ASSOCIATION
From the Manager’s Desk It is not uncommon to hear someone say that the desert we live in is lifeless. Personally, I never really understood that point of view. It is really not the case at all and is misunderstood. In fact, because of where you live, you are exposed to all of this wildlife on a regular basis like Mike Arrington, Corte Bella Country Club Association, Inc. General Manager bobcats, coyotes, snakes, rabbits, rodents, birds and various insects and arachnids. Even the plant life thrives and protects itself with thorns and poison and blooms twice a year. Lately, I have had many reports of bobcat sightings and in a few cases they were camped on someone’s property and would not leave for several days. Granted, not much of an effort was made to run them off but they certainly are more comfortable than you would think. If you want them to leave, throw tennis balls at them or squirt them with the hose.
8 | CB Times | The Official Community Magazine of Corte Bella
Additionally, coyotes are also common in the community. I have seen them myself many times. Once, I saw one running on top of the six foot wall that runs along Deer Valley just outside our gate. I am certain it was looking for small dogs or cats with intent of feeding. That brings me to the importance of this article. Both bobcats and coyotes will take small pets right from your backyard and have no trouble with fences whatsoever. Do not leave your pets unattended in the yard for any period of time. These predators have learned the system well and will take advantage of it whenever they can to survive. Some residents think more should be done to prevent this type of thing from happening and I agree. However, it needs to start with the pet owners. Animal control will not address this type of thing when called and the HOA does not have authority or the resources to do anything other than provide fair warning to you. The thought process is that if they are not a threat to humans and help to control other species from overpopulating, like rabbits, then they must be left alone and nature must be allowed to take its own course. Bobcats and Coyotes are not a significant threat to humans and they control the rodent and Rabbit population in places like your lots, our parks and the golf course. Photo credit Martin Scheinholtz

CULINARY
Greetings from the Anacapa Restaurant Thank you to all our residents for making 2015 a great year for us. We have been as busy and full of activity as ever thanks to your patronage. Moving into the summer season we have made some adjustments to the menus. Changes
Executive Chef Dan Haywood, Anacapa Restaurant include new salads, new sandwiches, a focus on smaller petite salad offerings with
dietary counts for calories, fat, protein and carbohydrates listed under our entrée salad selections. As you well know we have always worked to honor special requests in the restaurant. With that being said, if there is something you would like to see, or a favorite we have changed, or a special request you would like to make, please let us know. We will always try to honor the special request immediately if available, and if we cannot we can arrange to have it ready for your next visit with advanced notice. We just ask that if you make any advance reservation for that special request, please honor it because of the extra time and expense we make in preparing it.
Here is a cool recipe for you to try for the hot summer. We look forward to seeing you here at Anacapa, Corte Bella’s neighborhood restaurant.

Home Cured Salmon Salad with Parmesan Crisp
1 cup kosher salt 1 cup granulated sugar 1½ tablespoons lightly crushed white peppercorns 1 # salmon fillet, skin on (scales removed) and pin bones removed Small bunch dill (including stems), coarsely chopped Small bunch Italian parsley (including stems), coarsely chopped Zest of 1 medium lemon
1. Place salt, sugar, and peppercorns in a medium bowl and mix until evenly combined. Rub about 1/4 cup of the mixture onto both sides of the salmon. 2. Mix together dill, parsley, and lemon zest in a separate bowl until evenly combined. Place half the herb mixture in the bottom of a 13-by-9-inch glass baking dish or other wide, shallow, nonreactive container, then spread 1/2 of the remaining sugar-salt mixture over the herbs. Place the salmon on this, and top with the remainder of the sugar-salt mixture and the herbs. 3. Weight the salmon by nesting another glass dish or heavy pan in the first baking dish or container. Place 3 to 4 pounds of weight on top of that (large cans work well) and put the dish in the refrigerator. 4. After 10 to 12 hours, remove the dish from the refrigerator and drain off any liquid. Scrape the layer of salt and herbs off the top of the salmon and flip the fish over. Repack the salt and herbs over the top, replace the weights, and store in the fridge for an additional 12 hours.
