ASSOCIATION

Serving Others By now, the annual election has come and gone and we have a newly elected Board of Directors. This year, there were four openings to fill on the Board of Directors. These are the folks that are responsible for governing Corte Bella and overseeing over seven million Mike Arrington, HOA General Manager dollars of homeowner money, not to include the property and assets. Out of 1,650 homes, four volunteers stepped up to run for the four open positions. That’s it. They volunteered to dedicate their time to work on your behalf and to make sure Corte Bella remains the great community that it is, and they took the risk of being rejected. Sometimes, they have some hard decisions to make related to the interest of the community that are not fun to make and maybe have to support something they don’t agree with once the voting is all over and done in order to support the majority. They attend training sessions and give up personal time with families and friends. They miss things that they wanted to do and would have done if they had the time or didn’t have a conflict with community business. Many sacrifices are necessary by these individuals to fulfill their commitment to you and the community. I am fairly certain that the average individual does not really understand the commitment just to do the job; let alone to do it as well as it has been done in the past.

achievement of these folks is mind boggling when you take a close look. Some of those folks either started out with or ended up on a committee or two after their service on the board. It takes a special personality to be that unselfish and want to do things for others with nothing to be gained personally; and truly, these are the people that make Corte Bella such a great community. Of the 1,650 homes in the community, I doubt that two thirds could even tell you who the board president is or any of the names of the other volunteer directors working on their behalf. That said, I want to extend a personal thank you to all of those who serve on the board or committees and to those who have served in the past over the years as a board director or committee member. These are the folks who have made Corte Bella desirable, and kept it that way for nearly 15 years now. Many of them have moved on but are still appreciated and remembered. Just in my time here alone, many great people have served Corte Bella. To all of you who have served, thank you for your service, and congratulations to the new class just beginning to serve. I hope that this article will help everyone to appreciate the job these volunteers do and have done for you. Maybe you will extend your own personal thanks when you see them in public, and with a little better understanding and realization of the commitment they have made and kept. Thank you all for stepping up when no one else would. And a very special thank you to Jim Williams and Michael McVeigh who worked so hard and diligently as board presidents during my time here at Corte Bella. You would think they both were collecting a nice pay check every week due to the level of effort and time put forth. Of course, they were not…

Corte Bella has been very fortunate in the past to have had many great leaders step up and make the commitment to their community and the people who live here. The level of talent and

Board Talk March 2019 We hope everyone is taking advantage of their right to vote in the Board of Director election. We have four outstanding candidates to fill the four open positions (should be close this year.) Thanks to the four candidates for your commitment to our community. In addition to the Director elections, there are two other important issues Michael McVeigh, CBCCA HOA Board President

to consider. The Board recommends a “YES” vote on both if you haven’t already voted. As I wind down on my 5th year as a Director and the 3rd year as your board president, I’m confident in knowing our new board will continue to move our beautiful community forward in a positive and meaningful way. By the time you read this, our “Meet and Greet the Candidate Nights” are behind us and I’m looking forward to the next year working with our new board. All director election ballots are due at the Association office not later than 12:00 P.M. on March 4, 2019. The 2019 Super Bowl Party was another outstanding event here in Corte Bella. This was our 5th year doing this for our residents. The game moved slowly along with scoring but the guests enjoyed the event and the food. Thanks to the staff for giving up your day for us. Thanks to Chef Dan for the wonderful buffet. Our “Annual Membership Meeting” will be held on March 4th

