ASSOCIATION

Enhanced Facility Access Policy As you may know, anyone using the pool, sport court complex or Fitness Center is required to check in at the Spa’s main desk prior to using the facilities. This applies to all association member homeowners, renters and guests and always has. There are three primary reasons for this policy. The first is so that staff is aware of capacity and who is in the facility. This helps to Mike Arrington, Corte Bella Country Club Association, Inc. General Manager

avoid reservation conflicts and is the primary control for enforcement of all other related rules. Secondly, all users are required to have a current waiver on file, prior to using the facilities. This is for liability and insurance reasons. The third reason is so staff can collect guest fees as currently required by the association’s governing documents. I have received reports from homeowners related to the enforcement or the lack thereof, regarding all three of the rules mentioned above. We cannot enforce what we are not aware of. There have been claims that some people are using the facilities that don’t live in the community which is an issue in and of itself. Homeowners paying the Annual Assessment to Corte Bella affords those owner’s rights that are not available to those who do not own a home in CB and don’t pay assessments. Additionally, I have received complaints that some are bringing guests to use the facilities and not paying guest fees. It’s the old “Why do I have to pay the fee for my guest when others don’t?” argument. A fair question to say the least and an issue that requires resolution on

the part of management. Lastly, there is the matter of whether or not a current waiver is on file with the association which is also an important matter and required. All three of the issues mentioned stem from some folks entering the facilities directly without checking in at the spa desk first. On a busy day, if someone enters the pool directly through one of the three exit gates (all clearly marked as such) without checking in at the spa desk first, it is very hard for the staff to know whether that person checked in or not, let alone whether any guests entered with them or if fees were collected. The same issue carries over to the tennis and pickle ball courts. The current system is and has been an honor system so there are ways to circumvent the system whether intentionally done or not. As you have probably found in life, there are always a few that spoil it for everyone. Currently, there is no staff permanently stationed at any of these facilities to monitor or control access except for the single control point at the spa desk. I don’t believe Corte Bella is the kind of place where someone that actually belongs in such a facility should be challenged or bothered when they have paid to use it and our staff has no interest in challenging anyone, only to find that person does have the right to be there. Often, that conversation does not typically result in a pleasant exchange and puts both the staff member and resident in an awkward position. Now that I have explained the “why’s” here is the “what;” in addition to the access controls already in place, we will soon be adjusting our entry control process to include hand stamps for all persons entering to use the facilities. This is intended to enable staff to more efficiently enforce the rules currently in place. All persons using the facilities will be required to have the back of their hand stamped so that people can easily be identified as someone who met all access requirements prior to entering. The stamp will be good for that entire day and the stamp will be unique to the day of the week. In other words, once you have been stamped for the day, you can come and go as you please for that day. When the staff does their hourly inspections of the area, if someone is using the facility without a stamp on their hand, the staff will easily be able to see that person did not enter the facility as required and that person will be asked by the staff to leave the area and check in at the spa desk per policy before reentering. All access into the pool area will be directed through the locker rooms as originally intended. Although some may find this change inconvenient as related to what they have become used to, the end result will ensure that only those who belong in the facilities are there, rules have been followed and that all are being treated fairly and equally. No one will be using the facility that you pay for that is not allowed to be here. There will be further communication on this matter as details are worked out prior to going into effect in early fall. Thank you in advance for your patience and participation in enabling the Corte Bella staff to do their jobs more effectively for your benefit.

