ASSOCIATION

The Streets of Corte Bella Ladies and Gentlemen:

By now, a lot of our friends are no doubt headed to their summer sanctuary. We will miss them and look forward to seeing them again in the fall. It is estimated that about half of Corte Bella retreats during the summer months to escape the “100 days of Hell” as I’ve

Mike Arrington, General Manager

heard some affectionately call our summer months. That said and for those of you who remain here in Corte Bella to look the hot summer days directly in the eye, we will be starting a major maintenance effort on our community streets very soon. And with a good part of the community gone, that is the best time to do it. Typically we will only fill the cracks with sealant every year and then move on. This year, it is time to do the seal coating effort again, which was last done in 2014 for those of you that were here then. This process occurs about every 5 years or so. The process involves the annual crack sealing effort in addition to the complete seal coating of the entire road surface. This seals out the water from rain and irrigation water that undermines roads and streets while shortening their useful lives if not attended to properly. One of the things that makes Corte Bella a special community is the comprehensive road maintenance plan that covers the next twenty five (25) years of maintenance. Fortunately, your past Boards, Finance, and Buildings and Grounds committees have over the years formulated good plans and the resources to do this. This effort will take about 5 weeks or so in total and when finished, the roads will be a nice black color again, the cracks

will be sealed up and protected, and we will refresh all of the traffic lines so they “pop” again. This effort extends the life of the streets to defer the very expensive replacement process that will eventually over time be required. Seal coating is kind of like putting lotion on your skin or waxing a car. Both things protect the surface and extend the life and appearance. Sealing the cracks helps to prevent water from penetrating the surface and undermining the road base. The cost of this entire effort will probably approach the half million dollar mark when all is said and done. This maintenance effort will be done in neighborhoods one at a time until the entire community is completed. There will be slight delays but traffic control will be in place and no one should ever have to wait very long. Some roads will be blocked off for about a day until they reopen the next. You should avoid driving through the new seal coat whenever possible so that you do not track it on to your driveways, but that should not be a problem once barriers are removed and the street is reopened. By that time, the coating is dry enough that it can be driven through. Inevitably, someone always drives through a barrier, so holding my breath on that one but counting on it. We will make the best effort possible to keep you informed via the Corte Bella website of areas affected and other information pertaining to the things you need to know. Rain will more than likely delay work as it occurs, although the plan is to beat the monsoons which always begin as soon as I get the 4th of July party set up and ready to go. You know what they say, “in to everyone’s life, a little rain must fall.” Let’s hope not and keep your fingers crossed. Any questions, comments or concerns should be directed to the General Manager’s office. Enjoy your Summer wherever you choose to spend it, keep cool and hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. To those reading this from afar, see you soon.

From the Editor’s Desk Linda Wright The time is quickly approaching that brings the heat and the unavoidable change in how we approach each day here in Corte Bella. This issue of the CB Times is a combined one for the months of May and June as is our tradition throughout the summer months (July and August are also combined.) It’s a challenge to ensure the information in each of those issues will be timely and correct. All the volunteers working on this publication take that responsibility very seriously. As the temperatures rise, remember to keep an eye out for your neighbors. Corte Bella is designed so that you can do that fairly

easily. Report anything you see that may not look right to you. If you’re traveling, use the Residents and Visitors Management System on the Corte Bella website’s first page to let the Front Gate security services know when you’ll be gone from Corte Bella. Enjoy your summer and for those remaining here in Arizona, make the most of what Corte Bella offers during these warm/hot months. See you at the pool, on the HOA Events trip north to the Grand Canyon or perhaps on the Anacapa patio for a cool drink.

For the Eggrolls: In a large bowl, combine cream cheese with sugar, sour cream, vanilla, and kosher salt. Using a hand mixer, beat ingredients until fully combined. Fold up bottom half and tightly fold in sides. Gently roll, then seal fold with a couple drops of water. Place in freezer for a few minutes to firm up. In a large skillet over medium heat, heat oil (it should reach 1” up the side of pan) until it starts to bubble. Add egg rolls and fry until golden, 1 minute per side. Thai Chicken Skewers with Peanut Sauce

Executive Chef Dan Haywood, Anacapa Restaurant

Cooking and Plating Cucumber Salad Dressing for Skewers Peanut Sauce •

1 ½ Tbsp. Massaman curry Paste (pink Jar)

2 cups coconut milk

1 ¼ cup palm sugar, chopped

1 ½ tsp. salt

¼ cup cooking oil

1 ½ - 2 cups peanut butter

Preheat sauce pan. Add cooking oil. Sauté curry paste for a minute or two until well sautéed and then add coconut milk. Bring to simmer for a minute or two; add sugar and salt. Melt sugar completely in milk. When smooth, turn down heat and add peanut butter. Whisk until smooth and simmer for five minutes. Remove from heat and cool.