and one of the most important issues on the ballot this year is a change in our Reserve Funding Fee (RFF.) This fee only applies to the transfer of homes in Corte Bella and has nothing to do with our annual assessments. It states in our CC&R’s that “The fee shall not exceed one-half (1/2) of the Base Assessment applicable to the fiscal year in which the transfer occurs.” The board approved raising this RFF to an amount “Not to exceed one hundred fifty (150%) percent of the Base Assessment applicable to the fiscal year in which the transfer occurs”. This fee funds any proposed new capital improvements and comes at no cost to current homeowners. This CC&R language needs to be modified and it hasn’t been adjusted in fifteen years. Corte Bella RFF fees are currently well below the market by over two-thirds. Your board recommends a “YES” vote on this issue. You will be seeing much more on this important ballot issue before your vote is submitted. Rumors have already started circulating with information that is simply not factual. Please don’t get caught up in the rumor mill. Study the facts! The due date for this Absentee Ballot 20192 issue is April 30, 2019 at 5:00 PM. Our Annual Membership Meeting will also include brief presentations from all chartered committees on project status, past accomplishments and 2019 initiatives. This is your opportunity to learn what volunteers are doing on your behalf. Please make plans to attend this important meeting and show your support. We will not be holding a workshop or open board meeting in March but the next important meeting will be the organizational meeting on April 1st at 10:00 a.m. The organizational meeting will determine who the board officers and committee liaison assignments for the next year will be. Your thoughts, opinions and concerns are very important to me as your board president. Contact me at any time, at mmcveigh3@cox.net/623-433-9921.

From the Editor’s Desk Linda Wright An eleventh anniversary is traditionally celebrated with a gift of steel. Steel is valued for how durable and strong a metal it is. The compound mixture of iron and carbon is highly resistant to corrosion and damage.

The CB Times is officially eleven (11) years old this month – March 2019.

If you look on the Corte Bella website (Resource Center, Community Publications, CB Times), you can see the premier issue from March 2008. Eleven years later, this magazine’s

reputation remains as “strong”, like steel, as it was then if not stronger. Its importance to this community remains high and fortunately, the support from the residents (both in the form of contributions and readership) is one that never waivers. I’m very proud to be the editor of a community publication that provides an excellent vehicle for communication on many important levels and one that instills pride in our community. The CB Times allows us to celebrate our many accomplishments both as a whole and individually too. Happy anniversary to you, CB Times! May you have many more occasions to celebrate.

Braised Lamb Stew Executive Chef Dan Haywood, Anacapa Restaurant Note from Chef Dan: “I’ve received a lot of requests for our lamb stew and Shepherd’s Pie recipes from the Anacapa Restaurant over the years. Here’s the recipe we prepare - broken down for home cook use. Lamb is always a favorite for me in the spring. This one is great for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.”

Ingredients: •

salt and ground pepper

3 pounds leg of lamb meat; cut into 1 1/2-inch cubes

1/4 cup olive oil

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

6 celery stalks, chopped

2 large leeks, diced

2 large yellow onions, diced

Salt and pepper the lamb chunks. In a large ovenproof Dutch oven, sauté the meat in both oils until browned on all sides. Remove the meat from the Dutch oven and set aside.

½ cup red wine

1/2 teaspoon rosemary, fresh, chopped

1/2 teaspoon thyme, fresh, chopped

2 cups beef or chicken broth

1/4 cup butter

1/4 cup flour

Directions:

In the same Dutch oven, sauté the celery, leeks and onions until softened, about 3 minutes. Add fresh herbs and wine. Add the butter and then stir in the flour until smooth. Return the meat to the Dutch oven. Add the beef broth, mix well, cover and bake in the oven until the meat is fork tender, about 2 hours. Stir occasionally. If it looks too thick, add a little more broth. Serve with mashed potatoes or rice. This is a great cold weather dish or a hearty main course anytime.

CULINARY

Wine & Food: Uncorked Deborah Damery Lazear, CSW This month we are going to explore the best wine pairings for Asian, Thai, Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese, and other spicy cuisines starting with the oft asked question:

“Why do wines with some residual sugar go well with spicy foods?” Sweetness will take some of the heat out of a spicy dish. But what is “sweet”? It is easiest to determine the sweetness (amount of sugar left in the wine when fermentation is stopped) by looking at the alcohol level. Less than 10% alcohol has residual sugar that you will taste but the wine will not be sugary because wine makers protect the acid. These wines are called off-dry. Classic Riesling Spätlese has around 8% alcohol. This wine pairs beautifully with spicy Asian dishes. Viognier from the Loire (make sure it is off-dry) is another good choice. Greek Assyrtiko from Santorini also fits the bill. Always on my list is sparkling in the Dry category (Dry has some sweetness while Brut has very little residual sugar.)

“What is it about low alcohol that helps tame a spicy dish?” Alcohol makes the dish taste hotter. One might think that pairing a spicy wine like Gewürztraminer with spicy food would be a good match. It isn’t. That is too much of a good thing. Kind of like an outfit that is “matchy matchy”!