Board Talk I hope everyone enjoyed the long hot summer. We look forward to seeing everyone return in the fall if you’ve been away. We didn’t have a regular Board meeting in August but your Board and Committees have been working on many things that will surely appeal to all of our residents. The next workshop will be on Saturday, 9/23 at 9:00 am and the Board meeting is Wednesday, 9/27 at 10:00 am. Last month, EPCOR made a presentation to over 140 residents on the current status of our new wastewater rates that became effective on 7/1/17. After more than three years of hearings and filings, the Arizona Corporation Michael McVeigh, President, Board of Directors Commission voted to approve consolidation of the five EPCOR wastewater districts. Everyone should have received direct communication by now from EPCOR on the phase-in rates over the next five years as our wastewater monthly rates will go from $71.16 - $38.98. This monthly reduction amounts to approximately $32.12 per household or $600K per year in savings to all Corte Bella residents after full implementation. Our GAC team, led by the Chairperson, Diane Smith, has done an outstanding job in leading this effort. Great teamwork! All of us appreciate your efforts on our behalf. We had ongoing Committee activity throughout the summer and the Board approved a purchase of the APS poles and bases after we purchase new LED lights to replace the current outdated lights. The Board also approved a letter of intent which was forwarded to APS to start the process. This will be a significant investment in our future and more details will be presented at the September meeting. Our Committee meetings, open to all residents, are announced by email and posted to our Corte Bella website. Try to attend as many as possible so you are informed of current projects and activities that affect us all. In fact, think about serving as a volunteer. By the way, the new website looks fantastic after some impressive upgrades and hard work by our Corte Bella website support team headed by Dave Wright. Some changes are cosmetic and ease of

operation has improved. Some impressive new features have been added. The 2018 Budget is a work in progress and will be presented to the Community and the Board of Directors by the Finance Committee at a special meeting on Tuesday, October 3, at 6:00 pm. Please plan to attend and invite a neighbor. It’s been just over one year since we added a new Lifestyle Manager and the feedback so far has been excellent. Many new events have been added to our lifestyle options and are the result of listening to our residents on what they want. Pam Lawrence’s original goal was “To take Corte Bella events to the next level.” I think she did just that! The Labor Day celebration is on September 4th and looks like it will be a great way to start off the fall. Doors open at 5:30 with entertainment by the Thaddeus Rose Duo. Our Community buildings have been newly painted and palm tree trimming is completed. Many other projects are being completed or in work. The Anacapa Advisory Committee is up and running and seeking ways to complement our Anacapa Management team. Please support our Anacapa restaurant. Your thoughts, opinions and concerns are very important to me as your Board President. Contact me, at any time, at mmcveigh3@cox.net/623-433-9921.

Father and Son: Anacapa Duo Barbara Morin You’ve just reached a milestone in your life and you want to celebrate that event by doing something special. A night out to dinner with a loved one or close friend is something you’ve been wanting to do for a long time. Let’s imagine, a restaurant that would be close, with good food, a superb wait staff and an atmosphere that would be delightfully suited to celebrating that special moment in your life. The residents here in Corte Bella don’t have a problem solving that dilemma. We’re so fortunate to have the Anacapa restaurant in our community. A restaurant that serves up a variety of savory dishes and a specialty bar that offers a select wine list or your favorite beverage. Frank Bellanova is a long-time employee of the Anacapa and is currently working as a server. Frank is unique, in that, his son,

Peter, works alongside him as a father/ son duo. They moved here from Murrieta, California where Frank worked at a Frisco’s Restaurant. Working in a restaurant environment has always appealed to Frank. He said, “It means the world to me to see my guests smile after presenting them with their meal.” He admires Chef Dan for his ability to effectively communicate to all the Anacapa personnel. His son, Peter, came to the Anacapa after being inspired by his father. He’s been here one year working as an expeditor. Like his father, he delights in seeing his guests smiling and enjoying their food. Outside of work, Peter enjoys the outdoors and is pursuing a Master’s degree in Organizational Leadership at Grand Canyon University. At some point in his life he wants to “marry that special someone and raise a family.” On your next occasion, whether it’s achieving a milestone or just a simple lunch or dinner away from home, the Anacapa restaurant will suit your needs. Oh, and please take time to introduce yourself to Frank and Peter. I’m confident it will inspire them and other Anacapa employees. As Frank said earlier, “It would mean the world to them.”

