ASSOCIATION

Corte Bella’s New Board By now, you have a different Board of Directors than you did a week ago because of the annual election that ended on March 1st at the Annual Membership Meeting. There were four open positions on the board coming in to this year’s election and 14 candidates competing for one of those positions. At the time this article was due to the publisher, the winners had not been

Mike Arrington, General Manager

determined yet. Of the four positions available, the two candidates receiving the most votes were elected for three-year terms. The candidates receiving the third and fourth most votes were elected to serve two-year terms. This is the first time Corte Bella have elected directors to three-year terms, and that is due to a change in the By-Laws during the 2020 election voting. This staggering of terms, ensures that Corte Bella will never again have a majority

of the board up for election at the same time. This change was to help prevent the stacking of the board with like-minded ideology. The four newly elected Directors will be seated at the April 1st Organizational Meeting where the Board will also elect the officers of the Board, including President, Vice President, and Treasurer. At that time, the Board will also determine which board members will become or remain liaisons to the Corte Bella committees. From there, we are on our way with the new board in place and responsible for making all decisions affecting the association and you as a member. The board will hold monthly open board meetings with an occasional special meeting when needed. All meeting dates and times are posted on the website at Cortebella.net, and notices are sent out by email blast for each committee and Board meeting. The notices are sent out at least 48 hours in advance. Hopefully, the board meetings will be held live and in-person at that time. If not, then the Zoom venue will be available to you. We look forward to seeing you one way or another. Good luck to the new Board of Directors moving forward into 2021. I look forward to serving the 2021 Board of Directors.

2020 Amenities Survey – Part 2 – HOA Events HOA Event Participation

Long-Term Planning Committee

450

Last month we published the top-tier results of the 2020 Amenities Survey for the eight amenities. This month we’re featuring the second half of the survey – HOA Events. As you can see from the following charts, all events have been well-attended. Comments confirm this as well as indicating overwhelming community support for the amount and the variety of events on offer. Our Lifestyle Director, Pam Lawrence, has done a first-rate job in her brief time here. We’re all anticipating enjoying these events again once authorities begin to remove the restrictions currently in place. Some movement in this direction has already taken place, and Pam has acted quickly to bring back the Farmer’s markets, blood donation drives, and the vendors fairs. Get out and enjoy these events and stay tuned for more.

From the Editor’s Desk March brings St. Patrick’s Day, the beginning of Daylight Savings Time for other states on March 8th (not us here in Arizona!), the Vernal/Spring Equinox on March 19th with the

Linda Wright, Editor CB Times promise of Spring’s renewal, and our community association’s annual membership meeting on March 1st and the election of new directors to the governing board.

I hope all association members exercised their voting rights and that attendance for the annual meeting will be high. Much was

accomplished by our Board of Directors in 2020 during very difficult circumstances related to the ongoing virus pandemic. Thank you sincerely to those volunteers serving as directors for the past term of office. Your personal sacrifice and dedication are sincerely appreciated by your fellow residents. Best wishes to the residents who will be elected to serve on the board. Thank you for volunteering to work for the community as we move forward. Challenges remain, but that’s almost always the case. Corte Bella remains strong financially and the future looks bright. Let’s all work together to keep our community a desirable place to live. Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at the Anacapa with the “wearing of the green.” Until next month, enjoy the beginning of Spring and all the beauty of Corte Bella.