“What would be a good pairing with Chinese Moo Sho Pork or Peking duck?” A light fruity red such as Dolcetto d’Alba, a Valdiquié, or some California Pinot Noirs are good choices. An unusual choice would be a Brachetto d’Acqui. Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it!

“I love sushi and sashimi but I don’t want sake.” No worries. Try a white Torrontés from Spain or a lighter Pinot Noir from the Côte de Beaune.

“What can I do to balance the salty soy-seasoned food?” The salty flavor of soy can dull the flavor of many wines leaving them neutral tasting. To counter, go back to rule #1: a wine with a touch of residual sugar.

Wine of the Month: Riesling Your first reaction might be “Are you kidding me? I hate Riesling. It is so sweet.” Let’s approach that statement head on. We are not talking Blue Nun here. Riesling is a grape that really shines in cooler climates. It can be made dry, off dry, or really sweet. Germany is the obvious first pick, but not so fast. Parts of Southern Australia are now turning out terrific dry Rieslings as is Washington State, New York State’s Finger Lakes district, and Virginia. Alsace in France has long been famous for stellar Rieslings with a racy acidity. For German or Austrian off dry Rielsings, look for Spätlese on the label. The category known as Kabinett will be the driest with lots of acidity. Pair with: • • • •

Thai Spicy lettuce wraps Washed rind cheese Peanut satay Spicy tuna roll

It is true that Riesling can be made with a high sugar level. One level is called Riesling Auslese. It is a dessert wine. Late harvest Rieslings are the sweetest of all. Look for Trockenbeerenauslesen on the label. It is usually sold in 375 ml bottles. It pairs beautifully with desserts that emphasize peaches and apples. If you are wondering where Hock fits in, it is the British name for Rhine Rielsing coming from the village of Hochheim in the Rheingau. Queen Victoria is credited with the line “A bottle of Hock keeps off the Doc.” Hock glasses are usually green stemmed.

CULINARY

A Very Promising Future Barb Morin This month’s featured Anacapa employee is Alex Corella. He was hired just one year ago in February 2018. He began work by clearing and preparing tables for people coming to dine. His ambition and ability to learn things soon got him to the level of expediter and server. Alex learned of an opening at the Anacapa through an employee here and they soon became best of friends. Alex is a native of Arizona and attended Willow Canyon High School in Surprise. Alex has a younger brother and older sister. He loves sports such as football, track and baseball but his favorite is soccer. While attending school, he played the position of goalie and helped lead his players to 1st Team All Region. He also speaks proudly of his enrollment in the International Baccalaureate Program. Upon completion, he was awarded the degree and promptly earned eighteen college credits. Earlier, I mentioned of his need to learn and his pent-up level of energy. It turns out, Alex has already set his compass for life in various ways. After working for his father and then a short while with U.P.S, he decided he wanted to go to school and become a corporate lawyer. However, his father instilled in him the need to serve our country. So before going off to college, Alex decided to join the U.S. Marine Corps. He was sworn in this past January and will be headed to the San Diego Recruiting Depot for twelve weeks of rigorous “boot camp” training. His plans include six years of active duty and four years in the reserves. Alex, on behalf of all of us here in Corte Bella, we always regret losing such a wonderful and dedicated employee as you have proven to be. However, I’m confident that same regret will be quickly erased knowing that you’ve joined the ranks of millions of other men and women to proudly serve and protect our great country. I know you’ll give it your level best. Semper Fi, Alex!

