ASSOCIATION

Vote to Revise the Governing Documents In last month’s CB Times, I mentioned the importance of voting on the proposed CCR and Bylaw changes that I anticipated would be sent out to the residents for vote. Well, one thing lead to another and the proposed ballot schedule changed, as they do sometimes with Mike Arrington, General Manager additional consideration. I took a risk because the CB Times is the one media channel that goes to every resident and I wanted to take advantage of that to encourage voting as changes to the Governing Documents require a majority plus one lot (826 lots) to pass. In other words, I could not risk passing up the number one form of communication the Board and management have with you on such an important matter. It did not come to fruition as I predicted, so I apologize for any confusion that was created. Again this month, I am addressing the same cause and for the same reason. By the time you read this article, there is a good chance that you already have or will be asked to vote on changes (only one) to the Governing Documents. At the time I wrote this article, the matter had not fully been decided relating to when and how the vote would take place. Based on what I knew at the time, I anticipated that you would have either received a ballot for a special vote specific to a single change or that the single change item would be included on the Annual Meeting Ballot as a third item along with the usual votes for Board Directors and the 70604 ruling that residents are asked to approve every year. If you have not received a ballot to vote on by now or instructions to vote on an online voting website, the chances are that the single item has been included on the aforementioned Annual Meeting Ballot as a third item. Also, you can always refer to the Association’s website at cortebella.net or call the HOA Administration Office at (623) 328-5068 for up-to-the-minute information regarding whether a ballot has been sent. You may have received a ballot in the mail by now and already know the answer. Now that I have caught you up, please note that the board voted in October to narrow the original ballot items down from four or five to just one single item in order to address what was really important at the time and to simplify the issue for voters. It was not decided at that time yet as to whether there would be a special ballot sent out or included in the Annual Meeting Ballot. What I did know for certain at the time I wrote this article, is what you would eventually be asked to vote on. That being said, the remainder of this article will be dedicated to explaining what you will be asked to vote for so that you understand it and where to get answers if you have questions. After you read the explanation to follow, if you still have questions, you can contact me at Michael.Arrington@FSResidential.com or call me at (623) 328-5068. There will be a lot of communication of this matter

8 | CB Times | The Official Community Magazine of Corte Bella

on the website, at board meetings and a town hall meeting (or two) in addition to this article. Communication on this matter is imperative in order to get the number of votes needed to pass it. Therefore, getting residents to vote is the main focus. You will be asked to vote to amend section 10.13 (b) of the Declaration (CC&R’s) which speaks to the “Reserve Fund Fee”. The proposed language change states, “Fee Limit. The fee shall not exceed 150% of the Base Assessment, as defined in Section 1.9, applicable to the fiscal year in which the transfer occurs.” A “Yes” vote on the ballot indicates you are in favor of the change and a “No” indicates you are not in favor of the change. Explanation of the proposed change: First, this change is proposed by the Board of Directors to benefit the lot owners in the community. That said, you can assume that the board recommends this change to you. Currently, each time a lot is sold in the community, a fee is collected, one time, at the closing. Currently, that fee is one half (1/2) of the base assessment which in 2019 will amount to $936. This fee is negotiable between the buyer and the seller as are most fees in a home sale but must be collected at closing and paid to the association. This money can only be used to improve community assets and goes straight into the Reserve Fund. It cannot be used as operating capital or for any other reason. The most important information you need to understand is that a “Yes” vote does not automatically change the current amount collected. The intent of this is to simply raise the “amount ceiling” from one half (50%) of the annual base assessment to one hundred and fifty percent (150%), so that the board has the ability to vote to change the “actual amount” collected, over the years if and when it becomes necessary, instead of trying to pass a vote of the entire community every time it needs to be increased. In order to change the amount actually collected, this board and all other boards in the future would still have to vote in an open meeting to change the actual amount collected and would not be able to exceed 150% without the approval by vote of the entire community. “Community votes” of the members are expensive and extremely hard to pass because of the large number of votes required (majority plus one). Lastly, this change only affects someone selling their home. Please remember, I said it can be negotiated with the buyer to decide who pays it. No one else is affected directly. If you are already a homeowner in the community, then you are indirectly affected because your Reserve Fund will grow faster when the amount collected is increased, which can be used to improve the amenities your ownership allows you to enjoy. Again, everyone is strongly encouraged to vote. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact the Association management. I’d be happy to walk you through it and answer any questions. I hope to see you soon and Happy Holidays to everyone!

