ASSOCIATION
From the Manager’s Desk: Volunteers Dear Residents: You may have heard me say in the past that it takes a strong volunteer force to make a community great. You have probably also heard the old saying “It takes a village”. It is up to those who get involved and who actively promote a community and its programs to make a community great. Mike Arrington, Corte Bella Country Club Association, Inc. General Manager For instance, did you know that the entertainment program in Corte Bella is and has been 100% volunteer operated for more than seven years? That’s right, your entertainment events and the number of events are directly proportionate to the volunteer effort. The strength of the program depends solely on the strength of the volunteer commitment. Many other CB programs exist solely because resident volunteers see these programs as valid and an important part of Corte Bell. They are willing to step up and with their time and talent to make a difference. For example: The Corte Bella Times magazine is a product of volunteers willing to commit time to its production and content. We have been blessed to have a really dedicated team that has ensured the high quality and frequency of that periodical. Your Corte Bella Website is another example of volunteers at work and their willingness to contribute to make it another great resource

for you as a resident. They are people just like you working behind the scenes making sure that all of these community programs live on to make your life a little bit better each day. We all know you can throw money at anything but it does not guarantee that the outcome will be great. The difference I speak of is whether or not these community programs even exist or not sometimes. It is very easy to develop the mindset that “someone else will step forward and make sure these things happen”; however, sometimes that person may be you and you don’t realize it. It’s kind of like the mindset of “I don’t need to vote because my one vote does not really matter” when your vote could be the difference. Make no mistake about it when I say that your community needs you and you CAN make a significant contribution to the lifestyle of each and every Corte Bella resident. This community needs you now and always at some time or another and now could be that time. No commitment of your time is too small and even if you are seasonal, I can find a way for you to contribute. I’ve said this before, but I love the 55 plus communities because there are so many talented people who have so much to offer. So, if you have some time and want to be a part of the greatness that is Corte Bella, think about volunteering some time at any level that suits you because everyone matters to me. I have always put a high premium on volunteers and would be glad to assist you with finding a role that will be satisfying and helpful. Thank you to all of the volunteers that make this a great place to live and the lifestyle it represents. You are all special. To reach me: e-mail to cbgm@cortebellacca.com Mike
Board Talk: Summer Activities Jim Williams, President, Board of Directors While the Board did not hold any scheduled meetings since June, there have been significant Board and Committee activities during the summer. This update is provided as many of you have gone “snow birding or on summer getaways. In June, the Board approved an alternative investment process for a small portion (5%) of HOA Reserves. Much thought went into this initiative - thanks to the Finance Committee (FC) and Investment Subcommittee for their diligence. The initial investment was made 30 June; performance has been as expected. The results will be published with the monthly Financials. Budget activities have been a priority since May, even more so since the Board provided Budget guidance and received the initial budget input from our General Manager (GM). First Service Residential (FSR) accounting, the GM and Managers, the FC (individual members cover different cost-center areas) and the Treasurer and Asst. Treasurer have every HOA Department and HOA activity under the budget microscope. The 2016 budget will be presented to the community and Board 6:00PM, 1 October. Street maintenance and repair cost priority was boosted after early 2013 inquiries on the effectiveness of the then Reserve Budget plan. The potential impact on Reserves was reassessed after the Board received a comprehensive street evaluation report July 2013, along with a 30-year maintenance plan proposal. The Board then approved the 2014-2015 Budgets that were based on the street study, and plan assumptions and recommendations. The first (ever) major road repairs were completed in 2014 including asphalt repairs, crack filling, and sealing of all streets. The Board also directed obtaining a second professional opinion (done in June & July 2015) on the current state of our roads (one year after the 2014 efforts), and to review and assess the adequacy of the 2013 proposed maintenance program, the need for and scope of a structural enhancement program, and the adequacy of the funding plan. The second opinion evaluation and recommended revised long term plan was presented at a 17 July town hall meeting (that included a different road preservation approach). A follow-on meeting was held 31 July to answer many added questions and clarify some findings. The Technology Committee (TC) is working with the HOA to have our first web conference Board Meeting at the 18 Sept workshop. An earlier test will be done with several volunteers at home and away from Corte Bella. If you would like to participate, let the GM know as soon as possible. The TC is concurrently working to facilitate the web-conference moderator function, and the overall process. The TC has started refining the Phase II Audio-Visual system upgrade. The Phase II effort follows the successful completion of Phase I (now used nearly daily for many different venues). Phase II items being considered include a video camera and/or
video streaming, additional video monitors, dynamic information displays, enhanced audio for those having hearing disorders, and updated outdoor speakers (breezeway, patio and fire-pit areas). In lieu of a committee meeting in August, the TC will conduct a series of web-conference meetings with the GM to discuss the above items and several on-going actions (including Jonas Server update, Technology inventory and website security). It has been pretty much business as usual for ARC meetings, and FC monthly Financial review during the summer. The B&G met 14 August covering the announced agenda (that included the streets second opinion). The GAC, NASC, and TC did not meet during the summer, but will meet again in September. The next Board meetings include a workshop 18 Sept, and Regular meeting 23 Sept. If you have questions on any Board, Committee or HOA Board/ Committee related activity, you may email the GM directly or send to communication@cortebellacca.com. You can also email a specific Committee (see email addresses on the website under the contacts menu item). Note: use the cbgm@cortebellacca.com email address for HOA related general questions or comments. Hope that your summer has been fun, safe and cool! We are all looking forward to seeing you in September.

