ASSOCIATION
New Direction for Corte Bella Country Club Association On April 1, 2021, the Board of Directors held an organizational meeting and four newly-elected Directors were officially seated to the Board. All new directors fulfilled the requirements related to being listed on the liquor license, training, fingerprinting, and background checks, which are all a function of the governing documents, prior to being seated.
Mike Arrington, General Manager
During the organizational meeting, the directors organized and determined, by vote, who would be the officers of the association’s Board of Directors. Dave Saulnier remains as President while Michael McVeigh was elected to the Vice President position. The Treasurer position was filled by Dave Thomas and the Assistant Treasurer position was filled by Catherine Kelly. Evie Hansen was voted into the Secretary position. The Board also chose the Board Liaisons for each of the Corte Bella Committees which, all serve at the pleasure of the Board of Directors. The liaison positions were chosen with John Mestemacher as the Anacapa Advisory Group liaison while Dave Saulnier continues as the representative to the Architectural Review Committee. Buildings and Grounds is represented by Dave Thomas, as well as the Finance Committee, since he is the Board Treasurer. John Mestemacher will be the liaison to the Corte Bella Golf Club. Government Affairs liaison is Evie Hansen and Anthony Cash will be liaison to the Long Term Planning Committee. Neighborhood Awareness and Safety Committee
liaison is Catherine Kelly and Michael McVeigh will be liaison to the Technology Committee. Please support your Board of Directors. Let them know you appreciate the time and effort they put in on your behalf. They are working to govern this beautiful community and try to make your lifestyle the best and safest it can be. Best of luck to the Board of Directors as they navigate and negotiate important matters while discharging their fiduciary duties as directors. I look forward to serving them. You may contact these directors by email. Their email addresses are listed in the CB Times on page 6, Community Information.
From the Editor’s Desk As the warmer temperatures steadily approach (and life in Corte Bella will typically change a bit because of it), I do hope that everyone takes advantage of the many outdoor activities available in the area. Consider
Linda Wright, Editor CB Times a trip to the Desert Botanical Gardens, Taliesin West, World Wildlife Zoo and Aquarium, a hike on South Mountain, or a day at Lake Pleasant. There is much to do in our Phoenix metro area. Plan on a patio
lunch or dinner at the Anacapa. Join your friends and neighbors for a Happy Hour cocktail and enjoy the sunset. Quite often you’ll be able to see hot air balloons just off the Anacapa’s patio. The Corte Bella swimming pool and our sports courts are calling your name. With community life slowly (but surely) returning to a more normal “feel” and function, I send you my sincere best wishes for a healthy and memorable beginning to your summer. Stay positive, look out for each other, keep the faith and remain supportive of our lifestyle here in Corte Bella.

