ASSOCIATION
A Decade of Dreams Did you know that you are reading the number one source of information related to what is going on at Corte Bella? Well, you are. The CB Times contains everything you ever wanted to know about Corte Bella and then some. More importantly, it has for ten years now. That’s right, this is the ten year anniversary edition of the Mike Arrington, Corte Bella Country Club Association, Inc. General Manager CB Times. During all of the years I have been in the community management industry, I have never seen a publication come close to the quality of our CB times. In fact, most communities simply have a newsletter of a few pages or so. The CB Times goes to all 1650 addresses of record and more. You can find it at the Anacapa and Spa as well. I was not around to see the initial publications but I have seen it continue to grow and become even more important to the Corte Bella lifestyle over the past four years. It seems to get better with each and every publication. The really beautiful thing about the CB Times is that it is a volunteer production of all Corte Bella residents. It takes many hours of hard work to produce this fantastic product. Some take

the beautiful photos you see every month while other residents are submitting articles based on traveling experiences. Then, there are the articles meant to inform you, promote safety in the community, recipes from the Chef or the occasional self-help story from one of our many experienced residents willing to share. The magazine is chock full of information from who to call if you need information, to when the next party or board meeting will take place. I have written 50 articles for the CB Times myself. I am certain that when most people pick it up to read, it never crosses their mind that so much work, effort and experience went into it. The CB Times has become the number one symbol of Corte Bella Lifestyle over the years. For ten years this month, many of your fellow residents and some that are no longer with Corte Bella have worked tirelessly to produce and grow this great publication. Many of our residents recognize this fact and appreciate it. Others probably don’t give it much thought at all. Now that you know the story and how it came to exist and carry on, I hope everyone will appreciate it even more for what it is; one very fine publication due to a tremendous effort by many. I offer a great and sincere thank you to each and every one who has ever made a contribution to this representation of who the people of Corte Bella really are. Kudos to you all and for an amazing effort. I sincerely hope this product will live on for many, many years. Mike
Board Talk Congratulations to every Corte Bella volunteer that was part of the outstanding effort in producing our Corte Bella Times for the past 10 years. Happy Anniversary to all of you! This magazine has been part of our Community since 2008 and will continue to be our principal source of communications now under the new leadership of Linda Wright. Thank you Linda for standing up Michael McVeigh, HOA President and leading from the front. You know how I feel about people that step up and contribute in a positive and helpful way to do good things for others. The 2018 Super Bowl Party was another outstanding event here in Corte Bella. This was our 4th year doing this for our residents. I was born and raised in Philadelphia and after 52 Super Bowl years, the Eagles finally delivered the goods. Philly Cheese Steak nation will never be the same and Rocky Balboa is now finally ready to retire. I enjoyed working the event again this year with Sandi and Jim Irvin and want to say thanks to our MC, Mike Arrington and his entire staff for another outstanding job. Thanks also to Executive Chef Dan Haywood and his Anacapa team for giving up their Sunday to support our residents. Our Lifestyle Manager, Pam Lawrence and her team of volunteers and staff did an outstanding job on the decorations and door prizes. This is just one more example of the value of our community amenities that many residents support. The Corte Bella Board of Directors 2018 Election has been reset for 30 days due to a minor glitch in the implementation of the Electronic/Paper ballot process. The withdrawal of one candidate after the voting began also raised some concerns and questions by residents that already voted. At a special Board meeting on February 6th, the Board voted to reset the election and start over. We will only use the paper ballot system as we have done in the past with hope of moving into an online process in the future. There are five (5) candidates competing for three (3) vacancies. The residents submitting interest forms are: Paul Knowles, Michael
McVeigh, David Saulnier, Read Smith and Thomas Testa. Reset instructions have already been sent out to all homeowners by our General Manager with reset voting instructions. We hope everyone had an opportunity to meet the candidates and ask them important questions. The election results will now be announced at the annual meeting which is scheduled for April 2, 2018 at 6:00 pm. Committee Board Liaison’s or Committee Chairs will make brief presentations on 2017 results and plans for 2018 at this meeting while votes are being tabulated and verified. We’ll also share the final 2017 financial results and 2018 goals. In 2017, we had more than 120 new residents move into Corte Bella. We hope you will attend this annual meeting and get to know who the fantastic talented and caring volunteers are and what projects they are doing on our behalf. The 2018 Organizational meeting will now take place on May 2, 2018 at 10:00 am. This meeting will determine who the Corte Bella Board of Directors’ officers will be for 2018/2019. All residents are welcome and encouraged to attend. Your thoughts, opinions, and concerns are very important to me as your Board President. Contact me, anytime, at mmcveigh3@cox.net or 623-433-9921.

