ASSOCIATION

Respectfully Support Your Candidates You may have noticed that the 2020 election season is a little more contentious than in years past. I hope you are chuckling now. It’s obvious that folks are very passionate about their candidates and choices this year. That said, I wanted to remind everyone of the rules in place for campaign signage. We have had a blizzard of complaints

Mike Arrington, General Manager

this year and as you know there is a contractual requirement and expectation of enforcement resting on the association’s shoulders. Many residents have reported violations of the signage law to us even though we are keenly aware and already doing our jobs. The first thing to know is that just because it is reported to us does not mean the sign will disappear immediately. I say this because some reporters actually asked us to go on to the lot in question and take their sign. That is not how we do things in this community or country for that matter. People have the right to due process and that process takes time just like anything else. Sometimes time and due process can be synonymous. Just like all violations of the covenants, there is a series of notifications that must occur inside a pre-determined time frame before sanctions can be issued and let me say they have been issued when warranted. Unfortunately, even the fines do not resolve every issue right away for one reason or another at times. Rest assured that no HOA personnel will enter on to someone’s lot to remove someone’s sign. We do not have that right to do so without due process and it’s a bad look to begin with.

71 days of election day and the total signage square footage may not exceed 9 square feet. You may have as many signs as you want as long as the square footage limit is not exceeded. For instance, you can have nine signs one foot by one foot each, or one sign three foot by three foot. Do you see where I am going with this? A three foot by five foot flag or sign is considered one sign but exceeds the limit because that totals fifteen square feet. By the way, this Corte Bella rule is based on the Arizona law. Any questions related to this may be answered by the community Admin Office located near the pool complex or you can contact me by email or telephone. In summary, I’m sure the political races will be heated by the time you read this article and that is great. Americans should be passionate about who they want to see elected and that is what makes this country we live in so special. Although it is not always pretty, it’s much better than the alternatives. That said, please follow the rules in place that everyone agreed to when purchasing a lot in this wonderful community. Enforcement of the rules is part of what makes Corte Bella special and protects everyone’s home value. Homeowners do not have the luxury of deciding which rules they will follow and which ones they do not agree with since there is a contractual requirement in place to enforce all of the rules. Please respect your neighbors opinions and choices and help us out so we don’t have to spend your money and our valuable time on political signage issues. Thank you and happy voting.

Some of the sign violations are reported to us and most are seen during a routine inspection of the community which occur on a regular basis. All violations are noted at that time. The two basic rules that you should fundamentally know as a resident is that political signage can be displayed anywhere on the lot inside

Board Talk

Hello everyone. It’s my turn to write the “Board Talk” article for the CB Times. For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Catherine Russo Kelly. I am a retired New York City teacher who

Catherine Kelly, Director Liaison to the Anacapa Advisory Group

moved to Corte Bella in February of 2016. While living in Brooklyn Heights, I served on several Boards, one for over twenty years. That amount of experience allows me to say that I have never served with such a hard-working, intelligent and caring Board or with a better HOA. While following government directives, we met frequently to do our best to make your lives as safe and pleasant as possible. We even managed to cool down the weather, at least for a few days. As Board Liaison to the Anacapa Advisory Group, I’m pleased to see more residents and their guests dining at the Anacapa. I have been to several off-site restaurants and while they are following the rules, they are not as cautious as we are here in Corte Bella. So come sip the drinks; Happy Hour prices are all day. Come meet the staff who are gloved, masked and ready to take your temperature. Come taste the food prepared lovingly by our chefs. It’s really time to start celebrating; right this way, your table is waiting. See you soon!

I borrowed some of the lyrics from Cabaret to seque into my next love, theater. I promised my late husband John, who was a professional actor that I would form a theater group and “The Kelly Players” was born here in Corte Bella. It was a thrill for me to see how much talent there was in our community and what a great show we put together just awhile ago. In the words of Arnold, “We’ll be back!” To sum up this article, I am honored and happy to serve on this Board and hopefully bring joy to your lives in all my endeavors.

From the Editor’s Desk Here comes October, the tenth month of this most unusual year. It’s also the sixth of the seven months with thirty one (31) days. That can be a good or a bad thing depending

Linda Wright, Editor CB Times

on your outlook but I think we are all looking forward to the final months of 2020. This month brings us the tradition of Halloween and that means candy corn, spooky decorations, beautiful sunsets and cool mornings that may require a sweater or sweatshirt. If you travel up into the high country, you’ll be sure to see some pretty great Fall foliage. October is Polish American National Heritage Month, National Cookbook Month, and Country Music Month (that one I can get behind.)

