the
General Manager’s Corner
This is the most wonderful time of the year. I’m glad the hot summer days are finally behind us. I would like to welcome all the part-time residents back to Arizona and Corte Bella. I look forward to seeing you all again. The holidays are right around the corner and there is nothing better than family, laughter, joy, and of course all the yummy food.
I want to provide you with some reminders and updates on what is happening within your community.
• All dogs must be always leashed while out in the community. This includes during Yappy Hour.
• We still have residents who ride their bicycles on the sidewalk. This is so dangerous, and someone is going to get hurt. Please walk your bike while on the sidewalk.
• Golf carts are motorized vehicles and should be treated as such. Please obey all laws which include the stop signs, speed limits, and please do not allow children to operate a golf cart.
The Anacapa remodel is moving along, and I look forward to the day when the community can enjoy all the hard work put into this remodel. This is going to be a great upgrade to the community.
Management has been holding down the fort, so to speak, while we have been in transition between board members. The operations of the community are, and always will be, our 1st and most important priority to the owners of the Corte Bella Community. FirstService and I look forward to a continued partnership with the newly elected board members.
• Please remember to complete your HOPA form and return it to HOA office or email it to leann.blue@fsresidetial.com or to haoreceptionist@cortebellacca.com.If you do not have a form please contact us at the email addresses above.
Have a wonderful November. Cherish your life, your health, your family, and friends. These are the things that money can’t buy and are what define your true wealth.
From the Editor’s Desk
The weather is great now and the best of Arizona is what we wake up to each day. The desert rewards us yearly after pushing us to the brink at times during the summer. November also means the year’s end is just one month away. And this month brings a favorite holiday of mine –
Thanksgiving Day. To gather with friends and family to celebrate all the blessings in our lives is such a wonderful experience. The great food that is part of this holiday, and the sharing of it with those who are important to us, is a very special moment in time. May your holiday be memorable. Corte Bella is a wonderful place – I still say this after living here for almost 17 years. I’m thankful for my community. Happy Thanksgiving.

HOA Finance Committee Update
Finance Committee Chair, Jesse YoungWho are the members of the Corte Bella Finance Committee? The committee members are Tom Cerny, Secretary; Peter Diamond; Alison McGonagle; Jack Serino; Ron Tchorzewski, Vice-chair; and Jesse D. Young, Chair.
What does the Corte Bella Finance Committee do? The best way to summarize our obligations is to think of the committee as a partner to the Board and the General Manager. While some residents may be seasonal, community business is conducted year-round.
Major tasks of the CB Finance Committee:
• Support the operations of the Corte Bella Country Club Association.
• Advise the Board of Directors on all financial matters.
• Review the association’s monthly financials.
• Manage investments of all “Reserve and Operating Funds”.
• Prepare a quarterly investment report.
• Review and provide input into preparation of the annual budget.
• Review and comment on the Annual Audit.
• Review and provide input on Reserve Study updates.
• Provide support to Corte Bella association committees.
• Meet monthly and as needed.
Our current emphasis is to provide continuity during the transition of five new Board members, complete the 2023 budgeting process, and finalize evaluation of Management Company RFPs (request for proposal) with recommendations to the Board so the Board can make its decision as to who the Management Company will be going forward.
Scams – How Not To Be A Victim!
Are you aware of the number of scams that are perpetrated on seniors on a regular basis? It is mind-boggling to say the least. As I was looking online for information about scams, the information was endless.
I chose three sites that gave good information on what scams are popular right now, and they provided valuable information that was easy to understand.
In 2022 the top 10 scams are as follows:
• Debt Collection
• Fake Government Officials
• Identify Theft, Phishing and Pharming
• Phone Scams
• Loan Scams
• Fake Prizes, sweepstakes, free gifts, the lottery
• Internet merchandising
• Automobile related complaints (warranty and extended warranty)
• Credit Bureau and related credit scores.
• Phishing/Spoofing Emails
1) www.consumerfraudreporting.org
Learn more about the above scams at the following website:
2) www.usa.gov/scamsandfrauds
In addition to listing current scams, they give information on how to protect yourself, and the do’s and don’ts you should consider and how to report scams.
3) www.azag.gov/seniors/ consumerscams
On this site, they have a Senior Tool Kit. It is compiled by the Arizona Attorney General’s office. It’s 40 pages of information describing scams, identity theft, counterfeit check fraud, ATM fraud, Credit Card Fraud, Health Care fraud or Health Insurance fraud. In addition, they have information on caring for aging loved ones, elder abuse, and the taskforce against senior abuse (TASA). Also, there are the Top 10 consumer tips and how to protect yourself from fraud. Included are resource lists from Arizona Agencies and Organizations, U.S. Government Agencies, and Credit Reporting Agencies.
Take time to check out these websites. Remember you are only a victim if you let yourself be one.

