ASSOCIATION

The Basics of HOA Residency Dear Corte Bella Residents: Did you know that your HOA better known as Corte Bella Country Club Association, is simply the smallest and most basic version of a democratic society? The hierarchy looks like this; HOA, town, Mike Arrington, Corte Bella Country Club Association, Inc. General Manager city, county, state, federal government in that order. Just like any of the aforementioned organizations, the HOA must have governance (Board of Directors), laws (Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions) and Taxes (assessments) in place in order to operate effectively. The HOA is simply the smallest version of democracy. By virtue of owning property within the legal boundaries of the HOA you are an automatic member and cannot opt out as long as you own that property. There is an annual election involving candidates with voting and term restrictions for candidates. Anyone can run for office (seat on the board). If you are not a board member, you are a constituent of the directors. Although volunteers, the directors serve at your pleasure, just like any other elected official would. All voting is done by majority rule. HOA boards typically hire a professional management company to manage the day-to-day affairs of the HOA. The management company serves at the pleasure of the Board of Directors. As the board makes decisions, the management company or manager is responsible for executing the decisions made by the board. Committees are made up of resident homeowners like yourself and are appointed by the board to serve at the pleasure of the

board. Committees are sometimes permanent and perform an ongoing needed function, as does the Architectural Committee for instance. Others are temporary and contribute by taking on a one-time function such as event planning or a project. These committees are formed and then disbanded when the need is no longer. Your HOA assessments are really no different than the taxes you pay to the city, state or federal government. These funds are used by the HOA to maintain common property like streets and parks, compensate service providers like management, landscaping, insurance providers, security, etc. and to address any other needs of the community. The Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions better known as the CCR’s are not much different than the existing city ordinances or state laws and federal laws that you are already subject to. Typically they are only more area specific and in fact, CCR’s are based on existing laws. CCR’s may not be less stringent than existing laws in the hierarchy of law but may be more stringent. HOA’s have been around long enough now that it has been determined which rules protect your property value as a homeowner/association member. When CCR’s and design guidelines are written and recorded for a community, they are all pretty much the same based on years of study and trial. They are already known to protect property value before put in place. This is not a test… HOA’s are not for everyone and obviously it is not mandatory for anyone to live in an HOA. It is a personal choice that should be given great consideration ahead of time. Those who put in the time to research and embrace the lifestyle tend to be much happier residents. Those who resist the rules and do not agree with the communal lifestyle will probably never be happy and content residing in an HOA.

Arc Is Looking for Committee Members and Volunteers Regina Shanney-Saborsky The Architectural Review Committee will have several open positions in April and is soliciting applications from all residents to join the Committee. If interested, obtain an application from the HOA office. Applications must be submitted by March 1st to the HOA to be considered for the position. All are welcome. Also, ARC is looking for additional volunteers to assist the Committee in the post-project inspection process. If interested,

8 | CB Times | The Official Community Magazine of Corte Bella

leave your name and contact information with the HOA office. This is not a Committee position – as a volunteer you would work along with the Committee members in the review process of completed architectural/landscaping projects for compliance with the approved design. A checklist would be provided to assist in the endeavors. All help is appreciated. Any questions, contact me at rsaborsky@cox.net.

Board Talk: Your Annual Meeting and Directors Election Election Season is here – and that means the Annual Membership Meeting and the Board of Directors election. This is probably the most important meeting of the Homeowners Association (HOA). The meeting is significant enough to warrant specific coverage in Arizona Revised Statutes (ARS) under provisions in Title 10 Non-Profit Corporations and Title 33 Planned Communities. Our governing documents also cover Annual Meeting requirements.