This month also means the HOA Finance Committee is ready to present the budget for 2021 to the HOA Board of Directors. While this will be a virtual meeting for those who wish to “attend”, please consider joining the meeting which is scheduled for Friday, October 2nd at 6:00 PM. Stay informed. The patience and the resolve of every resident have been tested since the pandemic hit our country in March. Over the past eight (8) months, our community has adapted to some extreme restrictions and different ways of operating within our gates in regards to the use of our amenities and general services. We should be proud of how we navigated all that has occurred and we should all be grateful to our management company, First Services, for their effort to keep us safe, well and moving forward. Remember to enjoy the beauty of that Fall sunset and keep that smile on your face. We are so fortunate to live in Corte Bella.

CULINARY

Recipes For An Autumn Night

Anacapa Executive Chef Dan Haywood

Pan Seared Lamb Chops with Rosemary Mustard Glaze

CULINARY

Pinot Passion: The Armchair Traveller Goes to New Zealand Deborah Damery Lazear, CSW I love a juicy rack of lamb with a rosemary mustard crust or a boneless leg of lamb stuffed with herbs, breadcrumbs, and pine nuts. The perfect wine pairing for both is Pinot Noir. What better place to find both than New Zealand, where it is said there are seven times as many sheep as people. A little wine history here: The Dutch landed on the northern tip of the South Island in 1642 and found the Maori less than hospitable so they left! James Cook, the English explorer arrived in 1769, resulting in the British colonization of New Zealand. Fifty years later, an Anglican missionary named Samuel Marsden planted grape vines but no record of wine production can be found. In 1839, a Scotsman named James Busby successfully made the first wines at the top of the North Island. Dalmatian immigrants from Croatia promoted viticulture during the turn of the 20th century with vineyards in Auckland and Northland. A relentless temperance movement handicapped the industry and it wasn’t until after World War II that wine was permitted to be sold by the bottle from wine shops. Selling wine in restaurants became legal in 1960 but only up until the 10:00 PM curfew. The modern wine industry didn’t really take off until the 1970’s. New Zealand has the most southerly vineyards in the world. Its sea breezes promote long, slow ripening and help retain the vibrant flavors distinctive to New Zealand wine. Its growing season is long and harvest can span from March to May. Rain can lead to mold and a vegetative taste in wine but a new trellising system perfected in the 1980’s promoted ripeness and maturity of the grapes. Early on phylloxera (a louse that infects the vine roots) and powdery mildew (oidium) hampered good grape production and the remedy was to plant resistant strains Isabella (white) and Baco Noir (red). Unfortunately, those grapes don’t make very good wine. Today those hybrids are practically nonexistent. The current wine industry has grown very fast, up from 31 vineyards in 1970 to well over 500 today. New Zealand is well known for its grassy, fresh Sauvignon Blanc but it is the Pinot Noir that I am after today. Pinot is a difficult grape to grow. Thin skinned, it sunburns easily giving a “raisiny” taste to the wine. It mildews at the drop of a hat. It has low tannins, so spoilage can be a problem if not handled properly. On the up side, it showcases the soil it is grown in like no other. And, New Zealand has the right soil for it. Our journey takes us south to Central Otaga, on the South Island where Dijon clones (originally from Burgundy, France) of Pinot Noir have been planted. It is the most southerly wine region with true continental climate, extreme diurnal temperature swings

(difference between day and night temps) helping to keep the freshness in the wine. The soil has heavy deposits of mica and schist in silt loam, the soil reflecting heat and concentrating the flavors of the grapes. Pinots from here lean toward vibrant flavors of red and black cherry with a dash of wild thyme. Their Pinots are flashier and more fruit forward than others in New Zealand. Other important Pinot Noir areas in New Zealand are Marlborough, South Island where the Pinot has ripe red fruit, succulent acidity and plenty of finesse. Canterbury, half way between Marlborough and Central Otago, is probably the least known Pinot region. It’s hot, dry winds can cause havoc in the vineyard but its saving grace is the limestone soil, the holy grail for Pinot Noir. Its wines are aromatic, with dried floral and fresh herb notes. The North Island Pinot production centers around Martinborough where a dry climate and extreme winds can knock the buds off the flowering vines leading to reduced yield. The resulting wines are different than any other Pinot in New Zealand with a strong back bone and more tannin than acidity with a savory finish. That was quite a trip in my quest to follow the Pinot Noir trail. New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc might just have Pinot envy.

