Úvodní slovo V srpnu 2010 začalo pět škol z pěti zemí (České republiky, Maďarska, Polska, Turecka a Velké Británie) pracovat na projektu s cílem prozkoumat a zmapovat partnerské země a vytvořit „průvodce“ Ad fontes rerum Europae očima žáků obsahující informace o navštívených zemích partnerských škol. Jak napovídá název, zaměřili jsme se především na pohled a vnímání žáků.

Projekt jsme zahájili v říjnu 2010 v České republice, v dubnu 2011 jsme se vydali do Maďarska, v červnu 2011 jsme odlétli do Turecka, Velkou Británii jsme navštívili v říjnu 2011 a nakonec jsme v březnu 2012 zamířili do Polska. Během zahraničních výjezdů a v hodinách dějepisu byli žáci seznamováni s důležitými kulturními úspěchy partnerských zemí. Mezinárodního projektu se účastnilo 50 učitelů a 300 žáků.

Ne všichni měli samozřejmě možnost zkoumat ostatní země osobně – a proto ti šťastnější (od 15 do 18 let) spolu se svými učiteli sepsali své postřehy do této drobné publikace. Za použití angličtiny coby jazyka projektu sdíleli žáci své dojmy v sekci Průvodce na webových stránkách AFRE (http://afremeetings.shutterfly.com a http://afre.shutterfly.com).

Cílem této brožurky je vystihnout odlišnosti; pojmenovat, co je u nás běžné, leč v zahraničí na nás působí podivně, zvláštně či prostě pozoruhodně. Toto zkoumání rozvinulo vědomí naší evropskosti po stránce kulturní, společenskovědní, dějepisné i biologicko zeměpisné.

Foreword In August 2010, five schools from five countries (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Turkey and the UK) unified around a project idea of exploring and mapping partner countries to create a ”tour guide” brochure Ad fontes rerum Europae from the Pupils´ Point of View with information on the visited countries of all the host schools. As the title announces, we focused mainly on the sharp sight of the pupils´ perspective.

We started in the Czech Republic in October 2010, further went to see Hungary in April 2011, flew to Turkey in June 2011, visited the United Kingdom in October 2011 and finally met in Poland in March 2012. During the meetings as well as in history classes, pupils were acquainted with important cultural achievements of each country. There were 50 teachers and 300 pupils involved in the international project.

Of course, not all of us had the opportunity to explore the partner countries – and this is why those lucky ones (aged 15-18) and their teachers worked together and gathered their experiences into this brochure. The aim of this work is to point out differences; things which are common for us but give foreigners the impression of peculiarity or simply an interesting distinction. The investigated aspects supported our cultural, social scientific, historical as well as biological/geographical European awareness.

MAĎARSKO Příležitost vyjet na mezinárodní setkání do Maďarska dostalo pět žáků naší školy. Nevěděli přesně, co mohou očekávat, ale ukázalo se, že týden to byl vynikající. Maďarsko sice neleží od České republiky daleko, ale je to úplně jiná země: barevná a zajímavá. Ten týden byl úžasný.

Obyvatelé První dva dny jsme strávili v centru Budapešti a hlavní město Maďarska na nás velmi zapůsobilo: nádherné město na březích velké řeky, široké ulice a budovy, z nichž navíc – jakkoli je to obtížně poznatelné – byla většina postavena v krátkém období mezi lety 1867 a 1914. Historické styly (gotika, renesance a baroko) sloužily pouze jako volně použitelný vzor při tvorbě fasád. Jeli jsme nejstarším metrem v Evropě, viděli halu západního nádraží navrženou Alexandrem Gustavem Eiffelem – Maďarsko se tehdy snažilo ohromit cizince alespoň v hlavním městě. Současná Budapešť také žije jinak než ostatní části země – okamžitě jsme si všimli, že jsou zde velké rozdíly: zatímco v hlavním městě žijí dva miliony obyvatel a další milion dojíždí, zbytek desetimilionové země (kromě západní části země hraničící s Rakouskem) je vyvinutý poměrně málo.

V Budapešti je také nepřekonatelná nabídka práce i nákupních možností: v obřím nákupním středisku West End City Center poblíž západní stanice nádraží jsme se ztratili a porovnávali ceny.

Zatímco doma Češi zaplatí méně za jídlo, nákup značkového oblečení se v Maďarsku určitě vyplatí (obzvláště kvalitní boty, které jsou zde až čtyřikrát levnější: 5 000 versus 20 000 HUF). To by mohlo vysvětlit, proč mají Maďaři oproti ostatním národům – vzhledem k cenám – tendenci nakupovat méně jídla před odjezdem na dlouhou dobu do zahraničí. Tím překvapivější pro nás bylo, když jsme zjistili, že tamější ceny v restauracích se od našich příliš neliší – a porce byly všude velké a chutné. Místy nás lehce zarazily některé kombinace příloh (rýže a řízek, více příloh u jednoho jídla, relativně malý výběr jídel pro vegetariány). V České republice máme buď rýži, nebo hranolky, ale nikdy obojí. Čím východněji, tím je zřetelnější, že bohatá Budapešť je daleko – Sárospatak leží 12 km od hranice s východním Slovenskem (a nejbližším kulturním centrem Košicemi) a 70 km od Ukrajiny, zatímco do hlavního města Maďarska to trvá čtyři hodiny.

Obyvateli Maďarska jsou většinou Maďaři, menšiny jsou prakticky zanedbatelné. Od Trianonské smlouvy nicméně zůstala řada maďarských 5

GUIDE AD FONTES RERUM EUROPAE from the Pupils´Point of View or Following the Cultural Footsteps of Middle Eastern Europe and the Cradle of Parliamentary Democracy menšin v sousedních státech. Ačkoli jsme to nemohli pozorovat a posoudit, statistiky pravidelně hlásí úbytek maďarské populace.

Stran vztahů mezi velkými městy a venkovem jsme se dozvěděli, že během dlouhé turecké okupace se lidé často stěhovali do měst venkovského typu, která byla pod přímou ochranou sultána. Maďarsko se tak vylidňovalo (opuštěná oblast = „puszta”) a právě na tato místa se po skončení turecké nadvlády stěhovali lidé odjinud (například z Moravy).

A když už je řeč o vesnicích, byli jsme ohromeni, když jsme v polích uviděli velké požáry. Mysleli jsme, že tím země trpí, ale bylo nám řečeno, že takto tradičně líní lidé vypalují pole, aby se vyhnuli orání.

středoevropských zemí: starší generace hovoří německy, střední zapomíná ruštinu, kterou se musela učit, a nejmladší mluví anglicky. Ačkoli Slovensko je blízko Sárospatáku, kde jsme bydleli, slovensky tamější obyvatelé neumějí.

Gymnázium v Sárospataku svým studentům nabízí kvalitní jazykové vzdělání: vyučují angličtinu, němčinu, ruštinu a italštinu. Pro nás bylo jazykově vzato velmi užitečné naučit se několik maďarských slov a frází – doporučujeme všem návštěvníkům této země.

Navzdory všem tradovaným klišé o „vznětlivé povaze“ se Maďarská populace chová klidně a zdvořile; neporušují přednost pro chodce atd. Velmi nás pobavila skutečnost, že náš běžný pozdrav, kdy se dívky při setkání políbí na tvář, pokládali Maďaři za jasnou známku homosexuální orientace. A někteří se nás otevřeně ptali, zda jsou ty dívky lesby. A přitom to byl jen znak kamarádství! Jak jim pak také řekly ostatní skupiny, tento zvyk se rozšířil již prakticky po celé Evropě.

Rovněž jsme si všimli, že – navzdory očividně zanedbávané infrastruktuře (autobusy, vlaky, neupravené fasády, na nichž se začalo s opravami teprve nedávno) – Maďaři se snaží mít vše čisté. To uvidíte například v Budapešti: žádné povalující se nedopalky či plivance. Kdo ví, proč to je u nás jiné a lidé neváhají veřejně na ulicích plivat a dělat nepořádek. Také řidiči se zdáli být mnohem opatrnější a nechali nás vždy přejít. I proto na nás Budapešť působí jako velmi klidné a bezpečné město.

Vizuální styl Vztah k lidovému umění je v Maďarsku velmi silný již od konce 19. století. Umělci se zde, stejně jako v zahraničí, snažili spojit moderní styly s lidovými prvky. My jsme se seznámili s národním romantismem konce devatenáctého století. Ten byl ovlivněn uvedeným zájmem Maďarů o lidové umění a rovněž secese: jeden z nejznámějších

Nám nicméně připadaly některé současné umělecké objekty docela podivné, například obtisky na keramice v Holloházu (jakkoli jsme rádi, že jsme si mohli sami vyzkoušet keramiku pomalovat vlastními nápady): funkcionalistické tradice jsou v Brně očividně silnější než v Maďarsku… Poslední práce Imre Makovce (v Sárospataku) vypadají opravdu ohromně, ale nám připomněly spíše jevištní scénu: ve srovnání s impozantním foyer byly gymnazijní chodby veskrze skromně, vysoké místnosti neprakticky a v zimě jistě špatně použitelně, neb nám bylo řečeno, že vnitřek budovy mívá v tomto ročním období problémy s deštěm a sněhem…

Místní lázně od stejného architekta jsou rovněž podivné, protože nejvíce pozornosti se dostalo vstupním věžím, nikoli bazénům… Jako by měla přednost bezstarostnost a operetní scéna (ať žije Čardášová princezna) před šedou realitou… Obdobně vtipně na nás působily uniformy tamějších policistů: připomínaly dětské papírové vystřihovánky. V České republice o policii a jiných autoritách koluje spousta povedených vtipů, pročež na nás maďarští strážci zákona moc jako autority nepůsobili… Ale líbili se nám.

Hudba Naučili jsme se několik maďarských písní a docela nás překvapilo, že měly smutné texty, a vcelku optimistické nebo aspoň neutrální texty. Bylo nám řečeno, že když je typický Maďar šťastný, pláče.

Pozoruhodné. Také jsme se naučili pár národních tanců – většina byla docela rychlá, a tak jsme si museli dávat pozor a pořádně poslouchat rytmus, abychom někomu nešlápli na nohu…

Dějiny Vztah Maďarů k vlastní historii je nepochybně významný – národní památníky, sochy osobností, turulové (mýtičtí ptáci), kteří národ přivedli do země.

Korunovační klenoty, které jsme si prohlédli v budově parlamentu, nejsou pouze vystavovanými exponáty, ale také symboly státnosti hlídané čestnou stráží.

Na druhou stranu ochrana historických památek je v této zemi místy strašlivá: na vrcholu kopce v Budapešti „zrestaurovali“ křížovou klenbu kláštera coby součást hotelu Hilton, stejně tak hrad má naprosto strašlivá plastová okna a ruiny dalšího hradu, který jsme navštívili, jsou naprosto beznadějně zality betonem; vedle nejkrásnějšího barokního kostela v Pešti postavili moderní administrativní budovu, Národní divadlo nesmyslně zbourali kvůli výstavbě metra v šedesátých letech (a nyní tomu říkají „národní díra“)…

GUIDE AD FONTES RERUM EUROPAE from the Pupils´Point of View or Following the Cultural Footsteps of Middle Eastern Europe and the Cradle of Parliamentary Democracy Ani Sárospatak naneštěstí nezaostává: gotický kostel je „zdobený“ prvky sedmdesátých let – luxfery ve zpovědnicích, které tak vypadají jako veřejné toalety… Je ale také pravda, že jsme viděli i velmi pečlivě, detailně zachované interiéry kaváren a v Sárospataku jsme obdivovali nádhernou renesanční kamenickou práci. Životní prostředí Na cestách Maďarskem jsme nenavštěvovali jen památky, ale dostali jsme se i do „hor“ – například jsme si prohlédli region Zemplén s troskami hradu. Kromě pohoří Matra s nejvyšší horou Kékes jsou však možnosti horské turistiky velmi omezené. Bohužel jsme si nemohli nepovšimnout častých požárů v krajině, jak nám bylo vysvětleno, úmyslně založených zemědělci, kteří se takto zbavují starostí s úrodou a inkasují pojistky.

