Putting Your Best Foot Forward When Selling Your Home

Are you selling your home? I certainly hope not, but in case you are, this article could save you or the buyer a lot of stress. So, here we go. When a home goes into escrow, the HOA receives a request from the title company to conduct a Disclosure Mike Arrington, Corte Bella Country Club Association, Inc. General Manager

Inspection. Once notified, the HOA attempts to contact the homeowner to request permission to enter all areas of the exterior property. Sometimes we obtain permission and other times we do not. The reasons vary including not being able to contact the owner. Regardless of whether permission is received or not, the inspection is completed and submitted. However, without permission, the inspector will not step onto the property. Without permission, the inspection takes place from the front of the lot (street) or, if a golf course lot, the rear may sometimes be inspected. Most often, if permission to enter is not received, the rear of the lot and sometimes areas of the side yard cannot be inspected well. The inspection report is then submitted with the annotation that certain areas of the lot could not be seen and were not inspected. The problem with this is that sometimes the lot may be sold with existing violations of the Architectural rules that could not be seen because the inspector could not go on the property, and

8 | CB Times | The Official Community Magazine of Corte Bella

those violations are now inherited by the buyer who may have to deal with the issues. Another problem that may interest a current Corte Bella resident is that if the inspection report is received before the deal closes, it could kill the deal and sometimes it does. This is because the seller was not aware that they had existing violations on the lot. Maybe they changed the exterior of the lot and did not submit for approval or some plants died and were never replaced, etc. Obviously, that is not good for the seller and time is of the essence. Oftentimes, a seller and/or buyer may be in a hurry to close the deal for whatever reason. Maybe it’s a cash offer and that speeds the closing process up significantly. In that case, the deal may be closed before the inspection report is ever received at title and neither the buyer or seller cares because they just want to get it over with as quickly as possible. I’ve been there and I think we all have. You are excited and just want to get it done, right? Again, this can create future problems for the owner. So, now that I have made you aware of the potential problems, let me offer a solution to those same problems. If you are thinking of selling your home in the near future or you are not sure if you are in compliance or not, please contact our HOA office and have your lot inspected in advance. Being proactive is always the best approach and may save you and/or a buyer a lot of stress in the future. This article is intended to be helpful to our Corte Bella residents and help you avoid any issues at the wrong time. If you are selling your home and want to be prepared, contact the HOA and let us be of service. Thank you.

Board Talk I wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving and know that we’ll be seeing many Christmas lights around the community soon. They will be most impressive in the San Ramon area. Thank You to the residents that provide the impressive holiday display. The Corte Bella Fall Festival event kicked off the Michael McVeigh, President, Board of Directors season with an outstanding event attended by 300+ residents; many returning from up North. A big thanks to Pam Lawrence for an outstanding event and Linda Wright for the photos she takes and posts on our web, as well as our outstanding Anacapa team. As we near Thanksgiving, I would like to express our thanks for everyone’s ongoing support for our most impressive community amenity, the Anacapa restaurant. The Food & Beverage operation is like a central hub with many tentacles supporting a host of interest groups (SOuL’s Chili Cook-off, CB Vets Dinner Dance, etc.), HOA events, Thanksgiving Day Buffet, Christmas Tree Lighting Buffet, July 4th Dinner Dance, Mother’s and Father’s Day events, and many others. Anacapa compliments or creates almost every food activity enjoyed by residents and guests. Look at the calendar for the balance of the year. In fact, look at just the month of November. Count the number of events that require a dinner, buffet or special food preparation by our Anacapa team. In addition, look at the planning, staff scheduling, hours they work on weekends, holidays and other times that they would prefer being with their families. They are here supporting us. Please thank them the next time you visit the Anacapa or attend an event. Chef Dan, Ron, Jill, Dawn and the entire Anacapa team consistently do everything possible to ensure complete customer satisfaction. Enjoy our beautiful gem of an amenity and be thankful for the loyalty of the employees. Our 2018 Budget has been presented to the community and submitted to the Board for approval at the October meeting. The 2018 Assessments

were very favorable and I thank the Finance Committee and its Chairman, Dan Kronlund, for their efforts on our behalf. In fact, thanks to all of our committee volunteers for all you do for Corte Bella. Let’s not forget our Treasurer, David Ornstein, for leading the 2018 Budget project.

