ASSOCIATION

From the General Manager’s Desk Recently I have received several reports of some residents failing to keep their pets on a leash and under their control, to the point that other residents were threatened and/or injured by the pet. The pet is not at fault here and does not know any better. In fact, sometimes the pet is just Mike Arrington, General Manager trying to be friendly. Each of these reported incidents originated in the Lanai area in front of the sport courts entry. That area is posted with a double sided sign stating that “pets must be on a leash.” The sign cannot be overlooked. Failing to control a pet anywhere on association property is a violation of the agreement and rules that each lot owner agreed to when signing on the dotted line to purchase a lot in Corte Bella. Additionally, it is a violation of State Law and punishable by fines and/or impoundment of the animal. By the way, a dog dragging a leash around does not comply with the spirit of the law or rules in any way. The Board of Directors have a fiduciary responsibility to enforce the association’s use restrictions and have delegated that duty to First Service Residential, Inc. by written contract. As managing agent of First Service Residential, Inc. on site here at Corte Bella, I am charged with making a reasonable and responsible effort to enforce these rules and laws to the best of my ability. Since failure to do so may contribute to injury of Corte Bella residents

Arizona Revised Statutes 11-1020. Dogs; liability Injury to any person or damage to any property by a dog while at large shall be the full responsibility of the dog owner or person or persons responsible for the dog when such damages were inflicted. 11-1025. Liability for dog bites A. The owner of a dog which bites a person when the person is in or on a public place or lawfully in or on a private place, including the property of the owner of the dog, is liable for damages suffered by the person bitten, regardless of the former viciousness of the dog or the owner’s knowledge of its viciousness. D. No person in charge of any dog shall permit such dog in a public park or upon any public school property unless the dog is physically restrained by a leash, enclosed in a car, cage or similar enclosure or being exhibited or trained at a recognized kennel club event, public school or park sponsored event. Restated Declaration of Corte Bella Country Club Association Anyone purchasing a lot in Corte Bella Country Club Association legally agreed to these declarations in writing upon purchase of the lot.

and I have seen serious dog related injuries to people over the years, this matter is especially important to me. Enforcement is also very important in the association avoiding potential liability in law suits. Obviously, I cannot be everywhere at once. However, it is required that I address every “leash law” violation that I witness or am made aware of. Typically, a first time offender is simply reminded of the rule/law and nicely asked to secure the animal on a leash. Failure to comply beyond that may lead to written, policy based sanctions against the owner of the pet. It could even lead to a visit from the State Animal Control Officer if ignored. Although I enjoy and appreciate serving the residents of Corte Bella, I take no pleasure in this part of my job and I call it one of my “dirty duties”. That does not change the fact that I am under contract to execute that duty on behalf of Corte Bella Country Club Association. The fact is, pets are currently allowed and welcomed in most all of the association’s common areas as long as they are on a leash and under the owners control. No pets are allowed to run free off the leash in Corte Bella at any time. Please respect the rights and safety of all Corte Bella owners by complying with the rules and laws that were in place when you purchased your home in Corte Bella. By the way, the vast majority of Corte Bella dog owners do comply with the leash law and many have told me often that they agree with the rules and the leash law. I have attached the specific language of the State Law and community rules as an FYI for anyone interested. They are very clear as to what is allowed or not allowed. Please keep your dog on a leash and under your control when outside of the confines of your fenced lot area. Thank you..

12.4 (d) The Association may adopt reasonable rules, designed to minimize damage and disturbance to other owners and occupants, including rules requiring damage deposits, waste removal, leash controls, noise controls, pet occupancy limits based on size and facilities of the Lot and fair share use of the Common Area; provided, however, any rule prohibiting the keeping of ordinary household pets shall apply prospectively only and shall not require the removal of any pet which was being kept on the Properties in compliance with the rules in effect prior to the adoption of such rule. Nothing in this provision shall prevent the Association from requiring removal of any animal that presents an actual threat to the health or safety of residents or from requiring abatement of any nuisance or unreasonable source of annoyance. No owner shall be permitted to raise, breed or keep animals or poultry of any kind for commercial or business reasons. Restated Declaration - Use Restrictions (4) (b): “Pets shall be confined to the lot or kept on a leash at all times.” (4) (e): Pets which are permitted to roam free, make objectionable noises or excessive noise, leave waste on the properties, endanger the health or safety of occupants of other dwelling units, or constitute a nuisance or inconvenience to occupants of other dwelling units shall be removed upon request of the board. If the pet owner fails to honor the request, the board may remove the pet.

