Seasonal Reminders Spring is in the air and with that it’s time again to remind the residents of a few things. All of what I am about to mention is for the benefit of all residents and the product of regular complaints that I receive. In all cases, the complaints are warranted. Although I am asked by Mike Arrington, General Manager
residents to remind other residents about these things weekly, I chose not to become a broken record in an effort to give credit to the vast majority as related to knowing the rules and complying. Make no mistake, most residents understand what the rules and sometimes laws are and choose to obey for the most part. The other side of that is that some choose to ignore the rules and with disregard for their neighbors and fellow residents. To those who comply with the rules, thank you for your consideration and everyone appreciates you. To those who do not follow the rules, we will assume that you are unaware and hope the following is helpful. Jogging and walking in the street are not only dangerous but strongly discouraged especially when wearing dark clothes that do not reflect light after dark. Drivers can’t see you and I hear about this often. Speeding is both a violation and illegal under the law. Please observe the posted speed limits and drive with caution and consideration of the pedestrian traffic. Please stop at the

crosswalks and cart crossings. Please stop at the crosswalks and cart crossing for pedestrians. Help make Corte Bella streets as safe as possible. The Corte Bella declaration’s use restrictions state that “Pets shall be confined to the lot or kept on a leash at all times”. This is also a state statute requirement. This protects other residents from incident as well as the pet’s own safety. Signage is clearly posted in most of the usual locations where this has been a problem. When entering the community, please stop and wait for the gate arm to come down before using your device to raise the arm again. Do not piggy back in behind another vehicle. This helps to avoid damage to the gate and your vehicle. Residents should not challenge anyone entering the community themselves but instead, get the license plate and report what you see. confronting someone entering can be dangerous to you. Also, residents should not share their entry code or entry devices with anyone other than family or allow anyone else to gain entry without reporting to the guard house. Please do not allow anyone under age to drive your golf cart in the community. This is against the rules and the law. It’s fun for the grandchildren but dangerous to others. Drink plenty of fluids in the heat and stay hydrated. It does not take long to dehydrate this time of year and too late when it hits you. Lastly, secure your lot if you leave for the summer. Sufficient lighting, locks and cameras can be very helpful as well as asking a neighbor or hiring someone to watch your property while you are away.
Board Talk CB Times May/June 2018 The Annual Membership Meeting and Board of Director elections are behind us. Congratulations to the newly elected members of the 2018/2019 Board of Directors. Thank you to the staff and volunteers that served as election ballot counters during the meeting. Michael McVeigh, CBCCA HOA Board President The 2018/2019 Board will be: • Michael McVeigh – Reelected • Paul Knowles – Reelected • David Saulnier – Newly elected • Donna Norton • Gary Ellwanger • David Ornstein • Bob Rosenberg The board officer elections will be held this year at the organizational meeting on May 2nd at 10:00 am. This important meeting will determine who the officers will be to represent your Board for the next year. This important meeting will also determine Board Liaison assignments to all of our Committees. Please plan on attending.
over 500 attendees for the Annual Easter Brunch. I’m told this is a single day record for covers at the Anacapa and the entire team did an outstanding job in servicing our customers. Thanks to the Anacapa staff for all you do. Speaking of volunteers in action, the 2018 Corte Bella Volunteer Recognition Night was held on Monday night, April 9th. The evening’s theme was “Helping Hands” to celebrate National Volunteer Recognition Month. This event has become one of my favorite events held in Corte Bella each year. The thing that makes it so special is that everyone in the room is volunteering their time to make our community a better place to live. I shared a quote from Robert Orben: “Here’s to all volunteers, those dedicated people who believe in all work and no pay.”- that certainly applies here. I asked for a show of hands of people that have been volunteering for 1 year, 2 – 5 years, 5 – 10 years and finally over 10 years here in Corte Bella. The largest group of volunteers was in the 5 – 10 year category. Our next scheduled meeting will be the 2018 Organizational meeting May 2, 2018 at 10:00 am. This meeting will determine who the Corte Bella officers will be for 2018/2019. All residents are welcome and encouraged to attend. Your thoughts, opinions, and concerns are very important to me as your Board President. Contact me, anytime, at mmcveigh3@cox.net or 623-433-9921.
We had a very nice turnout at the 2018 Annual Membership meeting and each of the presentations that were made gave attendees a chance to see what our Committees are doing on your behalf. The Committee presentations made at the Annual Membership meeting allowed us to see what was done on behalf of our community in 2017 and also gave us some insight into what we can look forward to in 2018. Many of the “Challenges” and “Wish List” items hopefully will turn into actual projects and action items. Thank you to each of the presenters and their teams that worked diligently to inform attendees of their projects in the pipeline. Highlights from 2017 were impressive and we look forward to even better things in 2018. Copies of all presentations will be posted to the Corte Bella web for review. We are now getting into the summer months and many residents will be heading out of town until the fall. As our busiest time of the year comes to an end, it wasn’t surprising to see that we had

