ASSOCIATION

Irony or Destiny? A short time ago, I was talking with one of our Corte Bella residents and we began discussing where we came from and how we both got to Corte Bella. As you know most, folks living in Corte Bella came from somewhere else. After some reflection, the conversation Mike Arrington, HOA General Manager made me consider my path to Corte Bella. I grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio until I joined the U.S. Air Force. My grandfather, whom I idolized, also made his home in Cincinnati until he retired and became one of the first homeowners in Sun City. He was a man of vision. After he and my grandmother moved to Sun City, I visited them several times. The first visit occurred when I was a young boy about the age of ten. I remember my grandmother taking me to her ceramics class, card games, the Bocce courts and the community pool to show me off to her friends in Sun City. I still remember them, as well as some of the Sun City staff I encountered. One of her friends was the original artist who drew Mickey Mouse. He took me into his home next door to them and showed me his original drawings. I was in awe of what Sun City was and had never experienced a place anything like it. Everything was bigger, better and they had everything. I remember laughing with my grandmother years later as a young man because I evidently told her that “I was going to live here someday” during my first visit to Sun City. My grandparents are now in their final resting place in the cemetery on Del Webb Boulevard and I visit them often since it is only about a mile from where I now reside. During those visits, I often reflect on how much I cared for them and those early memories of my visits as a youngster. Across the street is the

8 | CB Times | The Official Community Magazine of Corte Bella

golf course that I played on with my grandfather which I can see from the cemetery. My father sometimes visits me today from Cincinnati and I take him to visit his parents’ resting place. Each time, it is a feeling I cannot describe. To be able to do that for him and to be there with him is something special. My mom and dad divorced about forty years ago and she moved to Scottsdale where she lived until she passed just last year. I had visited her often during my adult life and fell in love with Arizona during those visits. My career path began in the Air Force and more education lead me to a career as a civilian rocket engineer, working on the nation’s space program. I worked on the space shuttle program and then on the Titan Rocket program for a short time where I was involved in an accident that took the life of a friend that was standing next to me and placed me in the Sherman Oaks Burn Center for a while. After that, I got out of the space industry and finally moved to Arizona to be near my mom and start a new career. Then having three kids of my own, I wanted to do something safer. Yes, I chose the community management industry or, did it choose me? To this day, I’m still not sure which was safer. Of course, I kid. After twenty six years in the industry to include running management companies and managing hundreds of HOA’s, I ended up in what I consider to be the most special and desirable community in Sun City area. There would be no Corte Bella without the original Del Webb Sun City. I’ll be sixty next year and my first visit to Sun City was nearly fifty years ago. Although many stops in between, I sometimes feel like my life has come full circle. So I ask “Irony or destiny?” The one thing I am certain of is that I am happy, proud and privileged to be where I am and live to serve Corte Bella each and every day. Everyone should be so lucky and blessed. I am grateful and will never take it for granted. In fact, I make an effort to say hello and introduce myself to your grandchildren when I see them visiting you. I know how proud you are of them.

Board Talk Happy New Year to everyone! We missed the New Year’s Eve event but I‘m told that our Lifestyle Manager, Pam Lawrence and her team of volunteers and staff did an outstanding job with the decorations, theme and music. Executive Chef Dan Haywood, Food and Beverage Manager Jill Machay and the entire Anacapa Michael McVeigh, CBCCA HOA Board President

team made the special evening an event to remember for all attendees. Our Food and Beverage team provided our guests with outstanding food, service and entertainment throughout the evening. Many photos of the event have already appeared on social media and our website. The smiles and the formal dress attire tell a wonderful story about the event. It’s always nice to see that we can ring in the New Year in style and it all happened without leaving Corte Bella. A special thanks to the entire staff for giving up their New Year’s evening for us. The Corte Bella Board of Director Elections is fast approaching. The deadline for candidate submissions was January 14th. There are four (4) vacancies to fill and we are hoping to have several qualified and talented applicants. I know you are out there. Thanks to each of you for your willingness to serve our beautiful community. Meet and greet nights have already taken place on January 22nd and 24th. We hope everyone had an opportunity to meet the candidates and ask them important questions about their interest in serving on our Board. The election results will be announced at the annual membership meeting on March 4th. Board Committee Liaison’s or Committee

The smiles and the formal dress attire tell a wonderful story about the event. It’s always nice to see that we can ring in the New Year in style and it all happened without leaving Corte Bella.

