ASSOCIATION
Recognizing Those Who Serve Ladies and Gentlemen: You may have heard me say before that I believe yours is the last generation of great volunteers. I am not sure if that is right but it certainly feels like it to me sometimes. More often than not, Corte Bella feels like a different planet to me Mike Arrington, HOA General Manager when I come through the gates from life outside. Values and priorities are different, it seems. If I am right, then what a shame. If I am wrong, then thank all that is good. I cannot imagine where the world may be headed without volunteers and people giving of themselves when no one is asking. That all said, Corte Bella is alive and well with volunteers making the community much more than it would be without them. Our residents are both generous and capable folks and that is what makes a great volunteer. You don’t have to be a subject matter expert but rather only someone interested and willing to serve something other than yourself on occasion. Corte Bella is chock full of willing and able volunteers at all degrees of dedication. Some work like they did prior to retirement and others help out when they can. All levels of commitment are

welcome and appreciated. I have also said before that volunteers are what make Corte Bella great rather than good. The community is what it is and is obviously many wonderful things. However, you might think of it like a car in that the car may be beautiful in appearance but how big is the engine and how many horsepower are under the hood. Corte Bella is obviously beautiful and it has a huge and powerful engine and a lot of horsepower because of the effort and willingness of its volunteers. April is national Volunteer Recognition Month and I want to take the time to acknowledge and thank everyone who has or is volunteering on behalf of Corte Bella or any other organization for that matter. Volunteering and giving of your self is honorable, respectable and a beautiful thing in life. That’s why you feel so good about it when you do it. Every human being has the capacity to understand the humanity and goodness that comes from volunteering. If you are or have volunteered for the Corte Bella community at one time or another, please accept my heartfelt THANK YOU and the appreciation in my heart for who you are and what you do. Your community sees what you are doing and appreciates you very much. You are the engine that makes Corte Bella go hard and strong and full of greatness. You are very special people.

Board Talk April 2019 First of all, I want to thank everyone for voting in the recent election. Between the electronic voting system and the paper ballots, we had the largest member voting turnout ever. The results were sent out to the community in March with actual totals. Michael McVeigh, HOA Board of Directors President
The recent 2019 Annual Membership meeting was also a large member turnout. It lasted longer than originally planned but this is the only opportunity for our community to see what our talented volunteers are doing on your behalf. I announced at that meeting that I submitted my resignation as board president (after three years) effective April 1, 2019. I have one year remaining on my two-year term as a director and felt that with such an outstanding group of directors, we should be looking for someone else to step up as your next board president. I’ll be available to take on other responsibilities and to support the next president in transition. I want to thank everyone for your support over my past five years as a director. Congratulations to Debra Raeder-Gay, Steve Michaud and Kathy Carmickle on your re-election. Congratulations to newly elected director, Linda Wright, and thank you to Michael Koshay for your willingness to serve this community over the past ten months. The IRS Revenue Ruling 70-604 passed by a large margin and the other main ballot issue was a CC&R change that gives the Board an opportunity to adjust the Reserve Fund Fee (RFF) for proposed new capital improvements as they are presented to the members. This RFF fee increase comes at no cost to current homeowners. Corte Bella RFF fees are currently well below the market by over two-thirds.
Speaking of volunteers, April is National Volunteer Recognition Month and the HOA Volunteer Recognition Night is planned for April 8th. As board president, I’ve had the privilege of addressing our volunteer group for the past three years at this event and it’s a very special evening. This year’s theme is “Volunteers are the heart of Corte Bella.” If you attended the Annual Membership Meeting, you saw first-hand what talented volunteers do when they come together and make a difference for Corte Bella. We saw presentations by board liaisons, committee chairs and committee members on the work they did in 2018 and the outstanding plans they have for 2019. Many attendees saw presentations while I saw team work, creative thinking, volunteers and partners in our community delivering the results of their efforts over the past year. Many of these same people that volunteer on our behalf also volunteer outside our gates by giving their time, effort and talent without benefiting monetarily. Our volunteers place the good of others above self and this dedication places them in a very special family. These are the folks that don’t just wait for things to happen; they make things happen. The volunteers in Corte Bella are the ones that can identify what needs to be done and, as Nike would say, “just do it.” You are the people that take pride in your work, feel good about what you are doing and work well with others as a team. Thanks to all of Corte Bella residents who volunteer in any capacity. We know you will continue to inspire others to join this special group. You are the heart of Corte Bella! By the time you read this, the board’s “organizational meeting” will be behind us and I’m looking forward to the next year working with our new board. The next board workshop is planned for Friday, April 19th at 9:00 am and the next open board meeting will be on Wednesday, April 24th at 10:00 am. Your thoughts, opinions and concerns are very important to me as your board president. Contact me at any time, at mmcveigh3@cox.net or at 623-433-9921.
From the Editor’s Desk Linda Wright By definition, a volunteer is “one who freely offers to take part in an enterprise or to undertake a task” or someone who “freely offers to do something” without expecting any compensation. There are so many examples of this kind of thinking here in our community, both inside and outside the gates of Corte Bella. For those of us (like me) who have been here awhile, it’s a constant source of pride and admiration for those who give of their time and use their expertise to help make things better for the rest of
us here in Corte Bella; who work to improve the larger community around us; and who unselfishly put themselves out there to get it done, whatever it may be. Thank you to each of you who have given of your time and talent towards something bigger than just your own existence. Bravo. Good job. Thank you. This issue of the CB Times celebrates and salutes you during National Volunteer Recognition Month.