Přírodní bohatství Maďarska, které nejvíce láká turisty, jsou nepochybně lázně – nejen Budapešť jako největší lázeňské město světa, ale i mnohá městečka na venkově mají termální lázně, navíc za neuvěřitelně nízké ceny. Není divu, že jsou Maďaři tak úspěšní ve vodních sportech!

Náboženství Na rozdíl od ČR (pročež nám partnerská škola zadala prezentovat vztah Čechů k náboženství) hraje náboženství v životě Maďarů důležitou funkci, charakteristické pro všechna maďarská města je dvouvěží katolického a kalvínského (reformovaného) chrámu, nejinak i v Sárospataku, kde navíc vedle gymnázia se nacházel řeckokatolický kostel (Podkarpatská Rus je opravdu blízko). Většinou maurské prvky synagog (největší synagogu na světě jsme viděli v Budapešti a ochutnali jsme také košer jídlo v restauraci u této synagogy) doplňovaly tento kaleidoskop maďarských měst.

Po 2. světové válce však – kromě Budapešti – žádné větší židovské komunity nezůstaly a v Sárospataku mají z budovy synagogy obchodní dům. Dodnes je patrné dělení obyvatelstva podle konfese, tj. zda jsou katolíky nebo reformovanými (kalvinisty).

Sárospatak – místo, kde jsme bydleli Sáros znamená bláto a blátivý, patak značí potok nebo vodu. Do angličtiny by jej tedy bylo možné přeložit jako Muddy Waters (ano, jako toho bluesového muzikanta ze Chicaga). A tak jsme zkoumali, zda to sedí. Odpověď? Ano, sedí. Viděli jsme řeku a kolem ní… hromady bláta. Pokud v poledne budete procházet ulicemi, jistě všude uslyšíte készenem, sziésta nebo egeszegedre. Lidé vypadají velmi klidně a většinou se chovají velmi mile.

Chtěli bychom za to podělovat všem učitelům a hostitelským rodinám. Máme spoustu nových kamarádů a známe řadu míst, kam bychom se chtěli vrátit. ☺

TURECKO Další příležitost vycestovat do zahraničí, tentokrát do exotického Gaziantepu, se naskytla v červnu 2011. Setkání přecházela řada obav od otázky bezpečnosti až po pitelnost vody. Výsledek? Čtěte dále, co píší naši studenti, a dozvíte se…

Rádi bychom vám představili soubor postřehů stran odlišnosti České republiky a Turecka. Celkem mohli jet čtyři žáci (Ales, Denisa, Kristýna, Karolína a Libuše) a toto jsou naše zjištění. Doufáme, že si čtení a zamýšlení se nad našimi poznámkami užijete stejně tak, jako jsme si my užili celý pobyt v Turecku.

Obecné informace Výlet do Turecka nás velmi přitahoval, ale zároveň jsme netušili, co přesně máme čekat. Samozřejmě jsme se informovali, jaká je tamní situace, nicméně je vždy něco jiného, když se něco doslechnete – a když to zažijete na vlastní kůži. A proto jsme se těšili na potkávání nových lidí a ochutnávání nové kultury (přesněji bychom možná měli napsat tamního jídla).

Turecko je krásná země, jejíž hlavní část se nachází mimo Evropu. Jih se velmi liší od severozápadu (např. Istanbulu). Na první pohled působí trochu chuději, méně tolerantně, chaoticky a obecně podobněji Sýrii, Iráku etc. Bílí lidé jsou zde spíše raritou.

Díky tomu se cítíte být celebritami…Víme, že to zní směšně, nicméně když se procházíte po ulici a lidé vás zastavují a ptají se vás, odkud jste, jakým jazykem mluvíte, a ještě si vás chtějí vyfotit, tak se cítíte opravdu mimořádně.

Když jsme přijeli, VŠECHNO vypadalo jinak. Navíc pro nás bylo opravdu těžké se něco dozvědět o Turecku a jeho zvycích a tradicích, protože dokonce i když se nám naši 9

GUIDE AD FONTES RERUM EUROPAE from the Pupils´Point of View or Following the Cultural Footsteps of Middle Eastern Europe and the Cradle of Parliamentary Democracy hostitelé snažili ukázat tradičních věcí, co šlo, když jsme se jich na něco zeptali, obvykle nám kvůli své špatné angličtině nebyli schopni odpovědět.

Jedné věci jsme si však v Turecku všimli okamžitě: jsou patrioti. Je dobré vědět, že na všech těch známkách, pohlednicích, na stěnách v domácnostech, kancelářích, restauracích, dokonce i veřejných záchodcích (!), v ulicích, na facebookových profilech a všude jinde je jejich idol: Atatürk. Nám to připadalo docela zvláštní, protože takto naše někdejší prezidenty neuctíváme.

V praxi to tedy znamená, že státní vlajku a portrét jejich milovaného zesnulého prezidenta lze vidět VELMI často. Jak říká Ales: „Ty vlajky! Panebože, ty rudé turecké vlajky… byly prostě všude!”

A kam přesně jsme se vydali? Navštívili jsme samý východ země. Krajina je velmi podobná řecké či izraelské: suchá, neroste tam tráva a stromů uvidíte jen pomálu. Když se podíváte z letadla, uvidíte pískovou béž nebo cihlovou hnědou. A ačkoli je možné navštívit i krásné hory, Turecko je prakticky samá rovina.

Další zajímavostí, které nás upoutala, jsou neutuchající stavebnické práce. V celém Gaziantepu jsme viděli stovky stavenišť, hlavně na okraji města. Vlastně se nám zdálo, že zde není žádná finanční krize, jaká v současnosti sužuje USA, EU a další části světa. Turecko ji zažilo před deseti lety a od té doby jeho ekonomika roste. Sami Turci nás o tom ujišťovali…

Mešity Při projíždění městem bylo pro nás velmi zvláštní, že jsme všude viděli mešity s minarety. V České republice vídáme kostely.

Jídlo a pití Turecké jídlo chutná i vypadá velmi neobvykle. Chviličku nám trvalo, než jsme si na nové chutě zvykli.

A musíme vás varovat: ty chutě byly opravdu nepředvídatelné. To, co vypadalo jako sladké, se nakonec ukázalo být sýrem, zatímco ty nevinně vypadající přílohy byly pohříchu drsně kořeněny… Tamní obyvatelé navíc v souladu s náboženskými zásadami nejedí vepřové maso, což vysvětluje, proč nám tak často servírovali jehněčí (schválně, kolikrát takový typický Čech konzumuje toto maso? Prakticky vůbec…). Velmi oblíbená je také grilovaná zelenina s tunami různých druhů koření.

Co se sladkostí týče, můžete zde potkat dva druhy: jeden je extrémně sladký, zatímco druhý je prakticky bez chuti. Ať už si ale vyberete kterýkoli, zcela jistě v něm budou pistácie.

Je ji bohužel dost obtížné popsat, protože chutnala opravdu velmi odlišně od té u nás, ale byla výborná. Turci konzumují daleko více ovoce a zeleniny než my, snad i proto, že jsou sladší a chutnější. „Mně hrozně chutnaly ty melouny, jedla jsem je pořád,“ pochvalovala si Kristýna. A že jsme jich vskutku snědli hodně. Také jsme dostali takové malé zelené švestičky, které se jedly se solí. Bylo to překvapivé, protože u nás jsou namodralé a jíme je samotné. A pak ten čaj…

Turecký čaj je velmi chutný a pije se z maličkých skleniček docela směšného tvaru. Jakkoli možná zní podivně pít čaj v zemi, kde je horko, chutnalo nám. Abychom se vyhnuli možným zdravotním problémům, bylo nám doporučeno pít jen balenou vodu (z PET lahví, popř. menších kelímků, které nám připomínaly české balení jogurtů).

Pokud si na ulici budete chtít koupit zmrzlinu, nedostanete kopečkovou jako v Evropě. Ta turecká se seká na kousky a tím se tvaruje.

Co nás ale překvapilo nejvíc, byla skutečnost, že Turci pijí kávu, než si jdou lehnout. Tedy okolo desáté, dvanácté v noci. Když nám ji nabídli před půlnocí, byli jsme v šoku, protože doma kávu pijeme k snídani a pak nejpozději čtyři hodiny před odchodem do postele.

V restauracích je hodně číšníků (obvykle tak 6 mužů, žádná servírka), kteří se o vás vzorně postarají. Bylo to velmi pohodlné, tak jsme si to užívali. V České republice se setkáte spíše se stylem „obsluž se sám“. A když jdete na kávu, jistě neuniknete ani vodní dýmce, což je často navazující společenská aktivita.

Doprava Turecká doprava byla vážně děsivá: na tu jejich šílenou rychlost jsme si prostě nemohli zvyknout.

Navíc pořád troubili a nikdy si nezapínali bezpečnostní pásy. Policie je v tomto u nás velmi přísná, a tak nás udivilo, co je možné jinde. U nás navíc používáme troubení pouze tehdy, když hrozí nebezpečí. V Turecku… troubí a vypadají uvolněně. „Ten chaos na ulicích mi připomínal Itálii, ale podstatně drsnější,“ poznamenal Ales.

Také na nás udělalo dojem odpočítávání, kolik času zbývá do doby, než u přechodu pro chodce naskočí zelený panáček. Nad semafory zase mají měřák, který ukazuje, jak dlouho trvá stopka a kdy můžete vyjet. Zjistili jsme, že červená je zpravidla jednu minutu, zatímco zelená deset sekund.

Když budete cestovat autobusem, neplaťte za lístek při nástupu, zaplatíte, až když se vůz rozjede. Peníze pošlete zezadu autobusu dopředu po ostatních pasažérech až k řidiči. A když už jsme u vozů: turecký vozový park je rozhodně

Odhadli jsme, že asi o 18 let. Viděli jsme spoustu Fiatů, Peugeotů, Fordů a také Škodovek, jen pár japonských či korejských aut. A protože je v Turecku velmi drahý benzín, někdy i přes 2€za litr, poznačil Ales: „Teď už chápu, proč jsou všechny dálnice (s budkami pro výběr mýta) prázdné.” Velmi oblíbeným dopravním prostředkem je motorka.

Obecně lze říci, že stran dopravy si Turci opravdu hlavu nedělají (příklad na závěr: klasický skútr například klidně veze čtyři lidi a všichni jsou v pohodě).