Chairs will each make brief presentations on 2018 results and 2019 goals at this important meeting. We’ll also share the final 2018 financial results. In 2018, we had over 130 new residents move into Corte Bella. We hope you will attend this annual meeting and get to know who the fantastic volunteers are and what projects they are doing on our behalf. We are in the final planning stages of the annual membership meeting agenda. If anyone has a specific item they would like to see on the agenda, please let us know. This is your meeting! Of course, we’ll have an open forum but some resident questions may require research prior to the meeting. PLEASE, DON’T FORGET TO VOTE! Your Board recommends a “YES” vote for the Reserve Fund Fee percentage increase so future Boards can address the Capital Improvement challenges in Corte Bella without any increases to current assessments. Help us help you – vote yes on this important issue. The next Board workshop will be held Friday, February 15th at 9:00 a.m. and the next Open Board meeting is on Wednesday, February 20th at 10:00 a.m. All residents are welcome and encouraged to attend. Your thoughts, opinions, and concerns are very important to me as your Board President. Contact me, anytime, at mmcveigh3@cox.net or 623-433-9921. I hope that 2018 was a successful year for you and your family. Here’s to a happy and healthy 2019 for you and yours!

From the Editor’s Desk Linda Wright The CB Times is your community publication – for and about the residents of this wonderful community. As editor (a voluntary position), I welcome and actively solicit input from you, our readers. Please know that contributions from you regarding an interest group or club that you’re involved with here in Corte Bella are most welcomed. Send me your ideas, articles, photos, and such to my email at trgibe@aol.com. I’m not the only volunteer working on this publication. I’m blessed to have a team of proofreaders that help me make sure the

magazine is worth a read. If you’re interested in helping in this area, please email me. Our magazine is professionally handled as far as layout design and printing but all other aspects are purely volunteer. It’s such a team effort from start to finish and I’m delighted to be a part of this effort to bring to you each month something of value and substance. Thank you to all of you who regularly send me articles and information for each issue. Corte Bella is so fortunate to have many such involved and caring residents.

Wine & Food: Uncorked Deborah Damery Lazear, CSW And we thought the party season was over for another year in Corte Bella. Not so fast! February is the month for love and what greater expression is there than the love of wine, food, and sharing with friends. This month we will focus on the spicy side of life: cooking spices that is.

Use this list to approach spice from either the wine or the spice/herb side: •

Sauvignon Blanc and chives, tarragon, dill, fennel, cardamom or cilantro

Chardonnay (lightly oaked) and sesame or basil

Viognier (Chenin Blanc) and saffron or curry

Riesling (dry) and rosemary, ginger or cinnamon

Pinot Noir and nutmeg, clove, star anise or cinnamon

Syrah (Rhône Valley) and oregano, sage or white pepper

Shiraz (Australia) and black pepper

Tempranillo (Spain) and smoked, dry chiles

Grenache and cloves

Rioja (Spain) and cinnamon

Merlot and mint, juniper berry or rosemary

Cabernet Sauvignon and rosemary, lavender, juniper or anise

Zinfandel and black pepper or nutmeg

This month’s commonly asked cooking questions: Which wines pair with the acid in salad dressing or lemon sauces?

of mine is Muscadet Sèvre et Maine; a well-priced white with the acidity to be a great dance partner to your dish. Wines lower in acid, such as warm climate Chardonnay or a Gewürztraminer, will appear flat or flabby; the opposite of refreshing. Avoid oak. One of my dinner guests doesn’t consume alcohol. Will it burn off in cooking? Not completely. Even after a long braise, there will be 2% to 5% of the alcohol remaining. Tip: Deglaze your baking dish or prepare your sauce with stock. Set aside enough for your guest, then add wine to the rest of the sauce ensuring you bring it up to a strong simmer to reduce any harshness. I love to cook with garlic. Doesn’t it fight with the wine? Raw garlic can really take over and makes the wine take a back seat. Counter this by soaking minced raw garlic in lemon juice for 15 minutes. The sharpness of the garlic will be mellowed. Another approach is to roast the whole garlic bud wrapped in foil. Squeeze out the softened cloves and purée into the sauce. You can sauté whole cloves of peeled garlic in olive oil, butter or a combination of both. When lightly toasted, about 1 minute, you can mash into a paste to incorporate into your dish. Be very careful not to allow the garlic to burn. It becomes bitter and ruins the dish. Hint: if your garlic cloves have a green shoot, remove that completely before using to avoid a harsh, bitter taste.