1 ¾ cup white sugar

¾ cup white vinegar

2 tsp salt

Bring all ingredients to a boil. Make sure sugar is dissolved. Refrigerate. Chill completely before using.

Cucumber Salad •

1 small cucumber, skinned, seeded and diced

Oil a hot grill. Place skewers on grill with the end of the skewer off the grill so it does not burn. Cook three to four minutes on each side until done. On a plate add peanut sauce to 4 ramekins, place on plate. Arrange one to two lettuce cups on plate with a cup of cucumber salad. Add three to four skewers onto the lettuce cups and serve immediately.

Thai Chicken Skewer Marinade •

2 cups coconut milk

½ cup sugar

2 Tbsp curry powder

¼ small red onion, thinly sliced

2-3 oz of prepared dressing

1 Tbsp salt

¼ sliced red pepper – optional

1 tsp garlic powder

Leaves of lettuce for garnish

2 Tbsp cilantro, chopped fine

2 Tbsp oil

Combine all ingredients. Let stand for fifteen to twenty minutes. Serve in small cup with chicken skewers on a bed of lettuce leaves.

18 | CB Times | The Official Community Magazine of Corte Bella

Combine all ingredients. Use 3-4 small boneless chicken breasts. Slice Chicken breasts in thin, long strips. When skewering, keep the chicken from bunching up on the skewers. One small 5 oz. breast makes three to four good size skewers. Allow chicken to marinate for minimum of three hours. (Overnight is best.)

CULINARY

Wine & Food: Uncorked Deborah Damery Lazear, CSW This issue will feature the white wines of Spring. In warmer weather, our tastes often turn to cool white wines. Not to say that a cool Rosé or slightly cool Beaujolais are not nice too. Let’s explore some favorite white grapes and some not so readily available but worth the hunt. The serving temperature of the wine is important. A too cold white wine, one that gets your glass frosty, will have almost no flavor at all. Remember also that “room temperature” is not Corte Bella temperature. A too warm wine will feel flabby in the mouth.

Here is a general guide: •

Pinot Grigio, Gerwürztraminer, Soave, Riesling, Champagne, Rosé: 50F to 55F

Chablis, Vouvray, Sauvignon Bland, Viognier, Pouilly Fuissé: 55F to 60F

Chardonnay oaked: 50F to 55F

Chardonnay unoaked: 55F to 60F

Prosecco, Cava: 50F to 55F

Most of us don’t have a wine thermometer, although that would be a nice gift (hint!) If you keep your white wine in the refrigerator, take it out for half an hour before you intend to serve it. An ice bucket will keep the wine cold, yet often too cold. An ice bath (ice cubes plus water) will cool down a just-purchased wine in about 20 minutes. Putting the wine in the freezer is not a good idea, especially if you forget about it! Bottom line, to keep the white wine cool on the patio, use more water than ice in your bucket. Or as some of my friends would say - “Drink faster!” Just kidding.

After: Deglazing the sauté pan or dutch oven of its favorable fond (brown bits on sides and bottom) with a good splash of wine will brighten the dish. Same applies to adding half a cup of wine to a finished braise to add freshness.

Wines of Spring and some fun pairings: •

Gewürztraminer and Unagi nigiri (eel sushi), lychee nut fruit salad, and chicken salad with walnuts.

Much of the Chardonnay out there is medium to heavy oak. As this does not make a good food pairing, with some exceptions, here are a few things you can do to balance the oak. Lactones in food tame oak. Examples are mushrooms, nuts, firm aged cheese, coconut, and apricots. Incorporate these ingredients into your dish. Remember that grilling, roasting or sautéing protein creates browning that yields rich lactones. To encourage browning, pat the protein dry with paper towels before grilling. The surface of the food will rise to 300 degrees Fahrenheit faster, which is the temperature required for browning to begin. Lower than that equals steaming.

