ASSOCIATION
From the Manager’s Desk
Mike Arrington, Corte Bella Country Club Association, Inc. General Manager Tennis, Pickle Ball and Bocce players to catch their breath and observe other matches while doing so. This is especially nice for “home and home” matches when we have other visiting communities here for a tournament. The Lanai also seems to have become a spot for our pet owners to gather in the late afternoon hours to catch up and visit. Others groups took advantage for social gatherings during the heat of the summer and enjoyed. The Anacapa renovation project was next on the schedule with meetings early in the year to choose a designer and select the furnishings and available options. Although there was an established window whereas the Anacapa was scheduled to close for the work to be done, we got out ahead of the project in order to ensure that we were able to open back up as planned. Some of our resident users graciously allowed the rescheduling of their normally scheduled activities so that workers could complete some of the tasks ahead of schedule. This was huge in ensuring the project’s success and prompt completion. The impressions of the newly remodeled restaurant and social hall have been overwhelmingly positive and well received. If you
have not yet seen the finished product, come see your new and improved Anacapa restaurant and social hall to see for yourself. Next on the agenda was the road rehab project, broken into two different efforts beginning with structural repairs then followed by crack sealing and two asphalt seal coats. Street maintenance is always the biggest expense a community ever faces and can be very complex in nature as related to coordination and scope of work. However, this project went about as well as anyone could ever hope. The vendors worked well under the direction of our consultant and all team members communicated effectively, causing the project to go very smoothly, producing an outstanding final product completed on schedule. Immediately after completion of the Anacapa renovation, the expansion of the social hall building was underway. You may have noticed the fenced off area in front of the social hall and wondered what was going on. The social hall is being extended out near sidewalk to increase storage space for all of the equipment necessary to support the Corte Bella event and entertainment operations. The storage space will double in size and provide necessary storage space for tables, chairs, audiovisual equipment as well as other equipment needed to support operations. Adequate storage space is rarely a consideration when a developer constructs amenities to support a community because the real estate is so valuable when considering the foot print of a facility. In this case, the talent of your board and committee members again identified a need and took corrective action to solve yet another problem. Corte Bell really is a community chocked full of talent and experience. As someone involved in the day to day oversight of this community, I am reminded daily of how fortunate we are to have such dedicated and incredible leadership on the job. Let there be no doubt that Corte Bella is an outstanding community as a direct result of the people who reside here. I consider myself very blessed to be a part of something so great.

Since I’ve had the pleasure of managing this wonderful community, much has taken place in the way of improvements. Your Board of Directors has shown extreme diligence in not only taking care of the amenities that exist but also in improving the property. First, there was the construction of the new Lanai that was completed and dedicated in April of this year. The Lanai turned out beautifully and provides a shady area for