CULINARY
Cold Poached Salmon A recipe from Anacapa Restaurant Executive Chef Daniel Haywood
Executive Chef Dan Haywood, Anacapa Restaurant
4-4 oz portions of Salmon Filet
For the Court Bouillon: 1 carrot, thinly sliced 1 lemon, thinly sliced 1 thinly sliced onion 1 bay leaf 6-8 peppercorns 3-4 whole cloves 2 sprigs parsley 4 sprigs fresh thyme 2-3 cups cold water A bottle of white wine - 2-3 cups 1 Tbsp red wine vinegar
Method: •
Place a layer of thinly sliced carrots and thinly sliced onion or shallots with a thinly sliced lemon into the bottom of a fish-kettle (if you don’t have a fish kettle, you can use a large, heavy bottomed pan with a lid).
•
Add a few sprigs of parsley, thyme, a bay-leaf, six whole black peppers, and three or four whole cloves.
•
Place the fish on top of this and cover with equal parts of cold water and white wine, or with water and a little lemon juice or vinegar (note: you need the acid).
•
Place your fish kettle or pan over a medium heat and let it heat slowly and continue to simmer until the fish is ¾ cooked.
•
Alternatively, you can place it in a moderate oven until it is cooked.
•
The fish must always be put into the bouillon while cold and after poaching be allowed to cool in the bouillon.
Dill Sauce:
1/4 cup good mayonnaise 1/4 cup sour cream. 1/4 cup plain yogurt 1 tablespoon cream cheese, at room temperature 1/4 cup chopped scallions, white and green parts (4 scallions) 1/4 cup minced fresh dill 2 sprigs minced fresh flat-leaf parsley 1 Tbsp lemon juice and zest
Method:
Blend Together in food processor until smooth. Garnish salmon with sauce and a small salad of fresh greens.

