ASSOCIATION
Your Corte Bella Team When I first came to Corte Bella, I had many opportunities to stand in front of the residents and state my intentions. It was expected and I even made a few promises to you. I said I would ensure a great team, the place would be cleaner and safer and even more beautiful. I also told you that I would take care of your money. Now, a little over two years later, I am extremely pleased with the course we are on and what has been accomplished. Mike Arrington, Corte Bella Country Club Association, Inc. General Manager I told you that new hires Stoney Amerine (Facility Manager) and Jodell Dodge (Spa and Fitness Manager) would be great additions to the Corte Bella team and what they would bring to the table. In both cases, not only were my instincts spot on but I was even surprised at how far they have exceeded even my own high expectations and standards. Their dedication to the community and expertise is apparent in all that they do. Other departmental chiefs, Chef Dan Haywood, Fred Hernandez
and Heather Chavez have all been serving you for ten years now and they continue to do their jobs with passion, great effort and love for this community. Paula Coudright, your Operations Coordinator, although the newest addition to the staff is a perfect fit to the team and everyone that has come in contact with her raves about how she handles her business with loving care. The most important thing I want to express to you as our valued residents is that these employees are all chock full of character and take great joy in serving you each and every day. They are loyal, trustworthy and take great pride in doing their very best for you with the same love for Corte Bella that I share with them. They lead and develop their teammates with the same expectations that I have for them. I thought that you should know who is minding the store and that your investment and Corte Bella are in the hands of some amazing individuals and how important that is to me. This is what makes your lifestyle so great. I am certain that I can speak for all when I say “We love our jobs and the opportunity to serve you, each and every day. We all realize how special Corte Bella and its residents are and thank you for the opportunity to be a part of this wonderful place. None of us are perfect and we make mistakes sometimes, but rest assured, it is not due to lack of effort, ability or a burning desire to please you.
What is Corte Bella Long Term Planning About? Tom Penkauskas, Chair The Long Term Planning Committee is the most recent committee to be chartered by the Board. The Committee is new by virtue of the charter but it actually had its foundation formed in 2013. It started with a survey that was developed by the Strategic Community Planning (SCP) Committee that you, the residents and homeowners answered. Your responses were used to develop the Corte Bella Vision and Mission Statements. In addition, Goals and Objectives were identified that focus on the five Mission Statements. All this was done at a strategic, high level.
8 | CB Times | The Official Community Magazine of Corte Bella
With the objectives defined, now is the time for the Corte Bella Long Term Planning Team to take it a level lower. Using the goals, objectives and your survey answers the team will generate specific recommendations for the General Manager and Board. The focus thus far has been on communications within and outside the community. If you would like to participate in this process, your input is most welcome. The team meets on the third Monday of the month in the Bacara room at 3:00 p.m.
Board Talk: Enhancement – A Key to Community Value Community enhancement is often discussed in describing Corte Bella. For starters, here is the definition. Enhancement: to increase or improve. It relates specifically to HOA progress on quality, desirability, attractiveness and value.
Jim Williams, President, Board of Directors
Directors advocate positive change and enhancement as a means to both preserve and increase the value of Corte Bella. We have made great progress the past few years. A solid foundation for success was laid by meeting fiduciary responsibilities, while enhancing the community with effective maintenance, facility upgrades, improved staffing and performance, fostering better communications, and promoting increased resident participation. Here are some of the more significant enhancements implemented during the past three years, and what is currently in progress or planned. Personnel: The employment of new General, Facilities and Spa & Fitness Center Managers, along with additional HOA Staff (e.g., Operations Coordinator, facility personnel, and Anacapa Service Manager) has greatly enhanced the HOA’s ability to meet resident needs and effectively manage our amenities. Maintenance: Customarily, enhancement focuses on maintenance and physical alterations. Maintenance in the short term includes landscaping and the myriad day-to-day repairs and upkeep, e.g., window, carpet and street cleaning. The long-term focus includes gravel replacement, building and wall painting, building upgrade and renovation, and roads maintenance. Committees work closely with the HOA to define related plans and budget strategies. You have to admit, the community looks great! Capital Improvements: Enhancing also refers to bettering infrastructure and capabilities. The Board, Committees and HOA have judiciously managed Operations, Reserve and Capital funds to facilitate timely repair and replacement while adding new capital items. Past enhancements include new Bocce Ball courts, the Lanai, Anacapa renovation, and Social Building increased storage and upgraded Audio-Video-Wireless systems. In-process enhancements include the wedding fountain and Anacapa shade and pergola projects. Long Term Plan (LTP): The SCP foundation of Vision, Mission, Goals & Objectives are being translated into an LTP. The Mission
