Some Like it Hot, Some Like it Cold, and Some Like it JUST RIGHT There is always some conflict when it comes to the temperature of pool water. I have heard the different opinions for almost 25 years now. Usually if one thinks it is too hot, there is another that thinks it is too cool. This is not unique to Corte Bella but rather all people and in fact does not really have as much to do with Mike Arrington, Corte Bella Country Club Association, Inc. General Manager
the actual temperature of the water but more so the ambient temperature of the outside air and a personal acclimation to the environment. The temperature of the outside air affects how the water feels to you once you get in the pool all of the time but even more so when dealing with extremes. For instance, 84 degree water feels much warmer on a day when the outside air is 65 degrees than it would on a day when it is 110 degrees but the water temperature has not changed. The industry standards for the pool are typically 84 degrees Fahrenheit for a recreational pool and a little cooler at 82 degrees Fahrenheit for exercise pools. Here at Corte Bella, the pool is a combination of both types. You have a recreational pool with lap lanes built in and therefore, it is a combination of the two types. Some folks like to just relax and float around while visiting with other users and others come religiously to swim laps for exercise in the same body of water.

Since there is no way to separate the two, the Corte Bella standard is 84 degrees because many more residents use the pool for recreation than for lap swimming. The facility crew can heat the pool when necessary to achieve the 84 degrees which we do most of the year. At certain times of the year, there is a 30 degree swing from the outside air high to the low temperature so the heater runs at night when it is cooler so the water temperature will be right the next day. Once the pool reaches 84 or above due to the summer weather, there is not much we can do to cool it down and of course the heaters are then turned off completely. At that time, you will notice the aerators running which help a little to cool the water temperatures but are really not very effective in doing so. In addition to everything I have said here, even the best pool heaters are only good to within plus or minus 2 degrees and such a large body of water takes hours to heat up or cool down. Our crew takes this into account and they are constantly changing settings in order to achieve the recommended 84 degree temperature. Lastly, I already know from experience that a lot of you think 84 degrees is too warm while a lot of others would like to see it at 88 degrees. I hear complaints from both sides of the issue and often on the same days. It has been that way since the beginning of time. Everyone is different. I get it and even understand it. However, the temperature that seems to be the most satisfactory compromise is 84 degrees year round. There is a lot of attention and manual tweaking required to achieving the exact pool temperature all of the time and our crew will continue to do their very best to hit that target temp at all times. Board Talk – President’s Message I would like to extend a sincere thank you and welcome to our two residents who will fill the open Board vacancies. Please join me in welcoming: • Keith Yaktus who has served on the Buildings and Grounds and the Architectural Committees since moving to Corte Bella over 3 years ago. He has 30+ years’ experience in housing management and development, housing construction, roads and grounds, utilities, community events, planning and oversight and maintenance. He and his wife Tamara are from Wisconsin and have two children and three grandchildren. Michael McVeigh, President, Board of Directors
requirements to be certified at the May 25th meeting. They were seated at the June 29th open meeting. Please take a few minutes to meet them and thank them for their willingness to serve. Both Angi and Keith bring a positive attitude and a willingness to help us achieve our short and long term goals. Having attended all committee meetings since April 1st, I can assure everyone that we are very fortunate to have such knowledgeable and dedicated residents working issues on our behalf. We’ve already begun the 2017 budget process and are looking to fill the new Lifestyle Manager position so all residents can benefit from both planned and future activities. Our General Manager, Mike Arrington, is actively preparing a short list of extremely qualified candidates for consideration. Special thanks to Larry Leighton for agreeing to fill the void until the volunteer Events Coordinator position is filled. He is joined by another new resident, Sandy Harris, who has graciously volunteered to assist during the transition.
• Angela Krachunis, a brand new resident, just moved to Corte Bella in April 2016 from Seattle. Angi and her husband, Marcus, attended the most recent Corte Bella Welcome Committee gathering where they became aware of the Board vacancies. Her background is in finance and real estate and she has worked as a paralegal and assisted with mediations. Great timing Angi!
Lynne and I attended the Memorial Day dinner/dance which would not have happened except for Larry’s hard work. Another outstanding event by Chef Dan and Fred Hernandez was enjoyed by the 113 attendees. Please join us for the July 4th celebration event, which promises to yet again exceed our expectations. I look forward to hearing from you regarding any questions or concerns. Our General Manager, Mike Arrington, is also available to assist with day-to-day business.