Umění Hostitelská škola pro nás hned první den uspořádala koncert. A my jsme si jej ohromně užili. Turecká hudba je velmi odlišná od té naší, evropské, a to nejen hudební nástroje, ale i styl zpěvu. To jsme ocenili i díky svému působení na umělecky zaměřené škole. Koncert byl opravdu krásným zážitkem. A tradiční turecký tanec? Je docela jednoduchý, doprovází jej buben a velmi hlasitá trubka. Viděli jsme, že tamní lidé tancují všude – v obchodě, autobusu, prostě všude, kde je hudba. Ve škole jsme si pak povšimli řady maleb konkrétních objektů (což byla další odlišnost, protože u nás ve škole velmi často kreslíme spíše věci abstraktní).

Lidé a komunikace Obecně lze říci, že Turci jsou přídeští. Jsou pohostinní, nápomocní a pořád se usmívají. Tohle nám v ČR chybí!

Jsou také velmi hlasití a zdá se, že si život užívají naplno. Nám se to líbilo, protože doma takto se usmívající lidi nevidíme tak často. A jak jsme již řekli dříve, jsou patrioti. A velmi vášnivě jsou oddáni Mustafu Kemalu Atatürkovi.

K nám coby hostům se chovali velmi pěkně, ale nebylo vždy příjemné potkat tamní muže. Karolína říká: „Chtěla jsem vystoupit z letadla, ale nešlo to, protože tam stál chlap, co mne nechtěl pustit. Byla jsem naštvaná a překvapená zároveň, že mi nikdo nedával přednost.“ Vzhledem k tomu, že angličtina není na většině škol povinná, turečtí studenti v ní nijak nevynikají. To bylo příčinou drobných potíží, leč překonali jsme je. A i tak to byla škoda, protože jsme si s nimi chtěli víc povídat. Namísto toho jsme se jen usmívali. A co hůř, tato jazyková bariéra se netýkala jen studentů, ale i dospělých. Ti se na nás obvykle dívali dost podivně, jakmile zjistili, že jsme do Gaziantepu dorazili se znalostí pouze několika slov v jejich jazyce… Při konverzaci jsme si rovněž všimli, že používají jiná gesta. I to bylo místy překvapující, ale zvykli jsme si.

U nás to děvčata dělají též, ale vidět, jak se dva muži na ulici líbají, to nám přišlo prazvláštní. A také jsme viděli mnoho kuřáků. U nás se samozřejmě kouří též, ale ne tak moc. A co některé z nás obzvlášť pobavilo: vedle varování „kouření zabíjí“ na krabičkách cigaret bylo také zpodobeno, co přesně to může způsobit.

Turci mají početné rodiny; jeden pár mívá tak pět dětí. Hlavou rodiny je otec. A zpravidla bývají velmi pohostinní.

Oblékání Všimli jsme si, že Turci milují košile. A proč ne? Vypadají moc pěkně (obzvlášť děvčata to ocení), zatímco chlapci dávají v horkých dnech přednost tričkům. Podivné na tom je jedině to, že pod vším nosí tílka.

A další věc: závoje. Věděli jsme, že nejsou povinné, a tak jsme celou dobu pozorovali a srovnávali – a došli jsme k závěru, že to je tak půl napůl. A velmi záleží na to, kde se přesně nacházíte. V Gaziantepu je mladé ženy nenosí tak často, ale jdeme-li více na jih, např. do Antakye, jsou trochu rozšířenější.

Organizace Turci, zdá se, nemají jasné ponětí o čase, anebo s ním aspoň musí mít opravdu velký problém. Jediný čas, který uznávají, je čas na oběd a večeři (jakkoli ani tu nemají přesně vymezenu, prostě nastane v době okolo západu slunce).

Všimli jsme si, že naši hostitelé nepotřebovali tolik hodin spánku jako my. Možná to bylo typem stravy – jedí zdravé a výživné věci. Snad to vyzní jako nedůležité, ale jakkoli se nám velmi líbil program, prakticky celou dobu jsme byli vyčerpáni (viz fotka).

A co nás opravdu unavovalo a otravovalo? Nemohli jsme nikam jít sami. Víme, že to bylo kvůli bezpečnosti a byli jsme rádi, že nás provázejí turečtí studenti, ale celou dobu s sebou někoho vláčet, to bylo divné.

Další věc byla, že jsme si zvykli neustále poslouchat tamější hudbu. A ta je, jak už víte, velmi odlišná od hudby, na niž jsme zvyklí. Našim hostitelům se nicméně velmi líbí, a tak ji poslouchají bez přestání. A tak jsme se také naučili turecké slovo ses, které znamená hlas – a pokud jej zakřičí, znamená nahlas.

Prázdniny trvají tři měsíce, během nichž se nicméně studenti setkávají u školy a piknikují.

Nakupování Zjistili jsme, že vyměnit peníze v bance je naprosto neuvěřitelně dlouhé, především proto, že zaměstnanci neumějí anglicky. Tradiční turecký trh se jmenuje bazar a tam jsme si užili nakupování, především tedy poté, co jsme se naučili smlouvat. Bylo zajímavé pozorovat obchůdky přeplné různým zbožím. Také jsme si všimli člověka, který po obchodech roznášel prodavačům čaj.

Překvapila nás bezpečnostní kontrola, kdykoli jsme se vydali do nákupního centra. Nic takového jsme nikdy neviděli, ale chápali jsme, že i toto je pro naši bezpečnost. A ještě bylo zajímavé, že ve výlohách nemají cenovky.

Bydlení První věc, která vás upoutá při pohledu na typický turecký panelák, je střešní nádrž na vodu. Obvykle jich na jedné střeše najdete okolo dvaceti. Něco takového by nám v ČR vzalo dech!

Turecké byty jsou podstatně větší než ty naše. Malý byt má obvykle obývací pokoj, pokoj pro hosty (jídelnu), pokoj pro děti a ložnici (pro rodiče). U nás mladé páry bydlívají v bytech o dvou až třech pokojích celkem. Kromě velikosti mají samozřejmě pokoje i jinou výzdobu.

Závěr Nakonec jsme byli velmi šťastní, že jsme mohli jet. Jakkoli jsme občas byli úplně vyčerpáni nebo se situace nečekaně zkomplikovala, opravdu jsme si užili každou minutu pobytu v Turecku. Bavilo nás vlastní srovnávání a nacházení rozdílů mezi zeměmi. Získali jsme spoustu kamarádů a jen tak na tuto akci nezapomeneme. Velký dík!

VELKÁ BRITÁNIE Kamila, Lukáš, Monika a Václav do této báječné země zavítali na podzim a nyní by vám rádi prezentovali své postřehy.

Doprava Když se řekne silnice v Anglii, lidé z kontinentální Evropy se podívají doleva a vysvětlí vám, že Britové jezdí vlevo, takže zbytek světa si musí dávat pozor. To nicméně není vše, co uvidíte. Když jsme přijeli do Anglie my, byli jsme překvapeni již na letišti, protože to byla naše první zkušenost s britským řízením. Viděli jsme podivné značky, takové, které u nás v ČR neuvidíte: byla na nich světla a solární panely. (Proč? Přemýšleli jsme… V Británii je přece pořád deštivo, alespoň tak nás to učili ve škole…) Světlo bylo na většině z nich. U nás je to jednodušší, a tak se nám zdálo, že v Británii je to vlastně docela zbytečně, bezdůvodně komplikované.

Další věc, která nás udivila, byly nabarvené a popsané silnice. Působily dojmem, že si někdo vzal štětec a namaloval šipky a čáry. Také vypadaly velmi neuklizeně a vlastně i staře. Postranní čáry jsou žluté nebo bílé a místy jsou zdvojené.

Ve velkých městech najdete speciální trasy pro cyklisty, protože právě na kolech docela velká část populace jezdí do práce, obchodu i do školy. Někdy jsou tyto vyznačeny červeně. Rovněž jsme pozorovali, že britské přechody pro chodce jsou jiné než naše: nejsou na nich ty klasické obří bílé pruhy. Namísto toho jsou nabarvené celé a píše se na nich, kterým směrem se při přecházení máte dívat.

Jízda vlevo Lidem, kteří do Velké Británie jedou poprvé, se doporučuje, aby jezdili nalevo – ovšem to může být velmi obtížné. Aspoň nám to trvalo pět dní, než jsme se tomuto zvyku přizpůsobili, a pak nám to pro změnu činilo potíže po návratu domů… Řízení vlevo nicméně potkáte i na Kypru, v Austrálii, jižní Africe, Indii, Indonésii, Japonsku a na Novém Zélandu. Jediná potíž je, že tyto krajiny nenavštěvujeme právě často…

GUIDE AD FONTES RERUM EUROPAE from the Pupils´Point of View or Following the Cultural Footsteps of Middle Eastern Europe and the Cradle of Parliamentary Democracy Je pro nás tedy nepřirozené, když u auta vidíme volant vlevo… Milí Češi, když nastupujete do britského vozu, pamatujte, že sedadlo pro hosta se nachází vlevo, tak ať pak nemusíte v zahraničí řídit, to by byl jistě jeden z nejdrsnějších zahraničních zážitků!

Double-deckery Double-decker je typický britský červený autobus o dvou patrech. Většinou měří zhruba devět a půl metru a jsou jedenáct metrů dlouhé. Staré typy se již nepoužívají.

Typické taxíky Jejich barva je černá. A abyste je mohli v Londýně řídit, musíte studovat ulice tohoto velkoměsta celé čtyři roky a naučit se je, stejně jako všechny zákony, nazpaměť.

Používání pytlů s pískem Podivná věc, kterou jsme tak úplně nepochopili, je zabezpečení provizorních dopravních značení proti silnému větru. U nás značky zakotvíme do betonu. V Anglii je podepřou černými pytli s pískem.

Metro Londýnská podzemka zvaná tube je nejstarším metrem na světě. První část otevřeli v roce 1863. Má 270 zastávek, z nichž každá je originálně vyzdobena, a měří 402 km. Je tedy druhým nejdelším metrem na světě. Sedmého července 2005 se v něm konal útok skupiny islamistických extremistů na několik londýnských linek.

Je jich hodně a dokonce pro ně vznikly i nové dopravní značky. V hlavním městě jsme viděli hodně salutujících vojáků, kteří chrání královnu a její rodinu.

Domy Většina domů v okolí velkých měst si je velmi podobná. Bývají postaveny z cihel, mají malé předzahrádky a dvě patra. Některé starší domy mají posuvná okna. Uvnitř pak prakticky všechny podlahy pokrývá koberec – a to včetně schodů.

V Anglii se nachází řada starodávných, ale velmi dobře zachovaných domů. Například lázně v Bath, které postavili Římané. Tyto staré budovy obvykle bývají dostupné veřejnosti – a dějiny prezentují všem věkovým skupinám velmi interaktivně a zábavně.

Jídlo Většina jídel servírovaných ve Velké Británii chutná strašně pálivě.

Skoro v každém jídle najdete chilli, tedy v každém mase, omáčce nebo vařené zelenině. Některé restaurace to v závislosti na intenzitě značí jedním až šesti obrázky této ostré papričky. Rýži nicméně připravují nemastnou neslanou a vařené brambory v restauracích nepotkáte.

Typické anglické jídlo sestává z ryby a hranolků, popř. smažené tresky, tortily, brambor pečených ve slupce, různých druhů pikantních obalovaných kuřecích prsíček a hamburgerů. Všechno je velmi často smažené a podávané s hranolkami. Můžete samozřejmě ochutnat i řadu indických jídel, která jsou stále populárnější, lze říci, že je Britové přijali za vlastní. Dušení a používání koření pravděpodobně také přišlo z Indie.

