ASSOCIATION
Who Doesn’t Want to Live in Corte Bella? As in all Homeowner Associations, there is sometimes contentious commentary regarding homeowners renting their property. At times, people renting a home are viewed by some as detrimental to the association for many reasons. As an Community Manager, I have learned over many years that this is not necessarily true. Yes, some renters do not share the “pride of ownership” more often exhibited by an actual property owner. However, Mike Arrington, Corte Bella Country Club Association, Inc. General Manager sometimes the owner of the property is lacking in that area as well. People are different and care about different things to differing degrees. For instance, I have known many renters over the years who exhibit just as much pride in caring for a property as the owner would or even more. Yes, to be fair, I’ve also seen it the other way. The reality is that people are people and some renters are beneficial to an association and take great care of the property they live in. They often contribute to the community in many ways. I’ve known them to volunteer and become a resource to the association when the actual owner might be an investor that could care less about the condition of the property as long as it is not vacant. The legal advice I have received over the years from many attorneys has always been consistent in that if the person(s) living in the home is not violating the CC&R’s, there should not be a concern. Now, in Corte Bella, there is an additional concern because we are an “age restricted” community and must meet certain requirements related to how many lots can be rented in order to maintain that legal status. The community tracks this and monitors the percentage so there is no need for concern. However, I am certain that there are a number of properties rented that are not reported to the association office. Therefore, it is very difficult to know for sure how many lots are actually being rented. Not reporting a renter in a lot is an owner violation of the CC&R use restrictions and an owner can be fined and sued in this case. As you might imagine, it is extremely difficult to prove in all cases if someone is renting the home or a portion of the home. Think about that for a moment – how would you know or prove if the person living next to you is a renter or an owner if you don’t have personal interactions with them? Maybe the owner is a snowbird and a relative is staying there or house sitting. How does this get reported to the HOA?
8 | CB Times | The Official Community Magazine of Corte Bella
You may have seen ads in publications of someone renting a casita but it is not illegal or a violation to advertise. So again, the end goal is compliance with the CC&R’s. Take care of the lot, don’t interrupt the neighbors’ right to quiet enjoyment of their lot, observe the parking restrictions, etc. That is all we should ask of renters in the community except that the owner report the rental to the HOA when under lease to ensure compliance. The Arizona Revised Statutes 33 – 1260.01 and 33 – 1806.01 make it very clear that there can be prohibitions on rentals in community declarations, as well as rental time period restrictions like the restrictions in Corte Bella CC&R’s. However, an Association may not require an owner or owner’s agent to disclose information about a tenant other than name and contact information of adults, the time period of the lease, and a description and license plate number of vehicles. Fees and fines must be the same for rental units and owner-occupied units. Associations also cannot prohibit off-site owners from serving on the Board. Finally, landlords cannot be required to provide a copy of the tenants’ rental application, credit report, lease agreement or rental contract the landlord might utilize. Over the 25 years I have been in the community management industry, these statutes have continued to become less restrictive on a regular basis. At the end of the day, courts tend to care less about the act of renting and are more interested in addressing the actions and behaviors of the renter(s). In other words, are they behaving and following the rules? Is the property in compliance? These are the considerations always recommended by attorneys when there is an issue with a renter. Although we encourage all homeowners to comply with the use restrictions in our CC&R’s and intend to enforce within a reasonable effort, policing the use restrictions related to renters in a community is possible but it can be a very expensive undertaking for a community when you consider the burden of proof and the cost of legal action for each case. Two final comments; the property owner is responsible and ultimately accountable for violating the use restrictions regarding renting their privately-owned lot and the Association will continue to reasonably enforce the rental policy. If you are a lot owner in Corte Bella, please respect your neighbors and follow the rules that you signed up for when you purchased your lot in Corte Bella. The most common violations of the Corte Bella rental use restrictions are renting of casitas or only a fraction of the home, or timesharing and leasing the home for less than 30 days at a time. All of this is prohibited. An owner who is not complying with these use restrictions is in violation of the governing documents and may be contributing to placing Corte Bella’s legal standing in jeopardy. If you are uncertain of the rules, please come see me, the General Manager, or visit the HOA office for an explanation. We are here to assist.
Board Talk As 2017 draws to a close, I would like to extend a sincere thank you to all of our residents and volunteers for helping to make our progress and prosperity possible this year. The SOul’s 2nd annual Chili Cook On behalf of the Board of Directors, I wish you and your loved Off was another outstanding event with over 300 attendees. ones a wonderful holiday season and a joyous New Year. Congratulations to the winners and all of the participants that made this event a success. The remaining events for December remind me how much Lynne and I really love living here. November and December are filled with many options for our residents and the 6th annual Corte Bella Christmas “Walk-About-Night” will be held on Friday, December 1st at “Your Northwest Valley Desert Oasis!” dusk. We have many new residents that have never seen this event. It’s one you will never forget. Thanks to the residents that make this happen each year for our benefit. Other events are included in this edition and the New Year’s Eve Extravaganza will be the finishing touch for 2017. Our Anacapa staff will be busier than ever this time of the year so please let them know you appreciate their efforts. The 2018 Budget is complete and should be in your hands around the same time as this publication. For the 4th consecutive year, we will not have an assessment increase and this is due to the fantastic efforts by our Finance committee, General Manager, and the Treasurer. We had some major budget challenges this year with the Arizona minimum wage increase impact but we were able to offset this with other cost controls and utility management costs. Everyone can help us help you in 2018