category “Develop and enhance effective communications within and outside the community” is currently in progress by the LTP committee. Related objectives are to improve communication between the HOA, Board and residents, and to both extend communications and better collaborate with surrounding communities. Resident Enhancement Proposals: Change is good, especially changes from you. The HOA has a process to consider your ideas (contact the General Manager for a copy of the Corte Bella Concept Proposal form). Your idea could be anything from a facility alteration, improving an amenity, adding a community event, to changing an HOA process or a governing document. The concept will be approved or disapproved after actions to gather data and further explore or evaluate are completed. Several resident proposed changes were approved, for example, the annual Super Bowl party and other new events, Anacapa decor, cypress tree care and Anacapa shade proposals. Other recent proposals including estate sales are being assessed. Other: Enhancement occurs in many other ways. From a Board/HOA standpoint, updated policies (recent: Investment & Procurement), response to residents’ concerns, timely communications, informal meetings (e.g., mini town-halls and Welcome coffees), all encourage involvement. From a resident perspective, attend Board and Committee meetings, get to know more about what is going on, follow the rules, read official information sent to you, and report concerns to the HOA. If you have questions or comments about any of the above, then please let the General Manager or me know. For now, I will close with a Gail Sheehy quote: “If we don’t change, we don’t grow. If we don’t grow, we aren’t really living.”

CULINARY
March: In Like a Lion and Out Like a Lamb Lamb Stew is one of the recipes that I have received the most requests for at the Anacapa restaurant over the years. Here is the recipe with the proper ingredient measurements for a family meal rather than for a large number of patrons. As a chef, lamb is always a favorite of mine in the springtime. Directions 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Braised Lamb Stew
2. Salt and pepper the lamb chunks. In a large ovenproof Dutch oven, saute the meat in both oils until browned on all sides. Remove the meat from the Dutch oven and set aside. 3. In the same Dutch oven, saute the celery, leeks and onions until softened, about 3 minutes. Add herbs and wine. Add the butter and then stir in the flour until smooth.
4. Return the meat to the Dutch oven. Add the beef broth, mix well, cover and bake until the meat is fork tender, about 2 hours. Stir occasionally. If it looks too thick, add a little more broth.
5. Serve with mashed potatoes or rice. This is a great cold weather dish or a hearty main course any time of the year.

Nic Watson Awarded Security Officer of the Year John Larson Heroes live among us in Corte Bella. Security Officer, Nic Watson, was awarded the annual prestigious Security Officer of the Year and recognized by Securitas USA with the award at the end of January. Each year, Securitas North America recognizes one security officer for heroism, and one security officer for outstanding performance. Security Officer of the Year winners are chosen based on nominations from their colleagues and managers, and are featured in Excellence in Service magazine. In April 2015, Security Officer Watson proceeded to a resident’s home for a welfare check. Upon his arrival at the resident’s home, he knocked on the front door and rang the doorbell but did not receive a response from the resident. He then noticed a red SUV parked in the garage and determined by close examination of the driveway that only one vehicle was in use. He also noticed that the resident’s mailbox was completely full of unpicked up mail. Based on these circumstances, Nic notified the Sheriff’s office and requested a welfare check. He was told by the operator that a previous welfare check had recently been canceled by the resident’s daughter. Nic insisted on another welfare check over the advice of the operator and the deputy sheriffs were notified. Deputy sheriff officers, fire trucks and ambulances arrived and broke down the resident’s front door. The resident, an elderly woman who was living alone, was found on the floor unable to rise and call for assistance. She had been on the floor for approximately three days and had progressively grown weaker, unable to call for help. The resident was transported to a local hospital where she was hospitalized for several days for treatment and recovery. The victim has made a full recovery because Security Officer Watson
General Manager, Michael Arrington, awards Nic Watson Security Officer of the Year did not take “no” for an answer and insisted on a welfare check. Security Officer Watson’s display of vigilance and helpfulness were instrumental in saving the resident’s life and brought this life threatening situation to a happy ending. Congratulations, Nic!