During the past few months, the Corte Bella Vets provided financial assistance to two veterans. One veteran had two heart attacks and was unable to work, which caused him to fall behind on his rent. Another combat veteran also fell behind on his rent due to an automobile accident. Additionally, we provided $500 in Fry’s Gift Cards ($25 increments) to the Southwest Valley VA Clinic in Surprise. These cards are provided to assist veterans in need with the purchase of food and or gas. None of this assistance could have been provided to our veterans if it were not for your generosity and support. Thank You!
Don’t forget about our Angel Tree Program for Veterans. Trees will go up at the Sundome Plaza on November 1, 2022. For further information please contact Jim Starkman at (708) 638-2321.
Corte Bella Friends of Italy 14th Season
Information
Corte Bella Christmas Spirit
The San Ramon Stringers invite you and your guests to join us for the 14th annual Walk-About-Night. Over the past years, this event has become a beloved tradition in Corte Bella. Residents and their guests have come to look forward to the event as the true beginning of the Christmas season.
Walk-About-Night began in 2009. The Salvation Army Red Kettle was added two years later. That year we raised $1,500. The following year, it doubled! This continued thru last year (2021) which totaled over $25,000! What started with just a few strings of lights on a few houses has expanded to nearly 50 houses on surrounding streets to include thousands of strings of lights and animated decorations. Many hours of effort, a lot of expense, tons of laughter, and fun have made this activity a “one-of-akind” event. The contribution of time and effort by local residents is rewarded by the generous donation in the Red Kettles. This event is a major contribution to the efforts of the Salvation Army in this area. Corte Bella residents have made it known that we are
a caring community who are willing to help others and spread the true meaning of Christmas.
Please plan to come by Friday, December 2nd and see this amazing display of seasonal decorations. Notice the colorful arch at the entrance, the Nativity scene, the Red Kettle, the colorful mailboxes and the red rope lights outlining the street. Santa and his Elf helper always make an appearance in their special sleigh.
Note: Residents ask that you do not park in front of any decorated houses and that you do not permit dogs to “water” the Christmas decorations. For safety, children also should be kept out of the private yards as many decorations include support wires that are very difficult to see at night.
Where Does the Red Kettle Money Go?
The Salvation Army is the largest charity in the world. A remarkable 87% of all contributions go to help people in need. Only 13% of your donations go to administration costs. Compare this to other charities where 50% to 85% of the donations go to admin expenses. This makes the Salvation Army one of the charities doing the most good!
The following goods and services have been provided to local people in need by the local chapter of the Salvation Army.
• Food Boxes to 3,835 families
• People assisted with rent or utilities – 166 (average $500 each)
• Meals served – 12,848; showers to homeless – 198
• Youth at day care – 65; youth to Salvation Army camps – 74; to various youth groups - 46
• Christmas gifts to children – 2,919 (Christmas Angel Tree)
• Hygiene kits to homeless – 15,922; clothing assistance – 82
• Water bottles – 15,914
• Lives touched – 64,895
To Corte Bella residents: This year the need is even greater with many people struggling to make it through tough times.
Corte Bella activities that generate contributions have become the mainstay of our community services. The generosity of Corte Bella residents is very much appreciated by the people we help and by the Salvation Army. Each year, at Christmas, we look to Corte Bella and the Red Kettle donations to help fund our needs. Remember that 100% of the donations in the red kettles are used to fund our services, so all your donations are returned to our community. Your contributions make a difference. When you see our volunteers ringing the bells at local businesses or on your streets, know that your donation is appreciated and will go a long way to assist someone less fortunate. Thank you very much. I hope you all have a Merry Christmas.
Like A Good Neighbor, SOuL Is There
Just down El Mirage Road and across Bell, is the Thompson Ranch Elementary School (TRES) – almost 800 children from the surrounding neighborhood comprise the student body. Many of those students are from low income families or their families are struggling with other issues that impact their daily lives.
SOuL has been active for a number of years working to improve the experience of the students at TRES. This year, SOuL will once again help to provide member donated candy for the school’s Haunted Halls to be held at the school on October 28th. Additionally, SOuL is collecting closed-toe sport shoes for the school’s helping hands closet (many of the students do not have adequate footwear to get them through the winter). These children are our neighbors and SOuL understands the importance of helping our own. Thank you to the generous members of SOuL – you are examples of the best of Corte Bella!
Energy Balance and Weight Control
Our bodies need energy to function and energy balance is key to weight control. There are several categories of energy requirements, including:
• Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) refers to the energy that our bodies use while at rest.
• Thermic Effect of Feeding (TEF) is the energy used for digestion, absorption and assimilation of food.
• Exercise Activity (EA) refers to the energy we expend through purposeful exercise.
• Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT) is the energy used for daily activities (housework, gardening, grocery shopping, moving at home or at work).
Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is the total energy we require and is represented in the formula: TDEE = RMR + TEF + EA + NEAT. Our bodies produce this needed energy by converting the potential energy in the foods we eat. This energy is measured in Calories. There are several on-line calculators you can use to estimate your daily calorie needs by doing an internet search for “calorie calculator”. A certified personal trainer or a nutritionist can also help determine daily calorie needs
Energy balance refers to the relationship between the calories that we take in from food we eat and the energy that we expend.
If we take in the same amount of calories that we use, we are in energy balance and our weight is maintained. If we consume more calories than we use, there is an energy imbalance and we gain weight. If we use more calories than we take in, there is an energy imbalance and we will lose weight. A good rule of thumb for healthy weight loss is to estimate your TDEE and then subtract 500 calories per day. Over a week this would be equivalent to a deficit of 3,500 calories per week, which equates to one pound of weight loss per week. Calorie counting is not an exact science because our bodies may absorb and utilize energy differently. If you find that you’re not getting the anticipated results, just adjust your calorie intake by about 100-200 calories and monitor the results. When you reach your goal weight, adjust your calorie consumption to equal your TDEE to return to energy balance for maintenance. Remember to strive for a healthy split of macro nutrients (protein, carbohydrates, and fats). Each gram of protein and carbs contain 4 calories, and one gram of fat contains 9 calories.
Calorie counting can be tedious but there are many phone apps that make this easy, such as MyFitnessPal and MyMacros. You may find that after several weeks you become adept at estimating calories and have learned to control your food portions. This is what we should strive to achieve. Check with your doctor for guidance on what type of nutrition is right for you considering your individual health needs.