One Year On the Job

A Conversation with Pam Lawrence, Corte Bella’s Lifestyle Manager By Linda Wright with Pam Lawrence Shortly after reaching her 1-year anniversary (July 18th) as Lifestyle Manager for Corte Bella, Pam Lawrence answered some questions regarding her past 12 months on the job. Congratulations on reaching this milestone. How would you best describe the past 12 months of your work here in this community? “The best words I can use to describe the past year are rewarding, challenging and successful. These words sum up my evaluation of the year.” What has been the most satisfying for you during the past year? “I’ve been so fortunate to have the best team to work with here at Corte Bella that I’ve ever encountered during my employment with FirstService (our management company). Also, the wonderful volunteers who make my job so much easier and less stressful are a blessing. I really appreciate the balance that exists between the official employee and the generous people of this community. I have to say that I’ve been so pleased with the success of the events that the residents like and I love watching their enjoyment.” How would you describe your goals for the past year and have you been able to accomplish the goals you had when you began working in this position? “I came into this job with an open mind knowing there would be challenges. I knew I had to develop, plan and execute the right kind of events and activities to fit the demographics of this community. I had to figure out what would work and what would not work. For the most part, I feel I have accomplished my goals.” Nothing in life is perfect. What has frustrated you in the past 12 months and how do you intend to approach this in the future? Can you fix those issues? “My biggest frustration was canceling an event due to lack

of participation. Also, as internal changes occurred with responsibilities for certain traditional community events, there were real challenges required to make sure events would succeed. Working within the approved budget to bring quality entertainment and establish a fair ticket price has been challenging and a matter of trial and error. But this experience has provided statistics I can use going forward.” How do you get the pulse of the community? What tools do you use to gauge interest and identify potential events/ programs for the future? “I’m finding my monthly 1st Friday’s with Pam coffee chats are extremely useful for gaining feedback, suggestions and fielding questions from the community. Additionally, I have a great deal of personal interaction with residents as well as email exchanges. My office door is always open to residents as well.” What are your dreams and your hopes for Corte Bella? What can the residents look forward to that will be new and different? “I hope to continue to encourage residents to embrace changes that I bring to lifestyle activities and events. I will continue to provide a variety of live musical entertainment (bands, etc.), have less repetitive events, use different venues for events and “keep it new.” It is essential that residents participate and support events to the best of their ability.” How can you in your position contribute to life learning experiences both inside and outside the gates of Corte Bella? “It’s my intention to offer museum trips, theater experiences, historical excursions and other cultural/artistic experiences in the area. I’m also exploring a series of speakers with a wide variety of subject matter expertise.” What would you say to new residents of Corte Bella when they ask how to get involved in community life? “I’m always recommending that new residents join one of the various volunteer committees and check out the many interest groups and clubs that function here. I also encourage them to go to our events and to be sure to attend the 1st Friday’s with Pam coffee chats. I stress that new residents attend the welcome coffee or happy hour they are invited to attend. I suggest they go to the Anacapa Happy Hours on Tuesday and Thursdays. I encourage them to volunteer and use the amenities (pool, gym and sport courts) so they can find others who share the same interests.”

20 | CB Times | The Official Community Magazine of Corte Bella

What is the importance of volunteers in our community and to your position especially? “To me, volunteers are the core of this community. It’s so gratifying to see the time and talent that people bring to so many aspects of Corte Bella. I enjoy watching the passion they put into so many things. Events here at Corte Bella depend on volunteers to succeed. It’s not possible for me to do it all by myself. I need volunteers to help decorate, collect tickets, bring creative ideas to my planning and help with coordinating an event.”

If you are looking for a Strong Advocate for all your Real Estate needs, call Karen whether you are interested in Buying or Selling.

How do you see your position supporting interest groups and clubs of Corte Bella? “I feel I can help or support these groups with logistical support and management so they have what is needed for a successful event if they are using association facilities. I’m also available to discuss how to use the website, special bulletin boards or the magazine to promote and sustain their group. At our 1st Friday’s with Pam coffee chats, interest group coordinators are always welcome to come and talk about their club or group.”

If you could sum up your personal philosophy for life, what would you say? “Be happy with yourself. Be kind and enjoy life to the fullest every day.”