COMMITTEES

Living in an HOA Dan Kronlund What was I thinking? I bought into a 55+ adult (age restricted) community operating under a private Homeowner Association (an “HOA.”) This place has more rules and regulations than it has people! I am a conservative person and prefer a more limited government intervention. This HOA has its own set of governing documents including goofy names like Declaration of Covenants, Conditions, and Restrictions (the CC&R’s), Bylaws, and Resident Architectural Design Guidelines, which include numbers and types of plants that one can put in their own yards including how close and tall they can be related to property boundaries. WOW! Get me out of here! Wait A Minute. Nobody placed any undo influence on me or put a gun to my head forcing me to buy into such a community. I did it to myself. Maybe I should have done more research on this place and read all those governing documents I was provided prior to purchasing. After all, I even acknowledged receiving and signing them, agreeing that I would abide by each and every regulation, rule, restriction and/or covenant. Is this 55+ adult HOA community for me or did I make a mistake? Sound familiar to anyone out there reading this? So, why did I purchase a home here? For some, “ignorance” might come to mind. For others, maybe it’s because of the many more positive qualities and offerings Corte Bella provides and the vibrant and active life style to be enjoyed here. True, this adult community called the Corte Bella Country Club Association (aka “the Jewel of the West Valley”) does have all those governing issues outlined above. And true again; some rules, regulations, restrictions, and other governing items may have a need for rethinking and revisions. But, so does every other HOA community and so does every other non-HOA community. In my prior life, I lived outside of HOA’s and had most of these same issues to live with. But, when I was younger, I didn’t have the time or desire to get involved and become more knowledgeable on the issues. Guess that isn’t my excuse today. So, maybe I should become more knowledgeable and devote more time to learn about the HOA community I chose to live in.

Why did I initially buy into Corte Bella and why do I continue to appreciate being here? •

It sure is well maintained and has a lot more colorful vegetation than many desert communities.

The community has a public golf course that I can play, and pay only when I play.

The streets aren’t cluttered with cars, RV’s, Boats.

We have our very own Food & Beverage Operation offering a good menu and tons of lifestyle events.

Really great amenities for a smaller community.

Easy access to our amenities, no traffic congestion, greater opportunity to be heard and be involved.

Financially sound management with $3.6 Million in reserves, minimal assessments and strong operating cash flow.

Private roads, street lighting, parking lots, landscaping and more; all fully under our management.

Well qualified, seasoned, and proven third-party professional management.

Holy Cow! I could go on for pages listing all the positives. Guess my mentors were right when they said I have three choices in life. •

Accept what I have and don’t sweat the small stuff;

Be proactive and try to facilitate reasonable and positive changes; or

If I can’t accept or change what I have, move and look for greener pastures, which will also have its own set of brown pastures.

In conclusion, please remember that this is your community and we are all in this together. Be a part of the solution to issues that face us as Corte Bella becomes fifteen years old. Participate in committees, meetings and other opportunities to preserve our “small town” as the best place to live in the Northwest Valley of the Sun.

Narrative: Net surplus to budget for the month of December is $24,536. Favorable variances include Admin Net $17,390, HOA Net $3,092, Facilities $6,390 and Spa Net $3,510. The primary unfavorable continues to be Restaurant ($2,370) and Guardhouse ($2,588.) Year end (YE) results are positive with favorable variances in Admin Net $44,630, Facilities $36,835, HOA Net $8,486, Landscape $9,564, and Spa Net $7,019. Unfavorable at YE is the Restaurant ($29,289) and the Guardhouse ($17,576). The Restaurant YE actual was a deficit of $123,308 as compared to budgeted deficit of ($94,019). Payroll expenses were under-budgeted by approximately $123,040, due to the 2017 and 2018 state mandated minimum wage increases of $2.50 hour plus related payroll burden. Also under-budgeted

in the restaurant was the Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) by $67,369. Both under budgeted items were partially offset by Restaurant revenues excess to budget of $143,674. The increased COGS related directly to increased sales of food & beverage. The Guardhouse deficit continues to be related to gate accidents and older equipment requiring more frequent repairs. In summary, 2018 YE provided for excess cash flows to budget of approximately $60,000. It is important to note that the Restaurant budget includes payroll related expenses for HOA Events in the approximate amount of $83,983. Adjusting for that number, the actual estimated Restaurant deficit results would be ($39,325) or $23.83 per lot annually.

