ASSOCIATION

The Annual Meeting As an owner in the community, you are automatically a member of the association and cannot opt out as long as you own property in the community. Unlike the monthly board meeting designed so the Board of Directors can conduct the community business and vote on issues, the Annual Meeting is designed for you, the owner. The business that is conducted at the Annual Meeting requires a vote of all members. Mike Arrington, Corte Bella Country Club Association, Inc. General Manager

Photo courtesy of CB resident, Marty Scheinholtz

As a corporation (Corte Bella Country Club Association, Inc.), the association’s governing documents and the Arizona Revised Statutes require that an Annual Meeting take place each and every year. The Annual Meeting is your opportunity to help elect those who will govern the association for the next two years and to vote on any other issue at hand that requires a vote of the members under the law. At this meeting, it is typical to receive detailed updates on the state of the community association. There is a review of the budget and financial health

8 | CB Times | The Official Community Magazine of Corte Bella

of the community with updates about ongoing projects as well as a review of past accomplishments. Future planning may be revealed as well. Remember, all of this is financed with the dues you are required to pay as a member. Now that I have provided a basic explanation of an Annual Meeting, the primary reason for this article and what I would like you to take away as an association member and resident of Corte Bella is this; there are 1650 homes in Corte Bella and each home or lot is afforded 1 vote in all voting matters. Of those homes, the attendance at a Corte Bella Annual Meeting is usually about 150 people. Of course, most of those are co-owners and represent one lot. This is an opportunity for you to be heard and make a difference in the community you call home. Decisions will be made on your behalf and I appeal to you to take advantage of this opportunity to affect those decisions. It will be a year until you have another chance, so please attend this very important meeting if possible and at the very least, please return your completed ballot if you cannot attend. Please contact me if you have any questions about the ballot because it is important to make sure it is filled out correctly and completely. Thank you to a very savvy, hard working and dedicated 2015 Board of Directors who have put forth their very best effort in representing the community well. I am proud of what has been achieved and the difference they have made together.

Board Talk: Director Election As a follow up to last month’s article, here is the latest on the 2016 Director Election, along with some election and voting thoughts. There are five candidates competing for the three available positions in this election. The candidates are: Paul Knowles, Dan Luparello, Michael McVeigh, Dave Ornstein, and Michael Weiner. Thanks to each of them for putting their name in the Jim Williams, President, Board of Directors

hat. It is always gratifying to know there are individuals in Corte Bella who are willing to go the extra mile for the community. You should have received the Notice of Annual Meeting and Election materials mailed in late January. The election package includes the ballot with voting envelope and candidate applications with their answers to the six questions from residents. If you haven’t received the Notice and Ballot packet by February 10th, please contact the HOA Office directly at 623-328-5068, or email Paula Coudright (HOA Operations Coordinator) at PCoudright@ cortebellacca.com. Meet and Greet the Candidate events were held on January 20th and 27th. Residents had the opportunity to listen to the candidates, ask questions, and meet and speak with candidates individually. These candidates bring diverse skills and experience to the table, as is clear from their applications, their declared perspective, and their answers to resident questions. Please take the time to carefully read the ballot materials. An important consideration is to maintain the Board’s responsive, positive focus and approach, sustain community harmony and

participation, and continue being diligent on important HOA matters. Discuss with your significant other and with neighbors and friends your viewpoint about the candidates, and what each of them can bring to the Board and to the community’s progress and well-being. Regarding Voting and the Ballot: Make sure you vote! If you haven’t sent or handed in your ballot, then please do so. It is important, this is your Community, and you certainly should participate and make your voice heard. On ballots: Make sure your address is on the ballot envelope. Vote for a maximum of three candidates, and make sure your ballot arrives at the HOA Office by 12:00 noon on March 1, 2016. If your address is not on the ballot envelope, or if you vote for more than three candidates, then your vote will not be counted. A side note: About half of the community voted in the last several elections. Approximately 5 to 10% of the ballots were disqualified for being blank (ballot or envelope), incorrect or no address on the envelope, voting for more than three candidates, late submission, and other errors. That means that votes from 50 to 80 residents were not counted. In one election there was a spread of only six votes between three candidates, twenty-four votes between four candidates – so the votes not counted could easily impact election results. If your ballot is not turned in or sent to the HOA on time, you can still bring your ballot to the Annual Meeting for your vote to be included in the election count. Otherwise, chalk it up to a lost opportunity. Also, it is not too late to volunteer as a vote counter or ballot inspector. Let the General Manager, Michael Arrington, know if you are interested by contacting him at Michael. Arrington@fsresidential.com or 623-328-5068. Thanks for supporting the HOA and Board with your vote. Results will be announced at the Annual Meeting. Hope to see you there!

