ASSOCIATION

Word to the Wise The Corte Bella Country Club Association has several fantastic sources of communication and information. For instance, the one you are now reading is one of the best HOA sources of information and communication I have ever seen. If you really look at it closely from cover to Mike Arrington, General Manager cover, you can find just about anything you want to know related to whom to contact for specific needs, event dates and times, activity schedules, human interest stories, etc. Most HOA periodicals are two to three page newsletters and pale in comparison to the CB Times. In addition, there are some really great volunteers overseeing the process and development of the CB Times. It really is a great thing to have on your coffee table or at least right where you can find it if you need to know something about the association. Another great source of information is the Corte Bella website (cortebella.net). The website has recently been updated and has a great new look and new features. This source contains all of the association’s governing documents, meeting minutes, financial reports, etc. There is a classified section where one can buy or sell things just like in the newspapers we all depended on at one time. Another feature is a discussion group portion of the website where you can communicate with other residents about all kinds of different things from who to call to for home repairs to where you had dinner last night. This section is broken down

8 | CB Times | The Official Community Magazine of Corte Bella

into different topics for ease in locating what you want to know or talk about. However, one word of caution; there is a policy attached to using the discussion group section that you should be aware of before commenting. This policy can also be found on the website. The discussion group is monitored but not edited. All posts are direct without interference from management. The discussion group is designed that way so that residents can comment within reason. Beware that a lot of what you read on the discussion group is opinion and not always factual. Although the association is aware of this, the point is to allow free speech amongst the residents within reasonable parameters. Just know that everything you read is not always true and sometimes can be meant to be hurtful to another person. If a post does not comply with the policy, it can be taken down and occasionally is. As usual, there is also some resident produced information being circulated around the community that is, in fact, inaccurate. As a word of caution, be careful with what you hear and read at times. Always question the source. The best source and most factual, is word of mouth from those who actually know. Remember the old saying, “Those who know, don’t talk and those who talk, don’t know”. If you have a question about something you hear or read and want to know what the real story is, go to the source and speak with the General Manager. My door is open most of the time and no appointment is necessary. Of course, there are some things that cannot be shared because of a personal nature and legal implications. However, I would much rather you hear the truth and know the facts than only the “hear say”. That said, the association is always trying to improve communication with the residents and will continue to do so.

Board Talk CB Times July/August 2018 The elections, the organizational meeting and the board vacancy appointments are now behind us. As of the date of this article, our 2018/2019 Corte Bella board members are: Michael McVeigh – Reelected Paul Knowles – Reelected David Saulnier – Newly elected Kathy Carmickle - Appointed Michael Koshay - Appointed Steve Michaud - Appointed Debra Raeder-Gay – Appointed Michael McVeigh, CBCCA HOA Board President

Left to right, Paul Knowles, Michael Koshay, Kathy Carmickle, Michael McVeigh, Debra Raeder-Gay, Steve Michaud, and David Saulnier

The four appointed Directors will all serve out the unexpired terms of the four Directors that resigned in May. We issued a call for candidates to fill the unexpired terms and received thirteen (13) interest forms and resumes from residents.

new Board members. I also want to thank all of the candidates that expressed interest in serving our community and hope you will stay interested in Committee or other volunteer positions available.

According to our Director Election Policies and Procedures, Revision A, vacancies can be filled by the Board for the remainder of the term. The appointed directors were scheduled to complete all required background check, liquor license approvals and Director training. They were scheduled to be seated at the June 27th Open Board meeting. Officer and Board Liaison assignments to all of our Committees were also scheduled to be addressed at this meeting.

Summer is here and the temperatures are already above triple digits. My weekly tee times are moving from mid-day to 8 am. Rates are also coming down. We had over 50 attendees at the last Welcome Committee gathering. I continue to hear that people bought here because of the beauty, solid financial condition and the various amenities we offer to all. Please take some time to review the April 2018 YTD financials included in this publication. Our community is in sound financial condition and this is attributable to many talented volunteers that have dedicated their time and talent for many years. I hope everyone is noticing our new Anacapa Restaurant menu. Many Anacapa customers have asked for an expanded casual menu – well, you got it! Thanks to Chef Dan Haywood and Food & Beverage Manager Jill Machay for your creative genius in making this happen. There are many new items to choose from including gluten free items. The Anacapa Advisory Group (AAG) is doing an outstanding job in leading the success of our Food and Beverage amenity.

