From the Editor’s Desk Congratulations. If you’re reading this, you’ve survived the end of the Mayan Calendar. You’ve stowed away your tinfoil hat for another time, and instead, grabbed another: your plastic “Happy New Year” party hat. In the end, technology hadn’t marked the end of human kind (yet), but has alternatively signaled the beginning of a time in history when almost anything is possible. David Jolovitz, Editor

Just several years after the development of the internet, its greatest malady has been addressed: the impersonal has been made personal. With live face-to-face video streaming, instant messaging, and photo galleries with untold amounts of storage, we are, today, presented with an

intimidating amount of ways in which one can get — and stay — connected. Never before have the people we love or the things we like been so accessible — relatively speaking, of course. (Many of us seem to have forgotten how we ever got by before the dependency on Google searches or smart phone apps.) We are living in an amazing time; at the very crest of societal change. Technology is not a trend, but a life-changing movement. If last century’s was the Industrial Revolution, ours may very well be the Industrious Revolution. The internet is an amazing marketplace, social arena, and library of limitless volumes of information. Ours is a time in history that is ripe with potential. Let’s change the world for the better. Happy New Year to all and, “Good reading.”

From the General Manager As my iPhone beeped at me alerting me of a meeting starting in 20 minutes, my computer screen reminded me to update a program and at the same time the printer advised me the paper tray was empty and then the batteries in my wireless mouse needed to be replaced. All of the technology we use throughout the facilities at Corte Bella requires quite a bit of “maintenance” just to keep all the equipment working properly. We all know that as soon as you Lynda Erickson CAAM®, PCAM® purchase a new vehicle or a new Smartphone, it is obsolete as soon as you leave the showroom or walk out of the store looking at your new phone and it tells you to update your operating system before the door closes. We can now hold a “Smartphone” or an iPad in the palm of our hands and have a world of information in a few seconds. No longer do we need maps for roundtrips, the GPS in the vehicle or on the phone directs us to our destination. It is only until you know the best route that perhaps you can out-smart the GPS and arrive at your destination in a more direct route. In my career of “Community Management” I recall the days when we did not have the luxury of having your own computer at your

8 | CB Times | The Official Community Magazine of Corte Bella

desk and when we became a little more “technology savvy” the sharing of one computer made us feel extremely productive. Now, if your computer has “issues” one feels lost at not having a computer available right then and there. The good old days of having a “computer or server room” are long gone, we now have a small closet or storage area that holds a few pieces of equipment that holds more information than the computers of the past. At Corte Bella, we are able to advise the community of upcoming meetings, social events, important dates and other information within minutes of pressing the send button; in the past if I needed to advise the community of this information, a memo was drafted and it was either posted on a community bulletin board or a hard copy mailed to you. The gate openers have changed from being a bulky piece of plastic to a thin transponder that is applied to your windshield! The ID cards for the Spa/Fitness Center can be produced within seconds of taking your photograph! I can only imagine what the future will bring in the way of upgrades to the items we use on a daily basis. Even though technology is here to stay, it is still nice to meet and talk with staff and residents face-to-face! Despite all of the advantages technology offers us, it cannot replace the personal form of contact we require on an everyday basis. On behalf of the Corte Bella staff we wish you all the best in 2013! (I did not require the use of any software program to write that greeting!)

Letter from the President Dear Fellow Residents: On behalf of all, may I wish you a Happy New Year. May your 2013 year be filled with peace health and happiness for you and yours. And now for some news. As you may be aware, the Board recently approved a change to the HOA Organization that I would like to explain to you. By the time you read this we will have appointed Mr. Mark Everts as our new Facility Manger and he will start with Corte Bella on January 7, 2013.

Ray Valle, President When Del Webb designed our community, the organization included this position. With over 50 years of experience, the Del Webb Organization felt that this function would be best left with a professional. That is also the direction of our Mission Statement. A few years ago the Board eliminated the job in favor of additional maintenance employees. However, our beautiful facilities are beginning to age and require more constant care and upkeep. We have already experienced problems with the fountains, pool, roofs,

air conditioning, chemical storage and irrigation. This trend will continue as time marches on because it is a never-ending conflict with the heat and sun and time. In response to this, the Board voted to reinstate this position a few months ago. It will be Mark’s job to act proactively with preventive maintenance measures to ensure that Corte Bella remains the attractive place that you are proud to call home; a place that continually impresses as you drive through the gates and is truly the jewel of the west Valley. He will supervise the maintenance staff, identify the areas that need attention, assist in the sourcing of vendors and add another set of hands to the staff. And, he will work with, and add direction to, the volunteer Preventive Maintenance Committee. He comes to us from Flagstaff where he was the Plant Manager of a senior living community. Prior to that, he served as Maintenance Director for two school districts. Mark has experience in heating and air-conditioning, landscape maintenance, pest control contracted building repairs and budgeting, among other things. We believe his set of skills will be an invaluable addition to Corte Bella in our efforts to maintain the standards that you want and expect in this place we call home. Please join us in welcoming him to Corte Bella and his new assignment.

