ASSOCIATION
From the General Manager “April showers bring May flowers.” April to me is the “most wonderful time of the year.” The annual membership meeting and board election is behind us, and we have three new board members: Kathy Carmickle, Bonnie Gentry, and Douglas Towns. I look forward to our continued partnership with the Corte Bella Country Club Association, and Leann Blue, General Manager I look forward to working with the new board members. We have completed a lot of wonderful upgrades in the last eight months, and we have some great things coming up. • New fitness center equipment has been installed. • New carpet has been installed in the spa rooms, fitness center, and offices.
• • • • •
Painting is completed in the spa rooms, fitness center, and offices. The movement studio flooring refurbishment is completed. The front entrance renovation is completed. New drinking fountains have been installed. Pickleball and tennis courts have been resurfaced.
Next, we are planning on the retile of the fountain in front of the fitness center, upgrading the spa-area restrooms and waiting areas. We are also working with the contractors for the restaurant and kitchen renovation. We are going to be busy this next year. If you have a suggestion for the fitness center, HOA, or management, please submit your suggestions in the suggestion box located in front of the fitness center and HOA office. We would like to hear from you. Thank you to my staff, board of directors and volunteers for all your hard work, passion, and dedication to your community. Have a wonderful April and remember to stay safe, stay healthy, and please be kind to one another.
In Appreciation: Thirteen Years of CB Times Cover Photos
Corte Bella is blessed with so many generous volunteers who work tirelessly for our community. When Mike Biggs and Jim Laskowicz began taking photos for the CB Times covers, the community was young and the magazine only beginning its current 13-year run. Mike and Jim are creative, insightful, and resourceful. Corte Bella is lucky to have these two talented photographers working each month to help our community publication look great. Many thanks, Mike and Jim, for your loyal service and for your trusty cameras.
Volunteers are the Hear t of Corte Bella

Board Talk The 2022 Annual Membership meeting is behind us and all participants should be congratulated on their presentations. I want to thank everyone for voting in the recent election.
Michael McVeigh, CBCCA Vice President Between the electronic voting system and the paper ballots, we had a large voter turnout. The results were sent out to the community on March 4th with actual totals. We had 8 candidates vying for three open director positions. Congratulations to the elected directors Kathy Carmickle, Bonnie Gentry and Douglas Towns. Thank you to the other candidates who were willing to serve our community. A special thanks to the vote counters and volunteers that assured us of integrity and accuracy. Speaking of volunteers, April is also recognized as National Volunteer Recognition Month, and our HOA annual Volunteer Recognition event is planned for April 4th. I’ve had the privilege of addressing our volunteer group in the past at this annual event, and it’s always a very special evening. If you attended our 2022 Annual Membership Meeting, you saw first hand what our talented volunteers can do when they come together and make a difference for Corte Bella. We saw presentations by Board Liaisons, Committee Chairs, and Committee members on the work they did in 2021 and what goals they have for 2022/2023. Many attendees saw presentations;
I saw team work, creative thinking, and volunteers and partners in our community delivering the results of their efforts in the past year. Many of these same people that volunteer on our behalf also volunteer outside our gates by giving their time, effort and talent, without benefiting monetarily. Our volunteers place the good of others above self, and this dedication places them in a very special family. These are the folks who don’t just wait for things to happen, they make things happen. The volunteers in Corte Bella are the ones that can identify what needs to be done and, as Nike would say, ”Just do it”. You are the people that take pride in your work, feel good about what you are doing, and work well with others as a TEAM. Thanks to all of our residents who volunteer in any capacity. We know you will continue to inspire others to join this special group. You are the heart of Corte Bella! By the time you read this, our “Organizational Meeting” will be behind us, and I’m looking forward to the next year working with our new board. The next Open Board Of Directors meeting will be on Wednesday, April 27th, at 10:00 am. Your thoughts, opinions, and concerns are very important to us as your elected directors.