Happy Holiday Entertaining! The holidays are upon us which means plenty of time for relaxing, having fun, and entertaining friends, family, and loved ones. These two appetizer recipes will have your guests digging in for more! Gravlax is a Nordic dish which used to be made by fishermen in the Middle Ages who salted the salmon and lightly fermented it by burying it in the sand above the high-tide line. Gravlax comes from the Scandinavian term for grave (to dig, to bury) and lax (salmon). For our recipe, we will “bury” the salmon in a marinade consisting of salt, sugar and dill let it ferment for a few days.
Executive Chef Dan Haywood, Anacapa Restaurant
The garlic bruschetta appetizer continues with a fish theme with the addition of a pimento anchovy relish. Brushetta is low in fat and high in lycopene which is a potential cancer fighter.
Both of these dishes pack a wallop of a good time! Happy Holidays!
Dill Gravlax (Cured Salmon) Method:
1. With tweezers or pliers, pull out the inter-muscular bones of salmon. In a non-reactive dish (glass, porcelain, enamel or stainless) large enough to accommodate the salmon without crowding, scatter half of the sliced onions and sprinkle half of the dill on the onions. 2. In a small mixing bowl combine the salt, sugar, peppercorns and juniper berries and mix them well. 3. Rub half of this mixture into the flesh side of the salmon and rub half the juice and vanilla on the flesh. 4. Set the salmon flesh side down on the dill and onions. Rub remaining salt mixture into skin side of salmon and pour remaining lemon juice mixture over that. 5. Lay remaining dill on salmon, then cover with last of onion slices. 6. Cover with plastic wrap, then weigh the salmon down with bricks, small iron skillets or canned goods. 7. Cover the dish and weights with aluminum and refrigerate for 2 to 3 days. During the marinating time, spoon the juices the salmon gives off and marinade back over the salmon. 8. After 2 to 3 days, or when ready to serve, remove salmon from the marinade and scrape off dill and onions from skin side, but leave it on for garnish from flesh side. 9. Slice salmon as thinly as possible on diagonal toward tail and serve.