CULINARY
Hello Corte Bella Residents As summer is nearly behind us, now in September we are looking forward to some cooler temperatures coming our way. We have some great events coming in September. On Labor Day weekend we will have a cabaret night with music and dancing. Tickets will be on sale at
Executive Chef Dan Haywood, Anacapa Restaurant the Fitness center. We will have a nice mix of food items as well as cold beverages and libations for those in a festive mood.
We will be at hosting another themed happy hour in late September. This time it will be by reservation only in the Santa Barbara Room with a DJ, dance floor and happy hour pricing. It will be a “Back to the 50’s” theme paired with “diner-style” appetizers to choose from. It should be a fun evening. The first of the Fall Cooking Demo series starts on October 2nd at 11:30 am. Tickets will be going on sale in early September. I hope to see you there. Here is a fun recipe for Pickled Vegetable Sushi that is great chilled dish for a hosted lunch or as an appetizer and a great conversation piece. Enjoy.
Pickled Vegetable Sushi with Spicy Dip
Pickled Vegetables 2 cups Rice Vinegar 1 cup water 1 cup sugar 1 jalapeno, Chopped ½ tsp kosher Salt 1 tbsp Grated Ginger
1 red Bell Pepper, Julienned 1 yellow Pepper Julienned 1 large Carrot, peeled, Julienned 1 small Jicama, peeled, Julienned •
Bring Vinegar, water, sugar, Jalapeno, Salt and ginger to a boil. Simmer for a minute or two.
•
Strain into a container.
•
Place all the vegetables in a shallow pan, keeping all the vegetables somewhat separate in uniform rows, pour the hot liquid over the vegetables.
•
•
When ready to use the vegetables, drain them. Otherwise, keep them submerged in the liquid until ready to use.
•
Combine the rice vinegar, sugar and salt in a small bowl and heat in the microwave or on stove high for 30 to 45 seconds or until warm.
•
The Vegetables will keep for 2 to 3 days very well in the refrigerator.
•
Transfer the rice into a large wooden or glass mixing bowl and add the vinegar mixture. Fold thoroughly to combine and coat each grain of rice with the mixture.
•
Allow to cool to room temperature before using to make sushi.
Sushi Rice
2 cups sushi or short grain rice 2 cups water, plus extra for rinsing rice 2 tablespoons unseasoned Rice Vinegar 2 tablespoons sugar 1 tablespoon Kosher Salt
Directions •
Place the rice into a mixing bowl and cover with cool water. Swirl the rice in the water, pour off and repeat 2 to 3 times or until the water is clear.
•
Place the rice and 2 cups of water into a medium saucepan and place over high heat. Bring to a boil, uncovered. Once it begins to boil, reduce the heat to the lowest setting and cover. Cook for 15 minutes.
The liquid should cover the veggies. Cover and refrigerate until chilled. An hour or two at least, best overnight. •
Remove from the heat and let stand, covered, for 10 minutes.

Paradise in Corte Bella Joel Piaskowski, Anacapa Marketing As we all know, living here in Corte Bella is “Paradise” in the West Valley. Once again, the Anacapa restaurant and the HOA events group combined their talents to take us on a brief trip to the islands. On July 23rd, a “Paradise Island” themed Happy Hour was held at Corta Bella. Approximately 150 people attended fully decked out in their tropical attire. From grass skirts to beads, leis to coconut shells, and flowered shirts to dresses, everyone in attendance fit right in. The CB Events Group made sure the tables were nicely decorated to make all feel welcomed. About the only thing missing was a sand beach. Chef Dan Haywood prepared special themed appetizers as well as the regular Happy Hour menu. The jerk spiced chicken wings with mango chutney and the Hawaiian flatbread pizza with Canadian bacon and grilled pineapple were the most popular. Many people were able to enjoy the Arizona “Tropical” heat because of the misters, fans, and umbrellas on the patio. Great times were had by all while sipping tropical drinks, and listening

