ASSOCIATION

Summer Preparations Corte Bella’s busiest time of year is coming to an end as we enter the summer months. About 40 percent of the Corte Bella population will be moving on for the summer to cooler temperatures elsewhere. Mike Arrington, Corte Bella Country Club Association, Inc. General Manager For those of you who do leave our community to travel and escape the heat, here are a few tips; First, let management know how to reach you in case there is an emergency related to your property. You can do this by contacting the HOA office and providing the phone number and address where you may be reached. Our HOA office attempts to contact residents during the summer for emergencies but of course, this only produces positive results if we have a good contact number. You will not receive any correspondence from the HOA, including quarterly assessment invoices unless you provide management with the address of where you will be. The postal service will not forward bulk mail even if you have filed a forwarding address with them. You must contact the HOA to receive your mail from the association or management company.

8 | CB Times | The Official Community Magazine of Corte Bella

You may consider asking a neighbor or friend to keep an eye on your property while you are gone. This can come in handy if you were to have an irrigation leak or other property issues while you are gone such as bees building a hive on your lot, etc. Water leaks can get expensive if not attended to and the bees have made a comeback from several years ago. We are already removing many hives from our community. Another important consideration should be to protect your property by locking up tight and making sure that your property is well lit at night. Use timers or photo cells for this. Your property does not have to be excessively lit but it should simply look as though you are home. Although Corte Bella is the most secure community in the area, if someone is up to no good, they will always choose the darkest lot or the one that looks like no one is at home. Lighting is the best deterrent to undesirable activity on your lot while you are away. Also, make sure all your doors and entries are locked up and secure. Don’t take any chances. Lastly, it is the responsibility of each owner to ensure that their lot is maintained and in compliance with the association rules including weeds, trimming of trees and plants, etc. throughout any period of absence. I hope that these tips help you enjoy your time away more and I look forward to seeing you again in the fall. As for those residents that enjoy Corte Bella year-round, stay hydrated, make sure your pets are hydrated, don’t get too much sun and enjoy the summer months with me and the rest of the Corte Bella team at your service.

The 2017 Corte Bella Volunteer Appreciation Night was held on Sunday night April 9th. The evening’s theme “YOU ARE A PIECE OF THE PUZZLE” is one that is consistent with my personal philosophy of TEAMWORK. I know it also reflects the

Left to right: Bob Rosenberg, Donna Norton, Michael McVeigh, Paul Knowles, Daniel Luparello, David Ornstein, and Gary Ellwanger Board’s philosophy. Our challenge here in Corte Bella is also ensuring Customer Service and Quality both take place in all we do. The ultimate measurement will be resident satisfaction. I had an opportunity to share a few stories about achieving a service performance of 99.9 percent as we serve the community. Excellent service starts with people and the people that are our volunteers here in Corte Bella are the ones that make it happen by working together and also working with our First Service Residential partners. Our volunteers are special people that take pride in their work, feel good about what they are doing and work well with others as a team. What a great puzzle! Thank you for the confidence and trust you have placed in all of us. We will do everything possible to assure that it is well placed. Enjoy the summer and if you are leaving us until the fall, travel safe. Our next Board workshop will be held on Friday, 5/19 at 9:00 a.m. and the next regular Board meeting, Wednesday, 5/25 at 6:00 p.m. Your thoughts, opinions, and concerns are very important to me as your Board President. Chicken Mole with Spanish Rice The most famous of Oaxaca’s many moles, this sauce can be served with turkey, chicken, or pork; however, turkey is the meat of choice for festive occasions. In Mexico, the ingredients for large batches of mole are usually taken to a molino - mill to eliminate the laborious process of grinding on the metate. The following recipe is quite manageable using a blender Executive Chef Dan Haywood, or food processor. Making the mole sauce at least a day ahead is Anacapa Restaurant recommended to give the flavors time to meld.