*TOTAL SURPLUS/(DEFICIT) Summary: Net Results of operations Year End Dec 31, 2018 are favorable to budget by $59,949. The chart above itemizes where each member’s HOA operating assessment dollars were spent in the year 2018. With the HOA owning its streets, street lighting, landscaping, irrigation systems, buildings, security assets, computers, and other fixed assets, it is not unexpected that approximately 86% of all operating dollars relate to managing and maintaining the fixed assets. Our revenue producing amenity operations that include the Restaurant and HOA Events (aka Food & Beverage Operations), Spa and Fitness Center, provided

for approximately $1,710,308 in revenue as compared to related expenses of $1,973,981. The difference of ($263,673) represents $159.80 per lot annually or 10.72% of the operating assessment, excluding fixed asset maintenance related expenses such as utilities, insurance, taxes, etc. Those fixed asset expenses would continue to exist regardless of what operational or other uses on or within the locations. Over all the 2018 year’s operations were favorable. On behalf of the Finance Committee, we would like to thank First Service Residential and its entire team for a job well done.

COMMUNITY

Corte Bella Vets News Karen Starkman A big thank you to all who came out, participated, donated, and/or sponsored our 5th Annual charity golf tournament along with our silent and live auctions. A special thanks to our major sponsors: Bill and Karen Isaacson, Tony D’Andrea and Tom Poole, owners of Midas Automotive Centers on 59th & Bell in Glendale and on 99th & Grand in Sun City (just to name a few.) We cannot forget the many non-golfing volunteers as we could not have done it without them. The total proceeds from the event will be announced in the near future. The Corte Bella Community has once again overwhelmed our charities. Thank you to all who donated to our 2019 clothing and flatware drive. The Mana House, Mary Ellen’s Place, James Walton Home, and the St. Vincent De Paul Society all were excited and pleased with our donations and look forward to our continued support. Several members from the Corte Bella Vets participated in this year’s Maricopa County StandDown. The Arizona StandDown is an alliance of community based organizations that come together to provide services and resources to the State’s homeless and at-risk veterans. While males comprise the highest number of homeless veterans, females make up approximately eight percent.

About one-third of homeless veterans were stationed in a war zone at some time, and according to Veterans Inc., returning veterans are twice as likely to become chronically homeless as other Americans. No Veteran should be homeless in our Country and that is why the Corte Bella Vets are joining other nonprofits to do something about veteran homelessness. Back by popular demand, the Corte Bella Vets will be hosting a Spring Dance and a Little Bit of Comedy Fundraiser on Saturday, April 6th. Both our DJ and comedian are CB residents and active members of the Corte Bella Vets. Tickets will be available during Anacapa’s Happy Hour beginning March 12th and at the Spring Market Event on Sunday March 24th. Tickets are $15.00 per person and all proceeds will go toward fighting/preventing veteran homelessness within the Northwest Valley.

Tommy F. Crawford, Major General USAF (Ret.) A Member, Neighbor and Friend The CB Vets are honored to have General Crawford as guest speaker at the April 10th annual evening meeting in the Corte Bella social hall at 6:00 PM. CB Vets meetings are open to the community and all are invited to attend. General Crawford obtained his BA degree and was commissioned a second lieutenant through the Air Force ROTC program at New Mexico State University in May 1972. He obtained a MS degree in computer information systems at Boston University along with several specialty degrees at military schools and institutions such as MIT and Harvard. General Crawford served as an instructor pilot, squadron weapons and tactics officer, F-111A flight commander, A-7D and F-117A Nighthawk weapons and tactics chief, assistant operations director and

major command inspector general. General Crawford also flew A-10s and F-117s and is a Desert Storm veteran with more than 3,000 hours in fighter aircraft. The general later served as the Deputy Chief of the Central Security Service, National Security Agency. He then became the Commander, Air force Command and Control, and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Center. Among a number of responsibilities, he implemented the Air Force experimentation which included developing open architectures and managed C2 and ISR systems and budgets. After thirty four years of dedicated military service, General Crawford joined Lockheed Martin as Vice President of Strategic Development. He now has a private consulting business serving the Department of Defense and defense industries. General Crawford has been the recipient of a multitude of major awards and decorations to include several Distinguished Flying Crosses. Tommy and his wife, Judy, are residents of Corte Bella and are the proud parents of three daughters who provided eight grandchildren; all living in Arizona. When the Crawfords are not entertaining family and friends, you will find both on the golf course looking for positive strokes.