Wine of the Month: Sauvignon Blanc; pairs well with •

Salads

Artichokes

Goat cheese

Asparagus

Pasta primavera

Balsamic vinaigrette

Roasted Brussels sprouts

Valentine’s Day is often commemorated with a gift of chocolate. To be on the safe side, go for a wine that tastes sweeter than the chocolate. Cabernet Sauvignon with a hearty oak presence will pair with 70% cacao bars. Try a light Italian Brachetto with strawberries dipped in dark chocolate. Scharffen Berger Milk Chocolate and Ice Wine is a real treat. The French swear by Banyuls, a sweet fortified wine made from Grenache grapes. Pair it with dark chocolate.

Look for wines that have a matching level of acidity. Begin by searching out wines from cooler regions such as the Loire Valley, Alsace, Germany, and the Carneros region of California. A favorite

commITTEES

Corte Bella Looks to the Future David Wright, Chairman, Long-Term Planning Committee Corte Bella competes with all other retirement communities in the Northwest Valley to attract residents. Amenities are a core issue with many buyers. Having top notch facilities will draw more buyers and should contribute to higher home values. Corte Bella is a 14-year old community. There have not been any consequential capital upgrades in that timeframe. In 2010, Corte Bella chartered a Strategic Planning Committee and shortly thereafter a Capital Improvement Committee to look into improving our amenities. Both committees were disbanded before they could complete their work. In 2014, the Board chartered the current Long-Term Planning Committee (LTPC) and work began anew towards developing a long-term plan. That work culminated in Corte Bella’s first long-term capital improvement plan which the LTPC presented to the Board at its December 2018 workshop and which the Board unanimously approved at its December 2018 open meeting. This represents a major step forward towards maintaining and enhancing Corte Bella’s aging amenities and maintaining home values. The plan calls for enhancing/expanding the Anacapa Restaurant, the Social Hall, the Fitness Center, the HOA Offices, sports courts, maintenance facilities and creating new office spaces and a multi-purpose conference room – all without significantly altering the current Santa Barbara look or the current building footprints. It also provides software tools for forecasting, prioritizing and tracking capital projects which will be spread out over several years. At the moment, these projects are broad stroke “concepts,” designed to meet current and future community needs. They lack specific detail which will be filled in as funding becomes available and as the Buildings and Grounds Committee and HOA management develop actual construction plans.

Directly or indirectly, every Corte Bella resident will benefit from these capital improvements. More people will be able to attend popular HOA events, the expanded Social Hall will be able to support multiple club/group functions simultaneously, the Fitness Center will be less crowded, the Anacapa will have an expanded kitchen and storage facilities to better serve its growing clientele, HOA management and staff will have proper offices in which to conduct business, maintenance facilities will be adequate and allow for proper storage of hazardous materials and the sports courts will make maximum use of available land to better support community athletes. And the beauty of the plan, as presented and approved, is that it will not cost home-owners anything.

All capital improvement projects are funded by the Capital Improvement Fund which is an account within the community Reserve Fund. At present, the account is financed solely from the Reserve Fund Fee which is charged to buyers as a closing cost item when they purchase a home in Corte Bella. That fee, (currently set at 50% of the annual home-owner assessment, or $923) is specified by the Corte Bella Country Club Association Covenants, Conditions & Restrictions, more familiarly known as the CC&Rs. In essence, capital improvements are paid for by new home-owners and can be considered the new home-owner’s contribution to maintaining the community’s relevance and its home values. We all paid this fee when we bought our current homes in Corte Bella. The Finance Committee is currently working hard to identify new sources of revenue to grow the Capital Improvement Fund at a quicker pace and thereby accelerate the plan’s implementation. If you missed the December Board of Directors workshop and/or open meeting, you can check out the presentation on the Corte Bella website (under the Long Term Planning Committee folder, under the sub-menu for Committees and Groups folder in the Resource Center.)

Golf Cart Safety Robin Mandell It was observed over the Thanksgiving and Christmas vacations that kids, meaning anyone under the age of 18, were at the wheel of golf carts around the Corte Bella neighborhood. That is not advised. I have been a volunteer instructor of the AARP Safe Driver course for eleven years - it is one of my retirement projects. What I have learned while teaching this course: Golf carts are licensed motor vehicles; they require a licensed driver at the wheel. Golf carts can be on roads that have a speed limit of 35 MPH or below (i.e. within Corte Bella and Sun City West). They are

forbidden on roads with a speed limit of 40 MPH or above (Deer Valley Road, Bell Road, Grand Ave.) I’ve heard many stories over my years in AARP classes about individuals in local 55+ communities (Sun City, Sun City Grand) that have had devastating experiences with young people driving golf carts. If there is an accident or crash, insurance will not cover the damages because under-age drivers are not covered. Sometimes, it is a great expense. Guess who usually pays for the damages - the grandparents. Golf carts are not a toy or an amusement car ride. PLEASE do not have your unlicensed grandkids/relatives drive around the community during the upcoming spring break -- or at any time!