From the Editor’s Desk April’s the time of year that our nation and our community recognize our many volunteers. In the United States, this month is National Volunteer Recognition Month. And, within Corte Bella, acknowledging our volunteers is mandated by HOA Board policy. As a long-time resident (more than 15 years), I’ve been consistently impressed by the level of service from the many Linda Wright, Editor CB Times
Corte Bellans who serve on the board of directors, serve on all of our HOA committees, help with lifestyle activities and events, assist with our community magazine (proofreading, contributing articles and photos), and those who participate in several Corte Bella charity organizations. There are also many residents who volunteer at organizations throughout the West Valley, serve in local schools, and in churches too. The importance of these contributions to our community and beyond our gates is immeasurable and significant. It’s said that volunteering isn’t just about serving others but, this work benefits the volunteer as well. Being a volunteer promotes overall well-being. May you all be well. Thank you for all you do for our community and beyond.

Did You Know? Corte Bella Architectural Review Committee (ARC)
This is the time of year many of us spend many hours outside so we can enjoy our wonderful weather. Since we will bring out patio and pool furniture this is a good time to review our guidelines:
Guideline 8.7 Patio Furniture & Umbrellas:
1. A reasonable amount of patio furniture may be placed on the rear patio and/or in the front courtyard area (enclosed or not). Patio furniture in the front courtyard area that is not enclosed must be set back a minimum of 20 feet from property line or behind the front edge of garage.
All patio furniture for the front or back patio areas of the house must follow the following guidelines:
a. Colors must complement or closely match or softly blend with the existing color scheme of the home. b. Umbrellas and furniture must be of simple design without figures, designs, verbiage, etc. A striped umbrella may be used if the stripes are shades of the same color. Acceptable colors of a desert pallet include red, burnt orange, cobalt blue, brown, beige, green.
c. Umbrella size and shape must be appropriate for the area in which it is being placed. d. Limit of one umbrella or canopy in the front courtyard area. e. Umbrellas and canopies should be folded and secured or removed during non-use. f. Temporary ramadas, canopies, tents, etc. will not be permitted for more than 48 hours. Did you know you can have a misting system to help cool you down as it gets warmer? Here’s the Guideline:
Guideline 14.4 Misting Systems:
Misting Systems are allowed and must match the body color of the home; equipment must be consistent and match as closely as possible the body color of home.
Merging Our Talents The CB Finance Committee Jesse Young, Finance Chair
What does a former medical device company CEO, the CFO of a private Natural Products company, two former and one current Certified Financial PlannerTM, a major firm human resources recruiter, and a senior auditor from a Fortune 500 firm, have in common? They are all members of the Corte Bella Finance Committee. Whether retired, or still employed, this team steps up throughout the year. They bring deep experience in auditing, financial advising, financial analysis, financial planning, financial reporting, and management to the table. In addition to analyzing CB’s financial and investment reports, here are a few of our projects: •
Starting in 2020 and completed in 2021, Finance Committee members Peter Diamond, Jack Serino, and Lisa Klein created a matrix report which benchmarked 12 age restricted communities across the northwest Phoenix area. The result of this report gives other committees and the CB Board necessary decision-making facts.
•
Each year the Finance Committee directs the community budget to completion. HOA management starts the process, and the committee, organized around multiple
special sessions, analyzes each line item for accuracy. We view the budget as a roadmap and control mechanism. •
The annual audit is another major activity. In 2021, committee members Tom Cerny, Lisa Klein and Ron Tchorzewski screened and selected a new audit firm and did so lowering our audit expense. The community requires this annual audit to validate our previous year’s finances. The audit also acts as a check and balance on our management company.
In addition to the many Finance Committee activities that our members manage, we also volunteer to act as liaison to other committees. The Long-term Planning, Technology and Building and Grounds Committees are represented by Ron Tchorzewski, Jack Serino, and Peter Diamond respectively. They attend meetings and report to our committee monthly. Two committee members, Kathy Carmickle and Bonnie Gentry, have recently been elected to the Corte Bella Board of Directors, another example of this team’s dedication to our community.

Bike Saftey– National Bike Month is in May
•
Ride predictably - Obey traffic control devices (signs, signals, and lane markings).
•
Enter streets and intersections cautiously - Always check for oncoming traffic.