3 - 4 pounds side of boneless filet of salmon, skin left on 2 red onions, sliced wafer thin bunch fresh dill, leaves pulled off the stem, chopped 1/4 cup salt 1/2 cup sugar 1/4 cup green peppercorns, coarsely chopped 1 tablespoon juniper berries, lightly crushed juice of 2 lemons mixed with 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Garlic Bruschetta with Pimento Anchovy Relish • • • •
1 6” pc Sourdough Baguette 10 - 12 cloves garlic 2 cups olive oil Salt and Black Pepper
Pimento Anchovy Relish Method:
1. Combine ingredients in a small bowl. Let flavors marry for at least 30 minutes. 2. Spoon relish onto garlic crostinis; set aside.
• • • • • •
Method:
1. In a small sauce pan, add olive oil and garlic and heat oil until hot. Cover with aluminum foil. 2. Place in a 350 degree oven for 20 - 25 minutes until the cloves are nice and soft, with a nice roasted aroma. 3. While cooking the garlic, slice the baguette into 12 long slices, across the grain at an angle. These are now called crostini for bruschetta. 4. Lay crostini on a greased baking pan, and when the garlic comes out of the oven, brush liberally with the oil from the garlic. Place in oven for 6 - 10 minutes until golden and crisp. Remove from oven and let cool. 5. Take the garlic out of the oil and spread out on a cutting board. With the flat of the knife, crush the garlic cloves over and over until a paste forms. Stir back into the oil and season with a little salt and pepper. 6. Spread garlic paste onto the crostini.
1 cup chopped Spanish red pimento peppers 10 anchovies; drained, crushed 2 Tbsp basil leaves 2 Tbsp olive oil 1 pinch smoked paprika 1 lemon squeezed

Spotlight: Fernando Gonzales Cantera Barb Morin Imagine driving home after a wonderful evening of entertainment and fine dining with friends. You reflect on how great everything was and how savory and delicious your meal turned out to be. Already you’re making plans of doing this again soon. However, it is rare that people talk about what goes on behind the walls of restaurants where our orders are presented to the chef, carefully prepared and presented to our satisfaction. Now, let’s take another step backward and think of the very root of where our meal starts. You’re right, it all starts with having attractive clean dishes and clean eating utensils. I really think credit should start there and that’s why I chose this December’s Anacapa employee to be Fernando Gonzales Cantera. Fernando is our Anacapa dishwasher and has worked here for over six years. He recalls his first day was a great time in his life because he viewed it as a wonderful
opportunity with a new company. Six years is a long time and I asked of his motivation behind all that. He simply replied, “I really like my job here. I stay because I’m happy with the people I work with.” Just look at his picture and you quickly see the happiness and pride pouring out of his smile. Here’s a trivia question for our readers. What’s his busiest day at the restaurant? Fernando says, “Without a doubt, it’s Sunday.” Few people give their full names when asked but he wanted it that way. So, I just had to ask him if he was named after someone. “No, I’m an original,” he said in good humored fashion. Fernando was born in Hidalgo, Mexico which is named after Miguel Hidalgo Y. Costilla, the initiator of the Mexican War for Independence. Hidalgo is in central Mexico not far from Mexico City. Fernando left Mexico in 1982 to live with family in Texas. From Texas, he moved to Boston where he worked in the electronics field. He left Boston in 2002 and came to Arizona.

Fernando has been married 28 years and has four children; three boys and one girl. Their ages are 28, 27, 21 and 20. He’s also the proud grandfather of two grandchildren. His wife works as an Assisted Living Caretaker. Working in a restaurant atmosphere I asked if he likes to cook? He laughed, “No my wife does all the cooking.” Fernando is currently in the process of buying a home which has been one of his lifelong goals. One day he hopes to pay it off in full. Fernando enjoys his time off by relaxing with his family. He also enjoys watching soccer; his favorite team is the Pachuco soccer team from Mexico. Pachuco is the capital city of the state of Hidalgo. It was a pleasure meeting Fernando and talking to him. I ended our conversation by letting him know that we appreciate his dedication and hard work at the Anacapa. If you happen to see him on your next visit to the Anacapa, please let him know you appreciate his hard work as well.