Loyalty, Long Standing – 10 Years (and more) at Corte Bella Linda Wright This March is the 10th anniversary of the CB Times, the official magazine of Corte Bella. With the first issue in March of 2008 to this one in March 2018, the community publication has become an important way to communicate and promote Corte Bella life. Many who reside here may not realize that there are a number of First Service employees who have been working at Corte Bella for as long or longer than the magazine has been published. Four of these persons began their Corte Bella work in the Anacapa; three of them remain there today and one now works with the Lifestyle Manager. Anacapa Executive Chef Daniel Haywood and Server Steven Haytasingh (continuous employment for Steven except for a short time) are both 10 year veterans of the Anacapa. Daniel Hernandez, also a Server, has the distinction of beginning his Corte Bella job in 2006 when the restaurant was run by the golf course owner at the time, making him a 12 years employee of Corte Bella (minus a short stint working in a bank.) Jayke Whittington, now a Lifestyle Maintenance Technician, began his Corte Bella career as a dishwasher in the Anacapa 10 years ago. These four gentlemen have seen a lot over the year in regards to Corte Bella and their insight is of worthy of note and consideration. After taking their photo together, I asked them some questions about the CB Times. All four fine fellows agreed that the CB Times has improved over the years and they agreed that it remains a vital source of information for the community. All felt that the CB Times helps to promote the events and activities that are offered to the residents. They stated that the publicity the magazine generates is an effective tool to help keep Corte Bella the excellent community it is today. When asked how could the magazine could be improved, several felt that photography of the
(From L-R) Daniel Hernandez, Executive Chef Daniel Haywood, Jayke Whittington and Steven Haytasingh facilities needs to be updated before being used in the magazine. It was interesting and inspiring to learn how these long time employees valued the CB Times. Thank
you to Chef Dan, Daniel, Steven and Jayke for your obvious dedication to Corte Bella. You are all appreciated and valued.

Congratulations On 10 Years! From Pam Lawrence, Corte Bella Lifestyle Manager “Congratulations to the Corte Bella Times on celebrating 10 years of publishing. What a great accomplishment! This magazine keeps readers abreast of all that Corte Bella has to offer and more. I remember the first time I read the magazine. I was so interested in all the valuable information it offered. It also gave me a perspective of Corte Bella which helped immensely as I transferred to my new position as Lifestyle Manager a year
ago. I was so impressed with the quality, content, pictures and information it provided that I made sure I read every page. Lastly and most importantly, I would like to thank and congratulate the team of editors, contributors, and Corte Bella volunteers who work hard and strive to create content readers want. Without you all, this magazine would not be the success it is today!”
From Sharon Orlopp, former Editor of the CB Times “Congratulations to the CB Times for achieving a ten-year anniversary milestone!! The community magazine is a wealth of information for residents, potential residents, and guests. It is chock full of fabulous events, interesting articles, and lists of clubs and interest groups.
at one point or another. It is a shared experience that has enriched all our lives. Regina Saborsky and Janice Aiken were the phenomenal editors before Dave Johnson and I began overseeing the CB Times. Regina and Janice were fabulous Sherpas as they guided Dave and I through the editing process.
I was very fortunate to be the editor of the CB Times from October 2015 until February 2018. What amazes and impresses me is the incredible generosity of residents---we always have an amazing amount of content, creativity and photos about life in Corte Bella as well as interesting information about travels around the world from residents.
A very special shout-out goes to Linda Wright. Linda was the editor of the CB Times in 2009 and then later became responsible for managing the event content as well as being a prolific writer of many articles. Linda has been named editor of the CB Times and there isn’t a better person to take the CB Times to the next level. Linda attends almost every event in Corte Bella and cherishes her relationships with residents.
I moved to Corte Bella in August 2015 and I have met at least six or seven people who have been editors of the CB Times
Congratulations on 10 years!”