What Is Your Healthspan?
Dr. Tanya Carroccio, DNPWe’ve all heard of “lifespan,” or the amount of time one lives from birth to death. But most haven’t heard about healthspan. This is the time in a person’s life spent in good health, without decline from chronic illness, suffering from disability of symptoms, or aging. Most of my client’s will say they are in “pretty good health.” However, when we start deep diving, many are on two or more medications or suffer from aches and pains, gastrointestinal issues, or have some chronic illness and ongoing symptoms. How did we decide that this is considered good health?
My conventional medicine colleagues will often tell patients that their symptoms are “just a part of getting older” and they should expect continued decline. Not true! Most people think that a prescription to help alleviate symptoms is a type of cure, without ever getting to the root-cause of the problem.
We can improve our healthspan at any age. We can slow or even reverse aging by eliminating aging accelerators, such as:
Negative Attitude, as people who are negative often are sicker that those with a more positive outlook. Smoking and/or excessive alcohol use causes damage to our mitochondria, the powerhouse of all our cells.
Processed foods/fast foods/excessive dairy and sugar are like poison to our cells, causing inflammation and rapid aging and chronic disease. Lacking whole, organic foods in our diet reduces the number of good bacteria in your gut, which regulates overall health. Being too heavy or too thin are both signs of chronic inflammation and disease.
Lack of exercise increases mortality and chronic disease. Chronic stress causes increased insulin resistance and accelerated aging.
More than two prescription meds daily accelerates aging by chemically restructuring our cells.
By incorporating a functional medicine practitioner, you can identify areas of improvement to reduce chronic disease, pharmaceuticals, and improve overall healthspan. Functional medicine practitioners are experts at root-cause medicine and whole-body health.