Cool Cars of Corte Bella Hell Hath No Fury Like A ‘65 Plymouth Sport Fury David Jolovitz

when I first pulled the carpeting up,” Gary said. “That’s how badly it was rusted through.”

Shortly after being drafted into the United States Army in 1969, Corte Bella resident Gary Keller parked his ‘65 Plymouth Sport Fury in his father’s North Dakota driveway and tossed him the keys for safekeeping. Two years later, when Gary returned home from serving his country, his beloved muscle car was gone.

A good deal of work was put in by Gary to breathe new life into the car, including a complete engine and transmission overhaul, new frontend, brakes, driveshaft, top and a complete re-upholstering of the interior along with a re-chroming and a re-padding of the dash.

“He sold it,” Gary chuckles today. “He said he needed the money for a truck, and I wasn’t around to drive it.”

“The car has no oil leaks,” Gary smiles. “When any car makes it to 47 years old, I just believe that you owe the car something.”

The rare 2-door convertible was gone, but the effect the car had on Gary lingered.

When Gary moved to Corte Bella from Omaha two-and-half years ago, the ’65 Plymouth wasn’t too far behind. “I have everything I want at Corte Bella: a nice gated community, a golf course and good neighbors.”

In 1990, Gary tracked down another ’65 Plymouth Sport Fury — considered a rare car because only 6,272 convertibles were produced that year and it, too, served as the Indianapolis 500 Pace Car. Under the hood was the same 330-horse 383-cubic inch engine that helped define the car’s original personality. Although its exterior had been kept in relatively pristine condition over the years, its cabin was in need a major overhaul. “You could have dropped a watermelon through the floorboard

Gary hasn’t labored to preserve just a rare muscle car, but nostalgia. “My daughter Laura, who’s currently enrolled in graduate school at ASU, is always asking about the car. She thinks it might be hers someday.” Gary smiles and clutches his keys firmly.

COMMUNITY

Wedding Wows, Wedding Vows Karen Laughlin Selecting the Anacapa Restaurant as the location to host our wedding was an easy decision for us; the experience Fred orchestrated for our special day was unparalleled. Initially, we wanted a dream destination wedding and when that dream became a logistical challenge, we both agreed: Corte Bella would be a picture-perfect backdrop for a blissful marriage. I have been a resident—homeowner in the community since 2004. Over the years, I have enjoyed many happy hours, bocce ball matches, parlor games and golf outings in our community. The best part of living in Corte Bella has been the relationships established with neighbors who are now life-long friends. When I met Donnie in the summer of 2010, he immediately fell in love with the community and the many residents he met. The moment we confirmed our wedding date with Fred Hernandez, the Food & Catering Manager, Fred began providing suggestions and solutions that exceeded our expectations. Fred, the Anacapa staff and vendors provided extraordinary service to us; accommodating multiple planning meetings, our request for international wines, a delectable menu and pre- and post-event storage for the celebration decorations.

The happy couple. It was a perfect Arizona fall day at romantic Corte Bella with 30 family members and close friends in attendance for the sunset ceremony. We tied the knot in front of the breezeway fountain surrounded by the Tuscan urns, blue and tan flowers with green trees decorating the open patio. The wedding reception and dinner was mesmerizing with many of our guest commenting that this was the best wedding meal they’ve ever eaten! The beautiful Anacapa Restaurant was elegantly decorated for the wedding by Jean Gwyn of Table of Content event planning. David Bell Photography captured the love, joy and blending of the new family. Rob & Paula Schwarz provided the music to celebrate the new couple’s marriage.

A picture-perfect backdrop for a Karen and Donnie’s wedding.

The sunset and mountain views, old world architecture and the romantic grace and charm of the Mediterranean Villa of the Anacapa Restaurant created the dream wedding we desired and memories that will be cherished for our lifetime.

