ASSOCIATION

What Would We Be Without You… If you know me, you have probably heard me say at one time or another how important volunteers are to Corte Bella. With all of my heart, I believe this. My 25 years of experience in the industry of Community Management has proven this concept to be true many times over. The best communities are the ones with the best Mike Arrington, Corte Bella Country Club Association, Inc. General Manager volunteer force. I believe that volunteers are a huge part of what takes a community from good to great. Also, even though recognition is not the reason most folks volunteer, I believe it to be very important to recognize their efforts regularly and often. When you really think about it, Corte Bella is a place where most people come to retire, relax and just enjoy the things they had no time for while they were working. Others just cannot stop giving of themselves to benefit others. What a truly admirable quality this is in a human being; the desire to help others. This characteristic is

8 | CB Times | The Official Community Magazine of Corte Bella

what makes them so valuable. I want to believe that most people acknowledge this and let our volunteers know how much they are appreciated whenever the opportunity presents itself. If you don’t or hadn’t really thought about it in those terms, please consider thanking those who make it possible for others to simply enjoy the lifestyle and benefit. Often, I am amazed at the volunteer effort displayed by Corte Bellans. Some say that the typical Corte Bella resident is of the last great generation of volunteers. I hope that is not the case but the world seems to be more about the “me, me, me” mentality rather than putting others first nowadays. I do believe that most Corte Bellans are by nature very generous and giving people and it is often evidenced within and outside the community. In fact, this is one of the things that I think sets Corte Bellans apart from the rest. I’ll end my thoughts here by simply saying; thank you very much, you are appreciated and I can’t imagine Corte Bella without you. You all know who you are and one does not have to look far to find you. This goes for those who are current volunteers and those who have in the past at one time or another. You are the best of the best!

Mike

Board Talk CB Times April 2018 The 10th Anniversary edition of the Corte Bella Times for March 2018 was an outstanding trip down memory lane when looking at a few of the covers of previous editions. Is there anyone out there that has every issue since the first? I have many but not all. This monthly publication has been our primary source of information to all residents since 2008 and we should all be very proud of the Michael McVeigh, CBCCA HOA Board President talented volunteers that have been part of this effort. Thanks to everyone from the past ten years who contributed to the success of our CB Times and thanks in advance to those who will be part of its future.

You are the people that take pride in your work, feel good about what you are doing and work well with others as a TEAM.”

results and share their exciting plans for 2018 at this meeting while votes are being tabulated and verified. We’ll also share the final 2017 financial results and 2018 goals. We hope you will attend this annual meeting and get to know who the fantastic talented and caring volunteers are and what projects they are doing on our behalf. Due to the annual membership meeting, we will not be having a regular Workshop and Open meeting in April. The 2018 Organizational meeting will now take place on May 2, 2018 at 10:00 am. This meeting will determine who the Corte Bella officers will be for 2018/2019. All residents are welcome and encouraged to attend. Your thoughts, opinions, and concerns are very important to me as your Board President. Contact me, anytime, at mmcveigh3@cox.net or 623-433-9921.

Speaking of volunteers, April is also recognized as National Volunteer Recognition Month and our HOA annual Volunteer Recognition event is planned for April 9th. As your HOA President, I’ve had the honor of addressing our volunteer group for the past 2 years at this event and it’s a very special evening. This year’s theme is “Helping Hands”. I look forward to seeing all of the many volunteers again that are the true “Shakers and Movers” in our beautiful community. Many of these same “Your Northwest Valley Desert Oasis!” people that volunteer on our behalf also volunteer outside our gates by giving their time, effort and talent without benefiting monetarily. Our volunteers place the good of others above self and this dedication places them in a very special family. These are the folks that don’t just wait for things to happen, they make things happen. The volunteers in Corte Bella are the ones that can identify what needs to be done and, as Nike would say…”Just do it.” You are the people that take pride in your work, feel good about what you are doing and work well with others as a TEAM. Thanks to all of our residents who volunteer in any capacity and we know you will continue to inspire others to join this special group.

TWO working for YOU!