CULINARY
Pan Roasted Lamb Loin with Spinach and Herbs Executive Chef Dan Haywood, Anacapa Restaurant
Method: In a small bowl, combine 2 tablespoons of the oil with the garlic, shallot, spinach, and herbs. Using a knife, filet the lamb loins in half but keep connected, like a butterfly. Lay flat and pound gently with a mallet or small pan to flatten a little. Lay the loins on a work surface, fat side down, and season with salt and pepper. Spread the herb paste and spinach all over the lamb.
Ingredients: •
3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
•
2 garlic cloves, minced
•
1 large shallot, minced
•
1 cup spinach, wilted, drained, chopped
•
1 teaspoon minced rosemary
•
1 teaspoon minced sage
•
1 teaspoon minced marjoram
•
1 teaspoon minced thyme
•
2 boneless lamb loins with tenderloins attached
•
Salt and freshly ground pepper
Roll each loin over the tenderloin and rib apron to make a neat roulade. With butcher’s twine, tie the meat at 1-inch intervals. Season the lamb with salt and pepper. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. In a 12-inch skillet, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Add the lamb loins and cook over moderate heat, turning until browned all over; about 10 minutes total. Transfer the skillet to the oven and roast the loins for 10-15 minutes until an instant-read thermometer inserted in the thickest part registers 130 degrees. Transfer the loins to a carving board to rest for 5-10 minutes. Cut off the strings. Carve the loins into 1-inch-thick slices and serve with your favorite side dishes.