Board Talk As 2018 draws to a close, I would like to extend a sincere thank you to all of our residents, volunteers and management company staff for their contributions in making the overall living and lifestyle experience here in Corte Bella the best it can be. We continue to thrive because of a teamwork spirit. I’m extremely grateful for your tremendous efforts and wish you all a joyous Michael McVeigh, CBCCA HOA Board President

holiday season. This is our 13th holiday season here in Corte Bella and we look forward to celebrating many more milestones with our community in the future. Last month I attended several community events and I continue to meet new residents that are experiencing many events for the first time. One resident told me after moving here from a nearby active adult community, they continue to be amazed at the number and quality of events available. Thank you to our lifestyle manager for listening to our residents and for trying new things. SOul’s 3rd annual Charity Chili Cook Off was another outstanding sold-out event. Congratulations to the winners and to all participants plus the attendees that made this event a success. It was great to see Corte Bella’s own Keith Fowler as DJ. The

remaining events for December remind me how much Lynne and I love living here. December is filled with many options for our residents and the annual Corte Bella “Walk-About-Night” will be held on Friday, December 7th at dusk. We have many new residents that have never seen this event. It’s one display you will never forget. Thanks to the residents that make this happen each year for our benefit. Other holiday events are included in this edition with the New Year’s Eve Gala Celebration closing out the year. Our Anacapa staff will be busier than ever this time of the year, so please let them know you appreciate their efforts. The upcoming events such as the Holiday Christmas Tree Lighting and Dinner Buffet; Holiday Golf Cart Parade and Buffet; Annual Holiday Breakfast Buffet; Christmas Eve Holiday Buffet; Hanukkah – Lighting of the Menorah and other private events will provide residents with many options to celebrate the good life we enjoy here in Corte Bella. As always, your Board remains dedicated to our mission of serving all residents of Corte Bella in the best possible way. It is our pleasure to serve and the entire Board wishes you all the best for the Holiday season and a joyous New Year. The next Board workshop will be held Friday, December 7th at 9:00 AM and the next Board meeting, is on Wednesday, December 12th at 10:00 AM. December meetings are held earlier than usual due to the holiday season. Your thoughts, opinions and concerns are very important to me as your Board President. Contact me at any time, at mmcveigh3@cox.net/623-433-9921.

From the Editor’s Desk Linda Wright As this year comes rapidly to a close, please allow me to wish each of you in Corte Bella – those who reside here and those who work here – a very Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah and a very Happy New Year. On behalf of all the many contributing authors, the photographers and the proofreaders who assist me with each issue of your community magazine, we hope your

holidays will be filled with smiles, laughter, love and many lasting memories. All of us affiliated with the CB Times hope you’ve enjoyed the past year’s issues as much as we’ve enjoyed making sure each one was worth a read. We hope you’ll like the final magazine of 2018. It’s been a good year for the CB Times.

Executive Chef Dan Haywood, Anacapa Restaurant A recipe from Chef Dan

Grilled Vegetable Kabobs (serves 4) •

• • • • • • • • •

5 cup vegetables (squash, onions, eggplant, mushrooms, etc.) cut into 1 – 1 ½”cubes 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar 1/4 cup olive oil 1/4 cup chopped tomato 1 tsp. honey 2 Tbsp. chopped fresh herbs (basil and thyme are nice) 1 Tbsp. lemon juice 4 cloves minced garlic 1/4 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. pepper

Cut the vegetables into bite-size pieces or leave them whole, depending on their shape. (For example, you’d want to chop up zucchini but not cherry tomatoes.) Place them in a large bowl. Whisk together the remaining ingredients. Pour the marinade over the vegetables and stir to coat. Refrigerate and marinate for a few hours.

Kale and Sunflower Salad • • • • • • • • • • •

1/2 cup lemon juice 1 Tbsp. Canola 1 Tbsp. Olive Oil 1 Tbsp. White Sugar ½ tsp. Salt ¼ tsp. Black Pepper, ground 4 cups Kale 4 Cups Baby Spinach 1 pint Grape Tomatoes, cut in half ½ cup roasted Sunflower Seeds ½ cup dried Cranberries

Thread the vegetables onto bamboo or metal skewers. If you’re using bamboo skewers, it’s a good idea to soak them in water for at least 30 minutes so they don’t catch on fire when you put them on the grill.