Gothic Landscaping Mike Arrington, General Manager Corte Bella’s landscape maintenance trade partner, Gothic Landscaping, recently received a prestigious industry award for their efforts in maintaining our Corte Bella landscape. Corte Bella’s Facility Manager, a FirstService Residential employee, Stoney Amerine has worked very closely with Gothic management to establish high goals and standards while reducing the Corte Bella irrigation water bill by a total of over $100,000 during his first two years in the position. No, that is not a typo, I said one hundred thousand big ones! Yes, quality
has gone up and the cost to make it happen has come down significantly. As members of the Corte Bella management team, we like that a lot. Congratulations to Stoney and Gothic Landscaping for working together to achieve such high goals and standards. We are proud to call Gothic Landscaping a valued trade partner and to help ensure that Corte Bella remains the “Jewel of the West Valley.”

Thank You, Words That Don’t Seem Adequate... Jim Williams’ recent resignation provides an opportunity for all of us to look back and reflect on our good fortune to have him in our community. His commitment, dedication, and willingness to devote great energies for the good of the community has been his hallmark. Starting back in 2006, Jim was a catalyst for positive change including purchasing the tennis ball machine, installing misters around the outside patio of the Anacapa, active involvement in establishing our Corte Bella website and transitioning us from a developer run organization to one managed by home owners with an outside management firm on staff. He took some time off in 2009 and returned in 2013 when he assumed the position of President of the HOA Board, which he maintained until our most recent election. Always thoughtful about his role in the community with a focus on “enhancing and improving” the grounds, staff, and amenities, he has been a guiding light for others to embrace change for the common good. Jim’s legacy will continue to live on in the many programs that he helped create, charter, and/or document including: • Long Term Planning Committee • Records Retention Program • CCR Revisions

Jim provided leadership and direction in a manner that both engaged and inspired his fellow directors. He has been a mentor to many and was always willing to talk about how we could be better. We understand his desire to return to a life that doesn’t require his continued attention to the needs of the community at large. We wish he and Netty all the best as they enter into the next chapter of their lives. Thank you Jim!
Thank You for Your Engagement and Leadership Another Board Member departs to help in another area... The entire board was surprised when Larry Leighton tendered his resignation during the April 2016 HOA BOD meeting. A man of his word, he has decided that he needed to pick up the ball for HOA sponsored events until a new Lifestyle Manager can be hired. He has committed to helping that person as they join the organization and will play an important role in keeping things going until that point. Entertainment events are already planned for Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day. Larry joined the board in 2013 and has been an integral part of many of the physical improvements on the property. He was actively involved in the following activities: • Extending the storage area on the social hall • Building the Lanai • Installing a podium at the front gate • Initiating a program to improve utilization of the social hall porch • Requesting shades screens to be installed behind the Anacapa • Keeping our roads maintained
He was Board liaison for the Building and Grounds, Neighborhood Safety and Awareness, Long Term Planning, and Golf Course communication. He has also served as Secretary since 2014. The most visible sign of his contribution to our community was recommending the purchase of flag poles and US flags that now fly in the circle of our neighborhood for our nation’s significant dates. Whenever the flags are raised we are all reminded of both the sacrifice of others and how fortunate we are to be part of this nation. He was one of the founding members of the Corte Bella Vets and currently serves as the President of that organization. He led by example in all that he undertook, always willing to help committees, documentation, and expressing the pro/con of any issue. His wisdom and energy will be missed, but we appreciate his desire to fill a void that needed attention. In appreciation for his hard work and service we will have a large card for both notes and autographs during the next HOA meeting(s). It will be presented at a future date.

Labor Day has been a national holiday since 1894 and is dedicated to workers across our nation. Recipes from Chef Dan’s Cooking Class for Children Executive Chef Dan Haywood Anacapa Restaurant
Caramel Flan
For Caramel: 1 cup sugar 1 cup water For Flan: ½ cup whole milk ½ cup half and half

In a saucepan over medium heat, combine sugar and water. Cook, swirling pan occasionally, until the mixture begins to turn golden – 12 to 15 minutes. Reduce the heat to low and continue cooking and swirling occasionally until the mixture is dark brown and smells of caramel; about 5 minutes. Remove caramel from the heat and pour into 4 ¾ cup baking molds or over ready dishes. Using a kitchen towel or hot pad, tilt the pan or cups while swirling the caramel to coast the bottom and sides evenly. Let stand for a few minutes while the caramel cools down and forms a layer about ¼ inch think on the sides and the bottom.