To prepare the shell of sushi roll. Lay bamboo mat on a flat cutting board or sterile counter. You can wrap the mat in plastic if you like, This will keep the bamboo from getting dirty and make it easier to roll. Place seaweed wrapper on mat. Add rice. Spread about one cup of rice on the seaweed wrap. Pat the rice down into an even thin layer. Be sure to leave a little room on all the edges of the wrap (about 3/4-1 inch). Note: Wet fingers will help you pat down the sticky rice. It should be even and compact with no gaps.
•
Add your ingredients; lay down strips of vegetable in the center of the rice. Add Avocado slices and any other ingredients you like.
•
Start the roll. Carefully start rolling by bringing the mat and plastic wrap over the ingredients. Be sure to pull the mat in tight and tuck the wrap under to begin the rolling. At the same time, do not let the mat and plastic wrap get caught in with the ingredients. It is important you make the roll tight as you start to roll.
•
Continue to roll. As you roll, keep pressure on the roll until you have about one inch left on the wrap. To seal the roll, use cold water along the wrap and finish the California roll
•
Make it tight. To finish the roll, keep the bamboo wrap around the roll and squeeze it gently around the roll to even it out and forms a nice firm cylinder roll
Remove the plastic wrap and cut the roll into even pieces crosswise. Immediately serve with dipping sauce and soy. Enjoy!
to Hawaiian, Calypso, and Reggae music with friends and neighbors. Don Ho, Harry Belafonte, and Bob Marley would have surely given a “thumbs up” on the music. Overall, it was another wonderful afternoon at the Anacapa in our little corner of paradise!

Financial Summary –
Six Months Ended June 30, 2015 Jeff Ablin, Finance Committee Chairperson Results of Operations For the six month period ending June 30, 2015, excluding reserve contributions, we realized a net operating surplus of $154,900. This was $87,200 favorable compared to the budgeted surplus of $67,800. The June Financials were approved by the Finance Committee on July 23rd and will be presented to the Board at the September 23rd meeting (no August Board meeting). Following is a brief discussion of departmental results and significant variances compared to budget:

Unfavorable variances were experienced for contingency due to the engineering fees paid for the street safety study, legal fees due to increased collections efforts and gate card purchases due to budget timing.

granite replacement in the first six months of 2015. The favorable surplus was related to budget timing for painting. Reserve Funds Repair and replacement fund (including streets) – The June 30 fund balance of $2,714,500 increased $182,800 from the December 31, 2014 ending balance. Unbudgeted projects resulting in unfavorable variances included common area wi-fi replacement and upgrade ($4,300), HVAC compressor replacement ($5,100), gate controller loop replacement (3,100) and pool umbrella replacement ($3,300). Funds were also expended for social hall furniture ($2,100) related to the 2014 renovation and fountain repairs ($3,300) to replace sand filters. Capital projects – The June 30 fund balance of $235,700 decreased $18,400 from the December 31, 2014 ending balance. Reserve fund fees from home re-sales, used to fund capital improvements, were $10,900 favorable, while the audio-visual project was $3,000 unfavorable. The other unfavorable expenses which led to the balance decline versus yearend were related to unbudgeted projects - purchase of a golf utility cart ($10,300) and guard podium ($17,500). Summary Overall, the first half financial operating results were quite favorable. The favorable operating variance of $87,200 was largely attributable to delays in hiring board approved positions, dramatically reduced water and sewer charges, increased focus on collections and budget timing for plant replacement and various administrative costs. Our contingency account took a hit to fund the street safety study. Our Reserves are starting to rebuild after the major projects last year for street repair and restaurant remodeling. On the horizon, we need to continue to be diligent on major expenditures for streets. Based on our reserve analysis and the related contribution rates, total reserve funds appear adequate to meet future repair and replacement requirements contingent on future requirement associated with street repairs. The Capital Improvement Fund also continues to grow as we add transfer fees from home sales to fund the account. Our cash position is sufficient to meet our operating needs. From an investment standpoint, we continue to maintain our conservative investment strategy to minimize risk and ensure liquidity, while seeking yield improvement opportunities. We added a preferred stock ETF in June to generate dividend income and plan on proposing additional alternate investment scenarios to the Board to enhance returns, with minimum risk. Details on all financial statements can be found on the Corte Bella website under HOA>Community documents>Financials. Please feel free to contact any member of the Finance Committee regarding questions or suggestions.