Corte Bella Wine Adventurers Hit The Road Deborah Damery Lazear, CSW Spring is the perfect time for a road trip, especially if you are a wine lover. Many Corte Bella residents will be driving north to their summer homes anyway, so why not? Each state’s wine regions have comprehensive web sites with maps, lodging recommendations, dates of the many Wine and Food festivals, as well as local restaurants. Google on the State +Winery. Boom! You are all set. I do suggest calling ahead to be sure they are open for tasting. Before you hit the road, check out the offerings on your route. Let’s look into some lesser known wine regions that can be destinations or stops along your longer journey. Almost none of these wines are easily purchased in Arizona. We will explore briefly seven states, some of their most popular wine grapes, and other points of interest. Starting in Ohio, this state has six wine trails (visit Ohio_Wine_ Producers_Association.com for maps and more information). ones we are familiar with like Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Riesling. In addition, they specialize in hybrids with names to become familiar with such as La Crescent, Marechal Foch, Marquette, Traminett, Vidal, and Vignoles. If you are headed that way, check out the wine video series with Laure Faila. Ohio’s Wine and Food festival is held the first weekend of August each year. May is Wine Month in Michigan with more than 13,000 acres of vineyards. Besides grapes grown for juice, they grow wine grapes like Riesling, Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Pinot Grigio. Set on a shore of the Great Lakes, this massive body of water influences the climate, making it temperate enough to protect grapes from early frost and preventing spring crops from blooming too early. Lake-effect snow also insulates the vines from extremely cold temperatures. There are 5 American Viticultural Areas (AVA) in Michigan. The state excels at producing big, jammy-red varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. The Leelanau Peninsula produces white varieties such as Pinot Blanc, Pinot Grigio, and Riesling. Award-winning hybrid grape wines such as Marquette, Frontenac, and Vidal Blanc can be found further inland. If visiting, don’t miss the opportunity to try their ice wine at Burgdorf Winery. The Indiana wine scene is a casual event with a relaxed Hoosier style. Downtown Indianapolis boasts the Vintage Indiana Wine and Food Festival held annually in June. For more info. visit www.vintageindiana.com. Over forty wineries dot the Indiana landscape. Many are open for tasting, tours, and picnics. The Oliver Winery, on State road 37, thirty-five miles south of Indianapolis, was founded in 1972 and is Indiana’s oldest and largest winery, family-owned and operated. They make their wines from Cabernet Sauvignon, Gewürztraminer, and Concord grapes plus many others. They even bake bread to enjoy with your picnic. Last on this tour is Wisconsin. Our neighbors treated my husband and me to a double gold-medal winning wine (Fisher King Winery, Verona Red 2017). The grape was Marechal Foch and its hue was reminiscent of Pinot Noir; garnet and translucent. It was a perfect pairing with my herb-crusted rack of lamb. Total Wine carries the Wisconsin Movo wine coolers in cans; they are worth a try. Maraqette is a grape well regarded in Wisconsin. It offers up cherry, plum, blackberry, mulberry notes with an earthy taste reminiscent of some of my favorite Rosé wines from south of France. The climate is Continental and produces Frontenac, Baco Noir, Chardonnay, Leon Millot, Marechal Foch, Seyval Blanc, and St. Croix grapes. Next month Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, and more. See you “on the road again!”

By Way Of The Islands, Stephanie Jackson Returns to Arizona Anacapa Employee of the Month

During the pandemic, she made the decision to move from Hawaii back to Arizona – “this is home”. Her grandmother (aged 86) is here and many other relatives, so she is very happy with her living arrangements. She states that she learned that no matter what happens, she will find a way to succeed and she can handle whatever life throws at her.

Stephanie Janine Jackson was born in South Phoenix and spent most of her life there until 2002 when her family (her parents and her two older brothers) moved to Maui in Hawaii. She lived in Kahului and graduated from McKinley High School in 2012. After high school, she went to the University of Maui where she graduated in 2016 with a degree in business management and culinary arts.

Stephanie’s mother is a chef and when she received a transfer to work at the Maui Beach Hotel, the entire family relocated. Her father is a general contractor in construction. Her parents remain in the islands along with one of her brothers, but TIREMENT LIVING she and a brother returned to the mainland in April 2020. Stephanie has a 3-yearold daughter, Adrianna, and her brother provides childcare while Stephanie is at work.

specials and the other menu items. She feels supported by her managers and the other staff members. Stephanie enjoys the customers and she is very glad that she has the opportunity to work in Corte Bella.