Corte Bella Streetlights Bob Baldesari and Jim Dowen In 2014, the Government Affairs Committee (GAC) Chair, Diane Smith, Co-Chair, Doug Edwards, Regina Saborsky-Kimbel, Jim Dowen and Bob Baldesari, set out to reduce or eliminate the exorbitant charges Corte Bella was paying APS for 285 street lights which amounted to $271,607.52 annually. Between 2014 and early 2017 the team experienced delays, setbacks and some misinformation. In mid-2017 we were introduced to an APS manager who helped us achieve our goal. After several meetings with APS, we learned that due to recent changes in State law, APS no longer wanted to provide service for streetlights. APS offered to sell us the street lights for $469,284.54 and retrofit the poles with new LED luminaries for $368,107.22. The total outlay for Corte Bella would be $837,391.76. Although initially we did not plan to purchase the street lights, it made good business sense to do so to reduce our monthly lighting expense from $7,956.46 to $959.72, resulting in a monthly savings of $6,996.74. Purchasing the poles and bases would eliminate the monthly charges of $14,677.50 entirely. These actions result in a total monthly savings of $21,674.24 and an annual savings of $260,090.88. Our Agreement with APS and time schedule (see chart), negotiated by Regina Saborsky-Kimbel, required: (1) Corte Bella to pay for the installation of the new LEDs in full over a 4 week installation period; (2) APS to reduce lighting charges after 143 LED luminaries are in place; (3) after all of the

luminaries are installed and the final payment for them is made, Corte Bella to pay 50% of the purchase price for the poles and bases; (4) after the initial 50% payment for the poles and bases is made, the monthly charges for them will cease; (5) Corte Bella to pay the remaining balance for the poles and bases by not later than one year from the initial payment; and (6) no interest to be charged to Corte Bella. The new LED luminaries include a 5-year manufacturer’s warranty. The cost of a maintenance agreement for these luminaries, poles and bases is less than $1,000 per year. Holidays for Our Service Members Larry Leighton, President Corte Bella Vets At the Corte Bella Vets monthly meeting on Thursday, October 12, Jane Jorrisch told Corte Bella Vets about the “AdoptaPlatoon” organization (http://adoptaplatoon.org/). AdoptaPlatoon Soldier Support Effort® founded in 1998 is a volunteer based nonprofit 501C-3 dedicated to serving deployed United States Service men and women ensuring that they are not forgotten by a grateful nation. AdoptaPlatoon strives to provide a better deployment quality of life by sending cards, letters and care packages to lift the morale of troops as they serve far from home and assist military families. AdoptaPlatoon provides an on-going mail support system, creates projects that meet the need of military requests, and establishes special projects that benefit deployed troops representing all branches of the U.S. military. AdoptaPlatoon also serves injured troops through AAP Walking Wounded Project and assists military veterans who remain our nation’s heroes. At this time, AdoptaPlatoon has an ongoing campaign called Christmas Stockings from Santa for Our Troops. For purposes of this campaign, a platoon contains 20 service members (men and women from all services). Jane provided a list of the most requested items. One absolute key ingredient for each stocking is a holiday greeting card with your name so they know they are not forgotten.
After Jane’s explanation, most of the folks in attendance raised their hands to support and volunteer to help provide items and or stuff Christmas Stockings from Santa for Our Troops. Since this is our first time attempting this particular type of support, we’ve set a modest goal of providing four (4) platoons with stockings filled with $15 - $20 worth of items from the list. On November 15th, Santa’s helpers, Corte Bella Vets, met and filled stockings for the troops. Donations can be made at www.cortebellavets.org/currentevents.