CULINARY

Mardi Gras Party Time! One of my favorite styles of cuisine is Southern Creole Cooking. I renewed that love for low country cuisine a few years ago when I was able to visit New Orleans. This is a really great recipe for a traditional meat and rice dish from the south. The ingredients for jambalaya and gumbo are very similar. Enjoy, and join us at the Anacapa for an awesome Fat Tuesday celebration!!!!

Executive Chef Dan Haywood, Anacapa Restaurant

• 3 ounces apple wood-smoked bacon, diced • 1/4 pound andouille sausage, quartered lengthwise, cut crosswise into 1/2-inch cubes • 1/4 pound pork tasso or smoked ham (such as Black Forest), cut into 1/2-inch cubes • 1 pound shelled shrimp • 1 large onion, chopped • 1/2 celery stalk, chopped • 1 small red bell pepper, coarsely chopped • 1 small green bell pepper, coarsely chopped • 2-3 large skinless boneless chicken thighs or breasts, cut into 1- to 1 1/2-inch pieces • 1/2 tablespoons paprika • 1 tsp chopped fresh thyme • 1 tsp chili powder • 1 pinch cayenne pepper – to taste • Salt and pepper to taste • 1 10 oz can diced tomatoes • 1 – 1.5 cups chicken broth • 1 cup long-grain white rice, uncooked • 2 green onions, chopped (about 2 cups) • 1 small bunch chopped fresh Italian parsley

Jambalaya

Directions

1. Position rack in bottom third of oven and preheat to 350°F.

2. Cook bacon in very large pot over medium-high heat until brown but not yet crisp, stirring often, 8 to 10 minutes. 3. Add andouille sausage and smoked ham. Sauté until meats start to brown in spots, about 5-7 minutes. 4. Add onions, celery and bell peppers. Cook until vegetables begin to soften, stirring occasionally, 10 to 12 minutes. 5. Mix in chicken. Cook until outside of chicken turns white, stirring often, 5 to 6 minutes. 6. Mix in paprika, thyme, chili powder, and cayenne. Cook 1 minute. 7. Add diced tomatoes and broth; stir to blend well. Add more cayenne, if desired. Mix in rice. Check seasoning and add salt if necessary. 8. Bring jambalaya to boil. Add shrimp. Cover pot. 9. Place in oven and bake until rice is tender and liquids are absorbed, 35-45 minutes. Uncover pot. Mix chopped green onions into jambalaya; sprinkle jambalaya with chopped parsley and serve. Note: Jambalaya can be done on stove top but the bottom can stick and burn without a heavy duty thick bottom pot.

Cutting the Cord: Part 2 Stan Sacha, Corte Bella Computer Club At our January club meeting, we had a full house to discuss the second part of our series on Cord Cutting. As explained last month, Cord Cutting refers to getting rid of your cable or satellite TV service to save money.

1. Despite our common demographics, everyone’s interests are different. Consequently, everyone’s requirements and design for cord cutting may be a little different from your neighbors. There isn’t a “one-size-fits-all” solution.

Fellow resident, David Lazear, guided the club through his personal solution for cutting the cord. It was a very informative and spirited discussion, with audience members asking many good questions as well as providing some interesting experiences that benefitted all.

2. Technology in this area is rapidly evolving. Even antennas, which have been around since the beginning of TV, are still evolving due to the result of interest in cord cutting. Content providers are rapidly evolving as well. What was the best solution in 2015 may not be in 2016. As is everything related to technology, accept that your solutions may not have a long life.