Board Talk CB Times October 2018 This month’s CB Times takes us into the fall. As I reviewed the upcoming HOA events in the last CB Times, there are thirty-five HOA events planned through the end of the year. Additional meetings and charity events are also on the schedule and I’m sure many other private events are taking place. I think the true meaning of “Active Adult” community is alive and well here in Corte Bella. Michael McVeigh, CBCCA HOA Board President

The days are not as hot now and we’ll have about seven more beautiful months before the weather changes again. I’m already seeing some familiar faces return and before we know it, we’ll be discussing the Christmas lights on San Ramon. I want to start by saying a big thank you to Linda Wright for the fantastic job she is doing on the CB Times. I noticed she is getting articles from several committees each month to publish so residents can see what these volunteers are doing for the community. Thanks to the Building & Grounds Committee, Long Term Planning Committee and Technology Committees for the updates last month. Thanks also for meeting throughout the summer and keeping the focus on your goals. I’m also hoping that you will continue to attend these open committee meetings even though we are sharing our progress each month.

Our next major event will be the annual budget presentation to the community on Wednesday, October 3rd at 6:00 pm. I hope everyone can plan to attend.

said they wanted to see more of was the financials. Residents wanted to see accurate financial information more frequently in the CB Times. We listened and the format has been simplified by the Finance Committee Chairman. Of course, the complete financials are always posted on our web after being presented to the community and approved by the board. Some members of our Anacapa staff have returned to school and we have a few new faces. Please say hello to them the next time you are in the restaurant. In addition to the budget presentation mentioned above, our next scheduled meeting will be the Board workshop on Friday, October 19 at 9:00 am. Our next scheduled Board of Directors meeting will be on Wednesday, October 24 at 10:00 am. All residents are welcome and encouraged to attend. Your thoughts, opinions, and concerns are very important to me as your Board President. Contact me, anytime, at mmcveigh3@cox.net or 623-433-9921.

Our next major event will be the annual budget presentation to the community on Wednesday, October 3rd at 6:00 pm. I hope everyone can plan to attend. The Finance Committee will make the 2019 Budget presentation to the Board and we are all looking forward to hearing what they have to say. Last year at this time we were just beginning to see the first monthly EPCOR wastewater reduction of $8.09 for an annual savings of $97.08 for each homeowner. It started on July 1st. The second phase of this reduction took effect this past July 1st with another monthly reduction of $6.02. This amounts to $169.32 annually per homeowner or about $279,000 per year for all of Corte Bella. Big thanks to Diane Smith and her Government Affairs Committee for this meaningful work. We have three more scheduled reductions before we reach our consolidated rate. At full consolidation, Corte Bella residents will send about $650,000 per year less to EPCOR than we did in 2016. We are moving along with our project of updating the Governing documents and the proposed changes were introduced at the September Board meeting. Most of the changes that were board approved will be shared with the community for a majority vote shortly. Other changes that can be made unilaterally by the Board will be presented before the end of the year. Last year at the annual meeting, one of the things that attendees

CULINARY German Delights A recipe from Chef Dan

Executive Chef Dan Haywood, Anacapa Restaurant

Mustard Spaetzle Recipe • • • • • • • • •

1 cup all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon ground pepper 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 2 large eggs 1/4 cup milk 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 tablespoons minced fresh chives 2 Tbsp. Whole Grain Mustard

