regelmatig gebruikt hulpmiddel door zowel studenten als professionals. Zo vormen de ideeĂŤn van het publiek tezamen het beeld en ontstaat er een interactief, dynamisch en levendig kunstwerk, luchtig en krachtig voor het oog.

GLOW NEXT PROJECT

The construction LumenUs has been developed by students of the University of Technology and is fully based on a pull-and-pressure ratio. The complicated construction consists of bars and steel wires that keep each other in balance. In this work of art, the bars are highlighted from within and this illumination responds to the impulses of the GLOW public. Because of this interaction, colours gradually take over the object, by means of sensors.

This effect represents the process of how, while brainstorming, several small ideas and impulses can together form a complete plan: itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a regularly used tool by students as well as professionals. This way, the ideas coming from the public can together create an image and thus an interactive, dynamic and lively work of art appears. Airy and powerful to the eye. www.lumenus.nl

23 De Zaale A.R.T. TU/e Intelligence Lighting Institute/Philip Ross In ons dagelijks leven worden we geconfronteerd met een toenemende stroom aan impulsen die strijden om onze aandacht. Onze hersenen krijgen slechts weinig rust en we raken het vermogen kwijt om ons te focussen en ons te binden aan een ervaring. Zelfs tijdens GLOW loert het gevaar van over-stimulatie. Gelukkig kan de wetenschap ons helpen! Attention Restoration Theory (A.R.T.) staat voor de theorie van het ‘herstellen van onze aandacht’ en is bedacht door Stephen en Rachel Kaplan. A.R.T. gaat er vanuit dat specifieke natuurlijke patronen ons kunnen helpen te ontspannen en opladen voor nieuwe, veeleisende activiteiten. We raakten geïnspireerd door A.R.T. om een ruimte te creëren waarin we weer tot rust kunnen komen in plaats van nog meer stimuli toe te voegen. Patronen die voortkomen uit de natuurlijke bewegingen van bomen zijn opgenomen en worden ter plekke live vertaald in licht en geluid modulaties.

In our daily lives, we are confronted with an ever growing stream of stimuli that fight for our attention. Our brains get little rest and we lose the ability to focus our attention and deeply engage in an experience. Even at Glow the danger of over-stimulation lurks. But science can help! Attention Restoration Theory (A.R.T), proposed by Stephen and Rachel Kaplan, suggests that specific patterns from nature allow us to relax, escape and recharge for new demanding activities. We took inspiration from A.R.T. to create a space for calm restoration, rather than additional stimulation. Patterns that emerge from the natural movements of the trees are recorded and translated live into modulations of light and sound. Lose yourself in an unfocused, time-stretched atmosphere and find yourself recovered, recharged and refreshed at the end of the walk.

24 De Zaale In een ander Licht Studenten SintLucas Licht maakt tegenstellingen en contrasten zichtbaar. Toch zie je niet altijd alles op het eerste gezicht en is je eerste indruk niet altijd juist. Het project ‘In een ander licht’, gemaakt door studenten SintLucas, verrast je en zorgt voor nieuwe inzichten. 5 foto’s worden afwisselend met rood en groen beschenen en leveren daardoor een steeds ander beeld op. Dit project laat je anders naar mensen kijken. GLOW biedt de SintLucas studenten een podium voor hun projecten. Ze krijgen de kans om hun ideeën uit te voeren en te presenteren aan een groot publiek. Dat is een unieke kans. Dit jaar kun je drie door SintLucas studenten ontwikkelde GLOW projecten vinden op het 18 Septemberplein, De Wal en aan De Zaale op het TU/e-terrein.

Light unravels contradictions and contrasts. Yet, you can’t always spot everything at first sight and your first impression may not always be correct. The project ‘In another light’, created by SintLucas students, will surprise you in providing new insights. Five photographs are alternatively shone upon by red and green lights, each time producing different images. This project will make you look at people in a different way. GLOW offers SintLucas students a platform for their projects. They are given the unique opportunity to implement their ideas and present them to a large audience. This year, you can enjoy three artworks, created by SintLucas students, on 18 Septemberplein, De Wal and at De Zaale on the University of Technology site.