Left to right, Michael Koshay, Kathy Carmickle, Debra RaederGay, and Steve Michaud Announcements of their appointments and brief biographies of each new Director were sent out to the community in late May. All have impressive qualifications, a commitment to our community and a willingness to serve Corte Bella. Please plan on attending our upcoming Workshop and Open meetings and meet your

The 2019 Budget Guidance was presented to the Board at the June meeting and the actual budget process will be completed before we know it. Our GM and Finance Committee volunteers will be hard at work to ensure we continue to provide the very best “Value” to our community. Our next scheduled meeting will be the Workshop on July 20, at 9:00 am. Our next scheduled Board meeting will be on July 25, at 10:00 am. All residents are welcome and encouraged to attend. Your thoughts, opinions, and concerns are very important to me as your Board President. Contact me, anytime, at mmcveigh3@ cox.net or 623-433-9921.

Summary: Corte Bella continues to show a surplus as compared to the year-to-date budget projections. This is not unexpected as many line item expenses are annualized equally or are estimated at best assumptions using prior year experience. Accordingly, some expenses are over or under year-to-date due primarily to timing. Over the year the expense items tend to balance out to budget projections. Our seasonal residents provide for higher volume usages of our many amenities such as the Anacapa Food & Beverage operation including HOA Events. In the upcoming months actual performance numbers will become closer in line with the budget numbers. Contrary to recent fictional emails circulating within the community, Corte Bella and the Anacapa remain financially very strong. Fifty (50) percent of your assessment dollars are clearly not going to support the Anacapa. As clearly stated in the 2018 Financial Audit, not allocating individual expenses such as utilities, management, information technology, etc. to specific operational areas is due to the difficulty in determining accurate allocation methods, and is common practice in the Common Interest Realty Association Industry.

Track or Street? Steve DeBoer, Corte Bella Neighborhood Awareness and Safety Committee (NASC) Two safety issues seem to boil-up here in Corte Bella on a regular basis. First, people like to use our streets instead of our sidewalks for walking, running or jogging thereby creating a dangerous situation not only for themselves but for those driving on our streets. If this practice was not dangerous enough; some residents walk on the same side of the street as the traffic flow (which means they cannot see approaching vehicles) while others run down the center of our streets with their heads down and earpieces in place, virtually assuring they will not see or hear oncoming traffic. When asked why they are in the street instead of on the sidewalk, the answer I get is that running/walking on the asphalt is easier on their feet/joints than the concrete. While this may seem like a reasonable assumption, it is actually not supported by any convincing data. A person can do far more to reduce wear and tear on their body by simply buying a good fitting quality shoe designed for their exercise regimen. Next is a link that might shed some additional light on this subject and maybe get you to think twice about the perceived benefits

of running in the street. Remember, streets are for cars and sidewalks are for people. https://www.slowtwitch.com/Training/Running/Concrete_or_ Asphalt__4793.html The other issue I need to once again bring to my fellow residents attention is speeding! While I am sure that at some time or other we are all guilty of inadvertently exceeding the limit (which is 25 MPH on all Corte Bella streets), my concern is those folks who are either oblivious to the fact that we have speed limits or worse, those who do not care. Too often I and other NASC committee members are told about speeding situations which are not only dangerous but could end in tragedy. To help address this problem, reminders have been communicated through our various community outlets and a speed monitoring device was purchased to help give drivers real time feedback on their speed. Resident suggestions to address this situation range from installing speed humps/bumps to adding traffic cameras to identify speeders and levy fines against those chronic abusers. I hope that we as responsible adults can conduct ourselves in a reasonable manner and avoid remedies which some would consider draconian. Please remember our Corte Bella streets are just that: streets, not race tracks.

Corte Bella Vets News – Upcoming Events Karen Starkman, Secretary CB Vets Group Have you been wondering what the CB Vets have been doing during the summer? Some of the members have gone back to their summer homes or are taking a well-deserved summer vacation, and others have decided to stay in the Arizona summer heat. Wherever we may be, we have been “busy bees” planning various events in our continuing effort to support our local Veterans throughout Arizona. Please join us for our second annual “Walk Around the Circle” on September 11, Patriots Day, to remember those who lost their lives on 9/11/2001.