Beef Sauerbraten Recipe • • • • • •

Directions: In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. In another bowl, whisk eggs and milk together. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in egg-milk mixture. Gradually draw in the flour from the sides and combine well; the dough should be smooth and thick. Let the dough rest for 10 to 15 minutes. Bring 3 quarts of salted water to a boil in a large pot, then reduce to a simmer. To form the spaetzle, hold a large holed colander or slotted spoon over the simmering water and push the dough through the holes with a spatula or spoon. Do this in batches; don’t overcrowd the pot. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes or until the spaetzle floats to the surface, stirring gently to prevent sticking. Dump the spaetzle into a colander and give it a quick rinse with cool water. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat and add the spaetzle; tossing to coat. Add the mustard; cook the spaetzle for 1 to 2 minutes to give the noodles some color, and then sprinkle with chopped chives. Season with salt and pepper before serving.

• • • • • • • • •

Directions:

2 cups water 1 cup cider vinegar 1 cup red wine vinegar 1 medium onion, chopped 1 large carrot, chopped 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon kosher salt, additional for seasoning meat 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 2 bay leaves 6 whole cloves 12 juniper berries 1 teaspoon mustard seeds 1 (3 1/2 to 4-pound) bottom round 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1/3 cup sugar 18 dark old-fashioned gingersnaps (about 5 ounces), crushed 1/2 cup seedless raisins, optional

In a large saucepan over high heat, combine water, cider vinegar, red wine vinegar, onion, carrot, salt, pepper, bay leaves, cloves, juniper, and mustard seeds. Cover and bring this to a boil; then lower the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Set aside to cool. Pat the bottom round dry and rub with vegetable oil and salt on all sides. Heat a large sauté pan over high heat; add meat and brown on all sides, approximately 2 to 3 minutes per side. When the marinade has cooled to a point where you can stick your finger in it and not be burned, place the meat in a non-reactive vessel and pour over the marinade. Place into the refrigerator for 3 days. If the meat is not completely submerged in the liquid, turn it over once a day. After 3 days of marinating, preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Add the sugar to the meat and marinade, cover and place on the middle rack of the oven. Cook until tender, approximately 4 hours. Remove the meat from the vessel and keep warm. Strain the liquid to remove the solids. Return the liquid to the pan and place over medium-high heat. Whisk in the gingersnaps and cook until thickened, stirring occasionally. Strain the sauce through a fine mesh sieve to remove any lumps. Add the raisins if desired. Slice the meat and serve with the sauce.

CULINARY

Wine & Food: Uncorked Deborah Lazear 2nd in series Many Corte Bella wine lovers travel to places famous for their wines and they bring some home. Much of this wine is not readily available in our local stores, so it is a real treat when a friend shares a special bottle. The food should showcase the wine, and a bridge between the two is just the trick. Here are a few tips to make this happen. If the wine is spicy, such as Zinfandel, Shiraz, or Gewürztraminer, the food will benefit from some finishing sea salt dusted on just before serving. Alternatively, add a bridging spice such as cinnamon, cayenne, or cumin to the dish. If the wine is tannic, (e.g.Cabernet Sauvignon) add crème frâiche, butter, or olive oil to the finished sauce. I have fun with truffle oil. If the wine is acidic (Pinot Grigio, Barolo), substitute feta for Parmesan. An aged balsamic vinegar (18 years old) drizzled over the dish will also calm the acid. If the wine is herbaceous (Sauvignon Blanc), add parsley or basil with a little butter to finish. If the wine is high in alcohol (16-17%), roast some onions and puree them to make a sauce.

Wine of the Month: Chardonnay

SOul’s 3rd Annual CHILI COOK OFF MONDAY, November 5th 5:00 PM – 8:30 PM Anacapa, Corte Bella Santa Barbara Room and Patio

First, identify if the wine has been aged in oak or aged in stainless steel (unoaked.) Some Chardonnay will have a little of both!

Unoaked Chardonnay, such as Chablis and Burgundy, pairs beautifully with oysters in the half shell, Humboldt Fog or Cheddar cheese, and Brussels sprouts.

Oaked Chardonnay prefers sheep’s milk cheeses, coconut sauces and banana bread!

