O

in Christ,

ur mission as a community of faith is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

We strive to make disciples by connecting people to Jesus Christ and Christian fellowship, preparing people for a life of discipleship, helping them to grow in their walk with God in their daily lives, and sending people into the world to share the love of Christ in word and in deed. Please take the time to browse through these pages and discover the many ways that God is working in and through the people and ministries of BUMC, and using our gifts, both individually and corporately, in our common ministry. God is moving among us in unique ways. What a privilege it is to be in partnership in the work of God’s kingdom! Yours in Christ, Davis

Micah 6:8 "'With what should I come before the Lord, and bow down before God on high? Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?' He has told you, O man, what is good — and what does the Lord require of you, but to do justice and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?"

“AS WE PASS THE PEACE OF CHRIST AROUND THE SANCTUARY, I AM MINDFUL THAT NONE OF US PROBABLY IS EXPERIENCING THE PEACE OF CHRIST IN ALL ITS BEAUTY AND FULLNESS. MY HEART SWELLS WITH THE DESIRE FOR US ALL TO DO SO. MY PRAYERS BEGIN FOR THAT TO BE SO, AND CONTINUE THROUGHOUT THE WEEK.” - PAT RALLS

CHALLENGE: HOW DO I KNOW WHERE GOD IS LEADING ME TO SERVE?

»» Julie's

Story

I was at a loss as to how to fill that void, and I turned to God. He reminded me that as a Christian, a nurse, a mother, I have always been happiest when serving others. God presented me the opportunity to serve in two ministries, The Sunny Day Club (serving those with dementia) and Community Care Fellowship (serving the homeless). I knew these ministries would be challenging for me and I felt ill-equipped. When I doubted myself, Philippians 4:13 (I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me) came to mind.

Several years ago, I found myself with a void in my life. I was a stay-at-home mom who was now an empty nester. My husband and I were searching for a new church home.

By allowing God to lead me to volunteer with these dear folks, I realized that God was preparing me through my life experiences to serve in these ministries and all that would be required of me is to trust God and extend His love to others. Often, dementia victims and the homeless are lonely because people such as myself find it uncomfortable to interact with them. However, when we serve God and his precious children, we are the ones who feel blessed. I now find myself to be part of two loving and caring communities. Every week that I am blessed to go to Sunny Day or to Community Care

Fellowship, I witness Matthew 18:20 (“For where two or three gather in my name, there I am with them”). It is a great joy to know all who I have met through serving and I have grown so much as a Christian with their help.

Thank you, God, for the treasured relationships that have come my way through serving in these two special ministries. I lift up all those who feel invisible and lonely. Help me never to be complacent and to always be praying for your guidance. - Julie Thomas, Sunny Day Coordinator

»» Calvin's When I was at the Sonshine Choir Home Concert, I heard the students speak about the effect their trip had on them, and I remembered how much my youth group impacted my life. I first heard about medical missions at youth camp. We heard a missionary speak about the significant medical needs of the African people and the part medicine, given in God’s name, can play in introducing them to Christ. The Gospel of Luke recounts Jesus sending his disciples, first the 12 and then the 72, to heal

GO THEREFORE AND MAKE DISCIPLES OF ALL NATIONS, BAPTIZING THEM IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER AND OF THE SON AND OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, AND TEACHING THEM TO OBEY EVERYTHING THAT I HAVE COMMANDED YOU. AND REMEMBER, I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS, TO THE END OF THE AGE.

Story

the sick, present the kingdom and cast out demons. The Holy Spirit spoke to me through that, and I committed my life to medical missions. In the following years the Lord prepared me for that work in many ways. I continued to grow closer to the Lord through my youth group, and found similar encouragement and fellowship in medical school through the Christian Medical Society. Between working medical clinics and attending student missions conferences, God was solidifying my call to medical missions. Once I completed my residency, I was commissioned to a

large hospital in in Democratic Republic of Congo to treat children with polio, musculoskeletal infections and injuries. Since returning to the States, I have continued to do short-term medical trips and volunteer at Christian clinics that meet the physical and spiritual needs of the under-insured and refugee populations. Throughout all of these experiences, I have the joy of seeing the Lord answer many prayers and witnessing the Body of Christ working to bring the gospel to the world. - Calvin Johnson

"MY SMALL GROUP LEADERS ARE THE ABSOLUTE BEST. THEY HELP ME WITH MY FAITH JOURNEY JUST BY BEING THEMSELVES - LOVING, GOD-FEARING LEADERS WHO AREN'T AFRAID TO TALK AND SHARE ABOUT THEIR FAITH! I KNOW I CAN ALWAYS GO TO THEM WITH QUESTIONS, AND EVEN THOUGH THEY MIGHT NOT ALWAYS HAVE THE PERFECT ANSWER, THEY STILL DO THEIR BEST TO HELP ME AND MENTOR ME. " - EMMA GRACE SCHENK, 10TH GRADE

Now I have a new understanding of what it means to be a Christian. My purpose in life is to serve God, serve His children, and live as a child of God, honoring Him in all I do. Challenge: What are you holding on to that is preventing you from being radically available for God?