A Reminder from Your ARC Regina Shanney-Saborsky Please mark your calendars – ARC will be hosting a presentation on October 15th at 6:00 pm in the Social Hall to highlight major design issues and considerations. We hope to see you there. It will be an opportunity to ask general, or specific, questions of the committee to assist residents in their outdoor landscaping and hardscaping efforts.
approved design. Better safe than mistaken.
In the meantime, over the last few months, during the inspection process ARC has seen a number of projects which were completed but the vendors did not follow approved plans. These projects are currently under review and may require financial expenditures to conform to the original design not to mention disruption at the residence. We are trying to address requirements which will alleviate this issue. As a first step, make sure you have a copy of the plans and understand what ARC has approved or not approved. If you have a question, ask us. Check in periodically with your vendor; ask him if the project is in compliance with the
In this regard, please remember, that enclosed back patios are NOT permitted. There are no variances. If a residence has an enclosed patio, the resident will be asked to remove certain walls or structures. Do not listen to a vendor who assures you that enclosures are permitted.
In addition, due to various factual circumstances, it has been brought to ARC’s attention that some residences may be enclosing back patios without approval. We report these issues to the HOA which investigates on their usual patrols. If, in fact, there is an enclosed patio, a violation is issued by the HOA.
Always, if in doubt whether a wall or screen is permissible, ask. Go to the HOA with an initial inquiry and Heather will query the committee for you. A little homework at the front end will insure satisfaction and approval at the end.
Anacapa Renovation Bill Blake The Anacapa Restaurant renovation is now complete and the restaurant has re-opened. By the time you see this article, the community has inaugurated our “new digs” with a Grand ReOpening Celebration. Here is a brief history of events leading up to the renovation. In January of this year, Interior Designers were interviewed and they made presentations on the project to the Board and residents. In February, the Board approved the selection of DNT Company as designer of choice. Following this selection, the Board and residents were able to review the proposed design and the contract was approved by the Board in February. Open meetings for residents were held to review the design and to make comments on the elements. The final design was approved in March. The renovation work started in May during the restaurant’s down time on Sundays and Mondays. The restaurant was closed August 4 through August 18 and re-opened on Tuesday, August 19.
•
New draperies in the Social Building, staining of all woodwork and new screens for the Anacapa and Social Building.
The improvements involved in the renovation include:
•
New carpeting in the Anacapa and Social Hall.
•
New tables and chairs in the restaurant, Laguna Room and bar area.
•
Restroom renovation including improved lighting, removal of wallpaper and smooth coating of walls.
•
New sliding doors for the Laguna Room.
These are not all of the renovation items. Come and see for yourself and enjoy dining at the newly redesigned Anacapa!
Resident feedback has been very good with high marks for the new updated look and the bright, airy appearance.

Neighborhood Awareness & Safety Committee Report BACK GATE CONCERNS
We are happy to report good news about the back gates. Things are improving and the number of gate crashing incidents has been reduced. The signs on the barrier arms (One vehicle at a time- trucks must use front gate entry on Deer Valley) are a big help. Thank you to all of our residents for assistance in spreading the word to alert vendors and visitors to use the front entrance to Corte Bella. Bill Blake- Board Liaison to the Neighborhood Awareness and Safety Committee

The Speed Minder device is moved on a regular basis throughout the community. The location is changed every week and gives residents an indication of their speed. Reports are sent to the NASC members so they can review and see what the speeds are for various vehicles. We depend on our residents and visitors for cooperation and thank you for safe driving.

ASSOCIATION
A Plan for all Seasons: Strategic Community Plan (SCP) Update A lot of hard work and dedication will soon come to fruition with the expected release of the SCP in October-November. You can appreciate that the SCP is not about any particular initiative or an individual agenda. Rather, the SCP represents this community’s first projection into our future and the
area, which confirms the Assessment Report results showing high agreement about improving course appearance, but divided on ownership or exploring ownership.
Jim Williams, President, Board of Directors strategy needed to carry your vision forward. Corte Bella has never had such a plan- actually a strategy for the HOA (read Corporation). The Board and residents (based on both surveys and feedback) recognize that for a Community of some 3000 residents it is sorely needed. Corte Bella’s SCP Team met during the summer and completed defining Goals and Objectives. You may recall these are needed to facilitate support of Corte Bella’s Vision and Mission statements. The SCP Team also agreed that instead of starting the final SCP process phase – defining strategy and milestones - that residents would be better served by providing additional input on SCP progress to date, specifically the Vision and Mission statements, and the Goals and Objectives. So yes, another survey, – a tried and true means to gather your opinions. This survey was done on the fly, was electronic (online) only, and lasted just four weeks. The survey was not mailed, nor was a reminder post-card sent as done last year. Thus, the cost was minimal ($300 to extend our Survey Monkey agreement to August 2015, and usable for this survey and other survey needs next year). The response from the community was again excellent. Besides answering survey questions, residents gave us 181 comments to ponder. The survey Team report was in progress as this article was being written. When the Team report is completed, it will be announced and posted on the community website. Meanwhile, what follows are some preview details: 491 surveys were received with 24 disallowed (9-frivolous, 8-incomplete, 7-duplicates).The 467 remaining surveys came from 456 different homes. The survey sample size yields a 95 ±4% statistical confidence in results. What this means is that survey answers are strongly representative of the entire community. Table 1 shows reduced raw survey data on goals defined for the five Mission Statements. The associated chart 1 graphically depicts the favorable versus unfavorable responses for the same goals. Residents generally expressed a high level of agreement with the goals. The lowest level of agreement was the Golf Club
Table 1. Goals Supporting the Mission: Survey Data distribution results
Figure 1. Goals Supporting the Mission: Favorable versus Unfavorable results The SCP is a new process for all of us. We have relied on your input from SCP surveys and meetings, and the experience of our Management Company FSR and other communities (that embrace the SCP process) to keep us on track. There have been lessons learned that definitely will help us complete the process, plan implementation and future periodic SCP reviews and update. We look forward to release of the SCP, a presentation to the community, and implementation by the General Manager. If you have any questions about SCP, contact the HOA, or email communication@cortebellacca.com.