Jim Williams, President, Board of Directors

By the time you read this, you should have received your election ballot package, including the materials each candidate submitted (usually a candidate letter and resume). If you have not received your ballot package by 8 February, then contact the HOA Office for help (623-328-5068, or email either the Administrative Supervisor Heather at HChavez@cortebellacca.com or the GM at Michael.Arrington@fsresidential.com). The four candidates in alphabetical order are Walt Kearns, Larry Leighton, Donna Norton and Jim Williams. Two Meet & Greet events were held 22 and 28 January. Residents listened to the candidates, asked the candidates whatever was on their mind, and were able to meet with the candidates one on one. A few Ballot reminders: First, make sure your address is on the Ballot envelope. If your address is not on the envelope, then your vote will not be counted. Second, make sure you correctly mark the Ballot per the instructions. Third, make sure your Ballot arrives at the HOA Office by 12:00 noon, 2 Mar 2015. If your ballot is not turned in at the HOA on time, then you can still bring your ballot to the Annual meeting to be included in the election count. And finally, most important, if you haven’t mailed or dropped off your ballot to the HOA, then please do so. It is your Community, and your voice certainly deserves to be heard. Here are some important annual meeting and election related dates: 30 Jan: Notice of Annual Membership Meeting and Ballot package mailed. 13 Feb: GM selects vote counters and inspectors. 02 Mar: Ballots due at HOA Office 12:00 noon (Office closes at noon to prepare for meeting) 02 Mar: Annual Meeting held starting at 6:00PM. Election results announced.

31 Mar: GM verifies that Election Policy requirements have been met. 01 Apr: Organizational Meeting held and elected Directors are seated. The foremost purpose of an Annual Meeting is to elect Members to the Board of Directors. There are other significant reasons for having the meeting such as conducting business, for example, to amend Association documents and approving the previous year’s minutes. More importantly, since this is a meeting of the Members, then the Members have the opportunity to address the Association. Members in past years have provided Committee reports and community updates on various projects. Members can report/discuss, their concerns, satisfaction or experiences – good or not – on topics like parking issues, how Association money is spent, etc. If any resident wants to speak or provide a presentation on a topic, be sure to let the HOA or GM know as soon as possible, so time can be allocated. There will also be an open forum so members can simply make comments or ask questions. The Annual Meeting will be held 2 March 2015, 6-8:00PM at the Social Building. Reminder announcements will be made on the website and sent by email. Be sure to let the HOA know by 13 February if you want to be a ballot inspector or counter. HOA Staff and volunteers will be there 30-60 minutes earlier (time to be announced) to help with early registration of Ballots. The past year has been great for Corte Bella. I believe that after this meeting and election, we can look forward to another great year. Hope to see you there to kick it off!

Financial Summary – Twelve Months Ended December 31, 2014 (Unaudited) Charlie Hall, Finance Committee Co-Chairperson 2014

Results of Operations

For the 12 month period ending December 31, 2014, excluding reserve contributions, we realized a net operating surplus of $20,000. This was $52,000 favorable compared to the budgeted deficit of $32,000. The amounts are based on our preliminary 2014 financial results and are subject to year-end closing adjustments by FSR as well as our annual audit. Following is a brief discussion of departmental results and significant variances compared to budget: Administration – $ 1,840,000 net surplus, $25,000 favorable – Higher late fee income was offset by lower gate entry device income. Legal expense, audit & tax fees, gate card expense and contingency costs were under budget. Facilities – $1,174,000 total expense, met budget – Salaries & wages and related payroll costs, telephone, gas and building maintenance costs were significantly over budget. This was offset by significantly lower water and sewer expense due to reduced water usage during the heavy rains in August and September and improved water management practices. Guardhouse – $170,000 total expense, $9,000 favorable – Costs for gate guard services were higher than budget but were offset by lower than budget spending on printing and forms, supplies, and equipment and gate repairs. HOA Events – $1,000 surplus, $1,000 favorable – Revenue was higher than budget due to a greater number of events, offset by the related additional expense. Landscape – $366,000 total expense, $15,000 favorable – Irrigation repair, plant replacement and storm damage costs were under budget. Restaurant – $13,000 surplus, $14,000 unfavorable – Revenue was favorable overall for food, liquor and wine. Food costs, salary & wage expense for the front-of-house and kitchen and the related payroll burden and benefit expense were higher than budget. Repair and maintenance expense exceeded budget due to misting system repairs which were unbudgeted. Spa – $14,000 surplus, $4,000 favorable – Revenue from facials and phytomer products was under budget, offset by lower related costs of the services and lower expense for licenses & permits and facility supplies.