Elvis Has Left the Building Michael McVeigh Wow - what a show! We hope you were one of the lucky folks that attended the “Music’s Greatest Icons” tribute show at Corte Bella Social Hall starring World Champion tribute artist, Roy LeBlanc on Sunday, January 10th. The event was sponsored by the “Friends of Italy” to celebrate the 81st anniversary of Elvis’s birthday. Roy LeBlanc has performed with many of Elvis’ entourage like DJ Fontana, Joe Espisito, The Sweet Inspirations and the Jordinaires. In 2003 Roy was named “The World’s Finest Elvis Impersonator” at the annual Elvis Extravaganza in Las Vegas. As expected, he brought down the house with a performance that was as close to a live Elvis concert as you will ever see. He also performed incredible tributes to Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Conway Twitty, Tom Jones, Neil Diamond, George Jones, Del Shannon, Frank Sinatra and others while interacting with the audience. There are many Elvis tribute acts worldwide and the ones that have the voice rarely have the looks. Roy LeBlanc has been blessed with both. Combine that with his charisma, stage
presence, outstanding voice range and you can see why Roy has been one of the most sought after shows on the planet. I’m sure residents in the entire Sun City West area heard the audience singing Delilah during the Tom Jones tribute. The special tribute to the standing Veterans with Elvis’s Trilogy was also moving. “Roy comes to Arizona each year for a much needed vacation from eastern Canada to escape the cold and we are delighted he has become part of our Corte Bella family” said Michael and Lynne McVeigh, his longtime friends and hosts when he visits Arizona. After leaving here, Roy is heading to the Caribbean for his annual cruise and then off to Australia to perform with the “Capital Records All Stars 2016 World Tour” for six weeks. Cameras were flashing before, during and after the show as Roy was available for photos with the audience. He signed autographs and even signed a few Elvis scarves for those fortunate few that had them. We wish him continued success and hope to see him back in Corte Bella soon. Thanks to Dan Luparello, Ray Valle and Jack Carollo for hosting this outstanding event and a special thanks to Chef Dan, Fred Hernandez and the entire Anacapa staff for the work that went into this show.

Corte Bella Vets Hold Their Second Annual Charity Golf Tournament Donna Norton A glorious Saturday morning greeted the veterans of Corte Bella who hosted their second charity golf tournament at our community club. Last year they were able to raise over $15,000 to support the Disabled American Veterans, Department of Arizona. This year this non-profit group chose two equally deserving organizations that continue to remember the dedication, sacrifices and services of the men and women and families of our Military, past and present. The first beneficiary is America’s Mighty Warriors, an entity started and directed by Surprise resident, Debbie Lee, the mother of Marc, the first Navy Seal killed in Iraq. In Marc’s last letter home to his family he asked them to “Do me a favor and pass on the kindness, the love, the precious gift of human life to each other.” America’s Mighty Warriors gives this statement of life as it helps needy veterans and their families. The second organization is Fisher House Arizona. This group provides, as needed, free temporary transportation, housing and related support to veterans and their families while they are being treated at an authorized VA facility for injuries, posttrauma issues, illnesses, etc. One facility is located in Tucson and a second Arizona location is on the drawing board for Phoenix! Both charities have proven to be true to their mission by providing over 94% of their funds to veterans. The event began with an emotional ceremony involving music, presentation of colors, and the playing of taps to honor the sacrifice of those that have given their lives for our country; and ended with the retirement of colors for each service branch. The scramble format allowed all participants to enjoy a low scoring experience, the raffle drawings provided lots of gifts (over 150 prizes), silent auction
sales included a Super Bowl Helmet with autographs from 25 MVPs (authenticated), and the 50/50 drawing resulted in over $25,000 for our charities. Our organization will be contributing $10,000 to Fisher House and another $10,000 for America’s Mighty Warriors in the near future.
Special thanks go to the Corte Bella Golf Club and staff, Sun City West American Legion Post #94, and to a multitude of wonderful sponsors and donors. God Bless America!