The Premier Address FOR RETIREMENT LIVING

Stephanie learned about the line cook position at the Anacapa through the internet and was interviewed by Anacapa Executive Chef Dan Haywood. She began working in Corte Bella in November of last year. Her work experience includes seven years of working as both a private chef and as morning lead chef for a bistrocafé in Maui. Her favorite cuisine is Asian (she first worked with Korean BBQ style cooking) and traditional Mexican dishes. Knowing that “Almost anyone can be happy after a good meal” helps motivate this young woman of 27 years to continue to work in the culinary field. Her daughter calls her “Mommy Chef”. Stephanie loves making people smile and feel good with the food she prepares. Her dream is to see herself as a head chef again within five years in a restaurant like the Anacapa. She loves the environment of Corte Bella and the restaurant. At times, she feels like it is much like where she worked in the islands. She loves preparing the dinner

Stephanie is a very composed and intelligent young woman – a chef and a mother. Corte Bella is fortunate to have her using her skills in the kitchen of our community restaurant. It will be interesting to see where her culinary journey with take her. The next time you see her give her a warm “Mahalo!” for her work in the kitchen and a big “Aloha!” to welcome her back home.

Retirement Planning:

Corte Bella Budget Comparison Report Joel Block, Finance Chair and Kathy Carmickle, Treasurer The figures below tell the partial story of the struggle the Association waged this year due to the unprecedented economic impact of Covid 19. The budget process for 2020 began in June of 2019. The proposed budget was finalized and presented to the Corte Bella membership in October of 2019 long before we had heard of Corona Virus. We budget based on historical financial data and estimates related to our expenses and incoming revenue. And, it is the the estimated revenue that’s missing in this chart. We estimated we would take in $193,300 for HOA Events, $1,434,000 in Restaurant income and $92,000 at the Fitness Center. The Association income totaled $3,305,656 resulting in a shortfall of $1,011,527. While we couldn’t have predicted the severe impact on our finances, our Finance Committee and our General Manager acted quickly to minimize the damage to our finances and, in doing so, llimited the loss to our retained earnings to just over $24,000. As a reminder, retained earnings cannot be used to cover routine expenses or reserve replacements, rather they are to be used to cover emergencies. Covid 19 certainly qualifies as an emergency. Going forward, we’ll continue to monitor expenses and work to minimize the adverse effect continued closures related to Covid have on our community and the budget.

Corte Bella Vets Happenings Karen Starkman On Saturday, March 20, the Corte Bella Vets Seventh Annual Charity Golf Tournament will again take place here at the Corte Bella Golf Course. Plan on joining us that day to have a good time with friends and neighbors while supporting Arizona’s needy veterans and veterans’ families. Join the fight to end Veteran Homelessness in Phoenix. Tournament registration details can be found on our website, https://cortebellavets.org/ golf2021. This year we are returning to the standard (not step-aside) scramble format with a 12:30 shotgun start. Liberty Buick is our Hole-n-One sponsor this year. We will have the Putting Contest, Air Cannon, and the “Buy-A-Birdie” events. We will also have a Long-Drive Pro with an opportunity for every golfer to win a Golf Trip of a Lifetime! Although we hope every golfer will make

donations at the on-course events, we are not using a “gameticket” so - bring extra “cash”. We have sponsor opportunities to fit every budget and rather than raising prices, we are including lunch and the after-round meal in the registration fee. Tournament registration and sponsorship details can be found on our website, https://cortebellavets.org/ golf2021. The results of our February 27th Monte Carlo Fundraiser will be available in the April issue of the Corte Bella Times. At this time, we would like to thank our Coordinators, Ralph and Bev Brown, their team, and all those who made this event possible. A special thank you to all who purchased raffle tickets, participated in the on-line auction and/or donated to this event. As a reminder the Corte Bella Vets continue to meet the second Tuesday of each month at 9:00am via ZOOM. The ZOOM information may be found on our website at https://cortebellavets. org/zoom-meeting-info. Please join us!

