ASSOCIATION
Place the Past Behind You Look to a Brighter Future I hope everyone had a nice holiday season. Of course, things were a little different this year than in the past. But we made it through. Hopefully you were able to enjoy each other and you are ready to press on into the new year with a positive attitude. I want to assure everyone that the effort and desire to make our new year the
Mike Arrington, General Manager
best it can be is alive and well. We will continue to do everything in our power to get things back to normal for you. Our facilities continue to be among the safest and most sanitary around. We are keeping up with all of the latest government requirements in order to keep your facilities open and useable. We all understand how important it is to you to have what you pay for at your disposal as often and as normal as possible. As we move further into 2021, our commitment to you is of the utmost importance, and you are our number one priority. The HOA Board of Directors continues to work very hard on your behalf as well, with your interests and safety in mind. By now you should have received the “call for candidates” for the 2021 election that culminates on March 1st with the newly chosen Board of Directors. Our annual meeting of the members is scheduled for March 1st, and the venue will be either in person or electronic via the Zoom format. That venue has not been determined at this time due to the pandemic conditions that exist
and relative restrictions in place. Both online and paper ballot options will be available to you again this year so you may cast your vote. The bottom line is that both the annual meeting and election will happen one way or another, regardless of where this pandemic takes us. We have the capability in place at this time to ensure both happen on time and as scheduled. Obviously, it is always better to meet in person but the reality is that most HOAs can’t meet in that fashion right now and probably won’t be able to do so for a while. As usual, Corte Bella leads the way and is once again on the cutting edge of how the HOAs are operating under these adverse conditions. In fact, Corte Bella, your Board, and the HOA staff have not missed a beat. The HOA is light years ahead of where most other HOAs are at this time, even with all of the adversity experienced in 2020, and it has been very significant at times. All things considered, the health of your HOA is excellent, and your business is being conducted by a very capable Board and staff. Once again, we have worked together as a team and complimented each other well. That relationship has been ongoing for some time now. Thank you to the HOA Board for how well they have handled everything to ensure that Corte Bella residents were not unnecessarily impacted during this time. Good luck to all in the new year. We will continue to operate with the most positive outcome in mind for you as members of the association. I hope you will all support your HOA and each other to help make 2021 a fantastic year for all. Thank you for all you have weathered and how you managed to do it. Have a great 2021!

Board Talk
By the time you read this, 2020 will be behind us and for that, I think we are all grateful! To say it was a challenging year would be an understatement. As a board, we were tasked with making some very difficult decisions which affected every resident here in
Kathy Carmickle Corte Bella. While those decisions may not have been popular, they were made with the best intentions to minimize risk to the community.
In spite of the difficulties we faced last year, both personally and as board members, we did accomplish a number of things. They are: 1. We started the year with $180,169.44 in our Capital Reserve Fund. You’ll remember we made the decision in 2019 to increase the Capital Improvement Fee to 110% of the annual assessment which is collected every time a house in Corte Bella sells. As of October 31st, the latest data available, we have $502,656.84 in funding for capital improvements. 2. General Reserves are robust with a balance as of October 31st of $4,778,717.75, an increase of $746,634.02 from the beginning of the year. You will find an article which clearly speaks to our reserve funds by Joel Block, Finance Committee Chair, in this edition of the CB Times. 3. Our operating income remains strong. We started the year at $1,512,265.46 and the latest data we have shows the balance to be $1,632,269.52 The result here is nothing short of amazing when you consider we had to shut everything down for a few months, had carryout only at the Anacapa for a time, and haven’t had any HOA Events or private functions since March. And while our income from the restaurant and spa have been impacted by COVID–19 and the closures, we still have not dipped into our retained earnings. Kudos to our General Manager, Mike Arrington, his staff, and our Finance Committee for their strong management of our finances. Monthly financials are loaded to our website once approved by the Finance Committee and Board. Feel free to review them at your leisure, if you have an interest.
4. Finally, from a financial perspective, we transitioned our At Risk Investments to Morgan Stanley, rather than relying on our well-qualified volunteer Investment Subcommittee. We did so recognizing our portfolio was both complex and significant. We felt it was a prudent decision to move the At-Risk Investments to a licensed professional who has access to tools and analytics our volunteers simply do not have. As a reminder, our Investment Policy restricts At Risk Investments to no more than 15% of our total portfolio and we monitor that closely. 5. The Long-Term Planning Committee launched a survey for all residents to gauge the manner in which our facilities are used. More input from our residents and better communication from the Board has been an area where we felt improvement was needed, and we are working to achieve that goal. The last survey of our residents took place more than 5 years ago and, as our demographic changes, so do our wants and needs. We hope you took the opportunity to complete and submit your thoughts. 6. Our Technology Committee put together a proposal to allow for purchase of event tickets online using the Jonas system we have in place at the Anacapa. In addition to the online purchase of event tickets, the implementation of the proposal would also permit residents to make reservations at the Anacapa, make reservations for court time, and pay their social accounts. Not only would this give our residents a more convenient vehicle to purchase tickets and pay for them, it gives us a better way to track participation and develop analytics for future events. 7. Our Finance Committee kicked off a project to investigate changes to the way we use Jonas which should provide more comprehensive data related to the Anacapa. The thought is we may be able to better track inventory, dining trends and event expenses, as well as the granular income from HOA Events. There is much to be done this year and your help is welcome! Early in 2021, our GM has already put out the call for candidates for the Board of Directors. This year there will be four openings: two openings for a three year term and two openings for a two year term. The By-Law Revision passed in 2020 changed the structure of our board terms to allow for continuity as new board members are elected. Now is your chance to take an active role in the direction of this vibrant community in which we live. When the call for candidates comes out, I encourage you to step up and help shape our future. I hope you all had a happy and healthy Holiday Season and please accept my best wishes for a much improved 2021!