Affordable Entertaining The Easy, Stress Free (well, almost) Way Deborah Lazear Corte Bella loves to party and thanks to our many social groups, like Cellar Dwellers, we party BIG. But not everyone is comfortable entertaining at home. Some reasons I’ve heard: too expensive, too much work; “I am exhausted by the time the guests arrive” and many more. Here is where those time management classes from college and business come in. A party for 6-60 is easy and can be accomplished on a budget with some solid, step-by-step planning. Some tips include: •
•
•
Pick a theme: BBQ, Cinco de Mayo, celebrate spring, or anything that anchors your party and gives you direction for decorating and the menu. Help your guests get excited by filling them in on the theme. Maybe you could suggest a color (Valentine’s Day - wear red) or ask them to bring a joke or trivia based around your theme.
Print out your recipes. Write a shopping list for all the ingredients. Shop each store once only. OK, last minute cream or bread is ok but don’t leave major shopping to the last minute.
•
Create a time-line; e.g. on Wednesday before the party I can do this, on Thursday I can do that. Spread the preparation over many days. Try to leave the day before the party free for the unexpected.
•
Set your table, food stations, buffet (whatever fits with your theme) several days before the event. It is fun to look at the decorations and gives you confidence that this will be a great party.
•
If setting up a buffet, put the plates, salads, vegetables first and the protein last.
•
Put sticky notes along with serving pieces on the buffet, serving table, or wherever you will plate the food.
•
Consider quantity. Hors d’oeuvres are usually 2-3 pieces per person for each of 6 items.
•
Decide on beverages. Besides water, will you serve wine and beer only or will cocktails be available? One bottle of wine will give you 5 glasses of 5 ounces each. Buy well in advance to save money with coupons and the “30% off on six bottles or more” events.
•
Think about party favors. This is not just for kids’ birthday parties. Something for guests to take home as a reminder the next day of how you made that special effort for them. Examples are homemade cookies in little bags, a copy of your main dish recipe with a baggie of the herbs you used and so on. Ideas are endless.
•
Put together a play list of appropriate music.
•
The day before the party, estimate how much time is needed for each thing you need to accomplish. This is a good “check up from the neck up” to see if maybe you are overextending yourself. Put the tasks in order and work your plan.
•
Be ready 30 minutes before guests arrive so you can breathe, maybe enjoy a glass of wine with your spouse, and smile thinking that all the work you put into preparation will reap its rewards. When your guests arrive, be present with them. You have earned it!
Decide how many people you can accommodate. Then send out the invitations.
Four to six weeks in advance: Corte Bella gets busy so plan ahead on those invites. Share the theme, type of menu, location, indoors/outdoors, time (consider a spread like 6:00 – 8:00 if you want to limit the visiting), and co-hosts names, if any. Ask guests to let you know if they have food allergies. •
Co-hosting is fun, strengthens relationships and cuts the work as well as expense in half. Just make sure your cohosts get credit on the invitation.
•
Create your menu. Choose things you can make in advance and things that need minimal amount of your time the day/evening of the party. This is not the time to try out a whacky recipe you haven’t tasted yet. Go with tried and true to limit stress.
•
•
Don’t be afraid to adjust your menu if you see a big sale such as the “Buy 1-Get 2 Free” specials at Fry’s.

COMMITTEES
Corte Bella Cuisine, a la Chef Dan Haywood David Wright, Corte Bella Website Administrator Every day is a good day to throw a party in Corte Bella. And who’s not up for a good cocktail party, a backyard BBQ, or a sit-down dinner with friends? Unless we have a stock of heirloom family recipes, we find ourselves running to our cookbooks and food websites for something new and interesting, or old and tried, with which to entice and satisfy the taste buds of our guests. Well, Corte Bella has simplified this process thanks to the Anacapa Restaurant and Corte Bella’s very own Executive Chef Dan Haywood.
Rim, Thailand, Asia, and within the U.S. to New England and New Orleans, and his very own Anacapa Favorites. For the most part, each class (and set of recipes) consisted of at least one appetizer, one entrée, and a dessert.
For the past 5 years Chef Dan, (locally trained in Scottsdale), has presented a series of live cooking demonstrations featuring cuisine from around the world. He has devoted classes to generic subjects such as basic sauces, high teas, hors d’oeuvres, 4-star dinners, and outdoor grilling. And then he has taken residents on an exciting, mouth-watering culinary tour around the world with stops in Italy, France, Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, the Pacific
Regardless of whether you attend a class or not, all these wonderful recipes are available to you. And how much do the recipes cost? They are completely free of charge. (Classes, however, are HOA events which do require an attendance fee. But the price allows you to sample all the wonderful food cooked during the class.) All you need to unlock this treasure trove of delicious, easy-to-follow recipes is a personal electronic device and an Internet (Wi-Fi works just fine) connection. You don’t even need a user account or a password as we’ve made this web page accessible to the general public. All you need to do is logon to cortebella.net and click on the Amenities tab, let your cursor rest on the first sub-menu entry, Anacapa Restaurant, and then click on the Anacapa Recipes sub-menu that pops out. Check it out. Learn to make some fancy dishes. Impress your friends and neighbors with your culinary depth and knowledge. And enjoy the beautiful weather and ambience of the Northwest Valley. We’ll be looking for that party invite in the mail soon.

