ASSOCIATION

General Manager’s Update For a lot of us, we can begin to feel the progress and somewhat of, a return to a more normal life as we knew it before the Covid-19 pandemic. I do but then, I know better due to the close contact and responsibility involved with my position at Corte Bella. Some might call the perceived progress complacency and

Mike Arrington, General Manager

others might call it hopeful thinking. Hope is a positive emotional response but not a wise thing to bet on when running a business, especially with so much at stake. As someone required to know the facts related to what is allowed and what is not allowed (in order to operate safely without being closed down) I can say that, although it feels better right now some of that is real and some is just hope. Hold on to that hope and positivity but don’t allow yourself to be fooled. Yes, things have improved but we are not free to operate as we would have before the pandemic. As I write this article, what I did prior to this was to inform the board and the community of another positive test within the association. I had to trace where that person was, who they came in contact with during that time period, and notify everyone who might have been exposed. That includes residents, customers and staff. This is required by law and I assure you that it’s not fun and creates much additional work that I don’t need taking up my time. I tell you this not to complain but because it brings a dose of reality to the conversation rather than what things “seem” to be to the average pedestrian. We are now into the Fall season of what has been an interesting year for all of us, to say the least. The past six months seem to have flown by for most of us, right? I hear someone say almost daily, “wow, where has this year gone?” I don’t think anyone can help but feel that way. The weather is now cooling and is more enjoyable for outdoor events while the days get shorter each day. Now the flu season becomes a reality to complicate things even more. The Anacapa has re-opened to the public and re-opened the outdoor dining area, but continues to operate under the

restrictions in place as dictated by state and federal government. Corte Bella has operated significantly better with far more facilities open than any other community I know of, but there are still rules in place that must be adhered to. For instance, the Anacapa may only operate at 50% of the normal capacity. This is an obvious financial constraint on revenue to say the least. Employees must still operate behind plexi-glass shields, wear gloves and masks, and social distance from each other and the customer. Social distancing and mask requirements remain in place for all of Corte Bella facilities under the CDC guidelines and management company mandate. Large events that we have grown used to here at Corte Bella are still not practical under the Covid-19 restrictions in place for several reasons. To sponsor a large event where you cannot control the compliance of those attending is not practical and not recommended by our legal counsel. It appears we have a way to go before we can operate as we have in the past. Unfortunately, no one really knows when that will be even though it does appear that things are improving at this time. I don’t know when we will be able to relax again and not be constrained by the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions currently in place. What I do know is that our staff is anxious to return to normal operation but must, for now, continue to operate under the restrictions of social distancing, wearing masks, continuous sanitizing of facilities and wellness checks at the beginning of each shift before clocking in. I sincerely ask that you respect the rules in place and respect the efforts that staff is putting forth to keep you and others safe. Otherwise, it simply makes everyone’s job much harder. The rules in place are due to government’s mandate or recommendations and must be followed in order to operate without a danger of being closed down. Imagine what it would look like to have the Anacapa closed by the authorities. Obviously, this virus and the restrictions caused by it are an inconvenience to everyone involved. But, more importantly, the effects of contracting the Corona virus can and have been fatal. Your cooperation when using the Corte Bella facilities will benefit you, your neighbors and the HOA staff in navigating through these challenging times. We thank you for the consideration and cooperation shown that has and will make everything somewhat better for each of us. Your understanding and patience is very helpful and so appreciated. Thank you.

CULINARY

The Armchair Traveller Stays Close to Home: Wine Tasting in AZ Deborah Damery Lazear, CSW, Certified Wine Educator I didn’t think of Arizona as wine country; it is too darn hot. Well, I was wrong. There are four main wine regions in our state. Most sites are characterized by limestone and volcanic soil, with average elevations of 4,000 ft and above. They have similarities to the Rhône Valley of France, Rioja in Spain, the Dão of Portugal, and parts of Southern Italy such as Apulia, Abruzzi, or Sicily. Ironically, a bigger problem for Arizona grape growers is frost, not heat! Many growers are traditionalists, using sheep to graze on the weeds and grass between the rows. Kief Manning of Kief-Joshua Vineyards says “The Old English Baby Doll sheep love the alcohol-rich fermented grape skins that are used for compost in the vineyards. Sleepy time!”