Do You Like Numbers? Are You Looking for an Opportunity to Volunteer? We Need YOU! Kim Abrew
AARP Tax-Aide Volunteering
With the help of people like you, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide offers free tax-filing help to those who need it most. We’re looking for compassionate and friendly individuals to join our team of local volunteers in Sun City West for the upcoming tax season. You’ll receive training and continued support in a welcoming environment. And, you’ll not only learn new skills, but also get a great feeling from helping someone else.
Who will you help as a volunteer? We offer free tax preparation help to anyone, with special attention to older, low-income taxpayers. We understand that many individuals may miss out on credits and deductions they’ve earned because they can’t afford to pay for professional tax preparation. Last year in Arizona we prepared 48,000 returns from 78 AARP sites yielding refunds of $38.5M. That’s a lot of money to spend at Fry’s!
Good with the fine print? Be a volunteer tax preparer. You’ll work with taxpayers directly; filling out tax returns and helping them seek a refund. Experience isn’t necessary — the
program provides training and you will be tested to receive IRS certification.
Love working with people? Be a client facilitator. You’ll welcome taxpayers, help organize their paperwork and manage the overall flow of service.
Have a knack for running things? Be a leadership or administrative volunteer. Manage volunteers, make sure program operations run smoothly, track volunteer assignments and site activities, and maintain quality control.
Where do I sign up you ask? You can submit an application at the AARP web site. Go to www.AARP.org and click on the tab for Volunteers. Scroll down the page to select AARP Tax Aide program and you’ll find a place to submit an application. If you have any questions or want more information you can call me (Kim Abrew) at 623 203 4213 or email me at gkabrew@ cox.net. I’ve been a volunteer in the program for 10+ years and have found it to be very fun and fulfilling. We look forward to hearing from more Corte Bella residents to participate in this program!
Calling All Volunteers! Nancy Wendler Your fire department in Sun City West, the Arizona Fire & Medical Authority, is now accepting applications for volunteers for our award-winning Fire Corps program. Members will participate in a nationally recognized program assisting the fire department with non-emergency activities that fit your individual skillset, from office work to installation of smoke alarms and lockboxes. Fire Corps members also attend public events representing our organization by delivering fall prevention and fire safety materials. If your background is in the healthcare field, we have openings for CPR and AED instructors as well. Fire Corps members get to experience the pride of working with their fire department and making a positive difference in peoples’ lives.
For more information, contact Thomas O’Dononhue at (623) 544-5400 or email: todonohue@AFMA.az.gov.

Adventure Club Sharon Orlopp Our schedule for the 2017-2018 season is taking shape with many of our favorite hikes: Sedona’s gorgeous Boynton Canyon, Soldier’s Pass, and Brins Mesa Trail; Granite Hotshot Memorial Park that honors the fallen hotshot firefighters; Cave Creek’s Go John Trail, a full moon hike at Deem Hills, and the Ford Canyon Trail in the White Tank Mountains. We will be doing our traditional Thanksgiving hike at Vulture Peak in Wickenburg, and our Christmas season hike to Camelback Mountain.
Our hiking season finale in April 2018 will be a guided kayak tour down the Colorado River from Hoover Dam to Willow Beach. This is a 12-nautical mile, eight-hour tour through Black Canyon. Stops are made to visit the natural hot springs and to paddle in and out of several caves including the Emerald Cave known for its brilliant, sparkling green water. Our biking schedule includes the incredibly scenic ride to the Arizona Biltmore Hotel along the New River Trail, Skunk Creek Trail, and the Canal Trail. A regular favorite is biking, hiking, and walking at Apache Wash where both mountain biking and road biking trails exist in a spectacular desert setting.
The Granite Hotshot Memorial Park hike commemorates the lives of nineteen hotshot firefighters who lost their lives on June 30, 2013 near Yarnell City. A newly released movie, Only The Brave, portrays the journey of this incredible group of men. The movie has received a 4 ½ star rating out of a total of 5 stars. The hike includes bronze plaques every 600 feet that provide insight into each firefighter’s life. The fatality site is poignant and reverent.
There is no cost to sing up for the Corte Bella Adventure Group and you attend the events that interest you. For more information on joining, contact Steve Downing at sd85383@gmail.com.