The focus for Part 2 was on the design considerations related to the installation of an Over-the-Air (OTA) antenna in your home. It’s a significant part of the overall strategy involved with cord cutting. With the antenna, we can get crisp high-definition TV broadcasts for only the upfront cost of the antenna installation. For some of us, that’s all we need, although admittedly many of us are too attached to some shows that aren’t received locally, or that are available by going to the Internet. In both parts of the series so far, I’ve emphasized some points to remember:

Check out our notes on these sessions at our club website (http:// www.cortebellaclub.org/notes). At our next meeting on February 4, we will take a closer look at the hardware involved. As mentioned earlier, there are many solutions, each with strengths and weaknesses. We will learn about them well enough to point you on the path to a concept that’s best for you. See you at the next meeting!

COMMITTEE

Financial Summary – Twelve Months Ended Dec 31, 2015 Jeff Ablin, Finance Committee Chairperson

Results of Operations

Budget Comparison Report Twelve Months Ended December 31, 2015 ($ in thousands) Favorable

For the twelve month period ending December 31, 2015, excluding reserve contributions, we realized a net operating surplus of $77,500. This was $147,700 favorable compared to the budgeted deficit of $70,200. These are unaudited and subject to change in the final annual audit by Butler Hansen. Following is a brief discussion of departmental results and significant variances compared to budget:

Results of Operations

Administration – $ 1,897,600 surplus, $59,300 favorable – Favorable: Salary & wage and related employment costs were lower due to delays in filling a new position and periodic vacancies in the HOA office. Collection cost reimbursements for delinquent accounts and late fees were aggressively pursued and were partially offset by higher legal expense. Bad debt allowance was reduced to be more in line with actual delinquent assessments. Audit/tax, reserve study fees, as well as printing and postage were lower than anticipated. Unfavorable: Higher than budget costs were experienced for computer support, office expense, equipment rental and legal.

Facilities: Expense

Facilities – $1,179,600 total expense, $43,600 favorable – Favorable: Water and sewer costs were $48,000 below budget due partially to ample rain, but primarily to improved water management efforts. Employee benefit costs, Trane HVAC costs, and pools supplies/repair and maintenance were also under budget. Unfavorable: Gas, equipment and sign maintenance cost for the new CB signage. Telephone costs were higher due to a staff addition, phone upgrades/conversion to Verizon and expanded cable for sports packages and HD TV upgrades. Guardhouse – $172,600 total expense, $9,600 favorable – Favorable: Gate repairs and administrative costs for forms and supplies were significantly lower than budget. HOA Events – $1,000 surplus, $1,000 favorable – Favorable: Food and beverage expenses were significantly reduced due to a reduction in events and ticket sales. Unfavorable: Ticket sales and decoration expenses for Christmas. Landscape – $380,100 total expense, $8,800 unfavorable – Favorable: Pest control expense was lower than budget. Unfavorable: The tree pruning program was expanded beyond budget levels and landscape “other” was over budget due to the lanai landscaping project. Restaurant – $45,200 surplus, $30,700 favorable – Favorable: Food, liquor and wine revenues, as well as room rentals in the social hall were significantly better due to higher activity levels. Advertising expense was also favorable. Unfavorable:

Unbudgeted promotional discounts associated with the half price happy hour appetizers in Q1, discount pricing for residents and credit card discount fees were major cost factors. Salary & wage and related expenses for the kitchen were higher primarily to support the increased level of activity but also due to difficulty in adjusting to seasonal activity. Spa – $23,600 surplus, $1,000 unfavorable – Favorable: Facials revenue exceeded budget and operating supplies were reduced. Unfavorable: Massage and esthetician costs exceeded revenues due to shortfalls in massage, waxing, permanent makeup and electrolysis. This was attributable in part due to expanded competitive activity in the area. Fitness – $165,900 deficit, $9,100 favorable – Favorable: Personal training revenues net of expenses exceeded budget. Operating supply costs were lower. Unfavorable: Salary & wages marginally exceeded budget.

grew as we added transfer fees from home re-sales to fund the account, while adding features to fitness and the guard house and improving Wi-Fi and audio visual capabilities. Our cash position is sufficient to meet our operating needs. From an investment standpoint, we continue to maintain our conservative investment strategy to minimize risk and ensure liquidity, while seeking yield improvement opportunities. We added a preferred stock ETF in June to generate dividend income and plan on proposing additional alternate investment scenarios to the Board to enhance returns, with minimum risk. Details on all financial statements can be found on the Corte Bella website under HOA>Community documents>Financials. Please feel free to contact any member of the Finance Committee regarding questions or suggestions.