Southern Arizona gets two hits with Sonoita Wine Country and the Wilcox Wine Country. Sonoita-Elgin area, south of Tucson, has over a dozen wineries. Sonoita is an American Viticultural Area (AVA) with wine history dating back to 1690 with Listan Preito (aka Mission Grape) brought by the Jesuits and Franciscan monks. It boasts AZ’s oldest commercial winery started 1983. Most notable wineries are Kief-Joshua Vineyard in Elgin, Dos Cabezas gold medal winner, Flying Leap Vineyards (try their Cabernet Franc), Canelo Hill, and Sonoita Vineyards. To use the Sonoita appellation name, at least 85% of the grapes must have been grown within the established AVA. Consider the Xanadu Ranch Get-Away Guest Ranch in Sonoita for a rustic stay.

The red varietals that do well here include Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Tannat, Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Graciano, and Nebbiolo. Whites include Pinot Gris, Pinot Grigio, Malvasia Bianca, Viognier, Rousanne and Marsanne. If you are looking for big, fruity Cabernet Sauvignon or buttery Chardonnay, go elsewhere. AZ has its own flavor profile. Grapes that do well here can handle the heat of summer, retain good acidity in the heat and can tolerate drought without getting too thirsty. Note: These are great Thanksgiving Turkey wines. Northern Arizona includes Jerome, Cottonwood, Sedona, Oak Creek and Camp Verde areas. There are over a dozen wineries here. This is red wine area. Notable award winners are Page Springs, Javelina Leap, Alcantara Vineyards, and Caduceus Cellars. Many wineries are a day trip away. Plan to overnight in Cottonwood for a central touring location. While in the area, consider the Verde Valley Railroad “Grape Train”, A Day in the West “Jeep & Wine Tasting Tour”, or First Class Charter “Verde Valley Winery Tour”.

Wilcox Wine Country is also a great destination. Be sure to visit Flying Leap Vineyards, Keeling-Schaefer Tasting Room, Pillsbury Wine Company (for an award winning Mourvèdre) and Zarpara Vineryards. In 2007, Senate Bill 1276 was passed allowing for shipping of wine from Arizona wineries to your home. No need to travel to taste. Total Wine carries a good selection, so you don’t have to go far to experience Arizona wine flights of fancy, and no airplane is required! Cheers!

Rayden Haytasingh, Anacapa Line Cook; Dependable For a Long Time Rayden Haytasingh (left) has been a part of Corte Bella’s Anacapa restaurant for more than twelve years. He began working there while still in high school. Rayden started as a dishwasher and has, through hard work and dedication, worked his way up to being a line cook. He learned about the Corte Bella Anacapa through his older brother, Steve Haytasingh (a long time Anacapa server/bartender). Rayden was born in Thunderbird Hospital in July 1990 and graduated from Dysart High School in 2008. He has been married for ten years. He and his wife have three children (two girls and a boy) ages 10, 5, and 2 years. He currently resides in Phoenix with his family. For Rayden, the transition from dishwashing into kitchen began working with food prep. Soon after, Executive Chef Daniel Haywood began teaching him techniques and methods necessary to be a cook “on the line”. Rayden is completely satisfied with his

current position and stated that his co-workers are his second family. He loves the creative aspect of his work. He enjoys how he is always learning new recipes and different ways to prepare and plate menu items. Rayden also helps keep the kitchen running smoothly through stocking, inventorying, working with the servers to expedite orders and helping to ensure the kitchen operates safely and hygienically. The residents and First Services management are very strong reasons why Rayden likes working at Corte Bella. He feels very supported and appreciated. During the difficult months after the appearance of the corona virus, Rayden was impressed by how the Corte Bella HOA treated all its local employees. During this troublesome period, he discovered the importance of helping one another and the need to keep hope alive always. Rayden’s favorite cuisine is traditional Mexican. He would love to travel, experience other cultures and taste their food. He would especially like to visit China. In the meantime, he is very satisfied with his life here in the West Valley. His dream is to one day be an executive chef. Food is his life’s work and Corte Bella is fortunate to have him “on the line” in the Anacapa.