V restauracích jsou spíše menší, ale ve školní jídelně mají studenti velký výběr z masa, rýže, hranolek, salátů, pečených příloh a vždy následuje zákusek.

Anglická snídaně je velmi štědrá. Začíná sklenkou pomerančového džusu, pak na stůl přijdou toasty, máslo, marmeláda, míchaná vejce, klobásky a šunka. K pití dostanete černý čaj, kávu anebo mléko. Britové během dne rádi popíjejí pomerančový džus a kávu se sušenkami nebo perníčky s cukrovou polevou.

Oblékání Britové jsou velmi drsní, protože v zimě vyhřívají své domovy pouze na 18 ºC. Východní a jižné pobřeží britských ostrovů zpravidla mívají mírné a relativně teplé podnebí, ale ve středu země je podstatně chladněji. Když jsme navštívili tuto krásnou a zajímavou zemi, často nám byla zima, i když jsme na sobě měli zimní bundy, šály a čepice. Naši angličtí kamarádi nicméně chodili v tričkách a letním oblečení. Většinou to byla stejná móda jako u nás, obzvlášť co se týká oblékání děvčat.

Studenti také nosí uniformy – různé, což závisí na příslušnosti k určité škole. Jsou také na ně i na své školy velmi hrdí. Uniformy pro chlapce většinou sestávají z kravaty, košile a klasických kalhot, zatímco děvčata nosí blůzy a krátké sukně.

Příroda Když se řekne „anglický trávník“, hned se vám vybaví krásný kultivovaný hustý trávník plný svěží zeleně, jaký roste jen v anglických parcích a zahradách. S našimi trávníky jej srovnávat nelze, neboť se nachází v jiných klimatických podmínkách. A tak není divu, že Britové milují relaxování na trávnících v parcích. Často uvidíte skupiny studentů v uniformách, jak o polední pauze posedávají na trávnících u školy. Krásu britských parků znají všude na světě.

Zahrady obklopující domy jsou rovněž pěstovány velmi pečlivě. Majitelé sekají trávu prakticky neustále, křoviny zastřihují do různých tvarů, rovněž velmi precizně. Každý chce mít lepší a krásnější zahradu než soused. Zahradničení je rozšířeným koníčkem.

Britské kohoutky Velmi typickým jevem jsou kohoutky dva: jeden na horkou a druhý na studenou vodu. Pro nás to bylo velmi složité, obzvláště ráno.

neumožňovala šetření vodou. Všechna voda v nádržce tak vytekla při jednom spláchnutí, což vyústilo nejen v plýtvání touto vzácnou surovinou, ale bylo také nemožné splachovat často – velmi nepohodlné, když toaletu potřebovalo rychle po sobě použít více lidí. Další typicky britská věc je koule na dveřích, v jejímž středu je umístěn zámek.

Zpěv Všimli jsme si, že britské dívky mají velmi příjemné hlasy, ale překvapilo nás, že všechny zpívají podstatně výš než třeba turecká děvčata a vlastně všechny ostatní ženy v naší výpravě.

Anglie je velmi zajímavé a krásní místo co do historických památek, dopravy, přírody i klimatu. Země a její životní styl se nám líbí. Proto výlet do Anglie rozhodně doporučujeme. Lidé jsou velmi příjemní a muži gentlemani. Pokud se nás někdo zeptá, zda bychom jeli znova, rozhodně odpovíme ANO. ☺

POLSKO V březnu 2012 se konalo poslední setkání projektu AFRE, tentokrát v Polsku.

Lidé Lidé v Polsku jsou milejší a laskavější než u nás. Navzdory tomu nicméně působí velmi přísně a studeně, například když vejdete do obchodu. Vypadají naštvaně, nezeptají se, co byste si přáli, neusmívají se a skoro nemluví. To tedy bylo docela divné. V České republice to není kdovíjak super, ale aspoň se nebojíte jako

Prodavač prostě řekne: „Dobrý den, co to bude?“ nebo „Tady to máte, děkuji. Mějte se.“ Před návštěvou Polska jsme si mysleli, že to je málo.

Také jsme se dostali do školy. Byly tam plakáty s nápisy „Vítejte v naší škole“ a na zdech visely fotky z návštěv partnerských zemí. Opravdu vřelé přijetí. A stejně tak chování tamějších lidí. Studenti byli neuvěřitelně laskaví, pomáhali nám, kdykoli jsme něco potřebovali, a snažili se nám zpříjemnit pobyt, seč jim síly stačily. Ve srovnání z toho naše školy vycházejí docela smutně. U nás by takové chování nastávalo u zainteresovaných jedinců, ale celkově spontánně spíše ne.

V Polsku jsme si také nevšimli ničeho originálního. Lidé se tak často nezařazují do skupin nebo nevyznávají nějaký konkrétní styl jako my Češi. Každý prostě hrdě jde s proudem.

Mladí se oblékají moderně a sportovně a dámy ve středním věku jsou velmi elegantní. V ulicích nicméně neuvidíte nikoho s dredy nebo originálním (mírně uhozeným) oblečením jako u nás.

A také učitelé jsou jiní. Bývají spíše mladí a přísní; hodiny vedou pevnou rukou. Každý (nebo spíše každá) byl oblečen velmi vkusně; ženy vždy na vysokých podpatcích a docela překvapivě s sebou nosily kabelky, kamkoli šly. Do třídy vždy dorazily s perfektním mejkapem. To u nás má každý učitel svůj vlastní styl a nosí rozličné oblečení. Do třídy ale české učitelky chodí zásadně bez kabelek.

A co se týče paní ředitelky: jakkoli u nás ve škole máme opravdu milou a vstřícnou ředitelku, ta polská byla jako naše kamarádka. Každý den se nás ptala, jak se nám daří, objímala nás a nic pro ni nebyl problém.

Mladí Poláci jsou velmi slušní, ne rebelové jako u nás. My jsme prostě úplně jiní. Málokdy potkáte příjemnější a nápomocnější lidi než v Polsku – tam se cítíte jako v jedné velké rodině. Takže platí, co se o Polácích píše: vypadají přísně, ale jsou to báječní lidé.

Architektura Když jsme vyjeli do Polska, velmi nás zajímalo, nakolik se mlže lišit architektura sousedního státu. Zjistili jsme nicméně, že je opravdu docela zvláštní…

Do Varšavy jsme dorazili pozdě večer, dali jsme si věci do hotelu a spěchali na

Až další den jsme vyrazili za památkami. Upřímně řečeno se nám ale moc nelíbily a my byli trochu zklamaní, protože předchozího večera vypadaly slibněji. Postrádali jsme například centrum města, které by bylo plné lidí a míst, kde by si dávali sraz. To u nás vypadá jinak; lidé jsou v ulicích prakticky pořád. Kromě prázdnoty Varšavy se ještě nabízí slovo dezolátnost. A konečně nás překvapilo i to, že jsme neviděli ani jeden park či nějaké jiné místo plné zeleně. Byly tam prostě dlouhé prázdné ulice.

Největším šokem pro nás samozřejmě byly prefabrikované domy. Samozřejmě nesmíme zapomínat, že Varšava byla během Druhé světové války vybombardovaná. Možná to bývalo nádherné a historicky důležité město. Ale dnes… Krásnou starou budovu obklopovala stará hnusná šedá komunistická prefabrikovaná stavba… Příšerné.

Královský hrad moc jako královský nevypadal, ale zevnitř byl krásný, velký a my se v něm dlouho zdrželi. A že to byl úžasný zážitek. Hrad sloužil jako oficiální sídlo polských panovníků a v letech 1926 – 1939 v něm pobýval prezident. Dnes je součástí národního muzea. Mnozí vládci hrad nechali přestavět, za Druhé světové války jej (i celé město) bombardovala německá armáda a roku 1944 byl opět poškozen, tentokrát v době varšavského povstání.

Centrum města mi chybělo i ve Gdyni, kde jsme trávili většinu času.

Město bohužel není příliš zajímavé, zřejmě i proto, že povětšinou vzniklo ve dvacátém století. Jedno místo nás ale zaujalo – přístav. Pláž tam mají vážně okouzlující se vším tím všudypřítomným jemňoučkým pískem, molem, racky a labutěmi. Bylo to nádherné.

Třetím místem, které jsme navštívili, byl Gdaňsk. A ten nám opravdu vzal dech, jak byl krásný. Vypadá jako dobrá restaurátorská práce, ale často jde o nově postavené budovy (alespoň centrum). Ano, tady jsme konečně našli centrum města podle svých představ – srdce města se spoustou lidí. A také rozkošné malé uličky s úzkými vysokými domy. V nich byly obchůdky či kavárničky a před nimi pak stánky s jantarem. Viděli jsme i promenádu s řadou lidí a holubů. Římsko-katolický kostel sv. Marie byl založen v roce 1379 a dokončen roku 1502. Říká se, že to je největší cihlový kostel na světě a že to býval největší evangelicko-luteránský kostel na světě. Měří 105,5 m na délku a má 66 m širokou loď. Vejde se do něj 25 000 lidí. Zdi jsou bílé a interiér bohužel velmi nevkusný až kýčovitý. Výzdoba byla stylově velmi různorodá, což svým celkovým neladem vytvářelo dojem kýče. Strop s horními zdmi byl prázdný.

Až na tento kostel je město opravdu krásné, dobře zachované a vkusné. Nejhezčí 21

Obecně vzato lze říci, že se polská architektura podobá té naší. Zkusili jsme najít nejvýraznější rozdíly ve vzhledu českých a polských měst a podle našeho názoru jsou to tyto: V Polsku, zejména na severu, je odlišná architektura z doby gotiky – cihlová gotika, která se na našem území takřka nevyskytuje a je u nás zastoupená většinou jen díky vazbám na Polsku (česká královna polského původu Eliška Rejčka založila cihlové kostely na Starém Brně a Hradci Králové, další polské vlivy jsou patrné v Opavě).

Polsko se muselo vyrovnávat více než české země s následky 2. světové války, mnohá velká polská města přišla o své historické centrum, naopak českým zemím se přímé válečné škody vyhly takřka úplně, z pohledu zachovalosti památkového fondu tak tvoří Česká republika výjimečnou zemi ve střední Evropě. Zatímco obnově Varšavy jako hlavního města byla systematická pozornost věnována ihned po skončení 2. světové války, jiná města – Gdaňsk, Wroclaw ad. musely na svou obnovu čekat další desetiletí. Ve vzhledu těchto měst se již aplikovaly jiné zásady památkové péče, byly lépe zpracovány podklady a výsledek působí autentičtěji než v případě Varšavy. Tak jsme sami nepoznali, že centrum Gdaňsku bylo zničené takřka ve srovnatelné míře jako Varšava! Ve Varšavě jsme obdivovali náročnou práci restaurátorů královského zámku, který byl jako poslední stavba v centru dokončen až v roce 1980, modernější přístupy v památkové péči opět i zde ukázaly velký rozdíl mezi staršími a mladšími rekonstrukcemi zničených objektů.

V Polsku – stejně jako v českých zemích – existuje v architektuře dvojí tradice – kvalitní práce významných cizích umělců pro nejbohatší objednavatele vedle domácí řemeslné tradice, mnohdy se oba směry setkaly na jediné stavbě.

Cizím importem je rovněž sporná stavba Paláce vědy a kultury od sovětského architekta Rudněva, která nenavazovala na původní (a bohužel nezachovanou) uliční síť ani na tradici polské architektury a kopírovaly mrakodrapy stalinské Moskvy.