ASSOCIATION
From the Editor’s Desk It’s 2021 - thank goodness for that! With the new year, the CB Times is entering its 13th year of continuous publication. I’ve been involved with our Corte Bella magazine for an extended period of time having
Linda Wright, Editor CB Times
served twice as editor. When I look on the web for statistics and opinions on the value of “local” magazines, the main emphasis is on the local magazine’s ability to engage and inspire the niche audience being reached. I truly believe that each of our magazine issues is a relevant and positive voice for our community. And, when done right, a printed copy of a local magazine is a wonderful experience and something worthy of space on your coffee table. We are fortunate with our publisher, LionTree Communications, that we have superior layout and printing expertise working for us every month. The support received from this publisher for each issue has been outstanding. It’s been a true pleasure to work closely with this company and its staff.
Because content for this magazine is a volunteer effort, the interest and the support from so many community members has been integral to the magazine’s success. Every aspect, from the cover photography to the smallest article regarding some aspect of Corte Bella life, comes from residents. There are (and have been in the past) many contributing authors that have been submitting articles and photos for an extended period of time. Each contribution is important and vital to what makes this magazine a meaningful tribute to Corte Bella life. Proofreading is a skill, and there is a team of resident volunteers who assist with this task for every issue. Their assistance is so appreciated and necessary as we try to put forth the best possible product. Thank you to all who have contributed to the CB Times for the past 12 years. Hopefully, you’ll continue to send in the quality articles and photos during this year and beyond. As editor, I thank you for making it a fairly easy task to get content for the 10 yearly issues together. Thank you again to our publisher and his layout staff for their professional guidance and production. Happy New Year to all. Corte Bella life is the best.
A Message For The New Year 2021 While 2020 was faced with many challenges and disappointments for the Lifestyle department, I believe that 2021 will be a better year. While there is still uncertainty on what our next few months hold, I am planning and scheduling future events with an optimistic attitude!
Pam Lawrence, Corte Bella HOA Lifestyle Manager Moving forward, I have already planned to have the Comedy Shows, weekly Food trucks, Spring training game, Farmers
Markets, Shredding Event, Spring Marketplace, Barleens Arizona Opry, Sunday Cabaret, Concerts, Turf Paradise trip, day trip to Prescott, day trip to the Grand Canyon, wine trip, and new and different day trips in the Phoenix area and around the state, to name a few. Hopefully these events will take place and we can get back to the lifestyle we all miss so much. It is important that events get scheduled far in advance and get onto “the calendar.” These can always be canceled in a timely fashion, but scheduling any of these takes planning and time. I miss all of you, and I want to thank everyone for their support and understanding at a very difficult time. I’m wishing everyone at Corte Bella a healthy and safe Happy New Year!

