ASSOCIATION
Enter at Your Own Risk Did you know that the Corte Bella gates are outfitted with video cameras? Many people don’t know, even though these are mounted in plain sight. Each gate is surveilled by a half dozen cameras, all installed for different angles of view. Last year, I got video from one camera of someone attempting to disable the other five cameras while he was in the act of doing so.
Mike Arrington, General Manager
Recently, I was approached by a generous resident who offered to pay half the cost of replacing the all the existing cameras. Of course, I accepted the $6,000 offer. The same resident was responsible for donating the original cameras and, once again, he requested anonymity. Although I’d love to recognize him for his generosity, I respect his request to remain anonymous.
In November, and because of this generosity, all twelve (12) cameras were replaced with brand new, upgraded, high definition video cameras that record video of the comings and goings at both gates on a 24 hour, 7 days a week basis. The video is then stored in an archive on the Cloud so it may be retrieved if needed. This video has been helpful to us and the sheriff’s office on occasion. The main function of the cameras has been to determine liability involving vehicle accidents at the gates. Often, someone without access trying to enter the property, fails to observe the rules and follows another vehicle through. In doing so, they damage the gate and/or their own vehicle. In six years at Corte Bella, no one has ever self-reported an accident at either gate, except to claim damage to their vehicle and demand payment for the repair to their car. When I tell them that the entire sequence is on video and that I have reviewed it, a dial tone is usually the next thing I hear. It’s true, cameras never lie.

The Government Affairs Committee Update Debra Raeder-Gay, Board of Directors Liaison The Government Affairs Committee (GAC) Charter was adopted by the Board of Directors on June 25, 2013. “The purpose of the GAC is to serve in an advisory capacity to the Board with respect to governmental affairs, including but not limited to transportation issues, utility service issues, postal issues, taxing considerations (which includes school and other taxes), HOA Legislative issues, as well as zoning considerations. While the Committee is charged with general information gathering and updates on government projects; any other activities undertaken by the Committee shall be specifically approved by the Board.”(Government Affairs Committee Charter) Since its inception, the GAC has played a pivotal role in a number of important issues facing the homeowners of Corte Bella, including, but not limited to, the following: •
Purchase of street poles and lights from APS, which will result in substantial savings to the community;
With the resignation of all members of the GAC at the June 2019 Board meeting, the Board subsequently authorized the reconstitution of the GAC and solicited applications from the Community. Five applications were received and an organizational meeting was held on October 14th to introduce the prospective members and to solicit recommendations for a Chair and Vice Chair. At the Board of Director’s open meeting on October 23rd, the Board unanimously approved the applicants as members of the GAC: Daniel Luparello, Duane Yantorno, Bob Anderson, Fran Cappa and Ron Williams. The Board also approved the appointment of Duane Yantorno as Chair, and Daniel Luparello as Vice Chair. Congratulations to these new committee members. At their October 28th meeting, the Committee received an update on outstanding GAC activities and began discussions to prioritize issues and concerns needing the GAC’s attention including: •
Transportation (Williams Road);
•
Wastewater and water issues ultimately resulting in substantial savings to the community;
•
Rezoning request for property next to Sunleya development;
•
Peoria Unified School District budget override, which recently failed at the polls.
•
Peoria Unified School District budget override and future school tax issues; and
•
Possible land acquisition.
The Board extends their appreciation and thanks to the residents who served on the GAC and worked tirelessly to address these and other important issues: Diane Smith, Chair; Doug Edwards, Vice Chair; Randee Hendryks; Bob Baldesari; Jim Dowen; and Wayne Magee.
The next open meeting of the GAC is scheduled for Monday, November 25th at 11:00 AM in the Laguna Room.

