ASSOCIATION
Looking Forward to 2017 Happy New Year! 2017 is here and I am excited. A whole new year of challenges lies ahead and there is much to do. Everyone has heard the saying “the more things change, the more they stay the same.” What in the heck does that even mean? I never Mike Arrington, Corte Bella Country Club Association, Inc. General Manager
understood or bought into that. I prefer “change brings progress” myself. This helps me to see everything as an opportunity as opposed to adversity and to move forward with hope and determination regardless of circumstance. That certainly is the case here at Corte Bella in the New Year. We are moving into 2017 with hope and a lot of determination. Our Anacapa restaurant has a brand new face. We have new team members, Pamela Barnard and Brett Lancaster, in the “front of the house” and we are continuing to add to the team.
8 | CB Times | The Official Community Magazine of Corte Bella
I have high expectations for these folks and have already had a few glimpses of what is to come as they continue to hire and train the new staff to do things the Anacapa way. You can expect great things from them and an Anacapa team that will continue to impress as time goes on. Anacapa is going to the next level of service. We also brought in a new Lifestyle Manager in the last half of 2016. Pamela Lawrence has already created more fun and entertaining activities for Corte Bellans and she has had some time to work her magic. Now that we have moved into 2017, you can expect a calendar that is chock full of new, quality events and activities. Pam’s energy has been contagious to all who have met her and she too is expected to produce great results for our residents’ lifestyle this year. Corte Bella’s lifestyle is alive, well and about to explode. I am excited to work with all of the new additions to the staff as well as veterans of our amazing team. I know that they all continue to work hard as they take great pride in their jobs and commit to another great year at Corte Bella for you. Their efforts are tireless and relentless. I hope you enjoy what is to come with what is anticipated to be another excellent year here at Corte Bella.
January CB Times Board Talk As we close out 2016 and as 2017 begins to dawn, it seems like a great time to reflect on what we’ve accomplished, the challenges we faced and the exciting times we look forward to in the coming year. As I look around, I see new outdoor furniture; completed granite replacement; Michael McVeigh, President, Board of Directors
wedding fountain replacement; new pergola and shade additions at the Social Hall and Anacapa patio; upgraded TV’s with HD capability in the Anacapa and Social Hall; asphalt seal project and many other investments that are not as visible to the human eye. All of these improvements are the direct result of our community volunteers working in partnership with our General Manager, Mike Arrington, and his staff. I would also like to add that these accomplishments came without an assessment increase for 2017. We’ll start by telling you how much we appreciate each member of our current Board and the dedicated committees serving Corte Bella. The 2017 election information has been mailed and we’ll have four open Board positions to fill in the upcoming election. I know we can count on members of our beautiful community to consider joining our team. Some have already contacted me with general questions about the openings. If you have any interest, please contact me and I will be happy to spend some time with you discussing the openings and Board member responsibilities. I’m also hoping that some of the current committee members will consider moving on to one of the open Board positions. I know you are out there! 2017 will bring exciting new opportunities with the Technology Committee (IT managed services contract); Government Affairs Committee (EPCOR water initiative); Long Term Planning Committee (strategic positioning); Neighborhood Safety &
Awareness Committee (community safety issues); Building & Grounds (current and future needs of office, storage and facilities); Architectural Rules Committee (review and approval of all guidelines and modifications to ensure our community remains beautiful) and the Finance Committee (manage the community’s financial health). The leadership of these committees is the engine of the community and we are very fortunate to have them engaged on our behalf.
“
The 2017 election information has been mailed and we’ll have four open Board positions to fill in the upcoming election.
Finally, please stop by and meet our new Anacapa leadership team. Deangelo, Pam and Bret are all looking forward to showcasing their new associates in the restaurant. They brought with them a breadth and depth of knowledge and expertise which was just what we needed. Whew – their plate will be full! Our Anacapa management team is complete, synergetic and fully functional! We are proving the old adage that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. We are fortunate to have this exciting new team and look forward to seeing them exceed our dining expectations. Together, we can make a difference here in Corte Bella. Stop by and say Hello! We hope you had a wonderful holiday season and a joyous New Year. The holiday activities throughout Corte Bella along with the many dining opportunities should have all of us spending some time at the Fitness Center in the coming year. The next Board workshop will be held Friday, 1/20 at 9:00 a.m. and the next Regular Board meeting, Wednesday, 1/25, at 10:00 a.m. All residents are welcome and encouraged to attend. Your thoughts, opinions, and concerns are very important to me as your Board President. Contact me, anytime, at mmcveigh3@cox.net or 623-433-9921.

Warm Winter Palate Pleaser This pork loin roast recipe is a palate pleaser for winter months with the crisp fruity taste sensation created by apples and cranberries. The simmering, hearty roast harkens visions of a romantic fire with loved ones and friends enjoying memorable conversations.