5. When the salmon is finished curing, remove it from the pan, rinse under cold water, and pat dry. Serve thinly sliced with Baked Parmesan Crisp or use in your favorite recipe calling for cured or smoked salmon.
Baked Parmesan Crisp • • • •
1 cup grated Parmesan Cheese 1 non stick Baking Pan Nonstick spray Oven at 350 Degrees
Sprinkle parmesan in 4 - 2” circles on sprayed Baking Pan. Place in oven for 6-8 minutes until golden and bubbly. Remove from oven. Immediately loosen the parmesan from the pan with a spatula and let cool. This will harden into 4 small disks. • • • •
1 cup Thinly Sliced Fennel 2 Tbsp Olive oil 1/2 cup Thinly Sliced Red Onion Juice of 1 lemon
In a small bowl, toss together greens, lemon, fennel and onion. Dress with lemon and oil. Arrange on 4 small plates. Place the parmesan crisp on top and top with slices of salmon. Serve as a light first course or can be served as a great small appetizer in smaller portions.

Neighborhood Awareness and Safety Steve DeBoer, NASC Member
MCSO Safety Tips and Crime Activity Information Recently a number of residents have expressed an interest in learning more about what they can do to improve safety at their homes and realize they are in the best position to make their homes safe and secure. There is a wealth of information available on the internet from various governmental and non-profit organizations including the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office which list simple steps each of us can take to this end. The link to the MCSO Safety tips page is http://www.mcso.org/Prevention/SafetyTips/Default.aspx?t=cp. We have posted this link on the Corte Bella website for easy access. Additionally, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Posse Sun City West office at 20450 N. Stardust Blvd. has a brochure titled “Block Watch”. The brochure provides similar information to the MSCO website for those of us who don’t spend a lot of time on the internet. Please note that the brochure does not present information about formal neighborhood watch programs, rather it suggests that we get to know our neighbors and watch out for each other and each other’s homes. Some residents have also asked that they are kept informed about recent issues in Corte Bella and the surrounding community. A good source for this information can be found online at
http://www.raidsonline.com/. The link to this website has also been posted on the Corte Bella website again to make access easier. The information used in this database is provided by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s office and other government agencies. By using this database residents can see what is going on in the community and get the facts as reported by the MSCO. As with any database you need to make sure the filters are properly selected to get the data you desire (area, date range, type of incident, etc.). If a comparison is made between Corte Bella and surrounding communities it becomes apparent that we do indeed live in a very safe community. Diane and I are glad to see so many of our friends and fellow residents truly interested in keeping our community safe while maintaining the open and inviting atmosphere which makes Corte Bella such an outstanding place to live.

John Potter Speaks to Corte Bella Vets Michael McVeigh The Corte Bella Vets were honored to have one of Corte Bella’s residents as the principal speaker for the May meeting. John K. Potter, well-known author, and Air Force Veteran of the Korean War grew up in Muncie, Indiana (Middletown U.S.A.) and is a graduate of Indiana University and the Institute of Far Eastern Languages at Yale University. He served in Korea as a Mandarin Chinese Linguist and later appeared with “Tops in Blue” the allAir Force talent show. He began his TV career as a Page for NBC in New York and went on to oversee, produce and write television programs (soap operas, movies for TV, specials and series) for the three major networks (CBS, ABC & NBC) for 44 years. Some of those assignments included: the Supervising Producer for the company-owned soap operas: AS THE WORLD TURNS, SEARCH FOR TOMORROW, THE GUIDING LIGHT, ANOTHER WORLD, EDGE OF NIGHT and SOMMERSET. He then moved into the prime-time programming where he produced 17 Movies-of-the-Week for ABC, NBC and CBS, ten years of MISS USA, MISS UNIVERSE and MISS TEEN USA specials and THE PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDS for 23 years. He was the Executive in Charge of Production for several series including THE SHIRLEY JONES SHOW and NORTHERN EXPOSURE.