Anacapa’s Molly (Amelia) Parks, An Expediter Extraordinaire was heavily involved in banquet setup and was a runner for the banquet line during events. Molly enjoys her employment at the Anacapa and appreciates the flexibility that her managers allow when she requires time off for her college studies and exams. Her best friend is also employed at the restaurant and this makes for a pleasant environment. She likes the residents she serves and her co-workers. Molly has discovered that during this pandemic that she isn’t very good at entertaining herself. She tried to develop some strict exercise routines but that didn’t stick too well. She misses the freedom she had to hang out with friends and go freely about doing whatever was fun. She does feel that things will soon improve and she is always telling her nieces and nephew that the restrictions now in place will make things better soon.

When you dine at our community restaurant, it’s likely that your order will come out of the kitchen on the arms of a lovely young lady with a name tag that says “Amelia” on the brass bar. It’s an interesting story of how Molly Katherine Parks became “Amelia” during working hours. She had misplaced her name tag but needed to wear one while on the floor, so she volunteered to wear this one. Now, many customers and even some of her co-workers refer to her as “Amelia”, so she has decided to just go with it.

Molly is a serious young woman with a quick wit as well a good work ethic. The Anacapa and Corte Bella are lucky to have her working to serve us almost every dinner service and on Sunday at breakfast. She is a delightful and hardworking employee. May you achieve all your dreams, Molly/Amelia.

Molly was born twenty two years ago in Walnut Creek, California but when she was in third grade her father was transferred to Phoenix for his work. Molly has an older brother and she currently resides with her parents who have a home in Peoria, near the intersection of 69th and Greenway. Her dad is employed in the IT field and her mother works in retail. Molly returned to live at home after giving up her apartment in Phoenix when the cost of rent became an issue for her budget. Molly graduated from Deer Valley High School in 2016 and earned an associates degree at Glendale Community College. She did one year at Northern Arizona University and is now attending Arizona State University online with an expected graduation date of 2022. Molly changed her major from fashion to photography where she is studying both the technical aspects as well as the aesthetics of this profession. She would like to become gainfully employed as a wedding planner/photographer or a portrait photographer after she gains her BA in her major. Molly has worked in the Anacapa for the past 2 ½ years and is currently the kitchen expediter – the person who moves the orders from the kitchen to your table with efficiency and skill. Before the pandemic affected the Corte Bella food service department, Molly

interested in this topic and it should be deleted or replaced, (which would be a shame since so many residents are world travelers and probably have some great stories to tell). Your web support team reviews this section of the website annually in January, purging entries for all but the previous year to make space for new entries for the current year. This helps to reduce clutter and to make searches quicker and easier for users. The Discussion Groups are an excellent forum for exchanging and sharing lots of useful and interesting information. You can post pictures of bobcats or javelinas in your yard, (some people think this a cool thing to do), let friends and neighbors know about interesting events that are going to take place in the area, share information about which restaurants are worth visiting or why folks may not want to eat at an establishment. Please limit the negative reviews to generalities. Don’t name names, but by all means do comment on the service, the atmosphere, etc. Along those lines, use of the Discussion Groups do come with caveats. You can find the current HOA policy on Discussion Group Forum Usage on the website in the Resource Center (Governing Documents -> Policies -> Policies in Current Effect). We strongly encourage you to read it before posting as it contains a very specific list of do’s and don’ts associated with usage. As the 2020 presidential election kicks into overdrive, it is imperative that everyone remember that political discussion is one of the don’ts. When posting, please try to determine the best category for your post beforehand. If you are recommending a restaurant then please use the Restaurant Reviews category, rather than the General or the Can anyone recommend a … categories. Keeping comments in the right lane improves the overall efficiency and flow of the forum. In closing, although there is generally no prohibition against posting rhetorical questions about the community, it is not recommended. You may get responses but none will be official. If you want the answer to a question about the community, you need to ask the right person. That person is either the HOA General Manager or one of his department heads. (Their contact information is listed on the website under the Contacts tab in the main menu and also in the CB Times.) If you aren’t sure about whom to contact, you can always send an email to cbgm@cortebellacca.com or pick up the phone to call the staff member or the General Manager. They will be happy to answer your question. And that answer will be the definitive, official answer. Please enjoy the Discussion Groups and make them interesting, informative, and relevant.