Whisk lemon juice, canola oil, olive oil, sugar, salt, and black pepper in a large bowl.

Grill the kabobs over medium heat for about 8-10 minutes, turning once.

Add kale, tomato, sunflower seeds, and cranberries. Toss to combine.

Wine & Food: Uncorked Deborah Damery Lazear, CSW Now that the “Welcome Back” seasonal parties and Thanksgiving are over, it is time for the second biggest entertaining extravaganza of the year. This issue will address several cooking considerations, a wine of the month, and a few problem pairings.

submerge the meat in the mixture for 20-30 minutes. Any leftover marinade can be brought to a boil to kill any bacteria then can be used in the pan sauce. Remember to carve the meat across the grain for maximum tenderness.

Cocktail and hors d’oeuvre parties are popular in Corte Bella. The most common RSVP comment I get is “What can I bring?” We Corte Bellans are a generous lot.

Q. What does wine do for cooking that water doesn’t?

While you could easily set up a bar with many types of wine, why not challenge your group to open their minds to an very old and wildly popular selection of Rosé. This wine is made from red grapes of many kinds: Grenache, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon - you get the point. There is something for everyone. Because the grape juice is in contact with the grape skins for only a short time, the color and intensity (including tannins) is lessened. The result is lots of flavor on a lighter palate. This makes the white wine drinkers happy too. Rosé can be a still or bubbly wine. It can cost as little as $10 or over $200. Rosé Champagne just happens to be my favorite wine of all time and the real thing from France is a treasure trove of delight on my palate. Remember in the last CB Times issue I reminded you to look for the alcohol content on the lable. If it is below 8% or so, this wine will taste SWEET to you. That is great for dessert where you want the wine sweeter than the food, but not good for savory hors d’oeuvres. Rosé wines come in various hues from pale pink to a deep salmon. They are beautiful to look at so serve them in plain, uncut, no color glasses. Serving temperature is important here. This is not a white wine to be served at 55°F. It is not a red to be served at 65°F. It is in between. I serve my still Rosé at 60°F. Now, many of us do not have a thermometer for our wine so here is a quick cheat sheet. If you have a wine cooler under the counter in your bar or around your house somewhere, it should be set at 53°F. So, take the Rosé out of the cooler, put it in the fridge for half an hour and voila, perfect 60°F Rosé. If your Rosé just came out of the grocery bag or cupboard, put it in the fridge for one hour up to two hours. Do not keep it chilled in an ice bath. If the wine is too cold, you won’t taste it. (Hint: If you’re on a tight budget, serve the wine cold and serve cheese with it. Cheese clouds the flavor of a cheap and cheerful wine. This is an old trick from poor college days).

Compounds, including spices, in food dissolve (aka bloom) in water or fat but alcohol is a different kind of molecule. It is a carrier of flavor. Adding alcohol to tomatoes (vodka or wine) stimulates the release of flavors that other carriers don’t. Adding wine to a pan sauce will pick up the fond (brown bits) and enhance the flavor. A nob of butter to finish the sauce and then t is done.

Q. Sometimes a friend will bring a bottle of wine to dinner and it is not a good match. Any suggestions? If you are sure your friend wants you to drink the bottle with dinner that night, here is what to do to bridge the gap between a bad match and a good match. Add a bridge ingredient to the dish to pull the two together. Toasted nuts bridge to a buttery Chardonnay; sprinkle them over the plate as a garnish. Peppercorns added to the finishing pan sauce will bridge to a Cabernet. Crumbled goat cheese will bridge the salad to a Sauvignon Blanc. A drizzle of good Extra Virgin Olive Oil just before serving will counter balance a high acid white. A bit of cream or a pat of butter at the end is a simple bridge. A considerate guest will present the bottle to you with the suggestion that you may want to tuck it away for another day thereby allowing you to decide if the wine is a good pairing. Grape/Wine of the Month: Rosé • Prosciutto and bread sticks • Rare tuna • Aioli • Avocado • Smoked bacon burgers • Saffron • Japanese salmon sushi roll • Herbed horseradish mayonnaise • Steamed Chinese pork buns • Baked ham • Rack of lamb • Duck breast • Salmon filet