Ask Agnes: Shopping Motto I actually carry a laminated card in my wallet with my shopping ‘rules’. Why? Because I choose to eliminate clutter from my home. Less is more. I tried to imagine my survivors dealing with my lifetime of accumulations and realized what a chore that would be. It’s a great theory, but how does someone adopt practical advice? Here’s what I think about before I buy. Do I REALLY need that? Or, is it just an improved version of something I already own? Do I NEED extra bells and whistles? Is this just a single-purpose item [think bun warmer]? Is this there something I already have that can do the same thing? Watch out for “freebies”. They have to go somewhere and you have to deal with them later. Do you want to dust/maintain it? When something new comes into your home, you should remove something old. Zero growth! Get a new clothing item? Give one or two old ones to a charity. New dishes? Take the old ones to Goodwill. If it’s a larger item, there are many consignment shops around the valley. Like something in a catalogue? Mark it. Put it aside and wait. Generally the impulse goes away. [Why do you think they send catalogues so frequently?] Warehouse shopping: make a list and stick to it! Who of us hasn’t gone to Costco or Sam’s Club and spent $100 while going in to get a single item??? And bulk buying is not a good deal if you get tired of the product before it’s all gone. I still can’t think about eating marinated artichoke hearts! Enjoy looking! Shopping is fun—it’s the buying that kills you

CB VOLUNTEERS

The Warmth of the Season Janice Aiken, CB Volunteers The unseasonably warm temperatures on December 1, 2012 might have contributed to the success of the night’s Salvation Army drive… or perhaps the Corte Bella residents were simply eager to participate in the gaiety of the “lighting up” of the extravagant outdoor holiday decorations — those put up by the San Ramon Stringers. “It was perhaps the largest number of visitors we have ever experienced,” said Sam Himes, resident and enthusiastic stringer of lights. Their exploits just recently featured in December’s Times, these Corte Bella residents have strung what looks to be miles of holiday lights — and erected countless displays that include Nativities, snowmen, gingerbread houses, candy canes, reindeer and a Harley-riding Santa — for the past 7 seasons! Over 40 homes were illuminated, and when one takes a stroll down the street, you can literally feel it… “making spirits bright.” That night, friends and neighbors gathered casually in driveways and garages, enjoying holiday treats and musical entertainment provided by The Salvation Army. The volunteer musicians included, Liz Clitheroe, Joyce Stevenson, Derek Strickland and

Andrew Hill. The Red Kettle was manned by Corte Bella resident, Salvation Army volunteer, and bell-ringer extraordinaire, Michael Short. “We wanted to provide the opportunity for our visitors to make a donation to help those who less fortunate. Last year the Red Kettle donation was around $800. This year, the amount was almost tripled, to a total of $2,370.00,” Himes said. “One of the visitors told me she specifically came to donate to the Salvation Army at our San Ramon Red-Kettle site because Corte Bella residents had purchased her made-from-rags craft items and she wanted to give back,” said Himes. Residents also made very generous donations of toys, food items and basic necessities by selecting a needy family’s “Santa’s Wish List” from the Salvation Army Angle Tree that was on display throughout the early part of December in the Fitness Center lobby. The holidays will now shine brighter and warmer for many needy families due to the generosity of the Corte Bella community. Our thanks go out to the San Ramon Stringers for their hard labors and their huge hearts.

Tree Lighting at Anacapa Restaurant Janice Aiken, CB Volunteers The annual tree lighting event at the Anacapa Restaurant gets bigger and better every year. On November 28, over 200 residents gathered to celebrate beginning of the holiday season. They came to enjoy camaraderie with friends and neighbors, a fine food buffet and to toast each other with holiday cheer… (from the new wine menu at the Anacapa!). The tree, and all of its ornaments, ever resplendent, was donated to the HOA in 2008 as a gift from Corte Bella residents, John and Roz Belliveau. In prior years, John and Roz erected the 15foot tree, with over 4,000 lights and 1,700 ornaments on their property in North Carolina and then hosted a large outdoor party that benefited local families and charities. “The tree is Roz’s pride and joy, but my favorite part of the display is Santa’s electric train,” said John. Roz knew that the tree, which fits into three enormous boxes was just had to find a new home, and that it would take an army of elves to erect it. CB Volunteers to the rescue! Under the direction of chairperson Roberta Rials, as many as 10 residents, most of whom will “still” climb a ladder, completed the project in just over 8 hours. The result was a beautiful one.