Tree Health on Your Property Shirley Williams, Corte Bella resident On my frequent walks around Corte Bella, I have noticed a variety of ways trees in my neighbors’ yards have been trimmed. I’ve recently become a Master Gardener and am becoming more aware of the damage that can be done to a tree if not properly pruned. Why should you care about the trees on your personal property?

you want the tree trimmed. There are plenty of websites that give you proper pruning techniques. Go to extension.Arizona.edu/ MaricopaMG for publications and see pubulication AZ1139. Help keep Corte Bella beautiful and safe with proper care of the trees on your property.

Cost: The tree cost of topping is often hidden—-lower property values, expense of removal and replacement if the tree dies or is damaged by the wind. Ugliness: A topped tree is disfigured and provides no esthetic benefit or functional benefit. Starvation: Topping a tree removes so much of the tree’s leafy crown that it dangerously reduces the tree’s food-making ability. Shock: By removing the tree’s canopy, the bark tissue is exposed to the sun and scalding can cause tree death. Insects and disease: The exposed ends of topped limbs are highly vulnerable to insect invasion or decay from fungi spores. Weak Limbs: New branches that grow from stubbed limbs are weakly attached and more liable to break. Rapid new growth: Instead of controlling the height and spread of the tree, topping has the opposite effect. New branches are more numerous and grow higher than before. Tree death: Some tree species cannot tolerate major branch loss. So as you can see in the illustration at the right, the properly pruned tree is growing slower and less dense. Thus, it is more beautiful with its size controlled and is safer and healthier. You also do not get extra sprouts at the base of the tree. An arborist is your best option for pruning your tree on your property. Another option is to talk to your landscaper about how

Corte Bella Vets News Karen Starkman Happy New Year from the Corte Bella Vets! The Corte Bella Vets wish everyone a happy, safe, and healthy 2019! To start off the New Year, we remind you of our Fifth Annual Charity Golf Tournament at the Corte Bella Golf Club on Sunday, February 24th. This year’s golf tournament’s purpose is to support efforts that combat veteran homelessness in the Phoenix area. Proceeds from the tournament will support Catholic Charities’ MANA (Marines, Army, Navy, Airforce) House, Veteran’s First LTD’s Mary Ellen’s Place, and Project Veterans Pride’s James Walton Home. You can Register for the Golf Tournament at https://birdeasepro. com/cortebellavetscharitygolf/. Don’t forget our Silent Auction items will be available for viewing and bidding from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Saturday, February 23rd and Sunday, February 24th from 12:00 Noon until 8:00 PM. Auction Items will be on display in the white tents located in the Anacapa breezeway. You’re welcome to bid on any item (s) on display. Thank you all for your support with our Honey Baked Ham fundraiser and Sundome Plaza Merchants Angel Trees for Veterans Program. As you may be aware, 2018 was the first year in which the Corte Bella Vets managed this initiative and it was a huge success. Four times the number of gifts were distributed to Mary Ellen’s Place than in past years and hundreds of gifts were delivered to the Veteran’s Community Center in Phoenix and the Prescott AZ VA Home.

Our first evening meeting of the New Year was a huge success. Many thanks to everyone who came on January 9th, to listen to Rosie the Riveters, and their direct decedents, who shared their WWII experiences. Upcoming events include on Tuesday morning, February 12th at 9:00 AM when Ken Salmon representing the the Pat Tillman Foundation will be our guest speaker and on Wednesday evening, April 10th at 6:00 PM our very own Tommy Crawford retired USAF Brigadier General will be our guest speaker. Note that we will not have a guest speaker in March. Additional guest speakers will be announced in future CB Times articles. Remember that all meetings are open to the entire Community and are held in the Social Hall. Save the date: Saturday, April 6th from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM for a Dance and Comedy Fundraiser with DJ Keith Fowler and Stand-up Comedian Jon Wendt. All proceeds from this event will go towards fighting and preventing veteran homelessness within the Northwest Valley.

There are two types of lantana – ground and bush; choose wisely. Trim lantana to 12” rounds close to the third week of February. Fertilize shrubs with granules (the only time this year); water immediately. Fertilize palms with granules placed by water emitters for the first time this year. Fertilize citrus in pots with extra nitrogen for the first time this year. Prune citrus before new growth. Do not feed new landscape transplants during the first year of their growth. Prune trees mid-February. Plant drought-resistant succulents, trees, shrubs and grasses.