Treasures In Our Backyard Martin F. Scheinholtz Residents and visitors to Corte Bella are fortunate to have world class scenery virtually in our back yard. Everyone is well aware of the Grand Canyon and has likely been there. Perhaps somewhat under the radar are Lake Powell and Rainbow Bridge National Monument. Lake Powell is a creation of the Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado River northeast of the Grand Canyon. The area is known as the Glen Canyon National Recreation area. As in the Grand Canyon, the Lake Powell scenery is comprised of dramatic sandstone and limestone bluffs and mesas. Having hiked the Grand Canyon and gone house boating on Lake Powell, I can say the scenery is comparable. Photographs do not do justice to the spectacular views in either location. Lake Powell
runs northeast from the dam for almost two hundred miles. All along the lake are side canyons which offer amazing views of what eons of erosion have created in the rock walls. Rainbow Bridge National Monument is several miles into one such canyon. The approach is about fifty miles up river from Glen Canyon Dam. It is most easily reached by water. House boating or rental of speedboats from marinas on the lake affords access as do scheduled fast boat tours from Wahweap Marina located just across the Utah border from Page, Arizona. After arriving at the docks which provide boat slips for various size water craft, you have a one mile hike over easy terrain to Rainbow Bridge. It is well worth it. Rainbow Bridge is one of the largest stone arch natural bridges in the world at 290 feet high, 234 feet across the base, 42 feet thick and 33 feet wide. I recommend seeing this wonder in the spring or fall when Lake Powell is not teeming with boat traffic. Access to Lake Powell and subsequently Rainbow Bridge is best accomplished by driving to the Page, Arizona area (230 miles from Corte Bella). Wahweap Marina is another 10 miles north just across the Glen Canyon dam. Overnight accommodations are available both in Page and at the marina.

Corte Bella Adventure Group-
Formally Known as Corte Bella Hikers Steve Downing Half way through our second year of existence, the Corte Bella Hikers have become more diverse in our activities. While hiking is and will always be our primary activity, we have added other outdoor activities such as cycling and kayaking. The surrounding active adult communities are much larger than Corte Bella and can sustain separate groups for hiking and cycling. Corte Bella Adventure Group can support both activities. While many of the hikers do cycle, we would enjoy At Browns Ranch in front of adding membership of Balanced Rock those that have cycling as their primary interest. Our cycling events so far have taken place on the multi-use trails in the area. Some follow rivers and some follow canals, which keeps us off the surface streets. Thus, a generic name for our group that encompasses more than just hiking was needed. Our new name is the Corte Bella Adventure
Group. We continue to look for new adventures for the group and members are encouraged to suggest activities to be scheduled. Our activities are scheduled using a website called Meetup. Once a member of Corte Bella Adventure Group, you have the opportunity to look at a description of the event. You will see the name of Warning sign while hiking up Ford the trail or bike path, the Canyon distance, and a description of the hiking/cycling event. If the activity is of interest and you would like to attend, simply RSVP yes. This allows the Event Host to know who will be attending. If you sign up for an event and your plans change, just log on and change your RSVP to a NO. The members have total control over what they feel is within their capabilities. Your Exercise Workout Just Got Real Linda Wright Corte Bella’s Fitness Center strength building equipment received an upgrade recently with the installation of 9 new Hammer Strength and Life Fitness machines. The 10th piece will be received and installed in mid to late February and will complete the transformation of this section of the Fitness Center. The HOA Board approved this expenditure in October 2015 based on the well- researched proposal and recommendation by the Corte Bella Fitness Center manager, Jodell Dodge. This project has effectively brought our fitness facility up to the standards all residents deserve – a place where you can safely workout and achieve your personal fitness goals. The new strength equipment provides tools to effectively promote core strength and also allows the development of focused muscle toning to support bone health and overall strength at this stage of life for our community residents. Speaking from a personal experience, my workout buddy and I are very impressed with the new equipment and its precise focus on targeted muscle groups. We like how each piece of equipment makes us feel after we use it. The difference between the previous equipment and the new machines is remarkable. We anticipate seeing some dramatic results within a short time as we workout frequently. For us, the Fitness Center is an essential part of our efforts to preserve our health as we age.
Each resident who is able to do so should consider trying out the new equipment which includes a shoulder press, chest press, decline press, high row, lateral raises, leg extension, seated leg curl, triceps press and bicep curl apparatuses. The abdominal crunch machine is eagerly awaited and will arrive soon. Please note that Jodell Dodge is available to answer any questions you may have or to demonstrate the use of the new equipment. Plan to stop by the Fitness Center and look at the new layout/placement of the equipment. Come see how the HOA has invested in the fitness facility and in your fitness future. Note: Anyone interested in embarking on a new fitness regimen should consult with their doctor beforehand to make sure they are physically able to perform weight training.
