ASSOCIATION

Thanks for the Lifestyle It is not uncommon in Corte Bella to see an exemplary effort put forth by a volunteer. However, in this particular case, I wanted to acknowledge a superior effort for two reasons. One, because of the duration of the effort that lasted over two years and secondly, because of how the effort directly affected the day to day operations of Corte Bella and our team. Mike Arrington, Corte Bella Country Club Association, Inc. General Manager Jolene Piaskowski, Donna Folan and Colleen Miller dedicated an enormous amount of their personal time for quite a while to help ensure that the rest of the community and their neighbors had access to activities and entertainment. Although the events charter did not specify a certain amount of activity and events or the quality expected, they took it and ran with it to increase the volume by more than half over their time in the positions. There was never a doubt that the three worked together as a team and very well, I might add. In addition to their personal efforts, they organized a team of other volunteers that helped ensure the success of the program

8 | CB Times | The Official Community Magazine of Corte Bella

as well. It is extremely hard to single out one volunteer over all others or even a few over the many but I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the fantastic, passionate and unselfish effort put forth by our outgoing events coordination team as they move on towards enjoying the lifestyle that they too came to Corte Bella to enjoy. Although, the standard these ladies set is above and beyond by definition and it would be great to maintain this level of activity, it was never expected or required which makes it even more special. The beauty of the events coordinator responsibilities is that it is an opportunity to make it what you want it to be as a volunteer and these gals knocked it out of the park. Along with this special commendation, I would also like to take the opportunity to commend and thank everyone that gives up a date night, a round of golf, a visit to see the grandchildren or any other moment of enjoyment in their personal lives to make sure that their fellow residents are considered and taken care of in the lifestyle department. Truly, there are never the right or enough words to say about this kind of commitment and unselfish contribution. Thank you to all who contribute no matter how much or how often because it all matters. Thanks to Jolene, Donna and Colleen for doing it full speed and as hard as you could. Your contributions will be remembered for a long time. It was my pleasure to work on the same team with you.

Corte Bella’s Anacapa Celebrates 8 Years Linda Wright Even the weather cooperated when 300+ Corte Bella residents gathered to salute and celebrate the community restaurant’s 8th anniversary. Stormy skies cleared and the cooler temperatures were perfect for this event. Attendees were able to dine out on the patio and dance in the breezeway to DJ Ray Mar’s lively tunes. Food stations set up around the social hall and the back patio offered residents delicious food tastings from shrimp pasta to pulled pork and there was “anniversary” cake too. This annual occasion more or less begins the “season” in Corte Bella every year and this year’s event was a great beginning. Executive Chef, Dan Haywood stated, “The anniversary celebration is a wonderful way to thank the community for their

continued support and for our staff to showcase the Anacapa. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to be able to introduce the Anacapa to all the new community residents. This is a great event every year and one we love to host.” Food and Beverage Manager, Fred Hernandez said, “On behalf of the Anacapa Wait Staff and its management, we wish to thank all the Corte Bella residents for yet another great year and for your continued support. We are excited to start the new season and look forward to a wonderful holiday season as well. Thank you to all of you who make this community a great place for all of us to work.” Corte Bella once again saluted the success of its community restaurant for the eighth year running and conveyed continued best wishes from all the community to the Anacapa and its staff.

COMMUNITY

Bits and Bytes 2. Your Individual Home Page

Dave Wright In this second article of a series related to the Corte Bella community website (www.cortebella.net), the focus is on what the user encounters initially when logging onto the site.

