ASSOCIATION
Grateful, In the Time of Challenge I’m writing this article on April 9th, 2020. The Corte Bella Annual Meeting was conducted just about a month ago. The general message at that meeting was all positive and so much good news was delivered. The association was financially sound, in excellent health and the community was anticipating expanding facilities.
It has been very hard. Everyone is feeling some discomfort at some level and some more than others. I have seen some real acts of kindness and some other acts that really don’t deserve to be mentioned. To top it all off, the Corte Bella demographic of homeowners have been identified as the most susceptible and those who will be harmed the most including possible death in some cases. The bottom line is that this disease has turned the world upside down and has no conscience.
That said, I am fortunate and grateful that Corte Bella was my responsibility at the time of all of this. You are truly some of the best people in the world and I am certain that this whole thing would have been much harder for me, my staff and each of you in most other communities. “When times are tough, the tough get going”, I think someone once said. That has been true in Corte Bella and I am betting today that it will continue to be true by the time this article gets to you. I am betting that Corte Bella pulled together and helped each other through until now and depended on each other when it was time to do the right thing.
Mike Arrington, General Manager
At that time, most everything was pretty much “fun in the Sun” at Corte Bella. I bragged about how qualified and awesome our staff was and how long some had been working for Corte Bella. Many of them had over 15 years of service and many others were over 10 years. On April 1, we had 56 employees. One week later, we were down to just 15 employees following the layoffs of 41 of our associates and team mates; even though the board and community treated them like gold for as long as they could. Our staff was so grateful for how the board treated and considered us all. At the time of this article, all of our facilities have been closed for nearly a month, except for the Anacapa curb service which opened on April 7th. The stock market is diving and people are losing their businesses. There are no events or activity, no Pickle Ball, no Tennis, no Swimming Pool, Bocce or working out in the Fitness Center, no spa visits or happy hour at the Anacapa. Golf is questionable at this point with courses closing all around us. The Governor has issued a stay at home order and modified that once already. All restaurants have been reduced to curb service or delivery only and all there seems to be to do is walk outside and even that is questionable. However, most folks are making the most of it and our canine friends are ecstatic because their existence just got exponentially better. Each one now believes they are “Dog of the year”. Oh how quickly life can change without notice and we realize just how much is out of our control. We have all seen just how fragile our lives and psyche can be. Some are handling it very well while others not so much.
Today, no one really knows where this is going to go for sure, but I bet that I am right now while I am writing this article and that Corte Bella has shined through what was and maybe still is a very tough time for all. By the time you read this, I hope that everyone is living well and enjoying their lives again by doing all of the things that make them special. I hope that staff is returning to work and able to serve you again as before. Most of all, I hope that we all have learned something valuable and that we are all better than before as we become whole again. Right now, I am playing a game with myself every night and that is to search for silver linings in the midst of this emergency and national crisis. I have found many “silver linings” so far and I intend to put them to use moving forward. One thing is for sure, I know I will be right about the tremendous character of Corte Bellans when I wrote this article and where I thought we would be today as you are reading it. You are a community of exceptional human beings and you were made for these times.
From the Editor’s Desk Linda Wright It’s the end of Spring and the beginning of Summer in Corte Bella. This Spring has been one that brought many challenges and difficulties to each of us and to our association from almost every aspect and direction. All of this because of one nasty, microscopic virus! Looking forward to when this situation changes and life, here within our community and beyond, improves and normalizes is everyone’s focus. During the months prior to this CB Times issue, so many of our residents walked the “circle” daily, rode
their bikes around the community and practiced varied kinds of “social distancing” interactions. Residents checked on each other, assisted where needed and constantly stayed in communication with all those around their neighborhood and beyond. As one new resident expressed it “I feel very safe here in Corte Bella.” There is great comfort in being in a “small” community and one where people are engaged and helpful. May the generosity of spirit and empathy last long after this virus is wiped out. Peace and health to all who live in this beautiful place.