If the wine is fruit-forward (aka sweet), like Riesling Spätlese, add some chili to the dish. Replace broccoli or asparagus with spinach.

It’s back. It’s bigger and better than last year!

Chili tasting from our Corte Bella neighbors’ best recipes! Help to choose the BEST CORTE BELLA CHILI!!

If the wine is oaky (Chardonnay, aged in oak), blend in a few vanilla beans into the sauce.

Dinner to follow with Homemade Chili, coleslaw and corn bread. Cash bar (Happy Hour prices) and music. Tickets $20.00 Per Person Seating is limited so get your tickets ASAP. Tickets will be available for sale outside the Anacapa on Tuesdays/Thursdays during Happy Hour, 2:30 to 4:30. Watch for future blast emails for additional ticket sale information or call Sandy Connelly 623-455-3841. Proceeds from the cookoff go to support local charities. Thank you for your support!

Frequently Asked Questions Q. Why do you match the wine to the most prominent element in the dish, not the category such as chicken, beef, etc.? A. Consider the seasoning, cooking method, or sauce. Those may be the more pronounced flavors, not the chicken or fish underneath it. Veal cutlets simply cooked in a sauté pan with a squeeze of lemon would welcome a white wine with a little acidity such as Pinot Grigio. But turn that veal into Veal Marsala with mushrooms, and the rich Marsala wine in the sauce cries out for a soft, supple red like Barbara or Merlot.

COMMITTEES

An Update from Your Corte Bella ARC The Architectural Review Committee (ARC), comprised of resident volunteers, reviews all landscaping and architectural submittals from homeowners to make external changes to their property - including the front yard, courtyard, and backyard. Requests for changes are reviewed in the spirit of maintaining a landscape palette that reflects the thematic character of a “Santa Barbaralike” community in the Arizona desert. The ARC looks to ensure compliance with our Corte Bella design guidelines, which were established by the Homeowners Association (HOA) to maintain

certain standards by which the community may grow and develop. Our community is now approaching 15 years old. Changes are needed to help maintain and increase our property values. The ARC is currently working on revisions to the Corte Bella Design Guidelines. The ARC will work to gain HOA approval on these changes, which will help to clarify a few ambiguous areas and bring the guidelines up to relevancy. Suggestions from homeowners may be submitted to the HOA administration office and will be considered during the revision process.

Administration net expenses are favorarable $18,737 due to unused contingency expense budget of $17,000. Facilities net expense is favorable by $22,190 with differences spread out in several line items. A continuing unfavorable budget item is the gate repairs expense under the Guardhouse department by $11,414. This is attributed primarily to older assets and continued minor, but multiple, hit and runs. Landscaping expense is favorable by $22,404 related to lower costs YTD in tree pruning and plant replacements. This is probably due more to timing in budgeting versus timing in completing the tasks. The Restaurant continues to exceed income budgets YTD $36,638 due to a great job being

33 done by our Management team Favorable to Budget and staff. Tremendous effort by Unfavorable to Budget the staff. Restaurant expenses continue unfavorable $82,246. This expense relates to budgeting errors in payroll attributed to the State Mandated Minimum Wage increases of $2.50 combined in 2017 and 2018. Overall, “The State of the Finances in Corte Bella HOA remains Excellent.” We can be proud of our development and should give KUDO’S to a job well done by our General Manager, Department Managers, and entire staff and volunteers.

Venting Is Good - Especially If You Are a Dryer! Steve DeBoer, Neighborhood Awareness and Safety Committee Chairperson One item commonly overlooked when it comes to home maintenance/fire prevention is our dryer’s vent. The National Fire Protection Association www.nfpa.org website provided the following statistics regarding dryer fires: In 2010-2014, U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated average of 15,970 home structure fires involving clothes dryers or washing machines each year. These fires caused annual averages of 13 civilian deaths, 444 civilian injuries, and $238 million in direct property damage. The vast majority of fires (92%) involved clothes dryers. The leading items first ignited in dryer fires were dust, fiber or lint (26% of total) and clothing (26%).