¼ cup sugar 2 whole eggs, plus 1 egg yolk ½ tsp. vanilla extract Boiling water as needed
Pour the milk into the saucepan and heat until warm but not boiling. Add the half and half, stir to mix well. Add the sugar, whole eggs and the egg yolk plus the vanilla. Whisk until blended. Then strain through a fine-mesh sieve into the prepared cups or pan. Set the pan or cups in a water pan and place the pan in the oven. Pour hot water into the pan to reach the halfway point up the sides of the custard cups or the pan. Bake until the center of the custard feels just firm when pressed gently with your fingertips; about 30 to 40 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool for 1 ½ hours. Then cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight or for up to 4 days.
Directions: Preheat an oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.

• Run a knife along the inside edge of the pan or cups to loosen. Invert a serving dish over each cup. Quickly invert and carefully lift off the pan or the cup.

6 tomatillos, husked and diced 1 large tomato, diced ½ red pepper, diced 2 Tbsp. cilantro, chopped 1 garlic clove, minced 1 jalapeno pepper, roasted, seeded and chopped (optional) 2 tsp. lime juice or 1 lime to juice 1 tsp. sugar Salt and pepper to taste • Add all ingredients together. • Adjust seasoning as necessary. Use more or less jalapeno depending on your preference. • Serve with corn tortilla chips
4 ripe avocados, cut into ¼ pieces 1 Tbsp. lime juice ½ small tomato, chopped 1 Tbsp. cilantro, chopped ¼ onion, chopped ½ tsp. chopped garlic Salt and pepper to taste • In a food processor, combine ingredients and pulse until well mixed. • Adjust seasonings with salt and pepper. • Makes 4 cups. Serve with corn tortilla chips. • If no processor mash in a bowl with a large whisk.

Corte Bella’s Chef Dan Cooks Beyond the Gates And SOuL Helps too! Linda Wright Anacapa’s Chef, Dan Haywood, recently took his cooking demonstration skills to a new audience when he went to Sunset Canyon Elementary School, a Title One school in Paradise Valley School District. Chef Dan, along with his daughter Madelyn (acting as his sous chef), traveled there to give a cooking class to an afterschool program that teaches math skills through cooking. Madelyn wanted to earn volunteer hours for her fifth grade class requirements. She was the same age as most of the kids in the cooking class – 25 kids from 4th, 5th and 6th grades. Chef Dan had volunteered to help provide a professional lesson to the afterschool program being taught by math teacher, Jill Tumminello, daughter of Corte Bella residents, Mike and Susie Biggs.
• Why did you choose those recipes? Chef Dan: Since it was close to Cinco de Mayo, it was an appropriate choice plus these recipes are light and fun to fix as well as being a safe thing to demonstrate, which is an important consideration. I wanted to keep their interest and ensure success. For safety reasons, I did most of the preparation prior to the class while showing my sous chef (daughter Madelyn) how to do the knife work of chopping and mincing. • Why is it important for kids to learn about cooking and to develop these skills? Chef Dan: Learning to cook teaches independence and responsibility. Kids learn to work as a team in many cases when cooking. I believe that when kids know how to cook, they eat less processed food and healthier snacks and meals. Plus, cooking is fun and creative and kids enjoy both of those things.
When Chef Dan found out Jill was using cooking to improve kids’ understanding of math concepts at a school serving underprivileged children, he jumped at the chance to participate. Since it was Cinco de Mayo, Chef Dan chose to demonstrate some Latin American cooking techniques with flan, salsa and guacamole. He not only taught the class but provided all the ingredients at his own expense. This CB Times contributor sat down with Chef Dan to ask him about this experience. • What was your goal and what did you want to teach the children through your cooking demonstration? Chef Dan: I wanted the kids to learn that cooking is fun and to encourage them to try something new and different with their skills they had learned in the class.
• What did you get from this experience? Chef Dan: At first I was very nervous as I was “performing” for 25 kids. I wasn’t sure of the kinds of questions I would get from the kids and if I could successfully hold their interest. Luckily these kids were not only smart and ready to interact with me, but they were respectful, polite and genuine. The kids were indeed a credit to their teacher and their school. I gained even more respect for teachers and what patience they must have to teach every day. It’s obvious to me that teachers have to love

what they do. I also gained experience in demonstrating cooking to a new kind of audience than I’m used to, so that is a learned skill for me. It was amazing doing this with my daughter as my sous chef, with her dressed in a chef’s coat and working alongside me. It was a great experience!