Fertilize roses if new growth is 4” long. If not, wait. Amend soil 16-20-0, mid month. Add coffee grounds, gypsum, and nitrogen to soil mix; turn soil to 12” – 18” deep. Place osmocote granules in pots. Cut grasses to 12”. Cut back to ground every 1-3 years. Move emitters out to drip lines of trees. Adjust tree ties. You should have some “play” to encourage growth of roots to support trees when the wind blows. Sow seeds swiss chard, turnips, onions, peas, kale, cauliflower. Add fish emulsion to vegetable bed soil.

Friends of Italy Club Keith Fowler The Friends of Italy Club kicked off their 11th Season of dinner/ dance events on December 14th. Chef Dan Haywood and his staff provided a fabulous dinner along with Jill Machay and her staff providing attentive table and bar service. The sell-out crowd danced the night away to the wonderful music provided by D.J. Smith and The Midnight Sun Band. What a great night! By this time you read this, the January 18th Friends of Italy dinner/dance will be history, but don’t wait to get on the list for the February 22nd and March 29th events!

February 22nd will be a Valentine tribute event, so bring your special someone and enjoy the music provided by Rich Mancini, DJ; a special dinner menu created just for this event and some wonderful new wines for our event as well. Then on March 29th, our final party for this season, we’ll have The Faded Jeans Band to entertain and we want all our guests to wear their faded jeans and one of our newly offered Friends of Italy Polo or T-shirts (available for purchase.) The Friends of Italy (FOI) Club is a social/dining club that has gatherings in the Corte Bella Social Hall four to five times during the year. To secure your place on future email announcements, please contact Event Coordinator, Keith Fowler, at FOI_Keith @msn.com. EAT, DRINK, ENJOY” with the “Friends of Italy” Club!

Corte Bella Adventure Group Steve Downing New Year’s morning brought an untypical frigid hike to our schedule. Nothing that a coat, gloves and warm hat couldn’t mitigate. None of our small group seemed any worse for the wear being the morning after New Year’s Eve. I’m thinking we just don’t party the same as back in the day. We did keep this hike close, in the Peoria Sunrise Mountain Preserve, so we could make it back by bowl time. The trailhead parking for this hike is at Westwing Neighborhood Park, which is north on Lake Pleasant Boulevard, followed by a right turn on

Westwing Parkway. Trail length is four to five miles, depending on which trails you decide to follow. The advantage of this hike is the great workout and short driving time from Corte Bella. The trail can, however, be crowded with good weather. February 19th will be our annual Full Moon Hike in Deem Hills. With a cloudless night, the light of the moon is bright enough to hike the loop trail and climb up the Ridgeline Trail. Yes, you may bring a flashlight, but I would encourage you to try it without. You will be surprised by the trail definition and moon shadows. From the top of the Ridgeline Trail we will have a nice view out over the valley and the nighttime lighting.

The Hardy Bunch Can you guess who are the Canadians?

Smiling Out Loud Celebrates and Donates Linda Wright, SOuL member Smiling Out Loud (SOuL), the Corte Bella Ladies Charity Support Organization, celebrated the Christmas season at their December meeting with a potluck lunch and a visit from Santa Claus. The ladies also brought children’s toys to donate to the Salvation Army’s Forgotten Angel toy drive (to help with fulfilling the Christmas Angel tags that were not returned or that were never picked up throughout the northwest valley.)

SOuL also donated $2,000 to the Thompson Ranch Elementary School to help support the more than 33 teachers at the school (with a student population of 900 children) with their supply needs. The check was presented by SOuL President, Carla Smith to Dr. Rachel Thompson, Principal, and Assistant Principal, Casey Kuhn. The donation was described as “Santa came early this year.” by Dr. Saunders. The Valley View Food Bank also received a donation of $3,000 from SOuL to assist in their efforts to serve those in need in the west valley. SOuL is committed to helping our community at large. A number of our members assisted with the recent children’s Christmas party at Eve’s Place, a support center for victims of domestic abuse. SOuL invites any interested ladies of Corte Bella to attend our monthly meetings held on the third Thursdays of each month at 10:30 AM in the Bella Stanza room of the community social hall. We’d love to have you join our group.