•
Don’t ride on the sidewalk Many people consider sidewalks a safe place to ride. Unfortunately, sidewalks aren’t safe. Stay off them, except where you have no choice. And, never pass a pedestrian until you have his or her attention.
•
Be visible and be seen - Wear bright colors to increase your visibility and make eye contact with drivers.
Check Your Equipment: •
Always inspect your bike prior to riding.
•
Plan to Be Seen. Wear neon, fluorescent or other bright clothing.
•
If you must ride at night, wear reflective clothing, and use flashing lights.
Wear a Helmet: Why? Because a helmet can prevent serious injury to your brain. Although helmets are not required by law statewide, most bicycle organizations and clubs agree bicyclists should always wear helmets.
Stay Safe by following these Rules: •
Arizona Law requires motorist to give cyclist at least 3 feet of space when passing.
•
Ride single-file in the direction of traffic.
•
Remain alert, keep your head up and look around; watch for opening car doors and other hazards.
•
Use hand signals when turning and use extra care at intersections.
•
If You Ride at Night: Arizona Law requires those riding a bike to have: a white headlight visible from at least 500 feet; a red rear reflector visible from 50 to 300 feet.
Be Safe, Bike Smart: •
•
When Biking always carry identification in case of an emergency. Ride on the right - Always ride with the flow of traffic.

Corte Bella Vets Happenings Karen R. Starkman, Secretary Once again, it was a beautiful day for golfing and the Corte Bella Vets want to thank everyone who played a part in making our 8th Annual Charity Golf Tournament an enormous success. We would like to recognize our golfers, the Corte Bella Golf Course staff, volunteers, our veterans, our sponsors, Cindy Buda for singing our national anthem, and our co-chairs Dan Kurtenbach and Michael McVeigh. Congratulations to all our winners (names to be announced) along with the final proceed amount which will be published in our May article. As always, all proceeds from this event will help to fight veteran homelessness, provide direct support to needy veterans and veterans’ families, support/prevent veteran suicide, traumatic brain injury, and provide additional one-time assistance to those veterans who may need a helping hand. This month the Corte Bella Vets were able to provide mortgage assistance to a veteran who was unable to work due to various health issues. This request came to us from the Northwest VA Clinic, and this veteran was thoroughly vetted by one of their social workers. Without your continued support, we would not be able to provide this type of assistance.
Our next meeting will be on Thursday, April 7 at 3:30PM followed by our monthly social. Our guest speaker will be Joan Sisco, Founder and CEO of Veterans First Ltd. Remember, you do not need to be a veteran to join the Corte Bella Vets. Everyone is welcome as long as you are a Corte Bella resident and a patriot!
A Tribute to A Good Man - Jay Finnell Donna Norton Corte Bella lost our last WWII veteran on February 23, when Jay Finnell passed away. Jay approached every day with an openness to adventure, travel, and experiences with friends despite his body’s lack of cooperation. He and his wife, Doris, moved to Corte Bella in 2005. The picture Jay holds is from a dear friend, Bill Miller, who showed up on the Monday before he died. It reads: Remembering years of guidance and gratitude, Love you Jay. Signed, Bill
His new neighbors quickly discovered a friendly, caring, fun-loving couple that were 30+ years their senior. When Doris passed away, Jay became even closer to the neighbors who gladly became more active participants in his life. They shared afternoon talks, meals, walks, and celebrated his 100th birthday with a parade of cars, bikes, and best wishes from neighbors throughout the community. Char & Tom Dietz were especially engaged in caring for their neighbor, becoming an integral part of his life. We were blessed to know Jay who was humble, never believed he did anything special in his life, and always thought other veterans were the heroes. As a young man, he fought evil on the ground and went on to a life of contribution in every community in which he lived. He was an executive for Johnson & Johnson, General Tires, and then started his own business that eventually led to Scholastic Magazine/Weekly Reader. He enjoyed both listening and sharing stories of family, friends, travel, and life lessons with a wonderful timing and a great smile.