Did You Leave Your Garage Door Open? Steve DeBoer, NASC Member Occasionally after I leave the house I cannot remember if I closed the garage door. Usually I think about it before I get too far away and can circle back and check. However, what do you do if you are far away before you think about it? Well you could call your neighbors and ask them to close the door for you, easy-peasy if you have taken the time to get to know them and they are home. Or, if you are replacing your garage door opener you can buy a new one that can be controlled via your smartphone (or any connected device) or is equipped with a controller that closes the door after a preselected amount of time. However if you do not know your neighbors or they are not home or you are not planning to replace your opener, you still have options. You can buy add-on units that also allow you to close the door with your smartphone (or any connected device) or simply close the door after a preset amount of time. All these
devices are offered by numerous companies and vary in the level of control and ease of use. As with any product you need to do your research to assure applicability and safety of the device(s). If in doubt you should contact a licensed contractor for their recommendation. Not sure who to contact? As a resident of Corte Bella you are a member of the Property Owners and Residents Association (PORA) of Sun City West and can get a list of three or four contractors which have registered with PORA and have had their references checked. You can get more information about that process at the following website: http://www.porascw. org/consumerServices.php. Making sure your garage door is closed is just one more step you can take to keep your house and Corte Bella safe and give you peace of mind when you leave home.

Local Resident Leads Double Life Mike Verhoeks Corte Bella resident Mike Verhoeks might be said to have led a double life. While pursuing a career in Geology and Geophysics for the last 45 years, his real avocation dates back even earlier. “I’ve been making pottery since I was 10 years old”, says Verhoeks (now 65). “One of my earliest childhood memories is of fashioning objects out of pie dough as my mother baked in the kitchen (This was before Play Doh had been invented). From that time on, I have been playing with clay whenever time and circumstances have allowed. At times, my real job has gotten in the way.” Verhoeks’ career as a Geophysicist has taken him to some out of the way locales, to say the least. He has had work assignments in Ethiopia, Syria, Kazakhstan, and Turkey. He and his wife, Elizabeth, along with their two children, Adam and Emily, also lived for a number of years in Perth, Australia and Anchorage, Alaska. “When we lived in Australia for almost two years, Verhoeks relates, my electric potter’s wheel was useless because the power in that country is 50 hertz instead of the 60 cycle electricity that we are used to in this country.” Nevertheless, Verhoeks never abandoned his love for fashioning clay on a potter’s wheel and continued to hone his craft whenever circumstances allowed. “Becoming proficient on the potter’s wheel takes a lot of time, practice and patience” says Verhoeks. “I had probably been throwing pottery on the wheel for 15 years before I felt that I was making anything decent. You have to throw hundreds, if not thousands of pots in order to gain any kind of proficiency as a potter”, Verhoeks states. “At least that was the case for me.” Verhoeks’ desire to be a professional potter eventually got so strong that he took early retirement from a major oil company in Anchorage, Alaska in 1995. “I left a great job and moved my wife and two teenagers to a small town in New Hampshire to begin a whole new career,” says Verhoeks. “Looking back on it now, it is surprising that they even came with me. I’m sure they thought I was crazy. I was 45 years old and wanted to see whether or not I could make a living as a studio potter as opposed to being a cog in a corporate machine.” In Verhoeks’ opinion, the experiment was a success. “We earned our living by running a pottery studio, a small gallery, and selling at local craft shows” says Verhoeks. “I also taught pottery classes
to supplement our income. It was a family enterprise, and I think the experience brought all of us closer together. Eventually, both my son and daughter found their spouses in that small New Hampshire town, so I think we all look back on those days with a certain fondness.” The 12 year experiment came to an unexpected conclusion one day when a commercial developer walked in to the pottery and offered to buy the property in order to build a national chain pharmacy on the site. “They made us an offer we couldn’t refuse” says Verhoeks. “We took the money and decided to follow our grandchildren around the country in order to be close to them.” After a short stint in upstate New York, that odyssey brought Mike and Elizabeth to Corte Bella. “We are truly blessed”, says Verhoeks. “Both of our kids and all 4 of our grandkids are within 30 minutes of Corte Bella. We get to see them all the time. Life is good.” These days, Verhoeks still works as a Geophysical Consultant while continuing to pursue his pottery avocation at a small art co-op in Surprise. His work continues to evolve and Verhoeks’ passion for what he does is evident. “In New Hampshire”, Verhoeks says, “I was pretty much confined to making utilitarian functional pottery for everyday use. New Englanders are very practical people and they won’t buy anything that they can’t use every day. Now that I am no longer working under those restrictions, I have begun to explore a totally new and very exciting area of ceramics that very few others have yet to discover.” The technique that Verhoeks refers to is a new technique that involves growing crystals within the glaze. “Crystal glazing is a process that has only been explored in depth during the last dozen years or so”, says Verhoeks. “It involves saturating the glaze with zinc and then carefully controlling the firing cycle so that the growth of zinc silicate crystals can actually occur spontaneously when the kiln reaches the appropriate temperature to allow crystal growth. Glaze calculations have to be precise”, says Verhoeks, “and the firing schedule has to be carefully controlled. But, when everything is done correctly, large beautiful metallic crystals magically appear within the finished glaze. I can control the size of the crystals by varying the time that I allow crystal growth within the firing cycle.” Says Verhoeks. “I can even create a bull’s eye effect by varying the temperature slightly within the crystal growing phase of the firing cycle”, Verhoeks explains. “The results can be spectacular, but they are not easily obtained. Because of the composition of the glaze, it is necessary to build a pedestal under each pot to catch the runoff of the very liquid glaze. The pedestals need to be broken off when the glaze cools and then the bottoms need to be polished before the pots are ready for presentation. It is a long labor of love to produce a good piece”, says Verhoeks. “But, when it all comes together, it’s magic.” Continued next page