wise to leave it to them, while companies which manufacture/sell the do-it-yourself kits indicate an individual can achieve professional results by following the “simple instructions”. As an experiment, I bought a cleaning kit to see how much lint I could remove. While I have regularly cleaned the flexible hose attached to the dryer and about the first foot of the sheet metal duct in the wall it was the first time since we bought the house (in 2006) that the other approximately 11 feet of the vent had been cleaned. Pictured is the amount of lint I collected during the cleaning process. Keep in mind that individual results will vary and you may have more or in some cases less lint

accumulated due to dryer usage and the type of items being dried. Either way, whether you have a professional come and clean the vent or you are a competent do-it-yourselfer, it is money and time well spent to mitigate the risk of a dryer fire.

While the percentage of residential fires caused by dryers is a relatively small percentage of the total number of residential fires (about 5%) the risk should not be ignored. For some homes in Corte Bella, checking and cleaning the dryer vent is relatively quick and easy as the dryers vent through the exterior wall behind the unit. However, if you have a floorplan like ours, the dryer vent runs up through the wall to a roof vent making for a very long run with a significant amount of surface area for dryer lint to accumulate and a challenge to properly clean. How and how often should a dryer vent be cleaned? How often will depend on the amount of use and the type of articles being dried; most on-line sources recommend the vent be cleaned at least once per year. How the vent should be cleaned, or rather who should clean it is an open question. Professionals state that home do-it-yourself cleaning kits (if not used properly) can actually exacerbate the problem by blocking the vent, and that home owners would be

Smiling Out Loud Donates Shoes to Thompson Ranch Elementary School Linda Wright, SOuL member

Soles for SOuL Corte Bella’s ladies charity support group recently donated 128 pairs of children’s shoes (sport shoes and tennis shoes) to the Thompson Ranch Elementary School, Dysart School District. The school principal Dr. Rachel Saunders and the Vice Principal Donald “Casey” Kuhn received the donation presented by SOuL Vice President Kay Steik on August 21, 2018. Kay was accompanied by Carol Courter, Sandy Harris and Linda Wright, all members of SOuL. The shoes are in the school’s hospitality closet and will be distributed to children identified on a case by case basis. The shoes were donated by the members of SOuL and also by other community residents who heard about the shoes being collected and decided to help. Thank you to those from Corte Bella Tai Chi, the Mah Jongg group, and the Ya Ya Sisterhood card group as well as others from the community who were so generous as to participate in collecting the shoes. The school indicated that their supply of shoes had been greatly depleted, especially in the smaller sizes. This donation will fill a critical need. SOuL plans to help Thompson Ranch with other projects through the school year. This school is located just down

El Mirage Road from us and SOuL is happy to help those in need that are close in proximity to Corte Bella. If you are interested in joining our charity support group, please send an email to soul4u@yahoo.com or come to the monthly meetings in the Bella Stanza Room of the social hall on the third Thursdays of each month at 10:30 AM. You are most welcome to check us out and learn more about our group and our activities.

Drop Toppers Travel to Flagstaff Nancy Wendler On August 27, Drop Toppers took their annual trek to Flagstaff for the day. First stop was the Riordan Mansion where we enjoyed a one hour docent guided tour of the fully furnished homes. This “duplex” of 13,000 feet was built in 1904 by the Riordan brothers who were lumber barons and who contributed much to the development of Flagstaff early in the 20th century. The architect, Charles Whittlesey, was also the architect of El Tovar lodge at the Grand Canyon and the buildings share a design of log planks and native stone. Following our tour, the group lunched at Fat Olives....outside on the patio loving the cool mid 70’s weather. Membership in Drop Toppers is free... all you need is a convertible and desire to see the sights of Arizona. Contact Nancy Wendler at njwendler@msn.com for further information.