Food & Wine: Uncorked Sparkling lights, sparkling festivities and sparkling wines - it is the holidays so get your sparkle on! For a buffet, try a Spanish Cava. Its dry to sweet, so check the alcohol level(10% abv moves it into the dry arena). Grapes include parellada, xarel-lo and macabeo plus chardonnay. To qualify as Cava, it must be made in the same process as French Champagne, where secondary fermentation takes place in the individual bottle. Cava tends to be full bodied with a generous acidity. Holiday brunch calls for Prosecco from the Veneto area of Italy. Made principally from grapes of the same name with small amounts Pinot Bianco and Pinot Grigio, most are dry and spumante though still fruity with medium acid. Perfect for bellinis (traditionally peach juice but cranberry juice is yummy.) Crémant d’Alsace is a sparkling pinto blanc, auxerrois, pinot noir, pinot gris and/or chardonnay from the Alsace region of France, 300 miles east of Paris in the Vosges Mountains. After
Champagne, this is France’s most northerly wine region. The acidity is pronounced, which makes it top notch for a buffet of cheeses and meats. The Loire Valley of France makes a sparkling wine around the village of Saumur. It is low-alcohol and high acid, another excellent food pairing wine. Most producers are owned by Champagne firms so the quality is very high. The Côte Chalonnaise in France is home to Rully and a center of sparkling wine production in Burgundy. Look for Crémant de Bourgogne. It is made using the Champagne method with crisp lemony nutty overtones. Many other countries produce a top drop of sparkling: look for value from Australia, New Zealand and England! The kings of sparkling wines are from Champagne, France. The word Champagne may only be used if the wine is made in the Champagne region of France. Its extra dry to sweet and everything in between. Today’s trend is toward smaller growers who put their own style on the wine.

David Wright, Long Term Planning Committee Chair Mission Statement 5: Promote a Sense of Community
DŝƐƐŝŽŶ ^ƚĂƚĞŵĞŶƚ Ϯ
Our fifth, and final, Long-Term Plan Mission Statement contains two goals: • Increase involvement and volunteerism; and • Provide a broad array of programs, activities and amenities.
ŶƐƵƌĞ ^ŽƵŶĚ Θ ^ƵƐƚĂŝŶĂďůĞ &ŝƐĐĂů Θ KƉĞƌĂƚŝŽŶĂů WƌĂĐƚŝĐĞƐ
The first goal is the lifeblood of every successful Homeowners Association (HOA): People freely donating time from their busy (or leisurely) lives to lend a hand for the greater common good can make or break an HOA. Corte Bella is governed and guided by volunteers. The Board of Directors, the executive committees, the Anacapa advisory group, the website team, the newcomer welcoming group, everyone who actively supports the many HOA events – all are volunteers dedicated to making their community a better place. Hopefully, the steady influx of new people will provide a continuing diverse source of replacements for those whose terms in service are winding down. For those with other skills or desires, there are other volunteer opportunities outside of Corte Bella. A great place to begin your search is the Corte Bella website. It has a page – Volunteer Opportunities – under the HOA main menu tab which lists many worthwhile organizations in the local and greater Phoenix area.
Who’s Responsible? Steve DeBoer, Chair of the Neighborhood Safety and Awareness Committee To paraphrase a line from President Kennedy’s 1961 inauguration speech: Ask not what others can do for you but what you can do for yourself. Society as a whole, and people in general, seem to have decided it is up to someone else to take care of them and solve all their problems. Often people live and act as if they are in some kind of protective cocoon; immune to the bad things and bad people that plague society. When something does happen, their first questions are “Who is responsible. What are they going to do to deal with MY problem?” Not how did this happen and what can I do to prevent this from happening again? Of the few incidents which have occurred within our community since 2015, many result from people not following some basic rules of personal safety and security. Here are a few things you should do: •
Keep your garage door closed (this is a CC&R requirement) and your house locked.
•
If you’ll be away, arrange for someone (maybe a neighbor) to check your residence on a regular basis.