Method:

Mole : •

1/4 lb. mulato chiles, seeded and deveined

1/4 lb. pasilla chiles, seeded and deveined

1 tsp cumin seeds

2-3 cups hot chicken broth

1 whole head garlic, unpeeled

1/2 cup sesame seeds

6 cloves garlic, chopped

1 French roll, rough chopped

2 corn tortillas

1 cup lard or corn oil

3 ounces each almonds and shelled walnuts or peanuts

1/4 cup raisins

4” stick cinnamon

3 whole cloves, or 1/8 tsp ground

6 whole allspice, or ¼ tsp ground

1 sprig each marjoram, thyme and oregano or 1/4 teaspoon of each dried

2 medium white onions, chopped

1/4 lb. tomatillos husked

1/2 lb. red tomatoes

2 tablets Mexican chocolate (4 ounces)

salt and sugar to taste

1. Toast the chiles and cumin until they are fragrant but not burned. 2. Soak them in the broth for 20 minutes. Place chiles with enough soaking liquid to cover in a blender or food processor and purée. Should make a smooth paste. Add more liquid if necessary. Set aside. 3. In a sauté pan, toast the sesame seeds, garlic, bread roll, and tortillas until browned. Set aside. 4. Fry the almonds, nuts, raisins, cinnamon, allspice, herbs and onions in lard or corn oil until the onions begin to soften. Set aside. 5. Roast the tomatillos and tomatoes on the grill or in the oven for about 10-20 minutes until slightly roasted on the outside.

16 | CB Times | The Official Community Magazine of Corte Bella

6. Place them in the blender or food processor with the toasted ingredients and the fried ingredients and purée until smooth, adding enough broth to allow the blades to move. This may require blending or processing in two batches. 7. Heat 3/4 cups lard or corn oil in a large, heavy-bottomed stockpot or cazuela. 8. Add all the blended ingredients and cook over low heat for 45 minutes. 9. Add the chile purée and continue cooking for another hour. 10. Add the chocolate, cooking and stirring until it has melted. 11. Add salt and sugar to taste.

Chicken Mole with Spanish Rice (continued) Chicken: •

4 chicken breasts or a whole chicken cut up

1 Tbsp oil

Salt and pepper

½ cup chicken stock

2 cups mole sauce

1 cup warm Spanish rice

Sauté chicken pieces on both sides for 3-4 minutes. Add chicken stock and mole sauce and simmer for an additional 3-5 minutes until chicken is tender. If using a cut up chicken, extend this cooking time

Spanish Rice:

1 teaspoon cumin powder

1 tsp chili powder

1 tablespoon corn oil

Salt to taste

1 cup uncooked rice

Method:

2 cloves garlic, minced

2 cups cold water

½ onion

1 tablespoon chicken bouillon

1/2 cup tomato sauce

Roma tomato, chopped

for an additional 25 - 30 minutes. Arrange chicken on four plates. Ladle sauce over the chicken and garnish with sesame seeds and some cilantro. Scoop 4 oz. rice on the plate and serve with warm flour tortillas.

Cover, with a small air escape, and turn the heat down to medium low. 3. Cook the rice for 20 to 30 minutes but check after 20 minutes to see if it is ready.

1. Put the oil into a medium saucepan and heat to a medium temperature. Add the rice and brown it in the oil while stirring.

4. You do not need to stir the rice or lift the lid while it cooks. It is ready when the rice is fluffy, all the water is gone, and the grains are split open (because of the browning).

2. Add the garlic when the rice is nearly browned. Add the water, then the rest of the ingredients. Mix well.

5. If it is still sauce-like rather than dry, cook a few minutes more. Adjust the spices and serve hot as a side dish.

COMMITTEE

Picking Paint Colors: From Your Architectural Review Committee (ARC) Dorothy Greening and Linda Leonard This is the third in a series of articles designed to help homeowners better understand and work with the Design Guidelines and to assist in a smooth transition from design ideas to project completion. As we have noted in the other articles, all exterior projects need to be submitted for approval by the committee before commencing work. In this article, we will discuss house painting and available color schemes. If you choose to repaint your house exactly as it is currently painted, you may do so without submitting to the ARC. However, if you want to avail yourself of one of the other many color schemes that exist here, you will need to submit for approval. We currently have 20 different paint schemes available for use. The only restrictions on their use is that you stay within a scheme-which consists of 4 colors (body, trim, trim option/alternate, and accent)--apply them where they are allowed, and not use the same color scheme as your immediate neighbors. Deciding which scheme to use may be harder than finding out what they are. Just a bit of history, Pulte originally had only 10 paint schemes, which was increased to 14 several years ago. All of these schemes were derived from Frazee paint colors. Last year six additional schemes were added which were derived from Sherwin Williams paint colors. This change was necessary because Frazee Paint was purchased by Sherwin Williams and became part of that company. All of the paint schemes are still available at Sherwin Williams stores, Dunn Edwards stores, and possibly at other paint outlets in the area.