From Corte Bella Neighborhood Awareness and Safety Committee (NASC) Elizabeth Pridmore, Chairperson Who has the right of way? When a pedestrian is crossing a roadway at any point other than within a marked crosswalk or within an unmarked crosswalk at an intersection, they must yield the right of way to vehicles. See reference box. One safety issue that seems to repeatedly come up here in Corte Bella (besides speeding) is that people like to use our streets instead of our sidewalks for walking, running or jogging. What becomes a safety issue is that many walkers have earpieces in place listening to music, a book, etc., virtually assuring they will not see or hear oncoming traffic. We realize that this will be an on-going battle, (one that probably will never end, so may I suggest that residents who continue to use the streets pay more attention and when they see an approaching vehicle or bike, move to the sidewalk. You do not have the right of way, a street is not

a crosswalk, and if struck, you lose. If walking at night or in the dark, wear some type of reflective clothing. Recently, a resident was almost hit while walking in the street in the dark. Not by a car but by a cyclist who did not see the resident until they came right up to them, resulting in a sharp turn to avoid the walker. This cyclist sustained a severe knee injury due to this crash. Remember, the cyclist had the right of way. A good rule of thumb is not to assume you have the right of way as a walker and always move out of the way. Be courteous please.

Another safety concern brought to my attention is that cyclists are riding sideby-side, and while making turns, they are taking up the entire side of the street. Again, Car vs Cyclist - you get the picture? Please ride single file. Too often NASC committee members are told about situations which are not only dangerous but could end in tragedy. Please do your part to stay safe. Remember, streets are for cars and sidewalks are for people.

Just How Safe is Corte Bella? Steve Dodder, Neighborhood Awareness & Safety Committee “How safe is Corte Bella?” is an often-posed question, both by prospective and current Corte Bella residents. With today’s internet technology, you can answer that question for yourself and graphically see the results. Simply open your web browser and type in the address of https://communitycrimemap.com/ From the website: “LexisNexis’s public crime map, Community Crime Map, connects law enforcement with the community to reduce crime and improve public safety. Crime mapping helps the public get a better idea of the crime activity in their area so they can make more informed decisions about how to stay safe. Also, Community Crime Map goes beyond crime mapping by having the ability to automatically alert us about recent crime activity.” Once you have the site open and accept the continue buttons, type in your or another’s address into the address field in the top left area. You can use the +/- buttons to increase or decrease the neighborhood viewing areas – this will allow you to see the areas around CB. You can also move the map around with the cursor to view other areas. To change the one-week default, go to the “Date Range” area and use the calendar to expand the

date range. To remove minor infractions like “noise,” go to the “Event” area and uncheck an event. To remove all infractions, click on “deselect all”. For sex offenders, go to the “Offenders” area and click on “sex/known offenders”. Lastly, to sign up for daily/weekly/monthly updates or alerts, click on the “sign up for crime alerts” button on the top right-hand side of the top bar. Your Corte Bella Neighborhood Awareness and Safety Committee (NASC) hopes that you find this information to be useful.

