ASSOCIATION
Another Corte Bella Blessing to Behold Wow, is what I think to myself every time I see the latest CB Times after it is sent to me for final approval. This represents the 46th monthly article that I have written for the CB Times since joining the Corte Bella Team. That said, I don’t think I have written one to date that I was more passionate about. I recently learned that our CB Times editor of the past two years has decided to step down in January in order to pursue a very exciting personal Mike Arrington, Corte Bella Country Club Association, Inc. General Manager opportunity. Each month when I review the final draft copy, I reflect on how much work it takes to produce and how hard she must have worked to make it happen. The Corte Bella resident volunteer I am speaking of is Sharon Orlopp for those of you who do not know. Sharon is one of those rare

people that you just hand something off to and never worry about it again. She is literally a professional editor. All of her work is done behind the scenes with no maintenance, no drama and simply the best of results. Also, you know the final product of her work will reflect class and attention to detail each and every time. Given the nature of what she is responsible for, high quality is obviously important. The CB Times has become the face of the Corte Bella community over the years and Sharon has protected the integrity of this publication as if it were her own. Although Sharon may be the least recognized volunteer in the community, she has certainly been one of the most valuable in terms of workload and accountability. I hope the next time you pick up the new monthly copy of the CB Times, you will remember that people like Sharon are responsible and that without them, there is no CB Times to enjoy. Sharon, you are truly an amazing individual and your efforts are greatly appreciated by the Corte Bella team. Now, carry on young lady and all the best of luck in your newest adventure.
Board Talk We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and a joyous New Year’s Eve celebration. The many holiday activities throughout Corte Bella along with the many dining opportunities should have all of us spending more time at the Fitness Center in the coming year. The Michael McVeigh, HOA President Board Talk article was originally intended to allow all members of the Board to share information they think might be of interest. We’ll start 2018 with a little humor (in the Rumor) from Director Bob Rosenberg.
Rumors – by Bob Rosenberg Every so often someone gives the Corte Bella rumor mill an extra turn of the old crank and we are off to the races. Now might be the time to discuss rumors and why they can be a problem. As a noun rumor means a circulating story or report of uncertain or doubtful truth. As a verb it means to be circulated as an unverified account. Some rumors are harmless such as the three headed Martian you read about while waiting and checking out at the supermarket. Other rumors can be downright destructive and hurtful. If you don’t believe that, ask a celebrity or a politician. Trying to determine the source of a rumor can be as problematic as trying to determine the origin of man. My personal opinion is that some rumors are due to unintentionally passing on something that people hear without fully checking out the source. In other cases, I think that people start rumors just to amuse themselves like pulling the fire alarm in school and shouting fire. Now let’s get down to specifics regarding our community. We have a rumor mill that I personally think at times might be the envy of the West Valley. It is faster than a speeding email and able to leap tall buildings in a single click. The next thing you know is that misinformation, innuendo, rumor or whatever takes on a life of its own. When you hear a rumor just take it for whatever its worth, which is very little. If it
is about something that is of concern to you, check it out with someone who knows what is going on rather than passing it on down the road. We do have a website and quite a bit of information is available. If you can’t find the answer to your question, you can contact the community manager, the HOA office or send an email to a member of the Board. The attendance of residents at Board meetings has dropped over the years and only increases when the rumors starting flying. As members of the Board, we will answer any question except for information that is discussed in executive session. We are residents of the community just like you and hear the same rumors. Obviously we are not sitting on the Board for the paycheck that never comes. This is my third term on the Board and I can honestly say that I have tried to be open and forthright whenever someone asks me a question. Please just try to treat rumors for what they are worth, very little. However, you are still free to believe in three headed Martians. 2018 Election - Candidate Meet & Greet nights are planned for January 17 and 22 in the Social Hall at 6:00 pm. The next Board Workshop will be Friday, January 19 at 9:00 am and the next Board Meeting, Wednesday January 24 at 10:00 am. Your thoughts, opinions and concerns are very important to me as your Board President. Contact me at any time at mmcveigh3@cox.net/623-433-9921.
Ultimately, it’s your experience that matters. To be sure, we’re proud of our 29 years of experience in senior living. But, to us, what really matters is your experience at our communities.

