Did you know that Corte Bella is a limited member of PORA (Property Owners & Residents Association) in Sun City West and residents of Corte Bella are entitled to use some of their services? I interviewed Connie Scott, who is the Executive Director, and discussed what services are available to us and how they work. Arguably, the most important service they offer is their consumer services referral program. There are over 600 contractors offering more than 100 services such as roofing, remodeling, plumbing, and electrical. Bob Rosenberg, Vice President, Board of Directors A vendor has to be recommended by five separate references and they also check with the Registrar of Contractors and the Better Business Bureau before they are considered for the program. If you were to have a problem with a contractor they offer to provide assistance between you and the contractor. The volunteers man the phones during the day and will give you three or more references. Their website is www.porascw.org and the phone number is (623) 584-4288. The Master Gardener program, which is affiliated with the University of Arizona, is available from 9:00 A.M. to 12:00 Noon, Monday through Friday. You can find specific details of how this program works and what services they provide on the website.

Offices are maintained for the Visitors Center, which is an Arizona Office of Tourism, and you are welcome to visit. I found maps of the immediate area and Maricopa County, among other places of interest in Arizona. A representative for the Arizona State Attorney General is available Monday and Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 12:00 Noon at their satellite office (appointment required). A representative from Benevilla is available on the third Wednesday of the month from 9:00 A.M. to 12:00 Noon. There is a satellite office for the US senate representative and the Maricopa County Tax Assessor. The schedule of their availability can be checked on line or by placing a phone call. You can join PORA as an Associate Member which would entitle you to local discounts and the ability to attend PORA’s Adult Learning where over 90 classes are offered during fall, spring, and summer semesters. The Adult Learning’s web site is www. poraadultlearning.org where online registration is also available. PORA is open from 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. and is located at 13815 Comino del Sol in Sun City West; their phone number is (623) 584-4288. This is a very helpful service that is staffed by a very dedicated group of volunteers. I would like to thank Connie Scott for sharing this information and would recommend that you stop by their building and familiarize yourself with the services that they offer. Board Talk

Communications at Corte Bella Bob Rosenberg, Vice President, Board of Directors It’s my turn to write a column as a Board Director and communications is something that I have been involved in for the past five years. In various discussions with members of the community over this period of time I have encountered a fair degree of misinformation, so this is the time for clarification.

out and delivery is planned as close to the first of the month as possible. Sometimes there might be delays for one reason or another, but this is the exception, not the rule. This is the only method, short of a letter that reaches 100% of the residents. A newsletter would still require the preparation of content, so that would not solve the problem. The magazine needs a two-week lead time and that is why the articles can’t be up to the minute like a newspaper or newsletter. A final word about the magazine: The magazine needs more residents involved in the editorial process to create a greater diversity in its articles. If you enjoy writing, editing, taking photographs, or any other function that you think might be useful to the magazine, contact the community manager or myself and volunteer to help.

One page of ad copy pays for one page of Corte Bella’s content; when additional pages are purchased, the cost is $400 for four pages. If no additional pages are bought the cost of the publication of the magazine is zero. The only cost involved in this case would be the postage to send the magazine to the residents. You can expect 10 issues of the magazine during the year with June and July sharing one issue, and August and September combined to form another double issue. The Corte Bella Times is delivered to every current resident’s address; these addresses are updated from the records at First Service before the magazine is mailed

Email blasts are sent to approximately 65% of the community. While extremely effective, the likelihood is that this method of communication will never reach the entire community. The primary advantage is the timeliness of the material since the emails are received the same day they are sent. The web site is prepared on a “canned platform” and is hosted by a company called Association Voice, the cost being $175 a month for the service. While a relative bargain cost-wise, there are limitations to making any modifications to the site’s format. The main parts of the site that are visited most often are the directory searches for other community members, the Anacapa calendar, discussion groups, and classified ads. In a recent month, there were over 600 visits in a day with

10 | CB Times | The Official Community Magazine of Corte Bella

the average visitor clicking through four pages. Additional help is needed to ensure that the web site is kept up-to-date and that there is backup when someone is unavailable. You can submit your offer to help with the web site to the Community Manager or to myself at RLRose27@hotmail.com. The last method of communication is the phone calls sent out by First Services to inform you of meeting dates or news of an immediate nature such as a problem within the community. You can help by making sure that your phone number, mailing address, and email address (if you have one) are up-to-date by informing the office of any changes. This is your community and the other volunteers and I have done our best to keep you as up to date as possible on the goings on in Corte Bella. Again, not to beat a dead javelina (or however the saying goes), but we can use all the help we can get. Consider volunteering today.