The 2020-2021 Corte Bella Country Club Association (CBCCA) Board of Directors The Organizational Meeting of the CBCCA Board of Directors held on March 30th saw the certification of two new Board members, Catherine Kelly and Dave Thomas, who will each serve a two year term which will expire in 2022. Board Director Dave Saulnier was re-elected for another two year term also through 2022. These three Directors join Kathy Carmickle, Debra Raeder-Gay, Steve Michaud and Linda Wright to compose the full Board. At the meeting, Board officer positions were voted on and committee liaison responsibilities were assigned. The meeting was open to the membership via ZOOM due to mandatory restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Feedback regarding the functionality of the technology was very favorable for both audio and video. Corte Bella wishes the newly constituted board of directors all the best as they manage the affairs of our community and send our collective thanks to all seven board directors for their efforts on our behalf.

Proposed Recycling and Waste Transfer Station – What You Can Do From Debra Raeder-Gay, Board of Director’s GAC Liaison And Duane Yantorno, GAC Chair Many of you may have noticed a public notice posting at 115th Avenue and Happy Valley Road regarding a “Zone Change with Overlay Request and Public Hearings.” This Public Notice is related to a request to re-zone five acres from a “Rural Zoning District” (one dwelling per Unit) to “Heavy Industrial Zoning District Industrial Plan of Development” to allow for the construction of a recycling and waste transfer station. While gathering information regarding this re-zoning request on behalf of the HOA’s Government Affairs Committee (GAC), it became immediately apparent that Corte Bella residents need to be informed about the concerns and issues that could result if the request were approved: increased truck traffic on the 303, additional congestion at the Happy Valley Road exit, and anticipated odor issues. The process has just started and the Maricopa County Planning & Zoning Department indicates the applicant is in the very early phases of the application process. A Technical Committee review will be held on the application in April; however, no public comment will be heard at this review as the purpose is for all related state and county departments to address the application and opine on regulatory issues. No date for a public meeting has been scheduled at this time. It is anticipated that the process could take anywhere from four months to a year to complete. However, a public meeting that includes public comment must be held prior to any action being taken in this regard.
So what can you do now? •
You can voice your opinion with County Supervisor Clint Hickman at chickman@mail.maricopa.gov or call 602-506-7642;
•
You can sign a petition in opposition at: https://www.ipetitions.com/petition/waste-transferstation-project-z2020017.
•
You can email your opposition to the Maricopa County Planning & Zoning Department at: pdplanner@mail.maricopa.gov.
•
You can send a letter to: Maricopa County Planning & Zoning Department, 501 N. 44th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85003.
•
You can contact the applicant directly for more information at: cgriemsmann@gblaw.com.
•
You can make your friends and neighbors aware of the request and have them take action.
Please note that multiple emails or letters from a singular person count only once. But as previously noted, there are multiple things you can do if you feel strongly about this issue: contact Supervisor Hickman; sign the petition on the link provided; send either a letter or email; and/or alert your friends and neighbors to do the same. The GAC will aggressively monitor the activities of this zoning request and keep the HOA updated on future actions or upcoming meetings. Please monitor the Corte Bella website for updated information.