Property Values and You: The Importance of Maintenance Architectural Review Committee This, the fifth article in a series on the Design Guidelines, discusses the maintenance of your property as we are seeing a number of instances of homeowners’ neglecting this important task. Although knowing and adhering to a myriad of rules may at times seem onerous, the rules exist to help keep our property values up. Any perspective homebuyer is naturally attracted to a neighborhood that is pristine and whose pride is showing. Most of us want to be a part of such a community. There are several areas in the Design Guidelines that reference the requirements of all homeowners to maintain their property. Specifically, this can take the form of removing rubbish or weeds from yard; trimming and pruning trees & plantings; cleaning paved surfaces; and painting from time to time. One such guideline states that no plant that may grow over four (4) feet in height may be planted in your setbacks. Every lot has a five (5) foot setback around the entire perimeter of the lot. Plants growing on the fences or between houses must maintain a fourfoot height. Additionally, they may not form a hedge. Flowers or shrubs growing on your five-foot high fence and intertwining with each other may look lovely but unfortunately our guidelines do not allow for this. Failure to maintain your paint in good condition can also lessen the look of a neighborhood and thus lower your property values.

This does not mean that you need to repaint your house every year. Garage doors and mailboxes often take the brunt of our hot and sunny weather and need extra attention. Maintaining these two items can go a long way to improving the presentation of our community. As everyone is aware, failure to maintain your property will result in an HOA violation notice. Please do not take this as a personal affront. The HOA employees are simply doing their job, which is what we as a community have asked the property management company to do. Please be courteous and respectful of their position. If you feel you have a legitimate reason for maintaining your property in some manner, please discuss your grievances in a friendly and professional manner with the HOA staff. Although noncompliance is a violation of the CC&Rs, not the direct responsibility of the ARC, you may always request a review of your position from the ARC and request a variance, but please remember you need to show a hardship to maintain your property in a manner not consistent with the guidelines. Just because you prefer it that way or the house down the street does it, does not constitute a variance. Please know that we are all homeowners too and take our roles to heart, and our goal is always to act in the best interest of the community. The Design Guidelines are meant to keep our community beautiful and, in turn, our property values high. You play an indispensable role in that – the power of one to make a difference.

What Just Happened? Steve DeBoer, NASC Member Recently a number of residents have expressed an interest in being notified about any incidents which may occur on or near Corte Bella properties. In order to assure residents get accurate information (albeit somewhat limited) and are not victims of the rumor mill, we recommend using the LexisNexis website. The website can be found online at: http://www.communitycrimemap. com/, a link to this website will also be posted on our website. The information used in this database is provided by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s office and other government agencies. By using this database, residents can see what is going on in the community and get accurate information about incidents as reported by local government agencies. As with any database, you need to make sure the filters are properly selected to get the data you desire (area, date range, type of incident, etc.). The

website can also provide daily e-mail updates of incidents in our area. The update is based on the address provided and can be limited by a “buffer” to include only incidents in our immediate area (500 feet to a 5 mile radius) and any other filters that are selected. If a comparison is made between Corte Bella and surrounding communities it becomes apparent that we do indeed live in a very safe community. I am glad to see fellow residents express an interest in staying informed about our community and surrounding areas. Staying informed and understanding the risks allows us to keep our community safe while maintaining the open and inviting atmosphere which makes Corte Bella such an outstanding place to live.

Anacapa Advisory Group Joel Piaskowski In an effort to continue Corte Bella’s reputation as “The Jewel of the West Valley,” your Board of Directors recently authorized the establishment of the Anacapa Advisory Group (AAG). According to HOA Board member liaison Dan Luparello, “The establishment by resolution of an Anacapa Advisory Group was approved by the Board of Directors to continue the success of the “ad hoc” marketing team efforts that have resulted in a 20% increase in customer volume over the last few years.”