Do You Know the “WHO” Behind the Christmas Tree? Hilda Furkert and Celeste Nelson We sat down with John and Roz Belliveau recently and listened to the story of their fascinating life together. Many of you, of course, know of the Belliveau’s generous donation of their Christmas tree and beautiful ornaments* to Corte Bella. But did you know . . . John began his career in the Air Force, and later worked as an executive recruiter. After twenty-five years, he was faced with burn-out and literally hung a “Gone Fishing” sign on his door. “I started out with a charter service and wound up with a yacht management company . . . eighteen years I did that . . . out on the water I’ve spent 10,000 hours.” In the meantime, Roz owned and ran a Ford dealership in Florida. After her retirement and John’s reluctant entry into retirement (“Depression babies don’t do that”), they traveled the world. They have visited all of the Seven Wonders of the World except the Christ of the Andes. For Roz a trip to the Taj Mahal was the fulfillment of a childhood dream – “Just pure sparkling white . . . it’s a work of art.” John remembers their firsty visit to Egypt, “So awed and walking down in those ... 4,000 years old and the paintings are perfect. It never leaves you.” On a recent visit to the Tall Ship Festival in California, John bought a dilapidated model of his favorite ship, the Sovereign of the Sea. “I loved this ship . . . it’s one of the most beautiful . . . largest ever built.” John spent a month restoring the model to its former glory and proudly displays it in his “man cave”. The only remaining question: Where will their next adventure take them? P. S. Next time you see John, have him tell the story of the time he drove Richard Petty’s race car for 30 laps at 150 MPH. “I loved it.” Scared? “Not in the least!” * Their Christmas tree will be replaced this year with a new one, but Roz’s beautiful ornaments will remain to delight us.

ASSOCIATION

Corte Bella -

A Great Community, Safe and Sound! Residents at various times have voiced their concerns about security, and safety from criminals and crime in Corte Bella. This article provides some details on how Corte Bella is doing; provides information to help you understand why we are relatively safe; and lastly, provides information (and sources) on what you can do to improve your own and your neighbors’ safety and security. Jim Williams, President, Board of Directors To start with, nationwide studies cite camera and alarm systems, video recording, and security personnel as important methods that deter crime. The good news is that Corte Bella has all four. Front and back gates have multiple cameras in place and all cameras record video continuously. The HOA has used the recording several times to investigate and resolve incidents. And, all of our facilities are centrally alarmed. We also have a dedicated Neighborhood Awareness and Safety Committee (NASC) that works closely with the HOA and Board, Securitas (our Security Company) and Maricopa County Sheriff Office (MCSO). NASC and Securitas actions directly resulted in many of the systems and procedures we have today.

Figure 1 (Above)

Consider also that we are a gated community with access control and random security patrol—providing an excellent inherent deterrence according to the MCSO and other law enforcement agencies. All of this adds up to a nearly crime-free community (and adding value to your home). The crime statistics verify this. Figure one (below) is a compilation of home burglaries that occurred from January 2011 to September 2013 within Corte Bella and a three-mile area around us. If you are keeping score, then it is Corte Bella: 0, outside: 170. Similarly, Figure two (below) shows all crimes that occurred within and around Corte Bella from January 2013 to September 2013. Score: Corte Bella: 3, outside: 223. Looks great for Corte Bella—right? Well it definitely does, but, this is the place where I say the HOA and Board can only do so much to facilitate a safe community. The rest is up to you; it is your community, your neighbors and your responsibility to take control of your own safety and security, and enlist personal measures as you feel are necessary. What follows are some steps you can take, and tips compiled by our own NASC and law enforcement. If you are concerned, then be proactive. Consider having an alarm system (insurance may be discounted). Some systems also include fire and medical alerts. Be sure to use alarm signs and stickers showing you are protected. Install motion activated security lighting front and back. You can also have your existing outdoor lights motion sensor activated, or turn