Filling: • • • • •
Executive Chef Dan Haywood, Anacapa Restaurant
• • • • •
1 cup apple cider 1/2 cup red wine or cider vinegar 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar ¼ white onion, peeled and chopped 1 1/2 cups chopped apples, Gala is preferred 1/2 cup dried cranberries 1 Tbsp grated fresh ginger 1 Tbsp yellow mustard seeds 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice ¼ cup butter, cubed
Apple Cranberry Stuffed Pork Loin Roast Recipe Method: •

Before starting on the pork, put the pork roast in the freezer for 30 minutes to make it easier to cut. While the pork is chilling, you can make the filling. Bring all the filling ingredients to simmer in medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Cover, reduce heat to low, and cook until apples are very soft, about 20 minutes. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve, reserving the liquid. Use a rubber spatula to press against the apple mixture in the sieve to extract as much liquid out as possible. Return liquid to saucepan and simmer over medium-high heat until reduced to 1/2 cup, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat, set aside and reserve this liquid for use as a glaze. Pulse apple mixture in food processor, about fifteen 1-second pulses. Set aside.
Pork Roast Preparation
2 1/2 pound boneless center-cut pork loin roast (short and wide - about 7-8 inches long and 4-5 inches wide) Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1. Preheat oven to 350°F or prepare your grill for indirect heat. 2. You will be “butterflying” the pork roast. 3. Lay the roast down, fat side up. Insert the knife into the roast 1/2-inch horizontally from the bottom of the roast, along the long side of the roast. 4. Make a long cut along the bottom of the roast, stopping 1/2 inch before the edge of the roast. You might find it easier to handle by starting at a corner of the roast. 5. Open up the roast and continue to cut through the thicker half of the roast, again keeping 1/2 inch from the bottom. Repeat until the roast is an even 1/2inch thickness all over when laid out. 6. If necessary, pound the roast to an even thickness with a meat mallet. 7. Season the inside of the roast well with salt and pepper. 8. Spread out the filling on the roast, leaving a 1/2-inch border from the edges. 9. Starting with the short side of the roast, roll it up very tightly. Secure with kitchen twine at 1-inch intervals. Season the outside of the roast generously with salt and pepper. 10. Place roast on a rack in a roasting pan, place in oven, on the middle rack. 11. Cook for 45 to 60 minutes, until the internal temperature of the roast is 130 to 135 degrees. Brush with half of the glaze and cook for 5 minutes longer. 12. Remove the roast from the oven or grill. Place it on a cutting board. Tent it with foil to rest and keep warm for 15 minutes before slicing. 13. Slice into 1/2-inch wide pieces, removing the cooking twine as you cut the roast. Serve with remaining glaze. 14. Serve with your favorite vegetables and potatoes….Enjoy!

COMMITTEE
From Your ARC: Architecture Review Committee Dan Luparello, Chairman Things change. Rules change. Requirements change. Things that were allowed are no longer and things that were forbidden are now just fine. That is the nature of the ever-evolving life we live today. And that is also the nature of the Corte Bella Design Guidelines. In this, our second of a series of articles about the Design Guidelines, we will discuss the age-old question of “Why was someone else allowed to do it and I’m not.” There may be several reasons for this. First, the Guidelines may indeed have changed. The rules may have changed allowing something new or disallowing something from the past. That is why we ask that you review your Design Guidelines prior to making a request for home improvements. Secondly, the item in question may never have been allowed in the first place. There are homeowners who make changes to their property without submitting an application first. When instances like this come to the attention of the HOA, a violation most often occurs. Thirdly,
your application may be incomplete or does not meet the Design Guidelines. Lastly, a variance from the Guidelines may have been given to a homeowner because of a unique circumstance. For example, the property may have natural obstructions or unusual topography, or a variance may have been given for environmental reasons or a hardship. The important points to remember are that no two properties are alike and no two submittals are the same. Each must be judged on its own, following the Guidelines in affect at the time of the submittal. And where the Guidelines call for judgment, the ARC uses as its guiding principle, the original intent, design, and purpose of the community. It is never an easy decision to disapprove a homeowner’s request and the ARC does not take its job lightly. Our goal is always to keep Corte Bella the community to which you were first attracted. The dedicated staff in the HOA office can assist with any questions you may have as you embark on future home improvements or you may always contact one of the ARC members.
Corte Bella Long Term Planning Update Tom Penkauskas The Long Term Planning Committee (LTPC) is now fully staffed with the recent addition of Karen Schmidt to the team. Other members are: Barb Drury. Bob Fletcher (Vice Chair), Rick Furkert, Chuck Hokans, Tom Penkauskas (Chair), Hal Reed, Dave Wright and Dave Saulnier. The approach being taken by the LTPC is to start with the Corte Bella mission statement and propose ideas and solutions that lead us toward making that mission statement a reality and a vision for the future.
Communications inside and outside Corte Bella
An ad hoc team was formed under the guidance of Dave Wright. In addition to Barb and Hal, residents that participated are Linda Wright, Jolene Piaskowski, Coleen Miller and Sharon Orlopp. At a strategic level, fourteen main topics on communications and thirty-five sub topics were identified, prioritized and approved by the LTPC. This plan will be presented by the General Manager to the Board of Directors at an upcoming workshop. A big thank you goes out to all involved. Included in communication is our ‘Outreach Team’ headed by
Rick Furkert and supported by Barb and Bob. The purpose of this group is to reach out to comparable HOA communities to share ideas and best practices.
