ASSOCIATION

The Wild, Wild West Most everyone knows that Arizona’s gun laws are a little more lenient than most of the rest of the country. I like to say, “That’s because we live in the Wild West.” In Arizona places, unless posted, you can wear in plain sight or carry a concealed gun under the current laws just like Wyatt Earp used to back in the Mike Arrington, Corte Bella Country Club Association, Inc. General Manager day in a little town south of here called Tombstone. I’m sure you have all seen the movie and know about the “Ok Coral.” What you may not know is that guns are not allowed in any of the associations common areas presently due to Board policy. Guns are restricted whether in sight or concealed on association property and to do so is a violation of that policy.

8 | CB Times | The Official Community Magazine of Corte Bella

Attorney opinion is that because the association owns and operates common areas like the Anacapa, the Spa/Fitness Center, pool area, etc., the Board of Directors are well within their rights and authority to restrict fire arms in these areas belonging to the Homeowners Association (private property). When someone comes into one of these areas displaying or concealing a firearm, whether loaded or not, our staff is then faced with reminding that person of the rules and the need to comply. However, it is my guess that some enter into these areas on occasion with concealed firearms and our staff has no way to know this and therefore cannot address the issue. You will notice that signage is posted in certain strategic areas to deliver the “no firearms” message for this reason. So in summary, as upstanding citizens and residents of this great community, I ask that you be reminded of the rules as related to firearms and comply as such when using the association facilities. Thank you.

Board Talk

As I sit at my desk pulling together thoughts for this month’s issue of the Corte Bella Times, I must admit that my thoughts are drawn in many different directions. November brings us Thanksgiving, originally celebrated as a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year. I see this as an opportunity to give thanks for the tremendous work performed in the past year by our many Corte Bella volunteers and staff. Michael McVeigh, President, Board of Directors

Some things that come to mind are the efforts of our Finance Committee and their work in presenting us with a budget for 2017. For the second year in a row there will be no assessment increases. I’m thankful for the dedication and teamwork with our General Manager, Michael Arrington, and his staff for making this possible. Everything that happens generally starts in a committee. Check the website and attend a monthly meeting. This is an excellent opportunity to get to know the challenges we face and to meet talented resident volunteers. I’m also thankful for the efforts of our Long Term Planning Committee for identifying our future needs. The Technology Committee is faced with timely decision making as older computers, servers and other assets need upgrades. Is anyone still using the same TV, computer, cell phone or laptop from 10 years ago? Thankfully, they will be replaced! I am extremely thankful for our sound financial condition, which enabled the following--last year the Building & Grounds Committee ensured that our roads and granite replacement projects were addressed. We saved money leveraging the final phase of the project from 2017 by moving it back into 2016. Other road projects were moved to 2017 and beyond. I’m thankful for the wedding fountain completion, the pergola project on the social hall, and replacing most of the aging outdoor furniture and tables at Anacapa. This will be completed by year’s end or early in 2017. The Neighborhood Awareness and Safety Committee, Architectural Review Committee and the Government Affairs Committee are active with new projects that will benefit all of us in many ways.

scan the many events taking place throughout our beautiful community between now and the end of the year, I’m thankful for the dedicated effort of the many volunteers that help make them possible. If you can’t find enough to do, visit our Lifestyle Manager, Pamela Lawrence, and suggest events you would enjoy. Our editor, writers, photographers and others that make this publication possible should also all be congratulated on a job “well done.” I carry the Corte Bella Times with me most of the time and refer to it often. Thanks to everyone involved, including our many advertisers. Finally, let’s all be thankful for the efforts of our FSR staff for the job they do every day on our behalf. While we see many of them, some perform their jobs behind the scenes. Let’s show our appreciation and say “thank you” the next time we see our chef, fitness center manager, administrative, busser, server, maintenance or any other employee who works exclusively for the betterment of our community and its residents. The next Board workshop will be held Thursday, 11/10, at 9:00 a.m. and the next Board meeting Wednesday, 11/16, at 10:00 a.m. All residents are welcome and encouraged to attend. Your thoughts, opinions and concerns are very important to me as your Board President. Contact me, at any time, at mmcveigh3@ cox.net/623-433-9921. Lynne and I extend our warmest wishes to you for a Happy Thanksgiving. We have many blessings to be thankful for!