LTPC Upcoming Resident Questionnaire Long Term Planning Committee Community resident “wants and needs” remain a matter of utmost importance to the Board of Directors and its Committees as they oversee the management of Corte Bella’s amenities. After all, these amenities are for our collective use and enjoyment and they should reflect the community ethos. A good way to document those wants and needs is through periodic questionnaires. Responses to previous questionnaires served as the basis for the actions and improvements already taken. The last questionnaire took place in 2015. Corte Bella has been a very active real estate market over the intervening years and there is no doubt that our demographics have changed somewhat from 2015. Therefore, the Long-Term Planning Committee (LTPC) would like to resample the community at this time to get

a feel for how current residents feel about Corte Bella’s amenities.

better know and understand those requirements.

Corte Bella is now 16 years old. Responses to previous surveys, as well as resident comments in meetings and written communications, have expressed a wish to update our facilities to better respond to then current needs, as well as to improve the overall attractiveness of the community.

Once the results of the survey have been reviewed, collated, and analyzed they will be made public and forwarded to the Board for consideration as the Campus Improvement Project moves forward.

In 2019, residents overwhelmingly voted to increase the Capital Improvement Fee assessed to homes as they sell. This was done to increase the Capital Improvement Fund which is the sole source of funding to enhance our facilities/amenities. In support of this, we have begun a Campus Improvement Project to both update and possibly enhance facilities to better fit evolving requirements. But we need to

Please take some time to answer the questions and send in your replies. We hope to have the questionnaire in the November issue of the CB Times. It will also be concurrently available online on the Corte Bella website (www.cortebella.net). Resident opinions are a bellweather to community leadership providing the latter with essential insights needed to keep Corte Bella relevant, thriving, and a great place to live now and into the future.

Corte Bella Vets Happenings Karen R. Starkman One tenet of the Corte Bella Vets mission is to support Veterans and their families within the Northwest Valley. We achieve this by assisting with rent, mortgage, utility, and car payments. In addition, we provide monetary support and gift cards to transitional housing for formerly homeless veterans who are transitioning back to the civilian world. Our fundraisers (including our March 21, 2021, 7th annual golf tournament and our Monte Carlo Night on February 27, 2021) will continue this focus on ending Veteran homelessness, suicide prevention, and treatment of PTSD and traumatic brain injuries. Tickets for our Monte Carlo night will go on sale beginning October 1, 2020. If you purchase your ticket prior to January 1, 2021, the price will be $40; after January 1st, the ticket price will be $50. Your ticket price will include a SWAG Bag, $200 in

Play Vouchers, One Free Drink and Light Snacks. There will also be a 50/50 raffle, a raffle to win a stunning diamond necklace (appraised at $3,790), a “wine pull” raffle to win a bottle of wine (retail value between $25 - $150), and a silent auction. After October 1st, you will be able to purchase your event ticket, including raffle tickets on the Corte Bella Vets website by clicking on the Monte Carlo Tab. In addition, you will be able to view auction items, be able to bid on those items, and access information to the three charities which we will be supporting this night. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions and the increased mail costs, the Corte Bella Vets will not be supporting the annual Christmas Stocking Event for our Deployed troops. We will, however, be working once again with the SunDome Plaza Merchants Association with our Angel Tree for Veterans Project. As in the past, Christmas Trees will be put up in front of various Plaza merchants from November 15 thru December 15.

SOuL Collects Items for the Homeless in the West Valley

Salvation Army Captain Kathy Merritt accepts a donation from SOuL President Carla Smith. The Sun Cities Salvation Army Corps brought back children into their facility in September and immediately began filling a need for those students who are distance learning and having issues with this type of learning program. The Salvation Army has a computer lab and a newly hired Youth Specialist (a teacher and a coach) to offer a much needed tutoring program. SOuL (Corte Bella’s women’s charity support organization) donated $500 towards the purchase of 6 additional “flexible seating” for these students to use during “class”. According to

In September, SOuL members responded to a need from the I-Help (Interfaith Homeless Emergency Lodging Program) by collecting donations from the membership of undergarments (for both men and women) and small toiletries (see photo). These donations are being used to support the I-HELP program in Surprise that works with the homeless population here in the West Valley providing shelter and additional services.

Gliding Sliders and Other Stuff Ask Agnes Whatever the title suggested to you, this isn’t about tiny burgers or sliding falls. This is about doors and windows! Here in Arizona, we get a lot of dust in the air. The silt-like grit that fills our windows and sliding door tracks is an annoyance, especially during the monsoon season.