1. The Corte Bella Home Page The Corte Bella home page is divided into five sections, full of information for residents and non-residents, alike. The first thing that catches the eye are two photos; one of the bridge leading into the community and the other of one of the two fountains flanking the main entrance. Both photos highlight the Santa Barbara architectural style prevalent within Corte Bella. Between these two photos is the main menu bar for non-residents. The pages that can be accessed from this menu by anyone provide a glimpse into community facilities and services open to the public. The next section of general interest is a set of four images near the bottom of the page. These contain hyper-links so that when you click on the image it will take you to the associated webpage. The first image allows you to view the most recent copy of the Corte Bella Times which is full of information on community affairs as well as wide ranging articles of interest. Clicking on the second image will bring up the Anacapa Restaurant’s home page. The third image is for residents only, providing a shortcut to the Resident and Visitor Management System, a useful resident only security tool. And clicking on the fourth image takes you to First Service Residential’s (FSR) home page. FSR provides contractual management services to Corte Bella. The bottom section of the home page provides a brief description of the community as well as a somewhat dated slideshow.

After signing in with your secure password, the system displays your individual home page which consists of as many as eight information modules. You control which modules are displayed by using the Edit Modules and Save Site Layout buttons. Each information module provides hyper-links to the five most recent items posted to the website. Together, they provide a quick snapshot of what’s going on in the community without having to navigate to them via the menu tabs. The other two modules, My Account and Weather, deserve a more detailed look.

3. My Account The My Account module has three tabs, two of which are used to personalize your account. The first tab of interest is the Profile tab. This is where you can change your personal information that appears on the website and also your account sign-in name and password. (Changing your password at least twice a year is a good security practice.) The Subscription tab is where you subscribe or unsubscribe to emails generated by the website. These range from upcoming community events to any or all of the Discussion Group postings.

4. Weather This module displays the current temperature and chance of rain information. Clicking anywhere in the module will direct your browser to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) detailed 7-day forecast page for Sun City West. The page also contains every conceivable piece of weather information about Sun City West in addition to links to other weather-related websites.

San Ramon Stringers – Christmas Lights San Ramon Stringers This year marks the eighth year the residents of San Ramon and several surrounding streets decorate their homes in celebration of Christmas. One event – held on one particular evening - has historically been the “kick-off” for the beginning of the seasonal celebrations on San Ramon. This night is called “Walk-AboutNight.” This year it will be on Friday, December 4th - at dark. Every year residents are invited to share in this holiday celebration. On “Walk-About-Night” the streets are crowded with visitors and residents who are there to enjoy the lights and Christmas spirit! This year, as in past years, the local chapter of the Salvation Army will be present with their traditional Red Kettle. Last year donations totaled nearly $4,500 – in one evening! Our goal this year is to break the $5,000 mark! This is an annual event that allows the residents of Corte Bella to enjoy the spirit of Christmas and to share their good fortunes with those less fortunate. Officials of the Salvation Army have stated that the money raised will go to benefit needy families in the local area. Another great tradition of this event is the presence of the Corte Bella Chorus. This group of talented CB residents will be singing traditional Christmas carols for our listening pleasure. Last year we had a surprise visit from Santa Claus himself and two of his

Elves. As for this year, we are not sure yet if he will stop by. It may depend on how good we are! Mark your calendars now and stop by on Friday, Dec 4th - and get into the Christmas Spirit! We hope to see you there! The San Ramon Stringers

Corte Bella Vets Beer and Wine Tasting Event Larry Leighton The Beer and Wine Tasting Event, sponsored by the Corte Bella Vets Group, held on October 19th was a great success. Over 100 residents and guests attended, sampling three red and three white wines from Italy, Spain, Washington, and California provided by Quail Distributing and two domestic and two German beers provided by Crescent Crown Distributing. Chef Dan provided an amazing sampling of light hors d’oeuvres to go with the wine and beer. Ray Mar provided patriotic music for our listening pleasure during the event. This event was the first of two events being sponsored by the Corte Bella Vets Group to raise funds in support of America’s Mighty Warriors and Fisher House Arizona in their efforts to provide much needed services to our Veterans and their families in Arizona. The second planned event is the Golf Tournament scheduled on Saturday, January 30, 2016 right here at the Corte Bella Golf Club. As of this writing, we have raised over $30,000 including numerous non-cash donations for raffle prizes and the silent auction from friends, neighbors, local golf courses, and too many local business to list in this article and generous cash donations from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, First Service Residential, Gothic Landscaping, Bill and Karen Isaacson, Nancy Amato, Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community, American Precision