... thank them the next time you visit the Anacapa or attend an event. Chef Dan, Ron, Jill, Dawn and the entire Anacapa team consistently do everything possible to ensure complete customer satisfaction.

The next Board workshop will be held Friday, November 10 at 9:00 a.m. and the next Board meeting is on Wednesday, November 15 at 10:00 a.m. Your thoughts, opinions and concerns are very important to me as your Board President. Contact me at any time, at mmcveigh3@cox.net/623-433-9921.

Mouthwatering Brisket This incredible mouthwatering brisket was recently a featured item at the Men’s Only Cooking Class where we demonstrated different methods for grilling, cooking, and smoking foods. This recipe ensures that the brisket will be tender, juicy and moist. Some people claim that brisket is the national food of Texas. Regardless of where you hail from, grilling brisket is a great reason to have a party and invite your friends over.

Executive Chef Dan Haywood, Anacapa Restaurant

Dry Rub

2 cups kosher salt 2 cups brown sugar, golden 2 oz. sweet Hungarian paprika 2 oz. chili powder, medium heat 2 oz. granulated onion 2 oz. dry mustard 1 oz. granulated garlic 1 Tbsp. dry thyme 1 Tbsp. dry oregano 2 Tbsp. black pepper, ground fresh 1 Tbsp. celery salt 1 Tbsp. ground ginger 1 Tbsp. ground coriander 1 tsp. ground cayenne (optional, but recommended)

Cooking the Brisket • • •

• • • • •

Preheat the grill. Season the raw brisket on both sides with the dry rub. Turn one side of the grill on low. Place a pan filled with water on the bottom of the side of the grill that isn’t turned on. Place the brisket over the side with the water pan. Keep water in the pan as you go. If you use a charcoal grill, put coals on one side and have a water pan in the bottom on the other side. Let cook for 3-4 hours at a lower heat; about 275-300 degrees on your thermometer. When the brisket reaches a temperature of about 160 degrees, wrap with foil and add a little beef broth into the top opening of the foil. Keep the brisket wrapped and continue to cook until the internal temp is 190195 and fork tender. Remove from grill and let stand for 10-15 minutes. Trim the fat and slice meat thinly across the grain. Top with juice from the pan. Serve with your favorite accompaniments.

Method:

Combine all the rub ingredients in a large mixing bowl and mix well with a whisk or stand mixer. Store the rub in an airtight container in a cool dark place. It can be used for a few weeks.

Welcome Back Stephanie! I couldn’t end our interview without asking her some questions about bartending. Some of her favorite drinks to make include Brandy Alexander, Almond Joy, and Chocolate Martinis. She recommends those as dessert drinks. The least requested drink she’s ever made was a Ramos Gin Fizz; a New Orleans classic made with gin, citrus, egg white, cream and orange flower water. Great for brunch! Finally, for seasonal drinks such as Christmas, she recommends an eggnog cocktail, mulled wine, or a hot toddy.

Barbara Morin This month, I was pleased and delighted to do an interview with Stephanie Posey, Anacapa’s own talented bartender. Stephanie was born and raised not far from here in Laveen, Arizona. Although rapidly becoming an “urban village,” Laveen was more of an agricultural community when Stephanie was a child. She grew up on a nonworking farm although they did have horses, pigs and rodeo bulls. Growing up in that type of environment captured her interest in animals and soon she was very active in 4H. Stephanie started working as a hostess in the Anacapa before moving on to become bartender. This December will mark her eighth year with us. She attended Canyon State College with thoughts of a career in teaching. After two years, she changed her mind and started working full-time at the Anacapa Restaurant. She loves her job very much as well as the fine working relationship she has with each of the staff members. She remarks often, “We treat each other like family.”