After cumulative costs exceed the $62,400 carryover amount, painting expense will be charged to the paint maintenance fund.

Reserve Funds

Repair and replacement fund – The fund balance decreased $415,000 from the 2013 year end amount. Major projects included street repair and resealing work totaling $427,000 and the Anacapa remodel, including social hall carpet, totaling $244,000. Capital projects – The fund balance increased $8,000 from the 2013 year end amount. Reserve fund fees from home re-sales, used to fund capital improvements, were $32,000 higher than budget. Major projects were the Lanai at $38,000 and the Social Hall storage expansion at $60,000.

Summary

On the operating side, our financial performance for 2014 was favorable, attributable primarily to lower administrative expenses, lower water and sewer costs, lower landscape related expenses and the restaurant operation which achieved a surplus for the third year in a row. Reserve expenditures in 2014 were significant due to street repairs and the restaurant remodel project. Our reserve account remains adequately funded for future expenditures other than for street and road repairs. One of the challenges facing the community is integrating the revised expenses for future street repairs into our reserve fund analysis, which is the subject of an ongoing review. During 2015 a second, independent engineering study will be completed to help us determine estimated future street repair costs. Our cash position is sufficient to meet our operating needs. From an investment standpoint, we continue to maintain our conservative investment strategy to minimize risk and ensure liquidity, while seeking yield improvement opportunities. Details on all financial statements can be found on the Corte Bella website under HOA>Community documents>Financials. Please feel free to contact any member of the Finance Committee regarding questions or suggestions.

Fitness – $167,000 deficit, $13,000 favorable – Personal trainer income was higher than budget but was offset by higher fitness instructor and personal trainer expense. Salary and wage expense and related payroll costs were significantly under budget. Paint Maintenance and Granite Replacement – $29,000 surplus, met budget – Actual painting costs of $52,000 were charged to the prior year carryover amount in the reserve fund.

Homemade Salad Dressing: 5 Key Elements for Success Whether you want a simple vinaigrette or creamy variation, all dressings come down to these 5 elements: 1. Oil: Don’t use that $35 bottle of extra virgin olive oil you picked up at the specialty shop. The high end oils

Executive Chef Dan Haywood, Anacapa Restaurant are usually for finishing and the delicate qualities will get lost. Instead, use a good quality olive oil or neutral- tasting alternative like canola, grape seed or safflower. Combined with a bit of sesame oil or nut oil, you’ve got a dressing you won’t find in the store. How much oil do you need? Traditionally, the oil to acid ratio is 3 to 1, but I prefer an equal mix.

2. Acid: The go-to vinegars are balsamic, red wine and white wine. Want a change of pace? Try champagne or sherry vinegar. Alternatively, you can substitute some or all of the vinegar with freshly squeezed lemon juice. A splash of lime juice goes well with citrus-based salads. 3. Sweet: To take the edge off the acid, add a touch of sugar. Ordinary white sugar will do, but you’ll add more flavor with honey, maple syrup, apple juice, frozen orange juice concentrate or even jam. 4. Salt: A generous pinch or two is usually enough. If salt tolerances vary at your table, season individual servings with finishing salt. 5. Aromatics: Minced fresh herbs, shallots, citrus rind, black pepper and/or garlic aren’t mandatory but add flavor and variety. Common salad herbs include basil, thyme, tarragon, cilantro, mint, parsley and dill. Mix and match as you please.