The Wines of Spain Deborah Lazear, CSW When looking for wines of value and quality, look no further than Spain. Olé. Thank the Phoenicians who planted vines in the south of Spain, in Jerez, around 1100 B.C. The Spanish wine industry benefited from the nasty louse, phylloxera and the migration of French winemakers from Bordeaux, who were escaping the devastation of their vineyards. They brought their vines and their knowledge, elevating the quality of Spanish wines to a new high. Cava, Spain’s sparkling wine, is produced in the traditional method made famous in Champagne, France. The grapes used are quite different however. Cava is made from a blend of Macabeo, Xarello, and Parellada. Delicous! Spain excels in red Tempranillo. It is also known as Cencibel, Tinto de Toro, Tinto del Pais; there are over 550 strains of Tempranillo in Spain. Other red grapes are Mazuelo (adds acidity and tannin), Graciano (for its aromatics), and Garnacha (Grenache). La Mancha produces over 40% of Spain’s Vino de la Tierra (country wine) from white Airén or red Cencibel. White wines are made from Viura (aka Macabeo), Verdejo, Garnacha Blanca, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Albariño. Rías Baixas is the region of note for whites. Another important white wine region is Rueda (Verdejo, Treixadura (intensely scented), Loureiro (laurel scented) and Torrontés grapes). Most whites are cold fermented and released young.
Rioja, in north-central Spain, is the most well known region. It lies in the Ebro River Valley extending into Basque Country and Navarra. Most wines are blends of the three regions of Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa, and Rioja Baja.Other important regions producing top quality and good value wines are Bierzo (Mencia grape), Toro (Tinta de Toro grape), Ribera del Duero (Tinta del Pais), Priorato, Garnacha (dark & concentrated), Navarra (rosados) and Jumilla (rocky soil, high acidity). Sherry, from Jerez area, is a fortified wine that may be sweet or dry. It deserves its own article, such is the importance and complexity of the process and variety of styles. Look for Crianza Rioja, a young (Joven) red with a year of oak and another of maturing. For more complex reds, choose the Classic, Modern, or New Wave. These are the modern terms for VCIG, Vino de Mesa, DO, DOCa, and top of the line Vinos de Pago. Wines with Reserva on the label indicate 36 months of aging with 12 months in wood. Gran Reserva has 60 months of aging of which 18 are in wood. Wine makers of note are Alvaro Palacios, Pancho Campo, Peter Sissek, and Carlos Falcó. Most famous wines are Pingus, Nermanthia, and Vega Sicilia.

Part 2: Aging Is Inevitable…Or Is It? Mitochondrial Health Dr. Tanya Carroccio, DNP The mitochondria, our cell’s powerhouse, are responsible for cellular respiration. Similar to our need to breathe, so do our cells. Cells consist of numerous structures with highly-specialized functions, but it’s the mitochondria that are unique because this is where oxygen is combined with nutrient (food) molecules to keep the cell full of energy. Additionally, mitochondria each have their own DNA (mtDNA), and mitochondria regulate cellular death (apoptosis). We know that all forms of life produce energy. When cells wear out or when damage occurs, they are forced to stop functioning and the mitochondrion play a complex role in the cell-death process. One prominent theory of aging considers that damage (or mutations of the mtDNA) is linked to cellular death. Damage that accumulates faster than a mitochondrion can repair itself means this becomes a dysfunctional cell, the first step in aging. How can you reduce the damage and help preserve mitochondrion health to slow the aging process? One of the most important is to control your exposure to toxins. Toxins can be in anything that your body absorbs. BPA and phthalates, which are common industrial chemicals, are found in highly processed foods, plastics, lotions, shampoos, etc., and influence mitochondria health. Yet, we expose ourselves to these and others daily. Here are a few “biohacks” to reduce exposure to any dangerous toxins for your mitochondria and to help optimal function: • Consume whole, unprocessed foods as your primary dietary consumption. Ditch the boxed, canned, and sugary foods. • Eat organic, non-GMO foods. • Exercise for 30+ minutes daily. • Avoid using plastic containers for food storage. • Never microwave food in plastic containers. • Invest in a high-quality tap water filtration system (reduce plastic exposure and carbon footprint). • Check your lotions, creams, cleaning supplies for toxins at www.ewg.org. Next month we venture into the importance of your gut microbiome and provide some interesting research on the gutbrain connection, and how a healthy gut is linked to healthy aging. (Reference: Mitochondria and the Future of Medicine, by Dr. Lee Know.) Dr. Tanya Carroccio, DNP is a doctorally prepared nurse practitioner and owner of a functional medicine and regenerative aesthetics practice in Surprise who lives in Corte Bella. Friday Night del Sol Gallery Gala April Featured Artists Rodney Bertram, PORA
Linda Lee Gimby’s vibrant paintings reflect her personality and view of the world. She specializes in a variety of mediums including alcohol ink creations, resin finishes and mixed media designs.