From David Wright, Corte Bella Website Coordinator “Congratulations to the Corte Bella Times staff, current and past, on this, the 10th anniversary of its publication. The first issue came off the presses 10 years ago, in March 2008. One of the first articles to appear was a contest to name the magazine. As we all know, Corte Bella Times was the winner, and that’s what it’s been called ever since. The initial issue featured articles about the Fitness Center and the Anacapa Restaurant, with the traditional letters from the editor, the General Manager (GM), and the Board President. Today’s issues include monthly messages from the GM and the Board President plus new and exciting recipes from Chef Dan Haywood, travel articles about exotic places, articles about club and interest group activities, articles about food and wine, and much more. The magazine has almost always been and continues to be authored and edited in-house by volunteer Corte Bella residents. The magazine has chronicled Corte Bella’s growth over the years, and each issue has been
preserved electronically on the Corte Bella website. If you have some spare time, you might find it interesting and educational to peruse some of these back issues. They are located under the Community Publications directory under the Resource Center tab on the website’s main menu.”

History of the Corte Bella Vets Donna Norton Waiting on the 6th hole to tee off, John Wendt mentioned to Larry Leighton that a Corte Bella Veteran group would be something to bring our community together. Four years later it is a vibrant organization committed to advancing knowledge, helping veterans, fellow neighbors, and active duty military. We welcome anyone interested in supporting veterans and the different programs to promote patriotism, fellowship, and service to all Veterans and their families.
provide the rest of the funds. Over the course of four years we have donated over $110,000 to worthy charitable organizations. The charity that provides the most profound gratification is through the local Northwest Valley VA Clinic. We were approached by them with an underwear/sock drive and later asked to help individual veterans with financial challenges that were otherwise unfulfilled. The local representative describes men and women in “tears” as they realize there is a charity willing to help them with a past due utility bill, auto repair, rent, mortgage, insurance. The note below is from one of the recipients.
We wrote our by-laws in 2015 and applied for 501C3 status with the Internal Revenue Service, receiving approval within a few months of application. The entire organization established ground rules for charitable giving ensuring that any recipient must provide at least 90% of every dollar to directly help veterans and their family members. An annual golf tournament funds the bulk of our charitable activities, while raffles, deals with local restaurants, flag sales, member donations, and a grant
Meetings are held the 2nd Tuesday of each month in the Social Hall at 9:00 a.m. and regularly have a time for socializing, speaker, and business meeting to discuss both up-coming activities and worth while causes that members want to consider supporting.
A Brief History of the Drop Toppers of Corte Bella Nancy Wendler As we’re about to end another successful year as the Drop Toppers of Corte Bella, we look back at the growth of our club, to all the fine members who have contributed time to creating our monthly road trips, and to those who work behind the scenes. Our club began in 2011 with just three couples: Gnagis, Yeagers, and Bakewells. By the first road trip, there were 34 members and 17 convertibles. Now we have over 100 convertibles and 200 members! Our very first road trip was April 19, 2010 to Dillon’s at Lake Pleasant. In the eight years since, we have taken day trips to an Arabian Horse Farm, Top Golf, Saguaro Lake, The Aquarium, Musical Instrument Museum, Wickenburg Antique car show, the Phoenix Symphony, and many more. Overnight trips traveled to Prescott and Jerome, Tombstone, Tubac and Parker for golf outings. Our full time resident members took summer runs to the
cool weather of Flagstaff and Sedona. The true success of the club is the participation of so many members in creating trips and those that come along for the great ride. Membership is free.....all you need is a convertible. See you on the road soon!

Corte Bella Vets Feature Corte Bella’s Own John K. Potter John Wendt We are pleased to announce John has agreed to further enlighten us of his vast and diverse career(s)! He will be our featured speaker at the CB Vets monthly meeting, Tuesday, March 13th at 9:00 am in the Anacapa Social Hall. All such meetings are open to the entire CB community. John advised that his primary topic will be ‘Life on an Island’ ...whatever that means! You will definitely enjoy any topic John selects, so we look forward to large turnout!