Another give back day has been arranged with the Surprise BBW (Buffalo Wild Wings) (13882 W. Bell Road) for October 5th. BWW will donate 10% of their total sales for that day to the CB Vets, so please come on out and support this tasty event. On October 27, CB Vets will be sponsoring a dance fundraiser in our Corte Bella social hall featuring our very own CB resident, Keith Fowler as our DJ. Even if you don’t dance come on out and listen to the music in support of our Veterans (ticket price is $15 per person.) Tickets will be sold during Happy Hour every Tuesday and Thursday from October 2nd thru October 25th. Once again the CB Vets will be “Adopting a Platoon”, whereby we will be stuffing and sending Christmas Stockings to our Troops oversees. Please begin to gather up toiletries, snacks, books, puzzles, magazines, etc. for this wonderful communitywide event. Last year, the Corte Bella Community came out and stuffed 128 Christmas Stockings which were sent to our troops stationed in Afghanistan. Lastly, the CB Vets have partnered up with the Sundome Plaza Merchants Association in Support of their Angel Tree for Veterans Program, to collect Christmas presents for our local Veterans. Two Christmas Trees will be placed in front of plaza businesses, located at 13519 W. Camino Del Sol in Sun City West, from November 1 – December 15, 2018. Please stop by and pick up a tag or two. Your generosity will go a long way in making the holidays extra special for our veterans. This year gifts will be distributed by the CB Vets to Mary Ellen’s Place (home for Women Veterans in Phoenix); the VA Community Center in Phoenix; and the Northern Arizona VA Hospital in Prescott. Please watch for future CB articles, fliers, and resident e-mail blasts regarding all of these events.

World War II Vets Share Stories Stacey McEnnan Did you ever wonder what really happened in World War II? What were the personal stories from those involved? On Sunday, April 29 of this year, the community found out. Several WWII veterans, including Corte Bella residents Hugo Tringali and Gaylen Luher (speaking for her father’s first wife, a Fly Girl, who was killed in action), told their stories at a very special event organized by Corte Bella residents Stacey McEnnan and Evie Hansen from The Alexandria Academy, a national private school. The event was co-organized and moderated by Desiree Luethy, who runs The Alexandria Academy in Los Angeles. Corte Bella residents Larry Leighton, Sharon Vanderlende, Emilie Tipton, and Al Luher also helped by contacting vets, transporting and sharing memorabilia. Larry Leighton’s help with contacting vets was indispensable. hide during the day and attack bridges, railroads and other strategic targets during the night. All recalled where they were when the war was declared over. The afternoon was also attended by many local Alexandria Academy students. Audience members, old and young, were mesmerized by the stories told, and the students kept the vets occupied after the end of the event with their questions and the opportunity to have their pictures taken with our heroes. The proceedings were live-streamed on Facebook and watched by an international audience, some as far away as India. Also, students from many states, including New Jersey, South Carolina and Florida, called their questions into our live forum. Bringing history to life for all members of the community and appreciation for the sacrifices of our veterans were the primary reasons behind this event. If audience reaction is any indication, the afternoon was a huge success. Among laughter and many tears, the event closed with the singing of the popular song, “I’m Proud to be an American.” The afternoon began with a sing-along of patriotic songs to the music of Joyce Rader on the piano. After that, the veterans shared their personal stories of the war and the hardships they endured. Many people also brought WWII memorabilia which was on display for the duration of the program. Items such as uniforms, medals, letters, pamphlets, and ration tickets, among others, were examined and reminisced about by all who attended. During this process, many other stories were remembered and shared. Hugo Tringali endured the coldest German winter on record, that of 1944, in the Herken Forest. He shared in amazing and accurate detail how he and his comrades dug through thick snow, laid their sleeping bags on the ground, covered themselves with snow and tree branches for warmth, and tried to sleep. “K rations”, eaten cold, were their daily meals; they couldn’t be heated as smoke would have revealed their locations. Jack Record, a diminutive man, spent his four years behind enemy lines, alone. He would

A follow-up is planned, which will include a cooking competition based on World War II ration coupons. Local students will join with Corte Bella residents to make meals for a family of four using only ingredients available to citizens during the 30’s and 40’s, considering both coupon availability and cost. The event will take place early in the fall. (If this type of event would be of interest to others in the future, please contact The Alexandria Academy through Stacey McEnnan at smcennan@gmail.com for additional information.) Editor’s note: Hugo Tringali passed away on Thursday, May 17th at 10:15 AM. Corte Bella will miss him and his amazing stories. Thank you, Hugo, for your service to our country.