When Stephanie is not working she enjoys spending time with her three month old son, Shane, and staying in her parents’ mountain cabin in Payson Arizona. A few of her favorite pastimes include playing softball and sand volleyball.

We’re fortunate to have Stephanie at the Anacapa and wish her a bright and successful career. On your next night out to your Anacapa restaurant, please take time to stop and say “Hi” and offer a fine thank you for the great job she’s doing!

“Your Northwest Valley Desert Oasis!”

TWO working for YOU!

Stephanie enjoys bartending as it gives her the opportunity to socialize with different people. She understands the importance of being a good host and serving guests while they’re waiting to be seated. She credits her parents for instilling a good work ethic in both her and her brother.

Fitness Center Etiquette 101 Christine Brown-Clower, CPT (Certified Personal Trainer) need your help! We have an amazing fitness center that can help us all become--and stay--stronger and healthier. As more of our friends and neighbors return to Corte Bella to enjoy Arizona’s most beautiful season, the demand for the use of our equipment becomes much higher. There are safety rules and principles of common courtesy for our facility. By working together, we can help each other meet our fitness goals. There are three general principles: • Be aware of your surroundings • Be courteous to others • Treat the equipment like your own

Do not talk on cell phones in the fitness center as they, as well as lengthy conversations, should be taken outside as it is distracting to those working out.

Please refrain from using perfumes and colognes in the gym. Some of our members are allergic to these scents which are amplified by sweat.

Share the TVs: We have wonderful TV sets for everyone’s use but we need to share access with each other. Before changing channels, please check to see if someone else is already watching a program.

Allow people to “work in:” If you are doing multiple sets on machines, please allow others to “work in” a set while you are resting.

We

We ask you to follow several basic rules that reflect the expectations of all fitness centers: • Wipe down the equipment: We ask that you wipe down the machines, benches, etc. every time after you use them. It’s a matter of health and safety. •

Limit your use of the cardio equipment to 30 minutes if others are waiting. We have a limited number of machines and a lot of demand for their use.

If you see someone doing something that’s an immediate danger to themselves or others, notify a staff member. If you see someone who is not following the principles described above, please speak with one of the fitness center staff. When all of us help by following these principles, our beautiful facility can serve the fitness needs of all our residents and guests-and do so even more effectively!

Redesigned, Enhanced Website Dave Wright, CB Web Support Team In late July 2017, the Corte Bella website was redesigned and relaunched. In addition to some cosmetic changes, readily apparent on the Home Page, the website’s Main Menu was redesigned and several new items were added, primarily on the public side of the website. The Amenities tab lets viewers take a look around inside Corte Bella, whereas the In the Area tab gives them a look at the surrounding area and the many services available in Phoenix’s West Valley.

Another new addition is an interactive map under the Stay Connected tab. It is more user-friendly than the former PDF version, and it can also be used to find directions.

One of the newest features added to the website is a series of web pages listing recipes from Chef Dan Haywood’s themed cooking classes over the past few years. You can find them under the Amenities -> Anacapa Restaurant -> Anacapa Recipes tab.

In the near future, we hope to offer online bill payment for HOA social accounts and online voting services. We are also exploring the possibility of online event ticket purchases.

As you explore the private, password-protected, resident portion of the website you will notice a new entry under the HOA main menu tab. Volunteer Opportunities in Corte Bella lists upcoming events and opportunities for residents to volunteer to help our Lifestyle Manger, Pam Lawrence, set-up, tear-down, and run events. It also lists vacancies on the various committees to help the Board of Directors shepherd the community and its assets. Additionally, the website lists all community interest groups and clubs under the Lifestyle tab.