Social Hall Storage Expansion Larry Leighton & Tom Mauger, Building & Grounds Committee You may have noticed construction going on outside the Social Hall. This construction is the expansion of the Social Hall storage room. The project was approved by the Board of Directors over a year ago but due to some challenges and Maricopa County permit requirements, the start of construction was delayed until August 25th. The present storage room is woefully undersized to properly store tables, chairs and other items used to support the Anacapa, interest group use of the Social Hall rooms, and Association Event Group events. This results in these items being stored in the Social Hall or outside on the patio and breezeway when not in use and extra labor moving items in and out of storage. When complete, the available storage space will be double what it is today and will effectively serve our current and anticipated storage needs. The expansion will tastefully blend in with the existing building’s interior and exterior character, including a planter and tile backdrop on the south side. A new double door on the west side will provide easy access for larger items. Other than adding an opening on the existing south wall to provide access into the new space, no other changes are planned to the Social Hall. Construction is projected to be completed by the end of October.

In the Loop I have been volunteering at the Musical Instrument Museum or MIM for the past several months and have found it to be a fascinating place. In fact, USA Today readers chose MIM number four in their list of twenty top museums for families in the United States. If you’ve never been there, you should plan to visit in the near future. Bob Rosenberg The museum opened on April 24, 2010 and it is a welcome addition to the cultural opportunities available in Phoenix and Scottsdale. The team member and voluntary team members are dedicated to giving the public, especially the children, a memorable and incredible experience. A little backstory as to the founding of the museum might explain how the MIM came into being. Robert J. Ulrich, the former CEO and chairman emeritus of Target Corporation, is a collector of African art and a world museum enthusiast. He and his friend Marc Felix originated the idea for the MIM after a visit to the Musical Instruments Museum in Brussels, Belgium. He chose Phoenix because it is a major city and tourist attraction. There are other musical instrument museums throughout the world but the MIM is the only one to have instruments representing over
200 countries and territories. Award winning architect Rich Varda, in conjunction with the firm of RSP Architects, was hired to design a museum to fit into the surrounding desert landscape. Every aspect of the museum was thoroughly planned, including the collection of musical instruments that were to be put on display. The result is that building that can be seen while driving along the 101, about two blocks south on Tatum and Mayo Boulevard. There are approximately 6,000 instruments on display out of the total collection of approximately 15,000 instruments. The building is 200,000 square feet and the display area is 75,000 square feet, which is more than most first timers to the museum anticipate. This is not a museum that can be taken in on one visit, so plan to spend several hours at a minimum. The museum accommodates visitors with comfortable, padded benches so you can gather your strength before going on to the next gallery. This is a beautifully designed building that acts as a backdrop to set off the instruments that are on display. The galleries for the countries and territories are on the second floor. The first floor contains the Experience Gallery, Mechanical Music Gallery, Target Gallery, Artists Gallery and the MIM MusicTheater. A more detailed explanation of the museum and what to expect will be in next month’s column. Meanwhile, you can go to www.mim.org to see who will be performing in the theater and more details and pictures of the museum. If you have any questions about the museum contact me at RLRose27@hotmail.com.