older Frazee colors. You should be able to look at that information any time you are at the stores in Surprise. However, this same information as well as actual paint chips are available for viewing at the HOA office. While the information needed to recreate the Frazee colors and the paint chips cannot be removed from the HOA office, color copies of all the schemes are available to any homeowner who asks for one. These documents also show where each color in a scheme may be applied. Before you visit a paint store, stop by the HOA office and pick up a color copy of the paint schemes so that you are well acquainted with your options.

At Sherwin Williams there is a book available that calls out all of the Corte Bella schemes and the information needed to create the

If you encounter any difficulty or have questions, the HOA staff and any ARC member are available resources to you.

Springtime in Corte Bella Linda Wright Springtime in the Valley of the Sun begins in late January or early February when we start to see the sun dawning a little earlier each day. Our flowering bushes and plants start to bud and bring vibrant color to our gardens. The abundant rains of this past winter have created a wonderland of wild flowers around the valley and have contributed to the beauty of Corte Bella. Our resident photographer, Mike Biggs, found some gorgeous Corte Bella gardens and captured the fleeting beauty that represents Spring in Corte Bella. Mike’s fellow CB Times photographer, Jim Laskowicz, helped design the photo collage on the facing page. There are distinct seasons in the Sonoran Desert punctuated with the changing of the floral landscape. Enjoy this collection of Spring beauty photos and look for the lessons of Mother Nature – there is life and beauty everywhere.

Bowers of Flowers Robin Mandell In 1924, Al Jolson penned the song “California, Here I Come.” During a recent trip to the Golden State, the lyrics “bowers of flowers bloom in the spring” kept leaping to mind. This year there has been record rainfall in California. They needed it. The whole state has been in a serious drought for many years. The torrential rainfall did bring some flooding and landslides, but mainly it brought gorgeous green hills, blossoming trees, and blooming flowers. Beautiful. It is difficult to leave Arizona during the month of March. We have the best weather in the country. Baseball spring training is on. Grandkids and friends come visit for spring break. The golf course beckons. But consider driving over to our neighboring state for the glorious spring colors whenever they are blessed with the winter rains. One spring activity we have enjoyed several times: barrel tasting in Sonoma County wine country. The first and second weekends of each March, hundreds of wineries open and let you taste young wines direct from the barrel. They will be bottled soon, and you can buy “futures,” cases of wine at a discounted price. You pay one price for the weekend event, get an armband and a glass, and wind your way around wineries big and small in the Chalk Hill, Dry Creek, Russian River, and Alexander Valley appellations. It is

really fun to visit well-known spots (Chalk Hill, La Crema, Ridge, Rodney Strong, Simi) and discover new places (Colagrossi, J. Keverson, Roth, Starlite, Teldeschi). Try chardonnays, pinot noirs, syrahs, and zinfandels, as well as some lesser-known varietals: ciliegiolo or claret anyone? It’s not difficult to find some great food to accompany these wonderful wines. Super fresh crops of spring vegetables and seafood right out of the ocean are in grocery stores and on restaurant menus. All in all, a short and restorative break. Enjoy!