The Journey Continues for the CB Wine Lover on the Move Deborah Damery Lazear, CSW This is the last in the series of wine tasting experiences while escaping the heat of Arizona or going back home for the summer. Let’s start in Nebraska. There are 32 wineries and 200 vineyards producing 103,000 gallons of wine. The first vineyards were planted in 1870, but production stopped in 1910. Production resumed in 1994, and they welcome visitors. Travel the I-80 from Omaha, through Lincoln, west to North Platte with some side trips on SR-81 and SR-77. On these routes, you can visit 26 wineries if you dare! Take in the Toast Nebraska Wine Festival on May 1415 in Stinson Park. In this one stop, you can taste wine from 16 different local wineries. The grapes to look for are LeCrescent which are off-dry, semisweet white grapes with notes of stone fruit, peach, citrus, and pineapple. LaCrosse is also a semi-sweet white wine, excellent with chicken and pasta dishes. Brianna is a new grape from Minnesota, also with a tropical profile. Vignoles yields dry to sweet late-harvest wine similar to a German Spatlëse Riesling. Red wine grapes such as Frontenac and Chambourcin offer dry fullbody wines, but if it something lighter you want, try DeChaunac which is a Beaujolais-style medium body, low tannin wine. Rosé wine is made from the Marechal Foch grape. Here are a few award-winning wineries to look for: Cellar 426, Feather River Vineyards, James Arthur Vineyards, Miletta Vista Winery, Prairie Creek Vineyards, Hudson-Chatham Winery, and Comstock Wines. Be sure to call ahead to ensure they are open for tasting. Visit Nebraska Winery and Grape Growers Association (www.nebraskswines.com) to help plan your trip. Montana is well known for its outstanding scenery, but it has a growing wine industry also. With 53 vineyards in the most favorable sites near the Yellowstone River and Clark Fork, west of the Continental divide, you can taste some grapes not grown in the other areas we have covered. Notably, there is Petite Pearl, a red grape, which was much researched and developed through the MSU Ag Research Center (WARC). More well-known Frontenac and Marquette are grown here along with the white grapes LeCrescent, Frontenac Gris and St. Pepin. The whites sport high acidity making for excellent sparkling wines. Consider these regions and their wineries as you visit Montana: • • • • •
Dayton - Mission Mountain Winery Missoula - Ten Spoon Vineyard Victor - Hidden Legend Winery Miles City - Tongue River Winery Culbertson - Rolling Hills Winery
Wyoming has its majestic mountains, high plains, and wildlife but it also grows grapes for winemaking, jams, and jellies. The most popular red wine grape is Frontenac. Its close relative, Frontenac Gris, is gaining popularity as a white wine grape. Goshen and Platte Counties are central areas for grape growing. Cody, Wyoming, has Buffalo Jump Winery. Jackson Hole has the TMV Tasting Room and Jackson Hole Winery. Huntley has the most well-known Table Mountain Vineyards. Idaho has three American Viticultural Areas (AVA). You can mix and match wineries on 14 stops on the Sunnyslope Wine Trail in Southwest Idaho, off I-84. Here are a few highlights: •
Bitner Vineyards sits on a hill with a wonderful view of the Snake River Valley. When you visit there, ask Ron Bitner, a bee biologist, about his truffle trees and special truffle dog.
•
Parma Ridge Winery is a great stop to enjoy a variety of estate wines and small bites.
•
From Wilder, go north on R-95, east of I-84. Ste. Chappelle Winery, in the Snake River Valley AVA, is Idaho’s oldest winery producing Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. To get there, exit the I-84 at Moss and travel west on R-55.
There are many more wineries to visit so log on to www.visitidaho.org for more details and festival information. Colorado is famous for its Rocky Mountains and also some great wines. There are more than 110 producers offering wine-tasting rooms with glorious views. The soils of the Mesa Winds Farm and Winery are similar to those in Burgundy. You can stay overnight and pet their chubby baby-doll sheep. The Winery at the Holy Cross Abbey has something special for their visitors. You can taste their award winning (over 300 awards!) wines. This winery was started by the Benedictine Fathers. During a walk around this winery, you will see signs encouraging quiet contemplation. Other notable wineries are The Infinite Monkey Theorem, Augustina’s Winery, and Garfield Estates Vineyard and Winery. For more wineries, log on to www.colorado.com/food-wine. Grapes grown in Colorado include Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Viognier, Riesling, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. For a treat of a different kind, try the Chardonnay-apple blend. And so our journey to lesser-known wine regions is at an end. Next month, we are revisiting New Mexico, an easy drive from Corte Bella.

Corte Bella Vets Happenings Donna Norton, President
New Beginnings – Different Ideas – Change in Format Years ago, I sat in several meetings when Larry Leighton would ask the Corte Bella Vets Membership, “Do you want to be a bunch of pastry-eating, coffee-drinking friends… or something more?” I will quickly admit that I liked that idea. Although that goal was not as noble as Larry’s idea of helping veterans outside our gates. I sincerely believe that we can be both. We are in the closing chapters of our lives, and we need each other more than ever. Once in-person meetings are allowed within the HOA facilities, it is our hope to have afternoon meeting, either the first Wednesday or Thursday of the month, followed by the opportunity to
visit during Happy Hour at the Anacapa. I will be asking the membership to vote on this proposal at our April 13th meeting. We are also contemplating an “annual membership fee” of $20 to facilitate a quarterly “taco bar”, or some sort of quarterly appetizer for our gatherings. Meanwhile, we will continue with our ZOOM meetings. Our most recent Corte Bella Golf Tournament resulted in raising $16,010. We sincerely appreciate the generosity of our community, our golfers, our sponsors, and to all our volunteers who contributed to the success of this wonderful tournament. As we enter a new chapter of leadership, it is our hope that we will see veterans and our fellow non-veterans returning to the organization, to join us in fellowship, patriotism, and service to both ourselves and others. In closing, I am reminded of a quote from President Theodore Roosevelt, “Do what you can with all you have, wherever you are”.