Safety Tips for CB Residents Tom Morin Now that summer is well behind us and cooler months are ahead, there’s a chance that you could have unwelcomed desert wildlife near your homes. The following is a true story that occurred in Corte Bella, and I’m sharing it with hopes that it might save someone from getting in harm’s way. In early October, a resident was preparing his recyclables for pick up when he was met by a snake, a four and a half foot long Diamondback snake! It was coiled and resting comfortably in the warm sun. Fortunately, the resident reacted calmly and swiftly by following protocol. That is, he called 911 and told the dispatcher this is a non-medical emergency and was directed to the proper authorities. They arrived within minutes of his call and safely removed the creature to its own habitat, somewhere in the desert. The cool-headed reaction by this resident should remind all of us this could easily happen to any of us. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

If bitten, seek medical attention immediately.

Call 911 and explain it’s a non-medical emergency.

Explain briefly and precisely the purpose of your call.

If possible, and with caution, try to identify the creature, i.e. take a photo, etc.

Do not disturb the snake. It can and will strike with precision and lightning speed.

Keep an eye on the snake from a safe distance until professionals arrive.

Don’t be a hero.

Above all, remain calm and don’t allow anyone, including pets, to get near the snake.

The Mercer Story... Rob Mercer, President, Mercer Family Vineyards, served as a captain in the US Marine Corps in the 1990s. After the attacks on 9-11, he reenlisted to serve in Iraq. When Rob returned from service, John Derrick, VP Mercer Family Vineyards, spoke to Rob about planting a special vineyard. John lost best friend Richard Guadagno, who was among the patriots who fought and died on United Flight 93. It was befitting to honor the memory of Richard Guadagno’s patriotism thus 911 vines were hand-planted in BLOCK 93 of the Cavalie Vineyard. The fruit from these vines is used exclusively to produce Eagle & Plow, BLOCK 93 Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Northwest Valley Volunteers Help on National Clean-Up Day Linda Wright, Group Coordinator September 19th was National Clean-Up Day and Maricopa County had a number of volunteer groups out on the roadways, cleaning up litter as a part of the MCDOT Adopt-a-Road program. Here in our community, the Northwest Valley Volunteers rose to the occasion, fielding a team of seven cleanup veterans who scoured the length of El Mirage Road from the 303 Highway ramps to the intersection with Wescott Drive – that’s 3.19 miles to cover and pick up litter. The end result was 28 bright orange bags filled with trash, along with a number of tires and other large or misshaped debris that could not be bagged but was placed on the shoulder of the road for easy pickup by the county’s retrieval contractor. The team worked from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM to complete that work.

The following Corte Bella residents deserve a big thank you for their service and their efforts to keep El Mirage clear of trash: • JoAnne Hurst • Steve Hurst • Roger Kleinschmidt • Paula Penkauskas • Tom Mauger • Keith Conners • Linda Wright (coordinator and driver) If this is an activity that interests you, please contact David or Linda Wright at trgibe@aol.com for additional information. Our group schedules cleanup work at least twice yearly or more often if required. We’d love to have you on our team.

The Replacement Years Ask Agnes Let’s talk about replacing things. First it’s knees, then perhaps hips, and teeth. The list includes [wait for it]---toilets. All homes in Corte Bella have at least two. Keeping toilets clean and maintained is often challenging. Regular cleaning and having softened water helps. In toilet bowls, a pinkish ring often forms around and below the water line. This is an airborne bacteria called Serratia Marcescens. This is a bacterial colony that may cause infections in humans and perhaps animals that may drink from the toilet bowl. It’s easily removed with bleach or disinfectant scrub and a toilet bowl brush. Although, rather than harbor those bacteria in a stored toilet bowl brush, I suggest using a Clorox Toilet Wand. The cleaning heads are immediately disposable. One head is enough to clean at least two toilets. They do an excellent job and don’t scratch the porcelain.

Another matter is the hard-water ring that also forms at the water line. Water softening does help. Before soft water, I tried cleanser, brushes, a “screen” material from the hardware store, pumice sticks and vinegar. The rings were never truly gone. A plumber told me about a product called RING-B-GONE [available from Advanced Plumbing at Hwy 60 and Hwy 101]. In-tank cleaners are a no-no. They can ruin the plastics on the tank interior. Realizing our toilets had deep scratches from 16 years of cleaning, and that they needed some tank maintenance, we had them replaced a few weeks ago. We had several estimates and found buying them from Home Depot and having our preferred plumber do the installation was the best option. We also upgraded to chair-height bowls. Your knees and back will thank you. Now, we’re good to ‘go’!