Northwest Valley Connect Robin Mandell Ever find yourself in need of a ride? Have to get to a doctor’s appointment or the grocery and for whatever reason you don’t have wheels? This is an issue for some of the 100,000+ folks over the age of 65 that live in the Northwest Valley of Phoenix. What to do? There is no mass transit in our area. Cabs are limited. A few years ago, the Sun Health Foundation and Benevilla set up a new organization to address the issue of transportation for seniors in our area: Northwest Valley Connect (NVC), a nonprofit transportation coordination service for residents of the west region of the Phoenix metropolitan area. NVC aims to educate the population it serves on existing transportation resources as well as provide new senior transportation options to service unmet needs. NVC is not only meeting a demand, but it is an essential ingredient to ensure citizens of the west valley are able to maintain a vibrant and independent lifestyle well into their later years. Calls to the Mobility Center at NVC have increased dramatically! The year of the organization’s inception, 2014, there were 288 inquiries. In 2015 - 1,457; 2016 - 3,654 and in 2017 - 10,645, 2018 - on track to be more than 14,000 calls.

What a great way to help your neighbors who can’t drive anymore to get to their doctors appointments, dialysis, cancer treatments, shopping, and more. Come work with a fun, big hearted group at NVC! Drive your own vehicle, or one of ours. By volunteering to drive, you give the gift of mobility to an older adult or person with a disability. You will provide door-to-door transportation with flexible hours on a schedule that works for you. •

AARP Smart Driver Course at Corte Bella - October 30th Robin Mandell When was the last time you took a driver’s refresher course? If you can’t recall, it’s probably time! Driving is definitely not what it used to be; with the ever-changing road conditions, traffic laws and car technology, it might seem a bit challenging. This is why it’s important to keep your driving skills up to date in order to be safe on the road. We invite you to take advantage of the Smart Driver course to brush-up on your driving skills. By taking a driver safety course, you’ll learn the current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques, and how to operate your vehicle more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. You’ll learn: • • •

How to maintain a proper following distance The safest way to change lanes and make turns at intersections The effects of medications on driving

Reducing driver distractions such as eating, smoking, and cell phone use Proper use of safety belts, air bags, antilock brakes, and new technology found in cars today

After completing the course, you will have a greater appreciation of driving challenges and a better understanding of how to avoid potential collisions and injuring yourself or others. You may be eligible to receive an insurance discount, valid for 3 years, upon completing the course. Consult your insurance agent for details. Walk-About-Night - Christmas 2018 San Ramon Stringers

The annual Corte Bella “Walk-AboutNight” will be held on Friday, December 7th on San Ramon Drive and surrounding streets. Corte Bella residents and their guests are invited to attend this annual Christmas event. This marks the 8th year of this Christmas celebration. In 2006, when our homes were first built, a few residents of San Ramon Drive began decorating their homes. After a few years, more and more residents joined in until 2011, when it was decided to designate “Walk-AboutNight” and bring the Salvation Army Red Kettle to our street. The first year just over $1300.00 was donated in the Red Kettle! The residents were surprised – and the Salvation Army was over-joyed! Each year thereafter, more residents decorated, and more people attended. Last year, the Red Kettle donations totaled $11,832.00! Along the way, the Corte Bella Chorus joined us. Their seasonal music makes this event more festive and better known locally. They raise the Christmas spirit of all who attend. Even Santa and his helpers join-in to make this event more festive by riding along the street in a decorated “sleigh”. Local residents “man” the Red Kettle and encourage all to share in the giving. The individual efforts begin in early November with a pre-decoration gathering at one of the neighborhood homes. Plans are made and a scheduled is prepared. Once the residents have finished with their own homes, a couple days are set aside to assist anyone needing help. Usually ten to fifteen volunteers show up to assist with any tasks needed to make the neighborhood complete. Each year, it is a group effort to erect the neighborhood Nativity scene purchased jointly by the neighbors and displayed prominently near the entrance. Most of the houses are connected with red rope lights that run down both sides of the street with a snowflake on top of their mailboxes. As the years passed, people moved out and new people moved in. We have been very lucky with the support shown from the new neighbors. Everyone has been eager

to get involved with the decorating and the fund raising. Last year we raised nearly $12,000.00! This year we are hoping to break that level! If we can, this will make the Corte Bella Red Kettle one of the largest yielding Red Kettle donations in the state. The Red Kettle represented the “reason for the season” and our donations are used locally. This is a great time of the year to make a donation that benefits those in our area who are less fortunate than

we are, who live in Corte Bella. As many of our residents often say, we all enjoy putting up the lights and decorations, but it really makes us feel good when the community supports the Salvation Army in this manner. Some of our residents measure the level of appreciation by the total amount of the donations in the Red Kettle and we hope this year is better than last.