Frequently Asked Questions Q. Will wine in my marinade tenderize the meat? Wine does affect the muscle proteins that make meat more tender, but works so slowly that it doesn’t get to the center of the meat. The outside turns to mush before the inside has any benefit. Wine marinades are for flavor on the exterior of the meat. Simmer the wine and other marinade ingredients, cool, and

*TOTAL SURPLUS/(DEFICIT) Summary: Net Results of operations Year-to-Date (YTD) through Sep 30, 2018 is unfavorable to budget by $5,000. Adding back depreciation (Traditional Cash Flow) provides for ($35,000) favorable cash position. Administration net expense continues favorable ($31,695) due to unused contingency expense budget of ($22,500.) Continuing unfavorable to budget is the gate repairs expense under the Guardhouse department ($13,889.) This is attributed primarily to older assets and continued minor accidents that are generally deemed too expensive to collect upon. Landscaping expense remains favorable ($10,658.) This is due more to timing in budgeting versus timing in completing the tasks. The Restaurant continues to exceed income budgets YTD ($82,396) due to continued increased patronage and cross sales by staff. Tremendous effort by our General

(5) Manager, Food & Beverage Managers and the staff. Restaurant expense continues unfavorable ($121,199.) This unfavorable expense relates to budgeting errors in payroll attributed to the State mandated minimum wage increases of $2.50, combined in 2017 and 2018, plus additional costs of inventory related to increased sales. Having a $5,000 variance in budget as compared to actual results through 9 months of operations on an operating budge having Gross Revenues of $3,077,286 year-to-date, September 30, 2018, is an exceptional industry wide result. We should be tremendously satisfied with our Board of Directors, Management company and its staff for a job better than well done!

Corte Bella Budget Special Notice Regarding Internal Accounting Change to the 2019 Budget. Dan Kronlund, Finance Committee Chairperson

Kathy Carmickle – Board Treasurer

Association’s irrigation system. The committee and the board agreed not to do so until the 2020-year budget so the 2019 assessments would not increase more than the current approved amount of $20 quarterly per household.

The approved 2019 budget included a partial increase to the Repair & Replacement Reserve in the amount of $74,385; attributed specifically to the repayment of the Capital Reserve loan from the Repair & Replacement General Reserve Fund relating to the street light poles, luminaries, and LED bulbs acquisition December 2017. The Finance Committee recently discovered that that amount was inadvertently added twice in the final 2019 Reserve budget number.

It has been agreed upon by the Finance Committee and the Board of Directors that the best corrective measure for the double accounting of the Capital Loan repayment (which equates to $44.00 per household annually) is to reallocate those funds to a new Irrigation System Replacement & Reserve fund, which will start in 2019. This reallocation does not in any manner, shape, or form, change or otherwise increase or decrease the 2019 Budgeted Household Assessment, as approved by the Board of Directors and presented to the residents in October.

In the initial stages of the 2019 budget process, the Finance Committee and Board of Directors wanted to add a Reserve amount to the 2019 budget for Corte Bella County Club

If you have any questions please contact our General Manager, Mike Arrington, or Finance Committee Chairperson, Dan Kronlund.

Corte Bella Vets News Karen Starkman October was a busy month for the Corte Bella Vets. Thank you to those who came to Buffalo Wild Wings (BWW) “Give Back” day on October 18th. Because of generous customers, BWW donated $390.54 to the Corte Bella Vets. Our Corte Bella Community gathered (along with their generous donations) on October 24th for our second annual Christmas Stocking Event. There was such an outpouring of donations that a second event was held on November 1st to stuff additional stockings. This year, in conjunction with America’s Mighty Warriors, a total of 204 Christmas stockings were stuffed for deployed military Special Forces. What a pleasant surprise we had when Fox 10 Live invited us to their studio on October 23rd to preview our Christmas stocking event. On October 24th, NBC 12 News’s Anchor/Reporter Trisha Hendricks came to Corte Bella to interview Debbie Lee (America’s Mighty Warriors Founder and CEO), Larry Leighton and a few of our Corte Bella Veterans. On October 27th, we held our inaugural dance fundraiser with Corte Bella resident Keith Fowler as DJ. There was a nice turnout which raised $1,560 to be donated to various veteran organizations in the Northwest Valley.