Walk-About-Night San Ramon Stringers The 5th annual Christmas Lights celebration will be held on San Ramon Drive in Corte Bella. This event is referred to as the “WalkAbout-Night. Over the past five years, this event has become a tradition with the residents of Corte Bella. This neighborhood displays and shares their Christmas Spirit with residents and their guests. It is anticipated that hundreds of people will walk our streets and enjoy the spectacular display of Christmas decorations that adorn over 40 homes. Most of the houses are connected with red rope lights that run down both sides of the street and with mail boxes topped with snowflakes. Each year more homes are added and the decorations become more spectacular.

We also hope to have a visit from Santa and a couple of his helper Elves. The local residents have only two requests for those who attend: 1. Please, No Parking in front of decorated homes. This blocks the view for others, creates a safety hazard for walkers and drive-bys, and irritates the resident who has decorated his/ her home. 2. Please be generous in making your contribution to the Salvation Army Red Kettle. It will be prominently positioned to make giving easy to a great local charity. Please mark your calendars and plan to share with us the beginning of the Christmas Season.

**** Walk-About-Night Friday, December 2nd ****

Photo: Jim Gannon

In keeping with the Christmas Season, this event will include the annual Salvation Army Red Kettle fund raising drive. Last year the Red Kettle was stuffed with nearly $5,000. This year we hope to beat that mark.

The Corte Bella Chorus will be present and will entertain everyone with traditional Christmas songs and music guaranteed to raise the Christmas spirit of all who attend.

Corte Bella Enjoys “Start of the Season” Linda Wright Under clear and cool (by Arizona standards) evening skies, Corte Bella residents kicked off the social season on Monday, October 10th. Enjoying the patio areas of the Anacapa for “al fresco” dining and the wonderful interior of the restaurant, 300 community members welcomed back our winter residents and formally welcomed Corte Bella’s Lifestyle Manager, Pam Lawrence. Chef Dan and his kitchen crew worked their magic providing four amazing food stations Lifestyle Manager, Pam featuring short rib tacos, Lawrence, greeted everyone curried chicken salad wraps, as they arrived. nachos, super kale salad cups, pork loin sliders, spring rolls and soba noodle stir fry. A wonderfully delicious celebratory cake topped off the culinary treats. The Anacapa front of the house staff provided their amazing service with smiles and efficiency that Corte Bella knows so well. As the Anacapa enters its 11th year of operation, Corte Bella is fortunate to have such a dedicated crew of professionals offering consistent service and quality to our community. Lifestyle Manager, Pam Lawrence, greeted everyone during the event and provided bulletin boards of posters promoting upcoming events for Corte Bella residents to view and choose. A survey was distributed to the event attendees asking for feedback on current programs and requesting information about events or activities residents might enjoy. A handy reference guide to all events and dates was available for residents to take home. Pam Lawrence and Eric Gow enjoying the music.

DJ Ray Mar provided excellent tunes that had everyone out dancing by the light of the

Anacapa Chef, Dan Haywood, and his awesome team. moon and the twinkling of the Corte Bella fountain on the 10th hole of our lovely golf course. Corte Bella’s version of a flash mob doing a line dancing routine was quite enjoyable and memorable. This was one “kick up your heels” memorable kind of night. The Monday Night Football game and the baseball playoff game were both being shown live on the Social Hall big screens!

The front of the house Anacapa team do an incredible job! Wonderful table arrangements and decorations (thank you Corte Bella volunteers) made the event so perfect and special. Thank you to Corte Bella facilities and maintenance staff under Stoney Amerine plus Anacapa’s Fred Hernandez for their expertise in setting up this large event. Thanks to Paula Coudright, HOA Operations Coordinator, and Peg Pozdol, HOA Fitness Staff, for their help with logistics and other vital functions. The support of HOA General Manager, Mike Arrington, for this event was greatly appreciated. Lifestyle Manager Pam Lawrence’s coordination and organization skills were key to the event’s success. There’s no question that Corte Bella residents are in for a wonderful season this year and beyond.