Chef Dan: I would encourage any child to pursue what makes them happy. They should look for ways to be creative and to do some craft they can love. To be able to do something with passion is exciting. I want that for every child. • How can we as a community help promote culinary arts? Chef Dan: Corte Bella residents can help by getting involved and participating in HOA and Anacapa Events. There are many local and regional activities that can help in this area as well. Corte Bella residents need to assist us to come up with new ideas and help us improve the traditional events. • How many years have you been the Chef at the Anacapa? Chef Dan: It will be 9 years in December of this year.
Note: Corte Bella’s Charity Support Group SOuL (Smiling Out Loud) donated $1,000 in supplemental funding to support this after school math skills program (the instructor was provided $50 for the 27 week class.) Additionally, SOuL members donated cooking equipment items to help the children have the tools they needed to prepare food during the

Recently I was watching a local news broadcast and the presenter was talking about a food product being recalled for potential botulism contamination. As this is a product I consume, I went to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website to check out the details. As it turned out, the recall had actually occurred a full week before it made it to the local news cycle! This really concerned me; what if I had consumed that contaminated product? The results could have been disastrous. So now what? I sure do not want to be waiting a week or more for the local news folks to finally report that there is something on the store shelves or in our pantry that could adversely affect my health. Here is the answer. You can subscribe to notifications from the FDA website which will immediately update you with an e-mail based on your selections for notification. Trust me there is a plethora of topics you can choose.
This website is not only useful for Corte Bella residents. Do you have grandchildren that suffer from nut or other food allergies? By providing this information to their parents they can sign up and get immediate notification of products that have “undeclared” allergen content. They further report that one third of seniors will experience a fall this year. What if we fall at home, or suffer some other medical emergency? Many of us are alone. After we call, how will the EMTs get to us?