Grand European Tour Shirley Panek Our grand European tour with 44 others started on the day of the solar eclipse. We traveled Europe together on a 23-day, 11-country adventure. We flew from Toronto to London where we enjoyed a guided sightseeing tour which included Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, and the Houses of Parliament. Buckingham Palace is only open for tours one month a year, so we took advantage of the opportunity. The next day we saw the white cliffs of Dover and crossed into France by ferry and continued by road into Belgium. We explored the medieval town of Bruges with its cobbled streets and canals. Then we journeyed into Germany, arriving at Boppard for a Rhine cruise past medieval ruins to St. Goar, and admired the magnificent sandstone castle at Heidelberg. We drove through the Black Forest in south-west Germany to the Swiss border. We stopped at the Rhine Falls at Schaffhausen, the biggest waterfall in Europe. We next arrived in Lucerne for two days and admired the poignant Lion Monument and the 14th century wooden Chapel Bridge spanning the River Reuss. That night, we enjoyed a tasty Swiss meal, including the famous cheese fondue. There was a show with audience participation, so seven of us were selected to go onstage and yodell, and drink a full glass of beer to our cheering audience. We traveled to Austria and followed the Arlberg route through the Tyrol to Innsbruck and saw the Golden Roof. In Salzbug, Mozart’s birthplace, we explored the city on a walking tour and saw locations that are featured in The Sound of Music. In Vienna, we viewed the State Opera House, the Hofburg, City Hall, Parliament and the Imperial Boulevards. The Imperial Summer Palace of Schonbrunn offers an amazing journey through the centuries of Hapsburg rule. It is perfectly preserved and richly
decorated with treasures from around the globe. That night, we had a wonderful evening of all things Viennese. A superb dinner followed by a concert of Viennese classical music. Works by Johann Strauss and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart were performed. In Venice we cruised by private launch to St. Marks Square and saw the Bridge of Sighs and the Doge’s Palace, and we took a gondola ride while being serenaded by local musicians. Later, a private water taxi took us along Venice’s Grand Canal to admire the magnificent palazzos and Rialto Bridge. We traveled South to Assisi, on the slopes of Mount Subasio. Our tour included Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels and St. Francis’ Basilica. Our local specialist revealed the unique history of Pompeii during a very interesting walking tour. We drove along the famous Almalfi coast and visited the exclusive artist’s paradise of Positano, Italy, on the Mediterranean coast. By ferry, we arrived at the enchanting Isle of Capri. In Rome, we gained priority access to the Vatican Museums and had a guided tour of Michelangelo’s magnificent frescoed ceiling in the Sistine Chapel. We discovered the hidden backstreets, piazzas and fountains of the “Eternal City.” Along the way, we marveled at the timeless Pantheon, the best preserved Roman temple in the world. We continued our journey and saw the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. After, we crossed the French border to the magnificent Riviera we stopped in the Principality of Monaco. We drove along the Promenade des Anglais and saw Place Massena on our arrival in Nice. From the wine capital of Burgundy to the capital of France, we made our way to Paris. We saw and shopped along the Champs Elysees, the Arc de Triomphe and Place de la Concorde during our sightseeing tour. Paris at night is a city transformed into a superb “City of Light.” This was a trip of a lifetime for us.

LGBTQ Interest Group An organizational, social support group meeting for all Corte Bella LGBTQ persons and allies is taking place on Tuesday, January 9 at 6:30 pm. We are welcoming and inviting all Corte Bella residents (owners and renters) who are LGBTQ, or those who have family members who are LGBTQ, or those who are allies of the LGBTQ community. An ally is someone who is heterosexual but believes in equal rights and inclusion for LGBTQ people. Aging presents special challenges for the LGBTQ community for several reasons. In the United States, about 80% of long-term care for older people is provided by family members, such as spouses and children. LGBT elders are only half as likely to have close family to help as they age. According to Michal Adams, Executive Director of SAGE, Services and Advocacy for LGBTQ Elders, LGBTQ older people experience high rates of social isolation. They are twice as likely to be single and live alone, and three to four times as likely to be childless. The creation of an LGBTQ interest group will help create new relationships and strengthen friendships within Corte Bella. It provides the foundation for creating a sense of belonging.
Our neighboring communities of Sun City, Sun City West, Sun City Grand, and Surprise have active LGBTQ groups----it’s time to add Corte Bella to the list and demonstrate inclusion and support. Appetizers and beverages will be provided free at the introductory meeting on January 9th. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP by email to blanchmd@aol.com before January 6th. All names and emails will be confidential. Best wishes for safe and happy holidays!