Dance Your Way to A Smarter Brain Lynn Funk In his recent book “The Brain Health Guide” Mark Underwood, a neuroscience researcher, shares all the benefits of dancing for our brains. Some of the highlights of dancing from his book include the following: “Dancing has long been known to be an excellent way to stay physically fit. A study from Albert Einstein College of Medicine reported in the New England Journal of Medicine that dance can be a powerful way to improve brain health. This research focused on the effect of dancing on the brain. It measured factors such as memory, sense of well-being, serotonin, and stress levels. The study showed that while exercise is good for overall health, only one exercise had the biggest impact when it came to improving overall cognitive skills. That exercise was frequent dancing. The study included other forms of exercise such as swimming, biking and cognitive exercise like crossword puzzles, but it was frequent dancing that had the biggest impact on the cognitive skills of the brain. Dr. Joseph Coyle, a Harvard Medical School psychiatrist, said the cerebral cortex and hippocampus of our brains are very elastic

which means they “rewire” themselves after each use. Dancing helps rewire the brain. Other studies have shown that areas of the brain most affected by aging can be engaged, rewired and utilized before they are lost. The stimulation resulting from dancing can engage these areas of the brain in a positive way. Dancing opens up new pathways in the brain that improve mental capabilities. The more you work out your brain, the better you will be able to process and remember information. Novelty stimulation, like learning a new type of dance, is essential to exercising the brain. The point is to challenge the brain and stimulate those pathways for long-term, better brain health. When you memorize new dance steps, you stimulate seemingly unconnected neural pathways— important for good brain health as you age.” So dust off those dancing shoes or boots and come join us in DANCE! Corte Bella offers line dance classes and we have our own line dance social group, called the Corte Bella Steppers, which meets two times a month to practice the dances we have learned and the best part is that joining the CB Steppers is FREE. Our website, www.cbsteppers.com has all the information on the classes and our social dance nights.

Questions Commonly Asked of the Aesthetician Kathi Dahl, Licensed Aesthetician Spring is in the air…a great time for renewal. Out with the old and in with the new! Have you ever considered a facial peel? Almost everyone can benefit from a chemical peel. Peels can improve the look of your skin dramatically and leave you looking younger and healthier. If you have any of the following issues you should consider a peel: 1. Dry skin 2. Acne scarring 3. Lines and wrinkles 4. Pigmentation 5. Sun damage 6. Dull or lifeless skin

There are virtually no risks associated with light or superficial peels, as they only mildly exfoliate the skin. However, you should, as always, protect your skin with sunscreen. Light peels are the most gentle and can be considered a “lunchtime” aesthetic procedure. They only remove the top layer of skin and can instantly give you a brighter look with smoother texture. They can be used to minimize fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, age spots and dry or flaky skin. They are usually made from alpha hydroxyl or beta hydroxyl acids, known as AHA’s and BHA’s which include glycolic, lactic and salicylic acids. It is also very common to use fruit enzymes and acids from natural sources such as pumpkins, cranberries, and pineapples. Superficial peels do not hurt, but you may feel a slight tingling. There is virtually no down time. You might be a little pink afterward and get some mild flaking. You can apply your normal makeup afterward. Feel the Breeze on Your Face Nancy Wendler On a warm, sunny day on April 5th, 38 Drop Topper members in 19 convertibles departed Corte Bella for scenic Parker, Arizona. Parker is a picturesque town nestled on the Colorado River about 45 minutes south of Lake Havasu. Parker was founded in 1908 and named for Ely Parker, the first Native American commissioner for the U.S. government. The Drop Toppers stayed for two nights at the impressive Blue Water Casino and Resort with breathtaking views from their hotel rooms that faced crystalline water and majestic mountains. About half the group golfed while others gambled, relaxed, and toured Lake Havasu by boat. Dinner in Lake Havasu was next to the incredulous London Bridge. London Bridge was built in the 1830s and formerly spanned the River Thames in London. In 1967, it was dismantled and relocated to Arizona by Robert McCulloch. Each granite block from the bridge was numbered to help reconstruct the bridge in Lake Havasu. The bridge and canal were completed in 1971. Adult beverages at the end of the day were enjoyed at the Cantina, a shaded bar area of the resort that overlooks the Colorado River. Lake Havasu and the Colorado River are key destinations for people who are looking for a fishing paradise; they can hook striped bass, small-mouthed bass, stripers, channel catfish, and bluegill.

If you love the feel of the breeze on your face, the wind in your hair, and the call of the open road, join the Drop Toppers for our monthly activities.