Holiday Planning Just Got Easier Debby Brady and Sharon Orlopp The holidays are upon us and SOuL (Smiling Out Loud) is here to make your life easier. Are you searching for that perfect gift or do you need some holiday treats for yourself and for get-togethers? Search no further. On Saturday, December 5th from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm at the Social Hall, there will be homemade breads, cookies, cakes, fudge, toffee, and pretzels that will tantalize any sweet tooth! We will also have vendor boutique tables filled with unique hostess gifts, stocking stuffers, cork items, pet gifts, and other items. You can even order early and beat the crowds at this high traffic event by visiting the “pre-order” table at the Corte Bella Marketplace on October 31st and the Farmer’s Market on November 11th. On these two dates, there will be samples of the 2015 Holiday Baskets which are one-of-a-kind beautifully decorated baskets filled with a variety of baked goods and

holiday items. For your convenience, pre-ordered baskets will be hand-delivered December 4th – 6th. Three years ago, SOuL started this event. SOuL originally hosted “holiday houses” available to tour. Cookies and beverages were available at the completion of the tour. The homemade cookies were such a hit, people inquired if they were able to purchase them... hence, the idea of the bake/boutique sale was born. SOuL wanted to be able to give back to the residents who supported us and have provided beautiful homemade items at very reasonable prices for the past several years. Proceeds of the bake sale and boutique support a local charity, Eve’s Place. Eve’s Place empowers victims of domestic abuse through their community service programs that are offered at 10 locations in the West Valley of Maricopa County.

Trip of A Lifetime... Robin Mandell “A Trip of a Lifetime” seems to be the sentiment of all 16 of us who recently returned from a trip together to Africa. It’s a very long journey - what made it so memorable?

Cape Town - an incredibly beautiful city •

Table Mountain, and the “table cloth” of fog that starts to appear at sunset

A spectacular coastline, with tony towns such as Camp’s Bay and Clifton

World-class shops and restaurants at the Victoria & Alfred waterfront area

Fabulous food and wine at very reasonable prices (the South African Rand is currently at an all-time low against the U.S. Dollar)

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens, with flowers and plants in their springtime glory

A journey south down the Cape Peninsula - to the Cape of Good Hope

All of us pounding the drums at our African experience dinner at GOLD

Wineland towns of Paarl, Franschhoek, and Stellenbosch •

Spectacular scenery: broad valleys between high, dramatic mountains

Old (founded by the Dutch in the 1600’s) wineries with upto-date showrooms, attentive staff, and delicious wines

South African red grape varietal ‘pinotage’

Our favorite winery: Ernie Els’! Fabulous location; great wines.

One of the top hotels in Africa, Le Quartier Francais in Franschhoek

First-class winery dinner at Grande Provence

Safari - three nights at Nottens’ Bush Camp, which we had all to ourselves •

Coming around the corner and seeing your first giraffe or baby rhino or elephant or lion or zebra - up close and personal

Seeing all the “Big Five” animals - and many more, plus colorful birds

Superb food and service at this family-owned “camp,” with an ultimate final evening with “sundowner” cocktails and appetizers out in the bush - a large group of singers from a nearby village magically appeared to entertain us

Sunsets rivaling Corte Bella’s

Victoria Falls - on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia •

Bad news: dry time of year so not as much water coming over the falls

Good news: we didn’t get soaking wet and could actually take pictures and see the deep gorges

Sunset cruise along the Zambezi River, spotting hippos, crocs, and elephants

Our great lodge where we could sit and watch the animals and birds come to the water hole below

Traveling with great friends from Corte Bella and Sun City West!