Cheers to 2015! CB Events Group: Jolene Piaskowski, Colleen Miller, Donna Folan

With the theme of “Ebony & Ivory” for the Corte Bella New Year’s Eve Celebration event, the table settings and decorations in both the Anacapa and the social hall were set up with perfection. The dreary weather did nothing to dampen the spirits of 104 Corte Bella residents and guests who turned out to ring in the New Year. The evening began with a cocktail reception in the Santa Barbara Room. Attendees enjoyed great conversation along with delicious hors d ‘oeuvres, and perhaps-even some New Year’s resolutions were made and shared. Attendees then went into the Anacapa for a delicious fourcourse dinner. Executive Chef Dan Haywood, Food & Beverage Manager, Fred Hernandez, and their staff, once again surpassed expectations and did an exceptional job. Palates were satisfied with a first course of chilled shrimp with grilled vegetables, followed by a second course of Endive Salad with toasted walnuts. The entrée course of either a Pan Seared Filet Mignon or Macadamia Crusted Grouper was enjoyed by all. The last course was a decadent Belgian Mousse with fresh berries and Chef Dan’s special homemade Pecan Brittle. After dinner, attendees moved back to the Santa Barbara room for an evening of dancing to the sounds of D.J Ray Mar (Ray Martinez). For 40 years, Ray has been leaving a lasting impression across Phoenix. He is one of only 13 members of The American Disc Jockey Hall Of Fame. Along with HOA Board members Larry Leighton and his wife Kay, Mike McVeigh and his wife Lynne and all the attendees, the dance floor was packed all night long. Not surprisingly, at midnight, the vast majority of people were still on hand to ring in the New Year with party hats, horns, noisemakers and a boisterous “Happy New Year!”

Sam and Sue Pechkurow, Mike and Lynne McVeigh The following are just a few of the comments from residents who attended. Fred and Beverly Wagner: “Our friends, Larry and Linda Strauss from Scottsdale joined us to ring in another Corte Bella New Year’s Eve. They remarked about what a wonderful, welcoming and fun community we have. From the food to the service to the DJ, the party was first rate.” Jeff and Pam Ablin: “What a terrific New Year’s Eve party! We had a great time and look forward to the event again next year.” Sam and Sue Pechkurow: “The New Year’s event was a very elegant evening. The food was excellent and the dancing following the dinner was nonstop until midnight. Looking forward to next year.” We would like to extend a very special thanks to all the volunteers who helped make this special event simply spectacular.

To Corte Bella from the Peskins Regarding the 2014 Pet Drive Rescue Pets want to thank the Corte Bella residents that helped donate over 200 pounds of pet food and treats to help feed them while awaiting their forever homes. Corte Bella Players Presents… Regina Shanney-Saborsky Are you ready Corte Bella for an evening of fun-filled shtick – no realism permitted in the Social Hall, just cliches’ as the Corte Bella players take a look at the film noir of the 40’s with “THE PROTOLOGIST’S DAUGHTER”, stock Hollywood fun written by Edward Crosby Wells. So save these dates – April 24th and 25th and join your resident theatrical troupe for an evening of fun and games. Combine the Baroness Von Cobra, a “dragon lady” if we ever saw one, and her pet snake Adolph, with a mansion high atop the Hollywood Hills. Add a nest of spies joined by a gorilla and several feisty servants clever in their antics, to the mix. We have the secret agent from the Allied Secret Service (oh dear) and his wannabe movie star girlfriend, Velma, foiling the attempts of the Baroness and her crew to locate a secret weapon for the 3rd Reich. The performance will be a bit different from the past – the same cast of CB characters with some new additions but we are passing on dinner this Spring. Desserts and coffee at intermission with an open cash bar throughout the evening.

And, if you are like the members of our troupe and have an inner child who needs to express itself or a creative bent just waiting to be discovered, consider joining us whether on stage or back stage, whether acting, or coaching or costumes or sets. And for those who auditioned last month – thank you and we hope this welcomes you aboard. See you in April in the Hollywood Hills.

Tuscany in Winter Robin Mandell My husband Michael likes to surf around the web for intriguing travel opportunities. In October he found one: spend a week in Tuscany in the off (winter) season. Airfare from Phoenix, rental car, six nights’ hotel, and breakfast every day for one price - no set schedule; you see what you want to see. We enticed two other couples to join us, and off we went: Dec. 4-11. Some folks thought we were crazy, but it actually worked out well. The flights were not full - lots of room to spread out and relax. The weather was great. OK, it was a little chilly (40-50s), but we were prepared. And we had two spectacular sunny days to enjoy Florence and the towns of the Cinque Terre.