SOuL Supports West Valley Education Linda Wright Corte Bella’s charity group Smiling Out Loud, better known as SOuL, is continuing its support of a West Valley Title One school, Park Meadows Elementary School. This low income neighborhood public school with dedicated teachers helps disadvantaged valley children reach their maximum potential and has achieved an “A” rating by the district. This school year, with budget restraints, the
teachers would have lost a valuable teaching resource for grades 3, 4 and 5 since there were no funds to pay for a subscription to a weekly news magazine called “Time for Kids.” The publication provides the students with age appropriate current event news, and articles incorporating reading, writing, science, math and social studies skills which are used in class and at home. The loss of this teaching tool would have left a serious gap in the daily education of more than 270 students. To meet this urgent need, SOuL donated $1,500 to the school to fund this year’s subscription. All SOuL members thank the Corte Bella community for its generous support to our fundraising activities that allow our organization to assist our West Valley neighbors in need.
Welcome, “WOW ” (Women of Wisdom) Please extend an enthusiastic, supportive welcome to Corte Bella’s newest volunteer charity fundraising program. “WOW’s” mission is to “pay it forward” to those in need and to perform conscious, random acts of kindness by raising funds to support local 501.c.3 charities and connecting with other individuals through acts of kindness. “I am extraordinarily excited about this amazing, wonderful endeavor, a dream come true for me, and can’t wait to begin our important work”, said President & Founder Lynne McVeigh. WOW’s first chosen charity, America’s Mighty Warriors, founded
by Surprise resident Debbie Lee to honor her son Marc, supports and honors the sacrifices of our troops, their families and the fallen. Watch the Corte Bella Times for future updates and events. Contact Lynne at 623-433-9921, for further information. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” Margaret Mead (12/16/01 – 11/15/78)
Local Resident Leads Double Life (continued) Rather than making utilitarian functional ware as he did in the past, Verhoeks now only makes decorative bottles and vases. “I am now free to make only those shapes that I find challenging and beautiful”, says Verhoeks. I’ve made thousands of coffee mugs in the past and I guess they have all helped me to get to the point that I now find myself. The challenge of making full blown forms rather than simple bowls and plates is an exercise that continues to challenge my skills and imagination. And, fortunately, these shapes lend themselves beautifully to crystal glazes.”
Because he still works as a Geophysical Consultant, Mike’s output is, presently, quite limited. Rather than placing his work in galleries, Verhoeks prefers to sell at the occasional craft show and by word-of-mouth from friends and past customers. “I enjoy the interaction and feedback that I get from the public when I do local shows,’ says Verhoeks. I think that folks have a more complete experience when they buy a piece of art directly from the artist. And I get valuable input as to what appeals to people other than myself. I have my own personal tastes, but they don’t always coincide with what others like, so I still try to be sensitive to what the market is looking for. Ultimately, I am trying to create objects of lasting beauty that can add a bit of pleasure to the lives of others. This, to me, is success and fulfillment. Editor’s note: A sampling of Verhoeks’ work can be seen on the ETSY website under “saltriverstoneware”