Preserve, maintain, enhance and protect community assets
An ad hoc team was recently formed under the direction of Tom Penkauskas. In addition, Chuck Hokans (Finance) and Dave Saulnier (B&G) are currently on the team. We are currently looking for residents to round out the ad hoc team. Send your request to participate to communication@cortebellcca.com and include LTPC in the subject line. We are currently developing an electronic survey to solicit resident input to help us determine near and far term community improvements.
Promote a sense of community
This ad hoc team is in the early stage and will focus on volunteerism. If you would like to participate in the future of Corte Bella, please attend our general meeting on the third Monday of the month at 3:00 in the Bacara Room or send an email to communication@cortebellcca.com with LTPC in the subject line.

Courtesy, Kindness and Common Sense Mark Woods, Neighborhood Awareness and Safety Committee We live in a beautiful community. We’re surrounded by great neighbors. But sometimes we don’t appreciate the impact our simple choices make on our neighbors and their potential safety. Some of the simplest choices are where and how we park our vehicles. Consider our community and its demographics. That is a polite way to say we are “aging.” We have neighbors with mobility challenges. We have others with vision impairments. But when we look around the community this does not seem to be taken into consideration. In an interview with Nic Watson, Securitas, he mentioned several examples of parking problems within the community. One that he sees too frequently is cars and carts parked on sidewalks. This is not just wheels a little too far on the curb; it is vehicles parked entirely blocking sidewalks. This creates potential problems for our neighbors who try to use the walkways, as they are suddenly forced into the street. Possibly into the path of traffic. This is not only dangerous for our neighbors, it is illegal. Another set of problems that were pointed out include vehicles that park too close to fire hydrants and intersections. Remember that a “T” intersection is still an intersection. We need to leave these traffic-ways clear for emergency vehicles and large trucks that use our streets. When a fire truck or semi enters an intersection, they need more room. Our choice on where to park could very well impact the response to an emergency and result in damage and, again, a possible ticket. A less obvious problem includes blocking someone’s mailbox. It is sometimes difficult to avoid obstruction of a mailbox, but when we block the box someone does not get their mail. Again, it is also a violation of state law. Lastly, I will point out the problem of parking on the wrong side of the street. Why is this a problem?
When you park on the left hand side of the street you have to pull across both lanes to reenter traffic. Our sight lines are not as good on the passenger’s side and other traffic does not expect this move. Also in the evening hours our headlights will disorient others, as we cross the roadway. Is the possible accident worth the moments’ inconvenience? Lieutenant Waldsmith, Sun City West Posse, encourages you to call the Sheriff’s office at their non-emergency number, 602.876.1011, if you encounter parking situations that may impact safety or are recurring.
Reminder: Quarterly Assessments Mike Arrington, Corte Bella Country Club Association, Inc. General Manager As a reminder, payments of quarterly assessments to the association are due on the first day of January, April, July and October each year. Late fees are applied if payment is not received at the payment address shown on your statement by the 15th of the month in which it is due. This reminder is being sent
due to some instances of residents not paying on time because “they did not receive a statement”. It is important to note that the postal service no longer forwards these statements. Late fees are not waived due to “not receiving a statement”. As a recommendation, please note calendars to reflect the (4) four quarterly due dates each year and the payment address as shown on your statement in case you do not receive a statement for any reason. This is an attempt to assist in reducing the amount of late fees incurred by Corte Bella residents. Thank you.

SOuL Hosts the 4th Annual Holiday Bake Sale and Boutique Nancy Healey and Linda Wright, SOuL members The Corte Bella Santa Barbara room was an amazing sight on Saturday, December 3rd when the doors opened for SOuL’s (Smiling Out Loud) annual holiday bake sale. SOuL tables were arranged beautifully with cookies (more than 700 dozen were home baked by SOuL members), assorted holiday breads, homemade toffee, jellies and savory snacks plus a variety of specially prepared salsa. All the home baked goods were creatively packaged and displayed by SOuL committee volunteers. In addition, assorted local vendors displayed beautiful crafts items including purses, jewelry, gift baskets, home décor, pillow cases, pottery, handcrafted greeting cards and Christmas decorations.
SOuL member Susan Demchak and her husband Jim display the amazing homemade salsa offerings at the SOuL Holiday Bake Sale. SOuL (a charity support organization of women in Corte Bella) will dedicate the proceeds of this event to Eve’s Place, a nonprofit mobile advocacy organization which provides assistance to victims of domestic and sexual abuse. Through the efforts of SOuL members over the past four years, more than $25,000 has been raised to benefit Eve’s Place. For each of the past four years the following members of SOuL have worked tirelessly to organize and prepare this annual bake sale event. SOuL salutes their contributions of countless hours and efforts. • • • • • •
SOuL’s raffle basket event featured donations from many local vendors and businesses. The highlight of the basket was a handmade gingerbread house created by SOuL member, Arleen Kann, who fashioned a masterpiece. Registration fee includes golf, cart, dinner (choice of steak or chicken at the Anacapa Restaurant) and other opportunities for just $140 per golfer. It includes a $60 tax-deductible donation to help Arizona Veterans. For Corte Bella Golf Club members, the registration fee is $85. Come participate as a single or bring your foursome! Note that you do NOT have to be a veteran to participate in this tournament! Registration and sign-in begin at 9:00 a.m. followed by an Honor Ceremony at noon and a shotgun start at 12:30 PM. All Corte Bella residents are welcome to attend the Honor Ceremony, hear the Corte Bella Singers and peruse/bid on the Silent Auction items. Golf contestants will compete for cash awards paid to the top three teams in each flight. Raffle prizes (need not be present
to win), a Silent Auction and on-course contests will all add to the fun. Various levels of sponsorships are available. Contact Gus Grissom (Airtoyz@aol.com or (719) 651-0927) for more information, or visit our website at http://cortebellavets.org/ current-events to register, become an event sponsor or make a donation.