For those who haven’t noticed, the website’s Photo Gallery, under the Lifestyle tab, contains photographs from no less than 52 HOA events that have already taken place in 2017; standing as clear evidence that Corte Bella is, indeed, an active adult community.

Finally, a word on the Discussion Groups. These are available for users to exchange ideas across a wide range of topics. HOA management encourages everyone to use these for their intended purpose. But, please, do not use them to exchange personal information, meant primarily for a single recipient. There are other venues for that type of exchange. Also, before posting, you might want to refresh your memory as to the Corte Bella Discussion Group Policy. It is located on the website under the Resource Center tab under Governing Documents -> Policies.

Honoring Veterans Among Us Donna Norton Every year on November 11th, our nation recognizes men and women who have served in the military. Their service and sacrifice ensures the freedoms we enjoy in the United States. The Phoenix Veterans Day Parade is recognized as one of the largest attended parades in the nation; it is celebrating its 21st year. The parade starts at 11:00 a.m. on November 11th at Montebello and Central. It heads south and then turns east on Camelback Road. The final turn is south on 7th Street and then it ends at Indian School Road. This year’s parade theme is Silent Sacrifice: Honoring Our Cold War Veterans. Phoenix-area residents can submit their nominations for veterans to be selected as a Veteran Grand Marshal and ride in the Phoenix Veterans Day Parade. We are very proud that U.S. Army Colonel Larry Leighton, a Corte Bella resident, has been selected to be one of the Grand Marshals. Larry served in the Army for 28 years. He was awarded the prestigious Purple Heart after suffering wounds during an assault in Vietnam in 1970. His distinguished military career included staff and command positions in South Korea and at the Pentagon.

Larry Leighton with a WW II veteran; one of 96 who survived the Bataan Death March veterans. Larry is very active in serving Corte Bella and our local community. Congratulations on this well-deserved honor, Larry!

After retiring, Larry founded the Corte Bella Vets which has donated over $110,000 to Arizona veteran charities and individual

Three Generations Complete Rim to Rim Hike Donna Norton The sun was two hours from rising when we began our adventure to hike rim to rim of the Grand Canyon on Saturday, September 30th. Our head lamps were on, jackets zipped, and supplies ready as we navigated the sandy surface of the Bright Angel Trail with hopes that we would arrive on the other side before darkness fell upon us again. The trip was planned and coordinated by Vicki Faaborg, Corte Bella Adventurer, in 2016 as she enlisted the support of family and friends to make it an experience to remember. Initial planning had ten people, but only seven were able to make the final muster. Vicki booked rooms on both the South and North ends of the Grand Canyon so the hiking party could enjoy the comforts of home on either side of the journey. Fortunately, her son Greg (48 years old) and her two oldest grandchildren Joshua (Atlanta based software consultant) and Jessica (senior at Vanderbilt in Nashville) were able to make the journey. The youngest, Jessica, led the team into the lower canyon during the early morning hours; we arrived at Phantom Ranch at 10:00 a.m. We discovered pricing that made Denny’s seem like a basement bargain; breakfasts were $26.95 and lemonade cost $3.75. The folks we met in the canyon were friendly and willing to tell their stories; many of them were accomplished hikers who had been doing the trip on an annual basis for years. With our reservoir of water replenished and our shoes cleared of sand, we were ready for the next stage.