You Have a Story to Tell John Eakins Autumn is here. It’s short, you know. But we in Corte Bella are almost all in the autumn or winter of our lives. We hope this season of our lives is lengthy and beautiful, but we don’t have a guarantee. If you haven’t done it already, it is time to record your stories and thoughts for those who are yet in their summers or springs. “What are you talking about?” you ask. “No one wants to hear what I’ve got to say!” After reflecting a moment, you add “And I’m pretty sure I don’t want to tell about some of the things I’ve done!” Okay, that’s fair. You don’t have to bare your soul completely. But many people would like to know your story or your opinions. In some cases, maybe it’s only your family or one of your kids or grandkids. Others’ stories may appeal to people who have done similar things or to those who have no such experiences. For example, tales of war captivate those who went to war and those who did not. In the past few years, I’ve listened to compelling stories told by two families here in Arizona about events in their lives. I put those stories in print for them. One’s family had never heard the story before. Their mother thought they wouldn’t be interested. Not so!
This year, my wife Emilie Tipton and I published an eBook that we wrote about her life in Germany during and after WWII. We e-published it through Smashwords and on Amazon. But you are not obliged to publish your story once you write it. You could stash it away to be found after your winter ends or you can simply hand it to a few selected readers. Not only will you find readers, but also you will be surprised how much you will remember as you record your story. When we started her story, Emilie swore she could remember almost nothing of her childhood and friends. But somehow, we wrote over 300 pages before we came to the end. “Okay. I’m convinced, but I’m not a writer,” you say. Whoa! No lame excuses. Find someone who can help you write it. Or google -- TELL YOUR LIFE STORY. You will be directed to these sites and more: your-life-your-story.com, createyourlifestory.com, storyofmylife.com, pie.midco.net/grammalowe2/tellstory.html, tellyourlifestory.net, and angelinyourinkwell.com. If you’re serious about writing your autobiography, PORA is offering a writer’s course during October and November. If all of that is too daunting, maybe I can help you. Contact me at 507-421-7484, by email at johneakins@msn.com, or come on by and ring the bell at 13105 W Junipero Dr after November 1.

Romance of the Rhine & Mosel Robin Mandell Summer again, and time to leave the hot weather in Arizona and see the world. This August we had a group of 44 people (all but 7 of whom live in Corte Bella) on a two-week cruise on the Rhine and Mosel rivers in northern Europe. We covered a lot of ground - and water. Several of us did some traveling on our own before the river cruise started. A large portion of the group went on a pre-trip extension to Bruge for a few days. Then all of us showed up on the appointed day, August 16, in Antwerp, Belgium. Our group was about a third of the 140-passenger River Melody, one of the many ships owned and run by Grand Circle Travel. About half of this year’s contingent traveled to France with us on Grand Circle last year, and we had high expectations. Could our Program Director, the ship and its staff, and the food be as good as last year? Those doubts quickly disappeared! We had an outstanding young Belgian, Bjorn, as our own guide. He knows his history, is multi-lingual, multi-talented, and is a lot of fun. The ship and all its staff were wonderful, and the food - both quality and presentation - were excellent. Before we get into too many superlatives, though, there was a downside. Much cooler-than-normal temperatures, and quite a bit of rain. Not many of us were prepared for two whole weeks of that. But it didn’t prevent us from seeing all the sights, and it didn’t dampen our spirits. And what a nice change from summer in Arizona.
So why was the trip named “Romance of the Rhine & Mosel?” Think centuries-old castles, knights in shining armor, legends of the Rhine, towns with large market squares and short narrow streets, vineyards started by the Romans climbing the steep hills, transportation available only on foot, a horse, or the river, etc. In visiting five countries (Belgium, Holland, Germany, France, and Switzerland - with the option to see Luxembourg as well) we saw remnants of life in those times that we just can’t imagine living here in this relatively new country. We learned a lot about life in the Middle Ages - no walk in the park. One example: do you know where the tradition of June weddings comes from? It started in the 1500’s when people took their yearly baths in May, when the weather warmed up. By June they were still fairly clean and smelled pretty good, but the brides carried a bouquet of flowers to mask the unpleasant body odors.
A few highlights: •
An invitation from the Mayor to an impromptu festival in the small town of Trittenheim
•
Private wine tasting in an old Roman cellar in Trier
•
Impossibly cute towns like Bernkasel and Riquiwihr
•
Traveling with friends old and new - laughing every day and night.
We had a lot of fun and enjoyed learning and discovering new things together.