The second goal has been achieved through a lot of hard work on the part of the First Services Residential management and support staff plus a host of volunteers. A look at the CB Times or the CB Website provides a guide into the many diverse clubs, interest groups and HOA activities available to Corte Bella residents. The list continues to grow and change over time. This goal was achieved, in spades, in July 2016 when the HOA created the Lifestyle Manager position and had the good fortune to hire Pam Lawrence as Lifestyle Manager. She has made a world of difference – all good – for Corte Bella. We look forward to the continuation of this spirit of volunteerism as a steady influx of diverse and talented people move into Corte Bella.
•
Provide the HOA or neighbor with emergency contact information.
•
Stop your mail or have it picked up.
•
Use interior and exterior lighting (within ARC guidelines). Exterior lighting is a very effective tool for protecting your property and safety. Lighting should be used whether you are home or away.
•
Lock your vehicle and do not leave valuables in it. This also applies to golf carts.
•
Make sure you know who is coming to do work for you. Are they listed with PORA or the BBB; are they licensed, bonded and insured?
•
If you see something; say something. The most important thing you can do to insure personal safety and the security of property is to be situationally aware. Pay attention to your surroundings and people within those surroundings. If something does not look right, most likely it is not. Say something or call 911.

COMMUNITY
Corte Bella Vets News Karen Starkman Once again the Corte Bella Vets are jointly working with the Sundome Plaza Merchants Association in support of their “Angel Tree for Veterans” Program. Four Christmas Trees are located on the sidewalks in front of plaza businesses located at 13519 W. Camino Del Sol in Sun City West. Please pick up a Red, Green, Blue or Pink Tag and drop your gift with the tag attached on top of the gift prior to December 15th to the Sundome Plaza. Gifts will be distributed to the Northern Arizona Veterans Hospital in Prescott, Mary Ellen’s Place in Phoenix, VA Health Care System Community Living Center in Phoenix, and the James Walton Home in Phoenix. On behalf of the Corte Bella Vets and America’s Mighty Warriors, we wish to thank the Corte Bella Community for your generous support of our 3rd Annual Christmas Stocking Event for our deployed troops. With your overwhelming support, we sent out 270 stockings to deployed special forces. This represents a 13% increase over our 2018 event. Additionally, your generosity continued with our Toilet Paper and Paper Towel Collection Drive. Paper products are one of the biggest expenses for those organizations who provide transitional housing to our Veterans. Your donations were distributed to the James Walton Home, U.S. Vets and the MANA (Marines, Army, Navy, Air Force) House.
CB Vets President Retired Army Colonel Larry Leighton at his recent induction into the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame (AVHOF). Congratulations to our CB Vets President, Retired Army Colonel Larry Leighton, for his recent induction to the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame (AVHOF). On October 18th, along with twenty one other Patriots, Larry was inducted into the AVHOF. The AVHOF annually recognizes and honors Arizona Veterans who have made significant civic contributions. Honorees are veterans who have honorably served their country and who have also served and inspired their fellow citizens with deeds and accomplishments beyond their military service.
What Does The Salvation Army Do With Corte Bella Donations? Captain Mark Merritt, Sun Cities Salvation Army Corps The SALVATION ARMY is the largest charity in the world. Thirteen percent of donations to the SALVATION ARMY go to administrative expenses. Of the larger charities, this is by far the best “returned percentage”, as most large charities keep forty five to sixty percent. When asked about the Corte Bella donations from Walk-AboutNight Red Kettle and the Angel Tree, Captain Mark Merritt of the SALVATION ARMY stated, “Each year the Red Kettle donations are totaled. This amount is divided by twelve and that amount becomes the monthly budget for the local Family Services. This pays for food, donation pickups, help for distressed people with emergency needs, such as rent and utilities, and to send selected local children to summer camps. Toys and money raised through the Angel Tree program go directly to the families who have children who would not have a Christmas without this program”. Mark also said, “All recipients of these gifts are fully vetted to verify their needs.” The Salvation Army Christmas Angel Tree is in
the Corte Bella Fitness Center until December 13th.