Helping Kids Feel Better to Heal Better JoAnn M. Shaw, CB Resident In the March, 2015 issue of the Corte Bella Times, I introduced you to ConKerr Cancer…a Case for Smiles. YOUR response has been incredible in helping to give sick kids a reason to smile, one pillowcase at a time.
WHO WE ARE
We are one of the few volunteer organizations solely dedicated to helping sick children cope with the stress of their illnesses and injuries.
WHY WE BEGAN
Cindy Kerr began making pillowcases for her son Ryan more than a decade ago to brighten up his hospital room and to put a smile on his face while he was being treated for bone cancer. Although Ryan is no longer with us physically, his legacy lives on.
WHAT WE DO
We provide children with whimsical pillowcases that give them an emotional boost and remind them they are NOT defined by their illness. This simple gift is a proven stress reliever including distraction and hope, to enhance the emotional and wellbeing of these children and their families.
EXPANDING OUR REACH AND MISSION
Since ConKerr Cancer started nationally in 2002, we have delivered More than 1,000,000 cases and counting! We served more than 50,000 children at 330 hospitals and have established more than 120 chapters!
The Phoenix Chapter has hit the ground running since we began in November, 2014 and we have made a tremendous impact in the region. I would like to extend my personal heartfelt thanks and deep gratitude to the Corte Bella community. The volunteer spirit is alive and well and your response has been amazing.
YOU CAN HELP!
Volunteers can help by: •
Sew a pillowcase (sew individually or sew with our group)
•
Donate fabric or money (each pillowcase cost $12.00)
•
Volunteer to help cut fabric, iron the finished cases, and pack them for delivery
Our group sewing sessions are listed in the CB Times with location and time or you can call me at 623-466-6223 or email me at cases4smilesaz@outlook.com. Corte Bella Volunteers: 24 and counting! As one mother of a patient recently emailed me: “You are angels and a true gift to my daughter and our family. She is 5 years old and has Leukemia. She has been so sad and hasn’t smiled in weeks. Yesterday, her nurse walked into the room and asked her to pick a pillowcase. Naomi picked Hello Kitty and her smile lit up the room. To think that complete strangers care about my daughter, my family during this difficult time has touched my heart. Thank you!”
Pillowcases sewn since January 2015: 2,077 350+ Monthly deliveries of pillowcases to: Phoenix Children’s Hospital Banner Cardon Children’s Banner Children’s at Thunderbird Medical Center
We have been asked by more than 330 pediatric hospitals across the country to expand our mission to ALL children with chronic illness and we have accepted the challenge.

Best of New York Tour Cathi Solla, Travel Consultant at Anderson Travel This past Spring, on April 23rd a group of Corte Bella residents travelled to the “Big Apple” where they visited the many popular and historic sites in Manhattan. The group began with a subway ride to Battery Park, a ferry ride to the Statue of Liberty and on to Ellis Island to see where many of our ancestors arrived from foreign lands. The most touching experience of all was the groups’ visit to the One World Trade Center and the 9/11 Museum. Other trip highlights included stops at the American Museum of Natural History, Central Park, Times Square, the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Radio City Music Hall, the home of the Rockettes. The group also saw “On the Town,” the #1 play on Broadway. According to Kent and Linda Kroupa: “It was an amazing, fun-filled trip seeing all the sites. The shows, shopping, the history of the city and meeting new friends from Corte Bella was exceptional. Seeing Cardinal Dolan and the 9/11 museum were both very humbling.” For Beth Dunn: “the highlights of my trip were going to Mass last Sunday at St. Patrick’s Cathedral and finding out Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Archbishop of New York, was going to say the Mass. It happened to be the 150th anniversary of the New York City Fire Department, so all of the firemen were there in their dress blues with their families. The other highlight was the Spring Spectacular with the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall!” Tour members Marci and Craig noted that the “having cocktails high above the clouds at 65 Lounge at the top of Rockefeller Plaza” was a great experience along with riding the vintage carousel in Central Park. Everyone enjoyed many and diverse cuisines from Irish dishes at Rosie O’Grady’s, Italian food and brick oven pizza at Angelo’s, French bistro fare at Benoit, gourmet dining at Sardi’s, to the Chinese restaurants and the deli sandwiches. The large pretzels and “Dirty Water Franks” (hot dogs) found on every street corner were also a big hit. Ample free time allowed the group to explore neigborhoods, shop and just enjoy all the city had to offer.

