ASSOCIATION

April Advisory The weather is warming up and spring is upon us again. During the spring, it is always a good time to remind everyone about safety issues in the community since activity increases with the nicer weather. There are several things that I constantly receive complaints Mike Arrington, Corte Bella Country Club Association, Inc. General Manager about this time of year. One is people walking and running in the street. I know the folks that run and walk in the street do this because they believe it to be easier on their knees than using the sidewalks. This may be true but I can tell you that this activity taking place in the street is much more dangerous because people in cars do not always see them especially before dawn and after dusk. Outside the Corte Bella gates, walking in the street is illegal and enforced by law. There is a reason for this as it subjects those walking or running as well as vehicle operators to a potentially bad accident. This type of behavior is an accident waiting to happen and not a matter of if but rather when. Therefore, those who refuse to comply and continue to use the streets should at the very least wear bright or light colored clothing and/or carry some sort of flashlight or safety device to decrease the risk of being struck by a vehicle. To eliminate all risk of a vehicular accident, please walk on the sidewalks as they were designed to be used. Another concern that is regularly brought to my attention in the spring is children driving golf carts. It is not legal outside or inside Corte Bella to allow children to operate golf carts.

8 | CB Times | The Official Community Magazine of Corte Bella

This creates a safety hazard to the children driving as well as your neighbors in the community. This applies to streets and all other areas and paths. Additionally, allowing children to operate a golf cart is against the rules in Corte Bella and an unsafe practice. Please take this into consideration before allowing grandchildren to operate your golf cart during spring break or any other time of the year. I know they love it and the temptation is to make them as happy as you can while they are visiting but this is truly an unsafe and illegal practice that could lead to a bad accident. Lastly, I have noticed and received reports of a lot of pets off their leashes in public. Again, this is against the law and the rules in Corte Bella as it is everywhere else. All pets are required to be on a leash and under the control of the owner while outside your private property. The reason is for the safety of your pet as well as others and their pets. I have seen many, many bad dog bites over the years to both humans as well as other pets and it is never good. A large dog can kill a smaller pet with one quick bite and it happens more often than you might think. There is also liability involved in instances like this that can be very detrimental to the pet owner and/or Corte Bella as a community. Over the years, I have seen residents bitten badly and left with a lengthy recovery period, pets that died due to being attacked by another dog and many lawsuits that could have been avoided just by simply keeping a pet leashed while in public. None of what I have written about here is personal opinion but rather based on fact and things I have seen regularly over the past 25 years as a community manager. I hope you will consider the advice I have provided and have a very enjoyable spring time. Please help our wonderful community avoid these potential incidents that could turn out very badly.

Board Talk Corte Bella 2017 Annual Membership Meeting Recap Congratulations to the four candidates that were elected by the Corte Bella membership. You elected Gary Ellwanger, Donna Norton, David Ornstein and Robert Rosenberg. Thank you to each of them for volunteering to serve our community. The 70-604 Revenue Michael McVeigh, President, Board of Directors Ruling passed with 399 (yes) votes versus 6 (no) votes. This ruling provides that net excess income carried forward to the following year is not taxable. First Service Residential (FSR) conducted its mandatory Board Training 101 on March 16th. Elected Directors will be seated at the Organizational meeting on March 30th. Officer and Committee liaison assignments will also be decided on at that meeting. A special thank you to departing Director Walter Kearns for his many years of dedicated service to our community. We had twelve presentations covering all of the committee activities throughout Corte Bella. Each of the presenters were asked to share 2016 Highlights; 2017 Challenges and to present a “Wish List” of things they would like to see going forward. Starting with the “State of the Community” presentation there were several things that dominated the evening’s presentations: we have great volunteers that continue to devote their time to making Corte Bella a fantastic place to live; the Anacapa restaurant is a valuable amenity and we need to ensure its service is second to none; our decision to invest in a full time Lifestyle Manager is paying precious dividends; building and furniture improvements are impressive; power and water initiatives are an ongoing challenge to lower costs; outreach programs are helping us to better understand what our neighbors are doing to stay focused on changing resident needs and finally, our IT path forward will take us to the Cloud.