The Corte Bella Board of Directors 2018 Election is well under way and the election results will be announced at your annual meeting which is scheduled for April 2, 2018 at 6:00 pm. Board Liaison’s or Committee Chairs will make brief presentations on each committee 2017

ASSOCIATION

“Helping Hands” Volunteers at Corte Bella Pam Lawrence, Lifestyle Manager National Volunteer Month in the United States takes place in the month of April. During this month, we celebrate the work that volunteers do all year around. This month is dedicated to honoring all of the volunteers in our nation’s communities as well as encouraging volunteerism. Here at Corte Bella, this is a special time too, and we want to recognize and thank our volunteers for their time, dedication, and passion in achieving their mission. This year’s HOA Volunteer Recognition Night event honoring those who have volunteered with the HOA over the past year will be held on April 9th. This year’s theme is “Helping Hands Corte Bella Volunteers.” The HOA sponsored event (by invitation only) will feature farmto-table local Arizona food products all prepared by the Anacapa kitchen.

Thank you to the HOA Board of Directors for establishing the Volunteer Recognition Program in May 2013. By doing so, it has allowed Corte Bella to promote and recognize volunteerism in our community. Volunteering should not be limited to serving on HOA committees, the Board of Directors or helping with an HOA event. There are several interest groups and clubs functioning within our gates who actively support worthy charities and non-profit organizations. For me, volunteering means taking time out and doing something in the hope that it will help make a difference in someone else’s life. Volunteering gives you an opportunity to give something back to society and is a way of sharing with others. Listed below are the names of our community volunteers. Be sure to thank them for their time, dedication and passion!

* NOTE: The group sponsor, coordinator or chair provided the volunteer names. For example, SOuL (Smiling Out Loud) interest group names those that supported Eve’s Place, Streetlight USA and other charities. Apologies if your name was not included. Please contact Pam Lawrence, Lifestyle Manager (plawrence@cortebellacca.com) about any errors or omissions. A correction and/or supplemental list will be published in the CB Times May issue.

“Serve from the Left, Remove from the Right” Daniel Hernandez Barb Morin The CB Times magazine just celebrated its ten year anniversary of publication. That’s a long time for a magazine to hold people’s interest and it’s also a long time for an employee to stay with the same employer! Daniel Hernandez was selected this month for the CB Times Anacapa employee interview. Last month he celebrated being a twelve year employee with the Anacapa. Daniel started working in a restaurant atmosphere while still in high school. It all started at The Lakes Club in 1999 where he began working after school by busing tables and expediting food. After graduation in 2002, he landed a job at The Palm Brook Country Club in Peoria. He gradually worked up to a server position and to hosting events and banquets. When Daniel was hired at the Anacapa, he carried with him all the skills needed to help insure the restaurant’s success. In 2012, Daniel wanted to broaden his career horizons and went to work for Chubb Insurance. He eventually returned to the Anacapa. Unsure of his career ambitions, Daniel hired on at another insurance company. That was short-lived and he returned to the Anacapa. Whew! Someone once said, “Remember the journey, for it’s sometimes more important than the destination”. That can certainly be applied to Daniel. Daniel married his high school sweetheart fourteen years ago and proudly boasts of his eight year old daughter and six year old son. When he’s not working he enjoys time with his family, hiking, grilling, watching football and relaxing at home.

Daniel agrees the busiest times at the restaurant are Tuesdays and Thursdays during “happy hour”. He has some suggestions for improving customer service such as purchasing drink tickets prior to “happy hour”. That would eliminate the step of having the server charge it on the person’s account or doing cash transactions. Daniel assists in the training of new employees providing his insights on what is expected for the Anacapa dining experience. One of his favorite sayings is to always “Serve from the left. Remove from the right”.

memorable dining experience each and every time. Corte Bella is fortunate to have Daniel and his nearly twenty years of restaurant experience. From his high school junior year to today, his aspirations are still in the restaurant business. What a remarkable and extraordinary “book end” experience! The next time you’re in the restaurant please stop and say how much you appreciate his hard work. Daniel, go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Remember that success is never found, but made by people like you who are determined.