The Best Kind of Americans (Grateful, Gracious, and Good) Lou and Teresa Kokodynski This is a love story - a timeless tale of courage, faith and love that spans four countries, two continents, an ocean and a world in turmoil. The odds against it were high, yet it happened. Lou Kokodynski was born in 1939 in Lwow, as Germany invaded Poland in September of that fateful year. Lwow was originally located in Eastern Poland but after the war, it was ceded to the Soviet Union, and it is now a part of Ukraine. Its name was changed to the Ukrainian Lviv. Six years later, 244 miles northwest of Lwow, Teresa was born in the city of Lodz in Central Poland. The Kokodynski family relocated to Walbrzych, in the southwest corner of Poland, at the end of WWII. Lou remained there for a while after his parents emigrated to the U.S. (under the auspices of the Red Cross) in 1962. Shortly thereafter, Lou was given permission to leave. By that time, his parents and other relatives had already established themselves in Chicago. The journey from Lodz to Chicago took Lou through Canada and then on a train ride through Michigan, a sliver of northwestern Indiana, and northern Illinois. It happened to be July 4th, and this young immigrant who knew little of his new home at the time definitely didn’t know what to make of the constant fireworks displays that accompanied his nighttime journey to his new home. To this day, Lou has a fifty-cent piece which represented his total net worth at the end of that train ride, all that he had left of the $5.00 he had been given upon his departure from Poland. Lou and Teresa began a two-year correspondence through which both felt an immediate and special connection. They met, in person, in 1966 when Lou took a 6-week trip back to Poland. Four very short weeks later they were married. Lou returned to the U.S. and Teresa followed him shortly thereafter and they began married life in Chicago. Theresa remembers how wonderful and

welcoming all of Lou’s family were to her, but especially how her mother-in-law embraced her and loved her like the daughter she never had. Neither Lou nor Teresa spoke English upon arrival. But they were determined to learn it quickly. Lou was already a bit of a polyglot, fluent in Polish and Ukrainian and conversant in German. Theresa, who spoke only Polish at the time, had to learn not only English, but also Ukrainian to communicate with Lou’s family who was also learning English. Her primary sources of English instruction were watching Sesame St. (with her children) and a daily diet of soap operas like General Hospital and All My Children. Neither Lou nor Teresa will ever forget their naturalization ceremony in 1972 when they were sworn in as U.S. citizens in a lovely event presided over by a wonderful and welcoming judge. Over the next forty-five years Lou worked as a tool-maker, and Teresa spent twenty-five of those years as a bank teller manager while they raised two sons, (both successful dentists). Lou and Teresa are deeply grateful for the opportunities their adopted country afforded them, their marriage and their family which now includes five grandchildren – their current pride and joy. Lou and Teresa are grateful to this country – a land they consider the last bastion of freedom, a land where they were able to build and enjoy a good life together. Lou and Teresa both have a deep faith which has always sustained them, and both are grateful for the many blessings that sprang from their shared beliefs. And, like so many of us, Lou and Teresa think that living in Corte Bella is living in a paradise, a dream come true. Their shared philosophy is a simple one of optimism, counting their many blessings every night and again each morning. Life should be lived without regrets, with no room for anger. Lou, the quintessential hard-working Midwesterner, attributes his long life and strong marriage to a “couple Makers Mark Manhattans” a day. He may well be onto something there. Teresa, the quintessential Midwestern wife and working mother, just smiles at him with a knowing, loving, and understanding look that transcends language. It works for them.