CULINARY
Taste Where You Travel, Part Two Deborah Damery Lazear, CSW
Tango, Torrontés, Tannat: Argentina At the time of writing this article, travel to Argentina or anywhere else is out of the question. We can, however, explore the country’s wine. Most wine stores will offer a pick-up order and I plan to take advantage of that! Argentina’s first vineyards were planted in 1532 by the Spanish. When their rule ended in 1820, Argentina was a haven for immigrants, many from Italy. Their cuttings of familiar Italian grapes are still planted today. The French followed in the mid19th century, escaping phylloxera and bringing the first Malbec cuttings with them. The soil is predominately clay, sand and gravel. The rainfall is low, less than 10 inches per year, except near the Andes mountains where snow melt run-off provides abundant water for irrigation. Originally using flood irrigation and allowing the vines to drink as much as they wanted, the resulting wines were somewhat lack luster. Currently the drip system is used and the vineyard manager can control the water flow to the vines. Quality today is high and the price is primarily competitive. Approximately 60% of the wine production is red, with white and sparkling following behind. Champagne houses such as Moët, Piper-Heidsieck and Mumm are all involved. Mendoza is the most important wine region. Malbec, its most well known grape, is low in tannin so is frequently blended with some Cabernet Sauvignon for balance. Look for aromas of violets and
a flavor of truffles and black plums. After 4-5 years, most Malbecs turn orange at the rim of the glass and can become gamey with a dry after-taste. Drink young. Other important grapes are Bonarda, Nebbiolo, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot. Within Mendoza lies the Uco Valley. It is a cooler region with alluvial sandy loam soil and rounded pebbles. This is the most talked about region for high quality wines in Argentina. Look for more acidity in the Malbec, less jam, with flavors of anise and red plums. San Juan, north of Mendoza, grows Bonarda, Tempranillo, Sangiovese and Dolcetto. It is hot and dry and best suited to every day wines. La Rioja is extremely warm and dry. Torrontés is the white grape of choice. If you are getting bored with Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc, try Torrontés. It has a balance of fruit and acidity that makes it a great sipper or a good food pairing partner. Salta is the northernmost area of Argentina’s four major wine producing regions. The climate is tropical with elevations of 9,860 feet above sea level lending cooler sites. Grapes are Torrontés, Tannat, Malbec with some good Cabernet Sauvignon. Donald Hess (of California fame) is a Swiss winemaker with a large presence in Salta marked by Columé, his cult wine. Patagonia is in the south; wind-lashed and scrub desert. Climate is dry with long sunshine hours. Cool wind from the Antarctic keep the natural acidity in its Malbec, Merlot and Pinot Noir. Lots of exciting wines to try alongside your chimichurri sauced steak!

century by making it fully functional across all (currently) known devices. This provided site access from all mobile smart phones and tablets. These changes were not seamless and required some training on the part of many users. That’s simply one of the costs of progress and technological advances. The primary difference between the desktop version and the mobile versions is in how the main menu tabs are accessed. In the desktop version, nothing has changed. The main menu tabs are arranged in two rows across the top of each page. In the mobile (smart phone and tablet) version, things are a little different. First of all, the device must be in “portrait” orientation. That simply means that the device needs to be oriented with the “short” side at the top. (portrait orientation for smart phones and tablets) When in “landscape” orientation, the device looks for the “desktop” version which results in many of the main menu tabs not showing up on the screen. So, with the device in “portrait” orientation, you will see a menu button (three parallel lines) at the far right of the screen.
The website has undergone several facelifts and other technical changes over the years. In July 2017, it underwent a complete redesign which resulted in the current look and feel. In February of this year (2020), we nudged it a little further into the 21st

When you touch this button the full main menu appears,
The circle with a + indicates that there are sub-menus. Tap the + to bring up the submenus and then simply tap on whichever sub-menu you wish to view. And welcome to the 21st century! As we mentioned above, progress does not come without problems. There is an assortment of web browsers available to the public. Each browser operates with its own, unique settings. And each has presented a “login” problem as they have tweaked their security and other settings. A short while ago Google Chrome would not allow users to log onto the website. That issue has been resolved. Currently, however, there is a problem with Microsoft Edge. The technical support staff is aware of that issue and is working to resolve it. (It may already be resolved by the time you read this.) The takeaway here is that if you have a problem logging into the Corte Bella website with a specific browser, you should try logging in with a different one. The interruption will be temporary as the technical staff works to provide solutions to these and other problems as they crop up. Please enjoy the many features of the website and submit all comments and recommendations to communication@ cortebellacca.com.