John gave a presentation on why he perceived China is not a military threat based on his Air Force training and his knowledge of Chinese history of not being an “empire building nation”. He also stressed that China is an intelligence threat and the Chinese believe they are the most intellectual people in the world. He believes the recent buildup of naval forces and additional island/ port building is based on their perceived need for additional defense of the homeland attitude not aggression. In regards to Taiwan, they still look at Taiwan as part of China and therefore it does not fall into “empire building” but more into “reunification”. John went on to relate an experience in Korea where he was summoned off his radio site, ordered into dress uniform, and taken to an air base where a Chinese Major had defected with a MIG-17. After some discussions and a lunch of hamburger at the base Officer’s Club, the Major thanked John for his time and effort in perfect English (he had been trained in England). His talk addressed the history of China including the Philosophy and Geography. He also covered the Government and Military, Technology, Population and Westernization. CB Vets program chairman Michael McVeigh introduced John to the 60+ attendees and thanked John for his outstanding presentation and service. CB Vets President, Larry Leighton presided over the meeting.

Going Back to the American Roots Paul and Denise Jacobs Whether you are interested in the origins of Soul music, R&B, the famous mid-50’s and 60’s Rock n’ Roll era or the Civil War period with its gorgeous houses, plantations and cotton trade or the modern luxury of beach resorts, famous golf courses and plenty of bridge clubs, you can find all of this in the States of North and South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee. For music lovers, Memphis is definitely the place to be. Even if you are not an Elvis fan, Graceland is a “must“ visit. You will leave Graceland as an Elvis fan. The “Platinum Tour” is highly recommended. Count three hours to get around. In downtown Memphis you cannot miss the “Sun Studio” visit where some of the biggest stars recorded their albums: Elvis Presley, Otis Redding, Jerry Lee Lewis, Clark Perkins, Johny Cash. This studio is still making records today. The “STAX American Soul Museum” is another icon of the mid-50’s and 60’s recording sites. It was closed after the assassination of Martin Luther King in 1968. Also worth a visit is the Rock n’ Roll and Soul Museum that offers an excellent self-guided audio tour. If you like ribs, we recommend the “Rendezvous” restaurant. The best in the US and maybe in the world as we Europeans are not per-se, rib specialists. For history lovers, covering the mid-1800’s with plantation homes, huge mansions and Civil War facts, Charleston and Savannah are the cities to visit. The highlights of Savannah include its historic town with a trolley guided tour for the explanations. If your legs feel like it, an afternoon walking tour will give you an even better view of the old town. Not to be missed: the River Street. This used to be the cotton trade center. Today you will see stores
and restaurants in the original cotton buildings. Recommended restaurant: The Shrimp Factory. NOT to be missed: Leopold’s Ice Cream parlor ranked number 3 in the US and number 5 worldwide. The bad news: once you have tasted their ice creams, you will not appreciate another cone anywhere else!! Highlights of Charleston: historic downtown called “The Battery”. Gorgeous original mansions from the 1800’s. One place to visit: the Calhoun house (24,000 sq/ft – 35 rooms – 35 fireplaces!!). The “Magnolia Plantation” will give you an excellent idea of what the life on a plantation looked like in those times. If you like “fluff” - luxury, beach, golf and wildlife/nature, then Hilton Head will give you all these options. This is the place to enjoy for outside activities and just relaxing. For the active ones, you can walk for miles and enjoy every step. Two days in a row, we covered 22,500 steps (Garmin gadget) or 11 miles … and enjoyed it!! Mandatory restaurant to visit: ELA’S BLUE WATER Grill in the Shelter Cove. Pricy but out of this world quality wise. We have been traveling all over the place worldwide. We decided it was time to discover more of this beautiful and rich-in-history country. We really enjoyed it and recommend it to anyone who likes to discover interesting and historical places. If anyone would be interested to plan a trip to these areas, feel free to call us with any questions. We have a lot of information on where to stay, where to eat and what to do. We can be reached at 623-217-2803.