The Streets of Corte Bella

A Guide to Our Confusing Maze of Roadways David Wright The following article is edited and reprinted from the January 2010 issue of the CB Times. “The Streets of . . .” Boy, does that phrase take me back! How many remember the Bruce Springsteen hit “The Streets of Philadelphia,” or that television series “The Streets of San Francisco,” starring an already established Karl Malden and a young up-and-comer named Michael Douglas? So why doesn’t someone do an article on – yes, you guessed it – “The Streets of Corte Bella?” Well, someone just did, and here it is. I happen to live on one of the two “West Rincón” Drives in Corte Bella. Unfortunately, the one I live on does not yet appear in MapQuest, Google, or probably any but the most recently distributed GPS programs. I’m sure that in time it will be found in all mapping software. In the meantime, however, I am obliged to use another address (I use the Board president’s address just because I can), to trick these computer programs into giving me driving directions to anywhere from my house. (Hey, we all have to exit the community either onto Deer Valley Road or onto El Mirage Road; I can manage to get to both gates without computer mapping software.) Another issue I have with my “home” street is its pronunciation or, more to the point, the variations on the correct pronunciation. The most popular variation has “Rincón” rhyming with “Lincoln,” as in Honest Abe, our 16th president – a great tribute, but an inaccurate pronunciation of my humble street’s name. That little annoyance got me wondering about other street names in Corte Bella. So I wrote them all down and was amazed when I read the final list of 59 streets, none of which, by the way, have the word “street” appended to their names. We have Lanes, Courts, Drives and even one Avenue, but no Streets in Corte Bella. For goodness sakes – I mean, really – have you ever wondered what those good people at Pulte Homes (or Maricopa County, for all I know) were smoking and/or drinking when they handed out the street names in this community? And, even stranger, what possibly motivated them to use the same name for more than one street? And why did they chose some of the less well-known Spanish words when they could just as easily have saved us all a lot of grief by using the names of trees, states, animals, or just about anything else that might have more easily rolled off the tongues of the Englishspeaking majority of residents here? I have wondered about it, and I still do. (I know, I should really look into therapy at some point.) So I did a little research that I’d like to share with you.

Before I begin, however, permit me a quick word about my transliteration scheme. I know that it is not one of the schemes widely recognized by my more erudite and professional linguistic brethren. Its saving grace is that it does not use diacritical marks and, more importantly, most people understand it without a long, footnoted explanation. All consonants have the same sounds as they have in Standard English. The stressed syllables are highlighted with bold CAPITAL LETTERS. Here are the vowel sounds. Vowel Sound Pronunciation Guide ah: as ‘a’ in “father” ay: as ‘ay’ in “day” eh: as ‘e’ in “rest” ee: as ‘ee’ in “beet” ih: as ‘i’ in “gift” oh: as ‘o’ in “hole” oo” as ‘oo’ in “moon” uh” as ‘u’ in “cut” And that’s as technical as we’re going to get. So, without further ado, let’s explore The Streets of Corte Bella. • Anapama (ah nuh PAH muh) So why not start out with a Spanish acronym? This beauty stands for Alianza Nacional de Asociaciones de Padres y Maestros de Puerto Rico, or the Puerto Rican National Alliance of Parents and Teachers Associations. • Arrellaga (uh reh YAH guh) This is possibly a reference to José Joaquín de Arrillaga who was the Spanish governor of Alta California, 1804 to 1814. • Cabrillo (kuh BREE yoh) Probably named for Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, the Spanish conquistador who, in 1542, discovered “. . .a very good enclosed port” that today we know as San Diego Bay. Etymologically speaking, the word means little goat. • Caleta (kuh LEH tuh) Portuguese for narrow bay between rocks. • Calle Real (KAH yuh reh YAHL) Spanish for royal road, the one built for kings and queens. • Cárdenas (CAR deh nuhs) Possibly named after Lázaro Cárdenas, who was the president of Mexico from 1934 to 1940. He outlawed capital punishment and nationalized the Mexican oil industry (March 18, 1938). • Carrera (kuh REH ruh) Spanish for race (any kind of sporting race). • Chapala (chuh PAH luh) This is the name of the largest lake in Mexico, located in Jalisco state. In 1521, Franciscan evangelists baptized Chief Chapalac and named him “Martín de Chapala,” master of the people and owner of the land.