CULINARY
Wine & Food: Uncorked Deborah Damery Lazear, CSW
Cheese, please! In my “younger years” (read: poor college student) wine and cheese parties meant lots of friends, cheap and cheerful red wine, and a few hunks of cheddar and Swiss cheese with a blue if you were adventurous. The taste of the wine was masked by the cheese; a great budget stretcher! Things have gotten more sophisticated. Here is a resource guide to the pairing of cheeses and wines. Good cheese is expensive and so deserving of respect. We begin with a cheese tray guidelines. Something young and fresh, e.g. chèvre. Something ripe and rich; e.g. Brie. Something powerful; Époisses is a favorite of mine. Something salty and hard such as Parmigiano Reggiano. This is the minimum. For a larger selection, add a blue: Humbolt Fog, Gorgonzola, or a mild Campazola, which is half Brie half Blue. Add nuts to your cheese tray. The tannin in the nuts brings the cheese closer to the wine if it is red. Add some dried fruit such as apricots or dates. The sweetness will pair well if you are serving a white wine. Finally, some slices of apple, rinsed in lemon water to preserve their color, will add the acidity to cleanse the palate after eating a piece of cheese. Be careful of those crackers! Strong flavors can overshadow the lovely cheese and foil the wine. Carriers of choice are French baguettes cut in thin diagonal slices, water crackers unflavored, rosemary crackers, or sea salt crusted crackers. Check your crackers if they have seeds such as flax or sesame. These seeds turn rancid easily and will spoil your cheese tray. One good whiff will tell you!
Wine choice + cheese pairings You can approach the pairing from either side. Pick a few of your favorite cheeses. Murray’s cheeses at Fry’s provide an excellent selection. Ask for the cheese monger, David to guide you. If you want to start with the wine, choose one or two whites and one red. Add a sparkling or a dessert wine such as Sauternes or Ice Wine. Then follow the suggestions below to create your cheese pairings. Remember the guidelines above when picking your cheeses. It is preferable to leave the cheeses in large chunks allowing your guests to linger over the selection while cutting pieces themselves. Choose cheese knives that work well with the cheese’s structure. A pointed knife to break off chunks of Parmesan, a longer blade for soft cheese, and a flat blade for the crumply Gorgonzola. Pick a wine glass that has no color or painted design. One size will do for all the wines including the sparkling. The exception is the dessert wines which are served in smaller glasses because of their potency.
And here we go! Sparkling • • •
Brut Rosé sparkling wine + Gruyère Blanc de Blanc sparkling wine + triple crème brie Cava Spanish sparkling wine + young sheep’s milk cheese
White • • • • • • • • • •
Gewürztraminer + Munster Chenin Blanc + Gruyère Grüner Veltliner + Chèvre Pinot Blanc + Greek feta Sauvignon Blanc + Wisconsin feta Vouvray + aged Gouda Orvieto + Pecorino Alsace Pinot Gris + Époisses Chardonnay + Brie or Asiago Riesling (dry or off dry) + Emmental or Havarti
Red • • • • • • • • •
Brachetto + Gorgonzola Syrah + aged Cheddar Shiraz + Gouda Sangiovese + Parmesan Pinot Noir + mushroom Brie or peppercorn Chèvre Beaujolais + Cambazola Cabernet Sauvignon + semisoft sheep’s milk cheese studded with peppercorns, or aged Gouda, or Dry Jack Merlot + Monterey Jack Zinfandel + Asiago
Dessert • •
Sauternes + Roquefort Port + Humboldt Fog or Rogue Creamery Blue
Cheers! If you have a Wine & Cheese pairing question, send it to me at deborahDLazear@gmail.com. Note to our readers: Ms. Lazear is a Wine & Food Instructor at San Diego State University where she has taught for fifteen years. She holds Wine Educator certificates from the Society of Wine Educators with specialized certificates in Bordeaux, Rhône Valley, Spain, and Napa Valley. Her pairing menus have twice been recognized in the Wall Street Journal.

COMMITTEE
Closing Up For The Summer? Going On Vacation? Here’s a handy guide to closing up your house for an extended period of time. These are suggestions – use any that you feel would be beneficial.
•
If turning off the refrigerator, empty the contents and clean the interior
•
If leaving the refrigerator on, toss any perishable items. Turn off the automatic ice maker and empty the bin of ice cubes. A full fridge runs more efficiently, so consider filling the fridge with bottled water.
•
Remove any combustibles from the garage
•
If you are leaving a car and have a side garage door, consider parking the car in front of
•
the side door so it can’t be opened while you’re away.
•
If you are leaving a car, disconnect the battery
•
If you have a golf cart, add water to the battery
•
Provide a key and your contact information to a trusted neighbor or local friend – be sure the HOA has their information in case of emergency If you have your calls forwarded from your land line, set it now
1-2 weeks before •
Arrange to stop or forward your mail; stop newspaper deliveries
•
Begin emptying the refrigerator and pantry
•
Empty fountains and bird baths of all standing water
•
Arrange for any landscaping, pool, or pest control services you will need while away
•
Notify the HOA of your departure / return date
1-2 days before •
Store/cover your patio furniture; give away any plants that will not survive
•
Be sure the batteries are fresh in your smoke, fire detectors, watering system, security system, etc.
•
•
Seal up any non-refrigerated food products in bags or plastic containers