An experienced ally can truly make all the difference. We’ve been helping seniors and their families for over 30 years. And we’d like to help you, too. Corte Bella Adventure Group Steve Downing With temperatures soaring in the valley, the Corte Bella Adventure Group headed north to Flagstaff. Our hike began with a descent into Sandy Canyon which connects to the southern end of Walnut Canyon. After the descent into the canyon, the trail leveled off making this a fairly easy eight mile roundtrip hike. Part of our trail followed Passage Thirty-One of the Arizona Trail.

“How I Spent My Summer Vacation” Joel Piaskowski, Corte Bella Tennis Club (CBTC) Many Corte Bella residents escape to cooler climates during summer and Corte Bella Tennis Club (CBTC) members are no exception. Rick and Femmie Gratian enjoyed their second home in California near Yosemite, despite smoky days from the Ferguson Fire. They also went to Carolina Beach, North Carolina to visit their son, daughter-inlaw, and two grandchildren. (left) Paul, Nancy, son Jason, daughter-in-law Helena, and new grandson, Colton. Paul and Nancy Byrne returned to their home in Canada on Vancouver Island. The beautiful Canadian sunset photo of Tofino, Canada’s most westerly community and home to the best surfing beaches, was taken from the deck of their house.

Rick and Peg Ryer enjoyed summer in East Hampstead, New Hampshire. Rick played tennis twice weekly with old friends. At eighty two, Rick still enjoys the game. After tennis, Rick cruised around their pond in his canoe. Quoting Rick, “It’s nice to have the benefit of two beautiful but different climates.” Mary Lee Planer spent time in Portland, Oregon and nearly a month in China with a teacher (who speaks no English.) Last summer, Mary Lee hosted this teacher, a chaperon with a student exchange group to Portland. “It was a fabulous trip. China is amazing, with such a long history,” says Mary Lee. The photo of Mary Lee, in traditional clothing, was taken at Huaangguoshu waterfalls in Guanling, Guizhou Province. Mary Lee Planner in Guanling, China.

Donna Norton and husband Greg spent time in Logan, Utah, in the Cache Valley, eighty five miles northeast of Salt Lake City. They stayed at Utah State University, lodged in student housing, took advantage of the campus tennis courses and Sports Academy weekly clinics.

Corte Bella Golf Club News Debbie Parks-Dube October is the month that the club will again be over-seeding the golf course so that the course will be green all winter long. The base grass on the golf course is Bermuda, which is the same grass that is present on golf courses all around the valley. In September, the Bermuda grass growth starts to slow down depending on how warm it still is in September. We will help the process of the Bermuda going dormant towards the end of the month by scalping the grass down. It will appear dead, however it’s not. It’s just dormant and will be ready to grow and become green again when the warm temperatures come back. Once the Bermuda grass is scalped down, the rye grass seed will go down on the tee boxes, fairways, greens and green surrounds. Once

that seed is dropped, it takes about a week to ten days to see green grass pop out of the seed. If you are new to Arizona and not yet used to seeing the overseeding process, you will see it done on golf courses and HOA’s common green areas throughout the state. It’s messy but it’s worth it to see the lush, deep green grass during the winter months. This year we will be over-seeding the golf course beginning October 8th through October 25th. The course will reopen on Friday, October 26th. The club’s Grill will be closed but will be open for breakfast and lunch on the weekends. I sure am looking forward to some cooler temperatures and seeing all of our residents and golf members that have been gone for the summer return!