Drop Toppers Nancy Wendler On Monday, March 27th, the Drop Toppers Club gathered in the Anacapa parking lot and drove “tops down to Top Golf in Scottsdale. Top Golf is a premier sports and entertainment venue that creates unforgettable experiences with fun and competitive golf games. The set-up is similar to a bowling lane with 100 climatecontrolled playing bays, a wide assortment of golf games, full service restaurants and bars, 200 HDTVs, and a rooftop terrace with fire pit. There are Judie Krauklis taking a swing private event spaces as well.

We had a blast playing the various golf games and enjoyed great camaraderie over a fabulous lunch. If you are interested in joining Drop Toppers, please contact Alan and Sue McVey at 623-2140901. Drop Toppers gathering before the event

Corte Bella Vets Celebrate the Past Year and Look Forward to the Next… and her colleagues attempt to identify funds available for struggling veterans within the system; when they hit a wall, they call the Corte Bella Vets.

Donna Norton

Stephanie has seen strong, rugged men break down and cry when they realize someone they don’t even know is willing to help them get back on their feet with a car part, partial rent payment, or a utility bill that is months overdue.

Using funds collected from the membership, the Corte Bella Vets gathered for a social event to celebrate the good works of the organization. Three years ago, Jon Wendt suggested to Larry Leighton that we should have some sort of Veterans group here in Corte Bella. Larry agreed and has been a tremendous driving force to lead us in making a positive difference in the lives of Arizona Veterans. We welcome anyone living here in Corte Bella to join us as we continue the journey of an ever-evolving organization. On hand at the gathering, Stephanie Nix, a counselor for Northwest Valley Veterans Clinic shared her personal thanks for allowing her to be a conduit to helping local veterans. She

In addition to helping individual Veterans, the organization has helped Arizona Veterans involved in Soldier’s Best Friend, Horse Rhythm Foundation, Mary Ellen’ Place, James Walton Home, Maricopa County Standdown, Vets for Vets in AZ, Honor Stephanie Nix, Northwest Flight Arizona, Camp Corral, Veterans Clinic See4Vets, and America’s Mighty Warriors. Debbie Lee, a Goldstar Mother, was presented with a check at the event. Our donations to these organizations last year exceeded $64,000. Once we conclude this year, we will have given over $101,000 to Arizona Veterans.

Special thanks to Mark Debbie Lee with America’s Mighty Warriors receives a check for $2,000 “Gus” Grissom for being the Tournament Chair of this years’ Golf Tournament and to Tom Asmussen for his vigilance in obtaining contributions from local vendors. We also want to thank YOU the residents of Corte Bella for your continued support of the organization and our mission. We hope to see you at a meeting in the near future, the second Tuesday of each month at 8:30 a.m.

Hoover Dam Excursion Cynthia Goulet Corte Bella Adventure Group lived up to its name on a three-day outing to the Hoover Dam and Boulder City, Nevada area April 8th – 10th. Day One option was a hike on a former railroad track bed from Hoover Dam Lodge to Hoover Dam and back, a distance of about seven miles. The track had been built in the 1930s for hauling dam building supplies by train. Subsequent removal of the rail track left behind a wide, fairly level gravel surface trail, which takes hikers and bicyclists through five tunnels, with views all along of Lake Mead. Upon arriving at Hoover Dam, hikers spent time at the Visitors Center and walked along the dam’s many overlooks taking in the views of the monolithic concrete structure rising several hundred feet above the Colorado River. The dam is rated as one of America’s Seven Modern Civil Engineering Wonders. From top to bottom, it is 726 feet, and is 660 feet thick at its base, and curves to a width of 45 feet at the top.