COMMUNITY
The Gift of Time and Talent Linda Wright
A Story of Volunteers Among Us It is always inspirational to learn about good people who live in one’s community who are truly doing great things to help others. During the month of April, there is a lot of focus on “recognizing” volunteers, thanking those folks publicly and presenting awards and such. To me, it’s worth a look to find out the people who are donating their time and energy to worthwhile organizations outside the gates of Corte Bella. This article is an attempt to call attention to some of these exceptional people. Nancy Healy has been volunteering for St. Vincent de Paul in two of their soup kitchens operations. She serves meals at the Santa Teresita Catholic Church’s facility in El Mirage and also helps to do the reclamation of donated food at the Phoenix warehouse. She found out about this service through a friend who asked her to come help out. This was eight years ago. Nancy believes her work helps improve the lives of the people who need this kind of assistance. She has too many good memories to list – she feels enriched by volunteering here. Paula Penkauskas also works at this same soup kitchen, serving meals every Monday morning. She too has been volunteering there for eight years. Paula values her experience and believes offering not only food but friendship is a great thing to do. She knows the names of the regular customers and loves that these folks smile when they see her. Nancy and Paula are willing to discuss this volunteer service with anyone who might be interested and also indicate that more information is available on the website at www.stvincentdepaul. net or let Paula know and she will take you with her during her Monday service so you can check it out. Call Paula at 623-2154021. AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) here in the Northwest Valley/Sun City West is very fortunate to have a number of Corte Bella residents volunteering their time and expertise to their organization. Corte Bella resident Robin Mandell became interested in being an instructor for the organization’s Smart Driver course after attending the class in 2007, just after she retired from thirty two years in business. After twelve years of teaching this course, she is still doing it! After being trained, she is required to teach at least three courses annually. She typically does ten classes per year which she can arrange according to her schedule. Robin teaches in Corte Bell and other locations in the immediate area. She’s enjoyed meeting so many of the some 100,000 seniors in the Phoenix area. She’s very pleased when students appreciate her insights and her volunteered service. She finds many of her students return to retake her classes. Robin would be happy to discuss her experiences with anyone and help them get involved. Just ask her! There are quite a few Corte Bella residents who are helping with the AARP Tax Guide program. Bonnie Ellis got involved after a friend suggested she volunteer. Marylee Planer, whose career was at one time with the IRS, worked in Oregon managing
the Oregon Volunteer Income Tax (VITA) program providing free tax form preparation for low income persons and seniors. This program was turned over to AARP. When she retired she volunteered immediately, first in Oregon and then in Sun City West, Arizona. She is involved in both helping clients but also in planning, organizing and teaching, and works three times weekly. Marylee values the connections she makes with her clients and how appreciative they are for the assistance provided. Both ladies work closely with Kim Abrew. Kim was introduced into the program by a neighbor and quickly progressed from tax preparation to teaching the training class for volunteers involved with the service. She enjoys all the people she has met over the years and how the service the program provides truly helps those who need assistance. Her husband, Glen Abrew, also volunteers here and manages technical issues with the program’s computer systems. Additionally, Corte Bella residents Mike Terrell, Brenda Boucher and Betty Stahl are all volunteers with the AARP Tax Guide. Thompson Ranch Elementary School (Dysart School District, located in El Mirage on Thompson Ranch Road) is just down the road from Corte Bella with a student body of 900 students. The school has thirty three classrooms and a large need for volunteers in many areas. Colleen Miller volunteers in the ELL Kindergarten class at the school and has been doing it for five years. She is a retired teacher and she knows the importance of children getting the right, positive start in school. She loves seeing the tremendous growth the students make throughout the year. She enjoys feeling she contributed to that progress. Colleen also says it’s very satisfying when the students recognize her and what to let her know how they are doing in school. Rick Furkert also volunteers at this school and over the past five years he has been involved with the math program. This year, he is working with eighth grade students. He works with small student groups and assists those who need some individual attention and instruction. Rick has always enjoyed working in an educational environment with students. He believes the need at this school is great and that he makes a difference with what he contributes. He feels the teachers are very appreciative of his efforts and are supportive. He became involved through Hands On Phoenix/ Your Experience Counts www.handsonphoenix.org/YEC and he states this organization provides training and orientation to classroom situations. Rich loves when he sees the “light bulb go on” for a student but feels that the long range goal of supporting the teacher is also very rewarding. To volunteer at this school you must be fingerprinted and pass a background check. You start this by registering with the Dysart School district – you can then request to volunteer at Thompson Ranch Elementary. The district has volunteer information on their website at www.dysart. org/sites/default.aspx?pgid=28 or you can call the district office at 623-876-7875. You can also email volunteer@dysart.org. There’s a world of opportunity for volunteering out there beyond our community’s boundaries. Maybe there’s something there just right for you.

