ASSOCIATION
“All Things Seem Possible in May” Spring has sprung and a lot of our seasonal residents will be leaving. Here are some important tips to get your home ready for your departure. To assist you as you prepare your home for the summer months, we have accumulated several ideas and suggestions for your consideration. Leann Blue, General Manager
3.
Unplug all appliances inside.
4.
Consider adding dusk-to-dawn lighting.
General Recommendations: 1.
Place your valuables and important documents in your safety deposit box if you have one.
2.
Let all window coverings hang naturally.
3.
Lock the gate to the backyard.
4.
Arrange for a reliable person to take care of maintaining the property in a manner to prevent an appearance of abandonment.
5.
Place all patio furniture, chimes, and shades inside the garage.
Notification:
1. Complete an address change form in the HOA office. 2.
3.
Notify a neighbor, as to location of a house key, the name of your caretaker, and your summer address plus a contact phone number.
Outside Property: 1.
If any unusual activity is noted by your neighbor, advise them to call the HOA Securitas guards at 623-544-3906 and, if possible, report the license plate number of the suspect’s vehicle plus a description of the suspect. Or, call the Sheriff’s department.
2.
Have a neighbor pick up and dispose of any newspapers that might be dropped in your driveway.
Forward your mail or put it on hold with the US Postal Service.
Air Conditioner: 1.
Decide whether to leave it in the “ON” position at the highest temperature or simply turn it off.
Windows and Doors: 1.
Use small locks or strong sticks on the tracks of the sliding doors, windows, and patio doors. You can purchase them at Walmart or any hardware store. Be sure all sunscreens are securely held in place.
Electricity: 1.
Unplug the garage door opener motor, but do not disengage the emergency pull chain.
2.
Be sure to leave the power on for your irrigation system.
Please remember that your property and landscape are still your responsibility while you are away. It is my recommendation that you have a family member, neighbor or landscape company take care of your landscape while you are away from your home. For those of you leaving, safe travels and we will see you when you return. “That is one good thing about this world... There are always sure to be more Springs.”
From the Editor’s Desk May and June are wonderful months here in the Valley of the Sun, and for us on the Northwest side of this valley, we will all enjoy the great weather and abundant sunshine. Everyone will be swimming, playing various court sports, golfing, and enjoying al fresco dining on the Anacapa patio. There are plenty of HOA events to keep you busy like the Mother’s Day and Father’s Day events in the Anacapa,
the Memorial Day dinner/dance, a TAD concert, a cabaret, blood donation drive, Monday Food Trucks, and a trip to a famous rodeo. We are truly blessed to live in this community that offers us so much. While some of us will be preparing to relocate to different locales for the summer, many of us will remain and “hold down the fort,” so to speak. To every CB Times reader, thank you for supporting our community publication. Our next issue will be a combined June/July issue. Keep reading and keep Corte Bella the very best place to live in the Northwest Valley. Pray for a good monsoon season. Pray for rain.

Pedestrian Safety Ruth Mooney, Neighborhood Awareness and Safety Committee (NASC) Member
Walking Safety Tips Check Your Equipment: •
Be predictable. Follow the rules of the road and obey signs and signals.
•
Wear shoes that provide ample foot and ankle support and have suitable grip to prevent sliding or slipping.
•
When walking alone, always carry identification in case of an emergency.
•
Stay Alert – avoid distractions. Distractions are everywhere today and becoming increasingly difficult to avoid. Remember that your eyes and ears are your best tools for keeping safe.
•
Put down your phone. Smartphones and handheld devices take your eyes off the road and distract your attention.
•
Don’t wear headphones. Your ears will tell you a lot about what is happening around you – be sure to use them.
•
Be visible at all times! Drivers need to see you. Wear bright clothing during the day and wear reflective materials or use a flashlight at night. Never assume drivers see you just because you see them.
•
Stay on sidewalks whenever possible. Whenever possible, cross streets at crosswalks or intersections, where drivers expect pedestrians. Look for cars in all directions, including those turning left or right.
•
•
Never assume a driver will give you the right of way or stop for you because you are in a crosswalk. Make every effort to make eye contact with drivers of a stopped or approaching vehicle before entering the roadway. If a sidewalk is not available, stay to the far side of the road and always
face traffic. •
If a crosswalk or intersection is not available, locate an area where you have the best view of traffic. Wait for a gap in traffic that allows enough time to cross safely.
•
Be careful. Not all drivers follow traffic rules or signs. Always be aware of vehicles that are around you so you may take control of your own safety.