It was a pleasure talking to Daniel and it’s easy to spot his pride in serving Anacapa customers. Maintaining high standards and professional service are his goals. He’s determined to insure you have a

Ultimately, it’s your experience that matters. To be sure, we’re proud of our 30 years of experience in senior living. But, to us, what really matters is your experience at our communities.

COMMUNITY

Volunteer Photographers Extraordinaire Give a Gift Linda Wright For the past ten years running, the CB Times and the Corte Bella community have benefited from the expertise of resident volunteer photographers Mike Biggs and Jim Laskowicz. These two talented individuals are responsible for the beautiful cover photos that grace the front of each issue of our community magazine. The February 10th Anniversary Issue featured a collage of past magazine covers from 2008 to 2018 as compiled by Jim Laskowicz. The cover was made into a poster and when framed was presented by Mike and Jim to Corte Bella HOA General Manager, Mike Arrington. Corte Bella owes a sincere “thank you” to Mike and Jim for their work for the past decade on the behalf the CB Times and community. Your commitment to both are so worthy of recognition and appreciation. Thank you.

A True American Hero WWII Veteran, Hugo Tringali Jon Wendt CB Vets Group is pleased and honored to announce that former US Army Technician 5, Hugo Tringali will be our featured speaker on Tuesday, April 10th at 9:00 am in the Corte Bella Social Hall. All CB Vets meetings are open to the Corte Bella community and their friends. Don’t miss this opportunity to meet a true gentleman and patriot. You do not have to remain for the business meeting following the speaker but are more than welcome to stay. You might even realize you would like to join our organization as a support member! Some information on Hugo’s exceptional background: he served in the US Army from 1943 through 1945 with the 8th Infantry Division in Artillery Combat. He saw Action in France, Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg while achieving significant military decorations to include the EAME (European – African – Middle East) Campaign Medal with ‘4’ Bronze Stars. Also, he was one of eight Arizona WWII veterans to receive the Chevalier (Knight) of the National Order of the Legion of Honor. This is the highest honor France bestows on its’ citizens and foreign nationalists. This honor testifies to former French President Hollande’s high esteem, infinite gratitude and appreciation to the United States’ decisive role (and for Hugo’s personal contribution of courage and devotion) to the liberation of France during WWII.

Hugo, a resident of Corte Bella, will display some personal memorabilia of his war time experience. To this day, he continues to display his dedication by giving presentations to various civic groups and particularly to young people in local schools. His goal is to enhance their knowledge of the sacrifices of past generations of American military veterans and citizens in protecting our country. He hopes to instill patriotism and national pride in today’s youth working towards maintaining our freedom.

COMMUNITY

Having Fun, Making a Difference Smiling Out Loud - “SOuL” Kay Steik, SOuL President Smiling Out Loud (SOuL) was started in 2009 by four Corte Bella neighbor ladies who decided to come together and work to make a difference for people in need. It was decided to make Eve’s Place, an organization that helps abused adults and children, the focus of their charity support efforts. To date, the members of SOuL have raised more than $115,000 to help Eve’s Place and several other charitable organizations. The group has grown to 50 volunteers who are having a great time while making a difference in the outside community. Some of our successful fund raising ventures have included a neighborhood cookbook, “What’s Cookin’ in Corte Bella”, as well as making various craft products to sell at the Shop and Share Fairs. SOul has hosted a book fair, sponsored several evening entertainment concerts by our community’s talented singer, Bonnie Stenzel, and put on a Casino Night. Our Taste of Spring

Wine event was highly successful for five consecutive years and the group’s very popular Holiday Bake Sale and Boutique has also been successful for the past five years. The two newest events on our fund raising calendar are an annual Chili Cookoff in the Fall and the SOuL Sisters’ Attic rummage sale in the Spring. The members of SOuL would like to invite all Corte Bella neighbor ladies to join us at our monthly meeting on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 10:30 in the Bella Stanza Room. For membership information, please contact Carla Smith at smithleta@ymail.com or Marcie D’Olivo at mouseeypad5@cox.net.