Dutmalapad Lithografic World Afterlight i.s.m. ASML

De indrukwekkende installatie van Afterlight, tijdens GLOW 2015 gepresenteerd in samenwerking met ASML, maakt dit jaar zijn terugkeer. ‘Werken met licht’ staat wederom centraal in deze grootse installatie die ook dit jaar weer zorgt voor de nodige spanning en verwondering. De installatie heeft speciaal voor GLOW 2016 een metamorfose ondergaan en is voorzien van een geheel nieuwe show. Reflecties, projecties en een lijnen spel van LED strips

laten het object tot leven komen en creëren een verhaal waarin de ruimtelijke constructies van het object de taal vormen. Vanuit verhitte atomen wordt het licht gecreëerd om de complexe productie processen binnen de machines van ASML aan te sturen. Deze processen worden door de lichtkunstenaars van Afterlight geïnterpreteerd en vertaald naar een abstracte licht show.

The impressive Afterlight installation, presented during GLOW 2015 in collaboration with ASML, will return this year. Again, ‘Working with light’ is the most important feature of this installation and again this project will guarantee suspense and awe. The installation has undergone drastic changes and has been uploaded with a whole new show, especially for the GLOW 2016 edition. Reflections, projections and an interplay of LED strip lines, turn this object to life and

create a story in which the language is formed by the spatial constructions of the object.. The light is created by heated atoms in order to control the complex production processes within the ASML machines. These processes are interpreted by the light artists of Afterlight and translated into an abstract light show.

26 Dutmalapad Intermedia TU/e Intelligent Lighting Institute Elke dag gebruiken mensen technologie om contact met elkaar te leggen. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan een telefoongesprek, een tekstberichtje of Skype. Sociale media hebben recentelijk weer hele nieuwe manieren van communicatie mogelijk gemaakt. De technologische schakels die we gebruiken om contact te leggen, hebben invloed op onze manier van communiceren en daarmee op ons sociale gedrag. Maar, wat is dat voor invloed? En, hoe zien we dat terug in ons eigen gedrag? De interactieve installatie ‘Intermedia’ onderzoekt de invloed van technologie als schakel in de interactie tussen personen. Communiceer via de beelden die Intermedia van jou en van anderen maakt en ervaar zelf de invloed van technologie op je sociale gedrag!

Every day, people use technology to get in contact with each other. For instance through a phone call, a text message or via Skype. Recently, social media unleashed a whole new way of communication. The technological links that we use to make contact, influence the way we communicate and therefore our social behaviour. But, what kind of influence? And, how does that reflect in our own behaviour? The interactive installation ‘Intermedia’ researches the influence of technology as a link in the interaction between people. Communicate via the images that are taken of you and the other GLOW visitors by Intermedia and experience how your social behaviour is influenced by technology! Lumière Tango Wouter Brave

Het GLOW project Lumière Tango van kunstenaar Wouter Brave kan het beste worden omschreven als een lichtchoreografie. Een choreografie die niet wordt uitgevoerd door dansers van vlees en bloed, maar door 48 lichtbundels die een gevoelige voorstelling geven op een tangocompositie van Astor Piazzolla, getiteld ‘NoviTango’. De choreografie wordt echter even nauwgezet uitgevoerd als ware het professionele dansers; een wonderbaarlijk schouwspel. De intensiteit van de lichtbundels draagt bij aan

het bijzondere lijnenspel van lichtbanen die opgaan in de koude avondlucht. Als toeschouwer kun je er voor kiezen om van een afstand van het lichtspel te genieten, toch is de beleving intenser wanneer je er doorheen loopt. Begeef je tussen de ‘dansers’ en er vindt een wisselwerking plaats tussen jou en het kunstwerk. De lichtbundels lijken te transformeren in materie, wat een haast fysieke ervaring teweeg brengt.