To Travel is to Live Hans Christian Andersen Mike Biggs Arizona is certainly well known for its classic locations but White Pocket, near Lake Powell, is truly a hidden gem. Fellow CB Times photographer Jim Laskowicz and I signed up for a “photo safari” last year and what a pleasant surprise it was.
As we hiked through the area we witnessed a sea of sandstone, multicolored in some areas while others reminded one of brain rocks, often visible for hundreds of yards. It was if an ice cream sundae had melted over an area close to one square mile. We met our group leader in Kanab, Utah and headed south into Arizona on an off-road safari that delighted our senses.
Believed to be formed over 100 MILLION years ago this geological wonder is a must see for any serious photographer.
We saw a lot of barren desert on our way and travelled through deep soft sand before arriving to our destination… White Pocket, which is officially part of the Vermillion Cliffs in Northern Arizona. A somewhat boring journey soon became a photographers dream. Were we in the southwest or on another planet?
Check it out if you get a chance, but take a safari like we did unless you have a high clearance four wheel drive vehicle. You’ll be glad you did!
Corte Bella’s SOuL (Smiling Out Loud) Recognized by School District Linda Wright The Deer Valley Unified School District recently presented a certificate of appreciation to the Corte Bella Charity Support Organization SOuL (Smiling Out Loud) for its direct in-kind and financial support of the Park Meadow Elementary School, a Title One school (low income community). For the school year 2016, SOuL not only
contributed countless collected “Box Tops for Education” but also provided financing ($1,500) for an educational tool called “Time for Kids” – a weekly age appropriate news magazine used in grades 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. The Wonders Of China Marty Scheinholtz In the World Showcase area of Walt Disney World’s Epcot Center there is a charming pavilion called the Wonders of China, hence the title of this article. Therein is a circle vision theater featuring highlights of the sights, sounds and culture of the People’s Republic of China. After seeing the movie and other sights in the enclave, Patricia and I were compelled to see the real deal. Patricia and I chose to undertake a three week tour of the highlights of China with Grand Circle Travel because of their reputation for providing excellent tour guides and because their itinerary included everything we wanted to see. On our must do list were: The Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, The Forbidden City, The Three Gorges Dam, The Terra Cotta Soldiers and the limestone monoliths of Guilin. We saw those and much more. Beijing is the capital of China. Its metropolitan population of over 21 million makes it one of the largest cities in the world. Most of the people live in high rise apartment buildings 60 to 80 stories high. We visited The Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace and toured the city. The most notable places were Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City and the Great Wall. Tiananmen Square is over a square mile in size encompassing a building Shanghai skyline at night housing Mao’s tomb and is immediately adjacent to the entrance to the Forbidden City, home to numerous Chinese emperors. The Forbidden City is a series a buildings over a mile in length all of similar architecture surrounding courtyards of various sizes. Some of the courtyards could easily accommodate 100,000 plus people. The emperor’s private quarters as well as housing for his concubines and his private gardens were all toward the back of the complex. The details of the numerous carvings were quite impressive. The Great Wall of China is about fifty miles north of Beijing in an area called Badaling. This area of the wall has been restored to its original grandeur and is visited by numerous foreign tourists. Construction of the wall was started well over 2000 years ago with much of the work in the Badaling area done during the Qin (pronounced “chin”) Dynasty over 2200 years ago. The wall was under construction through the Ming Dynasty into the 1600’s and at its highpoint ran over 4000 miles from the Gobi desert terminus, which was also the entrance to China along the Silk Road, to the Yellow Sea.
Next we visited Shanghai, the largest metro area in the world by population at over 24 million. It is a bustling city of modern skyscrapers and elevated expressways. The roads are choked with cars and buses, yet at the same time we saw storefronts no more than 100 square feet containing parts for auto repair. The repairs were conducted on the sidewalk in front of the shop. The city was meticulously clean with lovely parks and gardens scattered throughout. A highlight of Shanghai was an evening cruise on the Huangpu River through the heart of the city. The skyline was brightly lit and quite spectacular. We experienced a bullet train ride to the city of Suzhou in the heart of silk manufacturing country. We went to an operating silk mill where we learned that silk thread is made from single strands of silk cocoons unraveled by machine and combined with other threads to make workable silk which is very strong. After Shanghai we flew to Yi Chang to board a boat on the Yangtze River just downstream from the Three Gorges Dam. After traversing the five locks at the dam we went through the three gorges to the WWII capital of Chonqing (formerly Chungking). The three gorges are comprised of steep canyons about a thousand feet high with dense vegetation and scattered villages. From there it was a short plane ride to Xian outside of which is a huge complex where the Terra Cota army was unearthed. It was discovered in the 1970s during the Cultural Revolution. There are 8000 life size figures created during the Qin Dynasty over 2200 years ago to guard the emperor’s tomb. There are foot soldiers, charioteers, archers and horses. They were modeled after living soldiers with each being unique and hand painted. The paint is now worn off so that almost all appear tan in color. They are truly a marvelous sight and not to be missed if you visit China.

After Xian a short flight took us to southwest China to see the wondrous limestone monoliths of Guilin. They are several thousand feet tall rising from the flat plain of the Li River. Covered with vegetation all along the river valley they are unique in their majestic beauty. Finally we visited Hong Kong, a bustling city with numerous high rise modern buildings, it is the international commercial center of China and its most cosmopolitan city. I have one word of caution as a physician. The air pollution there is routinely significantly worse than Los Angeles. If you have asthma or any kind of chronic lung disease, please talk to your doctor before making your travel plans.

Classifieds Jim Williams You’ve heard the saying: “A picture is worth a thousand words.” Well... that is the main theme of this article called “Classifieds With a Thousand Words.” Classified ads have been available via the Corte Bella community website since it was established in 2004. Pictures were included for the first several years. Processing a classified ad takes about five minutes. Including photos will add about ten to fifteen minutes to the process. More processing time is needed when a resident emails that the item has sold or requests a change to the ad. The extra processing time, imaging and technical requirements for volunteers spelled the end of using photos in 2009.