Creations By Bonnie Janice Aiken An assortment of beads and some imagination is all it took for Corte Bella resident Bonnie Revelle to get started as a jewelry designer. Just three years ago, Bonnie received an unusual gift from a friend who had recently traveled to Kenya. It was a small bag of Kazuri ceramic beads, hand-made by underprivileged women in Nairobi. Each large Kazuri bead was unique and colorful, truly outstanding, but they weren’t matched. “How could I make a necklace using the Kazuri bead as a focal point? I needed compatible side beads to complete it”, Bonnie said. After a trip to the craft store, some independent study, and obtaining a few more like-colored beads, Bonnie created her first Kazuri bead necklace. Bonnie showed her finished work to friends; many asked her to fashion one for them. After attending numerous trade shows Bonnie expanded her creations to include leather bracelets and many varieties of necklaces using precious stones and other natural materials. With a background in software development and a major in math, creative and abstract thinking was a natural for her. “No one was more surprised than me that a simple gift from a friend would blossom into a thriving jewelry business”, she said. “As I shopped around for interesting new products, I found the web site for ‘Bulahan Beads’. Their beads are made of wood and seeds from the Philippines. They were
sponsoring a design contest, so I decided to enter and my entry won second place!” she said smiling. (see picture). She sells her designs in many West Valley craft shows, at the Scottsdale Arts Festival, and Adelaine Boutique near South Mountain. Her leather bracelets are quite popular and can be custom ordered

Major Jones and his wife Diane founded the Buffalo Soldiers of the Indian Wars 1866 – 1890 organization with the sole purpose of educating the public to the huge and mostly overlooked contribution the Buffalo Soldiers made to the settlement of Arizona as well as the entire southwest. He wore the Garrison uniform the Buffalo Soldiers wore for everyday activities and also brought exhibits of a saddle, sword, rifle, dress uniform and pistol for everyone to see.

Benevilla Offers Meals on Wheels in Corte Bella Many people in the West Valley know Benevilla as an information resource, a volunteer organization, or because they visit Birt’s Bistro. But did you know that Benevilla’s Meals on Wheels program is the only home delivered meals program in Corte Bella and Surprise? The Benevilla Meals on Wheels program also serves Sun City, Sun City West, and El Mirage.
Benevilla’s program offers homedelivered meals that are prepared fresh daily in the Birt’s Bistro catering kitchen. “I’m so grateful that we found Benevilla’s Meals on Wheels program,” states Candy H. “Without it, I’m not sure Mom would still be here.”
“I work as a Kitchen Assistant in Benevilla’s Meals on Wheels program and am responsible for counting out and packing the hot and cold foods for each of the Couriers who deliver these meals to Benevilla’s clients’, said Susan. “I am constantly in awe of the quality and variety of the menus that this professional kitchen