Congressman in Corte Bella Donna Norton Congressman Trent Franks (left) addressed the Corte Bella Vets on a beautiful October evening behind the Anacapa. Speaking without notes or a teleprompter, he provided a down home message of both “thanks” to veterans for their willingness to say “yes” to putting their lives on the line and outlined some of the challenges that our nation faces. Although running for office, he is unopposed and is counting on his wife’s vote to put him back in office, which made everyone laugh. The Congressman is serving his 7th term and serves on both the Armed Services and Judiciary committees. He spoke of the lessons he learned early in life and the price of freedom that created so many tombstones over the years. He recognized Corte Bella’s very own Hugo Tringali who helped fight Michael McVeigh (left), Congressman Franks & Larry Leighton

Congressman Franks with Hugo Tringali evil during World War II in many battles against the Nazis. His generation leaves us on a daily basis and we should honor them until the last one has gone. War is a terrible thing, but it has given us freedoms we have today. Trent and his wife have eight year old twins at home who are either pretending to be super heroes or royalty on any given day; his desire is that we can pass on a nation to our children that is financially stable, strong, and a beacon of hope to the world. He shared the story of a boat overloaded with Cambodian refugees fleeing the Khmer Rouge who were decimating their country. With a storm on the horizon, the overfilled boat was greeted by a Merchant Marine vessel flying the Stars and Stripes. The people were elated that they would survive, but disaster struck when a seven year old boy fell from the ladder and his father followed him into the black sea. The crew was able to retrieve the bodies and brought them on-board only to discover that they were still alive. When they recovered their voices, they told the captain through a translator that they were in the water talking about how lucky they would be to live in the United States of America. They thanked God that they would have the opportunity to find freedom. He opened the floor to questions and shared his perspective on issues facing the nation. He concluded the meeting with a genuine THANK YOU for the opportunity to address the Corte Bella Vets and we responded with a standing ovation.

Sun Valley Animal Shelter Fundraiser Bonnie Revelle You have done it again…what a great community we live in. With the help of Elaine Uhren and Judi Johannesen, we raised over $2,650 in cash and pet items to support our local no-killer animal rescue shelter, Sun Valley Animal Shelter. We had a large turnout for our first “Dog-On Mah Jongg” and Bridge event held October 3rd at the Anacapa restaurant. After the event we presented the items and cash to Vanessa Linares, Shelter Director. She was overwhelmed with the generosity of the Corte Bella community. They had just received a dog into the Shelter that needed surgery and she wasn’t sure how they were going to be able to perform the surgery. With the help of YOU, the Corte Bella animal lovers, he will receive the much needed medical treatment, plus it will help other pets at the Shelter. Many thanks to those that provided the beautiful gifts baskets that were raffled off! The women loved the dog bone cookies that were donated by Mary Ann Bradley and Andrea Welsh. Thanks Mary Ann and Andrea for adding your creative touch at this fun event.

Sun Valley Animal Shelter is a private, non-profit, no-kill animal shelter. Since 1995 they have provided loving, compassionate care to homeless dogs and cats of the northwest valley. They do not receive any state or federal funding. They rely on generous donations, revenue from their resale shop, and fund raising events to meet their operating costs. SVAS has partnered with Fry’s Community Rewards, Amazon Smile & IGive.com to make it easy for you to support them. It takes a minute of your time to sign up and doesn’t cost you anything. Jack Sock’s Connection to Corte Bella: Janice Sim Jerry Tinsley

the U.S Davis Cup team the last few years and winning men’s and mixed doubles trophies at the U.S. Open, Wimbledon, and at the 2016 Olympics. Janice started playing tennis in college at Kansas State University in the 1960’s. She is proud to be the first person in her family to bring home a tennis trophy, but she is not the last. All three daughters, Suzanne, Stephanie and Christie took tennis to a very high level, with Christie winning the Kansas State high school championships in 1992 and 1993 in undefeated seasons. Christie was also the first Big 12 Women’s Singles tennis champion in 1997 for the Kansas Jayhawks. While Janice no longer plays tennis, she enjoys walking, creative arts and crafts, and reads avidly. She also participates in several Corte Bella bridge groups. She and Jim are ardent Kansas State football fans and they usually attend January Bowl games wherever K-State goes.

Corte Bella resident, Janice Sim, takes greater interest than most tennis fans in the ups and downs of #2 ranked American tennis player, Jack Sock (left), for one simple reason. She was his assistant tennis coach for his first two years he was in high school at Blue Valley North in Overland Park, Kansas in 2007 and 2008.

Janice and Jim, who are celebrating 49 years of marriage, also enjoy visiting children and grandchildren in Kansas, Virginia and Texas. Some of their eight grandchildren are following the family tennis gene, but parents are wise enough to not push any of them in that direction.