Volunteers: Key to Our Success, Ryan’s Case for Smiles JoAnn M. Shaw, CB Resident “Today my 5 year old son had his bone marrow transplant at Phoenix Children’s. When he woke up he hurt but was THRILLED when he was back in his room to see his Very Hungry Caterpillar pillowcase sewn by a loving volunteer. The pillowcases make him feel special and make him feel more at home during his hospital stays. Thank you to you and ALL your amazing volunteers who share their time and talent to bring smiles and the comfort of home to these children.” The Phoenix Chapter of Ryan’s Case for Smiles is in its 4th year! In that time, we have sewn and delivered over 23,000 bright, kid friendly pillowcases to patients, our superheroes at:

Phoenix Children’s Hospital Banner Cardon Children’s Hospital Banner Children’s at Thunderbird

Every month 58 volunteers (of which 29 are Corte Bella residents) come together to sew over 750 cases for smiles for patients with cancer and other chronic illnesses. Nationally, with 120 chapters in the U.S. and Canada serving 369 pediatric hospitals, volunteers have sewn and delivered 1.9 million cases for smiles! It is the volunteers who make this possible with their generosity, compassion, time and talent and hundreds of hours to help sick kids feel better to heal better. Volunteers are the key to our success. “Sometimes superheroes reside in the hearts of children fighting big battles.” Thank you Volunteers for helping our Superheroes SMILE! Volunteering Internationally World of Friends Did you see the movie “Lion”, a story of a boys’ home in the slums of southern India? At the February gathering of Corte Bella interest group, World of Friends, Dr. Stacey McEnnan described her experience of teaching as a volunteer at schools, orphanages and villages near Hyderabad and Bangalore, India. Among the many interesting things she shared, perhaps the most intriguing involved shoes. In many parts of India, wearing shoes to school is a requirement for attendance. No shoes, no school! As a result, each time she returns to India, she not only brings her teaching tools but also the money she has collected to buy a pair of shoes for each of the students so they can continue in school. She described another program in which she is involved and helps promote; it’s called Peace Child. Some of the organization’s projects in the past have included painting and building schools, digging latrines, providing medical screening for poor children, and creating libraries in classrooms without books. Individuals interested in helping can participate projects like this if they want to make a difference. One new project involves teaching village children to swim. Every year during the monsoon season, a number of children who can’t

swim drown in rushing rivers which generally lack fencing or other barriers to protect against accidents. Since most children are not taught to swim at home, Peace Child has taken this on as one of its programs. The biggest challenge has been to find a pool that will allow “untouchable” children to swim. Although they have identified a possible pool for this purpose, this has not yet been finalized. Dr. McEnnan is also the founder of The Alexandria Academy, an alternative school headquartered in Westlake Village, California. Thirty years ago, she realized the need to educate children on a more individual level, building on each student’s abilities, interests and goals. Each student in the academy not only receives a set of curricula written for his/her unique needs, but also a personal mentor. The school now operates in six states and has friends in several countries. Note: The presentation by Dr. McEnnan is just one example of the types of conversations at the World of Friends gatherings. Everyone is welcome! The meeting schedule for the next several months includes: April 9: Home of Emily Tipton and John Eakins 22307 N. Pedrogosa Drive May 14: Home of Christa Marpole 13544 W. Figueroa Drive Although some of you will migrate northward over the summer, those of us stay around will continue to meet. To be added to the World of Friends mailing list, email Merrill Ewert: merrill.ewert@gmail.com