The del Sol Gallery in Sun City West is honored to feature three women artists that represent assorted styles and mediums in their paintings.
Nature and the West are the inspirations for the striking oil paintings of Lois Fox. From her images of the Grand Canyon to her realistic portrayal of cowboys and Native Americans, Lois’s work truly represents the region we love.
The pastel paintings of Donna Heslip draw her audience in for a closer look to marvel at the details she creates in this soft, muted medium.
What Everyone Sees… Your Kitchen Sink Ask Agnes The kitchen sink - the ultimate tool in the room! If the sink is dirty, the whole room suffers. Let’s tackle the problem by sink materials - all sinks benefit by regular cleaning with a base of baking soda and water.
Stainless Steel Sinks: • • • •
Clean with a paste of baking soda and water and a soft cloth. This prevents water marks and stains.
Stainless steel can also be polished with flour and a dry cloth. Club soda works as well.
To remove water spots, use white vinegar and a soft cloth.
For tough stains, try a paste of 3 parts cream of tartar to 1 part hydrogen peroxide and apply to the stain. Allow to dry and then wipe with a wet cloth.
•
To add shine to the sink, use a few drops of baby/mineral oil and wipe off with a paper towel. (A hospital I worked at used this after each use. It was spotless!)
Porcelain Sinks: •
Clean with a paste of baking soda and water. Note that after 18 years, our sink looks like the day it was installed. If I do get a mark from pots or pans scraping on the sink, I use a Mr. Clean eraser sponge. This works like a charm.
Corian Sinks: •
Use the same paste of baking soda and water. Corian is more delicate and once scratched, it will stain.

Your Corte Bella Garden In April “Ladybug” Deborah Lazear There’s a lot to do this month to get our gardens healthy and disease-free before the summer heat hits. Several of these tips are “Green”, using fewer pesticides and more natural substances.
But first, a plea to Corte Bella homeowners. You don’t have to be a gardener to have a beautiful, healthy garden. Give these instructions to your gardening crew and they will also learn better practices. My heart aches when I see yellow shrubs that should be green, all because they are lacking nutrition like iron chelate. Please feed your garden like you feed yourself! Go Green! • • • •
•
Place your used coffee grinds around roses, flowers, and herbs for a shot of acid. They love it!
Check roses for aphids. A spray of 1 tsp liquid dish soap to a gallon of water should do the trick.
Mix white vinegar and 3 drops of dish soap in a spray bottle to kill weeds in your driveway. To encourage tree roots to spread out and away from the trunk, move water emitters out to the drip line. Trees will suffer less in the summer heat with a wider root system.
Fertilize roses full-strength for the last time until September. We will be switching to a weaker strength over the summer. Save the Date!
Request for Donations SOuL Sisters’ Attic
Date: Saturday, April 23rd, Time: 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM in the Corte Bella Social Hall While doing your Spring Cleaning, please consider donating to SOuL for our annual SOuL Sisters’ Attic fundraising sale. SOuL is looking for your fabulous donations of kitchenware, dining ware, wall art, home accessories, mirrors, lamps, small home furnishings and furniture, rugs, games and sporting equipment, holiday and seasonal decorations, jewelry, totes, scarves, and handbags. Please note: no clothing, shoes, draperies, bed or bath linens, books, CDs, DVDs of any kind. Questions or requests for assistance can be directed to Carol Courter, 602-999-2790 or carolfcourter@gmail.com.
•
Fertilize citrus in pots.
•
Place mulch around roots of plants and roses to protect against drying out. Remember not to allow the mulch to touch the trunk as this encourages rot.