So, the best advice I can give for home maintenance in that area is the following: Get a very cheap paintbrush and brush the tracks of your window and door sliders, loosening the silt. Use your vacuum with a crevice tool to suck up all that silt. Then use a damp microfiber cloth to get the remainder of the gunk. Follow that with a cloth or paper towel saturated with some WD40. More black may come off on the cloth. Go over it a few times for good measure. Slide the window or door back and forth a few times to get the rollers lubricated. Notice the difference? This should be done regularly, perhaps once a month.

The second thing I wanted to mention is regarding the HVAC thermostats which were original equipment in these homes. They are able to be set to exchange the indoor air for outdoor air by setting the “fan” for intervals. In this virus era, fresh air is important. If you’ve misplaced your owner’s manual or if you’ve never had one, a manual can be downloaded from TOTALINE.com. If you have converted to NEST, then you can just set up an interval for the fan by turning and clicking in the appropriate settings. Get ALEXA to do it… Or you can “Ask Agnes.”

Mike Verhoeks, a Creative “Craftsman” Linda Wright Mike Verhoeks is very quick to state that he doesn’t consider himself an artist, but rather he feels he is a craftsman. The definition of that word is “ a person who practices or is highly skilled in a craft.” Mike is without a doubt very skilled at what he creates, which is hand-thrown, highquality pottery decorated with crystalline glazes. His pieces are unique in the colors and the surface design that result from the formation of Willemite (zine silicate) crystals within the glaze. There are distinct minerals that are associated with each color and his “storeroom” is filled with containers that read like a laboratory. Mike’s place of birth was Kankakee, Illinois, along the river of the same name. He is married with two children (a son and a daughter) and five grandchildren, whom all reside in the Phoenix area. Mike is a trained geophysicist who worked in many countries during his career, and he is still a consultant in oil and gas seismic exploration. Mike and his wife, Elizabeth, have lived in Corte Bella since 2010. From an early age, Mike felt the pull of creating something from clay, and he has been working with that medium since he was 10 years old. He has a potter’s wheel at his studio located in a artist co-op in Surprise and additional workspace at home in his

garage. He describes his experience with pottery as a life-long journey in which he is constantly learning, improving and gaining the perspective that allows him to improve his product. Mike talks with enthusiasm about ‘”pushing the clay to its limits” to see what he can fashion. He truly loves the classical shapes and forms (more than bowls and plates) such as full-blown vases and bottle forms. Mike speaks of the “sensuous aspect” of working with clay. His inspiration comes from the possibilities of the process that he uses to “grow” the colored crystals in the glaze for each piece of pottery. This involves a very precise and exact application of the glaze with zinc and carefully controlled firing cycles to develop the crystals and their formation that appears within the finished glaze. Mike waxes a bit philosophical when he talks about how each of us is made in the image of our creator and how we all have creative aspects to our personalities. He delights in his craft and believes he has a long way to go in his life-long pursuit of perfection and mastery of this endeavor. His dream at this time is to have his work in ten or twelve galleries. At present, he has pieces at the Mesa Center for the Arts, a shop in Chandler, and soon to be at Esteban’s in the Tlaquepaque Arts and Shopping Center in Sedona. Please see his website www.saltriverstoneware.com to view more of his work or call him at (603) 520-7144 for more information. Corte Bella is so blessed with many different people with amazing talents and abilities. Its exciting to see what our residents are doing in their “retired” years.

Birds in Paradise (Part Ten) Jeanne Gowan & Nate Gowan The Fall migration of birds is underway in Corte Bella. Migration is triggered by shorter days, lower temperatures, and decreased food supplies. Many species cover thousands of miles during their migration. First-year birds often make their way to their winter home alone, despite never having seen it before. The secrets of their amazing navigational skills are complex. Birds use several types of senses when navigating. They get compass directions from the sun and the stars. They also use the earth’s magnetic field and position of the setting sun. They are truly amazing navigators. In our backyard, we observed a Black-headed Grosbeak, a bird that summers in Canada and the northern United States before heading back to its tropical winter spot. These birds seek habitats with large trees during the summer and most likely found Corte Bella’s trees a very desirable resting area. We were also lucky to spot a very rare bird for our area, a Blackthroated Gray Warbler. These birds breed in pine forests and look for similar habitats during migration. Corte Bella’s trees were most certainly the attraction for this visitor.

Black-throated Gray Warbler To date, we have spotted sixty (60) different species of birds in our yard. During the full moon cycle in early September, it was estimated that over 10,000 birds would migrate through our area every night. So, grab your binoculars, sit outside, enjoy some welcome cooler weather and look for some traveling visitors.