Transportation by Imagination For those of you who joined the CB Players in the “Hollywood Hills”, Baroness von Cobra (both of them) hope you enjoyed the hospitality, the pretzels, and by the way, Adolph is feeling better, thank you, after all those mean things said to him. For those who did not transport to California, think film noir…think the 40’s… unleash your imagination for the minimal became magical for two nights as the Hollywood Hills superimposed itself upon Corte Bella. The “usual” troupe – Ernie, John, Kay, Patti and Regina – were joined by Don Shaw and Larry Wieland in a gothic mansion high atop the Hills filled with shtick, clichés and wannabe’s. The Baroness von Cobra and her “faithful” staff spied for the Third Reich, reporting to Berlin, seeking to discover a secret weapon. Adolph, a snake of many talents, and only one of the creatures
that crawled through the night, was joined by Kongo, an escaped gorilla from the zoo looking for who knows what or whom. There were secret agents, with secret agendas and secret friends. Secrets everywhere, especially in the end as Halloween drew to a close and all secrets were exposed. It was Hollywood, all shtick, no realism. Just clichés and wannabe’s and a fun night was had by all. You could hear the laughter down by The Grand. This fall, CB Players, our in-community theater, would like to plan another production. Are you an interested thespian, experienced or not? Is the backstage more to your liking? If “lights, action, camera” sends you goose-bumps, or even not, contact Kay Steik and join CB Players. Look for our emails late summer and join us.

News From Phoenix Children’s Hospital Earlier this year, Phoenix Children’s Hospital opened and dedicated its brand new state-of-the-art Bubba Watson and PING Golf Motion Analysis Lab. Located in the hospital’s Herbert J. Louis, MD Pediatric Orthopedic Center, it is the sixth largest program of its kind in the United States. The Motion Analysis Lab is drastically improving gait evaluation processes for patients by using revolutionary assessment tools to better treat children and adolescents who have movement disorders or walking difficulties caused by conditions like Cerebral Palsy. Historically, treatment plans for gait dysfunction have been prescribed based simply on visual observations of a child’s movement. But in the Lab, specialists from Phoenix Children’s Hospital are able to obtain exclusive data from a computerassisted motion analysis of the way patients move and walk. The new technology is invaluable as studies show nearly 90 percent of patients’ surgical plans change following their evaluation in a “gait lab.” Phoenix Children’s Motion Analysis Lab is the first in the state of Arizona and one of only 40 in the United States. Its construction was made possible thanks to the generosity of professional golfer and two-time Masters Champion, Bubba Watson and golf
equipment maker, PING Golf. Collectively they donated $250,000 to the Children’s Hospital for the gait lab and for whom the lab is named. “Gait plays an important role in a child’s health and it is critical that gait disorders be evaluated properly,” said Steve Schnall, the Hospital’s Senior Vice President and Chief Development Officer. “We are truly honored to receive this gift from Bubba and PING which is helping improve the way we serve our patients and resulting in healthier futures for hundreds of children each year.” For more information about the Bubba Watson and PING Golf Motion Analysis Lab or supporting Phoenix Children’s Hospital, please contact Chris Sar in the Office of Planned Giving at 602-933-2678 or csar@phoenixchildrens.com.
Yarnell Fire Department How fortunate we are to live in this beautiful community and enjoy life to its fullest. The residents of Corte Bella have a unique opportunity to help out the Yarnell Fire Dept. As most of you remember, on June 30, 2013 nineteen Granite Mountain Hot Shots made the ultimate sacrifice losing their lives fighting the Yarnell Hill fire. Yarnell firefighters are primarily a volunteer fire dept. with only four full time fire fighters on staff. As a volunteer, they are paid $15 every time the fire truck goes out the door on a call. There are sixteen volunteers as well as four full time fire fighters.
My name is Marc D’Olivo and I am a Corte Bella resident. I represent Aflac insurance as an independent insurance agent and would like to ask for your help to provide some security for these brave men and women. Our goal is to collect $7,000 yearly, to provide each fire fighter with an accident policy. In the event of an accident on or off the job, the policy would provide income to help cover their living expenses. An Aflac policy sends money directly to the fire fighter, in other words a cash payout for them to use as they see fit. The town of Yarnell is unable to afford the policies for their fire fighters because of lost revenue that occurred when homes were lost in the fire and have yet to be rebuilt. The town is hoping to recover financial so they can pay for the 2017 policy premiums. Anyone interested in donating, please make your checks payable to Yarnell Fire Dept. Please mail or drop off your donation to Marc D’Olivo, 13718 W. Juniper Drive, Sun City West, AZ, 85375. If you have questions, please call me at 408-887-4192. Thank you for your consideration.