Reservations for the lighting ceremony and dinner buffet have been a sold out every year since its inception; it has been a much-anticipated event that helps kick off the holiday season. Our congratulations go out to Chef Dan and Fred Hernandez for another quality dining experience. Adding to the fun, the CB Chorus comes-a-caroling and always adds giggles, jollies and some follies to the event by singing our holiday favorite tunes — with a twist. The Chorus, led by Kay Steik, is conducted by Gary Cravens and accompanied by pianist Mary van Maanen. Special kudos to those who helped erect the tree: Mary Ann Bradley, Sandra Solomon, Peg Pozdol, Roberta Rials, Gloria Dill, Denise Jacobs, and Robin Mandell And to the performers of the CB Chorus: Gary Cravens (director), Mary Van Maanen (pianist), Kay Steik, Celeste Nelson, Georgina Novakowski, Regina Shanney-Saborsky, Hilda Furkert, Jan Afbahl, Jim Dowen, Darlene Dowen, Max Hinerman, Pat Healy, Loretta Sawyer, Rick Beaudoin

CULINARY

From the Chef

Greetings from the Anacapa Restaurant. In the spirit of the issue’s theme, Technology, we have a myriad of different tools and gadgets in the kitchen that help us through the day. Some of these items are also useful around the house and home. I want to share a few of these with you and give some examples of how and what to use them for.

Executive Chef Dan Haywood, Anacapa Restaurant The Mandolin – A wonderful cutting tool for slicing and making long thin strips of vegetables. Comes with multiple blades and is adjustable for thick slices of cucumber for dipping, or the thinnest potato slices for homemade potato chips. Makes big projects like entertaining easy, as you can slice large amounts of vegetables, fruit or other items quickly and easily with minimal cleanup. You can find lots of different mandolins in kitchen specialty shops. The Chef’s Knife – Don’t be fooled, all knives are not equal. There is a huge difference in having a professional chef’s knife and the one you find hanging for 7.99 at Kmart. When they say they never need sharpening. I think not. The type of steel used

in them is very thin and cheap, making them flexible (not good), and easily dulled. You also don’t have to break the bank either to get a good knife. You could spend up to $100 on one, but there are many in the $20 – $35 ranges that are just as good. An 8-inch chef’s knife (the size of the Blade) is plenty big for most household needs. Forschner is a great brand. They hold an edge well, the maker has been around for years, and they last forever (I have one that is at least 20 years old I still use). Just make sure to pick up a simple sharpening tool and use it often. This brand can be found on-line and in most department stores and kitchen shops. The Zester – A little tool used for taking the flavorful rind off citrus fruit in little strips. Use them for a beverage, chopped over ice cream, or baked in your favorite dessert. Also garnishes other vegetables like carrots and cucumbers for a different look. Found in just about every kitchen shop and more than likely in a garnishing kit. These are some of my favorites that are indispensable for me in the kitchen. Happy eating.

Five Onion Soup • • • • • • •

4 lb. Julienne Yellow Onions 2 lb. Pan Red Onions Julienne 1 ½ lb. Shallots Julienne 2 lb. Leeks Julienne 10# ½ cup Garlic, Chopped

• •

3 cups Sherry 2 cups Chopped Garlic

3 cups Red Wine 1 ½ cups Balsamic Vinegar

1 Gallon Chicken Stock or Chicken Broth (not bouillon) 1/2 Gallons Beef Stock or Broth Reduced 2 oz Worcestershire Sauce or to taste. Salt and Pepper to taste

Method: In a large sauté pan, or several, caramelize the onions, shallots until a solid golden brown. Add leeks and garlic and sauté briefly. Add balsamic, sherry and wine and reduce to ¼ volume. Add stocks and simmer for about 30 minutes, reducing slightly (using boullion runs risk of being too salty). Season to taste. Evenly distribute the onions between holding containers when putting the soup away. Should make about should make 1½ - 2 gallons. Can be frozen in batches.

To serve, cut circular rounds of rye bread with cutter, and bake until crisp. Put the crouton on top of hot onion soup in an oven safe bowl. Place a slice or two of cheddar cheese on top of crouton and bake either in oven or under a brazier until melted and bubbly. (Placing bowls on baking pan or oven safe plate helps you to pull soups out of the oven easily and prevents the cheese and soup from bubbling over and dripping in oven.)