Corte Bella Vets Happenings Karen R. Starkman The Corte Bella Vets send our prayers and best wishes to everyone during these most challenging times as we continue with our social distancing, the closure of so many local business and changes to local operations due to the COVID-19 virus. We continue to work closely with the Surprise VA Clinic and have recently provided direct financial assistance to several veterans throughout the West Valley. Due to the COVID-19 virus, the Phoenix VA Regional Office has taken safeguards by temporarily closing their offices to the public. They are continuing to process claims but are not accepting in-person visits for claims assistance, vocational rehabilitation counseling, or other services except through telephone or for vocational rehabilitation, and VA Video Connect. The VA’s official information bulletins, including regional operations, are posted at www.va.gov.
In addition, all 142 Nationwide VA National Cemeteries are continuing to adjust their services considering the best practices urged by the CDC. The National Cemetery Scheduling Office in St. Louis, MO. will continue to provide scheduling services for the duration of this current pandemic. To schedule a burial, please call 1-800-5535-1117 and chose option 1. In closing, we are reminded of Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s speech to the Corps of Cadets at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point on May 12, 1962: “Duty, Honor, Country – those three hollowed words reverently dictate what you ought to be, what you can be, what you will be. They are your rallying point to build courage when courage seems to fail, to regain faith when there seems to be little cause for faith, to create hope when hope is forlorn”. Throughout this challenging time in our nation’s history, please stop to thank a veteran, pray for our First Responders and their families, for all actively deployed military personal and for one another. Be well, our cherished Corte Bella Community!
The Dysart Community Center High School Diploma Program Stacey McEnnan We all know of someone whose life did not go as planned. For whatever reason, many people in our greater community find that this is true for them. They were unable to complete their courses of study for a high school diploma and now find themselves unable to reach any goals they might have had as a young person. They also find that there are very few programs which will help them in the acquisition of affordable education and employment. Where can they go for help? The Dysart Community Center in El Mirage is now a location at which students of any age can get help toward their goals. The center offers, not only a General Education Diploma (GED) program, but a high school diploma program as well. Many other sites offer GED programs, and people over the age of 18 are told that they must pursue this avenue for further education. However, many employers prefer high school diploma credentials. The Dysart diploma option was started last fall through the accredited independent study program offered by The Alexandria Academy. Started in 1988, the academy began in California and now has students in many states. Dysart is one of only a few of its on-site programs. It offers students intensive practice in English and mathematics, as well as mini-lessons in a vast array of other topics from astronomy to languages. The students at Dysart all
had to drop out of high school for various reasons before being able to graduate. Many come to the program with high school credits already earned and have only the equivalent of one or two years to accomplish before graduation. The Dysart Community Center relies heavily, because of financial challenges, on volunteer participation, and the high school program is no exception. Volunteers with a variety of backgrounds are needed. No special requirements are necessary except for the desire to share some special knowledge with adult students. So, if you have any experience with a topic from world history to race cars, your knowledge is needed. Volunteers can give one session of one hour or devote time to an on-going “course.” The commitment is up to the volunteer. I will say, however, that some people have signed up to do one lesson and have stayed on to do multiple hours of service because of the personal rewards they find at the Dysart Community Center. Please contact Dr. Stacey Mcennan via email at smcennan@gmail.com if you’re interested in volunteering. Addendum to this article: One Corte Bella resident, Russ Harris, is currently volunteering every Monday morning teaching classes of American and World History. Additionally, he has given presentations on United States law and legal matters. Dr. Mcennan states his efforts have been a “God-send” to the program.