A Chance to Volunteer in Your Community to continue building an organization that serves and addresses their community needs for an aging population.
Submitted by Robin Mandell From Trudy Ware Volunteer Engagement Manager Northwest Valley Connect tware@northwestvalleyconnect.org
Community Engagement: Northwest Valley Connect, NVC, is a nonprofit transportation organization that provides referral or a free ride service to west valley residents who are 65 plus years, those with disabilities, and veterans. Since inception in 2014 when NVC Mobility service responded to 288 ride requests, the growth today seems staggering. The number of ride requests for 2018 was 12,000 with 11,000 rides provided by the Mobility Volunteer Driver Program. Believe it or not, NVC is looking as far out as September and October with renovation plans. We are renovating our focus as a volunteer transportation business and how we provide our services. NVC now serves ten west valley communities where transportation services are lacking or disrupted and the aging population, particularly seniors, is growing. Compared to the year 2000, by 2050 the number of people age 65 and older is projected to more than double, the number of people age 75 and over is projected to triple, and the number of people age 85 and over is projected to quintuple. More of the aging population will be seniors.
individuals at their home while offering a door-through-door service and transport to a destination. Many seniors appreciate the once-a-week scheduled group trips to malls, social activities and events. For some locals Lyft is available and NVC Mobility Center Representatives provide ride referrals for our senior callers. Higher volume rider demands require more volunteers to ensure an aging population can access transportation services that accommodate their mobility in and around the west valley area. In preparation, Northwest Valley Connect is reaching out to engage volunteers who have a desire
We are gearing up for tomorrow’s transportation demands and asking you to participate. Don’t lose what you’ve been good at doing – bring your skills to NVC. We have positions open for Mobility Center Representatives, Mobility Center Driver Program, Project Supervision, Service Trainer, Data Entry, and Administrative Assistant. Let us help you transfer your capabilities to opportunities that are of benefit to others and a reward to you. NVC is a great organization and the people you work with are a joy. Visit our website: northwestvalleyconnect.org and give me a call at 623-282-9304.
Attention is drawn to senior mobility and independence, which are contributing factors to the rise in public awareness regarding accessibility and characteristics of transportation services. NVC Mobility Center provides four major services that are handled by Mobility Center Volunteer Representatives who transition callers to a Ride-Connect service either as a referral or NVC volunteer free ride. Mobility Center Driver Service is provided freely by volunteers to individuals who otherwise would not have transport to health services, shopping or social events. These volunteers use personal vehicles or NVC accessible vans for picking up

Corte Bella Vets News Karen Starkman What a great success! The fifth annual golf tournament proceeds will go a long way to help alleviate veteran homelessness. This year’s tournament raised in excess of $30,000 and will help many veteran transitional homes within the greater Phoenix area.

Donations will primarily be given to Project Veterans Pride’s James Walton Home, Veterans First LTD’s Mary Ellen’s Place, and the Catholic Charities’ MANA program. Special thanks go out to all who participated, donated, and/or sponsored our event. Additionally, we would be very remiss if we did not extend our gratitude and appreciation to the many nongolfing volunteers, as we could not have succeeded without them.

Midas foursome (CB Vets golf tournament biggest sponsor) from left to right: Justin Bowen, Wade Petersen, Thomas Poole, Tony D’Andrea Since our inception in 2014, the Corte Bella Vets have raised more than $190,000 and have dedicated 100% of those funds to veterans’ needs within Arizona. So many of our veterans have been positively impacted through the monies raised, our annual Clothing/flatware drive, the Christmas stocking event and the Sundome Plaza Angel Tree Program (which is also sponsored by the Corte Bella Vets.) Planning will begin soon for next year’s golf tournament (February 23, 2020.) We encourage everyone to check out our website for updates, full disclosure of sponsored charities, speaker events, dances, and other events at www.cortebellavets.org. Please keep in mind that no veteran should be homeless in our country and that is why the Corte Bella Vets are joining with other nonprofits to do something about veteran homelessness. Thank you, Corte Bella, for your continued support. The armed services flags of the United States of America military on display at the CB Vets golf tournament.