The weather was perfect for Miri to show us techniques for painting from real life – in this case, the large clay pot of flowers beside the social hall. The group practiced their art all day with a break for lunch at the Anacapa. Besides winning many prizes for her watercolors, Miri has taught drawing and painting at several studios and schools. She drew and painted for Disney Studios. Miri shared stories of the Disney animation world and showed us her newly illustrated children’s book. Ms. Weible’s father was the original animation artist for both Mickey and Minnie Mouse at Walt Disney Studios.
If you are interested in joining our group please contact DeborahDLazear@gmail.com for information. All skill levels welcome. We meet monthly to practice and for an instructor-led class.

Meet Your Neighbor, Pat Campbell Jan Bailey, Corte Bella Certified Personal Trainer Pat Campbell is a regular in the Body Challenge class (as well as other classes) and is such an inspiration. She originally hails from West Virginia, where she worked as a lab tech, met her husband and raised three children. She was married for forty-one years. Her daughter, Kay, lives here so she visited Arizona many times before finally deciding to make the move. Pat came to Corte Bella twelve years ago on a friend’s recommendation. She has lived in three different states and has visited Israel, France, Japan, Hong Kong, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and Spain. Besides her three children (two girls and a boy), she has seven grandchildren (two of whom live in Arizona) and two great grandchildren. Pat has always been active, and age hasn’t changed that. At 80 years of age, she’s still going strong. She takes seven classes at the Fitness Center each week which include Yoga, Pilates and Strength Training. When she’s not working out, her hobbies include reading, traveling and spending time with her family. Pat feels that her greatest accomplishment is raising great children. Her motto: “Keep a positive outlook and never stop moving!”

Exploring Northern Italy with Friends Robin Mandell A lot of people dream of seeing Italy: Tuscany, Rome, the Amalfi Coast - primarily southern Italy. Not many explore the northern part of the country - Milan and the alpine region. In October, sixteen Corte Bella friends set out for an Overseas Adventure Travel group tour entitled The Alps, Dolomites & Lombardy. Here are a few highlights: •
Sightseeing in Milan: the capital of Lombardy, including a tour of the Duomo, one of the world’s largest churches
•
Apperitivo time: Italian happy hour with a glass of wine and wonderful appetizers
•
Visiting three lovely large lakes: Como, Iseo, and Garda. Fall colors on the trees and beautiful blue skies.
•
A trip on the Bernina Red Train up into the Alps of Switzerland, 10,000 feet in altitude with some glacial snow and stunning scenery.
•
Discovering a winery that specializes in Franciacorta, a methode champenoise style wine that is much different than the usual Italian sparkler, prosecco. Lunch in the cave was delicious.
•
Spending an afternoon on a couple’s olive farm (see photo) and tasting their delicious olive oils.
•
Attending a cooking class, and enjoying the results.
•
Learning about the northern cities and towns like Trento and Bressanone that were part of Austria for centuries, with Tyrolean style architecture, heartier foods, and more German speakers.
•
Seeing “Otzi,” an incredibly well preserved 5,300 year-old iceman mummy discovered in 1991.
•
Enjoying the spectacular Dolomite mountains, including a walk up in the Val Gardena.
We have traveled several times now with Grand Circle Travel and Overseas Adventure Travel, which specialize in exploring places off the beaten tourist path. Our guide Lizzie made the trip; she was outstanding. We learned a lot and laughed every day. Good times!