CULINARY
Quicker Rosemary White Bean Cassoulet
Anacapa Executive Chef Dan Haywood
Ingredients:
2 tbsp olive oil 1 strips bacon, chopped 4 oz sausage, chopped 1 cup white onion, fine diced 1 cup carrot, fine diced 1 stalk celery, fine diced 2 cloves garlic, chopped 1 tsp rosemary, chopped 1 tsp thyme, chopped 1 large tomato, chopped 3 cups white beans, cooked ¾ cup chicken broth ½ cup bread crumbs ¼ cup parmesan cheese 2 oz butter 1 tbsp chopped parsley 4 sprigs rosemary 1 rack of lamb cut into chops – 8 Olive oil Salt and pepper to taste
Method: In a medium size sauté pot or pan on medium heat, add oil and sauté bacon until just browning. Add sausage and sauté until just cooked. Add vegetables and garlic and continue to sauté for 5-6 minutes until starting to soften. Add tomatoes and herbs. Sauté one minute more. Add beans and chicken stock. Bring to boil. Lower heat to a low simmer and allow to cook until liquid is almost absorbed, about 10-15 minutes. Remove from heat. In a separate small pan, add butter and heat over medium heat. Add bread crumbs and sauté until the bread crumbs are lightly toasted. Sprinkle bread crumbs and cheese over the top of beans. While the beans are cooking, add olive oil in a sauté pan at high heat. Sauté seasoned lamb chops on one side for 2-3 minutes. Then turn over for an additional 2 minutes until cooked medium rare(125 degrees). Remove from heat and set aside. Spoon the beans in the center of 4 plates, and arrange 2 chops on top of each. Sprinkle with parmesan cheese, chopped parsley, and add a rosemary sprig.

CULINARY
Cherie Hollaway, Committed and Competent As the Assistant Food and Beverage Manager since March 2018, Cherie Hollaway has experienced quite a lot, both positive and challenging. Through it all, she remains enthusiastic about her position and the services that are offered to Corte Bella’s residents through the Anacapa. She is hopeful and confident regarding the new year and how her role will contribute to a successful restaurant operation in 2021.
quick commute to Corte Bella from her home in Vistancia, and she knew she had the experience to succeed. She believes that common values and similar management styles allowed her to integrate quickly into the Anacapa team and thrive there. The way Cherie tells it, her career chose her, not the other way around. She gained skills from a variety of food service jobs to include bartending in a California family run sports bar, managing at a Ruby Tuesday’s in Virginia, a managing role at the Fox and Hound Sports Bar in Memphis, and a management position at the Hilton Squaw Peak resort in Phoenix. Finding this job at Corte Bella suits her perfectly, and she sees herself remaining here indefinitely. Cherie loves interacting with the Corte Bella residents and patrons of the Anacapa. She finds the relationships she has established valuable and rewarding. She looks at the Anacapa staff as her family. She feels that both her co-workers and the restaurant patrons actually listen to you and share common experiences easily. Cherie very much enjoyed the work involved with the banquet and special events that were common for the food and beverage operation before the corona virus pandemic hit. During the difficult months from March to December 2020, Cherie was very impressed by, and grateful for, the support shown by the Corte Bella community for the Anacapa’s services. She was thankful for the outstanding response to the curb-side service and for the support for in-house dining under the current virus mitigation restrictions. She thanks all of Corte Bella for their trust and continued patronage.
Cherie was born in the very small town of Boron, California and her father was a millwright in the Borax mining operations there. Her mother, a Federal civil service employee at Edwards Air Force Base, was involved with the B52 Stealth Bomber development program. Cherie attended local schools, graduating from high school in 1988. She had planned on attending college but life got in the way of those plans. Cherie has two adult daughters (ages 33 and 30 from a previous marriage) who live in California and Arizona. Cherie and her husband have an 18 year old daughter who will graduate high school in December under an early graduation program. Cherie is very proud that her daughter will join the U.S. Coast Guard in early 2021. Cherie and her husband moved to Arizona 2015 from Memphis, Tennessee when her spouse needed to relocate because of his work in the aerospace industry. A phone call from Executive Chef Dan Haywood was what brought Cherie to an interview for her current position. Cherie felt an immediate, natural connection with both Chef and Jill Machay, Food and Beverage Manager. She was thrilled with
During the pandemic and its impact on daily life, Cherie realized the importance of simplifying her life and letting go of things that really don’t matter. She has a new-found appreciation of online shopping and grocery pickup services. She isn’t good with drastic change as a rule but decided she would remain positive, help others adapt, and contribute towards good morale for her team. She realized the importance of being flexible with work assignments and the need for cross-training of staff. Cherie is committed to her employment at Corte Bella and is looking forward to the proposed remodel and possible expansion of the restaurant facility. She isn’t the kind of person that makes new year’s resolutions generally. However, this year she is resolving to make sure to travel and see family in California and Tennessee. She would also like to visit Hawaii and possibly Mexico, as well see more of other parts of the U.S.A. Cherie is here for the long haul, and Corte Bella is fortunate to have her and her expertise working for us.