COMMUNITY

Your Donations Put to Work Larry Leighton, President CB Vets Thanks again to the residents of Corte Bella and friends of Veterans who have supported Corte Bella Vets for the last three plus years! With your help, we raised and donated over $100,000 to needy Arizona Veterans and Veterans’ Families! When you ate at the Panda Express at Happy Valley and Lake Pleasant on May 19th, Panda Express donated 20% of what you spent to help our mission. Tom Asmussen presented a Certificate of Appreciation from the Corte Bella Vets to Jonathan Escalera, Panda Express Restaurant Manager and some of his staff for their support. The funds we raise go to help other organizations supporting Veterans in Arizona. You can learn more about these organizations on our website (http://cortebellavets.org). We also support individual Veterans that find themselves in need of some temporary assistance – a hand up, not a hand out. Soldier’s Best Friend (https://soldiersbestfriend.org/) focuses on helping Veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). They adopt dogs from area shelters and after some initial training, partner them up with a Veteran. The dog and the Veteran then have some training as a team focused on the Veterans’ specific needs. This year, the Corte Bella Vets donated $4,000 to Soldiers Best Friend to “adopt a dog and a Veteran” and pay all the expenses involved in their training. Horse Rhythm Foundation (https://www.facebook.com/ horserhythm/) also treats Veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) with Equine Therapy. Our $3,000 donation helps them complete their mission by paying for horse food, shoes, and medical supplies. The Heritage Traditions here in Sun City West is the home of over one hundred Veterans. One of the amenities they use extensively is a community computer. When Denny Fossey learned the one

Corte Bella Vets Sponsor Honor Flights Dale Huffman This spring, the Corte Bella Vets organization was privileged to sponsor two deserving veterans for Honor Flight Arizona trips to Washington, D.C. In April, Jerry Kilbourn, a veteran of WW II and in May, Corte Bella resident and veteran of the Korean War, Tom Snively, were accompanied by their guardians and other volunteer staff from Honor Flight Arizona. On their three-day odyssey to our nation’s capital, they visited memorials dedicated to their military service and witnessed the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. Both traveled with a group of about thirty other vets. Beginning with their departure from Sky Harbor Airport and at each

location they visited during the trip, veterans were greeted with spontaneous applause and salutes from the crowds. It was a moving experience both for the veterans as well as the volunteers and guardians privileged to accompany them on their journey of commemoration, reminiscence, and reflection. The Honor Flight program regularly takes WW II and Korean War veterans to Washington as an expression of thanks for their military service. There is no cost to the veterans and the program is supported by public donations. Corte Bella Vets has set aside funds to sponsor qualified veterans. Anyone wishing to contribute to this program or obtain additional information may visit

Corte Bella Adventure Group Steve Downing As we get closer to fall, we begin looking forward to cooler temperatures and the return of our northern friends. Each fall we have a reuniting of our northern friends with those of us brave enough to stay through the Valley summer. It also means we are ready for another season of hiking and its perks: the incredible views, fresh air, sounds of nature and the camaraderie that occurs during this experience. According to WebMD, hiking is a powerful cardio workout that can: •

Lower your risk of heart disease

Improve blood pressure and blood sugar levels

Boost bone density as hiking is a weight bearing exercise

Build strength in your glutes, quadriceps, hamstrings, and the muscles in your hips and lower legs

Strengthen your core

Improve balance

Help control your weight – hiking burns up to 370 calories per hour for a 154 lb person

Boost your mood; according to Gregory Miller PhD. research shows hiking has a positive impact on combating symptoms of stress and anxiety. Being in nature is ingrained in our DNA.

Improves your sleep quality

Getting yourself ready: Head for the Hills – While in the gym, bump up the treadmill to a 5% or 10% incline. According to Miller, this will equal a 30% to 40% increase in calorie burn. Walk the CB Circle – Take your day hydration pack and add an additional liter of water beyond your pack’s capacity. Over the summer we added a Corte Bella Adventure Group Facebook page. Through our page, members can share their individual photos of their hikes and adventures. It has been fun to see member’s posts and pictures which has created additions to my personal To Hike list. Also scheduled this year is our first ever hot air evening balloon ride with candlelight hors d’oeuvres. I admit I’m a little tentative on this event. The jury is still out on whether I am taking the balloon ride or waiting for the group to get back and join them for the hors doeuvres. If you are interested in joining the Corte Bella Adventure Group, please contact me, Steve Downing, at 937-684-1733.

The Wind in Our Hair and Music in Our Ears Nancy Wendler On Saturday, July 8th, the Drop Toppers traveled to Mesa, Arizona for dinner at Organ Stop Pizza, home of The Mighty Wurlitzer. Organ Stop’s Mighty Wurlitzer is one of the largest and finest theater organs in the world today. Its nearly 6000 pipes, numerous percussions, and countless traps are masterfully presented by The Musical Staff who are world class musicians. Organ Stop offers pizza, pasta, a salad bar and beverages for dinner every night of the week. It is a great place to take friends and family.