Corte Bella Pool Maintenance An Interview with “Cisco” Tober Tom Morin and Evie Hansen Among the great amenities we have in Corte Bella is the pool and outside spa. It’s certainly the place to be when our summer temperatures climb into the three digits. Residents enjoy our pool for a variety of reasons. Some people go just to relax and read a good book while others enjoy the social aspect of meeting people. Most people agree that attending our pool was how they met most of their friends. There are still others who go just to get their daily exercise by swimming in the lap lanes. The pool is a wonderful amenity we have in CB and certainly an impressive sight for anyone visiting from outside our community. Residents often ask me who maintains the pool to keep it looking so beautiful and magnificent? Is it our facilities personnel or is it an outside contractor? The answer to that question is quite simple! Francisco Tober of our Facilities Department has the sole responsibility of the maintenance of the pool. “Cisco”, as he prefers to be called, has the responsibility of ensuring our pool is clean and meets satisfactory standards in chlorine, alkalinity and Ph levels. This procedure is performed on a daily basis. People have often asked if the pool is treated with chlorine or salt. Cisco said it’s treated with chlorine, and the inside jacuzzies utilize the salt treatment. He’s also responsible for ensuring all our fountains are maintained and cleaned on a regular basis. Cisco was born and raised right here in the Phoenix valley. He attended Dysart High School. He’s held several jobs before coming here to Corte Bella six years ago. He was assigned directly to maintenance of the pool. Three years ago he married his high school sweetheart and they live not far from here. Cisco has Sundays and Mondays off, and for pleasure they enjoy driving up north taking in all the scenery that Arizona has to offer. They love going to Lake Pleasant for the day or go hiking on the numerous trails we have around the valley. Cisco would also like to remind everyone of the hours of operation and some of the rules when attending the pool. Children are permitted between 10:00 A.M. and 1:00 P.M. and 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Alcoholic beverages are strictly forbidden. No sitting or pulling of lap lane ropes when people are trying to swim. Remember those lanes are for anyone who wants to swim laps. When finished swimming, please be respectful of others who wish to do the same. It became very obvious to me why most people didn’t know who maintained our pool. Cisco starts work at 5:00 A.M., when most of us are still sleeping. His typical day is complete when the majority of people start arriving to the pool in the afternoon. What’s even more obvious is his sincerity, pride and dedication to his job. He told me there’s a sense of achievement knowing that so many people attend and admire the beauty of the pool.

His closing remark was, “I look forward every day to seeing people with family, children and grandchildren enjoying themselves at the pool”. One of life’s greatest pleasures is the satisfaction of a job well done. And when it is carried out by such a dedicated person as you, Cisco, it is always a source of inspiration. Thank you from all the residents of Corte Bella!

Michael Arrington Receives FirstService Residential Leadership Award Jennifer Clifford, FirstService Residential Vice President This past month, FirstService Residential conducted its second quarter all staff meeting. This meeting includes all Arizona associates including on-site staff at our large communities as well as all of our staff at our Scottsdale, Tucson and Peoria offices, representing a total of 300 communities in Arizona. As part of this meeting, FirstService recognizes exceptional performance. One of the awards that is given out at this quarterly meeting is the Leadership Award. In order to be nominated for the FirstService Residential Leadership Award, an employee must display qualities that set examples for others to follow. The Leadership Award is presented to someone who projects a “go-getter” type of personality, a person who thinks outside the box and helps lead the department to a higher level of productivity. This award is open to all AZ employees, including Department Heads. I am pleased to share with the community that Mike Arrington, the General Manager of Corte Bella, was the recipient of the FirstService Residential Leadership Award. All it takes to be a leader is to hold the dominant position in an organization, but what distinguishes an effective leader is something quite more. The measure of a great leader has much less to do with how the role is defined and much more to do with their actual impact on others. When I think about what makes an effective leader, it is someone who, through partnership and supportive management, makes a huge difference in the overall experience people have in their positions. A good leader is transparent and open minded; and it is also someone who is resilient. Mike Arrington’s contributions and partnership to the Corte Bella community, his support, partnership, and leadership of the Corte Bella staff, and the value he brings to FirstService Residential were all key considerations when selecting Mike Arrington as the

winner for this prestigious award. Mike is committed to enhancing the lifestyle of the Corte Bella residents and being a trusted advisor to the Corte Bella Board. Additionally, he has a high care factor for

his team, and his supportive management style is appreciated and celebrated by the Corte Bella staff. Please congratulate Mike on this honorable award next time you see him.