We were in one central location that allowed us to easily visit: our base town of Montecatini Therme, Pisa, Lucca, Florence, San Gimignano, the Chianti wine region (Castellini in Chianti and Greve in Chianti), and two of the five towns of the Cinque Terre on the coast of the Ligurian Sea. There were no lines! In summer, between the regular tourists and day-trippers off cruise ships, it is nearly impossible to get into the key sights, especially in Florence. You have to book in advance - and pay for the privilege. There was no one in the ticket line to see David at The Accademia, and it cost only Euros 8. Booking tickets in advance had a price on-line of Euros 23! No wait for a table for dinner, either. And the food and wine were as fabulous as always. So next time you see a good opportunity to jump over to Europe for a great price off season - say “Si!”

In the Loop This month’s article is dedicated to an item that is seldom used, rarely thought about but very important under the right circumstances. SPARE TIRE! Assuming you are lucky enough to own one.

drive further than seventy-five miles? When was the last time that you had the air pressure checked? In all the years I have been driving and having my car serviced I have yet to have a mechanic or anyone else check the pressure in the spare tire.

Car manufacturers used to provide a full size spare tire that was the equivalent of any one of the four tires you drove on. One day, under the pretext of saving weight, they decided to provide you with a doughnut for a spare.

The doughnuts function at a higher pressure than your regular tires and seem to lose air more readily. You can check the required air pressure for your tires on the little plate on the frame inside the driver’s door. My car tires take thirty two pounds but my doughnut takes sixty pounds. I have checked it and found it to be down twenty to twenty five pounds of pressure. This may seem like a trivial item but see how you feel when you have a flat tire in the middle of nowhere in particular and find your spare tire is non-functional.

Bob Rosenberg Some manufacturers have gone a step further and provide you with only a can that is supposed to inflate your tire and seal the leak. The only thing missing is a note from them saying good luck and check your insurance in case you need a tow. Let’s assume you do have a doughnut for a spare. Did you know you are not supposed to drive over fifty miles an hour and not

Tire pressures change as temperature change so try to check your tires at least once a month. I know, I should follow my own advice. Always check the pressure when the tire is cold because the pressure rises when driving. Having some sort of air compressor, even a small one that operates off the car’s battery is not a bad idea. I found a great tire gauge called Accu Gage that lets you read the pressure as the tire is being filled.

Got a Group? Use Stan Sacha, Corte Bella Computer Club Our January Computer Club Meeting reviewed a free online group management and collaboration tool called Trello. This application is used by the Technology Committee to organize important documents of the committee, as well as a way to keep projects focused and moving forward by managing its “to-do” lists. Because Trello is so simple to use, it’s ideal for committees, clubs and workgroups in Corte Bella. Trello’s roots go back to Japan. It uses a paradigm for managing projects known as “kanban”, a method that was popularized by Toyota in the 1980’s. Projects are represented by Boards (think chalkboards), which contain Lists. Lists contain Cards. Cards should progress from one list to the next. It’s all very visual and simple. Just like sticky notes on a chalkboard, you can move virtual cards around for everyone to see using the computing device of your liking. It is very touchscreen-oriented, so it works quite well when using it from tablets. Trello is very flexible, and yet intentionally constrained. It’s not meant to store everything long-term. It’s meant to keep you focused on the things that are important to your group right now, rather than way of building a backlog of items that you’re never going to work on.

It’s really hard to dislike Trello. It’s easy to learn. It’s easy to implement. It’s not onerous to groups like ours. It integrates with just about everything. It has a large fan base of over 5 million already, and it has even spawned third party extensions. If you missed the meeting, check out the notes at our club website (http://CorteBellaClub.org/notes). If there’s enough interest, I’ll hold special classes for Corte Bella groups that want to use it. If you’re an official Corte Bella committee or club, the Technology Committee is particularly interested in hearing from you. We would like to help with the promotion and administration of this technology in our community using best practices. Drop me a line (coordinator@CorteBellaClub.org). See you at the next meeting!