Paint Maintenance and Granite Replacement – $8,400 surplus, $4,000 favorable. Favorable: Painting expense was lower than budget, even with an expanded scope.

Reserve Funds Repair/Replacement and Street funds – $368,200 surplus, $103,000 favorable. Favorable: The favorable variances were primarily due to planned projects that did not take place, including spa heaters, pool deck recoat, asphalt seal and fire alarm control panel. Fountain repairs were also lower than plan. Interest income exceeded plan primarily due to the June investment in the PFF preferred stock ETF. Unfavorable: Conversely, most of the unfavorable variances were due to unbudgeted projects including common area Wi-Fi replacement and upgrade, HVAC compressor replacement, gate controller loop replacement and restaurant equipment. Capital projects – $21,000 surplus, $6,700 favorable. Favorable: Reserve fund fees from home re-sales, used to fund capital improvements, were $21,800 above plan. Favorable results were also associated with budgeted projects that have been delayed or cancelled, including architect study of space requirements and new reverse osmosis equipment. Unfavorable: Unbudgeted projects completed included the golf utility cart, guard house podium and spin bikes for the fitness center. The audio-visual project was marginally over budget.

Summary Overall, 2015 financial operating results were very positive. The favorable operating variance of $147,700 was largely attributable to dramatically reduced water and sewer charges due to improved management, delays in hiring board approved positions, increased focus on collections, control of 3rd party service and study costs, reduction in bad debt expense allowance and increased activity in the Anacapa and banquet areas. Our reserves are starting to rebuild after the major projects last year for street repair and restaurant remodeling. Based on our reserve analysis and the related contribution rates, total reserve funds appear adequate to meet future repair and replacement requirements contingent on future requirement associated with street repairs. CB Vets Host America’s Mighty Warriors and Clinical Neuropsychologist Michael McVeigh and Donna Norton At the December 8th meeting of the Corte Bella Vets, Debbie Lee introduced her organization, America’s Mighty Warriors, to honor fallen heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Her son, Marc, was the first Navy Seal to be killed in 2006 in Iraq. She has since taken up the quest to provide help and assistance to veterans. She recently met our guest speaker, Dr. John DenBoer (left), and provided him with grant money to conduct research on veteran cognitive memory with up to 100 veterans. Dr. DenBoer, a clinical neuropsychologist, has been instrumental in creating a program called “SMART” which stands for Strategic Memory and Alzheimer Rehabilitation Training. He believes this training will ultimately “slow” down the shrinkage of the brain as it relates to cognitive memory by utilizing “brain exercises” that will help stimulate the release of glutamate, which plays a principal role in neural activation. He and his team of graduate students are going to enroll 100 veterans in the valley area to test the hypothesis. As we age, dementia and its different forms, including Alzheimer’s disease, affects more people, which makes daily functioning more difficult. It has been proven that veterans are 10 times more likely to experience early onset of the disease, potentially due to

brain injury, experiences, lack of nutrition, and other factors yet to be understood. Participants start with a short 10 minute exercise to create a baseline to compare against at the end of the program. Study participants will complete a series of exercises which are contained in the Cadet’s book with the help of a coach who utilizes a Coach’s book. The study requires a commitment of one and a half hour sessions twice a week for 6 - 8 weeks. When the exercises are complete, a graduate assistant will do a follow-up in order to measure the change from the baseline. Results from the study will be compared with a Mayo Clinic study related to non-veterans of the same age group. This study is limited to veterans but they do not have to have combat experience. At the end of the study, Dr. DenBoer’s group will be able to evaluate the impact of the program. The research, although a small sample, will help set the stage for further research of brain activity as we age. During the question and answer period, Dr. DenBoer provided illumination to misconceptions about keeping our brains active: •

Doing the New York Times crossword puzzle will NOT stop dementia from happening. If you have been doing it forever, it is not new and novel and thus doesn’t result in glutamate being released.

The website, Luminosity: Brain Games and Brain Training, has NOT proven itself to improve brain function.

It is important to continually learn NEW/NOVEL things, such as languages, musical pieces, and games.