Notes from the Upper MidwestBella John Eakins Emilie and I are scared of the July and August heat, so we escape to Minnesota for the summer. And we have to get the vegetables in, the perennial garden groomed, the grandkids and greatgrands seen, and friends and neighbors visited. All this takes us away for much longer than necessary. Some of you who live year round in Corte Bella may envy us our respite from the desert’s dry heat. But we usually run into things we weren’t looking for. So we came back mid-April this year to 75° weather—for a couple of days. Then the highs went back into the 50s, and we had wood fires, day and night, in the downstairs heater and the first-floor fireplace for the next three weeks. Then fires only in the fireplace and usually just at night—eventually not even every night. (Oh, did I mention the trees to be cut and firewood split?) We had what might be our last fire on June 4th, when we had guests and it felt damp, and not at all warm, in the afternoon. During May, we got to attend grandchildren’s soccer and baseball games. For four of those games, we wore coats, scarves, hats, earmuffs, and gloves and had blankets to wrap up in. Even with that preparation, the wind blew hard, chilling us thoroughly. Brrrrr! We left early. But it will soon be too warm for us to comfortably take care of the garden and yard: once it’s above 70° all day, it’s hotter than I like. And the bugs will be out in the heat: mosquitoes, of course, and gnats and black flies. Yesterday hit 81°. And we had a pleasant evening at the ball game. But today (June 9) it’s supposed to hit 92. This is just a summer teaser though: It will be in the 70s again for the weekend. Between the rains we have, however, managed to get the vegetables in, the perennials in shape, and the annuals planted. Things look pretty green with sprinkles of flowers around our three acres. Occasionally we can even look up from our weeding to take it all in. If you’re passing within a hundred miles of the Mayo Clinic “North” this summer, we invite you to call and stop by for a beer on the patio. Soon we may be too decrepit or too smart to come back so early from Corte Bella and stay so long, just to have our own vegetables and to share three fine months of beautiful garden with mosquitoes. Then we’ll sell this place. When we reach that point, we can head out of Corte Bella in late June, see a few people on the way, and spend July and August in Italy, which Emilie has wanted to do for years. But we’ll probably never be brave enough to spend July and August with you, no matter how dry 120° may be.

Machu-Picchu Muriel Valle Two years ago we were checking our Bucket List and looking for places to visit. It hit us like a ton of bricks: SOUTH AMERICA. If one wants to visit the end of the world, sail the Straits of Magellan and round Cape Horn it had to be a cruise. But no trip to our southern hemisphere would be complete without Peru and Machu Picchu. So we took off on a three week journey that included all of the above - but for this story we’ll deal only with Peru and Machu Picchu. Our journey began with a flight to Lima, Peru, the capital city of 8 million people located on the Pacific coast and gateway to the Andes Mountains high country – home of Machu Picchu. Established by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro, it is an interesting and vibrant city, with a mixture of pre-Columbian, Spanish Colonial and modern architecture. We toured the city as much as an overnight flight and time would permit since the next morning we were flying to Cusco. Shopping, office buildings and
Cathedrals all stand next to each other. One of our favorite things in Lima was a little park close to our hotel that was a microcosm of everyday life in Lima – families out & about enjoying the lovely weather and old fashioned boot blacks shining shoes while their customers read their newspapers. In the morning we took a relatively short flight to Cusco. All tours to Machu Picchu begin in Cusco, which is at an elevation of 11,500 ft. This is done to help you adjust to the elevation and to avoid altitude sickness. Cusco is located in the Sacred Valley and, as the gateway city to Machu Picchu, is a major tourist destination with close to 2 million visitors a year. Our hotel – an old converted convent -was located in Urubamba and so the bus journey there was a tour as well. We first visited an Inca fortress called Sacsayhuaman, where our guide explained that the walls of the structures were constructed using stones, sometimes weighing several tons, which were fitted together