Grüner Veltliner and asparagus tarragon, pink grapefruit salad, crab sushi roll, Brussels sprouts salad, grilled artichokes.

Albariño and almond raisin stuffed green chilies, grilled fish, crab soup, most tapas.

Arneis (aka little rascal) and crunchy fried shrimp with ginger dipping sauce, panzanella Tuscan bread salad.

Verdelho and goat cheese arugula quiche.

Vermentino and oysters on half shell, calamari, ceviche.

W.C. Fields said “I love to cook with wine. Sometimes I even put some in the food!”. When is the right time to add wine when cooking? Answer: Before, during and after.

Vouvray (Chenin Blanc) and grilled yellow fin tuna, fish and chips!

Viognier (pronounced vee on yay) and lychee stuffed with blue cheese, steamed clams with bacon parsnips, macadamia nut chicken with orange ginger sauce, butternut squash tamales Oaxacan style.

Before: A brief soak in 1/2 cup red wine and herbs will give the exterior of meat a head start to flavor. Be judicious as fifteen minutes will do it.

During: Adding red or white wine to a braising pot of meat and vegetables creates a flavorful environment for a slow cooked dish.

And then there are our “go-to” wines of Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay. How about we think outside the box this Spring?

COMMITTEE

Long-Term Planning Committee Update The CBCCA Long-Term Planning Committee The Long-Term Planning Committee (LTPC) has proceeded with the utmost consideration and caution in identifying a set of capital improvement projects that it feels will greatly benefit Corte Bella in the near and long-term. Serious thought and planning went into every stage of the process. The LTPC created a forecasting tool that compares projected revenue to estimated project costs and then plotted that data on a timeline. Based on that forecast, the first project – the renovation and enhancement of the Anacapa Restaurant – was due to begin in the Spring of 2022. However, due to recent action taken by the Board of Directors, the LTPC is now projecting a start date of the middle of 2020 for that project. What changed? Several things, the most important of which was that the Board decided to raise the home sale transfer fee from 50% of the annual assessment amount to 110% of that amount. This action required a change to the CC&Rs which required a majority vote of all Class A members, (one vote per household.) Although the voting period remains open until the end of Summer 2019, by the end of March the HOA was able to certify that over 880 votes in favor of granting the Board this authority had been recorded, greatly surpassing the required 826 votes needed to attain a simple majority, and sending a clear message of community support for the measure. Why 110%? The LTPC undertook an extensive data analysis

of similar fees charged by neighboring communities, including how these fees may or may not affect potential home buyers. The results of that study strongly supported setting the increase at the 110% level. Yet even at that rate, Corte Bella’s transfer fee ranks 7th out of 11 age-restricted communities in the West Valley and it is still well below the $2,343 average. At its March open meeting, the Board voted to raise the transfer fee from $936, (50% of the annual assessment), to $2,059, (110% of the annual assessment), per home sale. (Although many home sale closing costs are negotiable between the seller and the buyer, this fee, historically and traditionally, is paid by the buyer.) As stipulated in the CC&Rs, (§ 10.13 (c)), funds accrued from this fee are earmarked for capital improvement only. The new fee will go into effect on May 1st. The newly adjusted timeline puts the start date for the Anacapa project at July 2020, rather than in 2022. All other projects have likewise been advanced along the projected timeline. We wish to assure everyone that all members of the Board and all members of the LTPC take their fiduciary responsibility to the Corte Bella community very seriously. As always, the Board’s and the LTPC’s foremost concern is to enhance and preserve our community assets in a financially prudent, thoughtful and tasteful manner. To that end, they have carefully chosen projects that will provide the greatest long-term benefit to Corte Bella and, consequently, both are very excited about the positive benefits these enhancements will bring to our wonderful community.