Provence, France: The Land of Sunflowers, Lavender, and Garrigue! Deborah Damery Lazear, CSW Provence is France’s oldest winemaking region. The Greeks from Asia Minor founded Massalia (today Marseille) in the 6th century BC. In the 2nd century BC, the Romans changed the name of the whole area to nostra provincial from which the current name Provence is derived. In the Middle Ages, the vineyards and wineries were under the care of monastic orders who made high quality wine, especially Rosé. In the 14th century AD, Rosé became the wine of the aristocrats. The climate is Mediterranean with exceptional amounts of sunshine. The Mistral, the cold, dry north wind, chases away humidity and drops the temperature during the hot summer months. The soil is calcerous, with limestone and quartz. The term garrigue refers to both the soil and the resinous herbs, like rosemary, that grow there. The white grapes include Rolle, Ugni Blanc (aka Trebianno), Grenache Blanc, Bourboulenc Blanc, Clairette, Picardan,
Sémillon, Marsanne and Roussanne. Red grapes are Grenache Noir, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Carignan, Cinsault, Counoise, Terret Noir, Tannat, Malbec, Merlot, and a little Cabernet Sauvignon. The acronym GMS seen on wine bottles here, and around the world, refer to Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Syrah blends. White wine has no grape restriction but the reds must contain at least two grapes from the list above. Rosé may contain up to 20% white grapes. In 1995, Côtes de Provence Cru Classé classified 18 Estates as “the best of the best”. Important regions in Southern France are Cahors, Madiran, Bandol, Minervois, Corbières, Banyuls, Côteaux d’Aix-en-Provence, Roussillon, and Tavel.

Part 3: Aging is Inevitable…Or is It? Your Gut Bacteria & Health Dr. Tanya Carroccio, DNP Our digestive system is the most important gateway to our health. What we eat or drink immediately starts a cellular reaction throughout our body. Our cells rely on us to provide non-toxic, nutrient-dense food, and liquids that can support body functions we needs to keep us healthy. When we ingest medication, highlyprocessed foods, and sugary drinks, we cause a level of harm to our cells. This includes gut microbiome.
especially dangerous to the microbiome. The Standard American Diet (SAD) offers little nutritional value to keep our “good” gut bacteria flourishing and diverse. If low bacterial diversity, or some “bad” bacteria are present, it causes numerous symptoms ranging from GI issues, memory loss, anxiety, moodiness, inflammation, and obesity. The best way to identify the health of your gut is by visiting a functional medicine practitioner https://www.ifm.org/ find-a-practitioner/ Functional medicine practitioners are experts at whole person, root-cause
medicine, and the gut microbiome. Many people think that just grabbing any probiotic is ok, but there is research showing that if you do not have adequate gut testing prior to using these, you may be doing yourself more harm. Reference: The Mind-Gut Connection, by Dr. Emeran Mayer, MD. Dr. Tanya Carroccio, a doctorly-prepared nurse practitioner, is the owner of a functional medicine and regenerative aesthetics practice in Surprise, and she lives in Corte Bella. Visit www.Benehealth.com for more information.
What is gut microbiome and microbiota? Microbiome is the environment in which micro-organisms live and microbiota are the actual living microorganisms themselves (gut bacteria). Research has been focusing on the relationship of these microbiota, our health, and aging. Gut microbiota is influential on numerous areas of health including hormones, metabolism, mood, brain functioning, appetite, and immunity. Science has learned that people with a high bacterial diversity live healthier, longer lives without the chronic diseases that cause aging. Saturated fatty acid intake, processed sugars, excessive protein consumption, antibiotics, and medications that cause adverse gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are

CB Wine Tasting Group News Jeanie and Jesse Young The Corte Bella Winetasting Group is open to new members! The main objective of the CB Winetasting group is social, with the idea that you can enjoy the company of others while learning about wine along the way. The group meets on the 2nd Saturday of each month – 5:30 PM until 9:00 PM. The group meets in a host’s home, rotating across all members. To make the hosting manageable, we split the larger group into sub-groups with no more than 20 to 25 total members.
The host creates the theme, purchases the wine, and shares information on their theme, for example, the region, the varietals, etc. Wine glasses and nametags are provided. Attending members simply notify the organizer of their attendance, brings an appetizer and $15 per person to the event The group leaders maintain the registry, send out invitations and assist the host where needed. Call Jessie at 303.748.9897 or email jessedyoung23@gmail.com to sign up or for more information.

The music of the Fab Four came alive for Corte Bella when these talented young musicians gave us a wonderful concert under the desert sky. It was a magical evening.
This annual event is the HOA’s tribute to the many volunteers who work every year to keep our community the best place to live in the West Valley. The buffet dinner was wonderful, the decorations were inspired, and the opportunity to thank so many dedicated people was memorable.
St.Patrick’s Day in the Anacapa Colorfully dressed residents enjoyed green beer and a delicious traditional dinner special of corned beef and cabbage. The luck of the Irish surely will bless all who were in attendance.