What Will You Do This Summer? Sam Hines Want to travel to a cooler climate? Want to try a different activity? Want to fly through the air? Try Zip Lining! In mid-May a group of fourteen Corte Bella residents traveled to Durango, Colorado for a day of zipping at the longest zip-line course in the world. The Big Timbers Lodge Zip Course boasts of twenty seven separate zip lines and thirty six tree side platforms. Although Durango, Colorado is about a seven hour drive from Corte Bella, many of us chose to split the drive into two days, spending the night in Winslow, Arizona about three hours from Sun City West. We stayed at the famous La Posada Hotel and watched the trains roll by on their way east and west. We also spent some time “Standing on the Corner in Winslow Arizona” like the Eagles song says, “Take it Easy.” The Zipping course is only accessible by the narrow-gauge, steam driven train that runs from Durango to Silverton, Colorado and back each day. We boarded the train at the historic Durango Station at 8:00 AM and arrived at the Tall Timbers Lodge to zip around 10:00 AM. We were greeted by the crew of Sky Rangers. The Sky Rangers fitted us for safely harnesses and gave us detailed safety instructions after which we embarked on the first three zip lines. These were easy, short, and slow – allowing us to get accustomed to the safety harness and the zipping process. Then we moved on to the longer, higher, and faster zip lines. This continued until we stopped for a catered lunch. After lunch, the “biggies” were tackled. Ten times we zipped over the Animas River, had a race with our spouse on a two-person line, and did a three person “fly-over”. The longest zipline was the next-to-last zipline. It was 1,400 feet in length and stretched over the river one final time. After that we were back at the Big Timbers Lodge

back row, left to right: Sam Vanos, Sam Himes, Betty Stahl, Roger Stahl, Otto Furuta, Mel Squires. front row, left to right: Maria Vanos, Kathy Himes, Laura Aparicio, Cindy Buda, Steve Buda, Pat Furuta, Barbara Squires, Linda Plesa. around 3:00 PM and boarded the narrow-gauge train back to Durango. It was a super day filled with fun and soaring activities. Some of us had never zipped before, some of us had. For some of us, it was a “Bucket List” item that could now be removed. While in Durango we stayed in the historic General Palmer Hotel on Main Street. For two evenings, we walked the streets of Durango to a couple great restaurants. After the zipping course, most of us continued to Pagosa Springs, Colorado – about an hour drive from Durango. There we stayed at the Fireside Cabins located on the banks of the San Juan River just upstream from the Hot Springs of Pagosa. After a day of looking around and relaxing along the river bank, we went to the mineral Hot Springs for a few hours of soaking in the therapeutic waters of these renown Hot Springs. After that, we were off again to Winslow, Arizona and the La Posada Hotel for a little more “Standing on the Corner” and an early night before our final drive back to Corte Bella. Everyone agreed, it was a fun filled week with lots of laughs and good times with our friends and neighbors from Corte Bella. This is a summer activity that is recommended for a few days get-away during the hot summer months of Arizona. For more information go to soaringcolorado.com. This trip was in the planning stage for several months which allowed us time to pick a “Team Name” – the “Blazing Zippers” - and order team shirts. The total drive was about 16 hours and about 1000 miles round trip. The roads were good, and the weather was even better.

Back Roads of Iberia Robin Mandell It’s no secret that we love to travel; we enjoy it even more when we travel with friends. We just returned from our eighth international trip with a group from Corte Bella. This was our first experience with the tour company “Overseas Adventure Travel”, a division of Grand Circle Travel. They organize trips for no more than 16 people, going at a fast pace with all kinds of learning and discovery opportunities with the locals. Starting in the beautiful city of Lisbon, we set out on a bus through the countryside of the Iberian Peninsula - the countries of Portugal and Spain. Here are a few examples of our unusual experiences: •

Created our own individual Portuguese tile.