Summary: February was favorable to budget with a $39,745 Net Surplus. Administration and Restaurant Nets were unfavorable by ($1,225) and ($259), respectively. All other departments were favorable primarily relating to Facilities Net ($18,995), due to less utilities; Guardhouse Net ($3,089) less gate repairs; and Landscape ($5,600) less planting. YTD results are favorable with Net Surplus to budget of $45,743. The only unfavorable department is Landscaping ($5,550) due to timing of pest control expense of $8,400 in January. Primary favorable departments YTD include Facilities Net ($29,294); Guardhouse ($4,105); and Landscape $5,500). Worth noting is the fact that the HOA Events, Restaurant,

and Spa results are favorable YTD with actual cash surpluses of $5,421, $11,025, and $8,262, respectively. Seeing a variance in YTD Restaurant Food results, the Finance Committee noted that the Restaurant 2018 Year End Food projections done in July of 2018 were over estimated by $55,000 as compared to YE 2018 Actual results. This will most likely result in 2019 year-end Restaurant Food revenues being unfavorable to budget. However, in spite of this 2019 budget shortfall, the YTD Restaurant Net is favorable to budget as outlined above.

Corte Bella Vets News Karen Starkman “SUCCESSFUL! TRIUMPHANT! VICTORIOUS! SENSATIONAL!” All of these words describe our second annual Corte Bella Vets Dance Fundraiser! The dance, with a little bit of comedy, event held on Saturday, April 6th was very well attended. Everyone enjoyed a wonderful evening of dancing, laughing, winning, drinking, snacking, and socializing. And the BEST PART is we raised $2,739. All of the funds raised will go a long way in helping veterans and fighting veteran homelessness. We thank everyone who helped to make this event a success. In particular, all of our attendees, donators, our DJ Keith Fowler and stand-up comedian Jon Wendt.

This month’s article features one of the transitional homes which we support. Project Veterans Pride’s (PVP) James Walton Home opened its doors on Veterans Day 9/11/2013 and since then they have admitted 655 homeless veterans. The James

Walton Home provides a 3060-90 day program which is designed to provide immediate food, clothing and shelter for up to twenty men at a time. Once an individual veteran’s crisis period is replaced with a sense of trust, they and a case manager develop an Individual Service Plan to identify barriers and determine solutions for obtaining housing and gainful employment. Even though no two veterans are the same and each comes with their own personal stories as to what led them to homelessness, they all have the same desire; and that is to regain a sense of purpose and well-being. They represent all branches of the military and range in age from twenty seven to age eighty three. The Corte Bella Vets, through the generous support of our community, have provided monetary donations as well as clothing and kitchen supplies to the James Walton Home. Subsequent issues of the CB Times will feature other organizations which the Corte Bella Vets have supported. On Tuesday, May 14th, Mr. Glenn Jordon will be the guest speaker at our regular monthly meeting beginning at 9:00 AM. Mr. Jordan is the Junior Commander of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Chapter 1. He will (among other topics) be discussing an adaptive sports program for disabled veterans which the Veterans’ Administration is unable to provide. All Corte Bella residents are welcomed to attend.

On Tuesday, March 7th, the Corte Bella Vets presented a beautiful framed picture and plaque of Pat Tillman to the Pat Tillman Foundation. Ken Salmon and Louise Avila, School Certifying Specialists at ASU, were very honored and excited when presented with this framed work of art. They both indicated that the picture of Pat captured his energy, patriotism, and hardworking ethics. It will be honorably displayed at the Pat Tillman Foundation Museum/Library located at the ASU Thunderbird campus.

Corte Bella Adventure Group Steve Downing There is not a bad hike in Sedona. With that being said, one of my favorite Sedona hikes is from Soldiers Pass to Brin’s Mesa. This is a loop trail winding through the Red Rock Secret Mountain Wilderness. With only 800 plus feet of elevation and approximately five miles in length, this is a wonderful moderate hike. Starting at the Jordan Road Trailhead, we took the loop trail clockwise along Cibola Pass connecting to the Jordan Trail where our first stop was Devil’s Kitchen. Devil’s Kitchen is an impressive sinkhole as viewed in the photo. For those interested in further information about Devil’s Kitchen, there is an article written by Paul A. Lindberg, consulting geologist, titled “A Potential Geohazard.” Next stop was Seven Sacred Pools, a series of shallow ponds cut from the sandstone canyon. These pools usually hold water from recent rains and can act like a mirror reflecting the blue Arizona skies. This is the last place you can visit on a pink jeep tour. From the pools onward, the views can only be seen by those willing to hike to the top of the mesa. On the way up, you will see the arches off to the right which have formed at the western edge of the mesa. The CB Times cover photo for this issue is at the top of Brin’s mesa, where we are standing on the edge prior to making our way down a rather steep trail and back to the waiting vehicles. Directions to the trailhead: From the Routet 179/89A traffic circle, proceed to the right and turn left at the second intersection, which is Jordan Road. Stay on Jordan Road till the road “T’s” and make a left. Continue on Jordan Road, which will turn to dirt and stone where it ends at the trailhead. Devils Kitchen