Corte Bella Vets Expand Membership As we head into the New Year, the Corte Bella Vets want to invite ALL Corte Bella residents to join our group! Initially, we limited membership to full or part time residents who served honorably in any component (Active, National Guard, or Reserve) of our Nation’s Armed Forces and anyone who served honorably in the Armed Forces of our Nation’s Allies. We know there are many fellow residents who are not Veterans but firmly and wholeheartedly Support Our Troops and our Veterans and Veterans’ families. We want to offer you the opportunity to join our group. We meet on the first Tuesday of every month from 8:30 – 10:30 in the Social Hall. We generally have a guest speaker at least quarterly, more often during the fall to spring season. We also try to have at least one or two evening social events during the year. We host the annual HOA Sponsored Veterans Day Dinner and Dance which is open to ALL Corte Bella residents, not just Veterans. Our members also put up and take down the HOA provided and maintained American flags on our five holiday periods.
The Corte Bella Vets mission is to foster camaraderie among Veterans of the United States and her Allies, to undertake charitable and other projects on a state and local level, to promote patriotism, and most importantly, to provide service to all Veterans and their families. To support the projects and service support portions of our mission, we have one major fund raising event each year, our Charity Golf Tournament (open to the public), held here at the Corte Bella Golf Club, in early February and usually one or two smaller events throughout the year, and we ask for voluntary donations. There are NO DUES! In our first two years, we have raised and donated over $64,000 to help Arizona Veterans and Veterans’ Families. You can learn more about our group on our website: www. cortebellavets.org. If you’d like to join our group, you can send us an email to cortebellavets@yahoo.com or simply come to one of our monthly meetings and we will add you to the roster! We hope to see you soon!

World of Friends Evie Hansen World of Friends (WOF), a Corte Bella social group, is open to all Corte Bella residents and renters who have lived, traveled, studied around the world or who would like to. It’s even more than that. Anyone interested in learning about the richness of multicultural backgrounds is welcome. The monthly gatherings include many varied celebrations, presentations, discussions and stories. A memorable celebration occurred when Christa Marpole became a United States citizen. Other WOF members recalled their citizenship test questions much to the challenge of those attending. Life-vocation presentations are fascinating. Randy Hansen kept the group spellbound describing his 40 years as an Alaska fishing boat owner and captain. Hearing stories and seeing souvenirs from Flynn Fullers’ 30 plus years working in the State Department food aid program amazed all of us.
Travel adventure stories are always welcome, especially when accompanied with beautiful images. Ray and Muriel Vallee’s African video images rivaled National Geographic footage. Merrill and Priscilla Ebert visited Cuba right after it was opened to U.S. travel. Merrill, a Fulbright scholar, shared insights into the current political climate. Food always brings the group together. Over the years, sushi, empanadas, peri peri, Korean ribs, lebkuchen, hum bow, potato onion pie, madeline, Dominican Republic flan and many other “old country” recipes or travel favorites were sampled. Who can come? Anyone. Please bring a finger food appetizer, a beverage and a month that you will host.. WOF gathers in homes on the first Monday of the month at 4:30. The February 13, 2017 gathering is at Roy & Virginia Dent’s home at 22812 N. Arrellaga Drive. Please RSVP to Virginia.dent.21@gmail.com.
Walk-About-Night The Corte Bella Stringers The annual Corte Bella “Walk-About-Night” was held on Friday, December 2nd. Hundreds of residents and guests enjoyed the spectacular display of Christmas decorations that adorn the local homes. Special thanks to Santa (Ed Kuba), his green helper elf (Steve Buda), and all the rest of his helpers and to the Corte Bella Chorus for making this a very special event. A big “THANK YOU” to all the residents and guests who walked our streets, enjoyed our decorations, and contributed to the “Red Kettle.” The Red Kettle represents the “reason for the season” and was stuffed with generous contributions. This is an easy opportunity for us to share our good fortune with those who are less fortunate. The crowd was very generous! This year the grand total in the Salvation Army Red Kettle was
>>>> $6,735! <<<<
This is over $2,000 more than last year! The Stringers say “Thank You - friends and neighbors.” The Stringers are pleased that we made our houses, our neighborhood and Corte Bella look great and - helped a lot of less fortunate people have a merrier Christmas. We all enjoy putting up the lights and yard decorations, but it really makes us feel good when the community supports the Salvation Army in this manner! Thank you again! As we prepare to end this year, we hope that you continue to enjoy our efforts thru New Year’s Day.