Discussion Groups on the Corte Bella Website David Wright, Corte Bella Website Administrator Did something just happen that everyone else in the community might want to know about? Is there a really good restaurant that everyone should try? Do you have a problem with your computer or one of your other personal electronic devices? Need a plumber? Or do you have something on your mind that you just have to share? If the answer to any of the above is “yes”, then we have just what the doctor ordered - the Discussion Groups on the Corte Bella website. They are very useful for quickly exchanging information. There are seven categories to help organize the information and to make it easier for users to find answers quickly. • • • • • • •
Can anyone recommend a CB Travel Blog – Have you been to Computer Questions, Answers, Bits, and Bytes Entertainment, Events and Activities General Restaurant Reviews Security in Corte Bella
To make the process easier and more interactive, there are three options available at the bottom of each post, [Reply], [Email Author] and [Edit]. Use the [Reply] option if your response is a general reply to the post that all users might be interested in reading. We ask you to use the [Email Author] option if your reply is personal or if you plan to carry on a prolonged, one-on-one, back-and-forth discussion with the author. The reason behind this request is that many users set up their website profiles to receive emails of certain Discussion Group posts. (The profile settings allow each user to opt in or to opt out of email service for each Discussion Group category.) The [Edit] option allows the author to change or to delete a post. So, please take advantage of the Discussion Groups to share general information or to recommend a service or a trusted service provider or a fabulous dining spot in the valley and remember to keep personal discussions just that – personal. Don’t forget to check the Web Discussion Group Use Policy for guidance if you have any question as to the appropriateness of a possible post. The policy is available online under the Resource Center tab, inside the Governing Documents folder within the Policies folder.
The process works much more effectively and efficiently when everyone takes a moment to choose the correct category before posting a comment.

Standing Up After Saigon Sharon Orlopp When I decided to retire from Walmart as the Global Chief Diversity Officer and SVP of Corporate Human Resources, I thought long and hard about what I wanted to do in the next chapter of my life. I knew that I wanted to write. I had written weekly leadership and inclusion messages at Walmart for over 10 years, so I began attending writing conferences and networking with authors. I submitted several different book proposals to different publishers but didn’t make the progress I wanted to make. Then out of the blue, a mentee of mine called and said that the next time I was in Arkansas I needed to meet with a Vietnamese woman named Thuhang Tran. Life is full of serendipitous moments— and this was one of them! I met Thuhang for coffee, and her personal odyssey mesmerized me. I told her that she needed to write a book about her life story, and she replied that she was looking for the right person to help her write the book. I immediately said, “I’ll do it!” (l-r) Thuhang Tran, Sharon Orlopp
Our book, Standing Up After Saigon, captures the incredible true story of familial love and triumph through adversity. Thuhang was born in 1970 in Saigon, towards the end of the Vietnam War. She contracted polio as a toddler, and though her family sacrificed much to seek treatment, their efforts were halted by the fall of Saigon. Her father, Chinh, was an air traffic controller in the South Vietnam Air Force at the time, and was lost in the evacuations from Saigon, separated from Thuhang and the rest of his family and presumed dead. This powerful memoir follows Thuhang and Chinh through their respective struggles, from Thuhang’s battle with polio and the impact of her father’s absence, to Chinh’s immigration to the United States and his desperate fifteen-year mission to be reunited with his family. Thuhang has remained hopeful and resilient through all the seemingly impossible hurdles she’s faced and lives today to tell her story and inspire those around her to find strength through perseverance. Standing Up After Saigon is available at Walmart.com, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble.