If you would like to join the Corte Bella Drop Toppers (convertible owners) on future outings, please contact Nancy Wendler at njwendler@msn.com. We have over 100 convertibles registered; membership is free, and we are looking for new members.

The Sun City West Posse Needs YOU! Bob Carneiro, Commander The Sheriff’s Posse of Sun City West, along with many other volunteer organizations in this area, are experiencing the same problem of new retirees not signing up to volunteer. We need your help and we are asking residents of Corte Bella to assist in keeping this area one of the safest places to reside in the United States. Because the residents of Corte Bella shop, bank, visit doctors, dentists, Banner Del Webb Hospital, and certainly drive through the business area, we are asking for your assistance in joining the Posse. We have several residents of Corte Bella who are presently a part of the SCW Posse and have been for some time. They are a great asset to the Posse and work hard to assist the community and deputies of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO). Our

goal, if we are able to increase our ranks substantially, would be to provide limited services in Corte Bella beginning with responding to fire and medical calls and conducting welfare checks (wellbeing) at the request of neighbors, spouses and relatives from out of town. These services are conducted to assist the Sheriff’s Office and most are resolved without needing a deputy. When a deputy is required, we call and they respond very quickly knowing that the Posse has conducted the preliminary assessment. If you have a valid driver’s license, live in Corte Bella, are willing to take the required training, can pass a background check and are able to work four six hour shifts per month (morning, noon or evening), please stop at the Posse and talk to our recruiting officer. The Posse headquarters is located at 12450 Stardust Blvd at the corner of RH Johnson Blvd. and Stardust Blvd. Like Uncle Sam used to say….WE NEED YOU!

Tour of the Musical Instrument Museum June 24, 2017

Beautiful decorations in red, white and blue provided a wonderful backdrop for Corte Bella to celebrate our nation’s birthday in style. Many in attendance were dressed in patriotic colors which added to the beautiful event. The Faded Jeans band provided wonderful dancing music and the Anacapa served a delicious traditional 4th of July holiday buffet.

A group of Corte Bella residents enjoyed a personal tour of this amazing museum in Phoenix that contains over 6,500 instruments from around the world. 1st Friday with Pam HOA Board of Directors’ Meeting July 26, 2017

The monthly meeting of the Corte Bella HOA Board of Directors on July 26 was a very important one that focused mainly on the street light APS buyout proposal. The dedication of volunteers both on the Board of Directors and within the many various committees that work behind the scenes, is very inspiring as well as reassuring. The daily operations of Corte Bella are functioning at a high level. Our community and its assets are being well managed.

August 4, 2017

Every month on the 1st Friday, Corte Bella’s Lifestyle Manager, Pam Lawrence, meets with all interested residents to pass along information regarding upcoming events and activities. Also, the HOA General Manager, Mike Arrington, attends these informal “town meetings” to bring attention to various aspects of community business and to answer questions from residents. Mr. Arrington presented Jill Machay as the newly appointed Assistant Food and Beverage manager for the Anacapa. Pam discussed the many and varied events coming for the rest of the summer months and into the Fall season. A great door prize was presented to a lucky resident in attendance.

EPCOR Wastewater Consolidation Educational Meeting

On a very warm Friday night, 41 Corte Bella baseball fans rode a brand new “All Aboard America” chartered bus into Phoenix to watch the reigning World Series Champions Chicago Cubs take on the Arizona Diamondbacks. Good seats, ball park food and the great company of friends and neighbors all added up to a very enjoyable baseball experience – even for those who were not on the winning side.

July 31, 2017

Corte Bella’s Social Hall hosted an informational meeting from the water company, EPCOR regarding the June 28 wastewater consolidation decision handed down by the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC). Decision 76162 on June 28th approved new wastewater rates and consolidation of the EPCOR wastewater districts. A presentation by EPCOR’s CEO provided background and detailed information about the phased in rate structure that will after five years have all customers paying the same rate for wastewater charges.