Visited a cork processing plant to see the myriad ways the product of these oak trees can be used - not only for wine bottles, but also purses, shoes, furniture, etc.

Made fresh goat cheese.

Whipped up a whole dinner at a Portuguese cooking class.

Interacted with senior students at the University of Evora, Portugal.

Spent a day on a bull breeding farm - owned by a real matador - outside of Ronda, Spain.

Witnessed the whole process of making olive oil, from tree to bottle.

Enjoyed a private flamenco music and dance performance.

With flamenco dancers in Seville, Spain

At Belem Tower in Lisbon, Portugal Another unique thing with this trip: we stayed at four historic hotels - one in Portugal and three in Spain. The respective governments have restored old monasteries, castles, town halls, fortresses, etc. across the peninsula, and the results are spectacular. There are fabulous locations with modern guest rooms and lovely dining rooms. Did I mention we walked A LOT? We did at least five miles a day, usually up and down hills, and on cobble stones. This was a good thing as we also ate A LOT of the delicious local specialty foods, and very much enjoyed local port, beer, and white and red wines. A very knowledgeable, personable, and delightful program director was with us all day, every day; and we had local guides that pointed out all the highlights at our destinations to include Seville, Ronda, Cordoba, Toledo, and Madrid. We really learned a lot about both countries - the history, culture, people, etc. There was lovely spring weather too, with lots of wild flowers everywhere. Best of all, we had a great time together. We laughed hourly. We created wonderful memories. Sound like fun? It is not hard to put a group of friends together and travel - and you get a discount! Contact me if you are interested and I’ll get you the necessary information. Please email me at RMANDELL@COX.NET.

Drop Toppers Head to Winslow Nancy Wendler On April 23, a group of twenty eight Drop Toppers headed for Winslow, Arizona for the night. Along the way, they stopped at a Sonic Burger for lunch and made quite a splash by taking every parking slot with their convertibles. They stayed at the famous La Posada Resort and had a docent guided tour of what is considered the last

great trackside hotel in the country. Built in 1929 along Route 66 as a Harvey Hotel, every guest room is named for a famous person who stayed at the hotel. The group drove through Homolovi State Park and dined at the hotel’s award winning Turquoise Room.

Corte Bella Tai Chi Group Cathy Boorman On the last Saturday in April each year, a spectacularly moving global event takes place when millions of people practice Tai Chi/ Qigong at 10 am in their local time zones to celebrate “World Tai Chi and Qigong Day”. The “Wave of Tai Chi” begins in Samoa and encircles the globe, ending in Hawaii. Over 65 countries are known to have

participated. The event was started to raise the awareness of Tai Chi and Qigong and to send out intentions of peace, good health and healing. It’s also a lot of fun! On April 28th, the Corte Bella Tai Chi Group joined those around the world by practicing Tai Chi outside on a beautiful Corte Bella morning.

Sea Calm Facial Hello Summer! Our special for the month is the Sea Calm Facial. It’s a perfect way to relax and sooth your skin after all the sun. It reduces blotchy red and stinging skin. Perfect for sensitive, dry skin and people with Rosacea. We would love to see you at the spa for any of our great facials.

Sun Screen Application I get asked often on sunscreen application. Do you apply before or after moisturizer? The answer is simple…after moisturizer is best. And to make it easier, wear a moisturizer or foundation with SPF15 or SPF30 or a mineral make-up which is a natural sunscreen. Just remember to reapply often when outside for long periods of time. It’s Your Health and Your Future – Stand Up to Falling Down Laurel Gedan It was Easter Sunday, 2016. I was in my backyard, running to get my cell phone. My shoe got caught; I tripped and found myself falling face-first toward the hard, flagstone patio. My husband rushed me to Del E. Webb Emergency Room. My left arm was broken, my knees were badly injured, my face was bleeding and my jaw was dislocated. I was now an official member of the club no one wants to join: “people who have fallen.” A fall happens in a split second. I had one friend who fell off a ladder while trimming low branches on a tree. Another tripped over a sprinkler head in her yard. My Mother broke her hip when she fell on the outside stairs while leaving the restaurant at the Boulders Resort after a birthday dinner with my husband and me. Another friend slipped on a water slick in his driveway while washing his car. One friend tripped over the curb at Arrowhead mall and two others tripped over ropes on the golf course. A friend fell in the aisle at Target and broke her hip and another friend tripped on the uneven sidewalk while walking the Corte Bella circle. None of these people were sick. They were all perfectly healthy and going about their day’s activities in one second and lying on the ground seriously injured in the next.