In the history of the Corte Bella Stringers, this year was our best. We thank all those residents and guests who drove or walked by to see our lights, put money in the Red Kettle and offered kind words to those who put up and take down the lights. We would also like everyone to know that we have more fun decorating then anyone realizes. We hope the joy with which we do this, is evident. These are the times of our lives and we love it!

Bobbie the Bobcat Alex McCullough Hi my name is Bobbie. I’m a bobcat. I, along with my two sisters and my Mother, have been hanging out in Corte Bella since I was born in early November. It is kinda funny that my Mom picked a fifty-five and over community to bring us into this world but here we are. My guess is we don’t count against the percentage of “people” under fifty-five allowed to live in the community.
We have been camping out on the roof of a house on North Hank Raymond. I am told the golf green below is the seventh hole. We certainly have not gone unnoticed. Word has gotten around that we are here. Many of the residents, walkers, golfers and gawkers are riding by and watching my sisters and I play on the roof. We are having lots of fun running around on the solar panels by day and actually sleeping under the panels at night. We find it pretty cozy for the three of us and our Mom. Mom is not here most of the time. Seems like she is really busy doing other things at all times of the day and night. She says a woman’s work is never done. Maybe she’s out looking for our father since we haven’t seen him. Wonder what that is all about? You might be wondering how we got up on the roof and why we are up here in the first place. It was easy to get up. Mom took us one by one in her mouth. All she needed to do was to jump from one level to another and here we are. It was an awesome ride. A couple of the nice benefits about being so high is that we don’t have to worry about being carried off by a mean coyote and Mom delivers us a nice dinner each day. It consists of the plentiful delicacies that co-exist within the walls of Corte Bella. I’m told by Mom not to question what I am eating, just enjoy it and above all else not to think the room service is going to be available for much longer. Gotta tell you about an adventure I had recently which, for me, was very scary. My sisters and I were running around on the roof playing while Mom was out doing what she was doing. Before she left, she told us to be careful while she was gone and not to get into any trouble. She suggested we watch the golfers on the green, trying futilely to put that little white ball in the hole. We did that… for awhile.
We were also having fun talking about the color combinations some of the golfers were wearing. Now that was pretty funny. Here we are trying not to be real visible and some of the golfers are dressed in such wild colors they couldn’t be missed. Mom said these so called “active adults” do some silly things. Mom also said we would hear some words coming from some of the golfers that should never be repeated. Getting back to my scary experience . . . we are running around on the roof having fun when all of a sudden I ended up in the courtyard below. I got too close to the edge and within a split second I was no longer in my safe haven. I was on the ground. Being alone on the ground at my age is not where I am supposed to be or want to be. I was immediately concerned about coyotes. I wasn’t expecting what I encountered next. It wasn’t a coyote. Within a matter of minutes after my paws hit the ground, I found myself surrounded by these “fifty five and over senior citizens.” I remember one of them in particular as one of those wildly dressed golfers. He was more scary up close. Thankfully, I was not hurt, so I scrambled up a nearby pillar and tried to hide under one of the planters in the courtyard. I soon realized that hiding hadn’t worked because they were taking

pictures of me. At least those who could figure out how to take pictures with their fancy phones. They were like paparazzi but moved a little slower. Those not taking photos were coming up with suggestions as to what was best for me. The ideas ranged from calling security, a vet, animal control, or the fire department. Another creative idea was to pick me up and somehow get me back on the roof. Sprinkled in with the ideas they were generating were reminders of the time of day and the necessity to resolve this situation before they missed the start of the Happy Hour prices at one of the local restaurants. I really didn’t know what they meant by Happy Hour but it was very obvious it was becoming more of a priority than my safety. Thankfully, common sense prevailed and it was decided to just leave me where I was and hope my Mom would appear and rescue me. I didn’t really know what was best for me but I knew two things were not in my best interest: me on the ground exposed to coyotes, and having my Mom come home, not finding me with my sisters on the roof and then finding me where I was. So I did what I thought was in my best interest. When all the well-intentioned residents encircling me vacated the premise, I jumped down from my perch and tried to find my way back up to the roof before Mom got home. I went around to the back of the house and started to look around. I found out quickly this was just not my day….I fell into the pool. I hated it. I was so frightened but I was able to somehow get out and immediately returned to my perch under the planter. My situation was growing worse by the moment. As the hours passed, every 10 minutes the people living in the house would look out their window to see if I was still there. Unfortunately I was, but now I was far more uncomfortable. It was getting dark, I was wet and I was hungry. My sisters were nowhere to be found, nor was my Mother. As I said previously my father has never been around so I didn’t expect him to appear anytime soon. Nighttime was setting in, the temperature was going down and I was alone. All I could think of was why didn’t I take my mother’s advice. Early the next morning the “way over fifty-five” man living in the house came out to see if I was still there. I was not. In fact, he realized by late morning we were all gone. The residents of the house and their immediate neighbors have been wondering why we left and where we went. They were happy in some ways that we moved on. But part of them miss having us running around on the roof and entertaining so many of the residents living in the beautiful and friendly confines of Corte Bella. I heard someone say it was not my Mom, my sisters and I that were trespassing, it was really the residents of Corte Bella. You can decide that for yourselves. I will tell you this, however, we are still in Corte Bella. Just like you, we love it here. Hey, I may not be grown up and very wise yet, but my attitude is “live and let live.” Hope you feel the same way.