Pink Ribbons and Some Historical Perspective On Fulfilling The Promise Barbara Beshers One day, decades ago, Nancy Brinker made a promise to her sister, Susan G. Komen – to do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise launched a global movement – Susan G. Komen for the Cure - which has invested more than $2 billion to fulfill that promise with programs in more than 30 countries. The genesis of the Phoenix affiliate was similar to that of the original organization. In 1992, three members of the Junior League of Phoenix, after losing one of their friends to the disease, joined forces with Banner Health (known then as Samaritian Health Systems) to bring the Race for the Cure to our city. The participants ran the first race in 1993 and in 1999 the Phoenix office was officially formed in October of that year. The Susan G. Komen Phoenix Race for the Cure is the signature fundraising event for Komen Central and Northern Arizona (Komen CAN AZ). The race has been run in Phoenix for 22 years and occurs this year on October 12th in downtown Phoenix.
And as personal aside, I’m a one-year survivor. I am grateful to 21st Century Oncology/Arizona Breast Surgeon Specialists for their care, saving my life, and providing the best customer service to our community. They will be participating as sponsors and walkers at the Oct 12th walk. I will be donating hand-sewn breast cancer teddy bears to be given to patients and survivors. Please spread the word – be proactive with your health and remember – the race is on… join it.

From Your CB Family and Friends The article below was sent to us for use in the magazine by long time Corte Bella resident Henry Bleile, and we thought that their story deserved to be published verbatim, showing that romance is still alive and kicking during the “golden years”. “On August 3, 2014 Henry married Dr. Fang Ge, in a small, family only, wedding held at the Silver Sky Chapel in Las Vegas, NV. Fang and Henry met in October 2012. Henry was in China to help his best friends (Brian and Ruihua), celebrate their recent marriage. Brian and Ruihua were married in Maryland, but wished to celebrate with family and friends in China, who hadn’t been able to attend their wedding. Fang and Henry were introduced at a luncheon with Ruihua’s professional colleagues and classmates. After the celebrations. Henry stayed to tour Beijing. His friends’ colleagues, including Fang, took turns guiding him around Beijing. After returning to the USA, Fang and Henry corresponded. In 2013 Fang visited Henry on a trip to see her son (who was studying at the University of Maryland). This led to vacations in both the

Thoughts from the Corte Bella Golf Club We would like to encourage anyone who might have a past or current interest in seeing what the game is all about, to visit the golf course pro shop and meet the friendly staff that we introduced in the last Corte Bella Times issue. If you are new to the game I would like to make it more approachable by sharing some tips on how to get started. Jeff Stuart, Assistant General Manager Corte Bella Golf Club Get a lesson...or five! You’ve probably been to the driving range with your friends who are golfers, and that’s how you decided you wanted to get into the sport correct? That’s a great introduction to the game, however if you want to start learning the basic mechanics of the golf swing, you’ll want to take a lesson from a teaching professional (like we have on our staff). I suggest first setting up an individual lesson, where we can go over the basics such as grip, stance, posture, and swing mechanics. Don’t fall into the temptation to allow your friends to teach you. While their intentions are good, they will do your golf swing more harm than good. Golf professionals know how to teach a golf swing, that’s why they are professionals. Get some lessons and learn properly. I can’t stress this enough. If you plan to take lessons, the pro shop has rental clubs you can borrow for the first few lessons. It makes sense to find out if you like golf and get the pro’s input before investing any money in clubs. Buy a used set of golf clubs. This does not have to be a full set; just a few clubs will do (3 wood, 5, 7, 9 iron, pitching wedge/sand wedge and a putter. Used clubs caution: If the grips don’t fit your hand, we can re-grip them with a comfortable fitting grip.
affecting distance? Practicing at the range lets you find these things out without costing strokes. As you progress, it is vital to work on your short game (putting and pitching).Think about it. It is useless being able to hit the ball 200 yards, depending how strong you are you should be able to drive the ball 250, and not have a clue what to do when you get to the green. In an average round, you will use your driver 12-15 times, depending on the course. On every single course you will use your putter about 30 times in a round, depending on your ability. The short game is the key to a lower handicap.
Etiquette & Rules - Take some time to learn the rules of golf... and the etiquette, as this is just as important as being able to hit the ball 300 yards. The game of golf is about honesty, honor and respect, not just hitting a ball around a grassy park. You can get a copy of the official rules at the USGA website. Keep it in your bag and study it so you know the rules for any particular situation you may find yourself in on the course. As for etiquette, these are just common sense issues more than anything. Don’t walk in other peoples putting lines because it can disturb the grass and make putts go offline. Don’t talk when others are hitting. Don’t stand directly behind or in front of a player who’s swinging a club. Always dress appropriately and according to golf course rules. Our staff is always there for any questions on rules or etiquette and is always happy to help a beginner learn. Use the driving range a few times before you head out onto the course. Your aim is to be more confident in your club and shot selection, knowing the distances and average trajectory of the clubs you use is essential. Also, using the driving range before a round will give you an idea of how the weather is affecting your shot. Is it windy? Is the humidity making the ball heavy and