Corte Bella Adventure Group Steve Downing So many trails and so few Tuesdays to hike them. We are really blessed to have all the hiking, mountain biking and horseback trails in Arizona - trails that keep us in the desert to the trails climbing through the pines and at least one trail that takes us to through the tundra of Humphrey’s Peak. It seems there is never enough hiking Tuesdays to cover all the trails I would like to schedule through the cooler season. For those of us who live here full time, I plan to schedule many more hikes up north during our hot summer. A few weeks ago, Bob and Elaine Fletcher hosted a hike with two separate lengths and levels of difficulty. While Bob took part of the group on the nine+ miler, Elaine led a group on a shorter six mile hike. I wouldn’t call either hike easy as both entailed a good climb and workout. Both groups came off trail at about the same time, so it worked out great. We also had our annual Full Moon hike where we attempt to navigate a four mile trail up a ridge without the use of flashlights.
Full moon rising during a night hike by the Adventure Club. This year took us to Deem Hills, where we have nice views of the valley upon reaching the ridge. It was a little cool that evening, but it doesn’t take long walking uphill before we warm up nicely. These night hikes are a lot of fun, even if we plan it to use a flashlight or headlamp for the whole hike.
Adventure Club hikes a trail switchback in the White Tank Mountains.

SOuL Keeps on Giving to Thompson Ranch Elementary School Linda Wright, SOuL member Corte Bella’s Smiling Out Loud (SOuL) ladies charity support organization was busy in February and March with their efforts to assist Thompson Ranch Elementary School in El Mirage, just down the road from our community.
These are just a few of the teaching supplies purchased with the donation from SOuL.
Assistant Principal Casey Kuhn and Office Manager Veronica Navarrete accept donated shoes from SOuL, represented by Linda Wright. At the end of February, the group donated 114 pairs of children’s shoes (close-toed sneakers) to the school’s “helping hands” closet. These shoes will be given out to children who are carefully selected by the school based on need. These donations came directly from the SOuL membership and other generous Corte Bella residents who wanted to be a part of this effort. Thank you to everyone who donated – the school is very grateful and appreciative. This donation means that since last fall, SOuL has donated 242 pairs of shoes to the school (which has 900 students in their student body, many of which are living below the poverty line.)
SOuL member Mary Beaudoin in action at Thompson Ranch Elementary School. On March 4th, National Read Across America Day, ten SOuL members along with two spouses were at the school to read to children in Pre-Kindergarten to Fourth grade classes. Many of the volunteers stayed all day to participate and read to various grade
levels. The program was kicked off with a Dr. Seuss assembly and our volunteers got right into the spirit of all things Cat in the Hat! SOuL volunteers all reported having a wonderful and memorable experience at the school and found the interaction with the students to be a good use of their time. Principal Dr. Rachal Saunders praised the SOul “readers” and expressed her appreciation for all the volunteers and their donated time. Thank you to Sandy Connelly, Carol Courter, Nancy Healy, Diane Kingsley, Deborah and David Lazear, Kay Mueller, Debora Ruffie, Po Plantz, Gerri Snyder, Mary Beaudoin, Maggie and Larry Santschi for being such wonderful representatives for SOuL. SOuL donated funds to purchase much needed instructional supplies for the 33 classrooms at Thompson Ranch Elementary school. The ordered supplies have been received and the teaching staff is overjoyed with these supplemental teaching tools that are now available for their classrooms thanks David Lazear and Deborah Lazear to SOuL’s generous read to kids at Thompson Ranch donation. SOul believes Elementary. that helping this school is helping make our community stronger and better. Thank you, Corte Bella, for supporting SOuL and our charity fund raising efforts. You’re making a difference in the Northwest Valley.

Corte Bella FSR Team Wins Award On this past March 8th, First Service Residential Arizona conducted the company’s annual meeting. First Service Residential associates gathered from all over Arizona to spend the day celebrating a very successful 2018. Some of the associates serving almost 400 communities throughout Arizona were rewarded for their hard work in several categories. Our own Corte Bella team received what General Manager, Mike Arrington calls “The Big One.” Corte Bella’s team received the “Onsite Team Excellence Award”. This award is presented to the most outstanding team performance assigned to a specific First Service Residential managed community. Mike was heard to have said, “If I could have chosen one award that I wanted to win the most, it would have been this one!” Additionally, Corte Bella’s Food and Beverage Manager, Jill Machay also won an individual award for “Impact Player of the Year” at Corte Bella. As the leader of the Corte Bella team, Mike said, “I am extremely proud of the team and what they have accomplished working for each other with a common goal to serve Corte Bella well.” Mike also said, “I believe Jill is very deserving of the award she received and that she had worked extremely hard alongside Executive Chef Dan Haywood to meet expectations and to improve service standards inside the Corte Bella Food and Beverage Operation.” Congratulations to all the employees of FSR here in Corte Bella upon receiving this outstanding team award! Your hard work and dedication has been duly recognized and celebrated. Corte Bella is very proud of you all and of the leadership provided in each division, and by Michael Arrington as General Manager. Hats off to each of you and also to Jill Machay for her special recognition. Way to go, everyone.