GLOW PROJECT

GLOW project ‘Lumière Tango’ by the Dutch artist Wouter Brave can best be described as a light choreography. A choreography not executed by real dancers of flesh and blood but by 48 light beams that delicately perform on the tango composition ‘NoviTango’ by Astor Piazolla. The choreography, however, is carried out equally accurate as were the beams professional dancers; an amazing spectacle. The intensity of the light beams contributes to the extraordinary interplay of these light

lines that dissolve into the cold night air. As a spectator, you may choose to enjoy the light show from a distance. Yet, the experience is a lot more intense walking right through it. Once among the ‘dancers’, an interaction takes place between you and this work of art. The light beams seem to transform into substance, thus causing nearphysical experience. www.xbrightfx.nl

Kennispoort Parallax Paradoxon A light intervention in time and space Starsky

Langs de welving van de ruimte experimenteert ‘Parallax Paradoxon’ met de buiging van tijd en ruimte. Parallax Paradoxon slaagt erin het gebouw te laten schommelen; trillend in de ruimte en slingerend tussen architectuur en licht. Met betrekking tot vertekening en vervorming staat het dan ook lijnrecht tegenover 3D projectie, als de antithese tot projectie arrangementen. Er worden geen afbeeldingen op het gebouw geprojecteerd, als decoratie.

In plaats daarvan wordt de gehele lichtruimte gebruikt, samensmeltend met de bestaande structuur, accentuerend en vervormend. Verborgen perspectieven worden onthult en het object wordt uitgedaagd in plaats van gedecoreerd. Zo ontstaat er een dialoog tussen licht en architectuur, tussen beeld en structuur: ze beïnvloeden elkaar terwijl het licht en de materie met elkaar botsen.

GLOW PROJECT

Along the curvature of space, parallax paradoxon experiments with the flexion of time and space. Parallax Paradoxon succeeds in making the building swing; vibrating in space and oscillating between architecture and light. With regard to distortion and deformation it is contrary to 3D mapping projection , in fact, it is the antithesis to the common projection mapping. It does not project illustrations on the architecture thus making it an ornament. Instead, it uses the whole light space; merging

with the given structure, accentuating, dissolving, distorting and revealing unseen perspectives, challenging the object instead of decorating it. A dialogue between light and architecture emerges, communication between image and structure, changing, distorting and influencing each other. They have impact on each other and affect each other as light and matter collide. www.starsky.at

Kennedyplein Nozzles The Feetgroup Philips heeft The Feetgroup de opdracht gegeven om op creatieve wijze een lichtinstallatie te ontwikkelen die de nieuwste innovatie binnen stofzuigers toont. De Philips stofzuiger ‘Performer Ultimate’ maakt namelijk gebruik van licht om de kleinste stofdeeltjes zichtbaar te maken. The Feetgroup is de uitdaging aangegaan en slaat met dit project een brug tussen lichtkunst en een consumentenproduct dat, door innovatief gebruik van licht, tot verbeterde prestaties komt. In de installatie NOZZLES zijn 650 mondstukken van deze stofzuiger verwerkt, die elk over 4 LED lampjes beschikken. Op de schuine wand aan het Kennedyplein vormen zij tezamen een lichtspel met behulp van de in totaal 2.600 LED lampjes. Deze samenwerking tussen The Feetgroup en Philips laat zien hoe innovatie, design en kunst op een verrassende manier samenkomen.