CB Veteran, Jay Yovin, To Be Interred At Arlington National Cemetery A tribute from his family and Corte Bella friends Lieutenant Colonel Joseph A. “Jay” Yovin, who served his country in the military for 28 years from 1950 to 1977, will be interred with full military honors in March of this year (2021) at Arlington National Cemetery. Jay’s many career highlights, from his enlistment in the United States Air Force in 1950 to his retirement in 1977, include his marriage in 1957 to Mary Ellen on-graduation day from pilot training. Lt. Col. Yovin’s tours in the Korean and Vietnam wars included being the Aircraft Commander in 1964 for Defense Secretary Robert McNamara’s Crew. While in Vietnam in 1970, Lt. Col. Yovin also flew in provisions and picked up troops while under attack.

His Military Service honors include the following: • • • • • • •

Distinguished Flying Cross The Air Medal (earned 5 times each with a new oak leaf cluster) The Meritorious Service Medal (earned twice each with a new oak leaf cluster) The Air Force Commendation Medal The Korean Service Medal The United Nations Service Medal The Air Force Good Conduct Medal

Following his military career, Jay became a pilot for McDonnell Douglas delivering DC-9 aircraft to customers of that firm. Jay loved golf and was the founder of “Jay’s Players” at Corte Bella, which is still in existence today. He was also very active with a Retired Military Golf Association that runs tournaments throughout the Southwest. A memorial get-together was held at Corte Bella Golf Club in December of 2019 where hundreds of his friends, his wife Mary Ellen, daughter Renae and sons, Joe and John, had a chance to show their love and respect to a great friend. A brass plaque in his honor can be found behind the 12th green at Corte Bella Golf Club.

Smiling Out Loud (SOuL) Keeps On Giving In January, the ladies of SOuL (Corte Bella’s charity support organization) voted to provide direct assistance to a number of Northwest Valley organizations using funds that were raised in December at the SOuL Holiday Boutique and other fund-raising efforts. The following donations were made: • Valley View Community Food Bank $2,000 • Street Light USA - $1,000 • Ryan’s Case for Smiles - $500 • Sun Cities Salvation Army Corps $1,500

SOul Vice President Carol Courter presents Salvation Army Associate Officers Major Irma and Francisco Flores with a donation check from SOuL.

Captain Kathy Merritt of the Sun Cities Salvation Army Corps stated that the donated funds would be used to send underprivileged children to Winter Camp in Heber, Arizona. The camp fees are $150.00 per child and this donation will go a long way towards sponsoring a child at camp. Valley View Director Jesse Ramirez indicated that the donated funds would be used to refill the food bank’s supply of the most essential food items.

SOuL President Carla Smith and SOuL Vice President Carol Courter present Jesse Ramirez, Valley View Director, with a donation. With the help of the Corte Bella community, SOuL continues to provide assistance to these worthy organizations and is making a difference here in the West Valley. Thank you for supporting SOuL and our efforts to truly “give back” to those in need outside our gates.

Grout Magic Ask Agnes Grout can be a tough maintenance item in a home. If you’ve ever been tempted to “give up” on keeping it looking like new, try this first. Gather some supplies: •

vinegar in a spray bottle,

a grout brush,

some old towels,

something soft to kneel on,

your choice of a matching color of Polyblend Grout Renew (available at Home Depot or Lowes).

It’s a bit time consuming but worth it!! First, vacuum the floor. Secondly, fill a spray bottle with vinegar and grab that grout brush. Here comes the harder part – spray the grout in a small area (maybe 3’X3’) Let it sit for about five minutes and then scrub. Dry the area with an old towel or rag. Move on and repeat.

Once the area is dry (maybe wait overnight), apply the Polyblend Grout Renew with a small paint brush or toothbrush. That will have to dry for about eight hours as well. In high traffic area, let it dry for 24 hours. There cannot be any water on this for at least 72 hours. Welcome to your “new” floor! Not only will your floor look new, the sealer will prevent further staining. Never use anything but a damp-dry mop to clean your floor. It’s the wetting of the grout that discolors it. Sellers, new owners and OCD housekeepers, rejoice!