Here are some basic tips as you explore the game of golf: •
Before taking a shot, look around, and make sure that there is nothing you could hit or collide with while you are taking a shot, especially golf bags, trees, and people!
•
Have respect for your fellow players. Never talk while they are making a stroke, or comment on their style of play or swing.
•
When you are starting out, use recycled golf balls that you can get in bulk. They are usually quite cheap. They are excellent if you tend to lose a lot of balls.
•
Make sure your cell phone is either off or on silent while on the golf course.
•
Don’t forget to stretch before playing/practicing, greater range of motion usually means longer golf shots.
•
Focus on your putting, roughly half of your strokes will be putts, so learning to putt pays big dividends; there’s a reason the pros say “drive for show, putt for dough.”

Welcome Back to Cbtc Snowbirds Vicki Faaborg, Member at Large, Corte Bella Tennis Club A hearty, down-home, CBTC welcome to our Corte Bella residents! Some significant tennis club changes have taken place since last spring. TENNIS BALL MACHINE: We now have a tennis ball machine that is easily accessible at the tennis courts. The machine is located in a cabinet next to Court 5, just outside the west side fence. To use the tennis ball machine, please bring your ID and pay a fee of $2.00 per hour and the staff at the Fitness Center desk will give you the cabinet key. They will return your ID upon the receipt of the key when you are done. MAINTENANCE: The courts received somewhat of a facelift when the new nets and windscreens were installed. We are in the process of replacing some of the scorekeepers, which have deteriorated over the last 10 years. Our tennis courts are well maintained and players are very respectful of the courts. Other than finding our scorekeeper balls missing, the courts have been nothing less than perfect. Keep in mind that the courts will be washed on these specific Sundays : October 19, November 16, and December 21.
SUMMER SOCIAL: The CBTC held a summer social on July 5 at the home of Ed and Colleen Miller. The social was called “Celebrate Summer With Your Tennis Friends”. Ron Watts and Mark Sivakoff each won CBTC President, Joel Piaskowski, presenting CBTC a gift basket from AJ’s. member, Ron Watts, with raffle prize at the summer social Our talented president, Joel Piaskowski, put together a slide show with photos of past tournaments for guests to enjoy throughout the evening. A good time was had by all and a big hearty CBTC “thank you” to the Millers for hosting. If you are interested in playing tennis and/or becoming a member of the Corte Bella Tennis Club, please contact any of the Corte Bella Tennis Club board members listed below.
COMPUTER ONLINE CHECK-IN SITE: We encourage all players to reserve court time using our online check-in site http:// holdmycourt.com/reserve2/cortebella. The site is very user friendly. The Corte Bella Tennis Club can track the use of the tennis courts for statistical purposes by use of this site and it avoids players going to the courts only to find that they are full. THE LANAI: The Lanai is finished at last. It has been very beneficial to tennis and pickle ball players. The Lanai can also be reserved for other events. Please check with the Fitness Center for information if you would like to reserve the use of the Lanai. SHARED USE OF COURT #5: The agreement between the CBTC and the Pickle Ball Club to share the use of Court #5 has been running very smoothly. When one checks in online, you can see when each organization has use of Court #5 and then you can schedule accordingly.