SOuL (Smiling Out Loud) News Linda Wright, SOuL member SOuL has accomplished much in the months of March and April. This Corte Bella women’s charity support group keeps breaking new ground and moving forward in exciting and inspiring ways. SOuL received a special recognition award from the Sun Cities Salvation Army Corps at their annual volunteer recognition luncheon held at their Surprise facility on March 27th. SOuL President Carla Smith was called by Salvation Army Captain Kathy Merritt to the stage to reveal the plaque that honors the funding donation of 100 new dining chairs by SOuL. This plaque will hang in the facility’s dining room.

Sun Cities Salvation Army Corps Captain Kathy Merritt shows SOuL President Carla Smith the plaque (honoring SOuL’s purchase of 100 dinning chairs) that will hang in the facility’s dining room. Also in March, SOuL donated $2,000 to the West Valley Food Bank to help with a critical need by that organization to restock their shelves with food for the truly needy in the Northwest Valley. SOuL staged its third annual SOuL Sisters’ Attic rummage sale and SOuL Cafe on Sunday, April 7th. The community support for this fund raising event was phenomenal in every way and inspiring to each of our members. Thank you, Corte Bella! Thank you for your wonderful and plentiful donations (recycling at its very best!), your purchases at the sale, your support to our café and for purchasing tickets for our 50/50 raffle. SOuL is so pleased that you enjoyed having a cup of coffee or tea on the patio with

SOuL is delighted to announce that $4,745.70 was raised from the Sisters’ Attic this year! (see photo) Thank you to the Corte Bella HOA for their unending support and assistance to our Attic sale. The HOA Events staff and facilities staff that set up the room and helped with all the logistics were unbelievable in their assistance. Thank you Chris Bower, John Bower and Eric Quinterro. You are all three a credit to First Service Residential and to the Corte Bella HOA management team. SOuL gives a huge shout out to Anacapa Executive Chef Dan Haywood, Food and Beverage Manager Jill Machay and her assistant Cherie Holloway for their help with the coffee and tea service for our SOuL Café. Your continued support and generosity are so appreciated. SOuL meets the third Thursday of each month in the Bella Stanza room at 10:30 AM. All the women of Corte Bella are welcome to join us and we would love to have you think about joining our group. Drop Toppers Trip to Amazon Fulfillment Center Nancy Wendler The Drop Toppers headed to the Amazon Fulfillment Center on Monday, March 4th for a one hour guided tour of the facility. The building is the equivalent of twenty eight football fields, and the average purchase travels more than six miles of overhead tracks before it is loaded onto a delivery truck. After the tour, we lunched at a pizza restaurant in Westgate Mall. Drop Toppers is open to all residents who drive a convertible. We take day trips to places of interest around the Valley. Our next trip is lakeside lunch followed by a sightseeing boat tour of Saguaro Lake on Monday, April 15th. All correspondence for the club now goes through Droptoppers@ cox.net. Cleaning Up El Mirage Road Linda Wright

Volunteers Doing the Hard Stuff There is a group of volunteers right here in Corte Bella who believe in putting in some hours doing not so glamorous work out there on El Mirage Road (from the SR 303 entrance to the traffic light at Wescott Drive – which is 3.19 miles in each direction.) The Northwest Valley Volunteers is made up of Corte Bella residents. Dave and Linda Wright coordinate the group under the Maricopa County Department of Transportation’s Adopt a Highway program. Tom Mauger, Keith Conners and Roger Kleinshmidt will get the job done. On Friday, March 29th in the early morning hours, ten volunteers collected thirty one bags of litter during three and half hours of work. Jim Lolley, Roger Kleinschmidt, Paula Penkauskas, Tom Mauger, Gerry Berger, Steve Hurst, Jo Anne Hurst, Keith Connors, Dave and Linda Wright were involved in this cleanup effort. There are a number of other loyal volunteers that were unable to participate this time but who are active in our group: Tom Asmussen, Burnhill Clark, Gary Elwanger, Max Hinerman, Danny and Janey Martin.