Christmas Climb Steve Downing Corte Bella Hikers visited Santa on the summit of Camelback Mountain via the Cholla Trail. The Cholla Trail is extremely strenuous because it gains 1,200 feet in 1.5 miles with much of the route requiring scrambling through large sections of boulders. The trail becomes more difficult to follow in the final section near the top. Santa and a decorated Christmas tree greeted us at the summit. Corte Bella – Its HOA and Its Amenities Dave Wright Corte Bella has much to offer its residents, both retired and those approaching retirement. Anacapa Restaurant and

Day Spa

The web team staff strongly encourages all residents to take a virtual tour of Corte Bella through the aforementioned main menu selections. It’s well worth the time and effort. The pulldown menu on the Corte Bella tab provides a nice overview of the various clubs and interest groups that function within Corte Bella. Each club and interest group option will take the reader to a webpage with specific details and contact information. The other pulldown menu options include information about the Anacapa Restaurant, Social Hall, pool area, and information about renting the facilities for weddings, meetings, and private parties. The Fitness Center and the Sports Courts options, (both listed on the pulldown menu under the Corte Bella tab), deserve special attention. The Fitness Center webpage includes information about the many and varied fitness classes offered throughout the year, including water aerobics, as well as data on personal trainers and contact information. For your convenience, the Sports Courts webpage allows you to reserve tennis, pickleball,

and bocce ball courts without having to go to the Fitness Center or without having to make a phone call. The HOA tab is more of an administrative tool. Options on this tab provide access to commonly used forms, general information about an HOA (how it functions and the role of its officers), access to community long term planning documents, access to official HOA documents such as Board and various committee meeting minutes, Architectural Review Committee guidelines, financial reports, and governing documents such as Community Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions (CC&Rs). It also provides a link to the Corte Bella Resident & Visitor Management System (a very useful tool for controlling visitor access to Corte Bella). One of our community’s most heavily used amenities is the Anacapa Restaurant. The Anacapa Restaurant tab provides a link to the Anacapa calendar and the Anacapa webpage. The restaurant hosts a number of events throughout the year and all are found on the calendar in addition to links to the current lunch and dinner menus. The Anacapa webpage includes a brief description of the services provided, together with links to all menus, hours of operation, and also a phone number to call for reservations. There are many spas throughout the west valley but few can match the prices and the expert service of the Corte Bella Day Spa. Keep in mind that the CB Day Spa is quite popular and reservations should be made as far in advance as possible. The Day Spa tab describes the spa itself, the staff, and the various treatments offered. It also lists a phone number for reservations.

No-Furl/No-Tangle Rods for HOA Flag Display On five patriotic holiday periods (President’s Day, Armed Forces Day to Memorial Day, Flag Day to Independence Day, Labor Day to Patriot Day, and Veterans Day to Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day), the HOA displays the American Flag on Mission Drive, Carrera Drive, and the community parking lots. The HOA maintenance personnel put up and take down the flag poles for these displays and the Corte Bella Vets put up and take down the flags. Although the flags are gorgeous and look wonderful at all times, they sometimes get “furled” or tangled around the flag poles and

have to be straightened out. To eliminate the furling, the Corte Bella Vets have purchased no-furl/no-tangle rods to be placed on the flags (61 at $35 for each rod – no HOA funds were used). They will be used each display period starting with this coming Presidents’ Day. If you’d like to help defray the costs of these no-furl rods, you can make a tax deductible donation to the Corte Bella Vets on line atwww.cortebellavets.org/donate or by sending a check made out to Corte Bella Vets to Corte Bella Vets at 22511 N. San Ramon “Walk-About-Night” San Ramon Stringers This year the annual San Ramon Walk-About-Night was held on Friday, December 4th. Hundreds of residents and guests enjoyed the spectacular display of Christmas decorations that adorn over 40 homes. Some streetscapes are simple, others quite complex, some use one color, and others the gamut of the rainbow. Most of the houses are connected with red rope lights that run down both sides of the street and with a snowflake on top of each mailbox. Approximately 25 singers from the Corte Bella Chorus entertained everyone with traditional Christmas songs and music. They raised the Christmas spirit of all who attended. Thank you, thank you, and thank you to the CB Chorus! This group of residents has become a permanent fixture of Walk-About-Night. Speaking of traditions, Santa, played by Ed Kuba, made his annual appearance along with his elf, Steve Buda. They teamed up to make sure the Salvation Army Red Kettle was noticed by all. As in past years, the Red Kettle was stuffed with generous contributions from Corte Bella residents and guests. This is an easy opportunity for us to share our good fortune with those in our area who are less fortunate. The final total is in - $4567! The local