A Birthday Party to Remember Jay Finnell Has His 100th Birthday Linda Wright On Saturday, October 10th, long-time Corte Bella resident Jay Finnell was treated to a “drive-by” birthday party of epic proportions to celebrate him becoming a centenarian. There were fifty-three vehicles (cars and golf carts), four motorcycles, three bicycles and a fire truck from the local station in the procession. Jay expressed his deep gratitude for all the wonderful birthday greetings and all his many greeting cards and balloons. He also got a beautiful home-baked cheesecake birthday cake with a signed commendation from the Governor of Arizona. He was so grateful to his neighbors, Tom and Charlotte Dietz, for organizing this wonderful celebration. Jay stated he will remember this birthday parade for the next fifty years. It’s evident that his sense of humor is very sharp along with his mind. Jay revealed that he never thought he’d live to see his 100th birthday – there were times in his life that he didn’t think he’d get one more day. He’s never feared death. Over the years he’s always been one to face realities and learn to cope with whatever came his way. During WWII, he was injured but, thankfully, came through that experience a whole person. To Jay, the most important thing is to appreciate every day as a gift

and to cherish the love of family and friends. Jay lived through the depression years and watched his father, who was a very successful businessman, lose everything. He and his family learned to be self-sufficient but Jay says his mother would always find food to share with the needy. He strongly feels that the values of caring for each other and being willing to help one another should be stressed today more than ever. Jay says he plans to live to be 105 as long as he can have a decent quality of life and be as independent as possible. For his birthday next year (101st) he plans to take his much loved granddaughter to Paris. Plans are a wonderful thing. Jay is a Corte Bella treasure.

Corte Bella’s Annual Christmas Light Display Benefits the Salvation Army Greg Peck has started to pull down and stack boxes of Christmas lights into the “yes they work” pile and the “not checked yet” pile. All in preparation for another year of decorating what has become known as the “Christmas Light Display” benefiting the Salvation Army. They need our help as they enter into a year where kettles will not be readily available due to the virus, all the while the number of people in need is rising. The San Ramon Stringers welcome our Corte Bella neighbors and their generous spirit to join us on Friday, December 4th for a “socially” distanced walk or ride around the circle of homes displaying lights of the season. Thank you Corte Bella for all you have done in the past and your awesome generosity.

Birds in Paradise (Part Eleven) Jeanne Gowan & Nate Gowan This month, we feature another nearby (and one of Arizona’s best) birding areas, the Glendale Recharge Ponds. Throughout the year, six very large basin ponds attract huge numbers of waterfowl and wading birds including quite a few rarities, making it one of the most exciting hotspots in the state. During the winter months, it attracts a variety of waterfowl and raptors.

Loggerhead Shrike

These ponds belong to Salt River Project (SRP) and were completed in 2007 as part of the New River-Agua Fria River Underground Storage Project, developed through partnerships with local cities to store water from a variety of sources.

Binoculars and/or a spotting scope are recommended to view birds at these large ponds. Birders should be on their best behavior when visiting these ponds, because SRP has been generous enough to let birders use what is essentially their work area. If an SRP employee is there working, always give them the right of way and do not enter or go into the basins. Some common birds that you would see include Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Black-necked Stilts, and White-faced Ibis. Recently, there have been several sightings of Roseate Spoonbills. These large, pink waders with big spatula-like bills seldom stray from the coasts of Texas, Mexico and Florida. Finding them in Arizona was a rare treat. There are also plenty of raptors including

Glendale Recharge Ponds includes left to right: Roseate Spoonbill, Great Blue Heron, Greater Yellowlegs, Snowy Egrets (smaller) and Great Egrets (larger) Bald Eagles, Osprey and Peregrine Falcons. These birds would not be found in Corte Bella, so the 40-minute drive is well worth it. The easiest way to find the ponds is to enter “Glendale Recharge Ponds” on a Maps app, but be sure to approach from the southside on Bethany Home Road, where you can find parking and access to the pathways. Closer to home, we have sighted 74 different bird species in our Corte Bella backyard. The most recent addition was a seldom seen Loggerhead Shrike. Photos by Nate Gowan