By way of his background, John is a native Indiana Hoosier and educated at IU and Yale. He served with the United States Air Force in Korea and was often called upon for special assignments due to his Mandarin Chinese Linguistic ability. He followed his patriotic service by turning to the entertainment industry. He started as a lowly Page and rose to Writer, Supervisor and Producer with all four major networks during a span of 44 years. Some of his productions included six Soap Operas, 17 Moviesof-the-Week, 10 years of oversite of the 3 major Beauty Pageants (no pun intended), The People’s Choice Awards for 23 years and several top rated prime time TV series! Now to relax with his lovely and former actress bride, Lynn, he plays golf and authored eight novels. For a further in-depth overview of John’s and other member’s careers, as well as the goals and accomplishments of the CB Vets, check out www.cortebellavets.org.
The Brightest Stars are Those Who Shine for the Benefit of Others. - Anonymous Donna Norton The generosity of our Corte Bella neighbors during our annual clothing drive has once again been exceptional. We collected in excess of THREE tons of clothes (6,000 lbs), over 400 pair of shoes/boots, belts, scarves, ties, and an assortment of other items. The team of Larry Fulcher, Chuck Gale, and Ron Watts realized quickly that BIG cars were necessary to transport the accumulated inventory. Chuck quickly devised a method for sorting clothing so that we could easily identify bags that should go to women vs. men. Our first drop off was to Mary Ellen’s Place, an establishment that assists women veterans by providing a low cost living situation that is comfortable, supportive, and safe. It is helping to prevent homelessness and slowly reintegrating women back into the family and social atmosphere they once cherished. Mary Ellen’s Place worked out a deal with a local thrift shop that volunteered to give them “credit” for any clothes they delivered to them. This deal allowed them to trade for more appropriate sizing and established credits for future residents. A definite win-win for all involved. Our second drop off was to the MANA (Marines, Army, Navy, Air Force) House. They provide a home for formerly homeless male
veterans and assist them in rebuilding their lives by providing support from staff and partners. Both locations announced they could take “NO MORE” and we began dropping off your contributions at St Vincent de Paul. Their program known as Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) aims to help homeless veterans and those at risk of homelessness with the resources to become or remain permanently housed. Corte Bella has once again made a difference in the lives of many we will never know. Thank you for your continued support.

Corte Bella’s New Landscape Committee Gary Ellwanger The Board of Directors recently approved a new Landscape Committee consisting of volunteer homeowners. The new Landscape Committee was chartered to work on your behalf in order to assist the General Manager. Based on a resident survey last year and realtor feedback, Corte Bella’s unique landscaping is the primary reason residents chose to reside in Corte Bella and why so many home “shoppers” become home owners. Since 2006, Corte Bella has contracted with Gothic Grounds Management to perform the majority of our landscape maintenance (without any year-over-year price increases). The purchase of rye grass seed, removal and/or replacement bushes and trees, irrigation system repair, palm tree trimming, cypress tree spraying, tree canopy thinning or height reduction; and granite replacement are contained in the contract as ancillary items at additional costs not included in the monthly maintenance fee. These tasks are either handled by Gothic Ground Management, or industry professional subcontractors based on bidding and selection by the board. First Service Residential is ultimately responsible for oversite of all landscape activities by contract and has done a good job. Corte Bella has many miles of landscaping originally planted about 15 years ago. As with many developers, common areas
were initially overplanted to enhance the look for perspective buyers and with the knowledge that a certain percentage of plantings would die prematurely. Additionally, the Board of Directors established a plant replacement program years ago and an annual budget that continues into 2018 with the assumption that not all planting will last forever and occasionally require replacement. Grass areas continue to become more and more challenging to maintain because of approximately 15 consecutive years of over seeding with annual winter rye grass and some of the warmest seasonal temperatures in modern history. The year 2017 featured the warmest November and December in recorded history. Also, many trees have grown up and are casting shade in areas preventing the grass to grow and fill in the shaded areas. Grass cannot grow without sunlight. These are just some of the issues that will be on the meeting agendas in 2018 for the newly established Landscaping committee working on your behalf. The committee will also be reviewing the annual decorative granite ground cover refreshment schedule and plan established by the Board of Directors, years ago. The committee invites you to attend the monthly meetings and voice your opinion on these and any related matters. We hope to see you in attendance. Times and dates will be established and published soon.