SOuL Contributes Even In The Time Of COVID-19 Linda Wright, SOuL member With the necessary cancellation of the April annual SOuL Sisters’ Attic rummage sale, the organization found itself with an abundance of donated sale items (from accessories to small furnishings) from the many generous residents of Corte Bella. SOuL (Smiling Out Loud) decided to donate all the collected “treasures” to the Valley View Food Bank for their Thrift and
Gift Store operation. Three thrift stores in the Northwest Valley directly benefit the food bank’s work to help feed the needy in the valley. Those thrift shops are located at 10737 W. Peoria Avenue in Sun City; 3576 W. Camino del Sol Suite 6 in Sun City West; and 12321 W. Grand Avenue in El Mirage. SOuL’s Vice President Carol Courter and President Carla Smith oversaw the pickup of those collected goods from a number of homes in Corte Bella where members had gathered and stored all the donations. (As you can see in the photo, the appropriate social distancing was observed at all times.) SOuL sincerely thanks all of the wonderful Corte Bella residents who supported our efforts with donations for our attic sale. Your continued appreciation of our efforts to help others is so important to us all. Thank you.
How the COVID-19 Stay-At-Home Directive Affected Me From a CB Sidewalk Walker In the near future, we will all be able to reflect on the disruptions of this Spring with a perspective that will bring closure to this chapter. Just think about this: 1. Not being able to shop for household and grocery items in a rational manner – Who knew toilet paper, hand soap and sanitizer, paper towels, flour and bottled water were things people needed in bulk? Where do folks store all this stuff? 2. Having to keep six feet distance from everyone you encounter - When you meet someone on the “Circle” walking their dog, it’s hard to avoid that friendly animal. How do you politely explain that the dog is welcome into your personal safe space and they are not? 3. Planning every trip out from your shelter-in-place location to do errands and get supplies - You have to keep your hands clean and your face covered when out in the general public. There’s no faster way to clear a space than to have someone cough or sneeze.
4. Missing events and occasions due to inability to travel or cancelled activities – Our eldest grandson is a high school senior. No senior prom, no graduation ceremony or a senior trip. The death of a beloved relative in another state meant no funeral and no grieving with siblings.
5. Isolation is difficult for those who are extroverted and rely on human connection – It’s been hard to not get to our church services and to do our volunteer work. We miss Anacapa Happy Hours, the HOA dances, dinners, shows and trips that have enriched our lives for the past thirteen years. We know this will change. We need to have patience (definitely not our forte). 6. Knowing that persons close to us will suffer financial and other problems due to this pandemic - The worry, concern and frustration regarding the economic ramifications keep us up at night and disturb our sleep when it does come. This has created tension between us and others that is hard to manage. We didn’t make cotton face masks or grow a garden. We stayed focused, positive, and hopeful. When we see you on the “Circle,” we hope for smile, a friendly greeting, and that we can pet your dog.

Corte Bella HOA Donates Jelly Beans To Salvation Army’s Sack Meals Linda Wright With the cancellation of the annual children’s Easter Egg Hunt (due to the closure of our facilities and events due to the COVID19 virus) the Association’s Lifestyle Manager, Pam Lawrence found herself with sixty five pounds of jelly beans on hand. That particular candy does not store well and can’t be kept for a prolonged time. However, the Salvation Army Sun Cities Corps Headquarters here in our “neighborhood” began its free hot breakfast and sack lunch drive-up service on March 19th. The entire jelly bean supply was given to a very grateful Salvation Army. Captain Kathy Merritt said that the Corte Bella jelly beans would be placed in plastic Easter Eggs that had also been donated. She was certain that the many sack meal recipients would be very grateful for this delicious treat. Captain Kathy was very grateful for this unexpected donation. As of April 4th, Captain Kathy reported that 3,124 total meals have been given out by the facility located in Surprise along with 500 food boxes and 250 rolls of toilet paper. Those jelly beans surely brought joy to many.

Fertilize palms (2nd of the 4th time for the year). Fertilize citrus. Check watering schedule for 90º - 100º; water more frequently, not longer. Increase the skip days. Plant new palms. Prune shrubs after flowering has finished. Prune crossed and rubbing branches of Palo Verde trees. Pinch back herbs to discourage flowering. Check plants and trees stakes for failure. Treat bilge bug (hook snout beetle) around Agave. Watch trees during summer dormant season; prune water sprouts, suckers, rubbing branches; break, don’t cut, base ground suckers (e.g. oleander trees). Fertilize roses half strength; check for aphids. Fertilize flower pots every three weeks.