A Cool and Refreshing Afternoon in Corte Bella Linda Wright It doesn’t seem to matter how old you are, where you were born, where you grew up or where you lived before coming to Corte Bella. We all love ice cream! This certainly seemed to be the case on Sunday, July 19 when some 165 Corte Bella residents came together to make root beer floats and ice cream sundaes in the Social Hall’s Santa Barbara room. The toppings were varied and plentiful. The ice cream servings were generous and delicious. What a great way to welcome newcomers to our community. What a perfect way to cool down on a hot July afternoon! Thanks to the efforts of the Corte Bella volunteers working on the Welcome Committee and the HOA Events Coordinators, everyone who attended thoroughly enjoyed themselves and they were able to meet and greet the eight new couples who recently moved into Corte Bella. Welcome Committee Chairpersons Carol Drogowski and Pam Ablin (and their merry band of volunteers) along with HOA Events Coordinator Donna Folan did a wonderful job of decorating the room and organizing the event. The Anacapa did an amazing job of assisting with the logistics of this event and their help is so appreciated. Thank you to HOA Board
of Directors President Jim Williams for his warm welcome to our new residents. Once again, in a very delicious and satisfying way, Corte Bella proves this is a great place to live, even in the hot month of July!

Memorial Flags In Sun City West Gerry Berger The Memorial Flags on R H Johnson Boulevard are flown on various federal holidays and if you have noticed, they are flown for a few days and then are gone. The American Legion Mary Ellen Piotrowski Post 94 veterans in Sun City West have been putting up and taking down since 1986. All flags are Memorial Flags, in that these are flags that have either been on a veteran’s casket or otherwise presented to the next of kin at a ceremony. These flags are donated to the Legion Post by family members who want to have the flag flown on RH Johnson Blvd by the Legion. The name of the deceased as well as date of birth,
date of death along with branch of service is written on the flag. Oftentimes families will want to be present at the first opportunity when a flag is donated so a small service is held for them. If you possess a memorial flag and wish to donate it to be flown on RH Johnson Blvd, please contact Gerry Berger, Corte Bella resident, at azlegion94@gmail.com or call her at 623-399-8280. In addition, you may bring the memorial flag to a CB Vets meeting which occurs on the secondTuesday of each month. President Larry Leighton will accept the donated flag and pass it along to the Legion Post.

House Cleaning Specialist Inc. Offering cleaning:
Tom Asmussen, Vice President Corte Bella Vets This past January, Corte Bella Vets sponsored a Golf Tournament for the benefit of the Disabled American Veterans, Department of AZ in which we were able to raise in excess of $20,000. This year we are doubling our efforts and supporting two charities, America’s Mighty Warriors and Arizona Fisher House. Debbie Lee founded America’s Might Warriors, (AMW) after her son Marc was the first Navy SEAL to be killed in Iraq on August 2, 2006. In Marc’s Last Letter Home, he asked for friends and family to “pass on the love and kindness and precious gift of human life”. Since then, America’s Mighty Warriors has been fighting to support our troops, the fallen and their families and to work with like-minded organizations to do the same. AMW is dedicated to raising awareness of the selfless sacrifices our troops and their families make for the freedoms we enjoy every day. When a service member suffers an injustice AMW is there to raise awareness and advocate to correct the situation. Often you will find AMW in the Halls of Congress, in the media, or wherever needed to confront the issue and bring justice to our troops. Fisher House Foundation is best known for a network of comfort homes where military and veterans’ families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving treatment. These homes are located at major military and VA medical centers nationwide, close to the medical center or hospital they serve. A new Fisher House recently broke ground near the Southern Arizona Veterans Hospital and other medical facilities in Tucson, Arizona. When the house is built, Fisher House Foundation will donate it to the Southern Arizona Veterans Administration Health Care Center. Fisher Houses have up to 21 suites, with private bedrooms and baths. Families share a common kitchen, laundry facilities, a warm dining room and an inviting living room. Fisher House Foundation ensures that there is never a lodging fee. Since inception, the program has saved military and veterans’ families an estimated $235 million in out of pocket costs for lodging and transportation.