CB Wine Tasting Group
Jeanie and Jesse YoungIn October, the CB Wine Tasting Group held two events for its two sub-groups A and B. The first event was hosted by Jan and Greg Still. Jan began by reminding us of the incredible variety of climates across Washington State resulting in unique AVAs (American Viticultural Areas) and then walked us through several of her favorite Washington wineries. The second wine tasting was a treat from Judy and Roger Strand. This was a trip to New Zealand, and while a very small country, it offers ten wine regions. We learned about the regions and tasted a sampling of reds and whites.
Next to an enjoyable social event, our group strives to pick up a little wine knowledge at each outing. The two sub-groups meet
on the 2nd Saturday of each month from 5:30 PM until 9:00 PM in a host’s home, rotating across all members. The host creates the theme, purchases the wine, and shares information on their theme, for example, the region, the varietals, etc. Wine glasses and nametags are provided. Attending members simply notify the organizer of their attendance and bring an appetizer and $15 per person to the event. The group’s leaders maintain the registry, send out invitations, and assist the host where needed.
If you are new to Corte Bella, or just ready for some fun, give us a call or send us an email. We are putting a new sub-group C together, so your timing would be great. Contact us at 303-748-9897 or jessedyoung23@gmail.com

Mary BlomeJoin the 264 members of The Corte Bella Pickleball Club as we play one of the fastest growing sports in America. Pickleball – its fun, social, and friendly. The rules are simple and the game is easy to learn, but can develop into a fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players.
Club Play
• Member Play for December is Monday and Saturday from 9:00 AM to 12 Noon.
• Men’s Novice Group plays Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon.
• Womens Play is Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 AM to 12 Noon.
• Women’s ladders are Wednesdays at 11:00 AM.
• Men’s ladders are Thursdays at 11:00 AM.
• Night Play – many members play on Tuesday and Thursday evenings to accommodate for those who work.
2. It’s Been Around for 57 Years. Pickleball was invented in 1965.
3. It all started with three men, a few bored kids and a dream: Pickleball was first invented by three dads up in Washington state. They created the game as a solution to their children’s boredom during the summertime.
4. The Evolution of the Pickleball Paddle: Pickleball paddles were made entirely of wood. However in recent years, lightweight materials like graphite and aluminum have been incorporated to lessen the weight of the paddle. A pickleball paddle is larger than a ping-pong paddle, but smaller than a tennis racket.
5. Not Your Average Ball: Pickleball balls have holes (similar to the holes found in Wiffle balls).
6. Slower Than a Speeding Bullet: Due to the aerodynamics of the pickleball ball, (thanks to its large holes), a pickleball ball travels approximately 1/3 the speed of a tennis ball.
Beginner Clinics
If you wish to learn how to play the game, and are not a current member of the Corte Bella Pickleball Club, you’re welcome to attend a Clinic. We hold the clinic once a month from October to April. If interested, let Eileen Mateyka know via email emateyka@icloud.com. The next clinic will be Sunday December 11th from 12:00 Noon to 2:00 PM.
Future Clinics:

1. Pickleball is One of the Most Popular Sports in the Country. Pickleball is played all over the world. The USAPA (United States American Pickleball Association) recently estimated that over 400,000 people actively play this addictive game on a regular basis.
7. The Best Picklers Are Never “Pickled”. Players are referred to as “Picklers”, and those who have lost did not “lose”, they were “Pickled”.
8. When in Doubt, Stay Out of The Kitchen. The 7-foot nonvolley zone directly in front of the pickleball court’s net is called “The Kitchen”.
9. That’s a “Dink” Shot. The term “dink shot” is used when a soft shot narrowly arcs over the pickleball net and lands in the Kitchen (the non-volley zone).
10. The True “Pickle” Behind Pickleball: Pickleball was named after a pet of one of the inventors, Congressman Joel Prichard, whose dog was named Pickles.

Corte Bella Tennis ClubSelection Complete, Competition Begins
The 6th Annual Corte Bella “Davis Cup” tournament selection process took place in September amongst countertops full of savory and sweet treats provided by the membership.
The surrogate captains (Brad Davidson and Dave Culley) made their selections ensuring an evenly matched team showdown for the October 15th match to be followed by a luncheon.
Meanwhile, the Northwest Valley Ladies League is underway with our 4.0 and 3.5 teams either visiting other 55+ communities or hosting players here at Corte Bella. The men’s league is experiencing a change of leadership, but once it’s again established, we will inform the community. Our Monday, Wednesday, Friday drop-in tennis is moving its start times to later times and will be posting them on the bulletin board.
We welcome new participants to join us to play, hit, or rediscover the game in the free clinic that is moving to Thursday mornings (since court cleaning has been designated for the first Wednesday of each month). If interested in joining the Tennis Club ($15 membership fee), we welcome your participation in our social
events and activities held throughout the year. Please call or text Donna at 602-657-3949.
Our Annual Tennis Club meeting will be held during the first weeks of January 2023.