Corte Bella Vets Salute Disabled American Veterans Golf Tournament Larry Leighton, Corte Bella Vets Chairman The Corte Bella Vets sponsored a golf tournament at the Corte Bella Golf Club on January 24th. Based on our success, we plan on having an annual golf tournament with the proceeds being donated to a military-oriented charity here in Arizona. Tournaments are open to anyone who wants to have a fun afternoon and make a donation to a worthy cause. This year’s event raised over $12,000 for the Disabled American Veterans, Department of Arizona. Tom Asmussen, Corte Bella Vets Charities Committee Chairman and Tournament Director said getting an event like this organized for the first time took a lot of extra effort but it will be “easier next year”. Tom wants to thank everyone who helped organize and manage the event including the Corte Bella Golf Club staff, John Jackson, Adam Erspamer, Lisa Sanchez and the other Corte Bella Vets members who spent many hours soliciting for tee box sponsors and prizes and monitoring the on-course contests.

Tom kicked off the event’s opening ceremonies with the Sun City West American Legion Post #94 Honor Guard posting the Colors. Members of the Corte Bella Vets posted the Service Flags. Mr. Ira Gedan sang our National Anthem and God Bless America was sung by the Corte Bella Singers. We’d like to thank everyone, especially the Disabled American Veterans, who played in the tournament. A special thanks goes out to our sponsors and prize donors. We are looking forward to continued support from our friends and neighbors for next year’s tournament. The Corte Bella Vets mission is to “Foster patriotism and good will toward the military community within Corte Bella and support deserving military oriented charities.”

Aarp Safe Driver Course Robin Mandell When was the last time you took a driver’s refresher course? If you can’t recall, it’s probably time! Driving is definitely not what it used to be; with the ever-changing road conditions, traffic laws, and car technology, it might seem a bit challenging. This is why it’s important to keep your driving skills up to date in order to be safe on the road. AARP offers a driver course designed for mature adults to refresh their driving skills, road knowledge, and safety precautions. We invite you to take advantage of the Smart Driver course to brushup on your driving skills. By taking a driver safety course you’ll learn the current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques, and how to operate your vehicle more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. In addition, you’ll learn: • • • • •

How to maintain a proper following distance The safest way to change lanes and make turns at intersections The effects of medications on driving Reducing driver distractions such as eating, smoking, and cell phone use Proper use of safety belts, air bags, antilock brakes, and new technology found in cars today

Traveling Light John Eakins A few years back, my wife Emilie got a travel tip from a Viennese gentleman with whom she was dancing in a parking lot in Italy! He said that no city beats Vienna for Christmas! With our air miles soon to expire, Emilie remembered this tidbit and booked our trip to Austria for early December. We had a great time! It’s easy walking the historic center of Vienna (Wien in German). Beautiful buildings line every block. Most people spoke English, a few spoke quite well. After a nearly sleepless pond crossing, we landed first in Berlin and with a ten-hour layover before our flight to Vienna, we took a city bus from the Berlin airport to the city center and found tour buses nearby. The day was rainy, but we saw the famous things such as Checkpoint Charlie and the Brandenburg Gate. Being a hop-on/hop-off bus, we hopped off at a Christmas Market and had lunch in a small restaurant, and enjoyed our afternoon sitting with two local women. We bussed back to the airport, flew to Vienna, and bussed to central Vienna. After directions from several locals, including an escort by two young women, we arrived at Pension Kraml. Being awake for 30 hours is taxing, but after we got a good eleven-hour sleep, jetlag never bothered us. We spent nine nights at this comfortable, friendly pension, located one mile from the historic center of Vienna. Fortified by scrumptious breakfasts, we walked there most mornings. We had a variety of choices for coffee houses and restaurants with 17th century atmosphere for meals, coffee, or dessert. We lined up at the popular Café Mozart and Café Sacher, for Sacher Torte, of course, as tourists must. And we stuck our heads into the overcrowded Café Central for pictures only. But we most enjoyed Café Sperl, located on the way to the pension. We stopped there three times to have coffee and food with the locals. Street vendors sold us tickets for a Wednesday bus tour to Melk Abbey and for Saturday night’s Mozart and J. Strauss concert at Schönbrunn Palace. Monday we happened upon both Mozart’s Orphan Mass in the Jesuit Church and the Magic Trumpet Advent Concert (Mozart, Bach, and Haydn) at Annakirche—both sumptuously Baroque. Tuesday evening we took in R. Strauss’s Arabella at the Vienna State Opera. All were delightful with full, rich sound in each venue. Vienna is truly alive with music. Of course Wiener Schnitzels are advertised everywhere tourists might be. We stopped in at Gräfin Vom Naschmarkt for them Sunday evening. Fortunately only I ordered them, and Emilie ordered only a salad. Six large schnitzels came in my order—two pork and four chicken, deep-fried just right, and enough for us both. Service and atmosphere were great too. Tuesday we took the subway, train, and bus out from Vienna central to Neustift am Walde to visit the Wolff Heuriger-Weingut. A Heuriger is a small winery that sells directly to customers who