Annual Membership Meeting Minutes, Standardized Committee descriptions, YTD Variance report, Income Statement Summary and our Consolidated Balance Sheet. Our primary 2017 challenge continues to be replacing Board and Committee members as they move on or when their terms expire. Our volunteer residents contribute expertise, experience and valuable time to the success of our community. I recently attended a legislative update and heard an HOA President talk about his community of 2680 homes. They only have three active Board members with no new candidate applicants for current Board replacements or four open positions. Come join our team of volunteers and help us avoid going down that road. We expect to have online voting this year and better use of customer surveys to help us understand what our residents want. An effort is already underway to consider revisiting the Anacapa Chartered Committee with the ultimate goal of improving the Anacapa and making it the best it can possibly be. Your thoughts, opinions, and concerns are very important to me as your Board President. Contact me anytime at mmcveigh3@ cox.net or 623-433-9921.

Lease vs. Buy Thursdays, May 18th or 25th at 10:00am Join us for a free seminar: Leasing vs. Buy-In Communities— Understanding The Financial Differences. Presented by Tom Mertensmeyer with Senior Financial Benefits, Inc. Complimentary refreshments will be served.

CULINARY

Exotic Asian Taste Sensation With the warmer temperatures of spring and the aromatic fragrances from blossoming flowers, this Asian dish tickles your taste buds and pleases your friends who have stopped by. Curry shrimp cuisine is a common delicacy in South Asia that balances the five fundamentals of flavor: hot (spicy), sour, sweet, salty and bitter. The bed of jasmine rice provides a sensuous Executive Chef Dan Haywood, underpinning for the seasoned shrimp and vegetables. Pair it with Anacapa Restaurant Indian bread, naan or chappati, to accent the taste explosion.

Green Curry Shrimp and Vegetables Jasmine Rice 2 cups jasmine rice 4 cups water • In a large bowl, rinse rice until water runs clear. • Place rice and water into a pot or rice cooker. Bring to simmer, if using stove top cook for 20-25 minutes. • Rice should not be stirred. Remove when all water has been absorbed. • Remove from heat and let stand 10-15 minutes. Serve warm.

• • • • • • • •

20 large shrimp, peeled and deveined, cleaned 1 small Chinese or Thai eggplant, sliced 1/2 red pepper, sliced 2 baby bok choy, sliced 4 sprigs Thai basil 2 cups green curry sauce – recipe 2 Tbsp. peanut or salad oil 4 cups cooked jasmine rice – recipe

Method:

1. In a medium size sauté pan on high, add ½ oil and add shrimp. Saute for 3-4 minutes until bright and ¾ cooked. Remove and set aside

2. With remaining oil, add to same pan and heat on high. Add eggplant, red peppers and bok choy and lightly saute for 3 minutes, or until nicely wilted. 3. Add shrimp back into pan and add sauce. Bring to simmer. 4. Let cook for 2-3 minutes and stir together. 5. Arrange 1 cup of rice in 4 wide dinner bowls. Spoon curry shrimp and vegetables around rice. 6. Garnish with Thai basil sprigs and serve immediately.

COMMUNITY

“You are a Piece of the Puzzle” Volunteers at Corte Bella Pam Lawrence National Volunteer month in the United States occurs in April. During this month, we celebrate the work that volunteers do year-round. April is dedicated to honoring all the volunteers in our community as well as encouraging volunteerism throughout the year. It is a special time at Corte Bella because we want to recognize and thank our volunteers for all their time, dedication, and passion in achieving their mission. This year’s HOA Volunteer Recognition Night event honoring those who have volunteered with the HOA over the past year will be held on April 9. This year’s theme is “You are a Piece of the Puzzle - Corte Bella Volunteers.” What this means is that each and every one of you are a perfect fit for our community!

Thank you to the HOA Board of Directors for establishing the Volunteer Recognition Program in May 2013. By doing so, it has enabled Corte Bella to promote and recognize volunteerism in our community. Volunteering should not be limited to serving on HOA committees, the Board of Directors or helping with an HOA event. There are several interest groups and clubs functioning with our gates who actively support worthy charities and non-profit organizations. For me, volunteering means doing something to make a difference in someone else’s life. Volunteering gives you an opportunity to give something back to society and a way of sharing with others. Listed below are the names of our volunteers. Be sure and thank them for their time, dedication and passion! Indeed, every one of You are a Piece of the Puzzle!

The HOA sponsored event, invitation only, will feature farm-totable local Arizona food products all prepared by the Anacapa team.

Clients have been asking me which product should be put on the face first…moisturizer or sunscreen? The answer depends on the kind of sunscreen you are using. A physical block (containing titanium dioxide or zinc oxide) can be applied over your moisturizer. But a chemical sunscreen (avobenzone or oxybenzone) works by interacting with your skin to absorb the sun’s rays and must penetrate whatever is already on your face to be effective. So it’s smart to apply this type before anything else. If your skin is very dry, you can probably use just one product, a moisturizing sunscreen with a SPF 30. Always remember if you are out in the sun for an extended period of time to reapply your sunscreen often. Happy Sunshine!!!