Valentine’s Daze Allie Bowling When you think of Valentine’s Day what comes to mind? If you’re like most people, it’s the romantic notion of flowers, chocolates, jewelry, and/or a romantic weekend with the one you love at a secluded B&B. Someone please wake me up! I’m in a daze. Times have changed. Victoria’s Secret is out of the closet. The last time I tried on Victoria’s Secret lingerie, I laughed so hard, I had to use my inhaler. Can we talk? You don’t have to be in a romantic relationship to celebrate Valentine’s Day—to tell those you love, OK like a lot, and care about how much they mean to you. Our loved ones, like chocolates, come in many varieties. This Valentine’s Day make it a point to tell one person or several how special they are. Make your list: perhaps it’s your spouse, a significant other, a life partner, a friend, a parent, a sibling, a child, a grandchild, a teacher, a coach, a doctor, your hairstylist, your mechanic, and don’t forget man’s best friend! I could go on and on. More importantly, you know who they are and why they mean so much to you. How will you show your appreciation for them this Valentine’s Day? Below are just some of the reasons why these people have meaning in your life—there are probably a hundred more reasons that you can think of. So this Valentine’s Day don’t be caught in a daze. Instead, “show and tell” them how much you care and especially why. If possible say it in person. If not give them a

We thank all those residents and guests who drove or walked by to see our lights, put money in the Red Kettle and offered kind words to those who put up and take down the lights. We also thank the “drone” operator for the great pictures that were taken this year. They show our decorating work from a new level. We would also like everyone to know that we have more fun decorating then anyone realizes. We hope the joy with which we do this is evident. These are the times of our lives and we love it!

call. Hearing the words will mean so much more than you can imagine. And remember, a Valentine’s card along with a few carefully chosen handwritten words (hint, hint, see paragraph below) will brighten just about anyone’s day. And lastly, don’t forget the goodies: cupcakes, cookies and chocolates. You are my Valentine because: you let me be me, you love me as I am, you listen, you’re in my court, you’ve got my back, you believe in me, you know what makes me happy, you make me laugh, you take care of me, you help me heal, you pray with me, you understand my relatives, you tell me I look good when I’m pooped, you make me look snazzy, you make coffee in the morning, you keep a stash of chocolate, you fill up the gas tank, you make the bed, you put the toilet seat down, you always have change, you separate the laundry, you replace the toilet paper, you water the plants, you walk the dog, you wait until I’ve read the paper before recycling, you go to the grocery store when I’ve forgotten something, you drive me here and there, you go shopping with me, you hold my hand, you try new things, you tell me I’ve done a good job, you don’t claw the furniture, you don’t bark when the doorbell rings, and you wipe your paws before coming into the house! Now it’s your turn to put pen to paper and make a list. Who and what did I forget that you remember? It’s never too late to tell someone how much you care. It just might change your life! Wishing everyone a happy and healthy Valentine’s Day.

Antiques Roadshow…Maybe? “Deep Discount” This story is so hot that the writer’s name had to be disguised so he wouldn’t be barraged with questions as to who these two might be. I had the opportunity to interview these intrepid hunters at the Starbucks inside Fry’s on R.H. Johnson. We met after 9:00 pm, knowing that no one in Corte Bella would still be out. We were safe. The two you are about to meet asked that their names and identities not be revealed. “Molly and Polly” live in Corte Bella. They are thicker than thieves when it comes to hunting for a good deal. Sometimes a good deal is not enough. They crave a GREAT deal and for a lot less. They are hunters, not gatherers when it comes to nabbing the perfect find. Their preparation is impressive. They get up at 4:30 am just to be first in line at local Yard, Moving and Estate Sales. No grass grows under their feet. They wear back packs, carry water, stash power bars, wear industrial strength walking shoes, visors cover their eyes, and they slather on Bullfrog sun block. They carry a stash of ones, fives, tens, and twenties. They’re pros. They know what they’re doing. They have little competition. Amateurs only get in their way. Sometimes they work as a pair, other times they work alone. This is not a game. To them it’s the Major Leagues. The object: Nab the biggest find in the shortest period of time so they can move on to the next sale. It was late one afternoon in December, the sun was setting; Molly and Polly had scoured several yard sales without a conquest. The mood was dark, feelings were low, they were hungry. Their day had been a total bummer. With only thirty minutes left to scout for