SOuL Sisters’ Attic Success Steve Downing
Thank you, Corte Bella! Smiling Out Loud (SOuL) is excited to inform the Corte Bella community that the annual fundraising event, SOuL Sisters’ Attic, was an unqualified success. Thanks to the amazing support of the community (both in the form of wonderful donations and through shopping at the event), SOuL raised $5,001.60! All proceeds will be used to support worthy charity organizations here in the Northwest Valley such as the Valley View Food Bank, Streetlight USA, the Salvation Army, Ryan’s Case for Smiles and more. SOuL is once again so very grateful to the Corte Bella community for their generous donations of gently-used furniture, home furnishings, jewelry, accessories, and art work. The Attic sale was beautifully presented to our shoppers primarily because the quality of these “treasures” was exceptional. SOuL thanks every donor and everyone who came to browse and/or to purchase. Because of this continuing support, SOuL
can make a difference where it matters – helping those who are truly needy outside our gates. SOuL sisters appreciate you!

West Valley Photo Club News Chelle Mestemacher, WVPC The West Valley Photo Club March field trip took us to the Hassayampa River Preserve in Wickenburg, AZ. The preserve is “a birdwatcher’s paradise” and we have a number of members who are “birders”. The best part of visiting this venue is that Corte Bella’s own Nate Gowan, (“Birds in Paradise”, featured in each CB Times) is a member of the club, a volunteer at the preserve, and led our outing as our personal docent! Not being a birder, I heard more birds than I saw. Nate and others in the group spotted many feathered beauties and pointed them out to the rest of us. It’s always rewarding to have a new photography adventure! The West Valley Photo Club is a fun, informal group of shutterbugs of all levels. We are open to anyone in the Northwest Valley who is interested in the great hobby. There are a number of Corte Bella residents in the club. We would love for you to bring along your camera or cellphone and join us. Normally, we will meet the
fourth Tuesday of the month in the Bella Stanza Room, 6:30 P.M., which we anticipate happening once amenities begin to open for gatherings. For more information you can contact Don Jeffery, 920-252-0441, or myself at 816-309-3700.

Curb Appeal Ask Agnes The first thing a guest or visitor sees approaching your home is the front door. How does yours look? Is it faded, weathered, scratched or something else? Here are some facts you may not know about our Corte Bella doors. Each one has a serial number on the top edge. They are made by JELD-WEN. They are not cheap! They are made with fiberglass on the outside. Fiberglass is not treated the same way as wood. It is harmed by solvents, sanding, scraping and rough treatment. Treat it gently. The JELD-WEN company recommends cleaners and protectants such as you might use on a car. I treat my front door twice a year, in the spring and fall. I use Gel-Gloss to remove the dust and dirt. Then, I use a liquid car polish. Smooth it on, wipe off when dry. Your door’s appearance should look much improved. If your door has been treated poorly, you can find out how to restore it. For questions contact customerserviceagent@jeldwen.com, or call 1(800) 535-3936. You can also check out their website: jeld-wen.com.
Mirror, Mirror On the Wall Ask Agnes Are you getting tired of the look of your bathrooms? Need a redo? Think it’s going to cost a lot? We did too. We got bids on new counters, sinks, faucets, the works. Then we had a re-think about the cost. We started with the basics. We got a very reasonable bid for mirror framing. Those plain builder mirrors were just that…plain. We started by having the mirrors framed. There were lots of colors, styles and finishes available! In keeping with our over-all décor, we picked a wood-grain that looked kinda ‘beachy’. In a very short turn around time, we had the frames installed. Wowee! What a change! The old counters looked new, the old faucets looked right in place. We did nothing else. For the 3-digit cost of the mirror frames, our bathroom moved up 17 years. Why didn’t we do that when we built? I guess it wasn’t popular then. Before you commit to a big-bucks remodel, try framing the mirrors. If you’ve already remodeled, maybe you’ll think of adding frames. P.S. You’ll look younger too!