A Wall Comes to Life Donna Norton Ericka, a 9 year old at Thompson Ranch Elementary School, sits at the library computer monitor looking at a wall without color. Upon returning to school on Friday morning, the setting has changed dramatically from white paint to pictures depicting wild life, birds, people of the world, deserts, rocks, reptiles, penguins, and memorable buildings. Dianne & Jim Gannon, Corte Bella Residents, generously donated pictures from their library of photos to improve upon the “look” of the library, which according to the school principal, Dr Saunders, was the “bleakest wall in the place.” Thompson Ranch Elementary, located 5 miles south on El Mirage Road, is home to the Kindergarten thru 8th grade students in the Dysart School District. The school is 67% Hispanic, and 80% of the students are from low-income families. The school is always looking for volunteers to help students struggling with concepts, to help improve the school’s learning environment, to provide enrichment programs, and to donate equipment (such as balls, laptops, nets, books).

CB Vets’ Book Carts… They Still Exist! Jon Wendt, CB Vets Group Remember when you used to curl up on your couch and settled back with a good book to enhance your knowledge or simply enjoy a relaxed evening? Me neither, but the option is available via several sources in our neighborhood. In addition to individual Corte Bella book clubs, you can take advantage of books located in the Golf Club’s Men’s and Women’s powder rooms or borrow the many military oriented historical and current books available via the Corte Bella Vets’ small but growing library.
Most of you are probably familiar with the independent clubs and the Golf Club sources; but did you know that Corte Bella Vet’s own Dan Luparello initially donated a number of excellent books of past military actions and stories. This encouraged several others to enhance our collection with both hard copy and paperback additions. These books are available to all Corte Bella residents. CB Vets’ Club asks only that you borrow and return them during our regular monthly meetings held at the Anacapa on the second Tuesday of each month starting at 8:30 am. You are also equally welcome and encouraged to stay for the meeting which usually includes interesting guest speaker and there is free coffee and pastries! Donations of additional books will also be appreciated.

Fertilize palms (2 of 4 for the year). Fertilize citrus. Check watering schedule for 90º - 100º; water more frequently, NOT LONGER. Plant new palms. Prune shrubs after flowering has finished. Prune crossed and rubbing branches of Palo Verde tree. Pinch back herbs to discourage flowering. Check plants and tree stakes for failure. Treat bilge bug (hook snout beetle) around Agave. Watch trees during summer dormant season; prune water sprouts, suckers, rubbing branches; break, don’t cut base ground suckers e.g. oleander trees. Fertilize roses half strength; check for aphids. Fertilize flower pots every three weeks. Plant chilies, okra, cucumbers, tomatillos, sweet potato. Drape 50% shade cloth over tomatoes and lettuce.
Tips for June • • • • • • • • • • • •
Check watering system; manually turn on one cycle at a time and check drips and emitters. Pull out petunias; plant vinca in new soil. Feed succulents at half strength once a month. Hose off roses to prevent spider mites. Pinch off rose buds when they are the size of a pea; don’t allow buds to grow. Leave lots of foliage on roses to protect canes against sun burn. Fertilize roses half strength. Fertilize citrus in pots. Fertilize palms. Trim purple fountain grass. Trim lantana to keep their shape. Sow seeds: beans, chilies, eggplant, okra, summer squash.