Memphis is well known for its cultural contributions to the identity of the American South. Many renowned musicians grew up in and around Memphis. Two “must stop” are The Blues Hall of Fame Museum and Sun Records. The history of “Da Blues” is presented in an awesome interactive environment at the museum. The triangular building at 706 Union Avenue, which Sam Phillips opened on January 3, 1950, is the “Birth Place of Rock N’ Roll”. It was Sun Records, and music history was made here. On August 1953, fresh out of his high school graduation the previous June, young Elvis Presley walked into the Sun Records offices to record a two-sided acetate disc: “My Happiness” and “That’s When Your Heartaches Begin”. He would later claim he intended the record as a gift for his mother. The rest is history. Sam Phillips also recorded Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, and many more.
A recreation of the chandelier stairs from Graceland in the new hotel.
During the 1960s, the city was at the center of the Civil Rights Movement. Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated by a sniper on April 4, 1968, at the Lorraine Motel in the city the day after giving his prophetic “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech at the Mason Temple. The Lorraine Motel is part of the complex of the National Civil Rights Museum. The exhibits trace the history of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States from the 17th century to the present. Obviously, the number one attraction is Graceland, the home of Elvis. In addition, there is the new, unbelievable Graceland Manor hotel inspired by the original Graceland.
For music fans, Beale Street is a must stop. It is a significant location in the city’s history, as well as in the history of the blues. Today, the blues clubs and restaurants that line Beale Street are major tourist attractions in Memphis. Another attraction is The Peabody Hotel, which is on the U.S. National Registry of Historic Places. Built in 1925, it was the crowned jewel of the South. The Peabody is probably best known for the famous Peabody Duck March. Every day at 11:00 a.m., the Peabody Ducks (yes, real ducks) are escorted from their penthouse home, on the Plantation Roof, to the lobby via elevator. The ducks, accompanied by the
“King Cotton March” by John Philip Sousa, then proceed across a red carpet to the hotel fountain, made of a solid block of Italian travertine marble. The ducks are then ceremoniously led back to their penthouse at 5:00 p.m. Now, let’s talk about Southern cooking and BBQ. Two institutions are just a few blocks walk from the Peabody. Rendezvous has been a landmark for “Memphis” BBQ since 1948 when Charles Vergos started selling ham sandwiches and beer in a basement he B.B. Kings’ Lucille called Rendezvous. Not much has changed since 1948. The original rub created by Charles and Little John, which is still a secret, will make your mouth water. A few blocks in another direction and you find yourself outside the little diner called “Gus’s”. The small unassuming place has a line outside by 11:00 am to get their taste of Gus’s “World Famous” Fried Chicken. Each piece of chicken is made to order using the Bonner family recipe since 1953. Maybe, THE best fried chicken I have ever had. Should your travels take you to Tennessee, you can see firsthand what makes our country so great!

Weekend Getaway in Arizona – Tubac Dave and Linda Wright Arizona offers a rich and diverse culture and geography, featuring many fascinating places to spend a weekend or just a couple days in the middle of the week. We hope to highlight some interesting and affordable places to explore and experience, all within a few hours’ drive from Corte Bella. We’ll kick it off with a trip down south to Tubac. Just 3 hours away, down I-10 and I-19, in the heart of Pima country in Santa Cruz County, lies the bustling community of Tubac. It was one of 24 missions founded by Jesuit missionary Father Francisco Eusebio Kino. Today, the city is a small tourist attraction site with a host of interesting shops and restaurants with a southwest and/or Mexican theme. Our favorite restaurant here is Elvira’s which specializes in tequilas and fine Mexican cuisine. It also has a very interesting gift shop attached for browsing or shopping before or after lunch or dinner. A major attraction is the Presidio, founded in 1752 after the Pima Indian Revolt. Spanish presidios, or forts, were staffed with usually 50 soldiers and their families, which was sufficient to protect the outlying settlement. This one was kept busy by marauding bands of Apaches who had recently migrated into the area. The Presidio San Ignacio de Tubac is now a tourist site under the auspices of the National Parks Service. It takes less than an hour to tour the grounds and watch the introductory video and is well worth the time and the price of admission. One of the Presidio’s commandants and Tubac’s most famous citizen was Captain Juan Bautista de Anza II who built the chapel of Santa Gertrudis and in October 1775, led a party of 300 soldiers and colonists, overland, from Tubac to the Pacific coast, where he founded San Francisco, the city by the bay. Check out more about Tubac at www.tubacaz.com. A short 3 miles to the south along the I-19 Frontage Road, lies the Tumacácori Mission, also founded by Father Kino. The Pima were relocated here from Tubac after they had been pacified in the middle of the 18th c. Also operated by the National Parks Service, Tumacácori is worth a visit. It has a well-preserved church, convent, and other outbuildings as well as an orchard planted along the banks of the Santa Cruz River. Originally founded as Mission San Cayetano along the east side of the Santa Cruz River, it was moved to the west side of the river after the 1751 Pima Revolt and rechristened Mission San José de Tumacácori. You can easily spend 1 to 2 hours wandering the grounds and visiting the museum and gift shop. Two excellent sources of information on Tumacácori are https://www.nps.gov/tuma/ index.htm and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tumacacori_ National_Historical_Park.