Good news! The feature you have requested for years is returning. Pictures with classified are again being implemented so you can show what you are selling and increase buyer interest. This change, effective July 2016, was facilitated by recent process improvements, and a newly revised classified ad submittal form and display templates to simplify adding pictures. Revised Classified Guidelines are available on the website. One or two photos are allowed for each ad. The revision includes photo size and resolution criteria, and affirms that classifieds are not allowed for moving, garage, estate or similar sales. In this case, your best bet is to advertise several items in one or more classifieds (you are allowed up to four at once in a 30 day period) and invite buyers to contact you for details or to take a look. Las Palmas: Building Our Community By Elaine Stomski and Eric Gow Las Palmas Social Club is a group that bring our neighbors together to build a stronger neighborhood. These events include monthly gatherings such as dinners, bocce ball, pickleball, sporting events, and wine and hor d’oeuvres. Our seasonal events include Halloween Trick or Drink, Christmas caroling dinner ending at San Ramon Christmas lights, and Valentine’s Day dessert extravaganza to just name a few. A group of Las Palmas Volunteers prepared dinner for the families at Ronald McDonald House in Phoenix. The families consisted of 40-45 people staying at Ronald McDonald House for extended periods of time, but they still have to arrange their own meals. The volunteers purchased, prepared and served the food. The volunteers are encouraged to dine with the families. Leftovers are stored for the family members that could not attend dinner service or if they would like a late night snack. The program is seven days a week, 365 days year. The families are so very grateful for the meals and interaction with the volunteers.