Keep your garage doors closed; an open garage is an invitation to “come and get it!” Consider using a secondary blocking device on sliding glass doors. If leaving the area for a few days or an extended period, be sure to cancel mail (or forward) and newspapers, and have someone check on the house. If you let Securitas know that you will be gone, then they will do periodic drive-bys (Note: you can enter away dates yourself into our Resident & Visitor Management System). Use timers on interior/exterior lights to give the home a “lived-in” look. Don’t hide a door key outside—they are easily found. If you see or hear suspicious activity, feel threatened, or are just concerned about something happening, then call 911. Call 911 for all emergencies, serious accidents and crimes in progress. Call the Sheriff’s Office at their 24-hour non-emergency service (listed below) for a suspicious vehicle or loud noises, or general information.

And, last but not least, there are a several websites that provide information on crimes and crime prevention. The crime data I compiled came from raidsonline.com (MCSO data feeds into their database) and crimemapping.com. The Surprise Police Dept. has a good website with homeowner crime stories and tips at: http://www.surpriseaz.gov/index.aspx?nid=882

If you know of an incident or crime that occurred, then let the HOA (or Securitas) know as soon as possible. The HOA, Securitas, and MCSO will coordinate. Once the HOA is informed they will let the community know what happened—and that is a good thing. (Note: only two of eight crimes that occurred the past three years were reported to the HOA).

The MCSO has some tips at: http://www.mcso.org/Prevention/ SafetyTips/Default.aspx?t=cp Yes—this is a great community! Knowing that it is safe and sound enriches all of us, brings peace of mind, and again confirms that Corte Bella is a wonderful place to live.

COMMUNITY

Ask Agnes In polite company we don’t usually talk about toilets except to ask where the nearest one might be. However, in reality we all have them, use them, and have to clean them. So let’s talk about how to clean a toilet, shall we? Commercial toilet bowl cleaners are for use INSIDE the toilet only! Do not get that caustic stuff on anything outside the bowl; not the seat surely. I’ve seen many toilet seats that have been carelessly cleaned and have permanent blue stains from bowl cleaners. The paint on wooden seats can be dissolved and plastic seats can be damaged. Plain old white vinegar makes an effective cleaner. It’s cheap, and not caustic. I put a cup of vinegar in the bowl and come back one hour later to swish and flush. It also helps to remove that hard-water ring. Seldom-used toilets should be flushed regularly to keep them in good operating order.

The exterior of the toilet can be cleaned with any all-purpose cleaner and a damp cloth. Be sure to get the base of the toilet. This cloth should not be reused in any other area of the house. Toilet seats should be wiped with any allpurpose cleaner or even mild dishwashing liquid and a damp cloth [this cloth should not be used elsewhere in the house]. No abrasive cleaners, as they will damage the finish. That means no Mr. Clean Eraser, Comet, or other “bathroom cleansers” on anything except porcelain.

Corte Bella Residents Invest in Education Corte Bella’s own Marty and Pat Scheinholtz traveled to Pennsylvania in mid-September to attend convocation at Penn State Hershey College of Medicine in Hershey, PA. Convocation is the formal opening of the academic year and has been a tradition since 1987. The Dean hosts convocation while members of the faculty and alumni society attend to present graduate and medical students academic rewards and scholarships. The Dr. Martin F. and Patricia A. Scheinholtz College of Medicine Endowment gives recognition and financial assistance to an outstanding medical student enrolled in the College of Medicine who has achieved a positive academic record and who manifests promise of outstanding academic success; who indicates a high level of professionalism; who displays exceptional humanitarianism; who demonstrates promise of success in their medical careers; and who has demonstrated financial need. Eric E. Jung was selected as this year’s scholarship recipient. Jung completed studies at Stanford in Chemical Engineering prior to acceptance at Penn State Hershey COM and is currently President of the AMA-Penn State Student Chapter, as well as the student representative to the AAMC Organization. He volunteers in several free clinics, has received many academic honors, and has authored publications in physical chemistry. He is the only member in his immediate and extended family to attend graduate or medical school. Jung has stated that this scholarship will assist him in reaching both his academic and professional goals by alleviating the financial stress of his medical education and assist him in the purchasing of the necessary books, resources, and materials for his education.