First Service Residential Awards Jodell Dodge the On Site Support Team Member 2017 Barb Morin An earlier issue of the CB Times recognized Jodell Dodge (left) as FSR’s award winner of the On Site Support Team Member for 2017. We all know Jodell and the wonderful job she’s doing for us here in CB but I wanted residents to know more about her and the contributions she’s making that earned her this prestigious award. Jodell was selected as a candidate by one or more of her peers. Qualifications are based on employee accomplishments, performance and achievements. Votes are then cast from all of her First Services onsite peers throughout Arizona. Jodell loves working at First Services and told me how much this award means to her which she proudly displays in her office. Jodell’s our Spa and Fitness Manager. Although that position keeps her busy, her scope of duties and responsibilities reach far beyond that. She’s our technical liasion for Byte Wise, the company that handles all of our IT issues. They are currently insuring the Jonas system used in the Anacapa is P.C.I. compliant. She was instrumental in the installation of a new computer and monitor in the H.O.A. office. This new addition improved the processing of residential cards using a software called Active Net. Jodell oversees the daily sales transactions made at the front desk of the Fitness Center. She manages a total of nineteen people; six part-time employees, eight fitness personnel and five spa people. Jodell was born and raised in Walnut Creek, California. She has two daughters and one son and proudly boasts of a nine month old grandson. Her husband is a General contractor licensed in California and Arizona. She worked as a legal secretary for five years in California, administrative assistant to the Vice President of Sales Operations at Packard Bell in Sacramento and also worked at International Harvestor.
Jodell and her husband moved to Arizona in 2007. Soon after, she attended the National Academy of Sports Medicine in Chandler, Arizona. Upon completion in 2009, she was certified as a Fitness Instructor as well as Personal Trainer. Actually, her desire for body building and fitness started in 2005. Her husband got her interested in working with weights and hired a personal body builder to teach her the proper techniques. Jodell enjoys participating in competitive body building events and has won several awards. Notably, the one she’s most proud of is coming in first place against a twenty year old!

Jerome, An Arizona Day Trip Escape Dave & Linda Wright Central Arizona is dominated by the Prescott National Forest and the Verde Valley. Within a 3 hour drive north of Corte Bella lies Flagstaff, Munds Park, Camp Verde, Clarksdale, Cornville, Oak Creek, Sedona, Cottonwood, and Jerome. All are worth a day trip or a weekend visit. This month, the focus is on the old mining town of Jerome. Getting there can be half the fun. The quick and easy driving route follows I-17 north to AZ-260 which winds NW towards Cottonwood. Just south of Cottonwood, AZ-260 merges into AZ-89A and continues west, passing south of Clarksdale, and eventually winding its way into Jerome where it becomes Main St. The drive from Corte Bella takes a little over 2 hours.
A more adventurous, and scenic, route exits the Corte Bella back gate to SR-303 to US-60 to Wickenburg where it picks up US-93. After a few miles on US-93 you turn NW onto AZ-89, which climbs steadily and steeply through Congress, Yarnell, People’s Valley, to Prescott where you pick up US-89A which winds and curves its way through the Prescott National Forest, until it becomes Clark Street at the southern entrance to Jerome. This route is an hour longer but it’s well worth the effort if you have the time, patience, and the nerve. There are 127 curves on the 12 miles it takes to arrive in Jerome! Jerome is an old mining town, precipitously perched atop Cleopatra Hill (5,200 ft.) on Mingus Mt. (7,734 ft), offering spectacular views of the Verde Valley. The streets are narrow and few and the terrain is quite hilly with multiple stairways connecting the lower streets to the more elevated ones. The town dried up in the 1950s when the price of copper dipped to 53 cents/lb. It saw a rebirth in the late 1960s as a popular locale for the young and artsy crowd. Today, it maintains that flavor with many small shops offering an assortment of arts and crafts from an equally interesting assortment of artists and craftspeople. The town also prides itself on its tradition of being a ghost town, with several ghost tours available, daily.
Surprisingly, Jerome is also home to no less than six wineries. One of our favorites, Caduceus Cellars, in the middle of Main St. It serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and offers wine tasting and a full-service bar. The wines are created from grapes grown in nearby valleys as well as from vineyards in New Mexico. Next door to Caduceus Cellars is Nelly Bly II, an amazing shop offering an assortment of kaleidoscopes from as little as $1.50 to well over $10,000. It also offers a wide assortment of other, interesting pieces for all types of homes. You can easily spend an hour or so marveling at the unique merchandise on every shelf. There are only two hotels in Jerome proper. The Connor Hotel, on Main St., is easily accessible and has a nice dining room with a full-service bar. The second hotel is the Jerome Grand Hotel, at the end of Hill Street, which was originally constructed in 1926 as the United Verde Hospital, owned by the United Verde Cooper Company. While it was a state-of-the-art medical facility, it closed down in 1950 as mining operations began shutting down. The building then stood unused for 44 years until 1994 and then opening as a hotel in 1996. The building’s construction is interesting as it is fireproof (not one piece of wood in in the framework) and is also earthquake proof, as it needed to be to withstand the blasts of dynamite from the nearby mining operations. The Asylum Restaurant in the Jerome Grand Hotel is described in the hotel’s brochure as “a one of a kind restaurant... having a reputation for providing the atmosphere, service, food and wines that attract Senators, Governors, Rock Stars, along with valley residents and tourists looking for a wonderful time without the attitude.” There are many other smaller, less expensive eateries sprinkled throughout the city. If you decide to stay overnight you can easily take in the sites of Clarkdale, Cottonwood, Cornville, or Sedona the next day before heading back home. Regardless of the length of stay, Jerome is an easily reachable destination that should be on every Arizonian’s bucket list.