Corte Bella Lights Up for Christmas Linda Wright It’s a Corte Bella tradition! It isn’t the Christmas season in Corte Bella until the community tree in the Anacapa restaurant is setup, decorated and then turned on during a community celebration complete with a choir concert and an appearance by Santa Claus. This year was no exception to the rule. On November 30th, Corte Bella residents gathered for a scrumptious buffet dinner prepared by the Anacapa team. During the dinner, the Corte Bella Choir (made up of talented and dedicated residents who have practiced all year for this event) performed and set the festive mood. Thank you to each member of the choir for your excellent program of Christmas classics.
The community tree was beautifully decorated along with the entire restaurant and the Social Hall. Resident volunteers accomplished this large undertaking with Pam Lawrence, Corte Bella’s Lifestyle Manager, and their efforts are appreciated by all residents. The lighting of the Christmas tree with Santa’s help was truly a magical moment. With this simple gesture, the most wonderful time of the year officially began!
Thank You Corte Bella For Your Tradition of Sharing Salvation Army Christmas Angel Tree 2016 Again, this year the residents and staff of Corte Bella have shown the true spirit of Christmas time – to share and care for others. This year, the Salvation Army Christmas Angel Tree in Corte Bella had 135 Angel tags with the names and wish lists from disadvantaged children in the West Valley. The response by our community was amazing and the gifts donated were provided a joyful Christmas celebration for many children and their families. Thank you for your generous and loving contributions to this
wonderful program. The Salvation Army Sun Cities West Valley Corps thanks you and salutes each of you for your kindness. As volunteer chairpersons, we thank you for making this an easy project and for making us proud to live in this great community.

At that time Cindy Buda, Linda Kroupa and Sannia Mollman discussed the idea of a line dance social club, thus, the CB Steppers social group was officially developed. They decided on a social club without dues to keep the club simple and fun. The CB Steppers started meeting twice a month in the Social Hall with instructors, Carmel and Hutch, leading to reinforce the dances learned. Today, the CB Steppers has grown from a few members to around 50 on the mailing list and approximately 20 active members. The club is still a “no dues” club and meets the first and third Tuesday of each month in the Movement Studio from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. The CB Steppers have their own website, www.cbsteppers.com. Check it out! In addition to country-western line dances we also do pop music line dancing, so there is a wide variety of music and dances. If you enjoy dancing, come join us or if you want to learn more about line dancing, classes are held in the Movement Studio and are taught by Carmel and Ernie (Hutch) Hutchinson. More information on the line dance classes can be found in the Corte Bella Times or the CB Steppers website at: www.cbsteppers.com. Come and join the fun!

If These Boulders Could Talk... Cynthia Goulet
“If these boulders could talk…” They would tell the story of the 19 courageous firefighters who made their last stand in the late afternoon hours of Sunday, June 30, 2013, in the bottom of a box canyon in the boulder fields near Yarnell. They would tell how these men circled together, inside a fire break they hurriedly made and deployed their shelters, as the roaring fire advanced on them, from the north, behind them, and from the south, in front of them, trapping them in the canyon. They would tell of the men’s last words sent on the winds which had shifted 180 degrees and doubled then The Hotshots crew tripled in gust speeds in an hour, forcing these firefighters to leave their work site area and move southerly over a ridge and down into the canyon bottom, attempting to reach a nearby ranch, a designated safety zone, where they would, it’s believed, reposition and re-engage in their fire fighting work. The temperature of the fire that roared through the canyon is estimated at over 2000 degrees; the vegetation was so dense, with up to 10 feet high chaparral trees, that it would have been impenetrable at points, and would have provided tremendous fuel for the fire. The last radio communication with Hotshot crew superintendent, Eric Marsh, was at 4:41 p.m. when he advised that the crew was preparing a deployment site. The bodies of these fallen heroes were found about two hours later by a paramedic who was dropped off by helicopter on the ridge, hiked down to the deployment site, and confirmed 19 fatalities. These were the fatalities of the lightening caused fire of June 2013, which began on June 28 as a one-half acre fire but in just a few days grew to over 8,400 acres, requiring the complete evacuation of Yarnell to the southeast and partial evacuation of Peeples Valley, to the northeast. These boulders do seem to talk to the hikers who traverse the 3.5 mile trail to the Granite Mountain Hotshots memorial site. The memorial is in Arizona’s newest state park which opened November 30 and is located about 60 miles northwest of Corte Bella. The trailhead is at 4,318 feet, and over 2.85 miles, it carves its way through Weaver Mountains, up to 5,460 feet to the observation deck, which overlooks the memorial located at the bottom of the narrow canyon. The trail is designed to offer hikers a sense of what wildland firefighters do in their line of work: trekking uphill (carrying 50 plus pounds of gear) along cuts in the mountain side, between and around boulders, and out onto the windy and open ridge. From the high point of the observation deck, the trail descends another 3/4th mile down to the canyon’s
bottom; the trail has tight switchbacks to make the final length able to accommodate hikers of almost any level. The memorial is the fatality site itself, where the bodies of the 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots were found. The site is encircled by 19 gabions, large rectangular rock filled cages, “one for each fallen brother.” The gabions are linked together by chains. “They remain together as the team with which they worked and made their last stand,” states a plaque at the memorial. Inside the circle of gabions are 19 iron crosses, each engraved with the name of the firefighter, and each set at the final resting place of each firefighter. There are benches set around the site; places for hikers to sit and reflect with a memorial flag waving over. The memorial is reverent in its simplicity; strong and somber in its starkness.