Christmas Stockings from Santa for Our Troops – WOW! Larry Leighton On October 24th the Corte Bella Vets, at Jane Jorrish’s urging, announced an “Adopt A Platoon” project aimed at providing Christmas Stockings to deployed service members. Each platoon represented 20 service members. We set a goal of providing stockings filled with $15 - $20 worth of requested items for FOUR platoons’ (80) stockings for our first ever attempt at this kind of project. On November 15th, volunteers met in the Bella Stanza room to sign cards and stuff stockings. It was another great example of Corte Bella resident’s caring for our military members, especially those deployed overseas. The results far exceeded expectation! We filled and shipped Christmas stockings to Afghanistan for over NINE platoons – 190 stockings! Thank you to all who donated stocking, items for stuffing, labor, and cash to buy requested items and pay for shipping!

Thank You! Continuing the Tradition of Sharing at Christmas
Salvation Army Christmas Angel Tree 2017 Linda Wright This year the residents and staff of Corte Bella demonstrated the true spirit of Christmas by caring and sharing with others. The Salvation Army Christmas Angel Tree in Corte Bella’s Fitness Center had 175 Angel tags with the names and wish lists from disadvantaged children in the West Valley. Our community’s response was amazing with a wonderful array of donated gifts that provided a joyful Christmas celebration for these special children and their families. Of special note were the ten bicycles under the tree at different times during the month-long collection. Thank you for your generous and loving contributions to this worthwhile program. The Salvation Army Sun Cities West Valley Corps thanks you and salutes each of you for your kindness. Please remember that the Salvation Army continues to aid the needy members of our community throughout the year. If you would like to help out in other ways, remember the Salvation Army will pick up any household items you might wish to donate. They also accept donations at their facility in Surprise. The Salvation Army is always looking for volunteers.

We are lucky to have a painting teacher, Marilyn Watkins, right here in Corte Bella who will teach a few classes over the year; location for classes TBD. This group is open to anyone who would like to try their hand with watercolors. Our 2018 dates at the Social Hall are 1/17, 2/28, 3/21, 4/21, 5/18. All classes start at 1:30 for 2 ½ hours. Exploring our 38th State Joel Piaskowski The beauty of our great country has many destinations. One of those is the Centennial State, or as we all know it, Colorado. On August 1, 1876 (28 days after the Centennial of the United States), U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant signed a proclamation admitting Colorado to the Union as the 38th state and earning it the moniker “Centennial State.” I recently went there for a week to see the natural wonders of a specific area in the state. My first few days were spent exploring Rocky Mountain National Park.
Elk in Rocky Mountain National Park species of birds. The park is home to some 2,000 to 3,000 elk in summer along with bighorn sheep, moose, and mule deer. Trail Ridge Road, (also known as U.S. Route 34), is 48 miles long and connects the eastern and western sides of the park. If you go during the summer months, you have to take the drive. Unfortunately, when I was there in late September……Yes, late September, the road was closed due to ice and snow already!
The Rocky Mountain National Park Act was signed by President Woodrow Wilson on January 26, 1915, establishing the park boundaries and protecting the area for future generations. Rocky Mountain National Park encompasses 265,461 acres of federal land, with an additional 253,059 acres of U.S. Forest Service wilderness adjoining the park boundaries. Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the highest national parks in the nation, with elevations from 7,860 to 14,259 feet. Sixty mountain peaks over 12,000 feet high provide scenic vistas. Even though I knew about the effects of the high altitude on the body, I had to take it easy the first couple days of hiking. One can get tired and short of breath quite easy in the higher altitudes.
After three days at Rocky Mountain National Park, I drove over Rabbit Ears Pass (elevation 9,426 feet) to Steamboat Springs. The summit has the shape of rabbit ears, which displays two large columns of basalt rock. The Rabbit Ear Pass highway was started in 1911 and was not completed until 1917. The city is named after the Steamboat Spring, located near the presentday library and the old train depot. The spring itself was so named because its bubbling sounded like a steamboat to early settlers. The city is an internationally known winter ski resort destination. How nice it was to relax by the stream flowing through downtown, having a glass of wine and a cheese plate surrounded by the beautiful yellow and gold aspen trees of fall. During the summer, Steamboat (as it called by the locals) is a playground for kayaking, cycling, fishing and hiking. Another attraction of the town and area are the hot springs. The Yampa Valley and surrounding area contain several geothermal hot springs. I had the pleasure of taking a night hike to one of the springs which was suggested by the owner of the B&B I stayed at. The beauty and serenity of sitting in the spring with a crisp night time temperature and a clear sky with thousands of stars, was beyond compare.
Rocky Mountain National Park is home to many species of animals, including nearly 70 mammals and almost 300
If you have not seen our Centennial State, I suggest you add it to your bucket list!