We believe a group logo is one way to do it. By way of back-ground, the Corte Bella Vets is a not-for-profit organization under section 501(c) (3) of the IRS code. We define a Veteran as anyone living in Corte Bella (full or part time) and served honorably in any component (Active, Guard, Reserve) of our Nation’s Uniformed Services AND those who served with our Nation’s Allies. Since organizing in April, 2014 we’ve grown from twenty-some Veteran members to over 255 Veterans from all Services and all components and two of our Allied Forces. The Corte Bella Vets mission is “To foster camaraderie among Veterans of the United States and her Allies, to undertake
charitable and other projects on a state and local level, to promote patriotism, and most importantly, to provide service to all Veterans and their families.” Since our inception, we’ve raised and donated over $40,000 to Arizona Veterans and their families. The Internet has proven to be a tremendous boon to today’s average person. Within seconds, anyone can look up virtually anything on the Internet. The Internet’s usefulness was increased exponentially when it was made portable to all handheld devices, bringing instantaneous information to a user, wherever he or she happens to be in this new, modern, fastpaced world. To help residents with most things local, Corte Bella has included a series of Internet links to local websites. Under the Main Menu Item – Services – the user will find five items, three with links to outside services and two with links to services internal to Corte Bella. The first item the Traffic Advisory Links webpage. It contains links to all types of traffic information throughout the Valley of the Sun. It contains up-to-the-minute conditions on all major highways in the Phoenix area, travel restrictions and road closures, live feeds from ADOT traffic cameras, and traffic time, among other things. It can save you time and frustration if you check it before any trip throughout the valley.
The second webpage with links to outside services is PORA Services. PORA – Property Owners and Renters Association is located on Camino del Sol Road in Sun City West. It provides a wealth of information about public events in and around Sun City West. The webpage provides access to the PORA website as well as access to the Lifelong Learning Center (and its catalog of classes), as well as links to the Sun City West Foundation which offers a variety of services which are available to Corte Bella residents. You can spend hours exploring varied and useful information on this webpage.
The third item with links to outside services is called Local Links. This webpage contains links to State and local government websites, parks & recreation websites, local entertainment venues, real estate websites, and even Cactus League Spring Training websites. This is especially useful to newcomers to the area.
The fourth item, Hobby and Crafts Corner, provide links to artistic and musical activities within Corte Bella. Corte Bella is blessed with quite a few very talented artists and musicians who gladly welcome anyone interested in pursuing these interests.
The final item is the Corte Bella Resident Home-Based Services Directory. This webpage lists a wide range of home-related services provided by your neighbors and friends right here in Corte Bella. Corte Bella’s Spring 2016 Fashion Show Was All “Lights, Camera, Action!” Linda Wright and Paula Penkaukas On April 29, Corte Bella’s Santa Barbara Room was transformed into a visual wonderland with table centerpieces designed to reflect memorable movies that had distinctive fashion trends. From “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” to “Pretty Woman,” every table had something to hold the eye and tickle one’s memory. Attendees enjoyed a wonderful southwestern flavored salad luncheon which was prepared by Chef Dan Haywood and served by the Anacapa staff in their usual flawless manner. While awaiting the show and before luncheon began, everyone enjoyed a special Movie Trivia slide show prepared by volunteer Hilda Furkert. Many of the guests were stumped searching for the correct answers! Thank you Hilda for preparing that entertaining challenge. The Fashion Show featured clothing from Chico’s--located at 67th Avenue and Highway 101. Store manager, Francine Hausrath, along with her staff, did an amazing job of dressing and assisting the models during the show. Bonnie Brannon from Mary Kay Cosmetics performed her magic and made our lovely models beautiful in their wonderful outfits.
Modeling for the show were Corte Bella residents Sue Dziegielewski, Donna Bolme, Paula Souminen, Becky Nelson, Dee Perry, Cindy Budda, Vonnie Bayard, Carol Engh, Susan Claeys, and Carol Overgaard. Escorting the models were Greg Dziegielewski and Phil Soltvedt. Thank you to Joel and Jolene Piaskowski for the beautiful table signs to go along with each centerpiece and the delightful music for this event. Thank you to everyone for a job professionally well done! Corte Bella is fortunate to have wonderful and talented volunteers who worked to prepare and stage this event. Co-Chairs Rose Edwards and Paula Penkauskas were tireless in their efforts while decorating committee members Eileen Stomski-Gow, Nancy Healy and Celeste Nelson were so obviously inspired as reflected in their table centerpieces and décor. A group of gun enthusiasts has resurrected the gun club that started years ago. In the past few years, many individuals or small groups have independently been shooting at commercial ranges, the state owned range of Ben Avery, or out in the open on public lands. All kinds of weapons and targets are used. Some prefer small caliber hand or long guns, others like the higher caliber weapons, and many enjoy the sporting clays or skeet. Such a variety, yet all are centered on expanding the knowledge, developing the skill, increasing social contacts, sharing in economies afforded to groups, and most importantly operating in a safe environment. The Corte Bella Gun Club is now established to provide the opportunity for women and men of all ages and shooting skills to socialize around a common interest in firearms. The advantages of an active group includes; discounted range fees at commercial locations, discounted costs for ammo and equipment, sharing of knowledge and skills, more economical entry costs for beginners, sponsored educational seminars and licensing classes, communications of events and group sponsored shoots, and of course enjoyable social time. The Gunnies will be using a great website app called MeetUp as the communication platform. Each individual signs up on the sight and may elect to receive emails from the Gunnies only or they may elect to join other organizations of their interest. There is a yearly $120 fee to the Club which will be split by the members along with any other agreed upon overhead costs. Unfortunately, we are at the end of the cooler season and many of our members are busy traveling or limiting outdoor activities. Therefore, we don’t expect an active program to begin until October. A Wimbledon Fantasy Jerry Tinsley Who would believe membership in the Corte Bella Tennis Club could include a trip to fabled Wimbledon in Jolly Old England for a morning of tennis followed by an evening of Beatles music, strawberries and cream, and romantic dance. And all for $15 annual dues! As much as members of the Corte Bella Tennis Club may have wished to travel to Wimbledon for strawberries and cream at The Championships this year, the next best thing was to sponsor our own Wimbledon “all-levels” tournament on our courts. Everyone showed up in their best tennis whites in mid-season form to fill the five Corte Bella courts on a beautiful Saturday morning in May.
England Lawn and Croquet Club, located in Wimbledon, England (a London suburb) which are presently in session from June 27July 10, 2016 on television. Commonly known as Wimbledon, The Championships in plural because 15 different tournaments take place concurrently on the 19 grass courts. Tickets to “The Championships” are very hard to obtain, only sold by ballot in January of each year. Typically four to five times more persons apply for tickets than the 38,500 patrons who can be accommodated. As grass courts are quite difficult to maintain, Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam tournament still held on grass. The U.S. Open was on grass at Forest Hills, New York until 1975 when it moved to Flushing Meadow, New York (site of the 1964-1965 World’s Fair). The last Australian Open on grass was in 1988.
Play was stimulating and exciting as players were mixed and matched for the five rounds of the morning. A sunset dinner followed by the traditional strawberries and cream was served at the Corte Bella Lanai later in the evening. Five players were awarded prizes for their outstanding play.
Wimbledon uses 54 million perennial rye grass plants for Centre Court alone. The soil under the court must be kept dry and hard while the grass is precisely watered and mown to an exact height of eight millimeters each day during the fortnight of The Championships.
Neighbors may have heard mellow sounds of members’ voices as a Beatles sing-along continued the evening with such standards as “Yellow Submarine,” “Eight Days a Week,” “A Little Help from My Friends,” and “In My Life.” Dancing under moonlight in the romantic Lanai concluded the day’s fun-filled activity.
Wimbledon has a museum on the grounds showing the interesting history of The All England Lawn and Croquet Club and The Championships. It is a great place to visit any time of year.