without mortar and are still standing today. The Incas used indigenous people to help in the construction of their cities. What is really fascinating is that they made these people citizens and they had a very sophisticated system whereby they would rotate the workers in all of the various jobs, such a hauling stones or building the terraces they used for their farming. From there we also had panoramic views of the city of Cusco and enjoyed visiting with the llamas which are even more adorable & cuddly up close and personal. Finally we had the opportunity to bargain with vendors at the market in Pisac – always the shopping for the “yankee touristas”! After lunch and a folklore show at a local restaurant in Cusco, we continued the tour of the Sacred Valley by bus, which was fascinating. We passed many little villages and Andean farms where the land is still ploughed by oxen and the crops are picked by hand. In the villages, each household had either a cow or a goat and sometimes both tethered outside, which were used for milk and eventually food. Most of the houses in the area had a cluster of two small ceramic bulls with 2 water jugs on the roofs. These are known as Torito de Pucara, and are not merely a roof decoration, but serve to honor Pachamamma (or Mother Earth). The bulls represent happiness, wealth and, with the water jugs, fertility. This is just one of the many examples of the mixture of Catholic and native religions. Our final stop in Urubamba was a
place called Ollantaytambo which is another well preserved Inca settlement. This site is the best example of the kancha, which is the most common form of Incan architecture and is a rectangular enclosure housing three or more rectangular building around a central courtyard. The most famous kancha is the Temple of the Sun at Machu Picchu. The highlight of this trip is, of course, Machu Picchu which has an elevation of 8,000 feet above sea level. The journey from Urubamba to Cusco to Machu Picchu is almost as enjoyable as seeing the site itself - a breathtaking bus journey through an ever changing landscape, followed by a ride in a glass-domed train to the Andean city of Agues Calientes and finally another bus ride to Machu Picchu. The first glimpse of this ancient site takes your breath away and nothing can quite prepare you for the experience. Machu Picchu literally means “Old Mountain” and is located in a tropical mountain forest on the Eastern slopes of the Peruvian Andes. The city was built around 1450.and abandoned after 100 years. It was rediscovered in 1911 by explorer Hiram Bingham. The theory is that it was built as a retreat for Incan rulers and it is estimated that as many as 1200 people could have lived there. There are more than 150 buildings including baths, houses & sanctuaries. The site stretches over an impressive 5 mile distance with more than 3,000 stone steps linking its many levels. There are several distinct sections of the city including a farming zone, a residential neighborhood for the lower classes, a royal district and a sacred area. Machu Picchu’s most famous structures are The Temple of the Sun and the Intihuatana stone, a sculpted granite rock that is believed to have functioned as a solar clock or calendar. The stone is arranged to point directly at the sun during the winter solstice. Intihuatana is also called “The Hitching Post” because it was believed to hold the sun in its place along its annual path in the sky. At midday on March 21st. and September 21st, the equinoxes, the sun stands almost above the pillar casting no shadow at all. This is believed to be the reason that the Incas chose this particular site to build their city. A highlight of anybody’s visit to Machu Picchu is the climb up to the Guardhouse, which is not an overly impressive structure, but is a must because of the spectacular views it affords. One gets excellent photographic shots of Machu Picchu itself, Huayna Picchu (Small Mountain) and the Urubamba River far below. Not far from the Guardhouse, a perennial spring is the source of water for the inhabitants. A water supply canal brings the water to three fountains near the Temple of the Sun. Water continues to be channeled downhill with a total of 16 fountains. This was the domestic water supply for the Inca residents. The Guardhouse is also the end of the Inca Trail which is a 24 hour hike which, needless to say, we did not do. After our Machu Picchu, Cusco and Sacred Valley visit we retraced our steps back to Lima and then flew on to Santiago and rode down to meet our ship in Valparaiso to continue our once in a lifetime adventure. But the first part - into the mountains – was incomparable. It is a trip not to be taken lightly, as it is grueling especially combined with the altitude. But nothing can ever quite prepare you for a visit to magical Machu Picchu. We would highly recommend putting it on your bucket list.