It’s Your Health and Your Future – Prediabetes, Sun Health and You Laurel Gedan Diabetes is a tough disease. The effects on your body are devastating, and trying to manage the disease is complicated and difficult. As we age, more of us are getting the diagnosis of “prediabetes.” We don’t actually have diabetes, but we’re pretty close to it. And if we don’t take immediate steps to change our lifestyle – chances are good that we will ultimately cross over from the “pre” diabetes diagnosis to the “actual” diabetes diagnosis. Unfortunately, today’s doctors are so busy that they barely have time to do much more than tell you that your lab results show you have prediabetes. Maybe they’ll add “Watch your carbs”. And you’re out the door.
If you’re like me, you immediately go online and find almost too much information. It seems like every single food has carbs. Strawberries. Skim milk. Even apples. Are we limited to having only water and lettuce? Are we supposed to stop eating altogether? Here’s the good news for those of us living in the West Valley: the Sun Health Center for Health & Wellbeing offers in-depth education and personalized support from certified diabetes educators and registered dieticians and the classes are offered in Surprise. There are classes for those who have prediabetes as well as those who have diabetes itself. These classes are innovative, informative, and motivating. You will learn a tremendous amount about the disease, about steps to take to

help prevent the disease and (if you have already been diagnosed with diabetes) about dealing with the disease. But most importantly, for the first time ever, as of April 1st, Medicare will now pay for CDC-approved prevention program classes. And the Center for Health & Wellbeing is the first organization in the state of Arizona to receive preliminary CDC-recognition status. This means, for the first time, if you have been diagnosed with prediabetes, you can participate in this terrific program and it will be covered by Medicare. This is a huge shift in Medicare coverage. Previously, Medicare only paid for treatment of an illness. But they now realize that helping to keep people from getting diabetes in the first place will save everyone money and problems. The classes don’t just focus on nutrition. You’ll learn how diabetes affects your body and the many things (besides watching what you eat) that you can do to help prevent it. Sun Health’s series of classes start at the Center for Health & Wellbeing on May 10, 2018. Even if you read this article after May 10th, if you have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes and are interested in participating, call the Sun Health Center right away to see how you can get enrolled. The phone number is (623) 832-9355. Those of us who live here are so fortunate to have access to this superb program. If you have been diagnosed with prediabetes, you are doing yourself a disservice if you don’t take advantage of what is uniquely available to us through Sun Health. Laurel Gedan is a Board Member of the Sun Health Foundation and a Corte Bella resident. For more information on this and other Sun Health programs, call her at (623) 455-9067.