About Wine: How Old Is Too Old? Deborah Damery Lazear, CSW We are never too old to drink wine! But storing wine in a way that keeps it as wine, rather than transforming into vinegar or jam has been a challenge for thousands of years. The ancient Greeks mixed wine with honey (as a preservative ), poured olive oil on top (as a barrier to air), and stored it in large ceramic amphorae buried in the ground to keep the wine cool. In the sixteenth century much of the wine traded throughout Europe was fortified with brandy to preserve it. The wine’s place of origin didn’t matter as much as having the raw wine fortified so it would reach England from afar still in a drinkable state. Storage in bottles became practice in the eighteenth century when corks came into use. Laying a wine down to better it took on romantic and sophisticated connotations. Wine doesn’t care if it is stored in an expensive custom made cellar or in a back room as long as 1) the environment is cool, 2)the bottle is lying its side and, 3) there is no direct sunlight.
develop for 20 to 25 years; it also costs over $100 a bottle.
bottom of the bottle leaving the wine thin and unsatisfying.
We also found a few 2014 Cabs. Drink now! Also uncovered a 2008 Chianti of a mid-quality; too late. We opened it anyway and the vibrant color had dropped out and turned rather rusty. What a shame! It was clearly past its prime and almost not drinkable. The tannins had dropped to the
So what is the bottom line here? It is a new year and I have a resolution to share. Look at your wine bottles, identify the older ones, and enjoy them now. This is the perfect time to treat ourselves. What are we waiting for?
Wine stored in a warm 75F temperature will age twice as fast as the ideal temperature range of 55F to 58F. Wine that matures too quickly will also deteriorate quickly. While this is interesting information, most of us buy wine, bring it home, and within the month it is gone! I checked my wine storage unit the other day and came across some red wine dated from 2009. It wasn’t a prized Bordeaux or Burgundy. With COVID-19 here and staying home safer than going out, we have had more time to review our wines. White wines generally should be enjoyed within 3-4 years. Red wines vary from 6 years to 60. Quite a range. The tannin in the wine is the main preservative so an expensive Bordeaux or rock star Napa Cabernet with significant tannin will age longer and develop more complexity. The Red Blends, Zinfandel, and everyday California or New Zealand Pinot Noir may peak in 6-8 years, then go downhill after that. Same goes for that $10.00 Shiraz from Australia. A Grange Shiraz, also from Australia, will continue to

Your Website Profile CB Web Team All Corte Bella website users’ accounts are controlled through their profile which consists of three parts, 1) Sign-in Information, 2) Directory & Contact Information, and 3) Emergency Contacts. It is important to keep all three of these sections up-to-date. Why? Primarily so that your account works whenever you log into the Corte Bella website, and so that you receive all the HOAgenerated e-mails that you wish to receive. To access your profile on the website left-click the My Profile tab in the main menu and then selecting Edit My Profile in the drop-down menu. 1. Sign-In Information: The most important part of this section is your password. You should use a strong password (at least eight characters and a mix of capital and small letters, numbers, and special characters) and you should change your password at least once a year. 2. Directory and Contact Information: The most important entry in this section is your e-mail address. The address listed in this section is the one used by the HOA to send you information via e-mail. If you’ve changed e-mail addresses since creating your account, you will need to change the e-mail address in this section. Furthermore, the e-mail and phone numbers listed here
will appear in the Resident Directory (if you choose to make them public. If you choose not to make them public then only your name and address will appear in the Resident Directory.) The Communication Preferences sub-section allows you to tailor the types of e-mails you wish to receive from the HOA. It also allows you to opt out of receiving any HOA-generated e-mails. 3. Emergency Contacts: This is exactly what it sounds like – a list of up to three persons to contact in an emergency. It’s always a good idea to have these contacts and to keep the telephone numbers up-to-date. Please check your profile in your website user account periodically to make sure that it is up-to-date and that it contains the information you want it to contain. Don’t forget to change your password at least annually. Photo: Tristan Mathews

