ASSOCIATION

Important Information for the Corte Bella Community As we all enter another new year and move into 2019, I‘d like to take the time to provide a bird’s eye view of where the community is headed and some of the things on the agenda. First, there are four openings on the Board of Directors that you, as a lot owner, will be asked to vote on. The Mike Arrington, General Manager final day to throw your hat in the ring as a candidate is very near at this point and the list of candidates will be announced shortly. Of course, you will then receive notice of the Annual Meeting to be conducted on March 4th and ballots for voting. We will be offering electronic on-line voting options this year and paper ballots as we have in the past. You will have the option of voting either of these two ways, but not both. If you want to vote electronically on-line, make sure you have a current email address on record at the HOA so you can register with the on-line voting company. Paper ballots will be mailed to you with the details and voting instructions for both methods of voting. This year, there will be two separate ballots mailed to you and available on-line for you to cast your vote. The first ballot will be a two issue, “Secret” ballot meaning no one will know how you voted. That ballot will ask you to vote for four (4) Director candidates to fill the Director openings. That first ballot will also ask you to vote on the 70-604 Revenue Ruling as you have in years past. This ballot will close just prior to the Annual Meeting and the results for both questions will be announced at that Annual Meeting as in past years. The second ballot will be included in the same mailing to you and available on-line as well. The second ballot will not be a secret ballot and will remain open

past the Annual Meeting for about 90 days from the time voting opens since it requires so many votes to pass. This ballot will be provided so you can vote on whether or not to change one single sentence in the CCR’s. This change requires that at least 826 lots to vote “Yes” in order to pass. A non-vote is a “No” vote. If this change passes, the fund that is currently used to pay for improvements to Corte Bella and its amenities will grow at an increased rate each time a house is sold in the community by increasing the amount allowed to be collected by Corte Bella at

The current Board of Directors proposed this change and strongly encourages you to vote “Yes” on this change to the governing documents.

the time each such transaction takes place. If you are not selling or buying a home, you are not affected in any way by this change except that the community you reside in will have more dollars to use for improving the community which will help bolster your personal property value. The current Board of Directors proposed this change and strongly encourages you to vote “Yes” on this change to the governing documents. All communities have this fee in one form or another and currently, Corte Bella’s version is one of the lowest. The current amount of this fee was established over 15 years ago by the developer and has never changed. In the long term, this fee will help to keep your annual assessment dues as low as possible. Vote “Yes” on the “Reserve Fee CCR change.” I wish you all the best in 2019 and look forward to a great year serving the community.

Board Talk We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and a joyous New Year’s Eve celebration. I wish everyone a happy and prosperous 2019. As I wind down on my fifth year as a Director and the third year as your board president, I’m hoping that the 2019 elections will bring us four new board directors that will continue to move our beautiful Michael McVeigh, HOA Board of Directors President

community forward in a positive and meaningful way. We have four directors finishing out unexpired terms and I can’t begin to thank them for the contributions they have made. They were selected among thirteen candidates last year and we hope to see continued interest by them in serving our community again. By the time you read this, our “Call for Candidates” will be out and the last date that “Nominations for Directors” will be accepted is Monday, January 14, 2019. If anyone has any interest in considering a board position this year, now is the time to stand up and be counted. “Meet and Greet the Candidate Nights” are planned for January 22 and January 24 at 6:00 P.M. in the social hall. I would be happy to meet with and discuss duties and responsibilities on the board with anyone who is interested. All election ballots are due at the Association office not later than 12:00 P.M. on March 4, 2019. Our “Annual Meeting of the Membership” will be on March 4th and one of the most important issues on the ballot this year is a change in our Reserve Funding Fee (RFF.) This fee only applies to the transfer of homes in Corte Bella and has nothing to do with our annual assessments. It states in our CC&R’s that “The fee shall

Rumors have already started circulating with information that is simply not factual. Please don’t get caught up in the rumor mill. Study the facts!