What To Do This Summer? Donna Norton If the summer heat is the same as last year, you may want to consider an adventure into beautiful Cache Valley in northern Utah. The Summer Citizen program at Utah State University may not be up and running due to COVID-19 restrictions (they offer classes), but the off-campus housing that normally houses students will be available. The cost ranges from $2000 to $3400 for 2 to 3 months in your own furnished apartment (you bring the kitchenware, sheets, towels, and personal needs). Activities without the University involvement include golf at three local facilities or private membership at Logan Country Club ($1500 for 3 months), hiking, biking, tennis, swimming, and touring the many sites within Utah. Below find many references that you may want to check out or give Donna a call at 602-657-3949.

Corte Bella Adventure Group Steve Downing GPS record of the hike.

COVID-19 is still having a significant impact in participation with the group’s events. Most of our activities have always involved a carpool, reducing the number of vehicles at any given trailhead. Combined with the distance of some events at an hour to two hour’s drive time, it is understandable to not drive alone. More members have received their first vaccination and others already having both. Slowly, we should pick back up to pre-COVID participation and next season will hopefully be back to normal. Biking is still a biweekly event between our Sunday and Thursday rides. Our average is 12 to 12.5 miles an hour making the rides enjoyable with an opportunity for some socialization mid-point in the ride. Ride start times do vary through the season, so check with a member if you would like to join us for one of these rides. We do, on occasion, rack our bikes and ride one of the many Phoenix area bike trails. Last week’s ride took us down the New River Trail to the Grand Canal Trail. This ride took us along the State Farm Stadium grounds through some nice neighborhoods east of there. At 25.5 miles roundtrip, I consider it a training ride for the March ride to the Arizona Biltmore. State Farm Stadium bike ride.

Bob Fletcher also took a small group of us on the Hotshots Memorial Trail. This year, along the ridgeline, we actually had to cross some areas of snow cover. The steep trail down to the memorial site was a little too treacherous to descend with the current snow conditions. Maybe next year! Hotshots hike

What’s Happening in Corte Bella Valentine’s Day at the Anacapa Sunday, February 14th

It was an evening for sweethearts and beautiful music as well as a delicious menu full of amazing selections from appetizer to dessert. The Anacapa was filled with the sounds of a live violin and happy diners. It was a perfect experience for all thanks to Executive Chef Dan Haywood and his wonderful kitchen staff. Food and Beverage Manager, Jill Machay, and her front-of-thehouse staff attended to everyone’s needs. Thank you Anacapa for another special event done well!

“Fat Tuesday” Mardi Gras at the Anacapa Tuesday, February 16th

There were colorful beads and decorated masks throughout the Anacapa for the celebration of Mardi Gras 2021. Delicious offerings of Creole-style dishes from Chef Dan Haywood and his kitchen were served by Jill Machay and her crew. Special cocktails crafted just for the occasion were a hit with the diners in attendance. The gumbo was very good and that warm bread pudding was such a perfect finish to a Mardi Gras meal. Thank you, Anacapa, for once again providing a very festive and wonderful experience.

Birds in Paradise (Part 15) Nate and Jeanne Gowan It’s springtime in Corte Bella, and that means it’s bird nesting time. Birds will be busy preparing nests that come in many shapes and sizes. Birds use a variety of materials in nest construction, but all are designed to provide a safe space to incubate eggs and raise the young. Corte Bella is home to several species of hummingbirds. Most common are the Costa’s, easily identified by their purple gorget, and the Anna’s, which sport a bright fuchsia. Because hummingbirds make the smallest nests, it may be difficult to spot them. They typically build nests in sheltered trees or shrubs, weaving together twigs, plant fibers, leaves and spider Anna’s Hummingbird Nest web silk to form compact cups. Some nests are even engineered to have sides that stretch as the young grow. Orioles, another Corte Bella resident, are the weavers of the bird world. They construct pendant style nests that dangle from tree branches using whatever material is available. We were fortunate to watch a pair of Hooded Orioles build a nest in a palm tree in our backyard last spring. It was elaborately woven using fibers from