Focus on Your Camera: Learning to Take Your Photos to the Next Level Chelle Mestemacher and Cheryl Gross We are the West Valley Photography Club (WVPC). We’re a diverse group of folks of photographic levels and skills who love doing photography, sharing our photos, and learning new skills and techniques. We meet the fourth Tuesday evening of the month in a meeting room across the breezeway from Anacapa at 6:30 p.m. Our monthly meetings include speakers, photo sharing slide shows, teaching techniques, and more. Something can always be learned at our meetings. Additionally, we offer numerous outings either for a few hours or a weekend trip to unique destinations and hidden gems all over our beautiful state of Arizona. Some of our members enjoy the challenges we present, while others are comfortable shooting at their own paces. While photographic competitions are not for everyone, we encourage and support all who wish to do so.
Pick up reflection: Photographer Norma Clark If joining WVPC interests you, as an extra thank you we are offering workshop attendees free membership for 2018! We are a friendly group, and you are always welcome among us. We’d love to see you participate in the programs and field trips we offer, and all are good opportunities for socializing and widening your photographic horizons. We hope you will join us on January 13 and perhaps become a member of our club. We are open to all in our state, regardless of where you reside.
Mexican pottery: Photographer Denise Armstrong In recent months we have unveiled our new website and are excited to share that link with you: http://www.westvalleyphotoclub.com. From the Menu in the upper left corner you can browse our photo albums and view our events calendar. As a thank you to Corte Bella for always making us feel welcome and accommodating us for our monthly meetings and special events, we are holding a free-to-residents “Focus on Your Camera: Taking Your Photos to the Next Level” short course Saturday, January 13, 9:00-12:00, in the Bella Stanza room across from Anacapa. Five of our members will give presentations on cell phone photography as well as point-and-shoot, DSLR, mirrorless, plus film photography. Bring your camera or cell phone. There will be a short Q & A after each presentation. To register for Focus on Your Camera, contact Chelle Mestemacher: jonchell@sbcglobal.net or 816.309.3700.

Pet Paradise and Protocol Buddy and Molly Hi, our names are Buddy and Molly. We are brother and sister cock-a-poos. We love it here in Corte Bella! When we walk the “loop” we get to say hello to many other dogs. When we say hello to other dogs, we are not shy about going straight for the private areas---that’s one of the perks about being a dog! We immediately get to intimate business without the small talk. Compared to where we used to live, our owners are very focused on picking up any gifts or droppings that we leave. There is something about walking in fresh air that releases the need to do our business. Fortunately, there are many spots in Corte Bella where those gifts can be deposited in garbage cans and new green gift bags are available for free. Every now and then we run into a pile of gifts that haven’t been picked up. This is yucky for both pets and owners, so please bark at your owner and insist that they pick up the gift you have left on the ground.
One other disgusting thing we have seen while walking in the neighborhood during the holidays are pets who treat holiday decorations and lights as their personal urinals. Gross! We all love the incredible displays of holiday cheer, so let’s find rocks, grass or bushes rather than holiday lights and yard décor for raising our legs or squatting. The holiday decorations in the San Ramon area are AMAZING and it’s a unique treat to be able to walk in that neighborhood and feel like we are immersed in a winter wonderland. Let’s show our neighbors in San Ramon how much we appreciate them by paying extra attention to keeping their yards clutter free and not using their yards as our personal restrooms What we love best at Corte Bella is Yappy Hour at the Lanai at 4:00 every day. Wow is that fun! There are many other dogs to play with and lots of laps to sit on while being petted. Corte Bella is paradise for pets---we hope to keep it that way by always being respectful of common areas and other people’s property.