not exceed one-half (1/2) of the Base Assessment applicable to the fiscal year in which the transfer occurs”. The Board approved raising this RFF to an amount “Not to exceed one hundred fifty (150%) percent of the Base Assessment applicable to the fiscal year in which the transfer occurs”. This fee funds any capital improvements and comes at no cost to current homeowners and this fee hasn’t been adjusted in fifteen years. Corte Bella RFF fees are currently well below the market by over two-thirds. Your board recommends a “YES” vote on this issue. You will be seeing much more on this important ballot issue before your vote is submitted. Rumors have already started circulating with information that is simply not factual. Please don’t get caught up in the rumor mill. Study the facts! We’ll also be gearing up for our annual meeting of the membership with presentations on all committee activities. As in the past, I‘ll be asking each committee to highlight their accomplishments, 2019 Goals, challenges and objectives in ten minute presentations so all residents can see what lies ahead. Please plan to attend this important meeting so you can see who the ‘Movers and Shakers” are that do the heavy lifting in Corte Bella on our behalf. The next Board Workshop will be Friday, January 18 at 9:00 am and the next Board Open Meeting, Wednesday January 23 at 10:00 am. Your thoughts, opinions and concerns are very important to me as your Board President. Contact me at any time, at mmcveigh3@cox.net/623-433-9921.

From the Editor’s Desk Linda Wright And so it begins, here in our first issue of 2019. The new year starts with an ample amount of enthusiasm for what’s in store for our community magazine, the CB Times. In March, this publication will be eleven (11) years old. With your help (in the form of continued or new contributions and other types of support), the CB Times will be something of real value and a

source of community pride. Please let me know if you’d like your interest group or club featured within the pages of our magazine. I would love to hear from you about your ideas for an article, a photo or an announcement in an upcoming issue. Drop me an email at trgibe@aol.com or text/call me at 571-426-1670. Good luck with those new year’s resolutions!

CULINARY Beef Wellington A recipe from Chef Dan

Executive Chef Dan Haywood, Anacapa Restaurant

Directions:

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C.) Place beef in a small baking dish, and spread with 2 tablespoons softened butter. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes, or until browned. Remove from pan, and allow to cool completely. Reserve pan juices. If using filets, pan sear 1 to 2 minutes on each side.

Ingredients: •

2 pounds beef tenderloin, trimmed, left whole or cut into 8 oz filets.

2 tablespoons butter, softened

2 tablespoons butter

1 onion, chopped

2 cup sliced fresh mushrooms

4 ounces liver paté

2 tablespoons butter, softened

salt and pepper to taste

1 (17.5 ounce) package frozen puff pastry, thawed

1 egg yolk, beaten

1 shallot, chopped

2 ½ cups beef broth

¼ cup red wine

¼ cup butter, cubed

Melt 2 tablespoons butter in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté onion and mushrooms in butter for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool. Mix together pate and 2 tablespoons softened butter, and season with salt and pepper. Spread paté over beef or top each filet with one quarter of mixture. Then, top with onion and mushroom mixture. Roll out the puff pastry dough in one large sheet (for whole fillet) or cut into four equal squares (for 8 oz fillets.) Place beef in the center, filling side down. Fold up and seal all the edges into the center. Use a little egg wash to help the edges stick, making sure the seams are not too thick. Place beef right side up in a 9X13 inch lightly greased baking dish. Cut a few slits in the top of the dough, and brush with egg yolk. Bake at 425 degrees F (220 degrees C) for about 30-40 minutes for the large single wellington, about 15-20 minutes for the small Wellingtons, or until pastry is a rich, golden brown. Set aside, and keep warm. The internal temperature should be about 130 degrees. Let rest for 10-15 minutes before serving for the large wellington 5-7 minutes for the small ones. If there are any juices that leak out, scoop them up and place in the beef stock. In a small sauté pan on medium high heat, sauté the shallot with a touch of oil. When translucent, stir in beef stock and red wine; simmer for 10 to 15 minutes or until reduced by half. Remove from heat, whisk in butter, and serve with beef and your favorite accompaniments.

CULINARY

Dawn Sego, Multi-talented Barb Morin This month’s featured Anacapa employee is Dawn Sego. She started working at the Anacapa restaurant in January of 2017. Her duties include being a server and a part time bartender. She has also contributed in a supervisory role from time to time. Dawn’s a native of Arizona, raised in Peoria and attended Peoria High School. She speaks very proudly of her three grown boys, ages twenty-three, twenty-one and eighteen. Dawn is quite handy with crafts, especially with woodworking. She has a special talent for seeing something once and then making a close replica of the item. She enjoys going to places like the Goodwill store to pick out second hand goods. Back home,

she’ll turn that item into something useful for someone or just use it to decorate her own house. She’s shown me some of her projects and they are truly remarkable. She also takes time out to do her own sewing, a talent that’s disappearing rapidly. If there’s any time left in the day from all of this, she enjoys cooking for the family, especially around the holidays. We’re really fortunate to have Dawn at the Anacapa Restaurant. However, her career choice to work here is quite ironic. It turns out, she has her credentials as a Certified Nurse’s Assistant right here in Arizona. She wanted to leave the restaurant business, until one day a close friend told her of an opening at the Anacapa. A few days passed and she finally made the decision to come in for an interview. She was immediately hired and is very happy to be working here. By the way, the friend who urged her to interview for the job is Steve, one of Anacapa’s longest serving employees. Thank you, Steve, for practicing as a part time recruiter for the restaurant! Next time you’re at the restaurant for dinner, “happy hour” or any event, please remember to take the time to say “Hi” to Dawn and thank her for being part of the Anacapa organization.