As December 7th (Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day) approaches, you are reminded of a ceremony to be held at the Pearl Harbor Monument located at Wesley Bolin Plaza (1700 W. Washington Street, Phoenix) at 11:00 AM. Also, the Portraits of Courage, A Tribute to America’s Warriors by George W. Bush will be on display thru December 29, 2018 at the Arizona Heritage Center in Papago Park (1300 N. College Avenue, Tempe.) For additional information, go to https://portraitsofcourageaz.org. Don’t forget the HoneyBaked Ham Campaign for the holidays. As a Community, we can help to feed and house our veterans and their families. More information is available at https://cortebellavets.org/ our-events or https://honeybakedfundraiser.com//fundraisers/ Holiday_Dinner_for_Veterans. The HoneyBaked Ham Co. will donate 20% of a gift card’s value to the Corte Bella Vets. Our 5th Annual Golf Tournament will be held on Sunday, February 24, 2019. Registration is available now at https://birdeasepro. com/cortebellavetscharity golf/. Exciting changes are coming for this event. All proceeds will go to charities, which are helping homeless veterans within the Phoenix Metropolitan area. 63 boxes packed and shipped to United States military deployed Special Forces.

Jon Wendt, CB Vets Member Corte Bella Vets Club is honored to have an opportunity to host some “Rosie the Riveters” and their offspring, “the Rose Buds” on Wednesday, January 9th at 6:00 PM in the Corte Bella social hall. Corte Bella residents and their friends are invited to attend this evening program. Rosie the Riveters were heroines of World War II. With most able-bodied men on active military duty, the country faced a major shortage in the work force dedicated to supporting the war effort with supplies and equipment. The “Rosies” stepped up! Balancing their traditional roles, these ladies rolled up their sleeves. They took on the tasks of building airplanes, ships, heavy armament, munitions and handled the delivery systems for all of those. In 1943, more than 310,000 women worked in the U.S. aircraft industry; or sixty five percent of the industry’s total workforce. From 1940 to 1944, the American women working outside the home went from 12 million to 20 million. In 1944, only 1.7 million unmarried men between the ages of 20 and 34 worked in the defense industry, while 4.1 million unmarried women of the same ages were employed. With remnants of the Great Depression lingering, these ladies soldiered on, worked two jobs, moved into group housing, created grocery clubs, etc. to make ends meet while most of the menfolk were involved in the war. Women with children worked

CB Vet Jon Wendt, Rosies’ G. Ahrlich, E. Blackler, M. Brannan, F. Carter, C. Kellar, D. Holn and F. Ellis; along with Corte Bella WWII Hero, Hugo Tringali (Deceased) separate shifts and shared childcare. They routinely earned less than fifty percent of the wages normally paid to men but paid FICA wages toward Social Security. The “Rosies” were a major factor in winning the war. They initiated the recruitment of women into the military, successfully balanced work outside the home and traditional office setting, and promoted U.S. Treasury War Bonds. We Americans should be most appreciative and always grateful to these groundbreaking women.

LGBTQA Group of Corte Bella News Nancy Stevens The Anacapa social hall was the scene of “Comedy and Cocktails for Charity”, an event sponsored by Corte Bella and Sun City Grand’s LGBTQ and Allies groups in support of one.n.ten, a local non-profit organization which serves and assists LGBTQ youth. Entertainment was provided by Maryann Marttini and Gene Moore, two local comedians who donated their time. All proceeds from ticket sales as well as a silent auction and raffle went to one.n.ten. At the beginning of the night, a check for $2,000.00 was presented to one.n.ten. (By the night’s end, more than $2,500.00 had been collected for the charity.) The event, the first for Corte Bella and Sun City Grand’s LGBTQA groups, was such a hit it promises to become an annual event. Corte Bella’s LGBTQA group is a social club which meets for food and conversation on the last Wednesday of every other month. The group is open to all. For more information you may email Nancy Stevens at blanchmd@aol.com.

SOuL’s 3rd Annual Charity Chili Cook Off Linda Wright, SOuL member What a perfect November evening it was on Monday, November 5th when more than 300 Corte Bella residents gathered to taste chili from eighteen different contestants in the 3rd annual chili cook off contest. The event was thoroughly enjoyed by all and the event’s proceeds will go to support the many charities that receive donations from Smiling Out Loud (SOuL), the ladies charity organization here in Corte Bella.