Support the Salvation Army Angel Tree Ask Agnes

Please Be Generous... Continue Corte Bella’s Tradition of Giving, Caring and Sharing... Corte Bella residents have shown overwhelming generosity by providing Christmas gifts for the many disadvantaged children in the west valley of Phoenix for many years. The Salvation Army Angel tags are on the special Christmas tree in the Fitness Center from November 14th and it will remain there until December 14th. These tags have a child’s name, age and a wish-list of gifts provided by that child or their parent. Donated gifts should be put under the Christmas tree, unwrapped, with the original Angel tag attached by the end of the day on December 12th. The Salvation Army will take care of wrapping and delivering the donated gifts to each child’s family.

Your generosity is most appreciated by the Salvation Army and by the underprivileged children you are so kindly supporting. Last year, Corte Bella donated more bicycles and wonderful items like sports equipment, clothing and educational items (books and art supplies). The Sun Cities Salvation Army West Valley Corps was so very grateful to all of you. While you help out during the Holiday Season, please be aware that the Salvation Army continues to aid the needy members of our community throughout the year. The Salvation Army will pick up household items you might like to donate and will accept donated items at their facility in Surprise. The Salvation Army is always looking for volunteers. The Sun Cities Salvation Army West Valley Corps is located at 17420 Avenue of the Arts in Surprise (just off Bell Road on the Avenue of the Arts) and their phone contact number is 623-977-1084.

Corte Bella Pickleball Spotlight Mary Blome Meet Fred Greenberg, Pickle Ball Board President: My wife, Cindy and I were among the very first residents in Corte Bella, purchasing our first home sixteen years ago. We’re now in our third home, a San Marco, having downsized with each new home. We first heard about pickleball about three years ago and thought it was a new sandwich offered by Subway. In January 2018, we were able to attend a beginner’s clinic and immediately fell in love with the sport. We joined the Corte Bella Pickleball Club that Sunday. We’ve enjoyed playing so much that we both retired from playing senior softball that winter. Pickleball is such a fantastic sport; it’s fun, social and great exercise. Although our community has been greatly affected by the Covid-19 restrictions, we had a great summer (it’s not as hot at 6:00 AM) and look forward to an incredible fall/winter season on the courts as the snowbirds return to Arizona.

Pickle Ball Club News:

There was a wonderful turn out for the first Beginner Clinic held on October 25th. A schedule will be published soon for the monthly clinics.

I’ve been the 1st Assistant Golf Professional here for the past seven years and am excited to take on this new role. I intend to make the membership experience at the golf club unique and fulfilling, in the tradition of the Corte Bella community. Daniell has extensive experience and we look forward to him taking the Club Grill to the next level. All of us here at the golf club anticipate another wonderful winter golf and social season, even if it might be “distant”. We hope to see everyone happy and healthy around the community.

Corte Bella Tennis Touches Her Life for the Better Donna Norton Kathy Schwar has been on the road for years as a sales representative for transportation services throughout the Midwest, but when the virus struck the travel stopped. She read an article in the CB Times and decided to hook back up to a game she has loved for years.

At the age of 10, Kathy and her mom moved into an apartment complex with a tennis court that provided a backboard for practice. A neighbor provided her with an old racket and some tennis balls. She quickly found people to hit with and began learning the game in earnest. She picked up jobs as a babysitter, saving enough money to purchase her first racket. Discovering while reading the paper that her community was having a local tournament near their home, she hopped on her bicycle and headed out to join the competition. She entered several of the town’s challenges returning home with trophies in hand. Her mother was encouraging and proud of her accomplishments. She has returned to the game she loves now that she is home, playing on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings, with a desire to play more days in the future. Her comment, “It is like riding a bike, you never really lose your ability to hit the ball. It just takes some time to find the groove again. I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting new friends on the court! We welcome Kathy and her husband Bill to the Corte Bella Tennis community.