Corte Bella Reserve Funds 101 Joel Block, Finance Committee Chair Corte Bella has 3 Reserve Funds. They are: 1)
“Repair and Replacement Fund (R&R Reserve Fund)”
2)
“Street Reserve Fund”
3) “Capital Acquisition and Improvement Fund (Capital Reserve Fund)”
would grow by $192,931 in 2021. Note that $0.00 dollars come from your homeowner’s assessment in 2021 for “Capital Reserve Funds”. So, the answer to the question “Will my homeowners assessment fees go up if we remodel or do an addition to the Corte Bella facilities?” is: No, they will not.
Let’s look at each of these funds. •
“R&R Reserve Fund” - covers the repair, replacement, restoration or maintenance of existing or acquired assets. Some examples are pool pump, air conditioner, computers, carpeting, fitness equipment, or a chair in the Anacapa. The underground irrigation system for our common areas are also covered by this fund.
Every asset is given a “useful life in years”, and monies are collected annually to repair or replace each asset at the end of its useful life, if needed. For example, if an asset has a 10 - year life, then 1/10th of the estimated replacement cost would be collected each year, so it would be fully funded in the 10th year. Assets are not always replaced at the end of their useful life. Some assets could last many years past their “useful life”. The projected quarterly assessment for the “R&R Reserve Fund” in 2021 was $65, but because the “R&R Reserve Fund” was overfunded due to better than expected returns in previous years, we reduced the “R&R Reserve Fund” assessment in 2021 to $36 per quarter. •
“Street Reserve Fund” – covers the repair, replacement, restoration and maintenance of our streets.
In 2019 it was determined we were underfunding what was needed to fund the “Street Reserve Fund” per the street study that was ordered by the CBCCA Board. Like the 2020 “Street Reserve Fund” assessment, the 2021 assessment will also be larger than normal. The 2021 “Street Reserve Fund” quarterly assessment will be $83 per quarter. •
“Capital Reserve Fund” – is only used to purchase, construct or acquire additions to the common property, or other assets of the association that exceed $5,000 in total cost, and have a useful life of three years or more. For example, when we purchased the street lights from APS we used money from this fund.
Over the last number of years, the Board and committees have put a lot of effort into looking at future projects in Corte Bella, whether that be expansion of current facilities or totally new ideas. Whatever it is, the “Capital Reserve Fund“ will furnish the funds. All new funds added to the “Capital Reserve Fund” come from fees assessed from sales of homes. Every time a home sells in Corte Bella a fee equal to 110% of the annual assessment is collected. Starting in 2021 that fee is $2,297 per home sale. If Corte Bella would average 7 home sales per month, the fund

SOuL’s Christmas “Work” The dedicated women of Smiling Out Loud (SOuL) faced the challenge of fund raising during a pandemic without hesitation. With creative ideas flowing, the organization made decisions that provided wonderful results, thanks to the support of the Corte Bella community. The decorative mailbox swags were a hit with our residents. All the prepared swags were sold, which raised $3,347.00. SOuL’s special commission holiday gift baskets raised another $1,020.00. Our annual Holiday Boutique (the scaled down, “outof-doors- with-virus-mitigation-restrictions” version) brought
in $471.00 for the raffle basket and $1,256.00 for the crafts sale. SOuL is delighted that these two fund raising efforts have provided $6,094.00 in total for our organization. SOuL wishes to thank the Corte Bella community for its support for their recent events. Because of these sucesses, our organization can continue to support worthy organizations and charities in the West Valley. Thank you all for attending our boutique and for decorating your mailboxes with our swags. May your new year shine brighter because of your generosity and kindness.

Smiling Out Loud (SOuL) Gives Back In November, the members of SOuL held a food drive to collect non-perishable food items, paper goods and canned goods. This drive was held to provide food assistance to identified families at the Thompson Ranch Elementary School on El Mirage Road, just a short distance from the gates of Corte Bella. Four SUVs were fully loaded with the donations. Then, just before Thanksgiving,
SOuL once again provided help to Thompson Ranch Elementary and their annual Turkey Trot special event. SOuL donated the large turkey and the pies required for the event’s prizes. SOuL believes that helping our immediate area neighbors is the best kind of assistance.