Our Courtyard Visitor Gayle Davis As I was getting ready to go for my morning walk I passed by my patio door, where Minnie, our cat, was looking intently outside. Out of the corner of my eye I spied some movement and was startled to see a very large version of our cat looking back at me. As I stood there dumbfounded, the bobcat, in typical cat fashion, gracefully turned to ignore me and quietly left our back yard before I could grab my phone to take a picture. Knowing that my husband would never believe this, I took my phone outside to see if I could find him. Carefully looking through my neighbors backyards and down the side of our house, I saw no sign of him. Then I looked up and there he was, at the front of the house sitting on top of our high courtyard wall, looking down at me. I was shocked when he turned and jumped into our courtyard, as we are often outside in the courtyard with our cat. I ran back into the house and over to our dining room window to peek through the shutters to see what the bobcat was up to.
He casually walked around our fire pit and occasionally stopped to check out a new scent. Not finding anything of interest, he effortlessly jumped back onto our wall where he posed long enough for me to take several pictures of him. I was thrilled and afraid at the same time. It was amazing to see this beautiful creature up close, but frightening to think if we were outside with our cat what might have happened. I have come to learn that healthy bobcats aren’t interested in people, and if they smell a human they will usually avoid them. They are, however, interested in animals and can be a serious threat to pets. As carnivors they usually prey on rabbits, rodents and birds, but have been known to prey on cats, small dogs and even goats and sheep. If our cat was alone in our courtyard, this story could have had an entirely different ending. Thank goodness we never have her outside unless we are there with her. Please let this be a reminder to all pet owners to never leave your pet unattended outdoors. We do live in bobcat and coyote territory. If you should ever happen to have a close encounter with a bobcat, it is suggested by Desert USA that you back away slowly and deliberately, and make a lot of noise to scare it away. Or, you can stay inside the safety of your home and take a picture from your dining room window.

How to Find the Right Person
Bits N Bytes – The Corte Bella Website Dave Wright The Corte Bella HOA has a General Manager, his staff, a governing Board of seven Directors, and seven standing committees, comprising well over 100 people. It’s not always easy to pick the most qualified person to deal with a specific concern or even how to reach that person. In this 6th in a series of 10 articles on the Corte Bella website we hope to simplify that process for you. The Corte Bella website (www.cortebella.net) has all the information you need to contact anyone in the HOA, on the Board of Directors, or on any of the standing committees. It also contains contact information for the Anacapa restaurant and several local emergency numbers. All can be found under the Contacts tab on the far right on the main menu bar. Any queries relating to day-to-day operations, billing inquiries, or other HOA administrative questions should be directed to either the General Manager or the appropriate member of his staff. All are conveniently listed, together with their areas of responsibility, under the HOA Management/Staff which is the first selection on the Contacts pull-down menu. The second selection, Emergency, displays phone numbers, contacts, and hours of operation for the HOA, the front Guard Post, the Security Roving Patrol, the local Maricopa Sheriff’s office, the nearest Fire Department, and several animal-related emergency numbers. Your third sub-menu option under Contacts is Anacapa Restaurant. As you might imagine, this selection provides hours
of operation, names and contact information for the restaurant management as well as for catering and banquet events. It also lists the main number to call for reservations for dinner and special events. The fourth selection on the Contacts sub-menu is Board of Directors. The webpage contains photos of all seven directors, their dates in office, and the areas of responsibility for each. You can send any director a private e-mail by left-clicking on that member’s picture. The final entry on the Contacts pull-down sub-menu is Committees. Here you will find webpages describing each committee, the committee chairperson, committee members, a schedule of committee meetings for the current year, and links to the latest committee meeting minutes and other committee documents. Contact information is provided so that residents can direct specific committee-related queries directly to the committee members. Please remember that directors are not involved in HOA operations, but rather with policy and oversight issues. The same generally holds true for committee members. All questions pertaining to operations should be directed to the General Manager or the Operations Coordinator. Likewise, the various Discussion Groups are provided as a venue to express concerns and to discuss things in general among residents. They are not designed to be an official means of communications between the community and the HOA. So enjoy the Discussion Groups but if you want an answer from the HOA, send the question directly to the responsible person within the HOA.
Next month’s issue will deal with Clubs, Interest Groups, and Events.