SOuL held their first 50/50 raffle with four drawings during the event. Generous patrons purchased 2874 tickets. The winners were as follows: #1. Bernie Carney $380 The four judges (former Corte Bella resident, Jim Demchak; HOA Board of Directors President, Michael McVeigh; Anacapa Executive Chef Dan Haywood and Corte Bella Golf Course Food and Beverage Manager, Lisa Sanchez) awarded their Best Chili of the Night prize to Ken Karambelas for his “West Side Chili Blaze.” The Fan Favorite voting resulted in Dick Weeks and Pat Worrell taking First Place as the favorite of the masses with their “Apple Cup Chili.” The Second Place prize was awarded to Eric Gow for his “I Got Gows” chili. The “Red Wine Chili” entered by Deborah Lazear was the third place winner in the Fan Favorite voting.

#2. Carol Courter $365 #3. Pat Worrell $346 #4. Catherine Kelly $346 Dancing on the patio under perfect weather conditions was made possible by Corte Bella resident Keith Fowler, who donated his DJ talent for the event. SOuL would like to thank Keith for his generous support. Also, the West Valley Photo Club brought in a member of their club, Jim Baker, a professional photographer who took complementary photos during the event. Many thanks to Jim and to Chell Mestemacher for arranging this service. What fun the attendees had getting photographed with John Wayne! SOuL would like to also thank the Corte Bella HOA for their support and assistance in helping to make this event so enjoyable for all who attended and rewarding for our organization. Special mention must be made for Executive Chef Dan Haywood, Food and Beverage Manager Jill Machay and to their staff for all the amazing assistance during our cook off. HOA Maintenance Supervisor Richard Lopez and his staff also went the extra mile to make sure logistic-wise this event would go off seamlessly. Finally, the support and assistance of HOA Events Staff Chris Bower and John Bower was so critical to the success of our fund raising event. These two HOA employees worked tirelessly to help setup a very large event and they did it perfectly. SOuL also would like to let the Corte Bella community know that their continuing support of our fund-raising efforts is most appreciated and gratefully received. Thank you.

Corte Bella Adventure Group News Steve Downing One of my favorite hikes on our yearly schedule is Turkey Creek. This seven mile out and back hike is near the Village of Oak Creek in the Verde Valley. The geology and vistas are amazing. For the first two and a half miles, there are gentle ups and downs. After crossing the normally dry Turkey Creek, you begin a gradual climb through pinyon pine and juniper.

With a high clearance vehicle, you can take the road for another half mile and park at the actual trailhead. This area is small and will only handle approximately five vehicles. Parking by the Verde Valley School Road will add another mile to the hike.

Hikes upcoming: • Vulture Peak-Wickenburg • White Tank Mountains • McDowell Sonoran Preserve Browns Ranch • Dixie Mountain Loop Trail

By the time you hit your first switchback, the ascent of the north face of House Mountain begins. As you reach the crest, you have your first views into an ancient caldera from a long extinct shield volcano. From this vantage point, there are great views north toward Wilson and Secret Mountains. There are no directional signs on this trail but there are many basket cairns or what some call caged rocks to give guidance along the way. Besides the area’s natural beauty, the trail offers unusual solitude and tranquility for being so close to a popular tourist area. It would not be unheard of to hike out and back and not see another person. If you would you like to try this hike yourself, here are the trailhead directions: Exit I-17 at Route 179 toward Sedona (Exit 298). Continue toward Village of Oak Creek and turn west on Verde Valley School Road (the second roundabout.) Continue until the pavement ends and travel another half mile to the Turkey Creek Parking Lot.

Corte Bella Watercolor Enthusiasts (CBWE) Deborah Lazear and Sandy Connelly You may have seen us painting in the Social Hall every third Friday but you wouldn’t be able to hear us. We are a quiet group practicing our watercolor art and except for words of encouragement; we don’t talk much. We do, however, smile a lot. The CBWE is celebrating its first year anniversary as an active group organized by CB residents who love to paint. Some of us are raw beginners and others are accomplished artists. Our monthly agenda includes one practice afternoon and one half day lesson led by an accredited artist teacher. The instructors each have a different style and that helps our CBWE members to develop their own individual style. Most of the time, the instructor comes to Corte Bella for the class but we have set up road trips to artist’s studios for other sessions. A highlight in the year 2019 will be a full day class of plein air (outdoors) painting in Queen Creek, lunch at Queen Creek Olive Mill and finishing with a session in the artist’s studio. We will also travel to Sedona to the Artists Open Studio exhibit in the spring.