The Anacapa Restaurant - Lifestyle Amenity vs. For-Profit Business Dan Kronlund, Finance Committee Chairperson As the Corte Bella Country Club (CBCCA) Finance Committee Chairperson and Anacapa Advisory Group Chairperson (since August of 2017), I’m continually asked questions by homeowners that revolve around restaurant profitability. “Why is the restaurant not profitable?” “When will it become profitable?” Or, even more frustrating to me, “Why do we not close the restaurant if it is not profitable?” In the following paragraphs, I would like to make an attempt to lay out some important facts. The Restaurant, per se, is not now (nor was it ever intended to be) a for-profit business. Why do I say that? Several reasons come to mind – please note those listed below are specifically not intended to be all inclusive. The Anacapa Restaurant (also referred to as the Food & Beverage Amenity or F&B Amenity) does not have sufficient kitchen space, equipment, storage, refrigeration, or beverage service space and layout to be a for-profit operation. The Anacapa Restaurant was built to provide food and beverage services in support of lifestyle events and the needs of a private homeowner association (HOA) consisting of 1,650 homes. It was to be an amenity providing for the day-to-day limited meal service and support to Lifestyle Management event functions, café type gatherings, social hours, and smaller gatherings developed within the needs and desires of the homeowners.

State Licensed Beverage Opera8on §  Anacapa Liquor/Wine/Beer Service §  Wine/Beer Tas6ng Events §  Event Portable Bar Services

After several years of operation, past HOA Board of Directors and residents determined that to help supplement operational expenses and increase revenues, non-residents would be encouraged to experience the Anacapa. It was felt this would be in the best interest of the community and would decrease the total reliance for the amenity costs to be paid from homeowner assessments. That decision has been proven to be on point and the HOA Finance Committee has the numbers to support this statement. The Anacapa refrigeration, inventory, and equipment space was built with limited meal service and singular event needs in mind. Those plans did not contemplate quantity purchases of inventory, whether it be beverages, refrigerated cold storage inventory, or bulk purchases of non-perishable items. Accordingly, the F & B Amenity operation can not negotiate volume purchase discounts for inventory and products being sold. This is a major disadvantage in cost of goods sold compared to for-profit entities. Unlike for-profit restaurants (many of which are open seven days and eighty four hours or more weekly), the Anacapa Restaurant operation is open forty one and a half hours a week, closed Sunday afternoons and all day Mondays. These hours have been proven to meet the needs and demands of our homeowners for over twelve, almost thirteen years of operation.

The Anacapa Restaurant - Continued As a homeowner association owned food & beverage service, the restaurant specifically does not have the typical patron turnover rate of tables per hour. In other words, our homeowners/patrons are welcome to (and do) linger and socialize longer than the forprofit restaurants that rely on the increased number of customers served. The Anacapa relies on promotion of the Corte Bella lifestyle. Corte Bella is a gated community located in the northwestern Phoenix metro area and is not on the major traffic routes. The Anacapa does not have a great deal of public exposure. Nor would it be able to provide the quality of menu, service, and space necessary to increase patronage if a larger number of non-homeowners used the restaurant. Again this is due to the limitations of refrigeration, inventory, equipment capacity, and general facilities layout. The F&B Amenity provides staff support for almost every Corte Bella Lifestyle event, and is not reimbursed for those labor costs. This includes approximately four and one half HOA events monthly and $80,000 -$100,000 in non-restaurant payroll related expenses. The F&B Amenity provides setup and food for “First Friday’s with Pam” community meetings, the “Welcome to Corte Bella” events for newcomers, and a number of other special events – all of which are not reimbursed.

