ASSOCIATION

The Crew at the Corte Bella Times Did you know that the production of this periodical is a one hundred percent volunteer effort? Well it is. I continually hear what an outstanding product the Corte Bella Times has become. I am sure you will agree that it is a high quality product full of great visuals and interesting articles to say the least. It is Mike Arrington, Corte Bella Country Club Association, Inc. General Manager

obvious that all of the volunteers involved in production have some very professional skills and abilities. For instance, the photos that Mike Biggs and Jim Laskowicz have produced for years of Corte Bella scenes seem to get better each and every time. They seem to capture that which we notice but take for granted and they’re able to exhibit the true beauty within everything their eye catches. What a nice talent to have. Sharon Orlopp and Dave Johnson are co-editors for the CB Times and have done one tremendous job working together without a hitch from the word go. The two took over the leadership roles together a while back and from day one, it was like they had been doing it forever. Dave comes to Corte Bella from the newspaper business where he was very successful and Sharon’s expertise and energy is without equal. She is one of those who seems to be good at whatever she does. I cannot begin to tell you how important these two have been to the community and the CB Times. We are so fortunate to have such talented folks dedicated to this effort.

8 | CB Times | The Official Community Magazine of Corte Bella

Another thing that makes the CB Times so anticipated each month by our residents is that we get so many interesting life experience articles from residents related to vacations, humanitarian experiences, bucket list items they have crossed off the list and just otherwise great stories that we can all relate to about things we have dreamed of but never done. Isn’t the next best thing to doing something you really want to experience, seeing someone you know have that opportunity? I think sometimes we can live a part of our own lives vicariously through those we know and their own adventures and achievements. I can never wait to see the next edition to see what is in it. Linda Wright’s involvement has also been a huge part of the CB Times production and her dedication to the residents of Corte Bella is quickly making her one of Corte Bell’s most famous volunteers. Linda coordinates and provides so much information on a monthly basis in support of the magazine that it has become everyone’s coffee table quick reference source for dates, times and what is happening in Corte Bella. You can literally pick up the CB Times and find out whatever you need to know more often than not. The bottom line is that Corte Bella is extremely fortunate to have such a wonderful source of information and entertainment due to the sacrifice, commitment and effort of so many very talented and generous volunteers. There are too many to mention all of them by name. I for one acknowledge the tremendous value to our community and thank all of the folks involved in producing the CB Times for all they do and how they do it. The CB Times is something to be very proud of.

March Board Talk By the time you see this message; our elections will be taking place at the 2017 Annual Membership Meeting on Thursday, March 2, 2017. The residents submitting interest forms are: Gary Ellwanger, David Ornstein, Donna Norton and Robert Rosenberg. Please vote! Michael McVeigh, President, Board of Directors As we prepare for a new team of Corte Bella Directors for the coming year, I thought long and hard about an appropriate message to send to the residents this month. The only thing I could come up with was a huge “Thank You!” to a Director that will be leaving us after faithfully serving this community since 2006. Walter Kearns has been an active part of just about everything that involves legal guidelines, regulations, charters, resolutions, governance, or finance. Way back in 2006, he started researching documents from over 20 Arizona communities and Homeowners Associations similar to Corte Bella to identify possible changes or conflicts to our Residential Design Guidelines, CC&R’s and Bylaws. He developed potential changes and prepared recommendations to the Board of Directors highlighting comments and proposed changes that were sorely needed. He led town hall meetings regarding all proposed changes and prepared documents for Board approval.

Walter Kearns has been an active part of just about everything that involves legal guidelines, regulations, charters, resolutions, governance, or finance.

Walt was a member of the Finance Committee in 2010. He then ran for a Board position in 2011 and was elected to his first twoyear term. He was elected Treasurer and served in that position until 2014. He then unselfishly recommended we approve an Assistant Treasurer position so a mutually agreeable transition could begin with proper training and mentoring. While serving as Treasurer, he developed, obtained Board approval and published a written governance policy. His guidance on budget preparation, audits, and the use of reserve funds including investment strategy is a principal reason our community is on sound financial standing both here in Corte Bella and throughout the state. He also researched IRS rulings and brought the Association into compliance.