What You Need to Know About Shingles Martin F. Scheinholtz, M.D. As a public service to Corte Bella residents, I wanted to share with you some thoughts about shingles derived from my twenty five years in medical practice treating acute and chronic pain problems. The consequences of failure to prevent or treat the disease are devastating as anyone who has had chronic pain as a result of shingles can attest. In this brief article I shall discuss the cause, prevention, treatment and possible outcomes of the disease. Shingles is caused by the chicken pox virus. Once a person has had chicken pox, the virus continues to live in a dormant state in the outer border of the spinal cord. It is with you for the rest of your life. During the acute phase of chicken pox, the body mounts an immune response to the virus which normally lasts for many years. When this resistance decreases to a critical level, which often seems to occur when a person is stressed or otherwise ill, the virus reactivates. It travels down nerve pathways to manifest itself as a rash along these nerve paths. It can occur anywhere on the body, but is almost always only on one side. It can be down a leg or arm, around the chest or abdomen or even on the face. The rash is accompanied by or even preceded by severe burning pain. Think hot poker touching the skin and not letting up. It is so severe that people with shingles can’t stand to be touched or have clothes touch the affected area. Sleeping is difficult. Pain medicines (narcotics) have little effect on the pain. Normally the

rash lasts a week to ten days and then is no more, but in people of advanced years (that’s us Corte Bella residents) there is another problem. It is a chronic pain syndrome called Post Herpetic Neuralgia. This has nothing to do with Herpes, but rather it is the name for shingles pain that doesn’t go away when the rash clears. This chronic pain is as severe as the acute pain and lacks any satisfactory treatment. The older the person with shingles, the higher the possibility of having chronic pain from it is. At age sixty the risk of chronic pain is about 50%. It goes up even higher in people over sixty. What is reasonable treatment for this disease? The best treatment is prevention! The shingles vaccine is available and strongly recommended for people over sixty. It is about 50% effective in preventing shingles. Even if the vaccination does not entirely prevent shingles, it also substantially reduces the risk of having chronic pain as a result of contracting shingles. That’s good enough to warrant getting the shot as it has virtually no side effects. I’ve had mine. So has my wife. If you get nothing else from this article, get the shot. The consequences of not doing so are too dire to contemplate. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) is in the process of evaluating the long term effectiveness of the shingles vaccine. It is known that after 7-10 years the effectiveness of the vaccine in preventing both shingles and the subsequent chronic pain syndrome (post herpetic neuralgia) drops considerably. CDC has not, as yet, promulgated a firm recommendation for revaccination, but based on their data, 10 years after initial inoculation would seem reasonable for revaccination. Check with your primary care doctor on this issue. For those of you who have contact with children, you cannot communicate shingles to another person. However, while the skin rash is present, you can infect susceptible children with chicken pox. If you should contract shingles, have your primary care doctor refer you urgently to a pain practitioner who will likely treat you with nerve blocks. This can be very effective in the acute phase of shingles (when the rash is present) not only in alleviating the pain, but also in preventing the chronic pain problem. The sooner it is treated, the more effective the nerve blocks are. Success in treatment depends on where the rash is located and how long the delay is in getting treatment. The higher on the body the rash is, the more difficult it is to treat successfully. It is very difficult to achieve successful treatment with facial shingles. The chronic pain syndrome can be treated with antidepressants, major tranquilizers and drugs that modulate spinal cord signal transmission. The long and short of that is that treatment is more often than not, unsatisfactory at controlling pain. Once again, the last word is get the shingles vaccination.