What’s Happening in Corte Bella Linda Wright
Dr. John DenBoer Lecture on Dementia March 22
An interesting and thought provoking talk by this Scottsdale based neuropsychologist provided information on his ground breaking programs which deal with dementia mitigation and intervention. His Smart Memory training programs are setup to impact the early onset of dementia and memory loss. A large group of Corte Bella residents enjoyed his presentation.
Paperback Writer Beatles Tribute Concert March 25
There was dancing in the aisles and much clapping of hands as well as singing along to the fabulous music of our youth. A sell out crowd filled the Santa Barbara room and enjoyed almost 2 full hours of non-stop live music and fabulous vocals. Every song performed by this talented group recreated the magic of the Beatles. It was amazing in every respect. TAD Management productions deliver every time.
Jason Love Comedy Show March 30
Once again, this comedy show had every one laughing and chuckling for the entire show. All three comedians were enjoyed by a full house of Corte Bella residents who enjoyed all the good, clean and entertaining comedy routines. Comments on this particular show said this show “was the best one yet.” Keep it coming Jason Love. Corte Bella loves your shows!
Preparing for the Easter Egg Hunt March 31
A large group of dedicated volunteers (more than 20) gathered to “stuff” plastic Easter eggs and prepare Easter baskets and gifts for the annual children’s Easter Egg Hunt on Easter Sunday. More than 2,000 eggs were filled with jelly beans and other such delights – and they were all taped closed too. Eggs were counted and separated into the age group categories. How wonderful it was to see time donated to make sure the kids would have a wonderful time the next morning. Thank you Corte Bella – you never fail to show up when needed.

Blood Donation Drive
Cooking with Chef Dan – French Basics
Corte Bella residents are generous in every way and they proved it once again as they signed up to give blood to the United Blood Services collection event here in Corte Bella. The UBS stated all appointments were filled and they were beyond thrilled with the turnout and the units collected during their “Find the Hero in You” effort here in our community. Way to go, Corte Bella!
Chef Dan delivered once again in his monthly cooking classes. A sold out class was thrilled with his presentation of chilled poached salmon, duck confit with heirloom tomatoes and fresh pasta, and honey poached pears with mascarpone topping. The techniques Chef demonstrated left everyone impressed and after eating each dish, the class participants were absolutely delighted. There is no better way to spend the first Friday of the month than at a Cooking with Chef Dan class (October through May of each year.)

April 6
Annual Children’s Easter Egg Hunt April 1
On Easter morning, there were 130 children from ages 0 to nine years old gathered with their parents and grandparents to participate in the Corte Bella Annual Easter Egg Hunt. The children happily gathered up the Easter Eggs that had been placed and hidden by wonderful volunteers. Every child was able to select a special gift from the table that overflowed with wonderful “prizes” for every participant. It was a magical and enjoyable event with beautiful children dressed in their special Easter outfits. Just a perfect example of Corte Bella’s community at its best.
Anacapa Easter Sunday Brunch April 1
At the end of this special Anacapa event, the tally of persons served reached 500. This annual brunch event was amazing in every way and delicious. From the fresh seafood display sitting under the carved ice Easter Bunny statue to the carving station offering amazing roasted meats to the made to order omelets and the fresh salads, this was something not to be missed. Chef Dan and his kitchen crew outdid themselves. The service provided by Food and Beverage Manager Jill Machay and her crew of servers, busers, and bartenders were absolutely perfect. Thank you Anacapa and all your staff. It was memorable.
Volunteer Recognition Night April 9
Each year in April (National Volunteer Recognition Night), Corte Bella HOA hosts a Volunteer Recognition Night for the Corte Bella residents who volunteer within the HOA. These volunteers range from Board of Directors to committee members, to the website and magazine team members, and to events volunteers. The Santa Barbara room was filled with those volunteers and a wonderful buffet meal was enjoyed by all. The theme of “Helping Hands” was artfully carried out with colorful balloons and “hands” cleverly placed on the colorful tables. A program featured HOA General Manager Michael Arrington and Board of Directors’ President Michael McVeigh, who both thanked the volunteers for their donated time and their dedication to this community. Corte Bella is full of folks who will step up and get the job done. We are so lucky to have each of them living here.
Chase Field Diamondbacks vs the Los Angeles Dodgers April 4
A wonderful time was had by a happy group of Corte Bella residents who traveled in comfort to Chase Field and were able to watch the Arizona Diamondbacks defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers. The seats were great for watching the game and everyone enjoyed using their “D’bucks” to purchase food from the snack vendors and items in the team store.