Our current Treasurer, Donna Norton, recently stated: “Walt is able to quote the CC&R’s by page, paragraph, and line while providing the logic of why it was written. Believing people wanted to understand their HOA documents, he would expound on the CC&R’s while some folks headed to the exits and others gave up on discussing an item further.” Anyone who has ever attended a Board meeting or workshop knows that his research, knowledge and understanding of the issues were clearly manifested in his discussion. At a recent First Service Residential training for Board members throughout the region, one of the instructors when questioned by Walt about content responded to him, “You should be teaching all Board members throughout AZ about policy and HOA procedures.” Walt has been a mentor to me personally and I hope I’m a better Board member because of his patience and leadership skills. He has served Corte Bella on the Board of Directors for 6 years and we hope he does not stray too far from the community action. I move that Walt Kearns moves into full retirement and enjoys cruising with his wife Lynn. I’m sure everyone will agree. Thanks again Walt for your outstanding community service! Your thoughts, opinions, and concerns are very important to me as your Board President. Contact me anytime at mmcveigh3@cox.net or 623-433-9921.

Golf Cart Safety Robin Mandell It was observed over recent holiday vacations that kids, meaning anyone under the age of 18, were at the wheel of golf carts around the Corte Bella neighborhood. That is not advised. I have been a volunteer instructor of the AARP Safe Driver course for 9 years - it is one of my retirement projects. What I have learned while teaching this course: • •

Golf carts are licensed motor vehicles; they require a licensed driver at the wheel Golf carts can be on roads that have a speed limit of 35 MPH or below (i.e. within Corte Bella and Sun City West).

I have heard many stories over my years in AARP classes about individuals in local 55+ communities (Sun City, Sun City Grand) that have had devastating experiences with young people driving golf carts: if there is an accident/crash, insurance will not cover the damages because under-age drivers are not covered. Sometimes it is a great expense. Guess who pays for the damages - the grandparents. Golf carts are not a toy or an amusement car ride. PLEASE do not have your unlicensed grandkids/relatives drive around the community during the upcoming spring break -- or any time!

o They are forbidden on roads with a speed limit of 40 MPH or above (Deer Valley Road, Bell Road, Grand Ave.).

COMMUNITY

Corte Bella’s Super Bowl 51 Party Linda Wright More than 90 Corte Bella residents enjoyed watching the biggest football game of the year on two big screens in the Santa Barbara room on Sunday, February 5th. The decorations and table favors helped everyone get into the spirit. The football pool was enjoyed by many and some lucky folks left with extra dollars in their pocket. Many others were lucky by answering sport trivia questions and some with their winning raffle tickets.

Rooting for the winning team

All the attendees lucked out with a delicious buffet of football game foods like hot dogs, nachos, sliders and the fixings all prepared by Chef Dan and the Anacapa staff. Busy waiters kept everyone supplied with their favorite beverages. There were even two delicious cakes decorated with the colors of the two competing football teams. Everyone who attended was very happy with this event, even those whose team ended up on the losing side.

BJ and Paul Knowles at the Super Bowl Party Marion and Ike Ikenberry

Many thanks to our Lifestyle Manager, Pam Lawrence, and her team of volunteers who organized the event - Jeff and Pam Albin, Jim and Sandi Irving, and Michael McVeigh. Thanks also to HOA General Manager, Mike Arrington, for his awesome job as the Master of Ceremonies. Once again, Corte Bella scores when it comes to helping its residents party around this American sporting extravaganza.

COMMUNITY

CB Vets and Honor Flights David Beams The January 10th meeting of the Corte Bella Vets was highlighted by a presentation by Mrs. Susan Howe, the founder of Honor Flight AZ in 2008. Most flights carry about 30 WW II veterans, each accompanied by a “guardian” who is often a son, daughter or other close relative. A 2-person medical team also accompanies each flight. To date, Honor Flight AZ has sponsored 61 flights; about 8-10 times per year.

to and from the airport gates, the veterans receive standing ovations, and autograph and photo requests.

Honor Flight was founded in 2005 by a Springfield, Ohio physician’s assistant. One of his patients, a WW II veteran, told him that he was unable to visit the newly opened WW II Memorial in Washington, DC due to his financial situation. Mr. Earl Morse, the PA, was a pilot, and he and some of his pilot friends decided to fly WW II veterans to DC to see their memorial. Honor Flight was thus established.