Other interesting sites within easy driving distance from Tubac are the Mission San Xavier de Bac, (just off I-19, just south of Tucson), and legendary Tombstone (on Hwy 80) with its multiple daily reenactments of the famous gunfight at the OK Coral between the Earp brothers and Doc Holliday and the Corrals and McLaurys. And if your interests run more towards nature, there are the Kartchner Caverns https://azstateparks.com/ kartchner/ along Hwy 90, south of Benson. Although there are many relatively inexpensive places to stay in the area, the premier spot is the Tubac Resort and Spa. It is located just north of the city and has all the amenities, including three 9-hole golf courses, made famous by the movie Tin Cup. The 18th hole scene was filmed at the Tubac golf course and you can’t go anywhere on the resort without being reminded of the movie.
The resort is on the pricy side, but well worth the additional cost for a short 2- to 3-day stay. The rooms are warm and cozy with gas fireplaces (for the cold winter mornings) and central air (for the not-so-cool summer months), and modern bath rooms with jacuzzi tubs and walk-in showers. You can play golf, go shopping in Tubac, visit the local sites, or just chill out, relax, and take advantage of the many Spa offerings. The Spa has modern men’s and women’s locker rooms, complete with sauna and steam bath and shower facilities. There is also an outdoor jacuzzi in a walledin courtyard where you can enjoy a private snack or lunch after a relaxing massage.
The Stables restaurant offers standard American and local Mexican/Native American fare and is equipped with a full-service bar. The main dining room gives you a panoramic view through floor-to-ceiling windows of the Santa Rita Mountains in the distance and the 9th hole of the Anza course in the foreground. The hole boasts an island green against a bucolic setting of cattle grazing just a few hundred yards away. More information can be found at https://tubacgolfresort.com.

Corte Bella Adventure Group Steve Downing Once a year, the Corte Bella Adventure Group will attempt what is considered a HARD hike. Last year was Skull Mesa and this year, it was Flat Iron in the Superstition Mountains. I wouldn’t call this a hike as much as I would a climb. The elevation gain is 2,781 feet to the Flat Iron summit (5057 ft).
This is one of the most popular day hikes in the Superstition Wilderness, beginning from the Lost Dutchman State Park. We started off with a gradual climb along a clearly marked trail to Siphon Draw. Siphon Draw is a slick rock basin and
a common turn around point for many hikers. The next mile to the top of the Flatiron is not maintained by the park and involves a bit of; okay, maybe a lot of boulder scrambling. Do not bring your hiking poles but do wear gloves as you will be using your hands for balance and climbing the boulders. Just before getting to the top, we found ourselves facing a 12 foot vertical climb. This wall isn’t as bad as it sounds, as there are many foot and hand
holds, plus a small tree growing half way up to grab on to. It is common at this point to wait in line to navigate the wall. It is more or less a “one person at a time” obstacle, creating a choke point for those going up and coming back down. We did manage to explore the area however, and find an alternate route avoiding the wall. The top of Flat Iron offers amazing views of the Apache Junction Valley and beyond.