the palm leaves and attached to the underside of a large frond, hidden from predators and amazingly completed in one day! Some birds like woodpeckers, bluebirds and some owls, use holes in trees or saguaro cactus. Look for nests in vegetation like cattails or reeds along the golf course water holes, a perfect spot for many water birds. Raptors often choose utility poles to construct their nests. Last spring, we watched three Red-tailed Hawks fledge from a large nest on an electric tower along Route 303. Although the hawks’ nest was so large it was visible to the naked eye from Hooded Oriole’s Nest a distance, it can’t compare to Bald Eagles, the champion nest builders. One eagle’s nest found in Florida was measured at 10 feet wide, 20 feet deep and estimated to weigh over 4000 pounds! It was a permanent residence for this species as Eagles tend to use the same nest year after year, adding to it each season. Photos: Nate Gowan

Do major pruning of trees and shrubs; next chance is in August and September. Prune palm brown fronds that hang from 3:00 and 9:00 only. Fertilize palms.

Plant flowers ¼” above soil line.

Plant trees 1” to 2” above soil line.

• •

Fertilize citrus in pots.

Fertilize shrubs with granular 20-20-20 mix. The most important thing is lots of sulphur (½ cup per plant).

Change watering schedule to set for warmer weather.

Add water emitters as plants and trees grow; should be 3’-4’ apart.

For more blooms, fertilize with a solution of 0-45-0 mix.

Add iron to earth around Little John’s plants if they are looking a bit yellow. It’s okay to plant new flowers such as vinca, basil, chives, cilantro.

Plant shrubs ½” above soil line.

Transplant agave pups; dig up the pups, rest in shade for a few days, and plant. Remember that plants that are mature size need 2 emitters per plant.

Plant tomatoes mid-month to allow plenty time for roots before summer heat. Sow seeds bush beans, cucumbers, melons, okra, and summer squash. Choose nursery veggies that have 6 leaves on each plant and tomatoes & peppers that are wider than tall. Don’t buy if forming a fruit. Plant garlic after mid-month.

Corte Bella Pickleball Club Gives Back Mary Blome Corte Bella Pickleball Club members are involved in helping to grow the sport of Pickleball by supporting area youth players. This month, they sponsored twenty individual student athletes who signed up to play in the AAU Pickleball tournament in nearby Wickenberg.

These student athletes meet every Friday night at the Surprise city courts to participate in clinics and to play. The group is managed by parents and grandparents of these youths. Generous contributions by this group allowed these students get out of the house, off their screens, and begin to love the game. Corte Bella Pickleball rocks!

Corte Bella Golf Club News Tyson Siegler, Membership Director The Corte Bella Golf Club is offering a special Tuesday and Wednesday morning Resident rate of $85.00 for the month of March. This special rate is for a round of 18 holes including range balls and cart.

The golf course is thriving after the February rain and is ripe for some amazing warm-weather rounds. The practice facility is a great place to work on your swing. It’s open from dawn to dusk for a fee of $29.00, which includes unlimited balls for the entire day. We hope to see you all out and about enjoying March in Arizona!

Corte Bella Tennis Club News Donna Norton Martha peeked through the opening to the tennis court to discover if there was any chance she could find someone to play with while residing in Corte Bella for the coming month(s). She was delighted to discover that there was an open “welcome” from the drop-in group on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday led by Ken Egide. She brought her racket back to the court on Friday morning and joined the gang where both Insoon Park and Ken welcomed her to the group (see photo). Ken has been an integral part of welcoming tennis players to Corte Bella for years. Always present, he is quick to laugh, make comments in jest, and line up talents according to skill sets to ensure everyone has a good experience. He remembers names, games, and encourages those interested in learning new shots to attempt them while playing with the group. Martha walked away from her first day with the group declaring that she had new friends! We thank Ken for his continued work commitment to this wonderful effort to welcome new neighbors!