Corte Bella Country Club Association, an Arizona Non-Profit Corporation, under its Covenants, Conditions, and Restrictions (the “CC&R’s), specifically states that any change in its amenities, as covered in 4.10 (Provisions of Services), must be approved by a majority of residents. Annually, the Anacapa homeowner/ patron usage numbers (informal tracking) results show an excess of 50,000 customers patronizing the Anacapa. That number does not include the homeowners’ and guests’ usage during special events. Included with this article is a chart to show what the Food & Beverage amenity actively supports in Corte Bella. It begs the question: “What would Corte Bella be without this amenity?” The CBCCA Finance Committee, the Anacapa Advisory Group, the HOA Board of Directors, and specifically the HOA General Manager, Food & Beverage Management Team and staff, continue to devote time and effort to maximize the Food & Beverage Operation amenity’s benefits to the community. These efforts are evidenced in the improved financial results over the past year(s), improved service, menu selections, strong management, special focus events (for example “Build Your Own Pasta Night”), additional lifestyle events, and overall improved ambience. I emphasize, once again, “What would Corte Bella be without the Anacapa Food & Beverage amenity”?

COMMITTEES

From the Corte Bella Buildings and Grounds Committee’s Design Team Gayle Davis My name is Gayle Davis, and I’m the chair of the Design Sub Committee of the Building and Grounds Committee. While that may seem like a long title, the gist of it is that I represent one of the committees that is working hard to keep Corte Bella looking its very best. You may have noticed some changes here and there; one being the outdoor furnishings located near the Anacapa restaurant. We have had the original lounge chairs, loveseats and tables powder-coated in a beautiful bronze finish and have replaced the fifteen year old cushions. They have been covered in a classic “sunbrella” fabric. The blue cushions that were in the restaurant patio area have been re-covered in a beautiful coordinating fabric so that everything works together. Although these fabrics and finishes are durable, it’s imperative that we as a community maintain them. Please treat this furniture as you would your own, since in reality this is your furniture. If you spill something on a cushion, please wipe it up and let a restaurant staff member know so that we can make sure it doesn’t stain. If you just ignore it and turn the cushion over, the stain will become that much more difficult to remove.

If you move furniture around to accommodate your group, please try to return it to its original position. It’s up to each of us to take responsibility for maintaining the appearance of our community. We appreciate your cooperation, and together we look forward to keeping Corte Bella looking its absolute best. Thank you so much.

Please don’t take the cushions off without re-attaching the velcro straps.

Let New Residents Build Our Future Steve Michaud, HOA Board Director

Vote “YES” on Raising the Reserve Fund Fee Range (CC&R 10.13b) In the next few months, the residents of Corte Bella will hold a community vote on a number of items that will determine the future of our community. Along with the election of four open Board positions, there will be two additional items for your consideration. One item is the approval of the annual 70-604 IRS ruling that allows all HOA’s to avoid paying taxes on excess membership income by either refunding it or carrying it over to the next fiscal year. You as a homeowner vote on this each year as part of the Annual Meeting Ballot. You will also have the opportunity to vote on a proposed increase to what is called the “Reserve Fund Fee.” So, what is the Reserve Fund Fee? Simply put, it is the one-time fee paid by the buyer of a new home in Corte Bella at the close of escrow. In essence,

it is the “Buy In” fee that the vast majority of new homeowners understand and expect to pay when they relocate to an agerestricted HOA community. At this time, the fee is based on a percentage (currently 50%) of the annual assessment. The Board has recommended that we increase the range, “Not to exceed 150% of the annual assessment” and this new range is what you are being asked to approve. So now that we have discussed what the “Reserve Fund Fee” is, let’s talk about what it is not. The Reserve Fund Fee is NOT the same as the Annual Assessment. Voting to raise the current percentage range of the Reserve Fund Fee WILL NOT raise your Annual Assessment. The funds generated from the Reserve Fund Fee CANNOT be used for operational costs, salaries, or for ongoing maintenance of current facilities. Its sole purpose is to fund NEW Capital Improvement Projects (expansion of the Fitness Center, additions to the Social Hall and Anacapa dining, etc.) based on the work of the Long-