U.S. Route 60 (Grand Avenue) and Bell Road Interchange The Grand Avenue/Bell Road Interchange Project is using the design-build contracting method, which provides flexibility while the contractor’s designers work side-by-side with the construction team to deliver an improved connection between the two roadways. The project is scheduled to be completed over the next 14 months (in spring 2017). Utility relocation work in the area, mostly during overnight hours, is already under way. In order to reduce the project’s length and lessen the overall impacts of construction, ADOT has worked with the city of Surprise and local businesses to schedule a full closure of Bell Road near Grand Avenue. The full closure will allow Bell Road to be reconstructed as an overpass traveling over Grand Avenue and the parallel railroad tracks, providing a significant improvement for traffic flow. The full closure of Bell Road between 134th Avenue and West Point Parkway is scheduled to start April 1, at the conclusion of the Cactus League season at Surprise Stadium. The full closure of Bell Road will be in place between 6 and 8 months. At the very latest, the project team will be expected to reopen Bell Road to traffic in time for the holiday shopping season in November. While not all of the work will be finished at that time, reopening Bell Road will allow improved access to businesses in the area. At the project’s start, (the contractor) Coffman Specialties, Inc., will focus on work along the center median of Grand Avenue near Bell Road. The work is set to start on January 29. Drivers can expect Grand Avenue to be narrowed to two lanes in each direction in the area between Towne Center and Bell Grande. Any necessary closures of Grand Avenue will primarily be scheduled at night or on weekends. Construction along the Grand Avenue median will set the stage for the addition of the median on- and off-ramps that will connect to the new Bell Road overpass. Most of that heavy construction will conclude by late this year, although drivers can expect restrictions along Grand Avenue through the project’s completion next spring. The work will be done in stages, with the initial work focusing on the center median area and the ramp construction. Later in the schedule, traffic will be switched toward the median to allow construction of the Grand Avenue “through lanes” in the area. When the full closure of Bell Road is put in place April 1, the primary north-south detour routes will be Dysart Road (east of Grand Avenue) and Litchfield Road (west of Grand Avenue), with Greenway Road serving as the primary east-west detour route. “Soft” closures of Bell Road will be in place at Dysart and Litchfield roads, while local traffic will still be able to travel as far as 134th Avenue on the east side of Grand Avenue and to West Point Parkway west of Grand Avenue.
ADOT works to inform the public about planned project restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule. For more information, including all traffic alerts about this project please call 855-712-8530.

Welcome to the 2016 Corte Bella Tennis Board Jerry Tinsley The annual meeting to elect Tennis Board members and review 2015 was held on January 12, 2016. Following dinner, Tennis Board President, Joel Piaskowski, presented a fascinating multimedia presentation of 2015 events with pictures provided by social chairman Mark Sivakoff. Joel introduced new members to the growing Corte Bella tennis community, lauding tennis as one of the most social forms of healthy exercise. He thanked outgoing board members Steve Downing, who served as treasurer for the past year, and Vicki Faaborg, member-at-large/publicist for the past three years. The 2016 Board was elected by acclamation and is profiled below. Joel Piaskowski moved to Corte Bella from Omaha, Nebraska in 2006. He learned to play tennis soon after he arrived here and continues to play at least two to four times a week in mixed doubles groups. Joel is originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. 2016 is his third year to serve as Corte Bella Tennis Club President. When not attending to tennis duties, he works full-time in sales from his home. Also continuing to work in sales from home is Vice President, Sam Pechkurow, who relocated to Corte Bella full-time in 2013 after enjoying frequent snow-bird trips from Warren, Ohio since 2005. Sam has played tennis for 38 years and plays in 4.0 men’s groups three times per week. Sam is serving his second year as tennis club VP and coordinates and directs Corte Bella tennis tournaments. Donna Norton moved to Corte Bella in 2013 from Alameda, California. Donna began taking tennis lessons in 2010 and now plays with several tennis groups in Corte Bella four days a week, including the 4.0 women. In addition to her tennis board duties where she is serving her second year as Secretary, she is also Secretary of the Corte Bella Veterans and serves on the HOA Board of Directors.
2016 Corte Bella Tennis Board (L-R): Dave Beams, Mark Sivakoff, Jerry Tinsley, Sam Pechkurow, Otto Furuta, Joel Piaskowski & Donna Norton. to Corte Bella in 2005 from Cleveland, Ohio. He plays in several Corte Bella tennis groups three days per week. This will be his second year as co-social chairperson and official tennis club photographer. Jerry Tinsley, member-at-large, has lived in Corte Bella for nine years and has played tennis since the age of twelve. He taught tennis lessons at Corte Bella from 2007 - 2011 and continues to play with Corte Bella groups twice weekly. He moved to Corte Bella from the Kansas City area. He served on the initial tennis board in 2008-2009. He works part-time for Donor Network of Arizona. The tennis club’s next activity on March 5, 2016 will be the Prince Kalaniana’ole Tournament and “Luau Lanai Luncheon,” in honor of the first native Hawaiian to serve in the U.S. Congress. Hele mei hoohiwahiwa (come celebrate). The 2016 Board
Otto Furuta began playing tennis 60 years ago, but took a 35 year hiatus before moving to Corte Bella in 2005. He was born in Arizona but spent his formative years in Chicago and Sacramento. The Game of Golf Jeff Stuart The Corte Bella Golf Club is always looking for residents who want to explore the possibility of learning the game of golf, so we would like to invite you to take a chance and try a game of golf; we will be with you to help you through the uncertainty and give you the necessary knowledge to successfully navigate the game! Playing golf for the first time should not be an intimidating proposition but one of the things that can make it so is the fact that people approach learning to play the game with unrealistic expectations. Unless you’re Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth or at their level, you’re not going to shoot a perfect game of golf, nor are you going to be shooting anywhere near par every hole. It’s just not going to happen anytime soon. When the pros regularly hit well over par, you have to realize that they have tens of thousands of hours into playing and practicing this game while you will be starting at ground zero. Remember that when you watch a golf match on television, they’re only showing you the leaders in the tournament and highlights from other golfers. They show you the best of the best of the best. With putting, which is 50% of the game, even pros miss around 5% of the time from five feet, and their success percentage decreases exponentially from there. You just need to understand three things in golf: 1. Golf is not a game that will always be perfect or predictable. 2. You don’t win golf, you better your abilities. 3. You are playing against yourself to achieve a lower score.