What’s Been Happening in Corte Bella? Linda Wright
Corte Bella Fall Marketplace October 29
This annual Corte Bella event brings dozens of vendors to our community and provides opportunities to get a jump on holiday shopping, sample some great food and enjoy a community craft fair right in our own back yard. This year there was a Chinese food truck and some home improvement vendors as well as all the talented home business crafters who make this a fun place to shop every year.
Cooking with Chef Dan – The Food of Spain November 3
Anacapa Executive Chef, Dan Haywood, presented a wonderful and varied demonstration of how to prepare Spanish food to an attentive audience of men and women of Corte Bella. The menu included potato and mozzarella croquettes, Spanish paella with seafood and sausage, and delicious leche frita (fried milk) for dessert. The cooking class was both informative and delicious.

Halloween in Corte Bella October 31
There were belly laughs aplenty in the Corte Bella Santa Barbara Room on Friday night, November 3rd. A sold-out crowd enjoyed the antics and clean comedy of Jason Love, Kira Soltanovich, and Isaac Torres. Jason’s shows are ever so popular here in Corte Bella and he will be back in January with two other comedians to continue these “laugh out loud” events.
Some Spooky Folks in Corte Bella on Halloween! There may not have been a formal party, but a number of folks dressed up anyway and came to the Anacapa Happy Hour in creative costumes.

Tubac Fall Arts & Crafts Festival Day Trip
Fall Concert on the Lawn
Corte Bella residents traveled to the southern part of Arizona to the artist colony and historic village of Tubac. They enjoyed shopping and dining at the Tubac Fall Arts & Crafts Festival. Those who took this trip found unique shopping and wonderful food offerings from more than 100 different booths, shops and stands set up for the festival.
The West Valley Wind Ensemble came back for a third Fall concert and played to a large crowd of Corte Bella residents who gathered on the Anacapa patio and front lawn to listen to a variety of concert band arrangements performed by this fifty- member all volunteer ensemble. The evening was perfect with clear, crisp skies and the sounds of concert music filled the air. Attendees donated canned goods and cash donations to help the West Valley Food Bank.

Smiling Out Loud’s (SOuL) 2nd Annual Chili Cook Off and Country Hoe Down November 6

Corte Bella turned out in force to support this fund-raising event and enjoyed sampling 16 chili entries of varying spiciness and flavor profile. SOuL volunteers created a county western ambience with wonderful decorations and provided all who attended with a delicious chili dinner and country line dancing on the patio. Fabulous raffle prizes were awarded along with the winners of the chili competition. It was another amazing SOuL charity event!

Verde Canyon Train Ride November 11
On a perfect autumn day, 55 Corte Bella residents rode the Verde Canyon Train from historic Clarksdale to Perkinsville and back. During this four-hour journey, they viewed lovely fall foliage, glorious views of the “other Grand Canyon,” and enjoyed the wonderful ambience of a first-class coach with delicious food and drink. The open-air cars attached to the main riding cars allowed for amazing photos and a full appreciation of this beautiful creation of nature.

Veteran’s Day Dinner and Dance November 11
It’s a Corte Bella tradition and Corte Bella residents turned out in force to recognize and honor the service of all veterans of the United States military branches. An inspiring presentation of the Colors by the Dysart High School JROTC, singing of the National Anthem by the Corte Bella Chorus, and posting of the military branch service flags by members of the Corte Bella Veterans Group were all part of a respectful and patriotic program. A delicious three-course meal from Chef Dan and the Anacapa was followed by music and dancing courtesy of DJ Ray Mar. This event is always one to remember.