If you are interested to learn more about our group, contact Deborah Lazear at deborahdlazear@gmail.com or Sandy Connelly at si.connelly@yahoo.com.

Support the Salvation Army Angel Tree Please Be Generous.. Continue Corte Bella’s Tradition of Giving, Caring and Sharing. Corte Bella residents have shown overwhelming generosity by providing Christmas gifts for the many disadvantaged children in the west valley of Phoenix for many years. The Salvation Army Angel tags are on the special Christmas tree in the Fitness Center now and will remain there until December 14th. These tags have a child’s name, age and a wish-list of gifts provided by that child or their parent. Donated gifts should be put under the Christmas tree, unwrapped, with the original Angel tag attached by the end of the day on December 14th. The Salvation Army will take care of wrapping and delivering the donated gifts to each child’s family.

The

The Salvation Army’s Christmas Angel tree will be in the Corte Bella Fitness Center from Wednesday, November 14 to Friday, December 14.

Pick an Angel from the tree which will include the name and age of each child in need in the Phoenix area and a list of that child’s Christmas dream gifts! Bring your unwrapped gifts for that “Angel” with the original Angel tag attached and place it under the tree by December 14! Help make a child’s Christmas dream come true!

Your generosity is most appreciated by the Salvation Army and by the underprivileged children you are so kindly supporting. Thank you for contributing and continuing this worthy effort. Last year, Corte Bella donated at least a dozen bicycles and so many wonderful items like sports equipment, clothing and educational items (books and art supplies.) The Sun Cities Salvation Army West Valley Corps was so impressed and so very grateful to all of you. While we all want to help out during the Holiday Season, please be aware that the Salvation Army continues to aid the needy members of our community throughout the year. If you would like to help out, the Salvation Army will pick up household items you might like to donate. They will also accept donated items at their facility in Surprise. And, the Salvation Army is always looking for volunteers. The Sun Cities Salvation Army West Valley Corps is located at 17420 Avenue of the Arts in Surprise (just off Bell Road on the Avenue of the Arts) and their phone contact number is 623-977-1084.

West Valley Photo Club “Pays it Forward” Chelle Mestermacher On Saturday, October 20th, photographers from the West Valley Photo Club (WVPC) held a complimentary “Portrait Event” for Corte Bella HOA staff. It was our way of saying “Thank You” to Corte Bella for graciously allowing our photography enthusiasts to hold our monthly meetings here at Corte Bella. Jayke Whittington, Jill Machay and the rest of the staff are a real pleasure to work with and are greatly appreciated by us all. Several employees came to have their portraits taken and were given the royal treatment. Some WVPC members are professional photographers; others just came to have fun and maybe learn a portrait-shooters trick or two. Of course, it always helps to have beautiful and handsome models! The particularly friendly weather only added to the experience. Once again, thank you CORTE BELLA, for all you do for our club!

What’s Happening in Corte Bella For Pam Lawrence, compiled by Linda Wright

Sunday Cabaret October 14 It was another wonderful Sunday evening with the Thaddeus Rose Duo making their music magic that had everyone dancing the evening away. Delicious bistro food from the Anacapa kitchen helped make this another Corte Bella successful cabaret.

Grilling Basics for Everyone November 1 Chef Dan held another grilling class, and this time it was for a mixed class of participants who thoroughly enjoyed his wonderful teaching menu featuring pizza on the grill, grilled veggies, shrimp and beef skewers with an amazing sauce and the best dessert ever with grilled fresh peaches. Absolutely a wonderful learning experience.

Stencil on Boards – Holiday Signs October 17 The “art” room (otherwise known as the Bacara Room) was full of Corte Bella residents channeling their creative side under the careful instruction of a professional artist. The end results were impressive and varied. What a lovely way to make something wonderful for our holiday decorations!