injuries. All of us worry about those devastating diseases that we constantly hear about. But chances of us getting injured from a fall are much more likely. It’s almost an epidemic here in the West Valley. So what can we do about this? We can make ourselves stronger and smarter. I spoke to Rhonda Zonoozi, an exercise physiologist at Sun Health’s Center for Health & Wellbeing. She teaches group classes, for several levels of students, on balance and strength training. She also runs a balance assessment program for those who want an individual program. She’s enthusiastic about her specialty and very knowledgeable about how we can keep from falling. She says emphatically,

Every year, Del E. Webb hospital treats over 62,000 people in their Emergency Room and of that number, 88% of those over the age of 55 are cases due to falls. Yes, you read that right. Not heart attacks. Not strokes. Not car accidents. Falls. It’s the most common reason people come into the hospital’s Emergency Room. The American College of Surgeons considers people 55 and older to be a “Special Consideration” group regarding falls. Approximately 65% of all Trauma Activations are patients who have been injured by falling and are at risk for head

“Many falls can be prevented. Falling is NOT an inevitable part of aging.” Her classes are not only very popular, but they are extremely effective too. If you’re interested in information on any of her classes, call the Center for Health & Wellbeing at (623) 832-9355. I’m already signed up for one of these classes. I have no intention of also joining the club of “people who have fallen more than once.” Laurel Gedan is a Board Member of the Sun Health Foundation and a Corte Bella resident.

What’s Happening in Corte Bella Pam Lawrence, Corte Bella Lifestyle Manager (compiled by Linda Wright)

Cooking with Chef Dan – Southwest Cooking May 4

A sold out class of hungry Corte Bella residents enjoyed margaritas and Mexican beer while they watched Executive Chef Dan Haywood work his magic with tasty southwestern ingredients. Chef’s unique presentation of how to prepare a variety of salsas with different chilies was so appreciated. The enchiladas and the Spanish rice were delicious as was the fabulous dessert of flavored bunuelos. Participants left the class feeling their time and their ticket costs were well spent. ¡Que Bueño!

Diamondbacks vs. Houston Astros at Chase Field May 4

A busload of Corte Bella residents traveled to Chase Field to cheer on the Arizona Diamondbacks for their game against the Houston Astros. A good time at the ball game was enjoyed by all even though the D’backs did not prevail. Ballpark food and drink plus great comradery with fellow Corte Bella neighbors made for a very positive experience for all.

Corte Bella Celebrates Cinco de Mayo May 5

The Santa Barbara room was beautifully decorated for this event and delicious margaritas were flowing. Chef Dan and his Anacapa kitchen crew provided a fabulous buffet of Mexican cooking at its best. The taco and fajitas food station was a hit with each guest. Delicious salads that complimented the Mexican inspired entrees were very much enjoyed. The Mexican desserts of churros and flan were devoured by everyone. Jill Machay and her Anacapa front of the house crew did an amazing job providing excellent service. A sampling of various tequilas was an extra special surprise. The music by a renown classical Spanish guitarist was just the right touch for this delightful fiesta of fun.

Stencil on Wood Art Class May 9

KD Studios, a mobile art studio, came to Corte Bella and provided a delightful opportunity for a large group of Corte Bella ladies and one brave man to create their own stencil masterpiece on a wood plank. With a glass of champagne and a selection of cheeses, each participant did a wonderful job of stenciling something worth taking home to display proudly.

Fresh seafood, artfully displayed under a beautiful ice sculpture, fresh salads, cheese and fruit, hot entrees and sides as well as delicious desserts were enjoyed by all. Superior service by Jill Machay and her staff once again made for a delightful brunch experience for everyone. Its was perfect in every way.

Jason Love Comedy Show “Laugh Out Loud” May 18

A sold out crowd of more than 200 Corte Bella residents laughed, slapped their knees and held their sides during this laugh filled evening with three very entertaining comedians from the Los Angeles area. It was good, clean fun and enjoyed by all. According to the evening’s master of ceremonies, Corte Bella is becoming well known in the LA comedian circles as the place to come to perform. This show never fails to deliver, month after month.