Volunteers Matter... Ryan’s Case for Smiles JoAnn M. Shaw

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” It is hard to believe that the Phoenix Chapter of Ryan’s Case for Smiles is entering our 3rd year of bringing smiles, love and support to sick children in our region: Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Banner Cardon Children’s Hospital and Banner Children’s at Thunderbird. Because of the incredible generosity of time and talent, the volunteers in our Chapter Gloria Bommarito and Patient have sewn and delivered over Zoey 15,000 fun, bright and happy pillowcases to our most vulnerable pediatric patients! We are so proud to be one of 120 Chapters serving 369 pediatric hospitals throughout the U.S. Collectively, in the first ten years of operation, we have sewn and delivered over 1.5 million pillowcases for smiles. The organization started with a simple plan: create and distribute whimsical pillowcases to give hospitalized children an emotional boost and remind them they are not defined by their illness.

NONE of this would be possible without the Corte Bella men and women who volunteer every month to meet our monthly delivery goal of 650+ pillowcases for smiles. Thank you to each and every one of you who has been a part of our journey. And especially, thank you to the children and their families who inspire us Sewing day at Corte Bella: with their courage, grace and Patti Collins, Celeste Nelson humor during one of life’s most and Paula Penkauskas harrowing moments.

Patients Hannah and Chris sewing

Patient Chris Today, Ryan’s Case for Smiles has a national reach, serving more than 50,000 children and their families. We have expanded our mission to include ALL children facing life changing illnesses and injuries, and partnered with the Center for Pediatric Traumatic Stress (CPTS) to develop tools to help prevent long term emotional trauma among children and their families.

“Our family was changed forever when our sweet Lucy was diagnosed with AML (Leukemia) at 14 months old. Her first pillowcase from you-Dora the Explorer, made her little face light up. We spent over 8 months in the hospital and your lovingly made pillowcases brightened her room. They became Lucy’s favorite “toys.” Did you think that a pillowcase could mean so much to Lucy and all of her family?

Lucy tragically passed away one month before her 2nd birthday. I am forever grateful to you and your volunteers. I made a memorial quilt out of her pillowcases. I have snuggled up in it and wrapped myself around the positive memories that I hold so closely. Each pillowcase tells a story and holds a memory of our time spent with our Lucy. Thank you so much.” Lucy’s mom Please contact JoAnn Shaw if you are interested in joining us They finished! at our monthly CB sewing event or if you would like more information on how you can help. Corte Bella Vets: Third Annual Charity Golf Tournament Gus Grissom On a windswept afternoon, the Corte Bella Vets, a 501 (c) (3) Veteran Service Organization, held their Third Annual Charity Golf Tournament at the Corte Bella Golf Club on Sunday, February 12. The activities started with the Honor Ceremony which featured the American Legion Post 94 Color Guard, the Corte Bella Chorus sang “God Bless America,” Bill Fedor (flugelhorn) and Dan Reed (trumpet) played the National Anthem and Taps, and John Mestemacher closed with a Moment of Silence to remember our fallen warriors. Golfers (all 133 of them!) were treated to a putting contest won by Corte Bella Golf Club member Bob Olson, an Air Cannon on #1 tee box and Hole-in-One prizes of $5,000 and a new $10,000 Columbia Par Car golf cart. Prizes were paid to the top three finishers in each of three flights and for longest drives and closest

to the pin on all par threes for women and men. Opportunities to win raffle prizes, a 50/50 drawing and Silent Auction items were also available. The event concluded with an outstanding steak and chicken buffet at the Anacapa Restaurant. Jeff Lane of Mercedes-Benz of Arrowhead presided over a surprise and greatly appreciated auction of a trip to Germany to pick up a new Mercedes-Benz automobile for the dealership. Fred Strouse was the generous winning bidder. All in all, $26,621 was raised for the benefit of Arizona’s needy veterans and their families. The Corte Bella Vets thank the Corte Bella Golf Club, Anacapa restaurant and their staffs, all the many volunteers, the participating golfers and of course, our generous sponsors and donors for making the event such a success. We look forward to the Fourth Annual Charity Golf Tournament scheduled for Sunday February 18, 2018!