Steve and Jo Anne Hurst on the job. The county permit issued to our group mandates two times a year for litter removal on our designated area. Equipment for this work is provided by MCDOT to include litter disposal bags, gloves, sunglasses, metal “grabbers”, safety vests, foldup large safety signs and safety instructions for all volunteers. Our litter removal is confined to the side of the road (not the median) from the edge of the paved shoulder to the natural boundary of the road on each side. Gerry Berger was ready to rock and roll early Friday morning.

Jim Lolley and Paula Penkauskas are ready to work. If you’re interested in joining the Northwest Valley Volunteers and our efforts to keep El Mirage Road free of litter, please contact Dave or Linda Wright at trgibe@aol.com. We’ll make sure you receive announcements regarding our next road cleanup (tentatively in early October)and the required safety information/training. Its rewarding when folks on bicycles and in their cars let us know that they appreciate what we are doing to keep that road we all travel each day free of debris and litter. The sign on El Mirage Road.

A Special Thank You Larry Leighton At the March Corte Bella Vets meeting, I recognized and thanked five members of our organization who have been instrumental in forming and keeping Corte Bella Vets operational and continually improving. I’d like to share that thanks with the whole Corte Bella community. Donna Norton was our first secretary. She then chaired our Sunshine and Entertainment Committees. Donna organizes and heads our annual clothing drives and handles the administrative requirements of our silent auctions during the annual golf tournament. Jim Starkman was our first director of charities and continues to serve in that capacity today. He is responsible for vetting the various charitable organizations we support to ensure the funds donated to them stay in Arizona, are used for veterans and veteran families, and that their overhead is 15% or less. Jim is always ready to lend a hand in all of our activities. Dale Huffman is our treasurer. As you would expect, he tracks all incoming and outgoing funds, balances the books, and makes sure our relationship with the IRS allows us to keep our nonprofit, charitable organization status.

While all of us in the Corte Bella Vets are volunteers and ready to help and serve when called upon, these five members have my special thanks. Our group would not be where we are today without their support, and the support of their families. Each of them has received our Corte Bella Vets “Coin of Excellence” (Tom was not at the meeting so he will get his at our next meeting.) When you see these folks, let them know we all appreciate their service to the nation and to our community.

Karen Starkman took over from Donna as our secretary. She does an excellent job of not only keeping the meeting minutes but also coordinates and publishes the meeting agendas for both the executive and membership meetings. Not content with that, she took on the additional responsibility for organizing and handling our annual fund raising dance. Jim and Karen are also responsible for the Annual Christmas Tree for Veterans, a program formerly managed by members of the Sun Dome Plaza Merchants Association. Had they not stepped up to manage the program, it might have stopped. Last year alone, over $25,000 worth of gifts donated by Sun City West residents were collected and delivered to various Arizona veteran homes and formerly homeless veterans transitional housing organizations. Tom Asmussen has been our director of fund raising since Corte Bella Vets was formed. Additionally, he almost single handedly organized our first golf tournament. Through his personal drive and efforts, funds raised through the golf tournament alone have grown from $15,000 that first year to over $30,000 in the last two years. Tom also organized business “Give Back to Veterans” programs with multiple businesses in the Northwest Valley.

Pruning Shrubs for Healthy Plants Shirley Williams I have covered in the past CB Times issues about pruning your trees and fertilizing. This month, we will discuss pruning your shrubs. Pruning needs vary from one plant to the next. It’s done only when necessary to remove damaged, diseased or dying branches; to control size and to rejuvenate old plants. However, some people prefer a formal hedge or sculptured plants, which require shearing the plant. Pruning should be done at the right time of the year. You’ve probably noticed that after our frost the plants needed to be pruned in March to remove the damaged stems and leaves. Plants, such as lantana, can be trimmed to twelve inches or less at this time. Others, such as oleanders, are pruned after flowering. Pruning should be done with sharp hand trimmers or loppers for larger limbs. It is recommended to follow the natural growth pattern of the plant. Selective thinning opens the plant to allow more light and air movement (see illustration below.) Frequently shearing shrubs (to have a formal hedge or sculptured look) destroys the natural growth pattern, leads to loss of leaves (except for a thin layer at the tips of the branches) and limits the plant’s ability to produce their own food. You may notice bare spots occurring in different areas.