Friends of Italy Club Keith Fowler, FOI Coordinator The Friends of Italy Club will be wrapping up their 11th season of dinner/dance events on March 29th with The Faded Jeans Band and a very casual, comfortable evening. Each event this season has been a tremendous sell-out and it’s time to thank everyone who has contributed to such success. First, the Friends of Italy Team of BJ and Paul Knowles, Karen and Jim Starkman, Laney Patrick, Dave Saulnier and Sherry Hayes. None of these events could have been planned and executed without their fresh ideas, time and dedication to the continued success of Friends of Italy. Jayke Whittington and his team have managed the “to capacity” set-up for each event alongside Jill Machay and her team preparing that set-up and then providing excellent table and bar service to all. Executive Chef Dan Haywood and his Anacapa team agreed to try a few new things this season and in doing so, resulted in fabulous tasting, full course dinners at each event. We (the FOI Team) also want to thank all of you for coming to these events, buying the tickets in advance, buying raffle tickets
to support the entertainment costs, and buying our new Friends of Italy shirts, which have also helped to offset expenses. It’s all of you who make this fun and help keep the traditions of the Friends of Italy on-going and growing for the future. The team will take a break after the March 29th event and we wish our seasonal residents, as well the year-rounders here in Corte Bella, a safe and healthy summer. The team will be back at it in September to take next seasons reservations. Emails will go out late summer to everyone on the mailing list, with preliminary details for each event and how to secure your reservations. We’re adding a fifth event in November 2019 to extend the season and accommodate the ever-growing wait list we had this season. As in the past, you will be able to pre-pay and guarantee your seats for any or all of the season’s events. We look forward to seeing you next season! Grazie and Caio! The Friends of Italy (FOI) Club is a social/dining club that has gatherings in the Corte Bella Social Hall four to five times during the year. To secure your place on future email announcements, please contact Event Coordinator Keith Fowler at FOI_Keith@msn.com. “EAT, DRINK, ENJOY” with the “Friends of Italy” Club!!
Your Corte Bella Garden in April “Ladybug” Deborah Lazear After the frost we had this winter, there is a lot to do this month to get our gardens healthy and disease free before the summer heat hits. Several of these tips are “green” in nature, using fewer pesticides and more natural substances. • Go Green! Place your used coffee grinds around roses, flowers, and herbs for a shot of acid. They love it. • Check roses for aphids. A spray of one teaspoon of liquid dish soap to a gallon of water should do the trick. • Mix white vinegar and 3 drops of dish soap in a spray bottle to kill weeds in your driveway. • To encourage tree roots to spread out and away from the trunk, move water emitters out to the drip line. Trees will suffer less in the summer heat with a wider root system. • Fertilize roses full strength for the last time until September. We will be switching to a weaker strength over the summer. • Fertilize citrus in pots. • Fertilize palms • Place mulch around roots of plants and roses to protect against drying out. Remember not to allow the mulch to touch the trunk as this encourages rot. • REPLACE YOUR WATERING CONTROLLER BATTERY!

Whether you need to or not. The consequences of a battery failure while you are away for a cool trip to the coast can be heart breaking. Move tree ties up or down a few inches to avoid scarring the bark. Check agaves for snout weevil (1” long black “uglies”.) Do heavy pruning of oleanders this month. Plant penstemons this month to attract hummingbirds. Plant basil in your herb garden if you didn’t do it in March. Prune bougainvillea, lantana, and verbena again. Good tomato choice is “Better Bush”. Sow warm season vegetables such as snap beans, lima beans, okra, cucumber, melon, squash, beets, leaf lettuce, carrots, radish, and spinach.