We left Phantom Ranch for a hike in the sun for seven miles before we hit our next watering hole at the Cottonwood Camp Ground. The trails were well defined and easily traversed; several streams ran parallel to the trail. We had traveled over 17 miles and the rest of the journey was uphill. The common question became “how much longer to go….” Stops at Manzanita rest house, Roaring Springs, and the Supai Tunnel provided much needed rest and replenishment of water. The sun was starting to set which provided spectacular picture opportunities, but the winds were blowing with gusts over 30 mph and the trail drop offs were perilous. We wanted to get through this area quickly, but the 30% grade challenged our ability to move fast. Having trained on stair masters and treadmills, we decided that a 10 second pause was in order at every new turn and were excited to hear that “when you see the basket of rocks” we would know it was our LAST TURN. We exited the canyon in the dark at 7:00 p.m. to a clapping and whooping celebration provided by the previous day hikers who wanted to make the experience special. We then embarked on a 1.7 mile hike to the North Rim Grand Canyon Lodge for dinner and cabin keys for a shower and warm bed. We had traveled rim to rim and for Vicki, it was three generations that could celebrate having achieved something that very few undertake. A special thanks goes to Steve Downing who helped us get ready with a Goat Camp Trail walk in the White Tanks and a 9.8 mile hike in Prescott to prepare us for the journey.

COMMUNITY

The Pool at Corte Bella Dave and Linda Wright Almost every day of the year, residents and their guests enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the Corte Bella Country Club pool. Some take advantage of the water, others prefer to sunbathe, and then there are those who just like relaxing in a chaise lounge and reading or napping, either in the open air or under an umbrella. Some facts about our community pool: The pool holds 165,000 gallons of water and its total area is 4,800 sq. ft. (60 ft. x 80 ft.) The shaded area under the canopy is 600 sq. ft. (20 ft. x 30 ft.) A very comfortable water temperature of 84 degrees F. is maintained year-round. The pool is open from early morning until late at night for the enjoyment of our residents and their guests. It consists of three lap lanes, one therapeutic rehab lane, a large open water area, a Jacuzzi, and plenty of chaise lounges and umbrellas for those who simply wish to sun bathe or read and relax in the beautiful Arizona outdoors. Every Monday through Friday morning, between 9:15 and 10:15, (a full 60-minute workout) an enthusiastic group of Corte Bellans enjoy daily water aerobics class in our community pool. These classes are perfect for people looking for a low-impact exercise routine in a friendly, open air environment. When not being used for water aerobics classes, the “deep” side of the pool is roped off to create three lanes for lap swimming and one larger lane for physical therapy. Each lane is 75 feet long; which means that 35 laps (1 lap = 2 lengths or 150 feet) equal 1 mile. Exercise and therapy are far less painful in water than on land. Water allows for low-impact, low-weight bearing exercise that permits the synovial fluid to bring nutrients to the joint surfaces. It also minimizes the risk of injury or undue stress on the joints. Furthermore, it reduces the jarring forces on muscles, ligaments, tendons, and bones. Exercising in the water produces 12% to 14% more resistance than similar activity on the ground. The pool is also a great place to socialize with friends and neighbors, to meet new, interesting people, and to get a low-impact workout, seemingly without working out!

It provides good, low-impact therapy for some injuries

It keeps your heart rate up, but takes some of the impact stress off your body

It tones muscles and builds strength It provides an all-over body workout, as nearly all your muscles are used

Swimming can help you burn calories, lose weight, and keep blood sugars under control. It also helps lower LDL (bad cholesterol) and raises HDL (good cholesterol). The following are benefits that you can expect from even a mild swimming regimen. • •

• • • •

A Friendly Reminder: Before starting any type of exercise program, it is always best to check with your doctor to discuss the program and if it is safe for your medical condition.