Each veteran’s expenses are paid by Honor Flight AZ, a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization, so all donations are tax deductible. Honor Flight AZ has no paid staff; all funds pay for the veterans’ trips. Donations come from family members, churches, veterans organizations, school children, corporations and politicians. There is no federal or state funding. The Corte Bella Vets have set aside funds for Honor Flight AZ, which is now beginning to take Korean War veterans.

Honor Flight now has 135 hubs, and to date, about 100,000 WW II veterans have been taken to Washington, DC to visit the WW II Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, the Vietnam Memorial, the Iwo Jima Memorial, the Navy Memorial, the Air Force Memorial, the changing of the guard at Arlington National Cemetery, Capitol Hill and Fort McHenry. At each memorial, and when walking

On the return flight to Phoenix, there is a “mail call” much to the surprise of the veterans. Families, friends, school kids and strangers write letters to the vets to let them know how much they are appreciated. Each veteran’s name is called and he/she is given a package of mail.

The mission of the Corte Bella Vets is “To foster camaraderie among Veterans of the United States and her Allies, to undertake charitable and other projects on a state and local level, to promote patriotism, and most importantly, to provide service to all Veterans and their families.”

Corte Bella Vets Expands Membership As we head into the New Year, the Corte Bella Vets want to invite ALL Corte Bella residents to join our group! Initially, we limited membership to full or part time residents who served honorably in any component (Active, National Guard, or Reserve) of our Nation’s Armed Forces and anyone who served honorably in the Armed Forces of our Nation’s Allies. We know there are many fellow residents who are not Veterans but firmly and wholeheartedly Support Our Troops and our Veterans and Veterans’ families. We want to offer you the opportunity to join our group. We meet on the first Tuesday of every month from 8:30 – 10:30 in the Social Hall. We generally have a guest speaker at least quarterly, more often during the fall to spring season. We also try to have at least one or two evening social events during the year. We host the annual HOA Sponsored Veterans Day Dinner and Dance which is open to ALL Corte Bella residents, not just Veterans. Our members also put up and take down the HOA provided and maintained American flags on our five holiday periods.

The Corte Bella Vets mission is to foster camaraderie among Veterans of the United States and her Allies, to undertake charitable and other projects on a state and local level, to promote patriotism, and most importantly, to provide service to all Veterans and their families. To support the projects and service support portions of our mission, we have one major fund raising event each year, our Charity Golf Tournament (open to the public), held here at the Corte Bella Golf Club, in early February and usually one or two smaller events throughout the year, and we ask for voluntary donations. There are NO DUES! In our first two years, we have raised and donated over $64,000 to help Arizona Veterans and Veterans’ Families. You can learn more about our group on our website: www. cortebellavets.org. If you’d like to join our group, you can send us an email to cortebellavets@yahoo.com or simply come to one of our monthly meetings and we will add you to the roster! We hope to see you soon!

Pet Paradise and Protocol Buddy and Molly Hi, our names are Buddy and Molly. We are brother and sister cock-a-poos. As you can see from our picture, we are like any other siblings. We use one of our favorite toys to delineate the space on our nice, comfy bed. We taunt each other and dare each other to cross over the line on the bed, but it’s all in good fun. We love it here in Corte Bella! When we walk the “loop” we get to say hello to many other dogs. We notice that there are several sets of twin dogs, or two at a time, as well as only-child dogs. When we say hello to other dogs, we are not shy about going straight for the private areas---that’s one of the perks about being a dog! We immediately get to intimate business without the small talk. Compared to where we used to live, our owners are very focused on picking up any gifts or droppings that we leave. There is something about walking in fresh air that releases the need to do our business. Fortunately, there are many spots in Corte Bella where those gifts can be deposited in garbage cans and new green gift bags are available for free. Every now and then we run into a pile of gifts that haven’t been picked up. This is yucky for both pets and owners, so please bark at your owner and insist that they pick up the gift you have left on the ground. One other disgusting thing we have seen while walking in the neighborhood during the holidays are pets who treat holiday decorations and lights as their personal urinals. Gross! We all love the incredible displays of holiday cheer, so let’s find rocks, grass or bushes rather than holiday lights and yard décor for raising our legs or squatting. Now onto the subject of barking. We apologize because we have not fully learned our dog etiquette but we are working on it. We love confusing our owners by barking sometimes but not all the time. We have seen very well behaved dogs and we know they are setting the gold standard for the rest of us to achieve.