Corte Bella Adventure Group Cycling Activities Rich Ingram If you like moderate mountain biking, easy mountain biking, fast road biking, leisurely biking or hiking than you should consider joining the Adventure Club on Saturday mornings. We meet at the Anacapa Parking lot and travel via Dove Valley Road east of I 17 to Apache Wash. The parking lot is in the middle of all of the activities so it is a perfect place for everyone to meet upon arrival and agree on a time to return - usually about 1 1/2 hours from arrival time. There is a beautiful, paved bike path with no auto traffic that goes off both east and west from the parking lot. There are numerous mountain biking and hiking trails of varying difficulty
levels. Several of us can accommodate extra bikes on our racks if needed. An optional lunch at the Wild Horse West restaurant often follows the ride/hike.

It’s Your Health and Your Future – The Memory Care Navigator Laurel Gedan On November 22, 2017 the headline in the Arizona Republic read “1970s Teen Idol Dies at 67.” David Cassidy had died due to complications of dementia. In 2004 Ronald Reagan died after having suffered from Alzheimer’s for nearly a decade. And in 2003, my Dad died from Alzheimer’s disease. Most of us have either had a family member, or know of someone, who has been afflicted with a memory disease. It’s a disease that’s catastrophic to the patients, and almost equally catastrophic to their families. When my Dad was ill, little was known about the disease and there was minimal support for the families. The Doctor talked to us about the illness itself, but offered no advice on how to cope with the care issues that occurred every single day. My mother, my sister and I struggled on our own – trying to figure out how to make decisions for and deal with our dignified and accomplished father who now was no longer the man we knew. Our experience was the norm for most families, and not the exception. So in 2013, Sun Health created a Memory Care Navigator Program to help patients and caregivers in the West Valley cope with the emotional, psychological and physical effects of dementia. It’s an excellent program. When you call the Navigator program, a staff member will come to your house and assess the needs of both the patient and
your family. You can call if you merely suspect your loved one may have a memory illness, before any actual diagnosis is made. It’s available for people with any type of dementia or early memory loss. The Navigator will let you know what resources, support groups and assistive services are available to you here in the West Valley. They can tell you about current clinical trials. If you would like – they can collaborate and communicate with your physician. And, most importantly, they will be an ongoing resource for you. My family and I often wished we had someone we could call just to ask “Is this normal?” or “What do you think we should do?” Your Navigator can be that support for you. They are no further away than the other end of your telephone. The Navigators can’t cure the disease... but they will be there to support you during it. Read this next part carefully: there is no charge for this program. No charge. Sun Health feels this program is so important, that they provide this service at no cost to you. The actual costs of the program are funded through the generosity of your West Valley neighbors who contribute to the Sun Health Foundation. If you know of someone who is afflicted with a memory disease, I urge you to call the Memory Care Navigator at (623) 832-9300. I wish it had been available for my family. But it is available for yours. Laurel Gedan is a Board Member of the Sun Health Foundation and a Corte Bella resident. For information on this and other Sun Health programs, call her at (623) 455-9067.
Questions Commonly Asked of the Aesthetician Kathi Dahl - Licensed Aesthetician LASH & BROW TINTING I’ve had many questions recently on Brow and Lash tinting. If you are considering this service, I can offer a few suggestions. First, tinting the brow is like dying your hair. We use a vegetablebased dye from Germany. The esthetician would consult with you on color. Once the color is chosen, then she would mix the tint with the developer. It is then applied with a brush and left to do its work. The service takes less than half hour and can certainly
be an add-on to your facial. It will last anywhere from 2-3 weeks which means no more penciling! Now, let’s talk tinting the lashes. Here is the tricky part... we can only tint what you have. If you have expectations of longer, fuller lashes, you will not be happy with the results. It just depends on what you are looking for. It will certainly darken your lashes which could eliminate mascara. Come in for a brief consultation to determine if this service is for you. Thanks So Much and hope to see you soon!!

Corte Bella Tennis Over the Years MaryLee Planer
Past Presidents of the Corte Bella Tennis Club (CBTC) reminisce: Paul Jacobs (2008-2009) “As the first club President in 2008, we decided to make the club official and wrote the by-laws. We had a full committee with a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer and two members at large to organize the games and tournaments. I enjoyed the friendship and spirit we had in this club. As this was early in the club development, we were a small group. However, as more people moved into Corte Bella, our membership grew. We also organized tournaments followed by a potluck at the pool. The Lanai did not exist back then. The tennis club was a great way to make new friends and to stay in good shape.”