24 | CB Times | The Official Community Magazine of Corte Bella

continued on the next page

Let New Residents Build - Continued Term Planning Committee (LTPC) that will enhance the community for current and future residents. We have a beautiful community, and while we may all love the current amenities in place, we are always competing with other “Lifestyle” communities in the area that quite frankly are currently investing in new facilities and improved amenities. If Corte Bella is not planning now to visualize and build for an enhanced future, we will begin the slow and painful process toward mediocrity compared to our neighboring communities. So how are other communities funding their improvements? They are generating Capital Improvement Funds through their own version of the Reserve Fund Fee. Currently, based on 50% of our Annual Assessment, Corte Bella charges new buyers $936 for each home purchased. Sun City West charges new buyers $3,500 for each home purchased...yes, that’s $2,564 more going into the Sun City West coffers for each home purchased! In fact, Sun City generates the same $2,564 more for each home purchased, Trilogy generates an additional $1198 more than Corte Bella for each home purchased, and Sun City Grand generates an additional $604 for each home purchased... you get the picture. These communities are our direct competition as we each try to draw new buyers to our communities, and we have been falling further and further behind in that race each year. The vote to raise the current range “Not to exceed 150% of the annual assessment” will simply give the Board the opportunity to increase the Reserve Fund Fee at a later date based on the long-term plan for improvements to our community. Each of you as a community member will have the chance when that time comes to voice your opinion as to the appropriate level of that increase as we grapple with where the “sweet spot” is that balances both the needs of the community while staying competitive with the fees charged by surrounding communities. But, it is imperative that the vote to raise the range be approved and in place before any of those discussions can take place. Let New Residents Build Our Future! Vote “YES” on raising the Reserve Fund Fee range!

Corte Bella Vets News Karen Starkman The Corte Bella Vets will host their Fifth Annual Charity Golf Tournament at the Corte Bella Golf Club on Sunday, February 24th. This year the golf course is exclusively reserved for this event. Since 2014, the Corte Bella Vets have raised and donated over $160,000 to help Arizona Veterans. The purpose of this year’s golf tournament is to support efforts that combat veteran homelessness in the Phoenix Area. Proceeds from the tournament will support Catholic Charities’ MANA (Marines, Army, Navy, Airforce) House, Veteran’s First LTD’s Mary Ellen’s Place, and Project Veterans Pride’s James Walton Home. The tournament format is a “step-aside” scramble. Players may enter the “Tournament Group” (GHIN required) or the “Fun Group” (GHIN not required.) Both groups will be divided into flights and individuals will be awarded prizes for First, Second, and Third Place. Registration fee includes range balls, golf cart, putting and a chipping clinic (presented by the Corte Bella Golf Club Professionals), entry into four (4) Hole-N-One contests, a box lunch, a chicken or rib dinner, and a $70 tax deductible donation. Registration for the Golf Tournament begins at 8:00AM. A silent auction will be held all day. CB Vets Members, CB Residents and all other interested parties may enter a bid anytime during the day. A Corte Bella Vets representative will be at the auction canopy throughout the event. The silent auction will close prior to the beginning of dinner (6:00 PM) and a live auction will be conducted during dinner. Drop off boxes will be placed in the Anacapa breezeway and items will be collected several times during the day. We are asking for used clothing for both men and women. Additionally, we are expanding our drive to include slightly used dishes and flatware. These items will be donated to Mary Ellen’s Place in Phoenix. Corte Bella Vets have an exciting and interesting line up of guest speakers upcoming. Corte Bella Bridge Group Invitational Cathy Boorman On Saturday, November 17th, sixty four bridge players from Corte Bella and the surrounding area competed in the first Corte Bella Bridge Invitational. Players of all skill levels attended and enjoyed a day of bridge and camaraderie, as well as treats, trophies and door prizes! Trophies were presented to John Fiterman, Tom Stephenson, Peggy Johnston, David Johnston, Carol Stevens, Randy Asendorf, Rebecca Zere, Art Warwick, Shan Warwick, Karen Solheim, Charles Lee and Gerry Connor. The Corte Bella Bridge Club was started by Denise and Paul Jacobs in February 2006. The first few years, there were six to eight tables of players in the summer and that increased to eleven to thirteen tables in the winter. In 2008, the club became ACBL (American Contract Bridge League) sanctioned, which meant that players could now collect Master Points. The number of tables increased to thirteen to fifteen in summer and consistently eighteen in the winter (which is the maximum number the social room can handle for this activity.) The club is “By Invitation and Reservation”, which means that players need to call at least twenty four (24) hours ahead to get on the list for playing that week. Having a sanctioned bridge group at Corte Bella is definitely an asset!

For further information, please contact the group’s director, and one of the original organizers of Corte Bella Bridge Group, Paul Jacobs at 623-217-2803.