In the Loop Bob Rosenberg This month’s article is dedicated to solving a problem that has plagued most of us for our entire life. Thanks to my wife’s diligent and thorough search of the internet she discovered we have been tying our shoelaces wrong all of our lives. All of those times wasted bending over our shoes in the middle of the day retying and defying people to walk around us. According to Runner’s World we have been tying a granny knot instead of a reef knot and they give the appropriate demonstration on the proper way to tie shoes. On the TED website Terry Moore has a five minute demonstration of tying shoes the new way. When I think of all the years I spent from kindergarten onward to adulthood and the hours dealing with the reluctant shoelace I realize that a week of my life was wasted. When I think of all the time that I spent undoing the double knotted shoelaces I realize another week was wasted. To think I could have started my retirement two weeks sooner makes me wonder what other things I could have done differently in my life, such as learning to color between the lines sooner.
Have a good rest of the summer, especially those of you leaving our fair community to cooler climes.
Let the Good Times Roll Joel Piaskowski, Anacapa Marketing Group What do you get when you combine the creative talents and hard work of The Anacapa Restaurant staff along with the Corte Bella Events Group? An awesome Happy Hour that has set a new standard for Corte Bella. Approximately 250 people showed up on May 5th “It was a very fun celebration, and we both had a wonderful at The Anacapa to celebrate Cinco De Mayo! This day is evening” Marsha Judge and the celebration of the Battle of Darlene Schilf Puebla which took place on May 5th, 1862 when Mexican troops defeated the French army. The Anacapa offered special themed appetizers and drinks that were delicious. The special drinks also quenched the thirst of all the seniors and senioritas in attendance, as it was a warm afternoon. The kitchen, server and bartender staff rose to the occasion to handle all the orders and provide great service. The CB Events Group again did a superb job at the decorations including banners, centerpieces, sombreros, Mexican flags, themed music and much more.
“The Cinco de Mayo Happy Hour was an excellent experience. It was well organized and the drinks and food made for a fun Happy Hour”. Bill and Liz Blake
So, the next time there is a “Themed” Happy Hour at The Anacapa, make sure you and your friends are part of the celebration.

Corte Bella HOA 2015 Annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner Linda Wright The late Erma Bombeck summed up the value of volunteers when she said “Volunteers are the only human beings on the face of the earth who reflect this nation’s compassion, unselfish caring, patience, and just plain love for one another.” Within Corte Bella there are quite a number of residents who continually demonstrate their commitment to our community through their volunteer involvement in a wide and varied number of activities. Acting on behalf of the HOA Board of Directors, Corte Bella Events Coordinators Jolene Piaskowski, Donna Folan and Colleen Miller organized a recognition dinner event to show appreciation for all of our community volunteers. Almost 100 persons attended the event held on April 13 and enjoyed a wonderful assortment of dining delights prepared by Anacapa’s Chef Dan Haywood featuring ethnic food stations of Asian, Italian, and All-American steakhouse dishes as well as a beautiful selection of desserts. Food and Beverage Manager Fred Hernandez and his staff did their usual amazing job of serving all the attendees. The event tables were decorated in keeping with the theme of “Busy Bees” who “Bee-lieve” in volunteering, who “Bee” kind and volunteer, who will “Bee” the change we want to see at Corte Bella, who are “Busy Bees” making Corte Bella the community it is, and who know “Bee-ing” a volunteer pays off with honey. It’s true that “Volunteers at Corte Bella create great Buzz” and they make us “Buzz” with joy for all their volunteering. The dining experience was followed by a brief program which acknowledged and recognized the following HOA committees and groups: • Board of Directors • Government Affairs Committee • Finance Committee • Neighborhood Awareness and Safety Committee • Corte Bella Website Volunteers • Long Term Planning Committee • Technology Committee • Building and Grounds Committee • Events Group committee • Corte Bella Times Magazine volunteers