The Scheinholtzes had the opportunity to spend several hours with Jung, saying that he is, “an exemplary young man who is very appreciative of this scholarship. We understand that he hopes to specialize in either general internal medicine with a focus on urban/rural underserved populations or emergency medicine with a focus on quality improvement and patient safety. We wish him much success in his career.”

Reader Submission: Coyote Bella We at the Times always welcome reader submissions. The following photographs were captured this fall by Corte Bella resident Bob Schmidt. ***** FIVE FUN FACTS … about coyotes that you may not have known. 1. The scientific name of a coyote is “Canis latrans” which means “barking dog.” 2. The coyote’s signature gait (it can often be seen tiptoeing) is done in an effort to avoid predators by making as little noise as possible. 3. Coyotes can be very cunning: When strolling in packs, one coyote might jump around to distract its prey while another coyotes approaches from behind. 4. The coyote is a very popular animal in Native American mythology and is usually revealed to be a cunning and clever trickster … hence the name in the popular cartoon, Wile E. Coyote. 5. However, don’t be fooled by the Wile E. Coyote cartoons! A coyote can reach speeds of up to 43 miles-perhour, while its feathered counterpart, the roadrunner, can only reach a (lifethreatening) max of 20 miles-perhour.

Hi, I'm Rick Lane, owner of "Save On Services". My brother, Marcus, and I answer our own phones and perform all repairs so that we know the WORK IS DONE RIGHT and you're treated as a VALUED CUSTOMER. We have no warehouse, low advertising costs and no employees, so we can offer you the LOWEST PRICES POSSIBLE and a LIFETIME WARRANTY ON ALL PARTS AND LABOR. Instead of worrying, just call us (Rick or Marcus!) right now. Frankly, most garage door problems are easier to repair and less costly than you might think. And if we don't have an inexpensive solution, we'll direct you to the right place. However, we can probably help you right away with advice, pricing questions, parts, service and repairs. If you're eager to get the door working again there's no problem we can't fix the same day you call. But no matter what the problem is, we can give you good advice.

Here’s some advice…BEWARE! Some companies have technicians who are paid a commission and have to charge more to make a paycheck. When you hear prices for springs start at $45 to $120 — LOOK OUT! There will be more hidden charges.

Maui Magic Comes to Corte Bella SOuL (Smiling Out Loud) Twinkling lights, dancing rhythms, colorful leis, and a festive Hawaiian arbor greeted friends and neighbors who came to support Maui Magic, a charitable affair held by SOuL on Friday, October 11th that benefited Eve’s Place. The festivities raised more than $2,200 and included homemade hors d’oeuvres and desserts by the members of SOuL, a chocolate fountain, a lively DJ, professional photographs to memorialize the event (a special thanks to Mike Biggs for that), and libations on the patio poured by Anacapa’s very own staff.

Throughout the evening, old friends were greeted back after the summer and new ones were made as everyone danced and mingled—surrounded by palm trees and music. All that was missing were the ocean waves … but we did have the Corte Bella fountains. Mid-evening, there was a raffle with prizes donated by the Anacapa, Golf Club, and Day Spa (thanks to each of you). And, as the clock came ‘round to 10, farewells were said leaving everyone with fond memories of an enjoyable evening well-spent for a very worthy cause. Thank you all for supporting SOuL and our charity for the year, Eve’s Place.

Shalom! Please join us on Wednesday, Nov. 27th at 5:15 P.M. for the Hanukkah Menorah Lighting Ceremony at the Anacapa Restaurant.