Another Wonderful SOuL Christmas Bake Sale and Boutique Linda Wright, SOuL member The Corte Bella social hall was filled with home baked cookies, cakes, candy, pies, breads, muffins and more on Saturday, December 8th, during the annual Smiling Out Loud (SOuL) charity bake sale and holiday boutique. Shoppers enjoyed purchasing delicious treats with all proceeds going towards SOuL’s charity support efforts here in the west valley. The raffle baskets were also a big draw along with the newly added SOuL Café, where shoppers were able to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and a snack after working their way through the wonderful vendors offering their wares in the boutique. SOuL thanks everyone who came out to support our annual Christmas holiday fund raising efforts. Our group is so very grateful for the community’s continued support and enthusiastic embrace of this event. SOuL appreciates those residents and

former Corte Bella residents who are not SOuL members but who donated bake goods to help our fund raising efforts. SOuL also thanks the Corte Bella HOA for their generous logistical support which was so critical to the success of this event. And, we are so very grateful to the Anacapa Food and Beverage Operation for the donation of the hot beverages for the SOuL Café. This wonderful bake sale is a true Corte Bella holiday tradition in every sense of the word.

Corte Bella Gifts to So Many Angels at Christmas Linda Wright The Spirit of sharing and caring for others was very much alive in Corte Bella this past Christmas. Together, the residents and the HOA employees who work in Corte Bella, donated Christmas toys, clothing, games and so many (more than 10) bicycles to disadvantaged children here in the west valley through the Salvation Army Angel Tree program. Our community gave to 225 children of all ages so that they would have a wonderful Christmas. Captain Kathy Merritt of the Salvation Army Sun Cities Corps expressed her amazement at the generosity of Corte Bella residents. Please know that your donations have truly demonstrated the real meaning of Christmas. Corte Bella, you’re good people, for sure.

Corte Bella Adventure Group Steve Downing Our annual Thanksgiving hike took place the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. This allowed some of our members who are usually away to hike this trail for the first time. The trail itself is fairly well maintained and winds through the desert hills, crosses washes, and is full of saguaro, cholla, palo verde trees, mesquite, ocotillo and jojaba. The first mile and a half is relatively easy, so anyone that can walk three miles can complete this section out and back.

Tempe Town Lake Bike Ride participants (from Left to Right) Beth Downing, Moira Curtis, Rich Ingram, Bob Curtis, Steve Taylor, Don Seller The hike to the saddle is a different story, as the trail switchbacks it’s way up the side of the mountain. As you climb, the views of the trail behind become visible almost to the parking lot. Not yet to the saddle, an awesome vista of mountains and valleys opens up on the horizon. Once reaching the saddle, the southeast views came into view, where in the distance we could see the mountains surrounding our valley. For most of the group, this is the break spot after a hard climb and a good place to turn around for the hike back. Every year, a few brave souls will conquer the peak. The trail from the saddle to the peak is not maintained and actually ceases any semblance of a trail requiring scrambling over rocks assuring hand and foot holds as you climb. The summit, however, gives an unblocked 360 degree view. The summit, not looking as far as you would think from a distance (bare rock), has small trees and cacti along with a few survey markers. There is also

an old ammo box with paper and pen to record your trip to the top. If you would like to find this trailhead, take loop 303 to Exit Rt. 60 (Grand Ave), west to Wickenburg. Once in Wickenburg, veer left onto Rt. 60 at the intersection (a traffic circle) of the 60 and 93. Continue about 2.5 miles on Rt.60 until you reach Vulture Mine Rd, which will be at a stoplight. Turn left and follow for 6.7 miles to the turnoff

for the Vulture Peak Trail, which will be marked well going either direction. Follow the well maintained dirt road through the parking lot, about a half mile to the trailhead. A word of caution; do not turn onto Vulture Peak Road. January hikes will include Lake Pleasant Yavapai Trail, Spur Cross Cave Creek Trail 252, and the White Tanks Ford Canyon Loop. Your Contributions to the Salvation Army – Where Do They Go? San Ramon Stringers What does the SALVATION ARMY do with the money and gifts donated by Corte Bella residents and their guests at Christmas time? Here are some facts: The SALVATION ARMY is the largest charity in the world and serves 131 countries. Audits show that $0.87 of each dollar donated goes to help people in need. The other $0.13 of each dollar goes to administration costs and building upkeep. Of the larger charities, this is by far the best “returned percentage”. Most large charities return $0.40 to $0.55 of each dollar donated to help others. There are several large charities, many which advertise on TV, that are in the “returned” range of $0.15 to $0.20. In these cases, the remaining 80 to 85% donated is used for advertising/administration expenses. This includes salaries as reported on TV – some as much as $700,000/year. Another safeguard offered by the SALVATION ARMY is internal and external audits performed every year. According to Captain Mark Merritt of the local Sun Cities Salvation Army Corps, “When money is specifically donated to a disaster, like California fires, 100% of the funds go to help those in need and no administration fees are deducted.” When asked about Corte Bella donations from the Stringers’ Red Kettle and the Corte Bella HOA’s Angel Tree, Mark’s response was “Each year after Christmas, the donations in all the Red Kettles in this area are totaled. Eighty Seven percent of all donations go to local people in need. The amount raised in the local Red Kettle campaign is divided by twelve and that is the Family Services Budget for the year. This pays for food and food donation pickups to help persons with emergency needs such as rent, utilities and to send some children to summer camps. Toys and money raised through the Angel Tree program goes directly to families who have children who would not have a Christmas without this program.”