Buddy and Molly with their dog toy. Don’t come on my side of the bed!

Let me tell you what I love to do to get my neighbor’s dog in trouble. Late in the afternoon, I sneak to the side of our patio and yelp one small bark at our neighbor’s dog. This sets him off and he starts barking like crazy. His owner comes out and reprimands him. He falls for this trick every afternoon and it is great fun for me! We are impressed with dogs being kept on their leash. We have not seen any dogs running free in common areas or on the golf course. There are dog-looking types of animals that like to roam the golf course frequently but we don’t believe they have any owners. What we love best at Corte Bella is Yappy Hour at the Lanai at 4:00 every day. Wow is that fun! There are many other dogs to play with and lots of laps to sit on while being petted. Corte Bella is paradise for pets---we hope to keep it that way by always being respectful of common areas and other people’s property.

Anacapa’s Chef Dan Presents High Tea Delights Linda Wright On Friday, February 3rd Corte Bella’s talented Chef Dan Haywood provided a wonderful afternoon for 41 ladies during his “For Ladies Only” cooking class that demonstrated culinary delights for high tea. During this entertaining and instructive class, Chef Dan created meltin-your-mouth cranberry scones, freshly prepared lemon curd, cucumber and watercress tea sandwiches, curry chicken open faced tea sandwiches, and smoked salmon with herbed butter tea sandwiches. Recipes for everything prepared were provided for each woman in attendance.

Note to Corte Bella residents: There is some interest in presenting an afternoon high tea at the Anacapa – possibly once a month. If this is something you might be interested in and would possibly attend, please email Pam Lawrence, Lifestyle Manager, at plawrence@cortebellacca.com or call Pam at 623-328-5319, extension 224. Thank you!

Chef Dan introduced his special guest chef – his brother Alan Haywood, a talented pastry chef. Alan demonstrated how to make light and flavorful Madeleine cookies and chocolate dipped strawberries. Alan then impressed the ladies by showing how to craft chocolate covered tuxedo strawberries. During the class, the ladies sipped a variety of teas and sampled all the featured recipes while seated at lovely, white linen tables and served by the incredibly attentive staff from the Anacapa. To say this was an enjoyable afternoon for these Corte Bella ladies is an understatement. Hats off to Chef Dan for a superb job and to his brother Alan as well.

Cruising the Caribbean Sharon Orlopp Many of you are familiar with the river cruises offered by Viking; they also offer ocean cruises, including one to the Caribbean called The West Indies Explorer. Their newest ship, Viking Star, is used for this paradise destination with port stops in St. Thomas, St. Kitts, St. Martin, St. John’s, Guadeloupe, St. Lucia, Barbados, Tortola, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. My husband, Craig, and I recently returned from our amazing, sun-kissed adventure of gleaming azure waters, idyllic beaches, dramatic scenery, breathtaking vistas, and vibrant tropical culture. Port excursions included catamaran rides with grilled lobster lunches, four-hour whale watching expeditions, snorkeling with sea turtles at a shipwreck, hiking to breathtaking waterfalls,

regatta racing, and sampling a local cocktail called the Painkiller. One of the most picturesque stops was in Guadeloupe at the Morne a L’eau cemetery. The majority of the gravesites and mausoleums have black and white tiles in a checkerboard pattern. The cemetery is laid out in the shape of an amphitheater and it hosts events on All Saint’s Day and during the local Crab Festival. These islands have rich histories and lore. Governance of each island is currently either British, French, Dutch, or American. St. Martin has been shared by France and Holland since 1648. Antigua and neighboring Barbuda, along with several other smaller islands actually comprise an independent country. If you have travel stories and photos that you would like to share with Corte Bella residents by placing them in the CB Times, please contact Sharon Orlopp at sorlopp@aol.com or at 479-531-0948.