Spring Marketplace Saturday, April 9
The annual shopping event provided residents with around 60 different small business vendors from which to chose. The day was a perfect one for browsing or buying something special.
Corte Bella Spring Car Show Saturday, April 9
There are many wonderful and classic cars that reside within the gates of Corte Bella. This annual Spring show allows their owners to proudly display these beautiful machines. Corte Bella Car Club organizers Howard and Debbie Evans did a great job!
TAD Concert: Piano Men Generations The Music of Billy Joel and Elton John Sunday, April 19
Corte Bella was treated to the very best of TAD concerts with this show by Terry Davis and his son Chris, backed by an incredible band. This show was the very best and enjoyed out under the beautiful desert Springtime skies.
The evening’s wine and food pairing were magical for the 62 residents who attended this elegant dinner. Education on the “fruit of the vine” and Spanish cuisine culture provided everyone with a most enjoyable experience.
Easter Egg Hunt Sunday April 17
It’s a Corte Bella tradition for the grandchildren of residents and staff. More than 90 kids from age 0 to age 9 “hunted” for almost 1,800 stuffed (with jelly beans) eggs to fill their Easter baskets. After the hunt, each child was able to select a wonderful gift as well. Thanks to the wonderful HOA Events volunteers who helped to prepare the eggs, worked the event, and who helped the children and their families have a wonderful Easter experience.
Anacapa Easter Brunch Sunday, April 17
The Anacapa, the social hall, and the patios were all decorated with the colors of Spring for this annual festive celebration of Easter. The wonderful menu featuring Easter traditional selections was enjoyed by many Corte Bella residents and their guests.

Black Light Play:
Corte Bella Pickleball Club hosted a Night Glow Pickleball event Saturday, March 26th, and invited the local SPY (Surprise Pickleball Youth) to join in the fun. Kids and adults mixed and played. Part of the evening’s proceeds go to sponsor these kids in area tournaments. A great time was had by all.

On an asphalt slab in front of a wooded home, Gov. Jay Inslee on Monday signed into law a bill he said was three years in the making. The bill Inslee signed, of course, was SB 5615, which made pickleball the official sport of Washington. Inslee was surrounded by pickleball paddles, community members, and longtime pickleball fans. Even the CEO of USA Pickleball, Stu Upson, was in attendance. The signing took place on the original home-based pickleball court (formerly a badminton court) on the shores of Bainbridge Island, where the game was conceived in 1965. Inslee began by quoting the founding fathers, professing that all are created equal and endowed with certain inalienable rights. “Amongst those rights being the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of pickleball,” he said to a chuckling audience.
Popular Sport:
Pickleball grew in the U.S. by a remarkable 21% between 2019 and 2020. Today, 4.2 million U.S. players compete on nearly 35,000 courts. Roughly 60% of regular picklers are ages 55 or older.

Corte Bella’s “All White” Tournament Donna Norton, Corte Bella Tennis Club Dale Huffman and Otto Furuta led off the 2022 Corte Bella Tennis Club tournament season as directors for our “All White” RoundRobin tournament held on April 9th. They will be a hard act to follow, given their outstanding communication, organization, logistic support; and best of all their culinary skills at the grill in the pool area. Organized to start early (given the oncoming heat), each player rotated through five different match-ups based on win/loss record. Reno Peterson was the top point getter with Karen Watkins and Doug Kitts close behind. Gift certificates provided by Ray’s Rackets were given to the top players, while honorable
mention players received tennis dampeners (shock absorption) with the Wimbledon logo. Our next tournament will be in the fall with a homecoming theme followed by the red/blue team competition to round out the season. We welcome all Corte Bella residents to consider joining us on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for drop-in play starting at 7:00 AM (as it gets hotter), and a free clinic on Wednesday mornings at 8:00 AM (except in the summer). We have a Women’s Tennis League on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and a Men’s League on Thursday and Saturday. Please contact Donna Norton at 602-657-3949 to find a game! Corte Bella Golf Club News & Notes Keith Kalny, PGA General Manager With summer upon us, the Corte Bella Golf Club tends to slow down a bit. About 40% of our members are seasonal and by the time the CB Times reaches you, many of them will have departed for their cooler homes. That does not mean the fun stops, both on and off the course, here at the Corte Bella Golf Club. May Hours: Starting in May, the Golf Shop will be open from 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday, and till 5:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday. Food service in our grill will run from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Friday. On the weekends, we will be serving breakfast from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM and lunch from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Bar Service is available after 4:00 PM till last call. Hours are subject to change and may be adjusted in June. New Breakfast Menu in May: Unfortunately, at press time, I don’t have all the specifics but here’s the general outline for our new breakfast offerings starting in May. There’ll be eggs cooked
to order, hash browns, an omelette of the day, pancakes, and a quiche of the day. The course kitchen’s small, making a larger menu difficult. But we have great cooks, and you’ll enjoy having breakfast on the patio before the day heats up or in our clubhouse. Your Feedback Helps: Keep those calls and emails coming about the course and our club. Many of you have 24/7 views of the course and see things we may miss. We’ve been working on spraying weeds and will be improving the bunker conditions plus addressing the red rock erosion areas this summer. We appreciate you allowing golfers to enjoy the course, and only golfers. Please don’t access the golf course to walk the paths, hit practice shots, or allow children on the course. Membership Director: Tyson Siegler, our Membership Director, is available to discuss club amenities and the fun you’ll have as a golf member. Contact Tyson at 623-556-8951 or via email at tsiegler@cortebellagolfclub.com. We do have a special Twilight Membership offer that might be of interest. Enjoy the Summer. My email: kkalny@cortebellagolfclub.com.