- Karen Bruton

It was at that point that I started getting nudges from God which turned into a full calling from the Lord. I was scared to death because I did not really know what I was doing and I had no idea how I would support myself. But I knew God was calling me to take the “road less traveled” and to serve Him. I quit my job and started Just Hope International,

where I used my business skills to give a hand up – not a hand out – to people living in impoverished areas around the world, helping them become selfsustaining. A lot of my work has been in Africa, and to my surprise, Africa is now like a second home to me. I miss it when I’m not there.

In 2006, I began a Bible study at BUMC called Companions in Christ. In early 2007, the 12 people in that class began discussing what it meant to be “radically available for God.” A quote from the material stated, “Persons are called to abandon their lives completely into God’s

hands. Have you let go of everything to give yourself to God? God shakes people free of every other constraint so that they trust only in their Lord. Then the vision of a particular service and the power to do it can be given.” I said that night to my Bible study group that I could not do that. “What if God sent me somewhere like Africa? I could not go to Africa!”

40 SMALL GROUPS WITH 460 PEOPLE PARTICIPATING

I had lived my life striving to be a good person. Looking back, I thought that was what it meant to be a Christian…to be kind, giving, sharing, thoughtful. All of that is important, but I came to realize that to build a true relationship with Jesus Christ meant to completely give your life away and see yourself in a new light, a light that only a life dedicated to God can produce.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT MISSION / IDENTIFY, PREPARE AND EMPOWER PERSONS CALLED TO LEADERSHIP TO BE USED MOST EFFECTIVELY FOR GOD'S WORK Healthy leadership is critical to the effectiveness of an organization, and we place a priority on developing and equipping people for ministry. Annual events are some of the ways we do this:

»» Leadership BUMC Event FOR EMERGING LEADERS

»» Fall Leadership Retreat FOR ACTIVE LEADERS

»» Empower Leader Training FOR AGE-LEVEL TEACHERS, SMALL GROUP LEADERS, AND VOLUNTEERS

A team approach to leadership is most effective for productive ministry, and we utilize 3 types of teams at BUMC: Operational/Ministry (best for adaptive/strategic work), Directional/Administrative (best for legislative/ governance work), and Task (best for technical, specific tasks).

MINISTRY LEAD TEAMS 10 operational teams, with both staff and lay members, who provide leadership for all ministry areas of the church and campuses, including BUMC Lead Team, Worship & Arts, Connect Ministry, Discipleship Ministry, Children’s Ministry, Student Ministry, Adult Ministry, Missions & Outreach, Administration & Operations, Trinity Lead Team and The Village Lead Team.

ADMINISTRATIVE COMMITTEES & COUNCILS Church Council and 5 directional teams (Finance, Foundation, Lay Leadership & Development, Staff Parish Relations & Trustees) serve in an advisory capacity for church-wide initiatives.

NUMEROUS TASK TEAMS Valuable groups who implement the ministries of BUMC.

Romans 12:4-6a "JUST AS EACH OF US HAS ONE BODY WITH MANY MEMBERS, AND THESE MEMBERS DO NOT ALL HAVE THE SAME FUNCTION, SO IN CHRIST WE WHO ARE MANY FORM ONE BODY, AND EACH MEMBER BELONGS TO ALL THE OTHERS. WE HAVE DIFFERENT GIFTS, ACCORDING TO THE GRACE GIVEN US."

SCOTT'S STORY What do you do? Where do you go to church? Many times, these are the first couple of questions people may ask when getting to know each other.

SOCIETY OF ST ANDREW FOOD PACKING " POTATO DROP"

Sometimes my response is that I work at a major corporation during the day, but I run a bed and breakfast for homeless people at night. The bed and breakfast just happens to be located in the gym at Brentwood United Methodist Church and is a part of Room in the Inn. This experience has drawn me closer to God than just about anything else. I get to witness true connections being made between BUMC members and our guests. I encourage our volunteers to think of what we do when we have guests at home – put out clean sheets and towels, make a favorite dinner – and emulate that for our guests at Room in the Inn. Our guests have varying backgrounds and stories. I do not know what happens to most after they leave us. One thing I am sure of, though, is that for the time they spend with us, they feel safe, respected, and loved.

Challenge: The next time you see someone with very little, take the time to acknowledge them by looking them in the eye and saying hello. Everyone, no matter their circumstance, deserves respect and dignity.