Corte Bella Adventure Group Steve Downing The last four weeks were busy for the Corte Bella Adventure Group’s Tuesday hikes. Spur Cross Trail 252 took us into the wilderness area of Tonto National Forest. Even though I’ve been in this and other wilderness areas around the country, I never really considered “What is a wilderness area”? The quote or definition below was written by Howard Zahniser of The Wilderness Society and became the legal definition of wilderness in the United States. This definition also became the framework around which the Wilderness Act of 1964 was written and signed into law by President L.B. Johnson. “A wilderness, in contrast with those areas where man and his own works dominate the landscape, is hereby recognized as an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain.” - Howard Zahniser It may also be assumed that there are no cell services there and should rescue become necessary, you may be on your own. For those that spend much time in or venture deep into Wilderness area, there are services such as satellite phones or emergency locators which may be used for communication or be used to pinpoint your location. Another interesting factoid that came to light is the small percentage of Arizona land which is privately owned. I’ve seen some real estate sources that state only 17% of Arizona is privately owned. In 2015, however, U.S. Representative Paul

Cave Creek Gosar stated: “Five federal agencies, the US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, Fish and Wildlife Service and Department of Defense manage 42.1% of Arizona Land. State Trust Land makes up 12.7% and Arizona Tribes own 27.1%, which leaves 18.1 percent for us private owners.” We also hiked in the White Tanks Ford Canyon Trail, a ten mile loop; the Black Canyon Trail (which makes up part of the Maricopa Trail) and a local hike over in Deem Hills. The Deem Hills Circumference Trail is only 5.73 miles which was completed in plenty of time for some lunch before returning to Corte Bella. Tonto National Forest looking toward Skull Mesa

This donation means that all the 100 chairs in the dining room will be replaced through SOuL donations. Additionally, SOuL presented a check for $2,000 that will help with sending ten children to camp this summer. SOuL President, Carla Smith and Treasurer, De Dow are seen in the photos with Captain Kathy Merritt of the Sun Cities Salvation Army Corps. Captain Kathy took SOuL representatives on a tour of their food pantry during this visit and she discussed the many programs that will benefit from the new chairs in their dining room (replacing those that have been there since 1984.) Fertilizing Tips for Landscape Trees and Shrubs Shirley Williams, Corte Bella resident Corte Bella is now approximately fifteen years of age. The majority of the plants have been established in our landscapes and do not need fertilizing. And, the majority of our plants in our landscape are xeriscape or desert adapted plants. They are drought resistant and have adapted to the low humidity, low rainfall, and alkaline soils. These include plants such as lantana, yellow bells, sage, oleander and trees as olive, mesquite, palo verde and the like. Fertilizing them increases growth and thus more water use and pruning. However, iron and nitrogen deficiencies are more likely to occur in this desert environment causing leaves to yellow. Contact your local nursery for proper treatment. (Source AZ pub 1048 and pub 1609, Diagnosing Nutrient deficiencies) However, new plantings and palms need fertilizing. Residents of Corte Bella are now replacing and changing some plants, and these new plantings need fertilizer the first few years to promote growth and disease resistance.

Tip #1 Plants need a well-balanced Diet. Primarily they need nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K), plus micronutrients such as iron. Balanced nutrient concentrations are recommended, for example 10-10-10, 20-2020. Slow release granular forms give the best results and need not be repeated frequently.

Tip #2 Fertilize in early spring. This early application prepares the plant for harsh weather. Avoid fertilizing in the late fall, which can stimulate growth and make the plant more frost sensitive.

Tip #3 Proper application is required. The fertilizer needs to get to the roots of the plants. It should be applied where the irrigation is so it can be washed into the soil. The fertilizer needs to be mixed into the soil and irrigation must be done after application. Always read and follow the label directions for application rates and guidelines. (Source AZ pub 1048, Care of Desert Adapted Plants, extension. Arizona.edu/MaricopaMG and www.aridzonetrees.com). Palms have their own fertilizer, called Palm Tree Food. Palm food has less phosphorus and more nitrogen. Look for 10-20 N, 5 P and 10-20 K with micronutrients. It should be applied in a similar fashion as above, under the canopy, but avoiding the base of the plant. These fertilizers are also available in a granular form. Apply to established palms (after their first summer in the ground) in mid-spring and then again in early summer. As above, follow the directions on the package. Magnesium, nitrogen, potassium deficiencies may occur in this desert soil causing yellowing of the fronds. If noted, contact your nursery for proper treatment. (Source AZ pub 1021, Arizona Landscape Palms, extension.Arizona.edu/MaricopaMG).