World of Friends Evie Hansen You won’t have blisters on your feet, soggy clothes or a need to carry a 40 pound backpack at the January 8th World of Friends gathering. That was the experience of Corte Bella residents, Bill and Lynda Persson while trekking part of the 500 mile pilgrimage called Camino de Santiago (also known as The Way of St. James) in France and Spain. You will be seated in a comfy chair as they share their story and about their preparation for an upcoming 2018 Camino de Santiago trek. World of Friends brings together Corte Bella residents and renters with international interests for an evening of good food and wonderful conversation. Some in our group have lived and/or worked overseas. Some have traveled internationally while others come because of their interest in the world.
To keep things simple, the potluck menu is “finger-food” so we can keep the emphasis on fellowship and conversation. Attendees bring their beverage of choice. We meet on the second Monday of each month in a resident’s home. Our next gathering will be held on Monday, January 8th at 5:00 pm at the home of Evie & Randy Hansen who live at 22628 N. San Ramon Drive. Our February gathering will be at the home of Roy and Virginia Dent on Monday at 5:00 pm on February 12, 2018. The Dent’s live at 22812 N Arrellaga Drive. Please contact Merrill Ewert (at merrill.ewert@gmail.com) to be added to our email list.
Incredible Holiday Carving Display Kat Lonnquist Bonnesen My brother and his wife, Eric and Wendi Lonnquist, split their time between Corte Bella and Bend, OR. My husband, Rog, and I recently joined them on the snowbird wagon as an escape from Minnesota’s brutal winters. In Corte Bella they live in the Santa Catarina neighborhood, known for its extravagant light displays. Wendi and Eric Lonnquist At Eric and Wendi’s house, the extravagant Christmas displays take place on the inside, rather than the outside. Once you enter their home, you will discover hundreds and hundreds of incredible handmade carvings! For many years, Eric has had an infatuation with wood. His interest dates as far back as his preteen years in Lincoln, NE. Our Dad bought a little jig saw for Eric to keep his mind off a doctor’s refusal to give him clearance to play midget football because of his allergies. Having a jig saw led to Eric’s creation of an arsenal of wooden weaponry. This enabled the eight Lonnquist siblings and the neighborhood kids to be well supplied for their cops and robbers and cowboy and Indian battles. Years later, after finishing law school and having a nine-month old daughter and a Christmas tree with no ornaments, he began to fill the void. Did he ever . . . Eric now has a houseful of decoys and shorebirds to go along with hundreds of Santas, snowmen, angels, Christmas trees and
incredible ornaments of all varieties. His creations also include a crèche, an ark with over 70 pairs of animals, as well as sea themed objects to please his understanding wife. It is truly an amazing display! Unbelievable to me is that this mass of carvings remains even after generous gifting to his children, friends and grateful siblings. May I safely say compulsiveness resides somewhere in his genes?!? During the Christmas season, Eric spends a good bit of time unboxing and setting out many of his creations. He welcomes visitors to come and look through the amazing collection. Sometime in early 2018, he will carefully return them to storage while he gets busy carving anew. Each year, Eric creates new and different carvings. One of his next creations will be working with century old pieces of barn wood, making shiplap creations for all of us to enjoy. We’re thankful that Eric spends many days on the golf course here and in Bend . . . or Oregon’s forests would be in jeopardy.