HEALTH & FITNESS

Pickleball News John Friesner As the new Corte Bella Pickleball Club moves into 2013, we reflect on all of the fun we had in our first few months as an organized club. Our member play times in the morning on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays have been well attended. We have conducted two “new player” clinics for more than 30 residents that wanted to learn the game and more than 40 members and non-members enjoyed our potluck social and membership drive in November. And, we initiated ladder play for those that want to be able to measure their improvement. In January, we are set with a great schedule of events: two more “new player” clinics, member play with the Arizona Traditions and Trilogy pickleball clubs on the 8th and 22nd and regular open play for members four days a week. In addition, our second potluck member social will be held on January 26th at 9 AM.

Never watched or played the game before? Come on by on any of the above dates and talk with any of our members. All residents have an open invitation to join us anytime at the courts to learn about this great game. The Corte Bella website is a great source for club activities and the bulletin board by the courts has signup sheets for court time, club announcements and membership applications. Should anyone be interested in becoming a member or have any questions, suggestions or comments, please send an email to cortebellapickleballclub@outlook.com or contact any of the Board members. See you at the courts.

Tennis Tips Aide’ Smedes, Tennis Pro Corte Bella is home to many avid tennis players and… the perfect playing weather — so get ready, get set, and bounce back after the holidays! Four tips for a safe return to the game of tennis after some time off… • “Listen to your body” Few people have had to listen to as many parts of their body as some of the professional players. Don’t push through pain. You might want to rush back, but you could just be extending your time away. There will be plenty of time to play once you are healed. • “Approach each match like you can win” It is important that you walk on the court with a clear objective of winning, not just playing well, or making a good showing against a supposedly superior opponent. Only with that belief and goal will you do the things you need to do to win. • “Readjust your goals but don’t lower expectations” Take a balanced mental approach to your comeback. Don’t beat yourself up for being rusty, but don’t let yourself off the hook either. Be satisfied with whatever happens that day. • “If you love something, keep going until you can’t do it anymore” If you love playing the sport, don’t stop trying to do it to the best of your abilities and do it until you can’t do it anymore. Come and join your friends and neighbors for a cardio class, the all-new Tennis Enchilada workshop for beginners, or a private/ group lesson. For more information, call Aide’ Smedes at (623) 399-7022, or e-mail her at aide.smedes@yahoo.com.

2012 MGA Ryder Cup Recap This year, after three great days of golf, the annual Ryder Cup ended in success. The course was in great shape and the weather, from the moment the first participant teed off, remained cooperative and relatively perfect. By all accounts, everyone had a great time. After the first two days of team play, the Blue Team, with Captain Barry Hoyt and his assistant Rich Tamburo, were 7½ points up. The third day of play saw headto-head individual match play, with the Red Team, as led by Arnie Raver and his assistant Ira Gedan, making a valiant effort by winning half of their matches. However, that was not enough to overcome the Blue Team’s lead and the Blue Team held on for the win. Congratulations to the Blue team for bringing home the trophy, and to the Red Team for a tremendous effort.

CB’s WGA Represented in Tournament The 2012 AWGA State Medallion Club Team Tournament was held on December 3, 2012. Over 250 entrants from clubs all over the state of Arizona participated in this event at Oakwood and Ironwood golf clubs in Chandler and Sun Lakes, AZ. Corte Bella Golf Club was represented by Women’s Golf Association (WGA) members Anne Hammel, Janet Biehl, Barbara Welsh and Susie Biggs. These entrants were invited to attend after winning low gross and low net qualifying State Medallion Tournaments held earlier in the year. The Times would like to congratulate Anne and Janet, who placed sixth overall.

A Very Merry Christmas Home! Robin Mandell Get a few ladies from Corte Bella’s Smiling OUt Loud (SOUL) together, and you are bound to have a stylish, exciting event! That is exactly what happened on Saturday, December 1, when members of our neighborhood ladies’ philanthropic organization hosted a fabulous Christmas holiday dream home. Through the very generous donation of the use of their lovely home, Mary and Ralph Laurie allowed multitudes of busy bee women and men to transform their place into a winter wonderland. Every space of their Figueroa model was decorated by a separate team of workers who put untold hours of effort into creating unique and festive spaces. Each area had a different theme: the entrance, children’s corner, living room, dining room, kitchen, bar, den, powder room, laundry room, guest room, master suite, and front and back yards. All of this effort raised about $2,800 for SOUL’s primary beneficiary charity, Eve’s Place – a West Valley sanctuary for battered persons and their children. Congratulations – and many thanks to all who helped make this event a huge success.