Check watering system; manually turn on one cycle at a time and check drips and emitters. Pull out petunias; plant vinca in new soil. Feed succulents half strength once a month. Hose off roses and cypress trees to prevent spider mites. Pinch off rose buds when they are the size of a pea; don’t allow buds to grow. Leave lots of foliage on roses to protect against sunburn. Fertilize roses half strength. Fertilize citrus in pots. Fertilize palms. Trim purple fountain grass. Trim lantana to keep their shape.

Birds in Paradise (Part Seven) Jeanne Gowan & Nate Gowan In this issue, we feature the two new tenants in our backyard palm tree. The male Hooded Oriole features a stunning yelloworange plumage. The female is a paler yellow, but still a beautiful bird in her own right. Sometimes called “palm leaf orioles,” they fashion their nests hanging on the undersides of the palm’s frond. Suspended like a basketball net with hundreds of thin, intertwined fibers, the seemingly delicate cradle can carry several eggs and last for months beyond its intended purpose.
The male Hooded Oriole
The female Hooded Oriole They are noted for their constant chattering while they forage for their nesting materials. Their constant flying back and forth across the blue Arizona sky makes for a stunning picture. They display a clownish attempt at drinking from a hummingbird feeder, awkwardly hanging upside down as they attempt to drink the nectar. The oriole’s song is a chattering of notes, and they also sometimes will mimic neighboring birds such as the Gila Woodpecker or Ashthroated Flycatchers.