A Conversation with P.S. Volunteers Donna Norton and Colleen Miller What do you do at the Thompson Ranch Elementary school as a volunteer? DN: “The kindergarten teacher has me focus on the children who are struggling in some aspect of learning, whether it is sounds, numbers, math, symbols or site words. She asks that I work with either individuals or groups to progress their learning. We talk about utilizing different strategies including writing in sand, counting blocks, or looking at flash cards with everyday items.” How did you become a volunteer and why – what are your reasons for doing this? DN: “Before retiring from Abbott, I thought I wanted to be a teacher in ‘retirement.’ I enrolled in Rio Salado Certification program and wanted ‘real life experiences’ to improve my learning; so I volunteered at Thompson Ranch. I quickly learned that I did not want to be a teacher… it is a lot of work! But I did find volunteering to be a very enriching experience.” CM: “I taught for thirty seven years and know the

importance of getting off to a good start as a student. I wanted to give back by working with younger children.” What do you gain from this work and how do you measure success as a volunteer? DN: “Learning to read is foundational in life. If you learn to read, you can read to learn. Kindergarten teachers have in excess of 20+ children in a class and are unable to focus on the weakness of one child. Being a volunteer allows you the opportunity to take a child who is struggling to a child who is succeeding.” CM: “Donna introduced me to the teachers and we immediately established a rapport. Since consistency is important, I try to make sure I’m able to be in the classroom weekly.” How would someone get involved with this and what must they do to be cleared as a volunteer? “Go to the website: Dysart. org and follow the path, Community >> Getting Involved >> Volunteer Information and follow the instructions.”

COMMUNITY

Outside the Gates… Helping Those in Need Linda Wright There are two lovely ladies residing here in Corte Bella who have given of their time to help the truly needy on a weekly basis and they have been doing this for years. Nancy Healy and Paula Penkauskas volunteer in a local soup kitchen in the neighboring city of El Mirage (at the Santa Teresita Catholic Church’s dining room.) Paula serves on Mondays and Nancy is there on Tuesdays. Nancy Healey

The soup kitchen is open and serving a healthy and full luncheon meal from Monday to Friday; opening at 10:00 AM until 11:30 noon. The average number of persons dining there are between 80 to 100 persons. Anyone can use this service and all are welcomed. Many are “regular” customers.

The Catholic charity the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul operates this El Mirage Dining Room and provides all the food and arranges for the meal preparation. Nancy and Paula help with serving the meals – the Paula Penkauskas customers/guests are served tableside and provided with all the respect and dignity one

would receive in a restaurant. Paula had previously been involved with a homeless shelter in another state and when she moved to Arizona, a friend pointed her in the direction of this facility. That was over six years ago. Nancy has been volunteering there even longer and is part of her parish church’s volunteer group. Nancy also travels twice a month into Phoenix to help with the “reclamation” of donated food at the Saint Vincent de Paul’s main facility. Both Nancy and Paula stressed the value of their donated time and of how much they both gain from providing these worthy people of needed nutrition, friendship and a safe refuge while they eat their meal. Nancy mentioned that efforts to remember favorite foods and beverages of the regulars makes for a very nurturing and positive experience for those people. Paula has a playlist on her phone for one guest who loves music and she plays it for him while he eats. This type of volunteer work is so very satisfying to both Nancy and Paula, who are both demonstrating the best of compassion and consideration for others. Sharing of oneself in the serving others a meal, cleaning the dining facility, breaking down food donations at the big warehouse and just being pleasant and kind to those less fortunate is the true definition of a volunteer. Good job and well done, Nancy and Paula. If anyone is interested in this program and possibly volunteering, you can contact Nancy or Paula; or contact the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at 602.261.6886 or online at www.stvincentdepaul.net.

Encourage tree roots to spread out and away from the trunk by moving water emitters out to the drip line. Trees will suffer less in the summer heat with a wider root system.

• •

Fertilize roses full strength. Fertilize citrus in pots and palms. Place mulch around roots of plants and roses to protect against drying out. Don’t allow the mulch to touch the trunk as this encourages rot. REPLACE YOUR WATERING CONTROLLER BATTERY, whether you need to or not! Check agaves for snout weevil (1” long black “uglies”) Do heavy pruning of oleanders this month and prune bougainvillea, lantana, and verbena. Sow warm season vegetables: snap beans, lima beans, okra, cucumber, melon, squash, beets, leaf lettuce, carrots, radish, spinach