Day Two provided the main attraction, which was a 12 nautical mile, 8 hour guided kayak tour on the Colorado River through Black Canyon. Thirty-one Adventure Group members and guests were picked up at Hoover Dam Lodge by the outfitters, Boulder City River Riders. The National Park Service only allows 15 kayaks per launch, requiring our group to be split between two early morning launches. Transported by vans pulling trailers filled with single and tandem kayaks, we were driven through a secure area, to the edge of the Colorado River, immediately below the Dam. The view from the river looking up at the concrete structure was an entirely different view from that of the day before when looking down from atop the dam! We kayakers had a passing wave of awe and gratefulness for that tremendous wall of thick concrete, holding back the waters of Lake Mead. Only authorized outfitters may launch kayak tours from this point. The scenery along the river is spectacular: timeless, awesome, inspiring, uplifting. Five bighorn sheep watched us paddle by at one point. At another point, we beached and climbed up the bank and into a small cave, wading into thigh deep, warm water, a darkened sauna provided by mother nature. A second beaching found us walking along a wash, in a trickling stream, then climbing up a steel rod

ladder, and then sitting in pools of natural hot springs. These stops were not meant to be “hot tub” opportunities, however; they were intended, as explained by our excellent guides, to allow us to close our eyes, to be “present in the moment” and sense the spirit and grandeur of this place, timeless as mother earth. Kayakers were also able to paddle in and out of several shallow caves accessible only by water, including “Emerald Cave” named because during a brief interlude in the afternoon, the sunlight reaches into the cave’s interior and causes the water and reflection on the cave’s walls to appear a brilliant emerald color.

Day Three option was a 35 mile bike ride on a paved trail, River Mountains Loop, recommended to be taken counter clockwise. The first several miles parallel at a distance the shoreline of Lake Mead; then came the middle 18 or so miles which proved to be very challenging, lots of uphill and fewer downhill (or so it seemed!); but all was made up for by the last stretch, all downhill and about 7 miles long, back to the trail’s beginning. A very happy ending! A repeat of the kayak outing is planned for April 2018. Come and join the Adventure Group and reserve your place on this memorable outing by contacting Steve Downing at 937-684-1733.

Who Rescued Who? Or the Dogs Who Watch Over Me... Randee Hendrychs Congratulations! You’re about to become a new dog parent. Few things are as rewarding as adopting and caring for a pooch. Bringing home a new dog is a big step. Here are some tips for adopting the perfect dog. 1. Be realistic about your lifestyle and energy level. 2. Who else lives in your home? 3. Think critically about your future. 4. Do you have a hightolerance for fur and slobber? 5. Remember that some dogs behave differently at shelters than in their own homes. 6. Observe your potential new family member. 7. Rely on the experts at the shelter, they have invaluable advice. 8. Adopt... If you have never made a trip to your local animal shelter or no kill shelter, it can be a daunting task to choose the right pet for you. As an animal lover, you will want to take them all home. However, we narrowed it down to two... We are the lucky parents of two rescued puppies. We found Bentley and Bella at the Rover Rescue in Illinois before we moved to Arizona. Bentley was only 14 weeks old and a bundle of black fur---like a baby bear cub. Bella was found in Tennessee, abandoned and abused. We were very lucky to find them that day and in good health.

Bella, our Queensland Australian Blue Heeler Australian cattlemen and ranchers love the breed’s toughness and work ethic, and the dogs quickly became popular as cattle herders. They are also called Australian Heelers, Queensland Heelers and Australian Cattle Dogs. They don’t bark too much, but they are still very protective of the home. Blue Heelers can be cautious and wary—qualities that make them excellent watchdogs. They are also friendly and loving companions. Remember dogs are the perfect family member: they never complain, they love you unconditionally and they are always anxious to see you come home. Bentley, our Black German Sheperd

Bentley is a full Black German Shepherd and Bella is a Queensland Australian Blue Heeler. All German Shepherd puppies are either born black, gray or white and can change color as they grow. Their true coat color can usually be determined at about 8 weeks of age. Black German Shepherd puppies are born black and will stay black through adulthood. German Shepherds are fierce but friendly, and have a calm confidence that may seem kind of aloof. When in need, however, a German Shepherd is instantly ready to protect, play a game or perform a task—in some cases as a guard dog, police dog, herder or seeing eye dog. With a strong work ethic and an eager intelligence, they crave challenges. Mixing native Dingoes with Collies and other herding dogs, Australian George Elliott developed the Blue Heeler in 1840.