Rejuvenating or renovating older or very large shrubs can be done every few years depending on the kind of plant. One method is to cut all the stems to twelve to eighteen inches above the ground. A less severe method is to remove half or more of the branches at the base of the plant. Remember to consult a reputed source to make sure the plant can be pruned like this and how often. For example, rosemary shrubs do not tolerate this kind of pruning. There are various ways to find out when and how your plant should be pruned. Check out extension.Arizona.edu/MaricopaMG AZ Pub 1499. I’ve just googled how to prune a specific plant such as Oleander and came up with great information. Check out youtube.com or gardeningknowhow.com. (Source extension.Arizona.edu/MaricopaMG AZ Pub 1499.)

Jason Love Comedy Show

Paint Your Own Wine Glass Art Class

March 15

March 20

As is the norm, this particular comedy show that played to a standing room only crowd did not disappoint. Attendees stated that their abdomens were sore the next morning from laughing so hard. Jason Love always bring it to Corte Bella. Thank you for the laughs and the clean comedy.

Corte Bella residents channeled their inner artist while they created a special wine glass for their home collection. There were all kinds of colors and designs. These classes are so much fun and bring a real different kind of experience to our residents.

Anacapa’s St. Patrick’s Day Celebration March 17 Irish eyes were smiling wide on this celebratory event. The food was outstanding and the selection pleased everyone who came out with the “wearing of the green.” Great value for great food and service – thank you so much to everyone at the Anacapa, especially Executive Chef Day Haywood, the master of the buffet!

Spring Training Game at Goodyear Park March 18 It was a glorious sunny day at the ballpark in Goodyear where Corte Bella residents took in the Cleveland Indians vs. the San Diego Padres Spring Training game. Everyone loved the VIP Terrace with the delicious “all you can eat” buffet and personal bartender. After the game finished, our group did the “Senior Stroll Around the Bases!” What a great day it was for all.

Corte Bella at the Races! A Day at Turf Paradise March 25 It was the annual trip by Corte Bella to the race track at Turf Paradise and twenty nine residents had a wonderful full day at the track. The meal and the drinks were first class and several of the attendees had very good luck with their betting! The second race was named in honor of Corte Bella and ten CB folks were trackside to watch the race and then at the winner’s circle to greet the winning horse and jockey. This is always great fun every year!

Cooking with Chef Dan April 5

High Tide – A Tribute to the Beach Boys

Chef Dan once again had his audience in the palm of his hand while he created a wonderful lunch for everyone who attended this cooking demonstration. Chef prepared Thai Chicken Skewers, Pork Pot Stickers, several types of Simple Sushi and Cheesecake Eggrolls with Mango and Strawberry for desert. These monthly cooking demonstrations are always filled with learning and good eating… everyone’s favorite pastimes!

March 26 Beach music, surf melodies and lots of memories from our youth – that was the recurring theme of this tribute concert from TAD management. The Corte Bella Santa Barbara room was filled to the doors with residents clapping, singing along and remembering the good old days of music. The vocals and the live instrumental entertainment during the ninety minute concert was such exceptional value. Thank you for the trip down memory lane.

AZ Diamondback vs Boston Red Socks Baseball April 5 Opening day at Chase Field had the Corte Bella group joining a sold out crowd at the game between the D’backs and the Boston Red Socks. It was a slugfest with a total of 23 runs scored and 30 some total hits by both teams. The end result had the D’back fans very pleased and the Red Sock fans scratching their heads. It was a great night.

Volunteer Recognition Night April 8

Murder Mystery Dinner Theater March 30 The Santa Barbara room was transformed into a Roaring Twenties Speakeasy and the Corte Bella residents in attendance dressed the part in exceptional style. There were flappers, “wanna-be” gangsters, dandy ladies and dapper dudes galore. The dinner buffet was delicious and the murder mystery interactive theater required the attendees to think, distrust each other and solve the mystery. It was something different for Corte Bell and an unique experience.