28 | CB Times | The Official Community Magazine of Corte Bella

In exchange, the Toltec Indian chief destroyed his god, Izlacateotl. In Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs, Chapala means grasshoppers over the water. • Corte Bella (KOHR tuh BEHL luh) Corte means cut or style and Bella means beautiful, combined – beautiful style. • De La Guerra (day luh GEHR ruh) Spanish for pertaining to war, or it can be used as an adjective simply meaning war. • Del Monte (dehl MOHN teh) Spanish for of the mountain, belonging to the mountain, near the mountain, or simply the adjective mountain, as in mountain spring. • El Sueño (ehl SWEH nyoh) Spanish for the dream, or what we’re all living here in Corte Bella. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist that last bit.) • Figueroa (fih geh ROH uh) My best guess is that this one refers to General José Figueroa, who was the Spanish governor of Alta California, 1833 to 1835. • Galicia (guh LEE thee uh) (NB: the “th” in the third syllable is pronounced as “th” in theater.) The New World Spanish pronunciation is “guh LEE see uh.” Galicia is the northwestern province of Spain. The name itself comes from the Latin Gallecia, associated with the name of the ancient Celtic tribe that resided about the Duoro River. • Gaviota (gah VYO tuh) Spanish for seagull. • Giovota (gee uh VOH tuh) I cannot find a single trace to the origin of this word except for a style of granite. • Hank Raymond Possibly named in honor of an Arizona rancher who was prominent in state politics. • Junípero (who NEE peh roh) Spanish for juniper tree. • Las Alturas (lahs ahl TOO ruhs) Spanish for the heights. • La Mérida (lah MEH rih duh) From the Latin, emerita, pertaining to one who has merit. The city of Mérida, in Extremadura, Spain, was originally named Emerita Augusta for the bachelors (discharged soldiers) of Roman Emperor Augustus’ army, in 25 B.C. • Las Positas (lahs poh SEE tus) Spanish for small lands, in can also mean small wells since ‘s’ and ‘z’ are interchangeable in spoken New World Spanish. • La Viña (lah VEE nyuh) Spanish for the vine. • Los Bancos (lohs BAHN kohs) Spanish for the benches, or banks. • Los Gatos (lohs GAH tohs) Spanish for the cats. • Micheltorena (mih shehl tuh REH nuh) Manuel Micheltorena was a Brigadier General in the Mexican Army, AdjutantGeneral of the same, Governor, Commandant-General and Inspector of the Department of California from 1842 until 1845. He was instrumental in the privatization of California land. Etymologically speaking, Michel is a French derivative of Michael, which is a Hebrew name meaning one who resembles God and torena is derived from the Spanish word torre, which means tower. Put them together and you get Michael’s Tower or the tower of the one who resembles God.

• Mission (MIH shuhn) This is the English pronunciation and spelling of the Spanish word misión. It most likely refers to the religious missions that the Spanish established throughout the southwest United States. • Montecito (mohn teh SEE toh) Ironically, this diminutive for hill or little mountain is the only avenue in Corte Bella. • Nogales (noh GAH lehs) Spanish for walnut (or hickory) tree. • Padaro (puh DAH roh) Here’s another word whose meaning I cannot find on the Internet or in the recesses of my memory, although there are a lot of restaurants and resorts in California that bear the name Padaro. • Panchita (pahn CHEE tuh) Spanish for little feather; also an endearing nickname for Francesca. • Pedgregosa (peh dreh GOH suh) Spanish for rocky or stony. • Pico (PEE koh) Spanish for peak or (mountain) summit. • Quinto (KEEN toh) The Spanish ordinal number fifth. • Ridgely A surname of English origin. • Rincón (rihn KOHN) Spanish for (inside) corner or a nook. (For the curious, esquina (eh SKEE nuh) is the Spanish for an outside corner.) • San Pablo (sahn PAHB loh) St. Paul, the prolific epistemologist of the early Christian Church. • San Ramón (sahn ruh MOHN) St. Raymond is the patron saint of midwives and expectant mothers – a rather odd selection for a 55-plus community. (St. Raymond is so designated this particular patron saint because his mother died giving birth to him.) • Santa Ynez (SAHN tuh ih NESS) St. Inez, born near Valencia, Spain, was noted for her prophecies. She joined the Augustinian order of sisters. • Sola (SOH luh) Spanish for lone, single or solitary; also a species of shrub. • Sol Mar (sohl MAHR) Two Spanish words meaning sun and sea, respectively. • Sonora (suh NOH ruh) Derived from the Opata (Uto-Aztecan) language word xunuta, meaning “place of corn.” It is also the name of the desert in which most of southern Arizona and norther Mexico are located; the exclusive habitat of the saguaro cactus. • Valerio (vuh LEH ree oh) A first name derived from the Latin word valere, meaning to be of worth, to have worth. • Via Vistosa (VEE uh vihs TOH suh) Spanish for showy or colorful street. • Vista Bahía (VIHS tuh buh EE uh) Spanish for bayview. If you were counting, you would have come up with less than 59 streets. That is because several of the names are applied indiscriminately to Drives, Courts, and Lanes.