The fatality site gabions A Hotshot crew has 20 members. The lone survivor of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, Brendan McDonough, was serving as the “lookout” that day for his crew, which meant he was stationed at a site away from his crew. His position was compromised by the advancing fire sooner than that of the crew, and pursuant to protocol, his superintendent ordered him to re-locate to a safe zone. That order likely saved his life. On December 7, members and guests of the Corte Bella Adventure Group hiked this trail. Along the trail and bonded to large boulders are granite plaques, each engraved with a picture of one of the Hotshot firefighters and a brief, loving story of that man’s life: husbands, fathers, sons and boyfriends. The plaques are placed in order of rank of the crew members, beginning with Eric Marsh, superintendent; Jesse Steed, captain; Clayton Whitted, Robert Caldwell, Travis Carter, Travis Turbyfill, Christopher MacKenzie, Andrew Ashcraft, Joe Thurston, Wade Parker, Anthony Rose, Garret Zuppiger, Scott Norris, Dustin DeFord, William Warneke, Kevin Woyjeck, John Percin Jr., Grant McKee and Sean Misner. They ranged in age from 21 to 43; 14 of them were in their 20s. It’s recommended that hikers allow around five hours for the inand-out , 7 mile hike, allowing time to read the stories on each plaque and to pay respect at the memorial to these brave men who gave the ultimate sacrifice. It’s a hike that will stay with you, in your heart and mind, long after you leave the trail.

Heavens to Murgatroyd Poof, go the words of our youth, the words we’ve left behind. We blink and they’re gone. Where have all those phrases gone?
Hal Reed Would you recognize the word Murgatroyd? Heavens to Murgatroyd! Lost words from our childhood: Words gone as fast as the buggy whip! Sad really!
Long gone: Pshaw. The milkman did it. Hey! It’s your nickel. Don’t forget to pull the chain. Knee high to a grasshopper. Well, fiddlesticks! Going like sixty. I’ll see you in the funny papers. Don’t take any wooden nickels. Heavens to Murgatroyd!
The other day, a not so elderly (65) lady said something to her son about driving a jalopy and he looked at her quizzically and said what the heck is a jalopy? OMG (new phrase!) - He had never heard of the word jalopy!! She knew she was old but not that old. Well, I hope you are Hunky Dory after you read this and chuckle. These are some old expressions that have become obsolete because of the inexorable march of technology. These phrases included “Don’t touch that dial,” “Carbon copy,” “You sound like a broken record” and “Hung out to dry.”
It turns out there are more of these lost words and expressions than Carter has liver pills. This can be disturbing stuff! We of a certain age have been blessed to live in changing times. For a child each new word is like a shiny toy, a toy that has no age. We at the other end of the chronological arc have the advantage of remembering there are words that once did not exist and there were words that once strutted their hour upon the earthly stage and now are heard no more, except in our collective memory. It’s one of the greatest advantages of aging. See ya later, alligator!
Back in the olden days we had a lot of moxie. We’d put on our best bib and tucker to straighten up and fly right Heavens to Betsy! Geewhillikers! Jumping Jehoshaphat! Holy moley! We were “in like Flynn” and living the “life of Riley” and even a regular guy couldn’t accuse us of being a knucklehead, a nincompoop or a pill. Not for all “the tea in China!” Back in the olden days, life used to be swell, but when’s the last time anything was swell? Swell has gone the way of beehives, pageboys and the D. A, of spats, knickers, fedoras, poodle skirts, saddle shoes and pedal pushers. Oh, my aching back. Kilroy was here but he isn’t anymore.

Piaskowski Era of Tennis Leadership Concludes Jerry Tinsley With the resignation of Corte Bella Tennis Board President, Joel Piaskowski, which becomes official on January 26, 2017 at the Tennis Club annual meeting, the long reign of Piaskowski family members’ service to the Corte Bella tennis community closes. Never before in the ten-year history of the Corte Bella Tennis Board has either Joel or Jolene not held a position. Jolene is a past president, vice-president, social chairman and member at large. Joel served as social chairman before being unanimously elected and re-elected president of the tennis club for the past three years. Both plan to remain active members of the tennis community. Joel and Jolene moved to Corte Bella in July, 2005 after living in Omaha, Nebraska for 19 years. Jolene, who has played tennis since her high school days in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, immediately became involved in the tennis community. Joel, a natural athlete, previously played football, basketball and baseball, but only took up tennis at Corte Bella after attending tennis clinics and taking lessons in 2009 and 2010. He now plays three or four days weekly with various Corte Bella tennis groups.