Statitics for October 2017 thru September 2018: • 13,700 persons served – 6,000 for the first time. •

Food boxes averaged 440/month; assisted 406 families with APS bills, assisted 36 families with rent.

3,409 meals to Seniors, 94 backpacks/food boxes to homeless.

519 Kids at Creative Art on Mondays and 101 kids for Life Skills training.

Back to school – 404 kids given backpacks and $75 clothing vouchers at Walmart.

11,524 meals served to needy kids plus countless snacks.

400 Thanksgiving and Christmas food boxes.

Last Christmas – 1,398 kids with 13,000 toys and articles of clothing.

900 cases of water during heat relief to first responders (police, sheriff, fire departments.)

“You can be sure that the money you donate goes directly to help people in Surprise, Peoria, El Mirage and Sun Cities areas for basic needs, family services and back to school programs.” Mark Merritt also added “Each person or family we help is carefully vetted to verify that they are below the government poverty guidelines. Your contribution is appreciated more than words can express. On behalf of the Sun Cities West Valley Corps and the many people we help, THANK YOU!” Thank you for the generous donations made during the San Ramon Walk-About-Night on 7 and 8 December. The total from the Salvation Army Red Kettle collection is in and it’s a RECORD amount - $14,424.46! Because of the uncertain weather this year, a second evening was held allowing more residents and guests to visit our Christmas light display and make a RECORD contribution to the Salvation Army. These donations will go a long way to help the less fortunate members of our local community. If you donated, you should be very proud – the Stringers are! Thank you.

Smiling OUT Loud Reaches Out to Neighbors Linda Wright, SOuL member The Corte Bella ladies charity support group, Smiling OUT Loud (SOuL) has been busy lately with donations to a number of “neighbors” in our west valley area. With proceeds from the recent 3rd annual community chili cook off, SOuL donated to the Valley View Community Food Bank, the Salvation Army Sun Cities Corps and to the Thompson Ranch Elementary School. Thompson Ranch Elementary School, located on El Mirage Road, received support for their school Turkey Trot as SOuL provided the ten pies and the twenty pound turkey for this event. SOuL also donated $1,000 to purchase complete Thanksgiving Day meals and an additional fifteen turkeys that were all disbursed to needy families from the school’s population for Thanksgiving. There are 900 students at the elementary school and a large portion of the families are living at or below the poverty line. Carol Courter, a SOuL board member, shopped with the school’s principal Dr. Rachel Saunders to gather all the turkey dinner meal ingredients at a local grocery store. Additionally, SOuL is donating $2,000 to help defray the outof-pocket classroom supplies expenses for the more than 35 teachers at Thompson Ranch Elementary. The donation will

be handled by the Principal who will monitor this program and provide oversight on how the teachers use any funds given out. The Valley View Community Food Bank in El Mirage received a donation of $3,000 to be used during this long holiday season which sees many west valley residents requiring assistance with basic food needs. SOuL members recognize and appreciate the good work this organization does to feed the hungry. The Salvation Army Sun Cities Corps received a donation of $1,000 to assist them with replacing the chairs in their Avenue of the Arts facility dining room. With this donation, the Salvation Army can purchase fifty new chairs. This dining facility is used to provide meals for a diverse population (Breakfast for Seniors and meals for children and adults), meeting space for a multitude of different programs, and other types of assistance to west valley residents in need of help. SOuL appreciates the support of the Corte Bella community which allows our group to continue to reach out to our neighbors with a helping hand. Thank you all for your generous support to our organization. SOuL invites interested ladies of Corte Bella to join us on the third Thursday of each month at 10:30 AM in the social hall. Come check out SOuL – we would love to have you with us.

What’s Happening in Corte Bella For Pam Lawrence, compiled by Linda Wright

Veteran’s Day Dinner and Dance November 12 The Corte Bella Santa Barbara Room was decorated to honor all branches of the United States military and the Corte Bella Vets provided escorts for the colors/flags for each branch. The color guard from the city of Surprise police academy inspired the more than 100 residents in attendance. The program by the CB Vets and DJ Ray Mar made this tribute to our community veterans a memorable event. The dinner prepared and served by the Anacapa was excellent. Music and dancing that followed topped off another wonderful Veterans’ Day celebration.