This annual HOA event was very special with great decorations and a wonderful buffet dinner. All those in attendance were thanked for their service to our community in support of the HOA in many different and important ways. More than 150 volunteers and their spouses/guests enjoyed this event.

Corte Bella Tennis Club News MaryLee Planer

The Corte Bella league teams have completed their seasons which run from fall until the end of February. Dave Culley captains the men’s (mostly) 4.0 Team with Corte Bella residents Arthur Bartlett, Don Schneider and Ken Moberg. They placed second in their league and were beaten in the playoffs by the eventual champion Sun City Grand. There are three Corte Bella teams in the West Valley Women’s Tennis League, which transitioned to new leadership this season after more than thirty years. The teams play on Fridays against other area retirement communities including Pebble Creek, Happy Trails, Sun City Grand, Westbrook Village, Sun City and Trilogy; although not all have teams at every level. Donna Norton serves as captain of the 4.0 team, which finished in second place. Members of the Bellas 3.5 team finished the season strong, placing third and winning thirty of their matches. Corte Bella players on the 3.0 Wildflowers team include Sara Cranston, Mamie Roberts, Insoon Park, Feemie Gratian, Gayle Backes, Lyn Linder, Co-Captain, MJ Schneider and Captain, MaryLee Planer. The team is building, and with the help of Donna Norton’s weekly clinics, improved its record over last season. Corte Bella women are needed on both the 4.0 and 3.0 teams.

The 8:00 AM Wednesday clinics continue to be a terrific opportunity for new and returning players. All aspects of the game are covered, and some players have already gained enough

skills and confidence to play in the drop-in sessions on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. These free clinics will be on hiatus from mid-May until September.

No CB Tennis Club Report would be complete without addressing the other recurring theme — good food — which was featured at the St. Patrick’s Day Social “Welcome to Tennis” Cookout with instruction by pro Jason Jamison and the Happy Hour Social on the Anacapa back patio.

Our dues are just $15 annually, and our membership is the perfect size for combining physical activity with the opportunity to get to know each other well. See you on the courts!

Corte Bella Golf Club News Debbie Parks-Dube

It’s hard to believe that it’s May! Another busy season at the golf club is over. It was a really fun season that went by so fast. Since things are winding down, we are offering a special for the Month of May. Corte Bella Residents can play for $45.00 after 10:00 AM and $35.00 after 12:00 Noon. Along with play slowing down at the Golf Club comes the heat! Make sure you are drinking enough water and that you start drinking water before you head outside for any events. The heat can really sneak up on you and you can be in trouble before you realize it. Also watch out for snakes when you are trimming your

bushes or just out in the neighborhood in general. There were Rattlesnakes seen on the golf course in April. It never hurts to be too cautious! As always, our Golf shop is open for your Corte Bella merchandise. Our golf professionals can give you a lesson or a group of lessons to improve your golf game or to just get you started in the game. Our Grill is open for a meal and a beverage while you watch a game on one of our many televisions around the club. Contact me for great membership deals over the summer!

Teaching at Mountain Ridge High School Class

WE GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY Member Diane Baumgartner arranged for some of our club players to introduce Mountain Ridge High School students to the game of Pickleball. On April 1st and April 8th, volunteer instructors Diane Baumgartner, Betty McClain, Fred Greenberg, Ron Johnson, Mark Harrison, Dusty Johnson, and Lee Debban took on three classes with approximately forty students each. That’s 120 future superstars! Not sure who had more fun - the students or our volunteers. (See photo.)

WE HAVE GREAT PLAYERS! From mid-October to mid-April, representatives from our club played in twenty tournaments – at the local, regional, and national level. I don’t have the exact statistic, but our club members have to be one of the most successful of any group around! The haul was 129 total medals, with twenty two players winning one or more medals. Congratulations to all our winners!

WE LIKE TO PARTY On March 24th, we enjoyed our annual season-end party out on the lanai. Over 100 members and guests attended. We kept all eight pickleball courts full and feasted on pulled pork and chicken, plus fabulous side dishes brought in by our club members. (See photos.)