PORA is a Sun City West community association that offers adult learning classes to residents and non-residents. Corte Bella, (CB) HOA pays the household membership of $20.00, each year and CB owners and renters only pay for the individual class or activity. Over 182 classes are offered and many are free. Art, music, finance, business, law, science, religion, technology, health, wellness, history, home, and garden are just some of the many and varied classes. They are taught by experts from around the world and will inspire you to continue learning.

After living in CB for 4 years I have found the “Sun City West dosen’t like us” mantra is not true. They do like us and there are lots of things going on there we can participate in. For instance every Thursday, all year long is film night at Kuentz Stardust theater. For $2.00 per person, documentaries, current, oldies, musicals, etc are shown. TIP: Doors open at 6:00 and for best seller movies like Sully you will want to get there early. Tap into the activities at Beardsley Park. Outdoor movies and concerts are scheduled in March and October along with

Several highly respected CB residents teach there too. Julie Rae, L.Ac teaches and demonstrates the benefits to wellness through acupuncture. You will need to register early for her classes titled “The Medicine Cabinet in Your Kitchen” and “Introduction to Essential Oils” because they are always full. There will be no need to beg the grandkids for computer help after you enroll in classes taught by Virginia Ellwanger. When you take a basic Android phone and tablet class her amazing teaching skills will increase your understanding of computers and the applications available for everyday use. CB residents have long reaching influence. I participated in a three-part, thought provoking class that referenced and recommended Dr. Charles Dyer’s book titled “ The ISIS Crisis.” Author Dyer, a CB resident, generously provided discounted books for class participants.

Libraries, Libraries, Libraries in our area are outstanding and offer more than just books. Did you know there is a culture pass available with your current library card that gives you free general admission access to over 15 venues in the greater Phoenix area? The grand kids will love the Challenger Space Center and the Arizona Science Center. If you haven’t visited and taken free classes at the White Tank Mountain library you are missing an amazing experience. Julie Rae, a licensed acupuncturist, and a CB resident teaches to a full house of over 90 class participates on subjects like Acupuncture and Your Medicine Cabinet in your Kitchen. Those activities and more at announced on the White Tanks site at mcldaz.org. Be sure and stop by the Glendale library. It has a beautiful xeroscape next to the library where you can walk and view water saving landscapes.

Questions Commonly Asked of the Aesthetician Kathi Dahl, Licensed Aesthetician

How can I get rid of brown sun spots? Genetically, some people struggle with acne, some with extreme sensitivity, some with severe dryness and yet others with pigmentation. There is no magic wand for getting rid of pigmentation. Here are some things to know:

Inflammatory Factors: 1. Sun Exposure: The sun triggers the production of melanin. Living in Arizona, we must be extra careful to always wear sunblock and to reapply often. 2. Heat: Heat triggers inflammation and inflammation sets off a response to release melanin activity. Along with sunblock, a hat and sunglasses are a good practice anytime.

Hormonal Factors Aging/Hormone Chargers/Peri-Menopause/Menopause: It is very common for pigmentation to occur in the early 40’s and up. It is due to hormonal changes combined with age. Since Corte Bella is an active retirement community, I did not mention pregnancy or birth control pills.

What you can do With all the above, the main goals with the skin are to: • Exfoliate to break up and remove pigmented cells • Use a skin lightener to fade and suppress the melanin cells • Get a whiting facial Practice patience, it’s not going to disappear overnight. And remember, the longer the pigmentation is there, the longer it will take to fade. So start sooner rather than later! At the Corte Bella Day Spa, the Phytomer Facial Products are used. Call the Spa Front Desk at (623) 217-2018 today and book your facial.

3. Overuse of chemical peels, microdermabrasion, facial scrubs or Retin-A: This is called post-inflammatory hyper pigmentation. Skin can become inflamed, maybe not visible to the naked eye, and result in pigmentation. With pigmentation, the less aggressive you are, the less pigmentation you will have.

Saturday April 22 * Depart Corte Bella

4. Excessive picking can cause injury to the skin. Also postinflammatory hyper pigmentation, the damage from picking and poking, can cause pigmentation. Oftentimes, it may not appear until years later.