Corte Bella’s Memorial Day Dinner & Dance May 28

It was a delightful time for 130 Corte Bella residents who gathered together to celebrate Labor Day in the Santa Barbara room. The delicious buffet of typical holiday treats (burger and hot dogs, watermelon and potato salad, chicken and more) was a hit and then the fabulous Thaddeus Rose Duo provided dancing music for all to enjoy. This was another wonderful time of food, fun and dancing for all. Life is good in Corte Bella!

Corte Bella Tennis Club Celebrates Cinco de Mayo Joel Piaskowski On Saturday May 5th, all five tennis courts were again filled with the sound of CBTC fun! The second social tournament of the year combined Cinco De Mayo and Wimbledon into one great event. The day started at 8:30 with the sounds of Latino and British music, players warming up, and heaping amounts of awesome sportsmanship. At 9:00, CBTC Vice President, Doug Kitts announced the format and teams for the matches. Players had their choice of dressing in all white as players at Wimbledon must do, or the colors of the flag of Mexico -- red, white and green. There were some incredible matches and all of CBTC members gave it their all. By 11:00 AM, the unexpected heat of the day along with some tough matches had everyone ready to cool down, and play concluded. Individual female and male winners, based on total number of games won, were Karen Watkins and Mark Nillson. With the heat of the day at over 100 degrees, the plans to hold the evening dinner on the Lanai were moved to the home of CBTC Secretary Donna Norton. Entertainment and activities included several tastings for members, compliments of club Social CoChair, Joel Piaskowski. Served up were organic strawberry margaritas, British pub ale and Mexican beer. The assortment of dishes brought by members encompassed a wide delicious variety of Hispanic foods along with the traditional “Strawberries and Cream,” a Wimbledon tradition. Winners of the team trivia contest received the coveted CBTC “Red Hot Chili Pepper” beaded necklace.

Tournament champions Karen and Mark then tackled the piñata. After some mishaps with the piñata, Karen Watkins broke it open to reveal assorted Mexican candies and tennis items. Members then selected items for themselves. The evening concluded with ten nice raffle prizes ranging from gift cards to area restaurants, bottles of wine with music CD’s, to a gift certificate from tennis pro instructor Vince LaRocca. As usual with CBTC events, all members had a wonderful day and night, with lasting memories of the game they all love. Don’t miss out on the fun! Join CBTC now. Dues are only $15, and you don’t even have to play to enjoy the benefits. See our court side bulletin board for more information.

Corte Bella Golf Club News Debbie Parks-Dube, Membership Director The Golf Club that wanders its way through our beautiful community is in really good shape! We have invested in a fertigation system to treat our water to help the grass uptake nutrients in a better way. The new system is in our pump station area by the 12th tee box. The system puts the proper nutrients into the water so when the sprinklers run the course is constantly getting what it needs to help the grass be as healthy as it can be. We have also worked on some cart path repairs in several areas around the course where the concrete was buckling or was just in need of general maintenance. We will do our yearly palm tree trimming as we continue to strive to keep the course beautiful. Summertime is a great time to join the club. We are offering a summer membership promotion; we can give you the best deal on becoming a new member. Since you live in the community,

you already know just how great the people are in Corte Bella. So come on over and play some golf and make memories with the residents of CB.

Pickleball News Robin Mandell Our club is still adding members - latest to join us: • Sue Abramson • Colleen Christ • Denise McElroy • Lee Miller • Yolanda Spears • Michael Wallace

Membership current total: 205 members! A lot of our members do escape to cooler climates during the summer - but we know they are playing wherever they go: indoors (like in Flagstaff) or outdoors (multiple states, cities, and countries are adding courts). The most unusual location that I just witnessed - on a cruise ship (see photo.) I learned that pickleball has become so popular with all its international guests that Holland America Cruise Line has transformed all their ships’ sports decks into a pickleball court. A little windy, but it works.

play time from 7:00 - 10:00 a.m. Evening play - open to anyone in the community - starts at 7:00 p.m. under the lights on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Come on down and check it out.

We do have quite a few members still playing in Corte Bella as well. Every morning Monday – Saturday, we have club member

Stay tuned for the next issue of the CB Times when we’ll review all our upcoming events for the fall. Happy Summer.