Friends of Italy Dinner Dance December 14 This active interest group, one of Corte Bella’s largest, hosted a dinner dance for a sell out crowd. Master of Ceremonies, Keith Fowler, and his team did a wonderful job of keeping the evening moving along. Executive Chef Dan Haywood and the Anacapa kitchen prepared a delicious Italian fest for all who attended. The dance floor was moving and shaking to the music of the live band.

Christmas Eve at the Anacapa

New Year’s Eve Extravaganza

December 24

December 31

Once again, as in every Christmas, the Anacapa put on an amazing Christmas feast for its residents and their guests on Christmas Eve. There was something for every taste in the buffet, and the ambiance and attention to detail truly provided a special way to celebrate the evening before Christmas.

The final event of the year was something to remember. The décor, the excellent four course meal provided by the Anacapa, the music from the guest DJ, and the wonderful touches like champagne bubble bottles and party favors made this so very enjoyable. The attendees in their wonderful formal dress really showcased this special party. Corte Bella knows how to throw an end of the year party! This is the way to ring in the new year.

HEALTH & FITNESS

Corte Bella Tennis Club News Marylee Planer Nearly forty members of the Corte Bella Tennis Club (CBTC), spouses and guests gathered for food, fellowship and holiday fun at the home of board member MaryLee Planer in December. In addition to the usual array of mouth-watering appetizers, main and side dishes, desserts and beverages, many in attendance competed in a best Christmas accessory contest. The contest winners were determined by vote. Although there were rumors that someone (Rick Gratian was suspected but never formally accused) stuffed the ballot box, three winners were declared — Joel Piaskowski, Carole Peterson and MaryLee Planer — and prizes were awarded. The CBTC always welcomes new members. Our numbers are such that players can get to know each other well through exercise and fellowship. Dues are just $15 annually. More information can be found on the court-side bulletin board.

Corte Bella Golf Club News Debbie Parks Dube January of this year started with a big list of rules changes for the game of golf. Here is a list put out by the USGA for the “Twenty Must-Know Rules of Golf” for 2019: •

Drop from knee height NOT shoulder height.

Measure the area to drop in with the longest club in your bag (except for a putter).

Drop in and play from the relief area.

When dropping back–on-the-line, your ball cannot be played from nearer the hole than your chosen reference point.

Time to search - 3 Minutes (NOT 5 minutes).

If you accidently move your ball when searching for it, replace it without penalty.

No penalty for a double hit - it only counts as one stroke.

No penalty if your ball hits you or your equipment accidently after a stroke.

No penalty if your ball strikes the flagstick when you have chosen to leave it in the hole.

Spike mark and other shoe damage on the putting green can be repaired.

Ball accidently moved on the putting green - no penalty and replace.

Ball marked, lifted and replaced on putting green is moved by the wind to another position - replace ball on the original spot.

Penalty areas replace water hazards, and you can move loose impediments, ground your club and take practice swings in penalty areas without penalty, just as you can on the fairway or in the rough.

You can’t take relief from a penalty area unless you are at least 95% certain your ball is in the penalty area.

In bunkers, you can move loose impediments.

In bunkers, you cannot touch the sand with your club in the area right in front of or right behind your ball during your backswing or in taking practice swings.

Free relief is allowed if your ball is embedded on the fairway or in the rough (but “embedded” means that part of the ball is below the level of the ground.)

Unplayable ball in bunker - extra option to drop outside the bunker for 2 penalty strokes.

You cannot have your caddie or your partner standing behind you once you begin taking your stance.

Pace of Play - It is recommended that you take no longer than 40 seconds to make a stroke (and usually you should be able to play more quickly than that) and Ready Golf in stroke play is encouraged.

Thank you and, as always, Corte Bella residents are welcome to join us for lunch seven days a week and breakfast on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Come on by if you are interested in membership options!

Pickleball News Robin Mandell

New year, new record: Current membership is 232! Strolling by the Pickleball courts at the end of December, there were a few fire trucks in the parking lot. Hope no one got hurt. But wait, on the courts there were a lot of young people playing: men and women, strong and fit. Do they live in Corte Bella? No, they were the Club’s invited guests for the day: our wonderful firemen, firewomen, and medics from Arizona Fire & Medical Station #103; right on the corner of Deer Valley & 135th. It was the pleasure of several of our Club members to teach our neighbors the game, and they were good (see photo).

Pickleball season is now in high gear: •

Member play for all levels is every morning from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM .

Lady Pickleball Players - Monday and Thursday from12:30 PM to 3:00 PM

Open play is Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings starting at 6:00 PM

Numerous tournaments are taking place around the area: check out www.pickleballtournaments.com