Jason Love’s Laugh Out Loud Comedy Show November 2 A full house of Corte Bella residents welcomed Jason back to our stage with his two fellow featured comedians Johnny Beehner and Omar Covarrubias. What a fun night of laughs, chuckles and snickers. This was a really great night of clean and enjoyable comedy. What a bargain to sit and laugh with these talented comedians from the LA scene.

Day Trip to Algodones, Mexico October 19 It was an early start, but a hardy bunch of seasoned Corte Bella travelers ventured out to the border town of Algodones, Mexico for a day of shopping, dining and a bit of drinking too. Everyone made it back across to border in time for the trip back to Corte Bella.

Tubac Fall Arts and Crafts Show Visits to Mission San Xavier del Bac

Corte Bella Fall Marketplace

November 3

Corte Bella’s annual Fall Marketplace did not disappoint displaying many wonderful vendors hosting booths with their special wares. It was a great opportunity to support small businesses right here in our own back yard.

A bus full of Corte Bella residents traveled south below Tucson and enjoyed the annual Arts and Crafts Festival in the historic town of Tubac. After some retail therapy and some lunch, the group went to the Mission San Xavier del Bac, the White Dove of the Desert, where they were treated to a docent tour of this wonderful Arizona landmark. It was a day full of learning and appreciation for what Arizona can offer.

November 4

Verde Canyon Train Ride Trip November 10 Fifty five Corte Bella residents went by bus (with our trusty All Aboard America driver, Mike, at the wheel) to from Clarksdale and rode the Verde Canyon Train from there to Perkinsville and back. The group filled two first class cars and enjoyed a buffet lunch, a champagne toast and other libations during the four hour train trip. The fall colors were so appreciated and the beauty of the canyon as well. Perfect weather made this such a wonderful excursion into the peaceful and undisturbed natural beauty that is Arizona.

HEALTH & FITNESS

Corte Bella Tennis Club News MaryLee Planer All five courts were pulsating with the sound of tennis balls meeting rackets on Saturday morning, October 20th, as members of the Corte Bella Tennis Club (CBTC) gathered for the annual Homecoming Tournament. Organized by social cochairs Colleen Miller and Joel Piaskowski, and orchestrated by CBTC Vice President Doug Kitts, this non-competitive event was an opportunity to reunite with returning snowbirds, get some exercise and, most of all, have some fun! That evening in the Corte Bella social hall, thirty seven members, spouses and guests enjoyed a pot luck dinner with a wide variety of tasty dishes. Reno Peterson was named “Best Dressed” for the theme of the tournament, which was wearing your favorite high school or college colors. Reno’s award was a rookie Brent Favre football trading card — from when Favre was originally drafted by the Atlanta Falcons. Seven door prizes were raffled off, ranging from a VIP car wash certificate from Jackson’s Car Wash to a crystal “tennis theme” paperweight. Undoubtedly, the highlight of the evening was the CBTC Board Officers performing their “W-E-L-C-O-M-E” cheer complete with pompoms! To top things off, Rick Gratian entertained members with his magic tricks. It left many people saying…”How did he do that?” The CBTC welcomes new members of all skill levels, and recent additions to our community are particularly encouraged to try us out. For those of you who have played in the past and want to get back into the swing of things, there is “Drop-In” open play on the courts on Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning from 6:30 AM to 8:30 AM. You can drop in any time you want to play for 30 minutes or an hour or more. We are a fun group! And, of course, tennis provides excellent physical activity. Annual dues are just $15. For additional information, check out the court side tennis bulletin board.

Back row left to right: Kathy Moody, Sarah Smith, Colleen Miller, Linda Sivakoff, Sam Pechkurow, Rick Gratian, Arthur Bartlett, Reno Peterson, Mary Lee Planer, Russell Hardsock, Cathi Solla & Ed Miller. Front Row left to right: Joel Piaskowski, Jolene Piaskowski, Mark Sivakoff, Jack Shifman, Ming Fu, Donna Norton, Doug Kitts & Dale Huffman. On Sunday, December 2nd at 3:00 PM, United States Tennis Association (USTA) Consultant Jason Jamison will conduct an introductory clinic. His hands-on approach will introduce new players to the game as well as provide easy pointers for improving strokes. Jason provides quick and effective feedback for players of all skill level. Equipment will be provided for those who need it.

See you on the courts!