Outdoor Odyssey Sharon Orlopp The Corte Bella Adventure Group sojourned to Sedona, home of some of the most spectacular scenery in the world with red rock monoliths aptly named Coffeepot, Cathedral, Thunder Mountain and other unique monikers. Sedona is a four seasons playground that possesses a unique blend of old and new, wild and tame, and luxurious and rustic. Sedona is nationally acclaimed for its natural spiritual centers called vortexes which provide metaphysical energy and mystique. Steve Downing is an experienced hiker who pre-hikes all our varied and vibrant hiking locations. He does a phenomenal job of coordinating memory-making excursions. He chose Soldier’s Pass and the Brins Mesa Trail in Sedona due to the massive arches along the canyon wall. The view from the top of Brin’s Mesa makes Steamboat Rock really look like a boat. When we arrived at the massive, jaw-dropping, aweinspiring rust red hills, buttes and formations, we discovered that the trails we had planned on hiking were closed due to trail maintenance. However, this idyllic Western town offers a multitude of hiking trails, and so by backtracking less than a mile, Steve led us to the Cibola Pass Trailhead located off Jordan Road which took us to some of the same sites as our original route. This trail is high enough above Sedona to provide sweeping, breath-taking

panoramic views of Munds Mountain and Coffeepot Rock. We ultimately intersected with the originally planned Soldier’s Pass Trail at Devil’s Kitchen Sinkhole which is about 200 feet in diameter and 180 feet deep. The first observed collapse at this famous sinkhole was in the 1880s and the most recent collapse was in 1989. It is a heart-stopping, wildly wonderful chasm that beckons explorers to be cautious near its edges. These unique hiking destinations with spectacular landscapes soothe our souls and rejuvenate our wonder and appreciation of nature. Technology also travels with us. Steve took a picture of the QR code on the hiking trail sign with his phone so that we always had a hiking map. Bob Fletcher’s app on his phone continually told us our elevation and miles we had hiked. Arizona is one of the best locations to live, work, and play with its warm climate, picturesque scenery, and diverse flora and fauna. The Corte Bella Adventure Club offers hiking, biking, kayaking, horse riding, and hot air balloon experiences to residents. Come join us by contacting Steve Downing at 937-684-1733!

Difference Between Memorial Day and Veterans Day Larry Leighton Some people confuse Memorial Day and Veterans Day or wonder how they differ. Memorial Day is a day for remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or due to wounds sustained in battle.

Memorial Day History

While those who died are also remembered, Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor ALL who served – in wartime and peacetime – and whether they died or survived. Veterans Day is always observed officially on November 11, regardless of the day of the week on which it falls.

In early rural America, this day was usually performed in late summer and was an occasion for family reunions and picnics. After the Civil War, America’s need for a secular, patriotic ceremony to honor its military dead became prominent, as monuments to fallen soldiers were erected and dedicated, and ceremonies centering on the decoration of soldier’s graves were held in towns and cities throughout the nation.

The Poppy, A Symbol of Memorial Day

According to www.almanac.com, the wearing of poppies in honor of America’s war dead is traditionally done on Memorial Day (not Veterans Day). The origin of the red poppy as a modern-day symbol of this day was actually the idea of an American woman, Miss Moina Michael. Read more about the inspiration for the poppy at http://www.greatwar.co.uk/ poems/moina-michael-we-shall-keepfaith.htm.

The custom of honoring ancestors by cleaning cemeteries and decorating graves is an ancient and worldwide tradition, but the specific origin of Memorial Day, or Decoration Day as it was first known, are unclear.

After World War I, the day expanded to honor those who have died in all of America’s wars.

In war-torn battlefields, the red poppy (papaver rhoeas) was one of the first plants to grow. Its seeds scattered in the wind and sat dormant in the ground, only germinating when the ground is disturbed – as it was by the very brutal fighting during World War I. The practice of wearing poppies was further inspired by the poem “In Flanders Fields,” written in 1915 by Canadian soldier John McCrae. He saw the poppies in burials around his artillery position in Belgium. Today, poppies are both the symbol of loss of life as well as a symbol of recovery and new life, especially in support of servicemen and women who were damaged physically or emotionally.