The activities started at noon with the Honor Ceremony, which featured the Surprise Police Department Honor Guard Team, the Corte Bella Chorus singing our National Anthem and “God Bless America”, and John Mestemacher with a reading and Moment of Silence to remember our fallen warriors. All 132 golfers enjoyed a cool, clear day of golf and many oncourse competitions. Photo courtesy of Greg Giuliani concluded with an outstanding steak and chicken buffet at the Anacapa Restaurant. A total of $35,410 was raised for the benefit of Arizona’s needy veterans and their families! The Corte Bella Vets thank the Corte Bella Golf Club, Anacapa restaurant and their staffs, all the volunteers, the participating golfers and especially our generous sponsors and donors for making the event such a success. Lastly, many thanks to Mr. Greg Giuliani, a Corte Bella Resident who produced a great 14 minute video of the day’s events, which you can view here: https://vimeo.com/256353748. Corte Bella Vets look forward to the Fifth Annual Charity Golf Tournament scheduled for Sunday February 17, 2019!

Volunteers Teaching Tennis to Kids

Net Generation and Dysart School District Donna Norton Hunter, an 8 year old boy, has crocodile tears streaming down his face, as he announces, “I am a failure at everything I do!” His coach challenges this premise with the story of the “little engine that could” and in time Hunter realizes that he is improving every time he attends the one-hour introduction to tennis at his elementary school. The tears and sad comments have stopped! The Corte Bella volunteers of Net Generation (Patsy Kitts, Colleen Miller, Donna Norton, Sarah and Norm Smith) are introducing children in 2nd grade to 5th grade to the game of tennis in the Dysart School District. Utilizing protocols

developed by the United States Tennis Association, they work with both groups and individuals on grip, stroke, movement, and scoring in tennis, a game they can play for life. In addition, the attributes of good sportsmanship are discussed at each meeting. The children provide their perspective on what it means to: respect others, be responsible, be honest, be a good teammate, and to have integrity. Please note that having good tennis skills are not essential for this volunteer opportunity. Having a willing/positive attitude makes all the difference. If you are interested in helping with this program please call Jason Jamison at 602-432-5485.

It’s Your Health and Your Future – Sun Health at Home Laurel Gedan My husband and I love our Corte Bella home. It’s spacious and comfortable and, after 12 years here, we’ve got it exactly the way we want it. But we’re also aware that, as we get older, there’s a good chance that one or both of us may get ill and we might not be able to stay here on our own. Luckily for all of us who live here in the West Valley, Sun Health has created a superb program to help people like us who want to continue living in our own homes, even as we need more assistance. It’s called “Sun Health At Home”. This is an innovative approach for those of us who want to plan for our future longterm care needs. When you join the program, it acts as a kind of insurance program. If and when you need support, assistance, personal aides or even coordination of services for whatever your needs may be, Sun Health At Home can help you. We have good friends I’ll call Jim and Jane. They are in their early 70’s and were enjoying life here at Corte Bella. Even though they both were very healthy and active, Jim had the foresight to join the Sun Health at Home program. Shortly after joining, Jane developed an aggressive and inexplicable illness and in a matter of months is now confined to their house, needing 24/7 care. She’s had constant trips to the ER in the middle of the night. But when Jim calls 911, he also calls his Sun Health Wellness Coordinator and she meets them at the ER, helping to smooth Jane’s entry into the hospital. The Coordinator has arranged for aides to come in whenever Jim needs to leave the house, with the program paying for the vast majority of the expense. She