Joel & Jolene with first place trophies at recent CBTC bowling event “It has been a real honor to serve as President of the Corte Bella Tennis Club for the last three years. The absolute best part of it was the members. All of the members of CBTC are awesome people in all regards. Whenever I called on them for a charity event, to fill in on court at the last minute, or anything to help the club, they were there for the club and the community. The laughs and great times we had at tournaments, social functions, and just playing the game we love, will forever be remembered. The game of tennis itself is much more than just a game. I cannot tell you the feeling being down 5-2 in a set, and then “climbing that mountain” to win the set. I would encourage all of you with grandchildren to get them exposed to the game. Life is like tennis. No matter how many times you try, if you keep making the same mistake, and don’t practice to get it right, you will never get better.”
Joel’s three years as President of the Tennis Club had the goal of “making tennis more visible and accessible in the Corte Bella and West Valley Community.” All would agree this goal has been accomplished. During these three years the club has sponsored various charity events to benefit Ronald McDonald House, Eve’s Place, and the Susan G. Komen Foundation among others. Joel initiated the inclusion of a tennis club article in every issue of the Corte Bella Times as well as the thoughtful gift of used tennis balls to “Helping Hands” and several animal rescue shelters. He coordinated the adoption of the Girls’ Tennis Team of Sandra Day O’Connor High School in 2014. During his tenure, the club also initiated new tennis events for Corte Bella including Wimbledon and Davis Cup internal tournaments with participant dinners and lunches; and the Board expanded social events to include bowling at Sun City West, Anacapa Happy Hours, Tennis Clinics, and seasonal events in members’ homes.
We thank Joel and Jolene for their past service to the Corte Bella tennis community and look forward to seeing them on the courts.
While Joel is known as a man of very few words, he may be most famous in the tennis community for narrating his spectacular slide shows at the annual meetings highlighting tennis events of each year. His parting statement to Tennis Club members is indicative of his concise use of the English language:

Pickleball Robin Mandell Current membership: 175! LIGHT UP THE NIGHT: We often talk about our member play times every Monday - Saturday morning. But our four permanent pickleball courts, and sometimes our four temporary courts as well, are also very busy in the evenings. During the winter months, play starts at 6:00 p.m. every Monday - Thursday evening under the lights. Players at every skill level are welcome; it is not necessary to be a member of the Pickleball Club to play. Club member (and tournament winner from last month’s story), Carolyn Pakan, reports: “During the summer we had about 8-10 players two nights a week - even when it was over 105 degrees. This time of year we usually fill all four courts, with people waiting. It is a very relaxed atmosphere, with a lot of laughing and talking. A lot of people come by to watch, and we try to get them to come on the courts and try the game. We are all willing and happy to teach newcomers. A number of the night players took the recent clinic with Diane [see below], and use the game time to practice the skills she taught. A bonus: they pass the info on to the rest of us! The other night, when it was quite chilly, Cheri and Jack Landers
brought apple cider and donut holes for treats. We have a lot of regulars that work during the day, so evening play works well for them. We’re looking forward to the return of the rest of the snowbirds!” Newcomer, Jodi Ptacek, adds: “All skill levels are welcome, including beginners. Corte Bella residents just show up and have a good time together.” CLINICS: We had another successful clinic for beginners in December. Additionally, Club Member and National Tournament Winner, Diane Baumgartner, held two special clinics, one for 3.0 level players, and another for 3.5/4.0 level players. What do those numbers mean? Depending on your abilities, you can get a rating based on your skills. Kind of like a handicap in golf. Tournaments generally place like-skill level people together for competition. UPCOMING EVENTS: January 21: Beginners’ Clinic January 25: Corte Bella Club Members Women’s Doubles Tournament January 27: Corte Bella Club Members Men’s Doubles Tournament January 30: Breakfast Pot Luck Social for Club Members See you out on the courts.
The Ryder Cup at Corte Bella Debbie Parks-Dube Wow, its 2017! I don’t know how that happened! I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday season. I certainly enjoyed my first holiday season working at Corte Bella Golf Club. It was so fun to see the festive golf carts and some of the amazingly decorated homes!
We kicked off our new hole-in-one program and had four holesin-one to celebrate at our November party which turned out to be a great time!
It has been incredibly busy around the club. Most of our members are back in town and playing a lot of golf. Our Ryder Cup was a great success with the first ever tie between the blue team and the red team! Both team pictures are hung in the locker room.
We had many new members join the golf club and they are fitting right in with our great membership! If you are new to the neighborhood and haven’t stopped by the club yet, please come on by. If you are not a golfer, you can enjoy our restaurant. We have many great lunch options and we are open for breakfast on the weekends. We also have a popcorn machine and plenty of your favorite beverages.