HEALTH & FITNESS
September 2015: Pickleball Club Robin Mandell What a difference a year makes! For the past several summers, dozens of pickleball players from Corte Bella who wanted to keep playing during the hot months had to go to other communities’ courts (i.e. Arizona Traditions) to catch a game. Without shade or cooling devices at our own courts, it just wasn’t possible to play. This summer you may have seen lots of our club members out playing on our own courts, especially on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday mornings. All the courts are full! What happened? • The installation of the lanai cover made a huge difference in providing shade. • The lanai area itself gives us an ideal place to sit down and relax between games. • Large umbrellas help shield the rising eastern sun. • In late spring, misters were attached to the lanai cover, which brings the temperature on the lanai down at least 10 degrees.
•
The Corte Bella Pickleball Club purchased a swamp cooler, which provides a very welcome further cooling of the covered area.
On Tuesday and Thursdays, our club members have been venturing out for inter-community play with our friends at Arizona Traditions, Trilogy, and the Surprise Municipal Courts. A few social events such as an ice cream social, ladies’ luncheons, and game nights have also been a lot of fun. Now we’re starting to gear up for the busy fall/winter season: • Teams are forming for tournaments. • A schedule of clinics will be set up for new and experienced players alike. • Of course we’ll organize some social get-togethers as well. Wherever you are this summer, get out there on the courts, and we’ll look forward to seeing everyone back at our beautiful home courts of Corte Bella soon. Current Corte Bella Pickleball Club membership: 127!
Community and Golf Course Synergy Reflecting on how very special it is to live in Corte Bella! Jeff Stuart Golf courses do have many benefits to the people who use them and live around them. The most obvious benefit of golf courses is that they offer wonderful recreation to men and women of all ages. In addition, their presence increases property values and the aesthetics of the surrounding area. The course also has a cooling effect on temperatures and reduces noise levels. Perhaps most importantly, a golf course creates or preserves green space on land that might otherwise be paved over. Corte Bella’s golf course is the centerpiece of our community adorned by Mediterranean styled villas and a Santa Barbara-style of architecture. The layout of the golf course is a departure from the desert and semi-tropical designs of neighboring courses, as stands of Italian Cypress and Aleppo Pines as well as almost 800 palm trees sway in the breeze lining the fairways, contributing to the impression of being on a vacation versus your backyard. During the summer the golf course can be played for a fraction of the normal in season rates and we are happily offering our residents a special rate in the month of September. A round of golf will be offered at $30.00 before 9 am, and $25.00 after 9 am. The driving range and putting greens are offered for a daily fee of $15.00, with range balls included. Please call the pro shop to reserve your tee time at 623-474-3610.
Please come join us and your neighbors while conditions are near perfect prior to starting our seasonal overseed process in October. Lessons and clubs are available as well as a fully stocked pro shop, and don’t forget to visit the bar & grill for a cool drink and a bite to eat. We are proud of this community and look forward to getting to know more of you. Please stop by my desk and say hello when you come in to visit.

A Tennis Love Story Vicki Faaborg, Member-At-Large, Corte Bella Tennis Club
David and Robin Culley
In 1997, two people met on the tennis courts at the Los Caballeros Tennis Club in Fountain Valley, California. It was “love at first sight!” says David Culley as he recalls meeting his wife, Robin, or, as he jokes, “it was love at first sight for her!”. They were married in 2001 and have been very happily married for 14 years. Together they have 4 children and 4 grandchildren. They were both born and raised in Southern California.
After attending the University of California at Irvine where he majored in computer science, Dave has worked as a systems programmer. They relocated to Corte Bella in 2006. Robin is the go-to person at Bob’s Variety and she has been employed there for 9 years. Both Dave and Robin plan to retire at the end of 2016. An interesting hobby that they both have enjoyed in the past is square dancing. Robin began square dancing in 1994 while living in California, and Dave began 5 years later. After moving to Corte Bella, they square danced, but due to schedule conflicts, they have temporarily discontinued. Currently, they enjoy sightseeing and hiking, but especially tennis. One of their many goals is to explore Arizona, and they have been to many places throughout the state. During their getaways, they usually try to find accommodations where they can play tennis together. Dave and Robin are avid about tennis, playing several times a week. They have been blessed with good health and have remained injuryfree. When asked about playing together as a couple, Dave quips, “Yes, and we are still married!” Dave plays with the men’s 3.5 group here in Corte Bella and Robin plays with the women’s 3.5 group and also plays on the 3.5 West Valley Senior Women’s League during the fall and spring.
In 2001, Dave’s men’s team from the Los Caballeros Tennis Club qualified for Nationals in Palm Springs, California, and in 2004, both Robin and Dave went to Nationals with that same club but were on different teams. Robin’s 3.5 senior women’s doubles team came in first, which was cause for celebration! Going to Nationals was a great experience for both of them. They also enjoy traveling to Indian Wells, California, every year to watch the BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament. In Corte Bella, they stay busy with working, enjoy going to the gym, and, of course, playing tennis! They plan to add pickle ball and golf to their repertoire upon retiring when they will have more time. They are a very busy couple who enjoy their health, being active, and playing tennis at Corte Bella with their friends. As they both agree, it is a very good life! If there are any Corte Bella residents interested in playing tennis and/or becoming a member of the Corte Bella Tennis Club, please contact any of the Corte Bella Tennis Club board members listed below.