We are looking forward to seeing the chicks hatch, which takes about thirteen days from the egg laying. We should expect between three to five chicks, thanks to the female who does all the incubating.
Over the years, we both have become better at identifying birds visually and by their songs. When we first began birding as a hobby, we had to rely on books for identification. There are several terrific bird books available, but if you have a cell phone you already have the opportunity to employ a free app called “Merlin Bird ID.” Developed by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, this app replaces a bulky bird book which relies on your sorting through pages of bird profiles for identification.
Merlin is designed to be a birding “coach” for the beginner bird watcher. The app asks you the same questions that an expert would ask to solve the bird’s identification. The first question asked is the date and location, using a skill set that takes years of experience and more than 200 million sightings submitted to eBird from birders across the United States and Canada. You are then asked to describe the color, size, and behavior of the bird. Because no two people will describe a bird exactly the same way, Merlin then presents a list of possible species based on Cornell Lab’s experts and from thousands of enthusiasts whose contributions to the online Merlin questionnaire help to identify a bird. There are more than three million descriptors that help with the matches. When you have finally identified your species, you will click on “this is my bird” and Merlin saves your record to help future identifications. You can also use the viewfinder of your camera to both capture the photo and to identify the bird. The Photo ID feature in Merlin allows anyone with a camera to take a photo and get a list of possible birds. A new, advanced version of the Photo ID tool is now available for download in the latest version of Merlin Bird ID for Nate with bird-dog Kenzie Android and iPhone. Simply choose an image from your phone’s gallery or take a shot from the back of your camera’s viewfinder and Merlin will walk you through the two quick steps so you can make your identification. Download Merlin Bird ID at: https://merlin.allaboutbirds.org/download/. Have fun birding. It’s a great way to enjoy the natural beauty found in Corte Bella. Look for us. HEALTH & FITNESS
Corte Bella Pickleball News Mary Blome I’m typing this for the CB Times on April 6th and at this time, as everyone knows, the courts are not open for play. I really miss everyone and hope that everyone is safe and healthy. It is unfortunate that we weren’t able to have our in-house tournament, our April beginners’ clinic, our weekly skill drills, and our end-of-season social. Also, I know that many of our snowbirds have either left for cooler weather or will be once this quarantine lifts. I look forward to seeing everyone back on the courts in the near future. Once the courts are open, we welcome anyone who wants to try this wonderful sport. It is not only good exercise but also a nice chance to meet people.
Why Tai Chi? Cathy Boorman You may have seen people practice Tai Chi (in a local park or in the Corte Bella Tai Chi Group) but have you ever wondered what the benefits of this activity really are? Tai Chi develops strength, flexibility, and range of motion; it does it slowly, gradually, without any quick or jerky movements. This approach helps minimize injuries and allows practitioners to gain confidence, moving areas of their bodies that may have experienced injury or trauma. This slow, gradual unwinding of the tissues and tendons allows the body to move in a more safely organic motion than many other exercise modalities. According to The Harvard Medical School Guide to Tai Chi, “... going more slowly may have a neurological advantage related to alleviating the fear of further injury. Tight areas, especially those earlier injured, often have an altered pattern of movement, called Kinesiophobia, or fear of movement. The gentle, predictable movements of Tai Chi create a feeling of trust and comfort.” While Tai Chi is not a weight-loss system or a method to necessarily give you a sculpted body, it can provide significant strength training for both upper and lower body. You spend much more time on one leg and shifting your weight slowly from one leg to another than you do with normal walking. According to The Harvard Medical School Guide to Tai Chi, “... multiple studies show improved lower body strength, in particular knee and ankle strength, from Tai Chi Training.” The Surgeons General Report has recommended Tai Chi as an excellent exercise for fall prevention. Tai Chi asks you to integrate your arm and leg movements, your balance front to back, left to right, and to often change directions. This sort of practice has been proven to make people less prone to falling. One of my favorite Tai Chi quotes is by a Tai Chi master who said, “It’s not
Corte Bella Tai Chi Group – March 2020 that I stay balanced all the time. I just recover so fast, no one notices the imbalance.” Tai Chi can actually help your brain function better and your memory improve. A University of Arizona study found that Tai Chi can improve your memory and attention span. Ask Tai Chi students if there is a lot of memorization and concentration needed to learn Tai Chi and I think most will tell you that when they are learning and practicing “the form,” they are 100% focused on the task at hand. When you are done with a Tai Chi class, you feel like you indeed have challenged your senior brain! Speaking of our “senior brains,” there are very few things we will do in which we will get steadily better and stronger as we age. Tai Chi is one of them. So think about joining a class or buy a CD and practice at home. Because it will be foreign to you when you first begin, make sure to give it a few weeks to work its way into your life. For those of us who are practitioners of this ancient art, we are grateful for every minute that we can enjoy it. For more information, please call Cathy Boorman at 206-818-0860.

Corte Bella Tennis Club News Donna Norton
St Patrick’s Day Tennis Tourney Gayle Backes and Sarah Smith were quickly catching up on news of their lives at the Tennis Club’s Annual Meeting in January, when Mark Sivakoff kicked off the business portion of the event. His challenge, “We need more volunteers to ‘step up’ and it would be OK if you just handled ONE event.” Gayle and Sarah quickly raised their hands to say they would take on the first event of the season, the St Patrick’s Day Tennis Tourney on Saturday, March 14th. They quickly started gathering decorations, plates, napkins, and prizes. During check-in they gave each player a coin pouch and number, setting the stage for rotating partners, with each individual filling his or her pouch with “good luck coins” based on the games won. Once play ended, contents of each bag were counted to establish the winners. Reno Peterson won with Doug Kitts a close second. Mary Lee Planer won the best Irish outfit on the court. After a short interlude, players and spouses gathered in the pool area for a potluck Irish celebration. Players were assigned a dish to bring. There was an abundance of corned beef and chicken salad. Everyone enjoyed the lunch, fellowship, and the effort put forth by Gayle and Sarah to make it a memorable first event of the season. They will be a hard act to follow!
CBTC Members at their St. Patrick’s Day Tournament Our farewell to the snowbirds had to be cancelled due to the COVID-19, but we hope to welcome them back with a bigger party in late fall. Our next tournament will be planned by Dale Huffman and Otto Furuta.