Pickleball: Court #5 Resurfaced Robin Mandell

Current membership: 189 September is finally here, and we are looking forward to welcoming back our fellow Pickleball Club members that traveled over the summer. And what a welcome back! In June, court #5 was resurfaced with four pickleball courts - including the official “kitchen” area - in addition to the one tennis court. The pickleball courts look great, and our members and guests have enjoyed playing on them the last two months. A brief history of what transpired: •

Court #5 was originally striped only for tennis.

A formal Pickleball Club was established in 2012, ending the year with a total of 63 members. In five years membership has exploded to our current enrollment of 189, reflecting a nation-wide growth trend of this very popular sport. We needed more courts to accommodate everyone.

In 2014, pickleball court lines were added onto court #5, and use of the court was shared equally with the tennis and pickleball clubs.

both the tennis and pickleball clubs, with temporary nets for the pickleball courts put up on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. There is a lot to look forward to this fall with Pickleball: •

Clinics for beginners and more advanced levels

Tournaments, both local and in-house

Social events

We’ll see friends old and new out on all 8 courts soon.

This June the courts were repainted for better optics on the pickleball courts. Use of court #5 will still be shared with

Women’s Competitive Tennis Teams MaryLee Planer The Corte Bella Tennis Club is home to three competitive women’s teams at three different levels of play: 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0. The season begins in mid-October and runs through March. The 3.0 team, newly named the “Wildflowers,” is co-captained by Gayle Backes and Mary Jane Schneider. Team members also include Mamie Roberts, Mitsie Sagness, Karen Schmidt, Sara Cranston, MaryLee Planer, Elaine Weber, Sarah Smith and Gail Mattson. Other teams in the league include Happy Trails, Trilogy, Pebble Creek, Sun City West and Sun City Grand. According to the United States Tennis Association (USTA), 3.0 players are consistent when hitting medium-paced shots and have some strokes that can be hit accurately when aiming for directional control, depth and pace. At this level, doubles play is typically one up, one back. The 3.5 team, captained by Linda Briggs with co-captain Robin Culley, includes Elaine Uhren, Julie Embleton, Marya Butler, Colleen Miller, Jolene Piaskowski, Kathy Moody, Vicki Faaborg, Gloria Kerszykowski, Jan Harris, Karen Watkins, and Ming Fu. Play at the 3.5 level is characterized by stroke dependability with a number of shots such as lobs, overheads, approaches and volleys. In addition, players at this level are more comfortable

at the net, have improved court awareness and are developing doubles teamwork. Donna Norton is captain of the 4.0 team that includes Corte Bella residents Mary Nasca and Ann Paulson. Donna reports that she is actively seeking and recruiting additional team members and adds, “I am SO hoping that tennis players new to Corte Bella in the last six months will give serious consideration to joining our team – I would love to talk to them about it!” Play at the 4.0 level is characterized by dependable strokes with directional control and the ability to alter depth of shots on both forehand and backhand sides. Players are able to use lobs, overheads, approaches and volleys with consistent success. Serves at this level of play may force opponents to error on their return shots. Tennis players at any level are welcome to join the CBTC. Dues are just $15 annually. For more information, see the tennis court bulletin board.

Great Golfing and New Menu Specials Debbie Parks-Dube Hello Corte Bella Residents. It’s quiet around the club with many of our members away for the summer and others taking fun trips. We continue to have new resident move to the community and join the club. We are running some very good membership specials, so now is a good time to come in and check us out. If you are not a golfer, you are still welcome to come in for lunch and or cocktails any day of the week. Plus, we have breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays. We have been running a Just Enough special on Mondays that has been popular for members and residents. The Monday Just Enough special is a cheeseburger or hotdog with a bag of potato chips and a 10 oz draft beer for $6.50. We have a new Taco Tuesday special that started in August. Your choice of fish, chicken or ground beef tacos served with flour tortilla chips and salsa for $7.50. Along with regular league play for our men’s and lady’s groups, the Men’s Golf Association member/member is on September 8th and 9th.

Congratulations to John Turyn for getting another Hole in One! This time it was August 3rd with a five iron from 185 yards on number 8. I think he posted a nice 69 that day too. Way to go John! I hope everyone is having a great summer!