Pickleball Club Robin Mandell The First US Open Pickleball Tournament: Club member, Diane Baumgartner, gave this fabulous report of her exceptional accomplishment at this first-time event: “Last summer a friend of mine from Bend, Oregon, told me that a US Open Pickleball Tournament was going to be held in Naples, Florida, in April - and that we should go! As a tennis player, who had played at Nationals, the thought of being able to play in the very first US Open Pickleball Tournament seemed like a dream. The great thing about Pickleball tournaments is that you can sign up for events at your skill level AND/OR age. I decided to go for it and signed up for as many events as I could. In this first Open, there was no qualifying, so anyone could sign up at age or skilllevels. My first event was women’s 60+. I had no partner, but found a gal out of Portland, Maine, named Linda Einselder. Our team name: Portland girls, as I am from Portland, Oregon. We ended up finishing 5th out of 17 teams. We lost to the #1 team but beat the Silver medalists. Next day was mixed doubles with Ford Robinson, whom I met in AZ. We played at the 65+ level, and won a bronze medal! With 20 teams in our bracket, we were proud of that. Friday was Senior Women’s Doubles, and I hooked up with a friend from Idaho, Karen Gysin. We had never partnered together in a tournament, but have played together a lot. There were twelve of the top teams in the nation present. We won our first match
then lost to the 3rd place team, went into the loser bracket, and won two more matches before losing. We felt really good about our wins. Saturday was another day of Mixed Doubles with Ford Robinson. We did not fare as well this day. When you play skill level you find yourself against the youngsters: 25, etc. Seems like they are quicker on the courts! Sunday the single players came out to play. [NOTE: for those who don’t play Pickleball - this is HARD]. Last girl standing, as gals were dropping like flies due to long matches, heat, and humidity. I was able to pull a bye my first match; my final opponent was Carolyn Bagley, from AZ. To my surprise, I came out and beat her 11-5 and 11-1! Result: GOLD in Singles! A special thank you to the Corte Bella Pickleball Club, which got me addicted to this game! Marc, Doug, and Jim came out every morning at 7:00 a.m. to do drills with me. Many members came and supported me: Roy, Liz, Rudy - too many to name. What a great club!
Ready Golf Girls Shelby Cutter Corte Bella’s Ready Golf Girls’ (RGG) Annual Golf Overnight was held April 20th and 21st. Planned by Barbara Paasch and Ceil Fletcher for the last two years, this year there were 15 RGG members and a guest from Trilogy that had fun playing both courses at Antelope Hills Golf Course in Prescott. After a golf scramble the first day on the south course, we headed to Murphy’s in downtown Prescott for cocktails, dinner, prizes, stories and laughter. On the second day we played the north course using an amended “sweet sixteen” format which included being able to pick up your ball once on each hole and toss it to advance without counting the toss as a stroke. That format came in very handy for those of us who happened to land in a sand trap. Afterwards we all gathered in the Manzanita Grill at the golf course for a delightful lunch and more prizes. Corte Bella’s Ready Golf Girls is a group of ladies that play weekly at various Sun City West courses, including Corte Bella, on Thursdays from mid-September to mid-June. RGG also plans a
few additional golf outings which can include day trips to courses further than Sun City West such as Rancho Manana in Cave Creek which we played on June 9th and Talking Rock Ranch in Prescott where, for the past two years, we have chartered a bus to take us. All of these activities give us a wonderful opportunity to develop new friendships while playing a variety of different golf courses.