It’s Your Health… And Your Future Laurel Gedan Despite our best efforts to the contrary, my husband and I are getting older. I’m not positive, but my guess is that you are too. I think researching and planning for things before they happen makes it easier when things actually do happen. So, I’m doing my best to keep informed about the complex world of health care for seniors – and the many programs available here in the West Valley. Recently, I was fortunate enough to have been asked to serve on the Sun Health Foundation Board. This is allowing me to learn a lot about wellness programs and assistance programs that are offered to those of us who live here. Fifty years ago, when Sun City first opened, a handful of residents realized if they wanted to get good health care “way out here” in the West Valley, it was up to them to make it happen. So, these seven residents established Sun Health as a non-profit enterprise and began a fund-raising effort to build a local hospital. In 1970, Boswell Hospital opened its doors. It was built on land donated by the Boswell Co., and a great deal of the funds for the hospital came about because of the generosity of those first residents of Sun City. Boswell Hospital has been ranked among the top 100 hospitals in the United States.
states. In an effort to insure these hospitals maintained cuttingedge medical care and equipment, Sun Health Foundation elected to continue as the philanthropic arm of the Banner hospitals here. For example, Sun Health Foundation raised money to construct the state-of-the-art catherization lab that now exists at Del E. Webb. Community support built a state-of-the-art hybrid operating room in use at Boswell Hospital. Sun Health continues to raise money to support the Banner Sun Health Research Institute located in Sun City; one of the most renowned Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Research Centers in the world. And, of great importance to many of us, is an up-coming project to help fund the expansion of the Banner MDAnderson Cancer Centers programs right here at the Boswell and Del E. Webb Medical Centers.
In 1988, again through community fundraising by Sun Health, Del E. Webb Medical Center was opened to serve the residents of Sun City West and the city of Surprise. Imagine…..both of our local hospitals exist in large part because of the generosity of West Valley residents just like us.
There are many more things that the Sun Health Foundation finances and offers to all of us. Over the next several months, I’ll be writing about some of these programs. If you’re like me – you realize that the more you know about what’s available for you, the better off you’ll be when you encounter a health/aging problem.
In 2008, Sun Health sold the two hospitals to Banner Health, a non-profit organization that owns and operates hospitals in seven

Corte Bella Volunteers Decorate for the Holiday Monday, November 27
A capable cadre of creative volunteers met on Monday, November 27 to decorate the Anacapa and the Social Hall for the Christmas season. A total of five trees were decked out in beautiful decorations as well as tabletop decor for all the tables in the Anacapa. The fireplace mantel and the bar mantel were dressed up for the holidays. Swags and wreaths were hung all around the Anacapa and outside in the breezeway. Along with the decorative lights strung by the HOA maintenance staff, Corte Bella was transformed into a Christmas dreamland.

At the end of a concert of much loved Christmas music, Corte Bella residents were treated to a rare “snowfall” provided by the stars of this special TAD Management musical production’s premier. The evening was enjoyed by more than 200 Corte Bella residents and was a wonderful way to begin the “most wonderful time” of the year.
Cooking with Chef Dan - Party Ideas Corte Bella’s Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony and Buffet Wednesday, November 29
The Corte Bella Chorus performed wonderful Christmas music while residents dined on a fabulous and delicious buffet prepared by the Anacapa. More than 150 residents enjoyed seeing Santa arrive just in time to light the community’s Christmas tree in the Anacapa, which signaled the opening of the holiday season in Corte Bella.
Friday, December 8
It was a delicious culinary demonstration for more than 30 residents who enjoyed watching Corte Bella’s talented Executive Chef, Dan Haywood, prepare recipes for entertaining. Chef Dan cooked crostini three ways, delicious empanadas, stuffed new potatos with smoked salmon, mini quiches, fresh fruit tarts, and amazing chocolate eclairs. Chef Dan’s timely presentation provided all in attendance with ideas for holiday parties. Chef Dan also thanked Corte Bella volunteers Linda Leonard and Sue Dziegielewski for their efforts throughout the year to promote and administer the cooking demonstration classes.