Exercising in water provides the following benefits: •

It’s a relaxing and peaceful form of exercise

It alleviates stress

It improves coordination, balance, and posture

It improves flexibility

Full Body Workout – uses all the muscles in the body. 30 minutes in the water equals 45 minutes on land. General Wellbeing – 30 minutes, 3 times a week, is a good way to stay fit and healthy, and to maintain a positive mental outlook. De-stresses & Relaxes – A light swim can lower stress levels, reduce anxiety and depression, and improve sleep patterns. Burns Calories – Swimming is one of the most effective ways to burn calories. A gentle swim can burn over 200 calories in just 30 minutes; more than double that of walking. Lowers Risk of Diseases – Swimming guards against heart disease, stroke, and Type II diabetes. Supports the Body – Water supports 90% of the body’s weight; reducing stress on all body parts, especially injured joints or muscles. Increases Energy Levels – Swimming increases your metabolic rate. Exercise Without Sweating – The water constantly cools you during the workout. Social Benefit – You can interact freely with others while still exercising in the water Lunch – While you’re there, take advantage of the nearby Anacapa Restaurant and order a light lunch to enjoy at poolside. For your convenience, a direct-dial telephone is available for restaurant orders. The phone is located on the far side of the HOA administrative building, past the rest rooms and the outdoor shower. You can pay for lunch with cash, check, major credit card, or just charge it to your HOA account. And the Anacapa delivers!

So, what are you waiting for? Enjoy the Arizona sunshine (use plenty of sunscreen, of course), the fresh air, and share some quality relaxation time with friends and neighbors at the Corte Bella pool. (Note: The above health and fitness facts were compiled from multiple health and fitness websites on the Internet.)

Exploring Our 33rd State Joel Piaskowski There are many places worth visiting in our great country to take in all the beauty it has to offer. One of them is the Oregon coast. I recently went to Oregon and drove the coast along with venturing into central Oregon to see some of the many waterfalls that the state has to offer. I started out in Astoria which is on the Columbia River. This is where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean and is called “The Graveyard of the Pacific.” Since 1792 over 2,000 vessels have sunk here, due to the fact that unlike other rivers, the Columbia has no delta. The current hits the Pacific “like a fire hose.” A great stop in Astoria is the Columbia River Maritime Museum with over 30,000 objects and pictures. Driving south down the coast, some great stops are Fort Clatsop which was the encampment of the Lewis & Clark expedition of 1805-1806. Additional towns and places of interest are Cannon Beach, Seaside, Ecola State Park, Tillamook and Depoe Bay. In Tillamook, I toured The Tillamook Cheese Company which has been making cheese, ice cream, sour cream and yogurt since 1909. Depoe Bay is known for whale watching. Approximately 20,000 whales migrate southward past this area from midDecember to the end of January. The same number migrates northward from mid-March through the first week of June. The famous fishing trip sequence from the 1975 movie One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest was filmed here. All along the coast, seafood is plentiful: clams, prawns, halibut, salmon and oysters. If you are a seafood lover, it doesn’t get any better than the Oregon coast. Further south is the quaint town of Yachats, Heceta Head Light House, and Florence. Along the way you have the beauty of the Pacific Ocean. In Florence, you can walk the Historic Old Town with a must stop at “Mo’s” restaurant to have some of their world-famous chowder. The Sea Lion Caves in Florence are the largest system of sea caverns in the United States. At Florence, I headed inland on Highway 126 toward Eugene and the Willamette Valley. I used Eugene, the home of the Oregon University Ducks, as my base camp for several days. Heading Southeast from Eugene, I went to Cottage Grove and drove the “Covered Bridge Trail.” Cottage Grove, a town of just under 10,000, is a two time “All-American City” winner. This area draws many visitors from around the world due to the large concentration of wooden covered bridges that were built from the 1920’s to 1940’s. The climactic parade scene of the movie Animal House was filmed here.

Salt Creek Falls The waterfalls I visited required varying degrees of hiking. Those visited were Sweet Creek Falls, Wildwood Falls, Diamond Creek Falls, Siuslaw Falls and Salt Creek Falls which is the third tallest falls in the state at 286 feet. As we all know, wine goes well with seafood. On my last day I went to tour King Estate Winery just outside of Lorane. King Estate is best known for their Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. They use biodynamic farming on their 1,033 acres. After a delicious lunch on the patio overlooking fields of lavender, I headed to the Portland airport to return to Phoenix. My “Bucket List” trip to Oregon was completed and checked off. The Beaver State met all my expectations as part of this great country.