Licht maakt de architectuur en de ruimte in het station. De gemeente Eindhoven, NS en ProRail hebben de afgelopen 4 jaar gebouwd aan een station wat aan de behoeften van de reiziger en de stad voldoet. Niet alleen de cultuur en de historie van Eindhoven vragen om een station van licht. Licht is essentieel voor een aantrekkelijke reis- en verblijfsruimte, die tegelijkertijd een van de slagaders tussen de Noord- en Zuidzijde van de stad is. Onder de gloed van een geheel oplichtend plafond snellen de reizigers door het nieuwe station richting hun treinen en van Noord naar Zuid. Architect Luc Veeger heeft voor deze nieuwe passage een plafond van licht ontworpen dat in de hectische drukte van een station een serene rust toevoegt. Het lichtplafond bestaat uit een 100% recyclebare folie waarboven de allernieuwste LEDverlichting is gemonteerd. In de constructieve glazen dakliggers zijn led-lijnen opgenomen. Alle verlichting is energieneutraal door de geïntegreerde zonnepanelen in de glasdaken en op de perronkap. Deze architectonische integratie van duurzame materialen, lichttechnieken en energievoorziening maakt het NEW LIGHT in het station compleet. Licht blijft de essentie in de architectuur.

The Feetgroup was assigned by Philips to creatively design a light installation which displays the latest innovation in the field of vacuum cleaners. In fact, the Philips vacuum cleaner ‘Performer Ultimate’ uses light to make even the smallest dust particles visible. The Feetgroup accepted this challenge and by doing so they built a bridge between light art and a consumer product which has reached improved performance, thanks to the use of light innovation techniques. In the installation NOZZLES 650 nozzles of the new vacuum cleaner have been processed, each with four LED lights. Together, the 2,600 LED lights create a light show on the sloping wall at Kennedyplein. The collaboration between The Feetgroup and Philips shows how innovation design and art can join in a very surprising manner. www.philips.nl

Light defines the architecture and space of the Eindhoven train station. For the last four years, the municipality of Eindhoven, Dutch Railways and ProRail together built a train station which meets all requirements of the traveller as well as those of the city. It is not only the culture and history of Eindhoven that demand such a station of light; light is just as essential to an attractive travel- and public area. Meanwhile, it also functions as one of the main traffic arteries between the north and south of Eindhoven. Under the ‘glow’ of an illuminating ceiling, travellers rush towards their trains through the new train station. For this new passageway, architect Luc Veeger designed a ceiling of light which brings serenity and peace in the hectic bustle of a train station. The light-ceiling consists of 100% recyclable foil above which the latest LED lighting has been installed. LED lines are also incorporated in the constructive, glass roof beams. Because of the integrated sun panels in the glass rooftops and on the platform roof, all lighting is energy neutral. This architectonic integration of sustainable materials, lighting techniques and energy supply, completes the station’s NEW LIGHT. And light remains the essence of this architecture.

Stap maar in! In deze interactieve lichtinstallatie maak je als ‘passagier’ onderdeel uit van dit kleurrijke kunstwerk. Het Eindhovense ontwerpteam Enversed nodigt je uit om je eigen ‘licht trein’ te tekenen. Door het artistieke talent van de GLOW bezoeker ontstaat er als het ware een landschap van lichttreinen in de nieuwe Centrumhal van Station Eindhoven. Lichtinstallatie ‘TraiNSketch’ maakt je onderdeel van een dynamisch schilderij

waarin de wereld van de Nederlandse Spoorwegen in een sneltreinvaart voorbij schiet. Het ontwerpteam van Enversed, gevestigd op Strijp-S, specialiseert zich in het maken van virtual reality ervaringen voor trainingen, presentaties, architectuur en entertainment. Speciaal voor GLOW maken ze een uitstap naar interactieve tekeningen en verkennen zij een ander landschap van interactieve ervaringen.

All aboard! As a ‘passenger’ you are part of the colourful artwork in this interactive light installation, The Eindhoven design team Enversed invites you to draw your own ‘light train’. The artistic talents of the GLOW visitors will create a so-called landscape of light trains at the Centre Hall of Eindhoven Train Station. Light installation ‘TraiNSketch’ makes you part of a dynamic painting in which the world of Dutch Railways will pass by at full speed.

The design team Enversed, situated at Strijp-S, specializes in creating virtual reality experiences for trainings, presentations, architecture and entertainment. Especially for GLOW, they will make a trip to interactive drawings thus exploring a different landscape of interactive experiences.