Master of Ceremonies, Joel Piaskowski, introduced the volunteers in attendance from each group and highlighted the group’s major accomplishments for the past year. MC Joel finished off with an entertaining rendition of “The Top 10 Signs You Are Volunteering Just a Little Too Much”, which went something like this: #10. You spend more than 50% of your therapy session taking about your volunteer job. #9. You send all of the emails from your group directly to your spam folder despite the fact you are the group chairperson! #8. You receive voice mails with messages like “We know you’ll say yes to anything so we thought we’d exploit your time and energy just one more time to serve on the ‘Friends of the Endangered Crawdaddies Committee’.” #7. You fantasize that if you won the lottery, the first thing you’d do would be to start another volunteer group to put the one you volunteer for out of business. #6. Your volunteer service is so stressful and your use of medication has increased so much that your health insurance company has offered a large donation if you will resign. #5. You dread a call from your organization to volunteer so much that you have a written list of excuses posted on the refrigerator in the kitchen. #4. Your spouse is threatening to name your volunteer group as the co-respondent in your divorce proceedings. #3. You receive email meeting invites from family members just so they can catch up and tell you what’s going on in their lives. #2. You’re single and you meet a nice attractive man or woman at the bar one night and really hit it off. When the time comes you ask “Would you like to come over for a drink and let me show you my ‘by-laws’?” #1. You and another member of the volunteer group have definitely decided on resigning. The only thing you haven’t decided on for sure is who will be Thelma and who will be Louise. Thank you to each and every resident who commits to any volunteer effort within our community. Please know you are appreciated!

French Open Tournament and Social Vicki Faaborg, Member-At-Large, Corte Bella Tennis Club On Saturday, the 23rd of May, Corte Bella tennis came alive as players converged upon all 5 courts to celebrate the French Open with an informal and fun competition. It wasn’t Roland Garros in Paris, France, the courts were not clay and no topseeded competitors were playing, but the spirit of the French Open was totally evident. The balles de tennis (tennis balls) were flying over the les filets (nets) on every court, propelled by the la raquettes (tennis rackets), with flawless form from our own Corte Bella un joueurs de tennis (tennis players). There were no fans on the sidelines but that didn’t deter the players from having great fun. Some were in full French attire while others simply came to play without the French flair. Following our version of the tournoi de roland garros, participants enjoyed a magnifique “French” buffet at our own lanai. Players brought salades, entrees, and les desserts to share.

Corte Bella Hikers Steve Downing
Our first year as a hiking group was a huge success. Our inaugural hike was Boynton Canyon in Sedona with six hikers. We now have forty eight hikers in the group of which twenty hike on a regular basis. The trails we hike and the mountains we climb are the same as the younger ‘kids’ of the valley. Our philosophy is not how fast we complete the hike but that we finish. I think most active members would attest to the feel of accomplishment when the hike or climb up the trail has been completed. Additional trails we hiked in the 2014-2015 season: • Bell Trail along Wet Beaver Creek • Turkey Creek in Sedona • Woodchute and Groom Creek in Prescott National Forest • White Tank Mountain Trails • Cave Creek GO John Trail • Desert Vista Trail to Union Peak • Spur Cross in the Tonto National Forest • Browns Ranch • McDowell Mountain Trails • Camelback • Tom Thumb • Piestewa Peak • Apache Wash in the Phoenix Sonoran Preserve • Peoria Local Trails-Sunrise and Westwing • Elephant Mountain • Yavapai Point Trail at Lake Pleasant • Palo Verde Trail at Bartlett Lake • Soldiers Pass/Brins Mesa in Sedona In addition to our 27 hikes, we scheduled two cycling trips along the New River Trail and Arizona Canal Trail. We also did a Full Moon hike to Union Peak where we were able to hike at night without use of headlamps or flashlights. We hope next year to add more cycling to the mix and maybe even a kayak meetup on Lake Pleasant. We closed out the hiking season with a wonderful social at Bob & Elaine Fletchers home. It was nice getting to visit, without elevated heart rates and labored breathing from a hill we had just climbed. The Corte Bella Hikers are currently on summer hiatus and will resume late September of 2015. If you would like to join us for the 2015-2016 season, please email Steve Downing at sd85383@gmail.com.