Corte Bella Adventure Group Steve Downing The Corte Bella Adventure Group visited the Ben Avery Clay Target Center in January, testing our skills at hitting those fast flying clays. The course called Sporting Clays is often called “golf with a shotgun.” Ben Avery indicates this is a fun and rapidly growing sport. There are 15 stations you can move to, each presenting a different direction launch---most in the air and some rolling along the ground. Some stations launched from elevated platforms created by scissor-lift stands. The Quail Course has six stations for beginners, the Rattlesnake Course has fifteen stations for intermediate shooters and the Roadrunner Course is for master level shooters. While we were far from the Master level, we did occasionally hit a clay. For myself, I attribute the hit more to luck than any type of skill. Maybe a few lessons would be called for from one of those Masters. One of our hikes was a group favorite at South Mountain. The hike climbs Mormon Trail to National Trail where we found Hidden Valley and ventured through Fat Man’s Pass. Fat Man’s Pass is a slit through what was once solid rock. This is not a place for those who have claustrophobia because there is a confined space with the sides of the crack pressing on your chest and back as you squeeze through. Fortunately, there is a way to climb up and over

Left to Right, Read Smith, Rich Ingram, Rich Lowe if you have fear of getting stuck. For being a short hike of only 3.8 miles, there are nice rock formations and even what looks like a tunnel to navigate back to National Trail and down the mountain. With the winter rains, I am expecting a gorgeous Spring desert with colorful wild flowers and cactus blooms amid a backdrop of a rich green desert grass. This should be a treat for those who have not yet explored a Spring Desert after a wet winter. Sharon Orlopp in Fat Man’s Pass

Corte Bella Adventure Group: Biking Apache Wash Rich Ingram The Corte Bella Adventure Group members enjoy hiking on Tuesdays and biking on Thursdays. This article focuses on biking. We welcome all levels and types of bikers and bikes. We have members who ride fairly fast and others who travel at a much more leisurely pace. We arrange our rides so that all can participate. All rides are “No Drop” rides meaning we leave no one behind. The members are always ready to help anyone with a bike problem and several have the appropriate tools to fix flats or other minor problems. Bike helmets are required. The group meets in the Corte Bella parking lot near the Rec Center and carpools to the event location. Don’t worry if you don’t have a bike rack - many of the members have racks that can accommodate more than one bike. One very popular ride is at Apache Wash. On our last ride we had some riders who traveled about 25 miles at 15 - 19 MPH. Other bikers enjoyed a casual ride of around 10 miles at a pace of 10 14 MPH. Two members went mountain biking. Others struck out on their own and traveled at their own pace and distance.

The club also has a social aspect. For those interested, we often either have lunch or at least drinks after the ride. Contact Rich Ingram at illini240@gmail.com or preferably please join us by going to https://www.meetup.com/Corte-Bella-Adventurers/.

Driver Safety Course Robin Mandell

Presented by AARP

Cost: $15 for AARP members $20 for nonmembers When was the last time you took a driver’s refresher course? If you can’t recall, it’s probably time! Driving is definitely not what it used to be; with the ever-changing road conditions, traffic laws and car technology, it might seem a bit challenging. This is why it’s important to keep your driving skills up to date in order to be safe on the road. AARP is offering a driver course designed for mature adults to refresh their driving skills, road knowledge and safety precautions. We invite you to take advantage of the Smart Driver course to brush-up on your driving skills. By taking a driver safety course you’ll learn the current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques, and how to operate your vehicle more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment.

In addition, you’ll learn: •

How to maintain a proper following distance

The safest way to change lanes and make turns at intersections

The effects of medications on driving

Reducing driver distractions such as eating, smoking, and cell phone use

Proper use of safety belts, air bags, antilock brakes, and new technology found in cars today

After completing the course, you will have a greater appreciation of driving challenges and a better understanding of how to avoid potential collisions and injuring yourself or others. You may be eligible to receive an insurance discount, valid for 3 years, upon completing the course, so consult your insurance agent for details. AARP membership is not required to take the course, and there are no tests to pass.

Wednesday, April 19, 2017

8:30 am — 12:30 pm Bella Stanza Room Registration Available Sunday March 5th at 2:00 PM in the Movement Room. Bring with you to the class a check made payable to AARP, your driver’s license, and your AARP membership card. Register in the Corte Bella Fitness Center - class size is limited to 40.