What’s Been Happening in Corte Bella? Linda Wright

Secure Document Shredding on Monday, February 27

It’s an annual tradition and this year was no different. Corte Bella residents brought their bags and boxes of important personal documents to be shredded on this cool and blustery morning. Volunteers manned the event and directed traffic, off loaded many pounds of paper and greeted their neighbors with warm smiles.

Mardi Gras “Fat Tuesday” Dinner Dance on Tuesday, February 28

Mysterious and magnificent masks were in abundant supply at this wonderful buffet and dance event. Music, good food and lots of Mardi Gras decorative beads set the tone for an evening of fun, games and rocking out on the dance floor. Corte Bella knows how to party!

West Valley Wind Ensemble Spring Concert on the Lawn on Friday, March 3

Corte Bella residents sat out on the Anacapa lawn under a brilliant Arizona sunset while they enjoyed a professional quality concert of classical music from around the world performed by this wonderful group of musicians. Supporting the West Valley Food Back was an additional benefit for all those who attended this outdoor event.

Cactus League Spring Training Baseball at Goodyear Park on Tuesday, March 7

Arriving by comfortable bus at the facility, Corte Bella participants were treated royally with Terrace seating, private bar, and a private luncheon buffet. Watching the Cincinnati Reds battle the Kansas City Royals was fun and very relaxing for all who attended this event.

Desert Paintings Sharon Orlopp The Corte Bella Adventure Club hikes on a weekly basis and the hills are ablaze with spring colors, due in large part to our wet, rainy winter. The spring flowering season in Arizona runs from mid-February to mid-June with a peak between mid-March and late April. One of the closest and easiest hiking and biking areas is about 20 minutes away at the Phoenix Sonoran Preserve. The address is 1600 East Sonoran Desert Dr. in Phoenix. The trailhead is 5 ½ miles east of the W. Dove Valley Exit off Highway 17. There is no entry fee at the park. There are many trails to choose from— paved and unpaved. The best news of all—there are public restrooms. It is paradise for walkers, hikers, and bicyclists!

Another relatively close hiking area is at Lake Pleasant Regional Park. The address is 41835 N. Castle Hot Springs Road, Morrison, AZ. There is a $6 vehicle entry fee. Nine miles of new trails have been added in the past four months. The four newest trails are Yavapai Point, Beardsley, Wild Burro and Cottonwood. One of the most breathtaking seductive hikes is the Yavapai Point Trail.

As you hike the Yavapai Point Trail, you will be stunned by the sweeping vistas of wildflowers beckoning you to smell their delicate perfume. You will gasp at the stunning sunlight glistening off the lake as you hike the cliffs above the pristine shoreline. There are scenic viewpoints along the way which whet your appetite for the phenomenal eye-popping 360-degree panorama at the end of the trail. Along the way, we inhaled the heavenly aroma of brittlebrush with their silver, grey fuzzy leaves and small delicate yellow flowers. Fields of bright poppies danced in the sunlight with purple lupines standing stiff like soldiers guarding the desert. The chollo cactus sparkled like firecrackers while the sun bounced off their papery sheaths. Chollo are the only ones in the cactus family to have papery sheaths. One of the biggest desert transformations during the spring are the spindly ocotillos. They seem to reach to the sky with their wooden arms. When spring arrives, they sprout a dense coat of small dark green leaves on each spine and top it off with orange blossoms--similar to a cherry on top of an ice cream sundae. We kept our eyes peeled for wild burro and we weren’t disappointed. Sometimes you can get lucky and spot several of them eating and traveling together. During this incredible time of year with Mother Nature painting the desert in an array of intense colors, take the time to soak in our local natural beauty.

Cowboy Corgi Lore Callahan and Cooper Hi there! We are Callahan and Cooper, residents of Corte Bella. In our photo, we are sporting our cowboy bandanas. We like rounding ‘em up and moving ‘em out. We are Welsh Pembroke Corgis and our ancestors herald from Wales and Great Britain. Welsh legend has it that the Welsh Corgi is the enchanted dog of the Fay. Corgis were used by fairies and elves to pull their coaches or to serve as the steeds for their warriors. At night, the Welsh Corgi would slip away to the hills of Wales to play with the magical fairies and elves. If you have an understanding heart and a sharp eye, you can see the faint fairy saddle on the back of a Welsh Corgi and the harness marks on our shoulders. The two of us, Callahan and Cooper, are brothers from the same mother (and the same litter) so we can easily spot each other’s fairy saddle. True believers see the saddle very clearly. There are numerous theories as to where the word Corgi comes from. The first is that the name Corgi derives from the Celtic word for dog. Another theory is that the word Corgi is a mesh of the Welsh words, “cor” for “dwarf” and “ci” for “dog.” The latter half of the word, “ci” became “gi” which resulted in the word Corgi. We are the smallest of the herding group of dogs and we typically herd cattle. We are known as “heelers” because we nip at the heels of larger animals to keep them moving. Our low height (we are vertically challenged) and our quick agility keep us out of the way of cattle’s hooves. Some Corgis compete in dog agility trials where they can show off their herding instincts, obedience, showmanship, and tracking abilities. The herding trials are known affectionately as “mad