Pickleball News John Friesner, CB Pickleball President Summer is gone—for now—and the cooler nights and wonderful mornings are back. Why not play a little pickleball? The pickleball courts are busier now, but there is always room for new players. We have eight courts reserved for member play on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays in November and December and four courts all other days. If you are not familiar with pickleball and want to learn about the game, stop by any time to learn more about it from any of our friendly members. It’s an easy game to pick up even if you have played any racket sport before; you’ll even see improvement the first time you play. Come join us!

Court Reservation The new online reservation system is up and running and is really easy to use. If you want to reserve a court for pickleball, tennis, or bocce ball, go to http://holdmycourt.com/reserve2/cortebella to simply reserve an open court. The first time you visit the site, you’ll need to sign in/register by entering your name, email, a password, and a phone number. For all future reservations, you’ll need to enter your email address and password, only. Each time a reservation is submitted, you’ll receive an email confirmation.

So, bookmark the above site to gain easy access—and join in on the fastest growing sport in the United States.

Club Membership If you’d like to become a member of the Corte Bella Pickleball Club, this is what is included with your membership: • Access to all member play times • Ability to join in ladder play • All pickleballs provided for all member play times • Name tag with the Corte Bella Pickleball Club logo • Invitations to all social events • Nonstop fun! Stop by the courts and join in on the fun. We think you’ll enjoy the game and get as much of a workout as you want. But … be advised … it is addicting. Also, check out our calendar of events posted on the bulletin board next to the courts. Have questions about the club or the game itself? Send us an email at cortebellapickleballclub@outlook.com. Hope to see you on the courts!

The Las Raquettes - Corte Bella’s 3.0 Ladies’ Tennis League Vicki Faaborg, Team Captain Ladies, it’s that time again for us to dust off the tennis rackets we meant to use this summer and join the Las Raquettes for a fun season of exercise, new friendships, and improved play. Qualifications for the club are consistent with the USTA suggested criteria of being able to place medium-paced shots, being able to judge where the ball is going, and sustaining a rally with other players of the same ability. Or, in other words, a 3.0 ranking for those intimately familiar with tennis. There is always room for improvement, and we have a tennis pro to help us with that. Aide’ Smedes provides the Las Raquettes group lessons every Wednesday morning. In addition to Aide’s expert advice, we practice as a team on Thursday mornings and our matches with other teams from the area are held on Fridays. If you are interested in joining a fun group of ladies and would like to compete in the West Valley Women’s Senior Tennis League with other West Valley women with the same interests and abilities, call Vicki Faaborg, team captain, at (602) 918-0501 or Donna Norton, co-captain, at (602) 657-3949.

Golf Course Update Brandon Williams, Superintendent, CB Golf Overseeding is complete and we are looking forward to a great 2013-14 season of golf. We welcome all those returning for the winter. The maintenance team did a great job during the process and we are ready to begin our season of mowing and detailing the course. The crew will spend much of its time focusing on landscape projects now that we’ve completed many of our summer golf course tasks. For those of you golfers, remember that the course

will be cart path, only, until November 18, so the new turf will have a chance to properly establish. My team hopes to continue to improve the course and make Corte Bella Golf Club the centerpiece of the community that all members and residents can be proud of. Of course, I always welcome your comments and suggestions. Cheers to a wonderful season of golf.

CULINARY

What’s for Dinner? Allie Bowling “What’s for dinner?” How often do you say this? When Chuck and I do, the choices are endless. The residents of Corte Bella are blessed with knowing that when we open our fridges or pantries, there’s always going to be something to eat. What if you were among those who may live outside of our gates— who don’t share that option?

I recently had the opportunity, along with a group of locals, to take a tour of the St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance’s main processing facility in Phoenix. Prior to this I knew very little about their operation—just what I saw when I dropped off donations at the Surprise location. What I came away with was entirely unexpected. Started in 1967, St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance is known globally as the world’s first food bank. It distributes food through more than 300 non-profit partner agencies at 400 sites covering two-thirds of Arizona’s 15 counties. The Food Bank is committed to providing food to those struggling with hunger. The agencies receiving food from the Food Bank serve a variety of clients—seniors, families, children and infants—of all colors, faiths and abilities. 1-in-5