•
•
• • •
• • •
Fertilize palms. Don’t “scalp” the remnants of removed fronds; they are trunk protection against disease, bugs, and sunburn.
Replace your watering controller battery, whether you need to or not! The consequences of a battery failure while you are away for a cool trip to the coast can be heart breaking.
Move tree ties up or down a few inches to avoid scarring the bark. Check agaves for snout weevil (1” long black “uglies”).
Do heavy pruning of oleanders this month. Cut branches about 1 foot above the ground. Start in the middle and remove tall branches. They will grow back and reward you with lush green. Simply cutting off the tops will encourage top growth only leaving bare trunks below. Plant penstemons this month to attract hummingbirds.
Plant basil in your herb garden if you didn’t do it in March Prune bougainvillea, lantana, and verbena.
Collection of donations will begin on April 2nd and continue through April 16th at the following locations: • Diane Kingsley: Games, Sporting goods, 623-234-8505, 23215 N. Padaro Court • Deb Humpal: Kitchen/Dining & Small Appliances, 602-499-3622, 22725 N. Pico Dr. • Linda Wright: Home Accessories & Lighting, 571-426-1670, 13224 W. Corte Bella Golf Club News & Notes Keith Kalny, PGA General Manager April just might be the best month for golf in Arizona. No frosty mornings and no extra layer of clothing as temperatures warm up. The days are longer and you can tee-off earlier or later and still get in 18. April is glorious. Your Neighborly Feedback: Thanks for your calls and emails about our golf club and the course. I appreciate your helpful observations. Our hard-working grounds crew is tasked with prepping the course daily, but they are also devoting time to trimming bushes and spraying for weeds in the red rock areas. We appreciate you allowing golfers to enjoy the course and only those golfers. Please don’t access the golf course to walk the paths, hit a few practice shots, or allow children to run around on the course. Get Your Kicks: Last month I mentioned new apparel arrivals in our golf shop. Great new fashion continues to arrive so, come have a look. Our Route 66 golf shoe sale is on – select pairs specially priced at $66.00. Membership Director: Tyson Siegler, our Membership Director, is available to discuss club amenities you will have as a golf member. Contact Tyson at 623-556-8951 or via email at tsiegler@cortebellagolfclub.com. We do have a special Twilight Membership offer that might be of special interest.
Our Corte Bella Grill: Not everyone plays golf, but everyone enjoys delicious food and drinks. If you have yet to visit our grill, please stop by. Our patio is a fine place to enjoy lunch and cocktails Our kitchen serves from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, 7 days a week. Weekly specials, chef-made soups, hand-crafted burgers, fresh sandwiches, and salads are available. My special tip: try the Cuban Sandwich - fantastic! We are hiring: We are always looking for good help. If you know of anyone with service experience or a desire to get involved with the golf club business, point them our way. Enjoy your April. My email: kkalny@cortebellagolfclub.com.
Tennis Season in Full Swing; Equipment at Your Fingertips Donna Norton, Corte Bella Tennis Club Our annual meeting in January set the stage for a year filled with activities as we continue to discover new neighbors that are willing and ready to play. We welcomed Jim Riff and Lynn Berens to our club. Meanwhile, free tennis clinics have attracted a few new neighbors who are looking for something new in their lives. (These clinics are held on Wednesdays at 8:00 AM.) Our first tournament of the 2022 season is being hosted by Otto Furuta and Dale Hoffman. These two are planning an all-Corte Bella Tennis players tournament called “Swing into Spring” on Saturday, April 9th. There will be a cookout after the tournament in the lanai area. Please contact Donna Norton at 602-657-3949 if you are interested in joining us. We know the challenges of “entertaining” little people, but we have a solution which is 30 minutes a day on a Corte Bella Tennis Court. Following the “Kid’s Club” playbook, you touch on skills that they can grasp quickly and have some success (for ages 4years
to 8 years). Developed by the United States Tennis Association, it’s available in the ball machine storage area with rackets, balls as well as the instruction books. In addition to playing, children learn about being a good sport by having the following qualities: honesty, respect, teamwork, caring, responsibility. Enjoy!