Golf can and will be very frustrating at first:
Golf is really not very fun when you’re whiffing 80% of your shots. I’m not talking about when the ball doesn’t go exactly where you want. I’m talking about when you completely screw your swing up and hit the ball to who-the-heck-knowswhere, or when you top it and it goes ten feet, or when you completely miss the ball.
That’s just not fun. But…it does get better. You’re just going to have to suffer through some of that, but once you start hitting that ball with a nice loft and distance…oh boy, that feels so good!
Getting golf clubs and the equipment you will need:
Starting out, your clubs do not matter very much. You’re not going to be hitting consistently and expensive irons are going to be a complete waste at this time. A lot of people start out borrowing golf clubs from friends or renting them from the golf club. That way you can decide if you enjoy the game enough to invest money in your own set. When you’re ready to buy, your most affordable option might be going to Craigslist or buying used clubs separately. Buying a nice set of a clubs that are a few years old is a great way to get good equipment at a reasonable price. Buying new really nice clubs is not going to be the best use of money at this point. Take the money you save by buying used and invest it in golf lessons, range time, and actual golf. That will serve you much better.
After you get clubs, here are a few more things you’ll need:
Golf bag: Getting one that stands up automatically and has shoulder straps is worth it. Golf balls: For a beginner, buy whatever is cheapest because you’re probably going to be losing a lot of balls initially, so cheaper is better. Divot Repair Tool: You’ll occasionally need this to repair greens when your ball makes a divot upon landing. Ball marker: You can use a coin but at least have something small and flat to mark where your ball is on the green. Golf shoes: They definitely help when the grass is wet, but unless traction is an issue, you don’t really need them right away. When you do get them, make sure to get ones with plastic, not metal spikes as a lot of courses don’t allow metal spikes anymore. Golf glove: They provide extra grip if your hand gets very sweaty and protect your hand from getting calluses. Many gloves

tend to wear out quickly, If you do buy a glove, don’t buy a cheap one. It will wear out sooner and you’ll spend more money in the long run. There are a number of faux pas that you can commit on the golf course, so be sure to review this list before playing a game with others. Some common mistakes include: Not repairing your pitch mark. When the ball lands on the green, it can sometimes leave an indent which will impact putting. If you don’t repair it properly, you can destroy the root. Also fix your divots and rake sand traps. Talking while people are taking their shot or talking loud enough that people putting or teeing off on other holes can hear you. Please be considerate. Not picking up your tees. If it’s not broken, you can reuse it. If it is broken, toss it in the garbage. Giving unsolicited advice. You should never give advice on the course unless it’s directed to a friend who you know would appreciate and use it. Giving people unsolicited advice is in poor form and you might even hurt their game by making them think too much, which can throw off their swing. Hitting your ball into or near other people. If other players are in range, you should wait. Not letting people play through. If your group is slower and the group behind you has to wait consistently for you to finish, then you should let them play the next hole first. Parking the golf cart or pull cart on the green. Greens are super sensitive and very expensive to repair so don’t risk damaging them. Walking or casting a shadow on people’s putting lines. Putting is hard enough as it is without other players distracting you. So please come on in and have some fun. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain….we would love to have you! Look for more tips in the coming months.