V Polsku opravdu není jasné, co je „polská architektura“ – vždyť mnohá historická města dnes v Polsku neleží (Vilnius, Lvov), naopak jiná nebyla součástí polského státu v daném období, takže například vzhled historického centra Gdaňsku je ovlivněn více ostatními hanzovními městy (Lubeck) než tehdejší polskou architekturou. Politické rozdělení Polska na zónu ruskou, rakouskou a pruskou (německou) se 22

GUIDE AD FONTES RERUM EUROPAE from the Pupils´Point of View or Following the Cultural Footsteps of Middle Eastern Europe and the Cradle of Parliamentary Democracy projevilo v 19. století také na odlišném vzhledu veřejných staveb (nádraží, divadla, školy, nemocnice) v jednotlivých záborech, tato trojí tradice tak zůstává poznatelnou součástí polských měst.

V neposlední řadě vám chceme představit některé vtipné odlišnosti češtiny a polštiny. Jeden z nás například v hostitelské rodině použil pochvalné české slovo „chytrý“ k popisu mladého chlapce. U nás to znamená „inteligentní“, ale v Polsku jsme se tím výrazem ztrapnili, protože znamená „sobecký“. A podobných by se našlo víc: naše slovo „čerstvý“ naopak polsky znamená „starý“. „Jahoda“ je polsky „borůvka“ atd…

Jídlo, příroda a doprava Nyní je načase vám povědět o jídlu, přírodě a dopravě u našich severních sousedů. První den jsme cestovali vlakem a dívali se okny na krásnou českou krajinu. Když jsme však přejeli hranici, výhled se změnil: kolem vlaku bylo vše šedé a nudné; krásné budovy obklopeny šedí.

Zmátlo nás to a překvapilo. Neztráceli jsme nicméně naději a těšili se na první oběd. A nebyli jsme zklamáni: šli jsme do KFC a dali si twistery, hranolky, kolu a další lahůdky! I večeře byla výborná, jakkoli někteří členové výpravy měli výhrady a tvrdili, že byla ještě živá. Dovodili jsme tedy toto pravidlo: jezte rychle, než vám vaše vlastní večeře sní brambory!

Následující obědy a snídaně jsme jedli v hostitelských rodinách, takže jsme poznali spoustu polských jídel – a chutnaly povětšinou jako ta naše česká jídla, například kuře nebo ryba s bramborami. A chutnaly nám i večeře v restauracích, protože je vařili opravdoví odborníci.

Ve Varšavě jsme cestovali autobusem a vlakem, zatímco v Gdyni jsme jezdili městkou hromadnou dopravou. To vše se příliš nelišilo od systému dopravy v ČR.

Nikdo jsme nevěděli, jaký tanec nás naučí – a byli jsme překvapeni, že polonézu, protože tímto tancem každoročně slavnostně začínají naše plesy. Polonézu jsme se učili v obří tělocvičně. Každý host měl polského partnera a přidali se dokonce i někteří učitelé.

Moc jsme si to užili. Poslední tanec obsahoval všechny figury.

Každopádně škola vypadala velmi nezajímavě a nudně. A to bohužel i vevnitř. Všechny zdi byly nabílo, pouze sem tam visely fotky z výletů, diplomy s úspěchy studentů, ale nikde kresby či malby.

Překvapila nás paní ředitelka, která se s námi všemi hned seznámila, jakkoli měla sama práce dost.

Polští kamarádi nás vzali do tříd a pak jsme se setkali ještě v tělocvičně. Přivítali nás polsky a pak jsme si sedli dozadu. Pět minut před koncem hodiny si Julia, která mne ubytovávala, vytáhla sešit a pečlivě si zapsala látku. A celou dobu se na nás někdo otáčel a usmíval. Jakmile hodina skončila, všichni studenti vstali a šli k nám, a tak jsme se seznámili asi s dvaceti žáky a museli jim opakovat svá jména. Všichni Juliini spolužáci byli velmi milí. Překvapilo nás, že se chtěli seznámit s někým starším a navíc cizincem. Stydliví nebyli, naopak byli velmi akční. Hned nám vysvětlili, kde co je. Jejich angličtina nebyla úplně skvostná, ale vždy jsme si rozuměli.

Pak jsme se rozdělili podle národností a každou skupinu provedl po škole jeden polský student. Škola to je velká s hodně třídami, tělocvičnou a v přízemí i velkými šatnami. Viděli jsme výuku; žáci se nás občas na něco zeptali (odkud jsme, jak se jmenujeme a kolik nám je let). Některé učebny byly zaměřeny na výuku dějepisu, biologie, jazyků či občanské výchovy a měly moderní nábytek. Podívali jsme se například do prázdné učebny biologie – vzadu byla skříň s vycpanými zvířaty a vedle nich stála kostra.

Všimli jsme si také, že v každé učebně nade dveřmi visel kříž. A pod ním oranžové světlo. Proč? Netušili jsme. Až po hodině nám došlo, že to funguje namísto zvonění!

Další odlišností bylo, že někteří studenti nosili modré uniformy s bílým školním logem. Neodhalili jsme nicméně, zda jde o možnost či nutnost. Většina dívek měla trička a chlapci nosili vesty. I když to byla uniforma, přespříliš formálně naštěstí nevypadala.

V celé škole jsme pozorovali velmi dobré mravy. Možná tam neměli problémy ses studenty. O přestávkách byli studenti v chodbách hluční, ale k žádným střetům nedocházelo. Všichni se chovali výborně; byli ohleduplní. V hodinách byli žáci potichu. Když něčemu nerozuměli, okamžitě se na to učitele zeptali. Navíc v hodinách nežvanili, čímž se trochu lišili od některých hodin u nás. Studenti také před hodinou čekali na učitele v chodbách. V každé třídě bylo 15 – 20 studentů, což, myslíme, je ideální počet.

Učitelé se oblékali elegantně, jakož i všechny dámy ve středním věku, které jsme v Polsku viděli. Naopak jsme nikoho neviděli v džínách. Jen učitelé tělocviku měli tepláky.

Náš celkový dojem ze školy byl velmi dobrý.

Také jsme zjistili, že polský vzdělávací systém se liší od toho našeho: polská základní škola (szkoła podstawowa) trvá šest let a děti ji začnou navštěvovat v sedmi letech. To je skoro stejné jako u nás (v ČR trvá základní školní docházka devět let). Pak jdou děti na tři roky na „gimnazjum“, což je totéž, jako u nás základní škola. „Szkoła ponadgimnazjalna” (střední škola) trvá tři roky a lze vybírat z těchto druhů: obecná střední škola (liceum ogólnokształcące), což odpovídá našemu gymnáziu, dále „liceum profilowane”, což je totéž jako specializovaná střední škola gymnaziálního typu (obvykle zaměřená na počítače nebo na jazyky) nebo vyšší odborná škola (ekonomie, business, umění); mají také „technikum”, což je průmyslová škola, a učňovské obory (zasadnicza szkoła zawodowa). „Uczelnia wyższa“ pak znamená univerzita.

HUNGARY In April 2011, the project continued in Hungary.

Five students from our school had the opportunity to go to an international students meeting in Hungary. We had not known what exactly to expect but it turned up to be a great week. Hungary is not far from the Czech Republic but it is a completely different country: colourful and interesting. The week was amazing.

Inhabitants The first two days we spent in the centre of Budapest and the capital of Hungary made a very strong impression on us: a lovely city on the banks of a mighty river, a wonderful example of the architecture and buildings – although it cannot be observed – were built in a short period between 1867 and 1914. Historic styles (Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque) served only as a free sampler for the creation of the frontispieces. We went by the oldest underground in Europe, saw the hall of the Western railway station designed by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel – Hungary tried to impress foreigners at least in the capital then. Current Budapest lives differently than the provincial part of the state as well – we noticed immediately that there are big differences between Budapest and the rest of the country: whereas there are two million inhabitants in the capital and a million commuters, the rest of the ten-million country (apart from the western part near the border with Austria) is undeveloped.

Not only jobs but also shopping possibilities are unrivalled in Budapest: in the huge shopping mall of West End City Center by the Western railway station we got lost several times and compared the prices to ours. Whereas the Czechs pay less for food when at home, going shopping for designer clothes (especially quality shoes which are four times cheaper there: 5 000 vs 20 000 HUF) so Hungary is worth it. This might explain why the Hungarians – in the view of the prices – tend to buy less food before going on long travels abroad compared to other nations. The more surprising it was for us when we found out that the prices in restaurants are not that different from Czech prices – and the portions were big and tasty everywhere. Sometimes we were a bit surprised by some combinations of side-dishes (rice and steaks, more side-dishes with

In the Czech Republic, we have either rice or chips but never these two together.

The more to the east, the more it is apparent that the rich Budapest is really far away – Sárospatak lies 12 km from the border with east Slovakia (and the nearest cultural centre of Košice) and 70 km from Ukraine whereas it took four hours to get to Budapest.

The inhabitants of Hungary mostly consist of the Hungarians as the minorities are practically neglectable. However, since the Treaty of Trianon, many populous Hungarian minorities have stayed in the neighbouring states. Although we could not notice and judge this ourselves, statistics show that Hungarian population is rapidly decreasing.

As for the relationship between the cities and countryside, we learnt that during the long Turkish occupation the inhabitants often moved into countryside-type towns which were under direct protection of the sultan. Thus huge Hungarian areas were depopulated (i.e. forsaken = “puszta”) and it was there where after the era of the Turkish predominance people from other places (including Moravia) moved.

Speaking about the countryside, we were astonished when we saw a lot of fire in the fields basically everywhere. We had thought that the country suffers from conflagration but we were told that it was a tradition when lazy people burn the field when they want to avoid ploughing it.

Language abilities of the population are very similar to other central-east European countries: older generations speak German, the middle generation has forgotten Russian which they had to learn and the youngest ones speak English. Although Slovakia is near the place where we stayed (Sárospatak), the Hungarians spoke no Slovak at all.

The grammar school at Sárospatak offers its students the possibility of quality language education: English, German, Russian as well as Italian. It was very practical for us to learn a few Hungarian words and phrases which we highly recommend to all visitors of this country.

The Hungarian population, despite of all the handed-down clichés describing their “fiery temper”, mostly behaves politely; pedestrians right of way is not violated at all. We were highly amused by the fact that a greeting common in the Czech Republic – when a girl kisses another girl – was considered a clear sign of homosexual orientation. Some Hungarians asked if the Czech girls were lesbians. And it was just a sign of friendship! As they were told by other groups, too, this custom has taken off practically all over Europe.

We also noticed that – despite the visible neglected infrastructure (buses, trains, non-fixed facades which are being repaired only recently) – the Hungarians are trying to have everything clear. You can observe this in Budapest: no cigarette butts on the ground, no spits. Who knows why it is different in our hometown 27

GUIDE AD FONTES RERUM EUROPAE from the Pupils´Point of View or Following the Cultural Footsteps of Middle Eastern Europe and the Cradle of Parliamentary Democracy where people do not hesitate to spit on public places and make a lot of mess. Also, the drivers seemed to be more careful, letting the pedestrians cross. To us, Budapest looks like a very peaceful and quiet place.