CBTC “Cooks Up” Happy Hour at the Anacapa Vicki Faaborg, CBTC Member-At-Large The old saying, “It’s five o’clock somewhere” suggests approval of a happy hour at four o’clock, which is what the CBTC took to heart on August 28, 2014, at the newly renovated Anacapa Restaurant. The recipe for success? A little thyme (oops, I mean,
“time”), add some delicious appetizers, and mix with refreshing cocktails. Serve immediately to a fun and lively CBTC membership. This was our end-of-summer social and all who attended had a good time. Future tournaments and social events are being planned for October 25 and for December 6. Please watch your emails for details.

Pickleball News Pickleball Committee Our pickleball club is gearing up to start a new season with new interest as we welcome back the snow birds. This summer members have spent time playing at Traditions and Trilogy along with playing here at our facility. The addition of the Lanai has been very well received by the members and guests while playing. It has provided a great place to escape the sun and to enjoy fellowship. Once the weather cools down we will begin having clinics for beginners and hopefully have some training for specific tasks if there is enough interest with the members. Tournaments will begin with the first one being held at Trilogy October 17-19. We have several members that will be playing so come out and support them. Hope to see you on the courts!!!

CULINARY
“Happy October” from the Anacapa Looking forward to Fall and cooler weather. There is much to do and see here at Corte Bella. Many of our residents will be returning, checking out our new look and with that new menus will be in place with emphasis on choice, simplicity, and quality.
Executive Chef Dan Haywood, Anacapa Restaurant Throughout the year many of our patrons and residents offer many opinions and input on food choices and styles. We take what our residents and guests are looking for seriously, and implement them as we can.
So if your favorite dish is suddenly off the menu, we invite you to try new experiences, and also to let us know so we can bring it back as a special, or as a menu item at a later date. Our October German Fest Buffet will be October 19. This will be followed in November by our Stuffed Italian Cooking Class on November 7. Our Thanksgiving Brunch on November 27th signifies the start of the holiday season. We will be having lots of social events, parties, and holiday gatherings in December, so make sure to save the dates on your calendars and keep looking for upcoming information. One of the recipes most often requested is our Butternut Squash Soup. We have given it out before, but here it is again for the fall season. Enjoy, and from all of us here at Anacapa, Happy Eating!!!!
Butternut Squash Soup Makes ¾ gallon (8-10 servings) • 5# Butternut Squash, Peeled, Seeded, Large Dice • 2 ea Granny Smith Apples, Peeled, Cored, Diced • 1 White Onion, Peeled, Diced • 2 Cloves Garlic, Chopped • 2 cups Apple Cider or Apple Juice • 8 cups Chicken Stock or Broth • 2 oz Cider Vinegar • 1 oz. oil • 1 tsp dry Sage • S&P to taste
In a medium sauce pot, heat oil and sauté garlic and onion until softened and shiny, about 5 minutes. Add butternut squash and apples. Saute for 10 minutes until squash starts to soften and break down. Add apple cider, sage, vinegar and stock and bring to a boil. Cover and adjust heat to just a slight simmer for 30 – 45 minutes. Remove from heat. At this point the soup needs to be pureed. You can do this 1 of 2 ways. Use a blender, pureeing in small batches. (Never blend hot liquids in a blender more than 1/3 full), or with a Blender stick, which is very handy, as you can blend the soup in the pot you cooked it in. If the soup is too thick, simply add a little more stock. (You can also use a little water.) Return the soup to pot. Add Salt and Pepper to taste.