continually visits and checks up on Jane. When they signed up, neither of them had any idea they would need this help so soon. But now they are immensely grateful that they are in this program. I have a close friend named Barbara, who is a widow. She has children, but they live out of state. It was when she was filling out the paperwork for a new doctor (and ran into the question “Who should we contact in case of emergency”) that she realized she didn’t know what name to write down. She has many friends and neighbors here in Corte Bella, but she felt she couldn’t ask them to help her in an emergency that might occur at 2:00 am. So she has enrolled in the Sun Health At Home program and tells me she now feels so much more at ease, knowing she has someone she can rely on, at any hour of the day or night, if she needs unexpected assistance. Unlike long-term care insurance, with the At Home program, there are no caps and no gaps in coverage. Your Sun Health wellness coordinator will step in immediately and act as your partner and advocate, making sure your wishes are followed, and you always have the care and services you need. I like to call them “the daughter down the street” who can and will help you whenever you need it. If, like us, you’d like to stay in the comfort of your own home as you get older, you might call the Sun Health At Home program and see if what they offer meets your needs. The phone number is (623) 227-4663. Laurel Gedan is a Corte Bella resident and Board Member of Sun Health Foundation. For more information on this and other programs offered by Sun Health, call Laurel at (623) 455-9067.

Questions Commonly Asked of the Aesthetician Kathi Dahl - Licensed Aesthetician MICRODERMABRASION I’m sure you’ve heard of microdermabrasion but don’t really understand what is. Well, let me explain! It is the fastest, non-invasive but gentle anti-aging treatment for the face. It is a facial resurfacing technique performed in a series of 6-8 treatments.

The benefits are many. • Complexion becomes brighter and smoother • Evens out skin tone • Allows better penetration of serums and moisturizers • NO DOWNTIME!! It exfoliates the skin and removes superficial layers of dry, dead skin cells. It can buff and polish the skin by using a stream of fine crystals or a diamond tip.

28 | CB Times | The Official Community Magazine of Corte Bella

It may leave skin slightly red for only a few hours. It is recommended to use a soothing moisturizer and a good sunscreen. However, it does not get rid of dark sun spots, deep wrinkles or redness. Also, it is not recommended for anyone with broken capillaries. Call the Spa Front Desk at (623) 217-2018 to book your appointment today!

What’s Happening in Corte Bella Linda Wright

Sunday Cabaret with Thaddeus Rose Sunday, February 11

The Anacapa was the place to be on Sunday night on February 11th. The popular Thaddeus Rose band had a sold out cabaret crowd on their feet and dancing the night away. Attendees enjoyed bistro food prepared by Chef Dan and his kitchen which was served with class by Jill Machay and her kitchen staff. “No need to sit alone in your room, come to the cabaret!”

Speaker Series #2 with Dr. Robert Farrell “The Science Behind Noah’s Flood” Thursday, February 22

A provocatively interesting perspective and possible scientific explanation behind the historic flood during the days of Noah was presented by Dr. Robert Farrell, a retired Penn State University Associate Professor Emeritus and published author of both non-fiction and fiction books. A lively discussion between the professor and the attendees regarding his hypothesis ended a stimulating evening.

Secure Shredding Event with Assured Document Destruction Monday, February 26

Madri Gras “Fat Tuesday” Cajun Dinner Tuesday, February 13

Anacapa’s Chef Dan and his staff prepared an amazing array of Cajun foods for the enjoyment of many Corte Bella residents who enjoyed food and drink the night before the advent of Lent. This annual buffet event is always fun and delicious.

“Beyond Hearing Aids” Seminar with Advanced Bionics/Connect Hearing Thursday, February 22

An informative introduction to exciting developments in the hearing solutions industry was sponsored by Corte Bella resident and bilateral cochlear implant recipient Linda Wright. Attendees enjoyed a brunch prepared by the Anacapa and were able to receive free hearing screenings from an audiologist from Connect Hearing.

It’s an annual February “event” and just like every year, a great number of Corte Bella residents purchased vouchers that allowed them to securely dispose of personal records, paper and important private material right here in their community. A cadre of volunteers provided assistance so that “customers” did not even have to leave their vehicles. Nice work, everyone!

Goodyear Park Spring Training Game Cincinnati Reds vs. Arizona Diamondbacks Monday, February 26

Corte Bella was well represented at the Goodyear Spring Training facility for some good baseball between the visiting AZ D’backs and the home team Cincinnati Reds. Along with Lifestyle Manager Pam Lawrence, fifty one residents enjoyed VIP seating, a private baseball park food buffet, dedicated bartender service and the “Senior Stroll Around the Bases” at the end of the game. What a great day and what good, old fashioned American fun!