Visual style The relationship to folk art was very strong in Hungary since the end of the 19th century. Like in other countries, the artists tried to join modern styles with components of folk art. We learnt about the national romanticism of the end of the 19th century. Hungarian interest in folk art influenced romanticism as well as art nouveau: one of the best-known modern composers of the 20th century Béla Bartók collected folk songs too. However, we considered some current pieces of art really strange, e. g. the decalcomania at Holloház (many thanks for the possibility to decorate their great ceramics with our own ideas): the functionalist traditions are apparently stronger in Brno than in Hungary… The last works of Imre Makovecz that we could see in Sárospatak look really magnificent but reminded us of stage set: compared to the impressive foyer, the halls of the grammar school are rather narrow, high rooms unpractical and surely not of much use in winter, they say that the interior also suffers from rains and snow… The local spa by the same architect is also strange as the most attention was paid not to the swimming pools but to the entrance towers…

As if carefreeness and a certain operetta stage scenery (long live the Csardas Princess!) were preferred to grey reality… Similarly funnily looked the uniforms of the Hungarian policemen: children’s paper cut-outs (see later).

You see, not only buildings attracted us visually: the clothes that local policemen wore looked like made of paper. In the Czech Republic, there are lots of jokes about policemen and authorities as such so… policemen wearing “paper” do not look serious. We liked them, anyway.

Music We learnt a couple of Hungarian songs and it was quite surprising that these had sad melodies and optimistic or at least neutral lyrics. We were told that when a typical Hungarian is happy, s/he cries. Very interesting. We also learnt some typical Hungarian dances – most of them quite fast so that we had to listen to the rhythm carefully not to kick someone else´s leg…

GUIDE AD FONTES RERUM EUROPAE from the Pupils´Point of View or Following the Cultural Footsteps of Middle Eastern Europe and the Cradle of Parliamentary Democracy History The Hungarian relation to their own history is evidently an important part of their own story – national memorials, statues of their personalities, turuls (mythical birds) who brought the Hungarians into their current homeland. The coronation jewels that we could see under the dome of the parliament are not just museum exhibits but also symbols of statehood around which guards of honour walk.

On the other hand, the protection of historical sights is sometimes really catastrophic in Hungary: on the top of a hill in the castle district a cross vault of a cloister was “restored” as a part of the Hilton Budapest hotel, the castle has the most awful plastic windows imaginable, the ruins of a castle that we visited are mostly hopelessly embedded in concrete, next to the nicest baroque church in Pest there is a modern administration building, the National Theatre was

nonsensically

demolished

because

of

underground

construction in the sixties (and now they call it the “national hole”)… Unfortunately, Sárospatak does not fall behind: the gothic church is “decorated” by the design features of the seventies – glass blocks or confessionals that look like public toilets… However, on the other hand we can find very carefully preserved café interiors including all details and at Sárospatak we admired great stonemanson´s renaissance works…

Environment During our travels through Hungary we did not only visit historic sights but also their “hills” – e. g.

Zemplen with the castle ruins. Apart from the Matra Hills with the highest peak of Kékes, the possibilities of mountaineering are very limited. The Hungarian natural riches that attract tourists the most include thermal spas: not only those in Budapest as the biggest spa city in the world but also those in the small country towns which surprise tourists with incredibly low entrance fees. It is not surprising that the Hungarians stand out in water sports!

Unfortunately it was impossible to fail to notice frequent fire in the landscape which – as we were told – are started by farmers so as they do not have to work on the fields.

Religion The partner school set the topic of religion and our relation of it as a basis for our presentation. Unlike in our country, religion is very important in

GUIDE AD FONTES RERUM EUROPAE from the Pupils´Point of View or Following the Cultural Footsteps of Middle Eastern Europe and the Cradle of Parliamentary Democracy the lives of the Hungarians, the towers of Catholic and Calvinist (reformed) churches are typical of all their towns and so it is in Sárospatak where next to the building of the grammar school was a Greek Orthodox church (Carpathian Ruthenia is really near). The kaleidoscope of Hungarian towns was completed by the Moorish features at the synagogues (of which the biggest we could see in Budapest and we tasted kosher meals in a nearby restaurant). Apart from Budapest, after WWII there remained no bigger Jewish communities and the synagogue at Sárospatak was changed into a shopping centre.

To this day, there is a clear division of the population according to their faith, i. e. Catholics or reformed Calvinists.

The place where we stayed in: Sárospatak Sáros means mud or muddy and Patak stands for a spring or water.

Thus, Sárospatak can be translated as Muddy Waters (like the blues musician from Chicago). We went to check if the name fits. And the answer? Yes, it does.

We saw a river and a lot of mud all around.

If you walk down the streets at noon, you can hear készenem, sziésta or egeszegedre everywhere. People look and most of them are very peaceful and nice to everybody.

Miscellaneous You can see that we had a great, truly Hungarian experience. We would like to take the opportunity to thank all the teachers and host families. We made a lot of new friends and saw places where we would like to go again. ☺

TURKEY In June 2011, the participants explored Turkey.

We are happy to present to you a set of reflections and observations of differences between the Czech Republic and Turkey. There were four of us students in our group (Ales, Denisa, Kristýna, Karolína and Libuše) and this is what we noticed was different. We hope you

comparing our notes as much as we enjoyed the whole “Turkish” experience.

General information We were really excited about our trip to Turkey because had not known what to expect. We were familiar with the situation in Turkey. However, it is always different to hear about something and then really experience it. And for that we were looking forward to meeting new people and taste new culture (or we should better say taste Turkish food).

Turkey is a beautiful country situated with its main part out of Europe. The south of Turkey is very different from the north-west (e.g. Istanbul). Firstly, it seems a bit poorer, intolerant, chaotic and generally more similar to Syria, Iraq etc. White people are something very unusual there. It makes you feel like a celebrity. We realize that it sounds funny, however, when you walk down the street and strangers ask you about your country, language and what is more they want to take picture of you, that really makes you feel special.

When we arrived, EVERYTHING seemed different. Overall it was hard for us to find out more about Turkey and its traditions because even when our hosts tried to show us as many traditional things as possible, when we had questions they usually were not able to answer because of their poor English.

One thing you notice immediately when you get to Turkey is that they are patriots. A very important thing is that their idol Atatürk is almost everywhere. On stamps, postcards, households, bureau offices, restaurants, toilets (!), streets, facebook accounts etc. It seemed strange to us because we do not honour our late presidents this way.

As Ales says: “The flags! Oh my God, the flags... they were pretty much everywhere!”

We went to the very east of Turkey. The landscape is close to what you can see in Greece or Israel. It is dry with lack of grass and few trees only. The colour you see when you look at it from the plane is sand beige or brick brown. And although it is possible to visit beautiful mountains in Turkey the country is flat most of the time.

Another interesting thing we noticed is that there still is a big construction boom. As we travelled through the city of Gaziantep we saw hundreds of construction sites around the peripheries of the city. In fact there was no big financial crisis as in the USA or EU and other parts of the world. Turkey experienced a crisis a decade ago and since that time its economy is going very well. The Turks we asked about it assured us we were right.

Mosques When driving through cities, it felt very different for us to see mosques with their minarets everywhere. In the Czech Republic, we are used to seeing churches.

Food and drinks Food in Turkey looks and also tastes very unfamiliar. It took us a little while to get used to the new taste. Also, it is important to note and warn our countrymen that the taste was really unpredictable: what looked sweet turned up to be cheese and innocent-looking dishes were heavily spiced… Moreover, Turkish people (according to their religion) do not eat pork and this explains why they eat lots of lamb instead (how many times a year does an average Czech eat lamb? Well, rarely any…). Grilled vegetable and tons of different kinds of spices are also very popular.

There are two groups of sweets in Turkey. Group one is extremely sweet and group two has almost no taste.

And this seems that pistachios are in everything.

We fell in love with Turkish rice. Unfortunately we cannot describe the taste as was so different from ours and tasted great! Also, the Turks eat much more vegetables and fruits than we do and these are sweeter 32

GUIDE AD FONTES RERUM EUROPAE from the Pupils´Point of View or Following the Cultural Footsteps of Middle Eastern Europe and the Cradle of Parliamentary Democracy and tastier. “I love melons so I was pleased to eat them all the time,” said Kristýna. And really we got to eat lots of melons. There were also little green plums that could be eaten with salt. That is different from us because our plums are purple-blue and we eat them just as they are. And the tea… Turkish tea is very tasty and is drunk from little glasses of a rather funny shape. As much as it might sound weird to drink tea in a country of hot climate like Turkey, it was fine and very good.

To avoid health problems, we were encouraged to drink only bottled water which is available not only in bottles but also in little plastic cups (which reminded us of those the Czechs use for yogurt).

If you want to buy ice cream on the street, you will not get a scoop like in Europe. Turkish ice cream is cut in pieces by a stick and that forms its shape.

What surprised us probably the most, was that Turkish people serve coffee before they go to bed.

About 10 or 12 pm. We were shocked when they offered us coffee before midnight because in our country we drink coffee for breakfast or after lunch but usually not less than 4 hours before we go to bed. In restaurants, there are a lot of waiters (usually about 6 men, no waitresses) who take care of you. It was very comfortable and we enjoyed it. Compared to this, what we get in the Czech Republic is more like a “serve yourself” service. Also, when you go for a coffee, a water pipe is a commonly shared afterwards.

Traffic The Turkish traffic was scary: we could not get used to the high speed they drive. They kept beeping all the time and they never used seat belts. The police in our country are very strict about seat belts so we were surprised that it was okay not to wear them. And also, on our roads we only use the horn when there is something dangerous. In Turkey, they beep and they still seem to be relaxed. “The chaos on the streets was kind of what I experience in Italy but more radical,” said Ales. The "time-to-green" counters impressed us. While waiting at a red, the lights above show you how long you will have to wait for the green man. Over traffic signs, they have stop-watches that measure time when is red and when is green. Red there is usually 1 minute and green there is about 10 seconds.

When you go by Turkish bus, you do not pay for tickets when you enter. You are going to pay when ride is in progress. It means that your money may be passed from the very back of the bus to the front and be held by all passengers sitting closer to the driver.

The vehicles are below the European average. We guess that the average age of Turkish rolling stock is over 18 years. We saw lots of Fiats, Peugeots and Renaults, Fords and also Škodas but only few Japanese and Korean cars. Also, in Turkey, gas is very expensive. Sometimes it gets over 2€ per litre. “Now I know why are all 33

In Turkey it is very popular to ride a motorcycle. Generally speaking, we could say they are “relaxed” about the traffic (an example: a standard scooter carrying four people and no one seemed to worry about it).

Art The host school gave a concert on the very first day of our stay. And we did enjoy it! Turkish music is so different. Not just their musical instruments but also their voices. We could appreciate it because we attend a school specialising in arts. The concert really was a beautiful experience. Turkish traditional dance is quite simple, accompanied by drum and trumpet (very loud). We could see that Turkish people like to dance everywhere possible. Mall, bus, whenever there is music, they dance. We noticed that in the school, there were a lot of realistic paintings (in contrast to our country where we are also familiar with abstract paintings).

People and communication Generally said, people of Turkey are friendly. They are hospitable, helpful and they keep smiling. We miss that in the Czech Republic! They are also loud and seem to enjoy their lives.

We liked that because at home we do not see people smile or chat this way. As mentioned above they are patriots. With passionate love for Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

They were really lovely to us as their guests but not all Turkish men were that pleasant to meet. As Karolína said: “I wanted to get out of an airplane but I just could not because there was a man who did not want to let me go. I was angry and surprised that no one gave way to me.”