What’s Happening in Corte Bella For Pam Lawrence, compiled by Linda Wright
Piano Men Generations Concert February 16 Corte Bella’s Santa Barbara room was transformed into a concert hall with two grand pianos, two amazing “Piano Men” and their supporting musicians and backup singers. Terry Davis and his son Nick provided two hours of non-stop entertainment that had the capacity crowd on their feet applauding wildly after the final song. Thank you TAD Management for the trip down memory lane and a wonderful new set of musical memories.
Annual Secure Shredding Event February 25 Once again, Corte Bella was happy to make use of a secure way to shred and dispose of sensitive papers and documents. The three hour service was heavily used by residents from start to finish.
Brighton’s Collectables Fashion Show February 26
Day Trip to Algodones, Mexico February 22 It was another successful day trip across the border for a full bus of Corte Bella residents who wanted to experience a Mexican shopping adventure. All attendees came away happy and safely returned home after a long day on the bus.
It was a lovely afternoon for lucky ladies of Corte Bella who enjoyed a delicious salad and quiche lunch from the Anacapa and beautifully decorated tables plus a glass of sparkling wine. The fashion show of ladies from Corte Bella modeling the beautifully crafted jewelry, eyewear, purses and other accessories from Brighton’s Collectables was so enjoyable for all in attendance. Thank you to Cindy Buda, Liz Blake, Sherry Hayes, LuAnn Hunt, Deborah Lazear, Barb Morin, Betty Ray, Judy Rischall, and Nancy Wendler for providing the perfect way to display all the wonderful items from Brighton’s Collectables.

State Farm Football Stadium Tour February 27 It was a new event for Corte Bella and the fifty seven residents who participated were treated wonderfully by the staff guide at the football stadium where the Arizona Cardinals play. The guided tour was very well presented and full of inside fun facts about the facility. Lunch after the tour was a good time for Corte Bella folks to mingle and mix with others on this great day trip.
Duets Show – Tribute to Cher, Elton John, Liza and Tom Jones March 8 It was a sold-out crowd again in the Santa Barbara room for this fabulous musical tribute show featuring four icons of the American popular music world. The talented performers really took audience participation to the next level during the show. Check out the Corte Bella website for photographic evidence of this statement. There isn’t anything better than Corte Bella concerts right here in our own community.
Cooking with Chef Dan Green Isle Recipes March 1 Executive Chef Dan was in his element once again for this cooking class featuring Irish inspired cuisine. The carrot soup and Irish brown bread was enjoyed by everyone. The execution of the preparation of the stuffed lamb loin was something to behold and it was delicious. The dessert of handmade boozy truffles was pure afternoon delight. These classes are just the best thing going month after month.
Corte Bella Sunday Cabaret with Thaddeus Rose March 10
Barleens Arizona Opry Variety Lunch and Show
As always, there weren’t any empty tables for this cabaret and the Thaddeus Rose Duo entertained everyone with their great musical arrangements. Bistro food by the Anacapa provided the right kind of nourishment so everyone could dance the evening away. Sundays in Corte Bella are wonderful things.
March 2 There is truly no better way to spend a Saturday afternoon than to travel across the valley to Apache Junction and take in a show at Barleens Arizona Opery. The luncheon was filling and satisfying. The rock and roll variety show was perfectly wonderful. Fifty three Corte Bella residents came away from this delightful day trip knowing they got their money’s worth. And, having Mike again as the driver on the All Board America bus, was the icing on the cake.

Corte Bella April Tennis Club News Upcoming club events include the weekly clinic for everyone on Wednesdays at 8:00 AM on court 4, Wimbledon Warm Up Tournament on April 13th and the Queen Victoria Tournament on May 18th.
MaryLee Planer Twenty members of the Corte Bella Tennis Club (CBTC) were pounding the courts early in the morning on February 16th, celebrating Valentine’s Day with a tournament hosted by Social Co-Chairs Dave Culley and Donna Norton. Valentine’s Day dress was encouraged, as evidenced by the group photo! After drawing numbers to determine initial court placement, the players played three forty minute sets, rotating courts based on wins, losses and changing partners each time. Greg Peck served as the court official, using an audacious whistle to signal the end of the session and keeping track of the number of games won by each player.
Tournament winner Ming Fu
The CBTC welcomes new members! Dues are just $15 annually and the club is just the right size for getting to know other players while having fun through physical activity. Plus, there’s always the great food! MaryLee Planer
After play, club members had less than an hour to get home and put the finishing touches on their dishes — great food is a recurring theme — before returning for a poolside lunch. Tournament winners were Ming Fu and Doug Kitts. Greg Albrecht scored a bottle of wine for lowest score but it was rumored that this was due to a mix up between tennis and golf scoring objectives!

Please show your resident card in the golf shop to receive the offer.