come into the restaurant or tavern. Most close during the winter, but Wolff is larger, well known, and open all year. Lucky for us! Wednesday we welcomed the change of being on our bus tour through Wachau Valley to Melk Abbey, celebrating its 1000th anniversary. It was economical and timesaving too. We stopped at historic Krems and Dürnstein villages along the Danube that were inconvenient or expensive to travel to on our own. And we saw Dürnstein Castle, which held Richard the Lionheart while he awaited ransom. Thursday we traveled by subway and bus to Budapest, Hungary. Not wanting to take the 7:00AM bus or to stay overnight, we had only five hours. Not many people spoke English, but with a recommendation from an American that Emilie asked on the street, we found our way to a fine meal—including Hungarian Goulash Soup—at neighborhood restaurant Kiskakukk. Evening views of the Parliament Building and of Buda across the Danube were breathtaking. Christmas Markets abound in December. Our favorites were at St. Stephen’s Basilica in Budapest and the Vienna Rathaus. Both were crowded elbow-to-elbow, but cool weather and Glühwein kept Christmas spirits fresh and cheerful. Having given up souvenir buying years ago, we both escaped empty-handed. Friday and Saturday were low-key days in Vienna, mingling with Christmas tourists and finishing with memorable food and atmosphere at Zum Basilisken. But enough about the sights. Here are thoughts about traveling cheaply and lightly with little luggage. (continued on page 31)

Volunteering and Profound Life Questions: What Do They Have to Do With Each Other? Charlotte Confer, Benevilla Director of Volunteer Services In today’s fast paced life, many of us at different ages and stages of life find ourselves asking, “What is lacking in my life? What exactly is it that I am looking for? What is it that I really need to be happy? What difference do I make in the world around me?” Gandhi once said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Imagine finding the answers to your questions by looking outward from your own needs, your own desires, and looking to your neighbors, your community, your nation, your world. You may have seen or heard Benevilla’s tag line – “Cultivating Caring Communities.” How can we each take a part in cultivating caring in our community? It sounds so overwhelming – “What can I do? I’m only one person.” Just look around our community where there are thousands of individuals who strive for the independence that they once had. They’re looking to have a social visit or call – a friend, group, or place to belong. They’re seeking assistance with routine activities like grocery shopping, errands, transportation, or minor home repairs. There are children, young adults, families, and caregivers in our community that lack a supportive, encouraging presence in their life. They are all individuals with a desire to continue to be an active part of their community despite age, circumstances, or limitations. If we each reach up our hand to say yes to helping those in need, we become the very definition of a caring community, and we may begin to find ourselves and an answer for one of our own profound life questions. At Benevilla, volunteers are at the core of all we do. Benevilla has over 1,000 active volunteers and for every Benevilla employee

there are nine volunteers providing their skills and service for the betterment of our community. Please consider joining us as a Benevilla Volunteer in 2015- it’s a gift to give yourself! For more information on Volunteer opportunities please call Charlotte Confer at 623-584-4999.

Traveling Light (Continued) Luggage: Travel to Europe with only mid-sized backpacks small enough to fit under the seat in front of you. You can stash your “personal items” there too, thereby eliminating any chance of checking and losing luggage. It’s easy to strap on the backpack to take a bus, train, or subway from the airport. Clothing: America’s most adopted export is casualness so limiting your clothing is not a hardship. Europeans now go to concerts, church, and fancy restaurants dressed informally. However, none wear white shoes or shirts advertising the Arizona Cardinals. Most wear black or navy shoes, pants, shirts, and coats. Two or three sets of underwear and socks are enough. Wash them out at night. I actually washed my own shirt one night.