Norma McAllister (2010) “During my tenure, CBTC held the distinction of being the first chartered club in Corte Bella. I suggested we incorporate a dinner into our annual calendar to boost the attendance and the fun! We also started tournaments to get players of all levels introduced to one another in a tennis format. We formed a Tuesday morning ladies’ group and drop-in play which is still in operation today and still very active. The players and the CBTC Board members through the years are to be commended for participating in the various groups and teams, thereby putting Corte Bella Tennis on the map. Hooray for Corte Bella Tennis!”
Jolene Piaskowski (2011) “Wow! Ten years already for our tennis club. I had been on the club board holding other board positions prior to 2011. As President in 2011, our focus was on increasing membership, with good success, adding a dozen new Corte Bella residents. One of my accomplishments was adding more social events, including the very successful Christmas/Holiday Social in a member’s home. It continues to this day, and what better way to conclude a year of great fun?! Of course, I had a great support staff in the other members of the CBTC Board. The addition of the shed for the ball machine during my tenure meant members no longer had to haul it out of the fitness center. I still play tennis and will always cherish all the friendships I enjoy because of the CBTC.”
Kay Mueller (2012)
people. We were a very active group having fun through our club tournaments, potlucks and parties.”
Mary Nasca (2013) “I had the honor of serving during a special time. I completed the building of the Lanai. This was the first physical addition to be proposed to the Corte Bella HOA Board. I remember the many, many meetings held as we moved this concept forward. The Lanai has benefitted our entire community and is available to any resident who would enjoy using it for personal parties, picnics, etc. The club was very thankful that the HOA Board had the foresight to move this project through to fruition. In addition, I made new friendships with club members that have withstood the test of time.”
Joel Piaskowski (2014, 2015 & 2016) “I really enjoyed being President of CBTC for the three years. There are many great memories from this time. One of the best was the club’s adoption of the Girl’s Tennis Team from Sandra Day O’Connor High School in 2014. Club members raised money to help support the team as school budgets for sports was cut back. CBTC members went to watch the girls play their matches which I am sure helped to inspire their play. I remember the day the team came to Corte Bella to pair up with our ladies for doubles matches. All club members commented on what fine individuals these young ladies were. In addition, the laughs and great times we had at tournaments, social functions, and just playing the game we love, will forever be remembered”
Sam Pechkurow (2017 & 2018) “It’s amazing that 2017 has come and gone. I totally enjoyed my first year as President because of the wonderful people that make up the CBTC. Most of the people I have met since moving here in 2006 are tennis people. Hats off to all the past Presidents. They have done an excellent job of setting up the tournaments and social events we all enjoy.”
“I had the privilege of being President during a year of full of challenges. On top of the normal duties, the initial planning of the Lanai occurred. At that time, pickleball players had no place to watch and literally had to stand on tennis court #5. My then Vice President, Randa Storm, and. We’re very busy working working on concept plans and securing bids from contractors. What an experience if you’ve never done that before! The best part was the club members. I made many friends and met really nice

It continues to be very busy around the club. We’ve had the club championships going on and we are gearing up for our men’s and ladies’ member-guest tournaments. The member-guest tournaments are always fun because it is the chance for the members to bring guests from different clubs to play with them. Often times they have people come in from out of town to play in the tournament with them. Who could blame anyone for wanting to be in Arizona in March! We have a couple more hole-in-ones to celebrate. Congratulations to Jan Viall and Don Matthees for their recent Aces.

Pickleball - March 2018 Robin Mandell All Corte Bella Pickleball players join in the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the CB Times! Here’s a brief history of our club over those 10 years: Four Pickleball courts were originally built by Del Webb/Pulte and were ready for play when the other amenities (tennis, bocce, pool, etc.) were completed in 2004. The problem: not many people really knew how to play this new game. Folks started coming out on a casual basis most mornings. More and more people arrived as the sport swept the nation. Our formal club was established in 2012 with 63 members. We charge $25 to join the club (name tag included), and $20 per person annually thereafter. A real bargain considering the Club buys all the balls (almost $3 each) and other equipment, plus sponsoring several social and competitive events each year. At the end of 2017, we had 221 members! Now we have monthly clinics to teach new folks how to play the game - join us. There are a lot of tournaments this time of year, and our Club members are well represented - see photo for just a few of the winners. Congratulations!