Decorating Corte Bella for Christmas November 26 Christmas is a magical time and much of that magic comes in the form of the lights and decorations placed in the Anacapa, the social hall and around the entrance to both. It’s a big job getting this all done and Richard Lopez, Maintenance Supervisor, and his crew do a great job of setting up lights and such. But, the amazing work of a group of resident volunteers really is a remarkable thing and their efforts are appreciated by all of Corte Bella. Thank you!

Annual Christmas Tree Lighting and Buffet Sunday Cabaret November 25 A sold out crowd enjoyed a live music by the Aaron Nelson Project, a new experience for Corte Bella cabaret goers. Dancing and dining on bistro food prepared by the Anacapa had everyone enjoying every minute of the Sunday evening event.

November 28 The food served at the buffet was wonderful, the ambience was inspiring and the music performed by the Corte Bella chorus was so enjoyable. It was a perfect evening to open the Christmas holiday season in Corte Bella. Santa was there to do the honors and the Corte Bella Christmas tree illuminated both love and happiness for all who were there to watch it light up for the first time this Christmas.

The 3 International Tenors Christmas Holiday Concert

Christmas Holiday Sing Along

December 1

There was much singing and wishing each other a very happy holiday season during the almost one hour of music (both keyboard and guitar) in the Corte Bella social hall. The Corte Bella chorus provided some great entertainment for those in attendance and challenged everyone with some interesting Christmas Trivia questions. Thanks to our Lifestyle Manager, Pam Lawrence for the Christmas cookies and the trivia contest prizes. This event is a Corte Bella Christmas tradition.

A sold out crowd welcomed these three talented singers and the musicians who accompanied them during the performance. What an incredible evening of fine musical entertainment offered to us right here in Corte Bella. The Christmas music performed was so very special and the variety and range of the performing tenors was such a wonderful thing to witness. TAD Management does not disappoint.

Monday, December 10

Las Noches de Luminarias at the Desert Botanical Gardens December 5 Two bus loads of Corte Bella residents traveled to the Desert Botanical Gardens to walk among the 8,000 luminarias placed throughout the botanical gardens and to view the “Electric Desert” light show featured throughout the grounds and up onto the nearby mountain. It was a delightful experience and one worth the trip across the valley to see.

Cooking with Chef Dan – French Mother Sauces

Corte Bella’s 3rd Annual Christmas Golf Cart Parade Wednesday, December 12 There was golf cart with a giant Santa Claus face, a snow globe depicting a golfer’s dream of a hole in one, a cart full of elves, a Candy Cane scene, carts full of lights used in unique ways, and even a golf cart converted into a helicopter! Steve and Jackie Gnagi were awarded the prize for the best decorated golf cart. The parade route, “around the circle” and through the Christmas Streets of San Ramon, had many Corte Bella residents watching from the sidewalks. The delightful dinner buffet (prepared by the Anacapa) in the social hall after the parade was enjoyed by many parade participants and others from the community.

December 6 For the final cooking class of 2018, Executive Chef Dan Haywood amazed all in attendance with his masterful display of cooking five major (mother) sauces and ten variations in less than 3 hours. The results of his demonstration (or the fruits of his labor) provided everyone with a wonderful meal. It was a superb performance by Chef and one enjoyed by all who took this class.

Corte Bella Golf Club News Debbie Parks Dube Welcome to 2019 Corte Bella Residents! I hope everyone enjoyed the Holiday season. I always enjoy seeing the lights around Corte Bella. You all do such a nice job decorating. Golf Member Alan Hughes had a Hole in One on number 12 in December so give him a shout out if you see him in the neighborhood. We received a lot of new members in 2018. It is great to see the new members come to Corte Bella and fit right in with our current members. We have such a great group at the Golf Club. Of course it is always hard to see people move away and leave the area too. As always, please remember that we offer lunch daily unless we are having an event and we have breakfast on Fridays, Saturdays

and Sundays. There are televisions around the grill so if you are looking for a place to watch a game and have a drink, then come on in. It really is a great place to hang out and meet some nice people. Are you interested in learning the game of golf but don’t know where to start? Come in and talk to our golf pro’s. They can get you set up with lessons and get you started in the right direction on learning the great game of golf. Happy New Year! Our doors are open to all Corte Bella Residents.