Not Just A Card Group Barbara Morin and Barbara Wilson The YaYas celebrated October 30th with their annual fun filled Halloween catered lunch and card playing costume party. We owe Fred Hernandez and staff our appreciation for their efforts. The taco buffet and specialty drinks were delicious. YaYas took their annual parade through the restaurant for the amusement of the patrons. The YaYa’s chosen charity for this year is Benevilla, a non-profit organization started in 1981. Do you need help during an illness or after surgery? Benevilla serves the local senior community by helping to keep seniors independent and in their own home by providing a number of free supportive services including: grocery shopping, transportation, business assistance, handy person, and friendly visitors and phone pals. Benevilla has six adult day centers: two for memory care, two for restorative (stroke) therapy, and two for developmentally disabled adults providing care as well as vocational training. These are all supported by more than 950 volunteers and over 100 employees. YaYa’s donations make

a difference by helping to provide these services. If you would like more information, Benevilla’s phone number is (623) 584-4999 or check out their web site at www.benevilla.org. The annual Toys For Tots boxes will be on display starting November 2nd through December 4th at the Fitness Center, HOA office, and the Golf Club. Last year YaYas collected over six carloads of toys which were distributed by the Peoria Police Department to children who were victims of violence within the City of Peoria. The YaYas will be delivering the toys to the Peoria Police Department again this year. No time to shop? No need to worry. One of our elves would be happy to do it for you. Please contact Barb Morin at either (623)362-1683 or (623)363-1684. As you can see, the YaYas is not just a card group. We have a great time playing cards, but through our efforrts we also help those less fortunate in our community.

Center Court Highlights Vicki Faaborg Dave Beams is one of the social chairs of the Corte Bella Tennis Club. He lends his time and talents to help ensure that the Club’s social events are well-organized and fun for everyone. Dave Beams grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He attended and graduated from Indiana University and also spent a year at Purdue University in graduate school studying geology. He was a division officer and a bridge watch officer on the USS Coral Sea in the United States Navy. Dave was an operations officer after being transferred to Panama. One of the highlights of his stint in Panama was being a military escort for Communist flagships and, as a result, has been through the Panama Canal 20-25 times. Following the service, Dave has spent his life as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon but states his most fun job was “driving an aircraft carrier around the Pacific Ocean as a 22 or 23-year-old.” Dave is now a widower and has 2 sons and 3 granddaughters all of whom live in the Phoenix area. Dave has many hobbies and interests which include astronomy, geology, Roman history, opera, tennis, and big band and rock & roll music. He appreciates fine wine, food, and travel. “I’ve been to all 7 continents, 59 countries, and all 50 states.” Before he travels, he studies the culture, history, language, and cuisine of each country and tries to “go native” as much as possible. “I usually stay in 2-star walk-up family-owned hotels and like to eat in mom and pop restaurants, especially ones where little or no English is spoken. This is fun for me.” When asked, he states his favorite country is France and coming in second is Italy. Also incorporated into his travels are trips to watch tennis at Indian Wells which he has done for 3 of the last 5 years. He plans to return in March of 2016. Dave started playing tennis in January of 2008 which is when he moved to Corte Bella full-time. He had just retired as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. He states that he is not a gym person and does not golf, so tennis seemed to be a good choice for him. He tried taekwondo but it wasn’t enough exercise. As he had been a hockey player until the age of 60, he needed a sport with a lot of running and endurance. He was attracted to tennis because it was an active team sport. He learned tennis rapidly and became a very good player after taking lessons from Jerry Tinsley of Corte Bella and other pros at Paseo and Surprise. His highlights so far have been tournament victories that he has shared with doubles partners, Greg Albrecht and Rick Ryer, both of Corte Bella. One of his favorite shots on the court is a cross court forehand from off the court. He also loves to volley. For the past 6 years, Dave has played for a 3.5 men’s league at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Club. He also plays in a 7.0 mixed doubles league at the STRC. He now enjoys tennis because of the exercise and because of the friendships he has made with teammates and opponents. If any new players would meet Dave and ask him for advice, he would tell them that they should take lessons in order to learn the fundamentals correctly, they should attend the drop-in sessions regularly, and they should join a team or two.