Callahan and Cooper in their cowboy bandanas runs.” Our mad runs consist of loops around the Corte Bella circle and mad dashes in our backyard, particularly when other dogs walk past our territory. We’ve been told that Welsh Corgis were once used to guard children. We are fond of guarding our spot on the couch and we love finding something to chew on to pass the time. Our human Mom says we were very easy to train and that we are intelligent too. We feel that we have done a good job training her so that she knows exactly what we need and want. If you have a story that you would like to share about your pet(s), please send the article and photo(s) to Sharon Orlopp at sorlopp@aol.com.

Cruising Through History

A Tribute to a Cruise from Istanbul to Venice Jerry Tinsley Lounging high above the azure sea, Aegean breezes cool you and me. What could be more romantic or serene, with deck chair, book, pool, sunscreen? Smiling waiter asks: ”What’d you like to drink?” We hardly have to stop to think, mai tai, coca cola, among numerous choices: “We’ll settle for water,” we say in unison voices Now meditating into relaxed reverie, muted mind scans sanguine scenes of history: Why so many eons of strife, limiting the length, love and meaning of life? Daily tours to silent sites of gilt antiquity stress events of ancient, and recent, iniquity: Cultural wars for land, greed and pride are endlessly detailed by guide after guide.

Greeks, Romans, Goths, Crusaders and Turks buried each other, their cities, and fine art works. Today, of course, we’re more sophisticated recognizing how all human beings are interrelated. How beautiful these lands of antique lore, as our western heritage, we now explore. We enjoy the architecture and the views, then we tip our guide a few EU’s. Too quickly we forget lost lessons of history, learning over and over lasting peace is no mystery: ‘the power of love over the love of power . . .’ many have said from their ivory, or ebony, tower. Mother Teresa, asked to protest war, gave us a thought we dare not ignore: ‘To have world peace (hear my homily), go home (now) and love your family.’ (Albanian accent) Yes, travel is thought-provoking and often inspiring, matching modest hopes when we thought of retiring. Now we’re home savoring our recent excursion, immersed in our memories as a summer diversion.

Corte Bellans Cycle to the Biltmore Sharon Orlopp The Corte Bella Adventure Club recently completed their second bicycling trip to the Biltmore Hotel, also known as the Jewel of the Desert. This 39-acre paradise in the heart of Phoenix boasts being known as a preferred vacation destination for Presidents and celebrities. There are eight amazing swimming pools, two stunning golf courses and many additional amenities. It is one of the few hotels in the world that is recognized as having Frank Lloyd Wright’s imprint. The avid cyclists trekked 36 miles roundtrip with only one road crossing. They jumped on the New River Trail, crossed the bridge into Rio Vista Park and turned onto the Skunk Creek Trail. The Skunk Creek Trail turns into the incredibly scenic Arizona Canal Trail which took them to the Biltmore Hotel. The team enjoyed a scrumptious lunch at the hotel before riding back to Corte Bella. Wally Goulet’s famous quote on this fabulous bike ride sums it up well, “This is the only time that I gain weight while on a 36-mile ride.”

Corte Bella Tennis Linda Briggs The West Valley Senior Women’s Tennis League sponsors competition at the 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 levels. Corte Bella has competed in each league for almost a decade. Matches with other West Valley retirement communities are quite competitive though friendly. Weather can also be a factor in tennis tournaments. March is typically known as the “sweet before the heat” but this year we’ve seen much warmer temperatures than normal. The Corte Bella 3.5 Women’s team finished just a single point behind the third-place team in the league. The members of the 3.5 team include captain Linda Sivakoff, co-captain Robin Culley, Elaine Uhren, Julie Embleton, Marya Butler, Colleen Miller, Jolene Piaskowski, Kathy Moody, Vicki Faaborg, Gloria Kerszykowski, Jan Harris, Karen Watkins, and Ming Fu. Captain Linda Briggs stated that there were many tough but close matches throughout the season and she extends kudos to all her teammates.