Your Corte Bella Garden in March “Ladybug” Deborah Lazear • • • • • • • • • •

Do major pruning of trees and shrubs; next chance is in August and September. Prune any palm any brown fronds that hang from 3:00 PM and 9:00 PM location only. For more blooms, fertilize with 0-45-0. Fertilize palms. Fertilize citrus in pots. Fertilize shrubs with granular 20-20-20 mix; most important is lots of Sulphur - ½ cup per plant. Add iron to earth around Little John’s if they are looking a bit yellow. Change watering schedule for warmer weather. Ok to plant new flowers such as vinca, basil, chives, cilantro. Add water emitters as plants and trees grow; should be three to four feet apart.

• • • • • • • •

32 | CB Times | The Official Community Magazine of Corte Bella

Plant flowers ¼” above soil line. Plant shrubs ½” above soil line. Plant trees 1” to 2” above soil line. Transplant agave pups; dig up the pups, rest in shade for a few days, then plant. Plants that are mature size need two emitters per plant. Plant tomatoes mid-month to allow plenty time for roots before the summer heat. Sow seeds for bush beans, cucumbers, melons, okra, and summer squash. Choose nursery veggies with six leaves on plant; tomatoes & peppers that are wider than they are tall and don’t buy if they are forming a fruit. Plant garlic after mid-month.

Super Bowl 53 Party February 3 Corte Bella continued its tradition with another blow-out party for the Super Bowl. While the game itself was a bit of a letdown score-wise, the party was a run away success with great food, lots of door prize drawings and some happy winners of the wagers on the board. Thank you to Chef Dan and his Anacapa staff for the delicious food and drink for this event. Thank you to Pam Lawrence and her volunteers for their work to provide a special time for all. Thank you to HOA General Manager Mike Arrington for being Master of Ceremonies for the afternoon’s festivities.

Cooking with Chef Dan – For Ladies Only! February 1 It was a sold out cooking demonstration with Executive Chef Dan Haywood presenting a menu specially created for the ladies of Corte Bella. The beautifully decorated tables in Valentine’s Day theme (thank you, Linda and Sue) favored the wonderful presentation of French onion soup, Italian wedding soup, chicken Involtini salad with basil and sun dried tomatoes and an amazing chocolate hazelnut fondue to finish off the afternoon’s delights. A glass of champagne helped the ladies to feel sufficiently pampered. Flawless service from Anacapa staff members Stephanie Martin and Steve Haytasingh during the event is always such a pleasure to receive.

Corte Bella Golf Club News Debbie Parks Dube Greetings Corte Bella Residents. Another winter season has come to an end and our beautiful spring season is here. The golf course has held up well and is in great shape. The fairly wet winter has brought a fair amount of weeds to the red rock areas. Our maintenance staff is working hard to spray for weeds but this year is proving to be more of a challenge than most.

Corte Bella residents can always come into the golf club. Our golf shop is stocked with great merchandise. Our grill is open for lunch every day (unless we are having an event) plus we are open for breakfast every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We offer a variety of different golf memberships and I would love to tell you about our options.

Overall it has been a great season for us. Members are enjoying numerous events and tournaments around the club and the lady putter group has grown bigger than ever.

Corte Bella Pickleball News Robin Mandell Our Corte Bella Pickleball Club was formed in 2012. Our by-laws dictate that every February 1st we form a new Board of Directors. We’ll introduce you to this year’s Board members next month, but we’d like to formally thank our two outgoing Board members: Carolyn Pakan was instrumental in organizing our social activities the last two years, and she played a big role in revising our above referenced by-laws. She is also a good player and has won several tournament medals. Ruth Ann (Rudy) Black has been a member of our Board since the formation of the club. Her organization and administrative skills made a huge contribution to the Board. The by-laws would not have been finalized without her! Her cool head and patience will be sorely missed.

See you out at the courts day or night!

As with all other activities in Corte Bella, March is busy for Pickleball players. Our courts are full morning, noon, and night. Club members are winning all kinds of medals at local tournaments.