“big game” Polly suggested, “What the heck, let’s hit Goodwill.” Time was of the essence as they both had to get home to their Crock Pots and husbands (in that order). Polly rushed through housewares looking for a random Lalique or Lladro figurine that an untrained eye might otherwise mistake for a knickknack. Molly peeked at the framed art. She spotted a picture with possibility, though she wasn’t quite sure. She picked it up. Scrutinized it. Put it back down. Almost walked away when—she put it in her cart. While the picture depicted a pleasant outdoor scene, she thought the frame was a bit shoddy. Molly & Polly agreed it could be touched up. They bought it for $3.99. A few days later with the picture still sitting against a wall in Molly’s laundry room she looked it over again and this time saw an artist’s signature. She flipped on her laptop and Googled the name. Molly nearly fell off her chair holding a bowl of Shredded Wheat. Come to find out some of the artist’s prints were selling on eBay in excess of $1,000. Molly and Polly while not in the habit of celebrating, except for an occasional high five once back in the car, felt they had scored a touchdown. They grabbed a coupon and treated themselves to ice cream sundaes at the Dairy Queen. As wise and prudent “American Pickers” they are taking their time locating the best resource to determine actual value. They are in the process of submitting their picture to the good people at Antiques Roadshow. If they are selected to appear they will come clean and their identities will be revealed. Stay tuned.

Wine and Dine International Begins Another Season Janice Aiken In celebration of another successful season of savoring fine food and wonderful wines, the 2015 Wine and Dine International Crystal Ball, held December 13th, was perfect in every way! The annual black tie event always draws a large crowd, as an opportunity for members to participate in a sparkling gala just before leaving to join friends and family elsewhere for the holidays. The social hall was dressed in black and silver bow tied chairs, low lights, and the delightful dance band, “Touch of Gray,” was back for their third season of entertainment. The dinner was served expertly, offering a choice of pork tenderloin or sea bass.

Chef Dan, Fred Hernandez and their staff made the service look effortless! The Wine and Dine International team, Roberta Rials, MaryAnn Bradley and Janice Aiken will continue the trend of maintaining members’ expectations with special wine tastings, wine pairing and winemaker’s dinners in the season to come. Incidentally, the Wine and Dine membership has contributed in excess of $55,000 in total revenue to the Anacapa for the year 2015. Thank you Chef Dan Haywood and Fred Hernandez for working sometimes with a very tight schedule and proving to us how very valuable you are for the community.

Aarp Safe Driver Course •

Robin Mandell When was the last time you took a driver’s refresher course? If you can’t recall, it’s probably time! Driving is definitely not what it used to be; with the ever-changing road conditions, traffic laws, and car technology, it might seem a bit challenging. This is why it’s important to keep your driving skills up to date in order to be safe on the road. AARP offers a driver course designed for mature adults to refresh their driving skills, road knowledge, and safety precautions. We invite you to take advantage of the Smart Driver course to brushup on your driving skills. By taking a driver safety course you’ll learn the current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques, and how to operate your vehicle more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. In addition, you’ll learn: • How to maintain a proper following distance • The safest way to change lanes and make turns at intersections • The effects of medications on driving • Reducing driver distractions such as eating, smoking, and cell phone use

Proper use of safety belts, air bags, antilock brakes, and new technology found in cars today

After completing the course, you will have a greater appreciation of driving challenges and a better understanding of how to avoid potential collisions and injuring yourself or others. You may be eligible to receive an insurance discount, valid for 3 years, upon completing the course, so consult your insurance agent for details. AARP membership is not required to take the course, and there are no tests to pass. The classroom course costs only $15 for AARP members and $20 for nonmembers. Bring with you to the class a check made payable to AARP, your driver’s license, your AARP membership card, a snack and some water. Corte Bella resident Robin Mandell is a volunteer instructor. Corte Bella Tennis Club Spreads Christmas Cheer Jerry Tinsley An abundance of holiday cheer greeted guests at the home of Norma McAllister and Ron Watts on December 5, 2015 as the Corte Bella Tennis Club held their annual Christmas holiday party which featured great food, warm camaraderie, and a spirit of giving. Among the fun events of the evening was a hotly contested “Ugly Christmas Sweater” competition where Otto Furuta was proclaimed the winner by a reindeer’s nose over perennial runnerup Ron Watts. Christmas music, a review of the year’s tennis activities, and the obligatory speech by Tennis Club President Joel Piaskowski rounded out a very nice evening. The main event, however, was continuing the Tennis Club tradition of helping others in need. The Corte Bella Tennis Club supports local charities each year by “Paying it Forward” to our community. This year the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Phoenix was the selected recipient. $645 in grocery store gift cards were collected to disburse to families staying at the houses in the Phoenix area while their children are in hospital care. Joel P. noted: “Our tennis club members can always be counted upon to support worthy causes. Their generosity fulfilled many wishes for a Merry Christmas this year to these families.”