Christmas Walk-About-Night The Corte Bella Stringers The annual Corte Bella Christmas “Walk-About-Night” will be held on Friday, December 1st at dusk. This is the official “light-up night” for many of the holiday decorations on San Ramon Drive. It is also the night for the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle donation drive. Each year the residents of Corte Bella and their guests take a break from their daily lives and enjoy walking the enchanted, winter wonderland decorated streets. It is also a night to enjoy the beginning of the holiday season and to reflect on our good fortune to live in a great community like Corte Bella. On this night, you can also donate to those in our area who are not so fortune. Last year our friends and neighbors put over $6,700 in the Red Kettle – in four hours! This year we hope to beat that amount. We hope you will stop by and see over 40 homes decorated with bright, cheerful Christmas lights and lawn decorations. The decorating process begins in early November and continues until this night. This is an annual celebration of the season and a

very popular holiday event. The local residents enjoy putting up the lights and yard decorations, and it really makes us feel great when the community supports the Salvation Army in this manner! Some of the decorations are simple, others quite complex, some use one color, others run the gamut of the rainbow colors. Most of the houses are connected with red rope lights that run down both sides of the street and with mail boxes topped with a snowflake. Please stop by and get the holiday season started!

All About Pumpkin Peels After a summer of harsh sun exposure, a pumpkin peel presents a gentle, soothing and hydrating solution to improve the texture of your skin. Pumpkin is rich in vitamin A and C, beta-carotene, potassium and zinc. It’s also loaded with antioxidants that help fight free radicals, as well as hydroxyl acids and natural enzymes that exfoliate and improve skin tone. Bonus: a

pumpkin peel is a refreshing and relaxing way to pamper yourself, which is never a bad thing. A pumpkin peel can reveal a smoother, more youthful complexion. When applied to the skin, the alpha hydroxy acids and beta hydroxy acids immediately get to work exfoliating dead cells and promoting the cell renewal process, which helps younger cells come to the surface. The result is a smoother, more taunt complexion that shaves years off your appearance. Contact the Corte Bella Day Spa at (623) 217-2018 to book your appointment. Hope to see you soon!

What’s Been Happening in Corte Bella? Linda Wright

Corte Bella Goes to Chase Field Wednesday, September 27 Corte Bella was well represented with 30 residents at the final home game of the Arizona Diamondbacks; they played the San Francisco Giants. The game’s outcome was decided in the 9th inning and the D’backs came away with a walk-off win. The baseball game trips this season were so enjoyed by Corte Bella folks; we can’t wait to do this again next year!

Corte Bella’s Annual Oktoberfest Buffet Wednesday, October 4 This annual October event was once again a delicious offering of German cuisine. A packed house in the Corte Bella Santa Barbara room dined and enjoyed the talented accordion player whose music helped to set the scene. The food was wonderful from salad to dessert.

Cooking with Chef Dan – Thai Cooking Friday, October 6

Cocktails and Canvas Class #9 Wednesday, September 20 Corte Bella’s budding artists and novices, both male and female, spent an enjoyable evening creating art under the expert guidance of Deb from MudPie Studios. Wonderful masterpieces were taken home after the class. Sipping champagne, snacking on fine cheese and fruit was just the inspiration needed for the 18 residents who joined the fun.

Chef Dan provided step-by-step instructions for creating some tasty Thai dishes during this well attended cooking class. The class, consisting of both men and women, enjoyed learning how to make and dine on beef pho, chicken satay, and sticky rice with mango.

Corte Bella’s Fall Festival Anacapa’s 10th Anniversary Monday, October 9

Corte Bella Sunday Cabaret with Bleu Passion Sunday, October 1 Fabulous bistro menu selections, great live music from the Bleu Passion band and beautiful table décor made for another very successful event at the Anacapa. The 80 residents who attended enjoyed everything. Another very successful cabaret is in the books.