According to the fact that English is not a required subject at most of the schools, Turkish students were not brilliant at it. That created complications but eventually we managed. It was a pity though because there could have been more conversation among us.

Instead we only smiled.

And what is worse, besides students, we did not find many people speaking

English. Usually people gave us strange looks when they found out that we came to Turkey knowing only a few words in their language. When talking to Turkish citizens, we also noticed that they use a different sign language. It was surprising but we got used to it.

Probably the most surprising Turkish habit is kissing when saying “hello”.

Girls in the Czech Republic do it too but to see two men kissing on cheeks seemed strange to us.

Czech people smoke too but not as much as those in Turkey. What some of Czech students found funny was that next to a warning on a cigarette box such as “smoking kills” was also placed a picture with what exactly can smoking do.

The Turks have numerous families – one couple usually have about five kids.

The head of family is the father. In Turkey, they are very hospitable.

Clothing We noticed that the Turks love to wear shirts. And why not? Shirts look nice (girls could tell). But our boys rather wear t-shirts especially in hot summer days. The weird thing (for us) is they also wear vests under everything.

Next thing was the veiling. We knew it was not obligatory so we kept observing and comparing during the whole trip and we think it is fifty fifty. It really depends in what part of Turkey you are. In Gaziantep, young women do not wear them so often but when we go more to the south (e. g. Antakya), it gets a little bit more "popular".

Organization Turkish people do not seem to have a concept of time or at least they must have big problems with it. The lunch and the dinner time is the only time they know (and the dinner time is not specified as it is usually around the sunset).

We noticed that our hosts did not need so many hours of sleep as we did.

Maybe it was because of what food they eat (healthy and nutritious). It may not seem important but as much as we loved the program, we were exhausted most of the time (see the picture).

What we found bothering while being in Turkey was that we never could go anywhere alone. I know that it was for our protection and I was thankful that the Turkish students were willing to accompany us but it felt strange to keep having someone with us all the time.

Another thing that we had to get used to was listening to Turkish music all the time. As mentioned above, it is very different. However, our hosts enjoyed it and listened to it all the time. So that is how we learned a Turkish word “ses” (which means “voice” and when they shout it, they mean “louder, please”).

Holidays take three months during which time the students feel free to meet round the school and have picnics.

Shopping We found out that to exchange money in a bank takes insanely long time especially because people are not familiar with English. The traditional Turkish market is called “bazaar” and we enjoyed shopping there especially when we learned how to bargain with the sellers. It was interesting to see the small shops overfilled with different stuff. We also noticed a “delivery” man who distributed tea to sellers in the stores.

We were surprised by the security check whenever we wanted to enter the mall. We had never seen anything like that but we could understand that was because of our safety. Furthermore we noticed they do not use price tags in their shop windows.

Housing First thing you notice when looking at a typical Turkish block of flats is that they keep water in a barrel on their roof! So there is usually from one up to 20 barrels on one roof. To see something like this in the Czech Republic would be unusual!

Turkish flats are much bigger than ours. A typical small Turkish flat has a living room, room for guests (dining room), room for kids and a bedroom (for parents). In our country, young couples usually live in small flats which means two or three rooms altogether. Besides the size, it is also different because of all the decorations they use.

Conclusion In the end we were so happy we could go. Even though sometimes we were exhausted or the whole situation was getting complicated, we truly enjoyed every minute of our “truly Turkish experience”. We enjoyed comparing the differences and seeing them with our own eyes. It was great to make so many new friends and have new memories. We do not think that any of us will ever forget this interesting trip. Thank you!

UNITED KINGDOM In June 2011, the participants explored Turkey. And they are happy to introduce reflections and observations of differences between the Czech Republic and England. There were four of students in our group (Kamila, Lukáš, Monika and Václav) and this is what we noticed was different. We hope you will enjoy reading as much as we enjoyed the whole “British” experience.

Transportation When you say “roads in England“, people from the continental European countries will look left and explain that the British drive on the left so the rest of the world has to be careful. However, it is not all that you can observe there. When we arrived to England, we were surprised because the way from the airport was our first experience with the British driving system. We saw strange signs which you cannot see in the Czech Republic: there were signs with lights and solar panels at the top of the signs (Why? We wondered. It is always rainy in Britain, at least this is what we hear at school.). Most of signs consisted of lights. In the Czech Republic we have simple signs so the British ones might seem a bit complicated without knowing a proper reason.

Another strange thing is the colored roads with words written on the surface. It looks as if you took a brush and drew arrows and lines. It also looks very untidy, informal and old. The outer lines are yellow or white and can be double. In big cities, there are special routes for bikes because a lot of people often ride a bike to work, shop and school. Sometimes, these are marked red. We also noticed that the pedestrian crossings are different than ours: there are not the thick white lines. The British pedestrian crossing is colored and indicates where you must look when you pass.

Driving on the left People going to England for the first time are recommended to drive on the left but it can be quite 37

Personally, to us it took some five days to adept to this rule and when back in the Czech Republic, we had a problem to get back to the standard… Driving on the left side can be found not only in the UK but also in Australia, south Africa, India, Indonesia, Japan or New Zealand. The only problem is that these countries are not frequently visited by us… So it is unnatural for us to see the driving wheel on the right side of the car… Dear Czechs, when getting on a British car, remember your guest seats or you will have to drive in the UK which would surely be a most dreadful experience ever!

Double-deckers A double-decker is a typical British red bus with two floors and stairs. Most doubledeckers are about 9.5 m and 11 m long. The old types of double-deckers must not be used any more.

Typical taxis The color of the cabs is black. To become a London taxi driver, you must study the street of London about four years. You must learn all of them as well as the rules and signs by heart.

Using bags with sand Strange thing which I don´t understand is the solution against wind for temporary road. In the Czech Republic we have simply solution for provisional signs with some concrete for weight. In England have some black bags with sand.

Underground The tube is the oldest underground railway in the world. The first section was opened in 1863. The underground consists of 270 stations and has 402 km of track. Every station has a special individual design. The tube is the second largest metro system in the world. There was an attack in the underground on 7th July 2005. A group of Islamist extremists attacked a number of transportation lines in London.

Horses in the streets In English streets we can meet a lot of policemen riding on horseback. There are so many of them and so special traffic signs were created. In the capital we can meet a lot of sentries, saluting soldiers, who protect the Queen and her family, keep guard of honor and pay tribute to the royal family.

Houses Most houses in the outskirts of the cities are very similar. Most of them are made of brick.

They have small front gardens and have two floors.

windows. Inside there are thick carpets in all rooms including the staircases.

We can find many ancient but well-preserved buildings in England. For example the spa in Bath that was built by the Romans. Such antique buildings are often made accessible for the public and the monuments are presented in an entertaining and interactive way to show the history to people of all ages.

Food Most dishes served in the UK have strikingly hot taste. You can find chilli in every meal, in any meat, any sauce or in cooked vegetables. Some restaurants mark dishes in their menu with 1 - 6 or provide a small picture of chilli peppers depending on the strength. But the rice is prepared completely salt-free and tasteless and you do not see boiled potatoes in restaurants.

Everything is very often fried and served with chips. You can also taste many kinds of Indian dishes today. The English people have adopted them as parts of their cuisine.

Stewing and spicing came probably from India.

The size of portions is different. The restaurant portions are mostly quite small but students at school canteens have a rich choice of meat, rice, chips, vegetable, salads, baked dishes and always some dessert follows.

English breakfast is very rich. It begins with a glass of orange juice. Then toasts, butter, jam, scrambled eggs, sausages, ham and bread come on the table. You can drink black tea, coffee and milk for breakfast. The British like orange juice and coffee with a small biscuit or gingerbread with sugar icing sometimes during the day.

Clothing The British are very tough as they heat their houses during winter only around 18 degrees Celsius. The eastern and southern coasts of the British Islands have got a mild and relatively warm climate but the inland is much colder. When we visited this nice and interesting country we often felt cold in spite of wearing winter jackets, scarves and caps. Our English friends, though, were wearing T-shirts and summer clothing. Most of them put on as similar fashionable things as we do… especially girls. Also, students have to wear school uniforms which differ according to the school. Students are very proud of their own schools and uniforms, too. These uniforms consist of light shirts, ties, classical pants for boys and light blouses, skirts and shoes for girls.

Nature When you say “English lawn”, you get an image of nice, fresh green, thick, cultivated lawn that exists in English parks and gardens only. You cannot compare our ones with English lawns because our climate is different. No wonder the British love to relax sitting on the grass of their parks. Groups of students in uniforms can be seen 40

The gardens around the houses are grown very carefully. The lawns are always cut, bushes formed to various perfectly sculpted shapes. Everybody wants to have his own garden better and nicer than his neighbor. Gardening is a widespread hobby.

British taps Very typical are the two water taps: one for hot and the other for cold water. We found it very complicated to wash, especially in the morning.

Most toilets we encountered on our trip to England were flushed with a lever that does not allow for an economical flush. Thus all the water in the tank was used during the flush which resulted not only in wasting the precious fluid, but also made it impossible to flush again within several minutes which was very inconvenient when more people needed to use the toilet quickly.

Another typical thing of the UK is a doorknob. In the middle of the doorknob there is the door lock.

Singing We noticed that girls in Great Britain have very pleasant voices but we were surprised that they all sing in a higher register when compared to the Turkish girls and other women that were there with us.

England is a very interesting, beautiful place as for historical sights, transport, nature and culture. We like the country and lifestyle. This is why we recommend a trip to England. The people are very nice and men are gentlemen. If somebody asks us if we want to go to the UK again, our answer will be YES. â˜ş

POLAND In March 2012 the last AFRE meeting took place, this time in Poland.

People

People in Poland are much kinder and nicer than in the Czech Republic. Despite this, they look very strict and cold when you enter a shop. They look very angry, do not ask you if they can help you, never smile and almost never speak. That was strange.

In the Czech Republic it is not much better but you are not afraid like in Polish shops. The shop assistant just says “Good morning, can I help you?” or “Here you are, thank you. Have a nice day…” Before visiting Poland, I had thought that it was not enough.

Then we went to the school. There were posters saying “Welcome in our school” everywhere and photographs from the partner countries were hanging in the halls. I really felt the warm welcome. And all the people’s behaviour proved me right. All students were incredibly kind. There were willing to help us with whatever we needed and did their best trying to make us enjoy our stay. Compared to schools at home, this is very sad. I think in our country such behaviour would be possible only if individuals were obligated to do so, not spontaneously so much.

I also did not notice any originality in Poland. People do not join any groups or styles as often as they do in the Czech Republic. Everyone was just going with the flow nobly stuck out.

Young people dress in a modern and sporty way and middle-aged ladies are very elegant. However, in the streets you do not see anyone with rasta or wearing crazy original clothes, which is normal in my homeland.

Also, teachers are very different. They are often young and also strict; they lead their classes with a firm hand.

Every single one of them was dressed very elegantly, women always wearing high heels and quite surprisingly walking with their purses everywhere. They always came to the class with perfect make-up. In the Czech Republic, every teacher has their own style and so s/he wears different clothes. However, nobody comes to the classroom with purse.

Next, the Polish head teacher: in our school, we have a really kind and willing head teacher, the Polish one was like our friend. She was asking you every day how we were, hugging us and nothing was a problem for her.

Also, young people in Poland are very polite. They have very good manners. They are not rebels like in the Czech Republic. Czech people are nice but in comparison with the Poles, it is something completely different. I have never met 42

You feel like in one big family. So, it is true what books say about the Polish: they look very strict but they are great people.