The Salvation Army Christmas Angels Say “Thank you Corte Bella” Pam Lawrence, Lifestyle Manager If the thought of a child receiving a Christmas gift they dreamt about (and never thought they might actually get on Christmas morning) makes you smile, then most likely you participated in the Corte Bella Salvation Army Christmas Angel Tree project. Thank you to each Corte Bella resident who helped to make those Christmas dreams come true for less fortunate children residing in the West Valley. As is the case each year, the reception area of the Fitness Center filled with boxes, bags and bicycles throughout the month-long collection. Thank you for your generosity and kindness to those children who might not have a Christmas without these gifts. Happy New Year and thank you again for making our community shine far outside the front gates. Corte Bella is wonderful and you all are amazing people.

Thank You, Corte Bella! San Ramon Stringers for 2020 Are Grateful The Christmas lights on San Ramon Drive were shining brightly for the annual Walk About Night and weekend, beginning on Friday, December 4th. This year, the San Ramon Stringers decided to continue featuring the Salvation Army Red Kettle charity collection throughout the entire weekend (Saturday and Sunday too), rather than just the one night. Thanks to the generosity of our residents and others, the amount donated was $12,752.00, which has been presented to the Salvation Army Sun Cities Corps. Please accept the gratitude of the fifty “Stringers” homes that spent weeks preparing the magnificent display of lights and features. Corte Bella should be very proud that our community will donate these funds to help those who are truly needy in the West Valley. This year there were many more viewers that stayed in their vehicles (cars and golf carts) as compared to those who walked the decorated street. Regardless of the venue chosen, the Christmas display was enthusiastically received and appreciated. This annual display marks the beginning of the Christmas season for Corte Bella and is enjoyed throughout the month of December. This major effort on the part of the residents of San Ramon and neighboring streets to create a wonderland of holiday lights is an amazing annual gift to all of Corte Bella. Dear Stringers, your community thanks each of you for your creativity and kindness.
Yes, We Can Get Frost Ask Agnes It’s not too often, but we can get frost here in the desert. Sometimes it’s a hard frost. I remember a number of years ago we had such a hard frost that outdoor irrigation pipes froze. At our house, we had 2 irrigation caps that froze and blew off. Many other homeowners had similar problems. At the time we were lucky to get replacement caps almost immediately and install them. For weeks, area plumbers were struggling to get parts to help homeowners sort out their issues. Since then, many homeowners have wrapped their outdoor irrigation pipes and caps with Styrofoam insulation and black
tape to secure the insulation. That solves the problem. We’re probably due for a rewrap at our house as the sun is hard on outdoor materials like plastic tape and foam wrap. You can find these supplies at most hardware stores or Home Depot and Lowe’s. Stay warm and Happy New Year!

Birds in Paradise (Part 13) Nate and Jeanne Gowan Golf courses (especially ones with ponds) attract a large variety of birds in the winter, and the pond on Corte Bella’s fairway No. 12 is alive with visiting “snow birds”. In the past few weeks, we have observed Ring-necked Ducks, American Wigeons, Canvasbacks, Mallards, Redheads, Northern Pintails, Lesser Scaup, Ruddy Ducks, American Coots, Canada Geese and Pied-billed Grebes on this pond. What attracts them? Food of course, and the golf course ponds are a buffet for ducks which are classified into two categories: dabblers and divers. You can tell them apart by the way they eat, fly and walk. Dabblers (also called Puddle Ducks) ride high along the water, skimming the surface for food. They’ll tip their head underwater and stick their bottoms straight up in the air while feeding on plants and insects. Dabblers like Mallards and Wigeons have feet centered on their body which makes it easy to walk on land. American Wigeon (dabbler)
Redhead (diver) Divers like Canvasbacks, Redheads and Ring-necked Ducks have legs at the back of their body and larger feet for diving and swimming. But those large feet make walking awkward. They will dive and stay under water for 10 to 20 seconds to feed on fish, snails and invertebrates. Dabblers wings are bigger which allows them to shoot straight up out of the water like a rocket. Smaller wings on Divers make taking flight more of a runway-like approach, with fast wing beats and feet moving across the water until they reach enough speed for ascent. These two distinct “lift offs” should help you to identify the ducks on the golf course ponds. But bring a pair of binoculars in the golf cart so you can really enjoy the distinct beauty of our winter visitors. Venturing just outside Corte Bella along Deer Valley Road to the golf course ponds there, we sighted other birds including Great Blue Herons, Greens Herons, Belted Kingfishers, Great Egrets and Double-crested Cormorants. A recent rare sighting was the Black Crowned Night Heron. Photos: Nate Gowan