Don’t take an electric razor. Limit makeup and toiletries. Wearing clothes multiple days isn’t a problem—no one knows you-- you’re a tourist. Transportation: Taxis? Easy, but expensive. Subways? Cheap, clean; but you must negotiate ticket machines. Rail? Comfortable, but expensive. Inter-city buses? Comfortable, cheap, and with Wi-Fi. Who knew? Shop alternative transportation modes online or by asking. You could save a bundle. May your travels be light, cheap, and easy.

HEALTH & FITNESS

Tennis, A Game for All Ages Vicki Faaborg, Member at Large, Corte Bella Tennis Club Recently, the CBTC hosted The Sandra Day O’Connor High School’s girls’ tennis team in an ongoing effort to “pay it forward” and to again proudly represent the Corte Bella community. The CBTC and the Sandra Day O’Connor tennis team have a history dating back to the summer of 2014. At that time, the CBTC contacted the coach of the tennis team and offered to help with their tennis program. They gladly accepted and the CBTC informally “adopted” the team and has since raised $2,200.00 for equipment, tournaments, awards banquets, and other needs. On December 5, 2014, girls from the SDO tennis team accepted an invitation from the Corte Bella Tennis Club to play with several CBTC players. Following the event, CBTC president, Joel Piaskowski, stated, “It was a real pleasure having the girls come out and play with us. All of these girls are great students, athletes, and, overall, wonderful young women. Based on my experience with them, our future looks to be in very good hands.”

“All of us had a really fun time playing tennis, especially the girls. On the ride home, all they talked about was how nice all the CBTC members were for the day, along with the great snacks that were provided. Looking forward to doing it again.” If anyone is interested in helping to support the Sandra Day O’Connor “Eagles” girls’ tennis team, please contact our CBTC president, Joel Piaskowski, at 402-850-6639. Tennis IS a game for ALL ages, and if there are any Corte Bella residents interested in playing tennis and/or becoming a member of the Corte Bella Tennis Club, please contact any of the Corte Bella Tennis Club board members listed below. NOTE: An annual meeting to elect a new secretary, treasurer, and social chairmen is going to be held in January after the printing deadline for this article.

The girls from Sandra Day O’Connor are, of course, very young compared to the members of the CBTC who came out to play with them in a mixed doubles match. Several of the Corte Bella tennis courts were filled with young and, hmmm.…not so young. The CBTC players did their best to keep up with the young gals and did a very good job. Tennis is truly a game for all ages. The SDO girls and the CBTC players enjoyed the event and would love to have another event scheduled. As Coach Debbie states, The Sandra Day O’Connor Eagles girls’ tennis team participants: Left to Right: Gabby Shephard, Madison Hernandez, Coach Debbie Rodrigues, Siearra Rowlan, Kelly Slattery, Patti Slattery (mother of Kelly) and Gwynn Neal.

Each January, our Club renews memberships for the coming year and we hope to meet or exceed last year’s membership of 136. With so many people now, we take advantage of Court #5 being a dual-purpose court for both pickleball and tennis. In addition to the original lines for one game of tennis, there are four pickleball courts marked out. We have portable nets, and the area can be quickly set up to accommodate an additional 16 players (in Pickleball- typically we play in doubles). The use of this court varies for each sport throughout the year, but at the moment it is ready for Pickleball on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday - come check it out! Club members of all ability levels are invited to come to the courts and play every morning between 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon (winter hours). There will be courts designated for beginner, novice, and advanced levels so everyone can participate. Also in January - our membership will be holding elections for our 7-person Board. Keep an eye on the next issue of CB Times for an update. For those residents or visitors back at Corte Bella for the first time since last spring, you’ll notice a HUGE new improvement adjacent to our playing area: the Lanai. You’ll see not only Pickleball players, but also tennis players, bocce ball players, golfers, joggers, walkers, pets, et al enjoying this lovely shade with lots of places to sit, relax, and chat. Come down to our courts any day and see how the game is played - and join in! See you there.