Architecture When I went to Poland I was very interested how different architecture can be in a neighbouring country. However, I must say that it was a little strange for me…

We arrived quite late to Warsaw. We moved to our hotel quickly and then hurried up to a dinner.

The next day we could do the sightseeing. But honestly, I must say that I did not like it there. I was a little bit disappointed. The previous evening was much more impressive for me. I was missing something like a city centre, full of people and their meeting points. We have this in the city I live in as there are places with lots of people in every hour of a day. I also found Warsaw a bit empty, maybe we could say “desolate”. I was also surprised that I could see no park or a place with lots of greenery and nice environment. There were only long, empty streets.

Of course, the biggest shock was the prefab houses. Certainly, we should not forget that Warsaw was bombed during the Second World War. It could have been really beautiful and historically important. But… There was an old building and next to it there was an old, ugly, grey, communist prefab. And it was surrounding the poor building from both sides. It was horrible.

The Royal Castle did not really look like a castle but inside it was beautiful. It was huge, big and the tour took a long time. And it was great experience. It was an official residence of the Polish monarchs. Between 1926 and 1939, it was a residence of the Polish president. Today it is a part of the National Museum. The castle was rebuilt by many rulers. During World War II it bombed by German army like the whole city. In 1944, it was damaged again

by Warsaw Uprising.

I also missed the centre in Gdynia where we spent most of the time of our visit.

Gdynia was not particularly interesting. The whole city was organized and the buildings were mostly made in the 20th century. However, there was one interesting place: the harbour, of course. The beach was absolutely dazzling with all the beautiful, velvety sand, pier, seagulls and swans everywhere. It was lovely.

It was really breath-taking. It was so beautiful. It looks like a good restoration but most of it (or at least the centre) was newly built. Yes, the centre: there I finally found the heart of the city with lots of people. Also, there were lovely small streets with narrow and high houses. In them, there were small stores or lovely coffee shops and in front of those houses stood stalls with amber. We also noticed a promenade with people and pigeons.

The St. Mary Roman Catholic church was founded in 1379 and completed in 1502. They say it is the largest brick church in the world and it used to be the biggest Evangelical Lutheran church in the world. It is 105,5 m long, and the nave is 66 m wide.

Inside the church there is room for 25 000 people. There were white walls, unbecoming and – sorry to say – kitsch décor. There were pieces of decoration of different styles and that all was creating the impression of kitsch. The ceiling and upper walls were empty, just white colour.

Except for this church, the city is really nice, well-preserved and tasteful. The best view is chiefly in small streets by the sea, where are coffee houses (and, of course, more stalls with amber) full of people just drinking and relaxing without shoes, getting sun tan…

Generally speaking we can say that Polish architecture is similar to ours. Trying to spot the most striking differences as for the design of Czech and Polish towns, this is what we found: In Poland, especially in the north, there are different Gothic works – brick Gothic which almost cannot be seen in our country and if so, only in connection with the Polish roots (Czech queen of Polish origin named Eliška Rejčka founded brick churches in old Brno and Hradec Králové; Polish influence can be also traced in Opava).

Poland had to put up with the consequences of World War II with more effort than our country; many cities lost its historical centres whereas Czech lands suffered almost no direct war damages. This is why – from the vantage point of intactness of our monuments – Czech country represents an exception in Central Europe. While the restoration of Warsaw as the capital started and was paid attention to systematically right after the end of World War II, other cities (such as Gdansk or Wroclaw) had to wait for their renewal for decades. In the design of these cities rules of 44

GUIDE AD FONTES RERUM EUROPAE from the Pupils´Point of View or Following the Cultural Footsteps of Middle Eastern Europe and the Cradle of Parliamentary Democracy preservation of monuments had to be applied, the foundations were better processed and the result makes a more authentic impression than in Warsaw. This is why we did not identify that the centre of Gdansk used to be as much destroyed as Warsaw! In Warsaw, we admired demanding work of renovators at the royal castle which was (as the last building in the centre) finished as late as 1980. Here again, the modern approaches in the preservation of monuments showed a great difference between the older and younger restorations of the damaged objects.

In Poland, like in our country, there is a double tradition in architecture: quality works of important foreign artists for the richest customers and traditional domestic hand-crafted products – and these two often meet in one building. The disputed Palace of Culture and Science by Soviet architect Rudnev also represents a building which did not follow in the original (and unfortunately non-preserved) street network nor in traditional Polish architecture and copied the skyscrapers of Stalinist Moscow.

In Poland, it is really quite difficult to say what “Polish architecture” is – many historical cities are not in Poland any more (Vilnius or Lvov) and many were not a part of the Polish state in various periods which influenced them a lot (for example the design of the historical city of Gdansk was more influenced by the other Hanseatic cities, eg. Lubeck, than Polish architecture of that time). The political separation of Poland into the Russian, Austrian and Prussian (German) manifested itself in the 19th century in the design of public buildings (railway stations, theatres, schools and hospitals) in individual claims and this triple a tradition remains an identifiable part of Polish towns.

Last but not least, we would like to share some funny differences between Czech and Polish language. For example, in my host family, one of us used a Czech word to describe a young boy. The word was “chytrý” (= intelligent) but caused embarrassment because in Polish it means “selfish”. And there are many more: when we say “čerstvý” (= fresh), in Polish it has the opposite meaning – old. And moreover a strawberry in Czech means a blueberry in Polish...

Food, nature and traffic Now it is time to tell you something about food, nature and traffic in Poland regarding our trip. First I should tell you about our travelling in Poland.

When we crossed the border, the scenery changed.

Everything around the train was dirty and dull; nice buildings surrounded by that environment. We were confused and surprised. We did not lose hope though and were looking forward our first lunch.

Our reward was magnificent! We were in KFC on lunch. Twisters, fries, coke and more divine delicacies! The dinner was excellent for me though other members of our group did not like it and claimed it was alive! So my advice was - eat fast until it eats your potatoes.

We had the other lunches and breakfasts with our families and I tasted a lot of Polish food most of which tasted the same as Czech food, such as chicken with potatoes or fish with potatoes. We also enjoyed dinners in restaurants because there were professional chefs.

In Warsaw, we were travelling by bus and train whereas in Gdynia we just went by public means of transport. It was very much like the system we are used to from our homeland.

Everything was great and we enjoyed it. We are looking forward to our next trip to Poland because there are nice places for beautiful holidays.

School The fourth day of our trip we planned to visit the school, meet students and participate in a dance workshop with all partner schools. Nobody knew that dance would be taught. We were surprised that they wanted to teach us polonaise because it is dance which every year inaugurates our balls. We went learn to dance polonaise. The workshop took place in a huge gym. Each guest had a Polish dance partner and even some teachers joined us. We enjoyed it very much.

The last dance of polonaise included all figures. Then we were divided into groups by our nationalities. Each of these groups took a Polish girl or boy who guided us through their school.

The school seemed to be very uninteresting and boring. The same inside. All the walls were white, only at some places there were photos from the students´ trips, diplomas of their school 46

However, the Polish head teacher surprised me as she stopped me and got acquainted with me, despite her workload.

Our Polish friends had taken us into classes and then we had a meeting in the gym. We all had gone to different classrooms. Trachet welcomed me in Polish language and we sat in the back of the classroom. Five minutes to end of the lesson, Julia (girl, which accommodated me) pulled out her exercise book and wrote the end of their subject matter. The whole time someone kept looking and smiling at me. When the lesson ended, everybody stood up and came to me. About twenty students got acquainted with me. And I kept repeating my name for them. All Julia’s classmates were very nice. I was surprised that they were interested in meeting someone older and moreover a foreigner. They were not shy, they were very active. They explained immediately where the toilet or gym are. Their English was not excellent but we always made ourselves understood.

The school was big, had a lot of classes, two gyms and in the basement there were big changing rooms. The Polish boy showed us the classrooms and lessons. The pupils sometimes asked us questions (where we were from and our names or age). Some classrooms

language classrooms or social sciences with contemporary furniture. We had a possibility to visit an empty classroom, too. It was biology classroom. At the back of it there was a cupboard with stuffed animals and next to that was a skeleton.

We also noticed that in classrooms there always hung a cross above the door.

Under the cross there was an orange light. Why? We did not know. Only after the end of the lesson did we learn that it was a signal that the lesson was over as the light switched on. No annoying bell!

The next difference were the uniforms worn by some of the students. However, we did not find out if they really must wear them or if it is just an option. They were blue with a white school logo. Most girls had T-shirts and boys wore waistcoats. Although it was a uniform, it did not look too formal.

In the whole school we could observe very good manners. Maybe they did 47

In the corridor during the break, students were very loud, but we did not see any conflict. Everybody behaved very well; they were considerate. In lessons, the students were silent. When they did not understand something, they asked the teacher about it immediately. And moreover, they did not chat during lessons, which is sometimes a bit different in our school. The students also waited for their teachers in the corridors before the lesson started. In every class there were about 15-20 students. I think it is an optimal number of students in one class.

Teachers usually wore elegant, fashionable clothes, just like all middleaged women in Poland. We did not see anybody in jeans. Only teachers of physical education had tracksuit trousers.

Our overall impression of the school was very good.

We also learnt that the Polish system of education is different from ours. Polish elementary school (szkoła podstawowa) lasts six years and children begin to attend school when they are seven years old. That is almost the same as in elementary schools (in the Czech Republic, elementary school education lasts nine years). Then children go to a “gimnazjum” three years, which is the same as a Czech elementary school.

“Szkoła ponadgimnazjalna” (secondary school) lasts three years and there are the following types: general education lyceum (liceum ogólnokształcące), which is the same as Czech grammar school; “liceum profilowane”, which is the same as a specialized Czech grammar school (usually computing or languages) or college (economic, business, fine arts); there is also “technikum”, which corresponds to Czech industrial schools; and apprentice training centre (zasadnicza szkoła zawodowa). Uczelnia wyższa – university/college.

Závěr …Mezinárodní projekt byl od svého počátku zamýšlen jako kreativní počin. Proto by si také každý z účastníků měl domyslet závěr vlastní; pamatovat si a přemýšlet o tom, co během konání projektu zažil…

Musíme nicméně říci, že jsme si všichni užili získávaní nových zkušeností a impulzů, díky nimž víme víc než před zahájením projektu – a jistě chceme vědět ještě víc.

Srdečné díky patří učitelům, kteří se starali o běh celého comeniovského projektu (především koordinátoři: Aleksandra Blalteberg, Mária Bujdos, Şebnem Haydargil, Andrew Jackson a Dagmar Vejchodová), ředitelům partnerských škol za podporu a rovněž studentům, pro něž jsme to vlastně všechno dělali.

Doufáme, že naše přátelství neskončí s tímto projektem.

Epilogue …The international project was meant to be creative since its very beginning. This is why each participant should think of his/her own epilogue themselves and remember their experiences gained within the duration of the project…

However, it is necessary to say that we all had a wonderful time full of new experiences and impulses that will push us forward knowing more than we had done before the project was launched.

Many heartfelt thanks have to be expressed to the teachers who looked after the international Comenius project (especially the coordinators: Aleksandra Blalteberg, Mária Bujdos, Şebnem Haydargil, Andrew Jackson and Dagmar Vejchodová), their head teachers for the support we got as well as the students for whom we all did it.

We hope our friendship will not end with the end of the project.