Birds in Paradise (Part Two ) Jeanne and Nate Gowan Merry Christmas from the Cactus Wren! Arizona’s state bird, the Cactus Wren is a frequent visitor to Corte Bella. You might have heard their scratchy call or watched them hopping around the ground as they search for insects. They are one of the few birds that use their nests year-round, not just while breeding. This bird will retreat to its nest when the temperatures increase so you will rarely see them during the hottest part of the day. They seldom drink ground water, getting most of their water from the food they eat which includes mainly insects, so they are especially adaptive to desert living. You might think of the Cactus Wren as a pest controller on our golf course.
special place in Native American legends. Their distinctive X-shaped footprint, with two toes pointing forward and two pointing back, is used as a sacred symbol by Native Americans to prevent evil spirits. But in nature, roadrunners also provide a service by eating poisonous prey, including venomous lizards and scorpions. Working in pairs, they can also kill and eat rattlesnakes. Born to run, they can outrace a human using their long tails as rudders as they race at speeds up to 20 miles per hour.
The Greater Roadrunner forms a lifelong bond. The roadrunner pictured here is offering his mate a gecko, part of their elaborate courtship ritual that they renew each spring. This bird holds a

AARP Tax-Aide Needs Your Help Kim Abrew AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is a free program that makes it easier for older taxpayers to file their tax returns. Neighbors like you help prepare tax returns or serve in other ways, like organizing client paperwork, managing computer equipment, acting as interpreters, or making sure everything runs smoothly. We are the nation’s largest free, volunteer-run tax assistance and preparation program, which started in 1968 with just four volunteers at one site. Today, over 35,000 volunteers in all 50 states and the District of Columbia serve approximately 4,800 Tax-Aide sites from February 1 to mid-April. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers are trained and IRS-certified each year to ensure they know about and understand the latest changes and additions to the U.S. Tax Code. At our Sun City West location in the Sun City West Foundation building on the corner of RH Johnson and Stardust, we prepared over 2,300 returns with federal refunds of over $1.4M and approximately $794K in owed federal taxes. Over 2,000 of the
returns prepared, the primary taxpayer was age 65 or over. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is looking for compassionate, friendly people to join our team of volunteers for the upcoming tax season. Below is a brief description of the positions we have available: •
Greeter: Greets clients as they arrive. Ensures they are filling out required forms.
•
Pre-Counselor: Interviews clients and puts paperwork in order (like documents together).
•
Counselor: Reviews paperwork and inputs data into tax program, TaxSlayer.
•
Quality Review: Reviews information with client; ensures accuracy and e-files the return. If you are interested, you can contact us at scwtaxes@gmail.com or call Kim Abrew at 623-203-4213 or email her at gkabrew@cox.net. Training will begin in January 2020.

Tubac Arts Festival and Mission San Xavier del Bac November 2
Food and Wine Pairing Dinner Wines of California October 28
Fifty-five Corte Bella residents traveled to the south of Tucson to shop and dine in the historic town of Tubac at the Fall Arts and Crafts festival. The group then backtracked and had a docent tour of the beautiful Mission San Xavier del Bac, the White Dove of the Desert. It was a delightful and educational day trip spent with friends and neighbors.
The Anacapa was filled with more than fifty Corte Bella residents eager to learn about three small California wineries and to taste specially prepared dishes paired to selected wines. Each of the four courses served with lovely wines was exceptional. The evening was elegant and a testimony to what good food and wine can do to create a fine dining experience.
Verde Canyon Train Ride Trip November 9
Cooking with Chef Dan “Dishes to Warm You Up” November 1
On a lovely November morning, fifty-two Corte Bella residents traveled by bus to Clarkdale and boarded the historic Verde Canyon rail cars for a four hour round trip ride on the rails through the beautiful Verde Canyon. The trip showcased the Verde River, the fall colors of the cottonwood and aspen trees, amazing landscape, and the highlighted enjoyment of being out in the wilderness. Lots of good food and good drinks were enjoyed, along with pleasant companionship. It was a very good day.
Executive Chef Dan Haywood knocked it out of the park again with this culinary class. It was a standing room only class that learned new cooking tips & recipes, and tasted exceptional dishes. Each course was enjoyed by all and everyone finished the last dish feeling “very warm” indeed.
Jason Love Comedy Show November 1 As is the rule, this comedy show had everyone laughing and holding their sides. Jason, along with Dan Gabriel and Monique Marvez, was in top form for our show. This clean comedy is always a sold out show and is exceptional value for the buck.