The Anacapa table were beautifully set and sixty eight Corte Bella residents enjoyed a delightful selection of Spanish regional wines paired to an exquisitely prepared four course meal, compliments of Executive Chef Dan Haywood and his kitchen staff. Corte Bella Goes to the Races Turf Paradise Trip Wednesday, February 28

Capping off a busy February of many HOA activities and events was a day trip to this iconic Phoenix landmark, Turf Paradise Horse Racing Park. A comfortable bus transported thirty eight Corte Bella residents to the racecourse and back. A delicious luncheon buffet in the third floor lounge gave everyone the energy they needed to place their bets and take their chances for the eight featured races on a muddy but fast racetrack. The featured third race was named the Corte Bella Purse and ten of the attendees watched the race right at the rail and then stood with the winning horse and jockey in the winner’s circle.

Cooking with Chef Dan Flavors of New Orleans Friday, March 2

Anacapa Executive Chef Dan Haywood focused on cuisine of the South for this cooking demonstration. Wonderful flavors filled the air and the class attendees enjoyed chicken gumbo, shrimp and grits plus pecan pie – the preparation techniques and recipes were all imparted to the lucky persons attending the class.

Corte Bella’s Annual Spring Marketplace Sunday, March 4

This event is the traditional way that Corte Bella welcomes Spring to our community. Filled with new vendors, the marketplace was well received and well attended.

Habit Change is the Key to Permanent Weight Loss Jennifer McKee, daughter of Sam and Debbie McKee Most of us are looking for quick fixes when it comes to weight loss. We try many diets, shakes, supplements, and workouts. Yet, nothing works! We become stuck in a vicious cycle of losing weight and then gaining it back. After several failed attempts, we no longer believe we can get healthy. The big secret to permanent weight loss and sustained good health is habit change. There is no quick fix or perfect diet. We must create a healthy lifestyle made up of healthy habits. Diets and other weight loss gimmicks do not work in the long run because they make us feel deprived, don’t focus on mindset, and are not sustainable ways of living. Balance and self-love must be a part of a healthy lifestyle. Habit change is not as hard as it seems. We must commit to small attainable goals and not let our negative inner critic sabotage our efforts. We must not quit when we make a mistake. It is crucial to learn from our mistakes and keep moving forward. When we commit to our goals and follow through, our self-trust and belief in ourselves grows exponentially making habit change much easier. I’ve lost over 50% of my body weight naturally (185 lbs) as a result of creating healthy habits. I’ve maintained my weight for 1.5 years now. My weight loss story is featured in the April 2018 issue of Women’s Health magazine. My journey created a deep passion within me to help others who have food addictions and/or are keeping themselves stuck in a vicious cycle of yo-yo dieting. I am now a Certified Integrative Nutrition Health Coach to pay forward what I’ve learned. Health coaches are guides and mentors who help people create healthy habits so they can reach their wellness goals. I’ve had the pleasure of helping my parents who have been residents of Corte Bella for 10 years. My dad (69 years old) has

lost 170 lbs naturally and my mom (66 years old) has lost 80 lbs naturally. They now have much more energy and have added years onto their lives. My dad has dramatically lowered his cholesterol levels and his blood pressure. His doctor is currently weaning him off of blood pressure medication that he has been on for 25 years. My mom was on type 2 diabetes medication for 15 years. As a result of her nutrition changes, her doctor weaned her off of her medication over 1.5 years ago! I had a number of health issues at my heaviest including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, acid reflux, eczema, severe plantar fasciitis and tarsal tunnel syndrome in both feet. These issues resolved on their own as a result of nutrition changes except for my foot issues. I’ve since had surgery on both feet which dramatically improved my activity level. Within the last year, I’ve run many half marathons, 10K’s, 5K’s, a duathlon and Olympic distance triathlon. Never say never. We are capable of much more than we know! About the author: Jennifer McKee is an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach who has lost over 50% of her body weight (185 lbs) naturally. Jennifer is currently offering a free 30-minute consultation.