SOuL Annual Charity Holiday Bake Sale and Boutique
The Community That Sings Together at Christmas
The Corte Bella Social Hall was filled with Christmas cookies (1200 dozen cookies baked and packaged), holiday breads, toffee, pretzels, salsa and other wonderful treats all lovingly prepared by members of Smiling Out Loud (SOuL), a Corte Bella women’s charity support organization. A boutique of holiday gift items also provided shoppers with opportunities to buy wonderful holiday gifts. SOuL raffled off a basket filled with over $2,000 worth of gift cards. This festive and wonderful event benefited SOuL’s primary charity, Eve’s Place, which supports victims of domestic abuse.
There were jingle bells and a lot of folks singing “FA LA LA LA” at the 2nd annual Community Holiday Sing-a-Long. The Corte Bella chorus lead the group through an evening of singing wonderful songs of the season. A humorous Christmas Trivia contest rounded out the event. Many thanks to the Anacapa for providing cookies and drink for the festivities. Thank you to the Corte Bella Chorus for making this such an enjoyable part of the Christmas Season in our community.

Corte Bella’s 2nd Annual Christmas Golf Cart Parade Wednesday, December 13
Tempe’s 19th Annual Fantasy of Lights Boat Parade Saturday, December 9
Corte Bella took three bus loads of 156 residents to the other side of the Valley to Tempe Town Lake to view and enjoy the boat parade with 50 boats decorated with holiday lights and décor. The lovely weather, the live Christmas music and the fireworks at the end of the boat parade made for an enjoyable night.
What a wonderful sight it was to view 19 golf carts decorated in themes from “Santa Does Hawaii” to scenes from the Nativity at the 2nd Corte Bella Christmas Golf Cart Parade. The creativity of all the parade participants was truly something to behold. The contest judges selected Craig and Sharon Orlopp’s entry with the theme “Frozen” (featuring Olaf from the movie) as the winning golf cart for this year’s event. Congratulations to you both, Craig and Sharon! After the parade, which was cheered on by much of the community lining the route around the circle, participants and residents enjoyed a delicious buffet dinner prepared by the Anacapa.

Golf in Full Swing Debbie Parks-Dube January is here and another holiday season is behind us. I hope everyone enjoyed the season and made great memories with friends and family. I can’t believe it is 2018! The golf club is now entering the busiest time of the year. There are many fun golf events in January: the Battle of the Sexes, women’s club championship, men’s senior club championship, and a couple’s tournament. The Corte Bella Grille has been staying busy
with our breakfast on the weekends and lunch seven days a week. Remember you don’t have to be a golf club member to come in and enjoy a bite to eat or a cocktail. At our monthly Hole In One party in December, we celebrated aces by Janet Oswald and Mike Terrell. The Hole in One party is always fun; our members really know how to have a good time! Keep making those aces so we can continue to have something to celebrate! Happy New Year to you all. Let’s make 2018 great!

Corte Bella Tennis MaryLee Planer Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from about 7:30 8:00 am Corte Bella Tennis Club (CBTC) members of all sorts — young, old and older, female and male, good, better and best — begin arriving on Courts 1, 2 and 3. It’s pretty informal as players pair up for doubles and begin to play. Occasionally there may be more than the courts can handle — that would be 12 — but no worries! One person sits out and rotates in after one game when another rotates out. And because some like to play early or late, for a short while or a long time, it always works! On occasion, however, Australian rules — 2 against 1 — may be necessary.

The drop-in, open play Guru is Ken Egide, and participants owe him a debt of gratitude for his long tenure of service. He is often on hand to coordinate play with teams rotating every five games. Many players have gotten to know each other from year to year, and the reunions when snowbirds return are always fun and gratifying! For beginning and less experienced players, doubles drop-in provides the opportunity to compete against higher level players — which improves their games! And the rotating nature insures not only the variety but the chance to be successful…at least some of the time! CBTC welcomes new members, and with annual dues of just $15, anyone can give it a try! Besides excellent physical activity, it’s a great social activity, as evidenced above. For additional information, check out the court side tennis bulletin board. See you on the courts!