At one of the most well attended events of the year, more than 300 residents toasted the 10th anniversary of the Anacapa’s operations, dined on amazing food, and danced to the wonderful live music of the Faded Jeans band. Multiple food stations scattered in and outside of the Social Hall and patio offered first-rate cuisine. The band engaged the dancers and provided excellent entertainment. The outside dance floor was packed full of our active adults having the time of their life here in Corte Bella. The weather was perfect. Corte Bella is ready for a busy social season.

HEALTH & FITNESS

Pickleball Carolyn Pakan Do you think you are too old to play pickleball? Age is not a restriction. Just ask Phil Glickman, Sharron Burke and Mike Burke, three of the Corte Bella Pickleball Club seniors. They’ll tell you age is not an issue. Phil is 76 years old and used to play basketball in school and racquetball as an adult. He was a manager for a business that produces plastic bags near his hometown of Skokie, IL. Then he and his wife, Natalie, decided to abandon the frigid north and come south to Arizona. They were drawn to Corte Bella by the newer homes and beautiful landscaping. Phil went to two of the Pickleball Club clinics and started playing in the evenings with a group of members. Now he plays seven days a week in the mornings, and he also uses the fitness center, takes a cycling class, and does line dancing. Phil plays year-round even in the summer heat, but looks forward to the players returning for the season. With the return of more players, there is extra time to rest between games and to socialize. His success can be attributed to practice and Phil Glickman playing for a year. He exhorts everyone to come out and try to play, even if they have some ailments. Sharron is 77 and had a career as an RN. She would have liked to play sports in school, but schools did not have organized sports for girls at that time. Mike, age 81, was an aerospace engineer. He wrestled in school. Both Sharron and Mike played tennis as adults. They left Rancho Cucamonga, CA to get away from the expensive and crowded area. Arizona was already a familiar place as they had lived in Chandler for 10 years. First they were in Trilogy, but moved to Corte Bella at the end of 2014 because they liked the smaller community and the fact that we had pickleball courts.

Golf Club News Debbie Parks-Dube November marks the beginning of another brand-new season at the Corte Bella Golf Club. Most of our seasonal members have come back from their summer adventures to enjoy another Arizona winter. Welcome back! Our leagues are gearing up for another great season. The Men’s Golf Association’s big fall tournament, the Ryder Cup, will be November 16th, 17th and 18th. It will be fun to see if the red team or the blue team comes out on top this year! The Women’s Golf Association will be having their annual Turkey Trot Tournament on November 21st this year. We have had many new members join

Mike and Sharron Burke Sharron and Mike learned to play pickleball at Trilogy. They saw people playing on the basketball court and asked how to play the game. They play in the evenings at Corte Bella 3-4 times a week all through the year. They prefer to play when the sun is down. They feel they are good players because of their tennis background, fellow players who are good teachers, and their never give up attitude. Sharron also likes playing cards and reading. Mike walks their dog four times a day. All three players, Phil, Mike, and Sharron, stress that they love to play pickleball for two main reasons: exercise and the camaraderie of fellow players. Between games there is plenty of time to visit with other players. Sharron and Mike appreciate that the better opponents ease up on their games to accommodate their level of play. Winning or losing is secondary. Everyone is out on the courts to have a good time. At Corte Bella, the players switch partners and opponents almost every game. We mix men and women, and different skill levels. So next time you see players out on the courts, stop by and say hello. We would be happy to teach you all about the game. And if you want to learn to play, ask someone on the courts, or come to our next pickleball clinics. They are November 18 and December 16. Come on out and have a ball.

over the summer that will be starting memberships in November! It is great to see all of the new faces and to see how wonderful and welcoming our members are to the new Corte Bella residents and members. The Corte Bella Golf Grill has a new menu! We will have grab-andgo breakfast items during the week with our popular full breakfast on Saturday and Sundays. We will also have new items on the lunch menu, plus a yummy happy hour menu from 5:00 -7:00 p.m. on Fridays. Please come in to enjoy what our restaurant has to offer. We have several membership options at the Golf Club so please stop in and see us if you are new to the area!