Ronald McDonald House Executive Director, Nancy Roach along with CBTC President, Joel Piaskowski and Ronald himself. The holiday season can be particularly difficult for families who are staying at Ronald McDonald House. And, for some families it can be difficult to focus on holiday gift giving with limited resources and little time to spare away from their hospitalized child. Santa’s Workshop was held on December 15th at Ronald McDonald House Charities of Phoenix where the gift cards were distributed to families by Santa’s Elves. With them, they were able to supplement holiday meals for families who are provided a dinner meal, but are on their own for breakfast and lunch. They are able to use the kitchen facilities provided by Ronald McDonald House to prepare family fare.

Entrees Herb Tilapia with Wild Rice and Tomato Relish Chicken Scaloppini with Portobello and Sweet Pepper Coulis Stuffed Pasta with Creamy Tomato Fondue Home Fried Potatoes with Herbs and Butter Smoked Bacon and Pork Sausages Buttermilk Pancakes with Warm Maple Syrup Chef’s Selection of Seasonal Vegetables

The gift cards generously collected and donated by CBTC members were included in Santa’s Workshop as gifts for RMHC families. Some gift cards were made available for families to choose to gift to other family members while others, like the grocery gift cards, were given directly to families at Santa’s Workshop. Families were so appreciative of the gift cards and the help that it provides in purchasing needed items and holiday gift-giving.

HEALTH & FITNESS

Welcome from the Corte Bella Golf Club Jeff Stuart Arizona experiences winter just as the whole country does but usually in a milder fashion. This winter has been considerably colder than in recent past creating many more frost delays which may cause frustration to anxious golfers. This, however, is only a part of the effect of the cold weather. Playing golf requires a good set of greens and fairways and Mother Nature can determine how your game will turn out. Cold weather not only hardens the ground but renders turf growth almost dormant which makes the surface very slick, fast and most times unpredictable; it can make a ball bounce off the green like it hit a cart path instead. The health and maintainability of a golf course is enough of a science without Mother Nature’s influence. During the winter everyone on the greens keeper’s

staff is on high alert. Frost delays are put in place not only for golfer’s safety but to protect the golf course. Most people don’t realize that just stepping on frozen grass will break the leaf and kill it where the impression was made, creating an unpleasant look and lengthy recovery. Golfers can however claim some slack when their game is off while playing in cold weather due to multiple possible scenarios that can diminish performance such as ball travel distance. The claim is that cold golf balls don’t fly quite as far, but how

the cold affects your body might be more limiting to your distance than a golf ball. Number two on limiting ball flight distance is the extra layers that you end up wearing to compensate for the temperature. These layers also reduce swing range and speed. Let’s face it, cold weather definitely affects distance. The golf ball does not compress as much. Also, think about how cold your hands get and how tight your muscles feel coupled with all the layers you are wearing. All these factors affect your swing speed causing it to be slower. Combine that with reduced ball compression and there is your loss of distance. It’s not uncommon to lose about 15-20% in distance depending on the actual temperature. One helpful tip is to keep your golf bag and balls indoors overnight before playing; it will help to minimize the effect of the cold. National golf rules prohibit you from artificially warming your golf balls once the round starts. At this time of year, rules go out the window for some of us, so we rotate balls kept warm in our pockets from our own body heat. I am hopeful that insights like this will help to keep our community involved and inspire possible future interest in the game of golf, as well as the pride in knowing more about the premier amenity that our community offers. Please feel welcome to come and visit us anytime with questions about the course or inquiries about testing the waters of golf and have a hot cup of coffee on us! Looking for a Valentines gift idea?