Janice moved to Corte Bella in 2010 with her husband, Jim, after retiring from teaching business education and computers at the suburban Kansas City high school. She first met Jack when he was a seventh grader watching his older brother Eric’s tennis matches on the high school team. She says both boys are tremendous athletes whose family moved them to Overland Park from Lincoln, Nebraska when Jack was in fifth grade to train with the Mike Wolfe Tennis Academy.

Janice has not spoken to Jack Sock recently but follows his career closely, noting he was recently a men’s doubles finalist at the China Open tennis tournament. She still sees him as the funloving, athletic young man he was a few years ago, but sees that he is very serious about practice, conditioning and improving his game. She is proud to have known him in his formative years. We know she was a positive influence in his life.

Janice mentioned “Jack always wanted to be a member of a team, even though when he played in high school he could not play full seasons each year until after the Easter Bowl junior tournament in Palm Desert, California which he won in 2008 as a 16 year old.” When he was able to play in high school he was undefeated in the state of Kansas with an 80-0 record for four years losing only one set which was to his brother, Eric. Jack has continued his fascination with team play by being named to

What the Heck is Pickleball? Robin Mandell That is a question a lot of Corte Bella residents had when they first moved in and found out that one great amenity of our community is 4 permanent and 4 temporary (3 days/week) Pickleball courts. Many of us had never heard of the game. HISTORY: In 1965, a congressman from Washington State, Joel Pritchard, and some friends invented the game on an old badminton court with a net 36 inches high. They formed game rules, relying heavily on badminton. The equipment: ping-pong paddles and a perforated plastic ball. The original purpose: create a game the whole family could play together. TODAY: Pickleball is sweeping the nation and is the fastest growing sport in the country. It is especially appealing to seniors, with 68% of the estimated 2 million current members nationwide being 60 years and older. Of these players, 53% are male and 47% female. There are 4 Pickleball courts in the space of 1 tennis court. We normally play doubles, so 16 people can play at once on our 4

permanent courts. Game rules can be learned in one session, and, unlike tennis or golf, almost anyone can get a rally going and enjoy a game within a half hour. Any experience with racquet sports such as tennis, racquet ball, squash, or ping pong helps. The game doesn’t require a lot of running or the ability to make only power shots; there is an emphasis on finesse and strategic shots. A game is won with only 11 points, so it doesn’t take long either. SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES: Pickleball has become so popular that our neighboring 55+ communities are either building new courts or are converting existing tennis courts to Pickleball courts. Sun City, Sun City West, Sun City Grand, Sun City Festival, Pebble Creek, and Trilogy have all done it. Access to courts has become a selling point to potential buyers. CORTE BELLA CLUB: Regular play began on our courts in 2005. In 2012, a formal club was formed with 63 members. That number has grown 146% to our current enrollment of 155. Our players’ abilities range from stark beginner to national tournament winners. We all have fun. Come out to one of our open clinics and see for yourself what it is all about!

Get Ready for Golf Debbie Parks-Dube The month of October was spent gearing up for the upcoming season. Overseeding the golf course, fine tuning things around the clubhouse and staffing up. You don’t have to be a golf member to enjoy the golf club. On a daily basis we offer a restaurant with a variety of tasty options, full bar with big screen televisions, and the irresistible smell of fresh popcorn. We also provide delicious complimentary coffee for our members and Corte Bella residents. Every Monday morning the Corte Bella Lady Putters meet for some putting fun. This is a great way to meet people in the community while getting a little sample of the game of golf. You don’t have to be a golf member to enjoy the Lady Putters group. We have many exciting events lined up for the upcoming season.

tournament. The battle will be waged November 16-18th. This tournament is a kick off to the season for our men’s golf association and it’s all about who will win the bragging rights and have their team picture hung in the men’s locker room. This season will be our 12th year. Every year has brought increased participation than the previous year. We are very excited to see who will be crowned Champion. November resident shot gun special is on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. It is a 1:00 p.m. shotgun golf round, an item off the shotgun menu and a soft drink beverage for $57.00 plus tax. If you’re stopping in for a cup of coffee or a drink at Happy Hour, you can find flyers for our upcoming events like the American Cancer Society Tournament on November 29th. You can also call the proshop at 623-474-3610 or the membership desk at 623474-3616 with any questions for upcoming events.

One of our biggest events of the year is the MGA Ryder Cup