Corte Bella Adventure Group Steve Downing
Terrific Views Around Every Bend
Early April, a small contingent of our Adventure Group headed up to Northern Arizona. Our goal: to kayak the Colorado River from the Glen Canyon Dam to Lee’s Ferry. Lee’s Ferry is the first access to the river below the dam. Distance from Lee’s Ferry to the dam, via the Colorado river, is 15.6 miles. With Lee’s Ferry being the first access to the river, the outfitter does a backhaul by loading the kayaks and us on a boat taking us upriver for a beach drop off. The trip itself was splendid, and the beauty of Marble Canyon is magnificent. The water is cold, clear, flat, and moving along around 3 miles per hour. A highlight of this trip was the portion where we kayaked through Horseshoe Bend. There is the iconic photo published everywhere of Horseshoe Bend from the overlook near Page. Surprisingly, kayaking on the river, you really cannot tell you are in Horseshoe Bend except for the known landmarks. The first is a known area to beach the kayaks and take a short hike to see some petroglyphs. Rounding the bend, you can just barely make out the overlook area far above us. The wild horses that inhabit this area of the Colorado river

Before heading out on the backhaul, we were advised by the outfitter the winds would be picking up around 1:00 PM. Having experienced these winds on a prior trip, we already knew it would not be fun paddling into the wind. With this in mind, we did not make as many, or as long a stop, along the 11.5 miles of river. We finished our trip at Lee’s Ferry, thus missing the first rapids going into the Grand Canyon. It was interesting to see the groups getting ready to raft the Grand Canyon and all the supplies they have to take along. Well, back to the wind. We were off the river about 1:10 PM. Still, it was a beautiful day. Around 1:40 PM,
The first rapids entering the Grand Canyon when we were safely back to our lodging, the winds hit with a vengeance. What a relief to be sitting in the Lodge. This trip is available to people of all skill levels and available to anyone reading this article with the desire. To arrange a kayak rental and the backhaul up the river we recommend KayakTheColorado.com or KayakHorseshoeBend.com.
The most convenient lodging is Cliffdwellers Lodge, Lee’s Ferry Lodge at Vermillion Cliffs, and Marble Canyon Lodge. Thank you, Beth Downing, Bruce & Colleen Kelly, Frants & Nanette Madsen, Ken Tremaine and his son, Jay Tremaine, for wonderful company and shared spirit of Adventure.

What’s Happening in Corte Bella “Take it Easy” – TAD Eagles Tribute Concert Sunday, March 28th and Monday, March 29th
Corte Bella showed up in a big way for the TAD Tribute to the Eagles concert – all three performances were sold out. The Anacapa outside patio venue was a perfect venue for this event at this time of year. It was a bit toasty during the Monday afternoon performance, however. Watching the sunset during the evening performances was so enjoyable. How can you go wrong with the wonderful sound of this talented band in the background recreating music from the most popular band in rock and roll history.

The Bird Man of Corte Bella Deborah Lazear Have you noticed a quiet, unassuming man walking through Corte Bella carrying a camera with a lens the size of a small dog? That’s Nate Gowan, our resident bird expert. His bird dog, Kenzie, is often with him. After two outings with Nate to observe birds, I sat down with him to find out where he got his in-depth knowledge of birds, their calls, habits, and migration. Born in Pennsylvania, Nate spent lots of time on the family farm. His father and grandfather got him started appreciating nature and the birds around him. He still owns the farm with his sister. His father bought him his first single-lens reflex camera and a “birder” was born. Nate earned a four year degree in Wildlife Biology from Cornell. While studying, his summer job was with the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge. There he met his first mentor, “Smitty”, also a Cornell graduate. This job provided opportunities to study indepth the waterfowl of the area. Smitty also introduced Nate to photography, as he had a dark room in the basement of the Refuge office. Nate graduated in 1970 and took a job with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a biologist in northern Maine, 100 miles north of Bangor. Later, he switched jobs to join FMC Corporation, a chemical company near Buffalo, NY. He worked in the laboratory gaining experience in lab procedures. He also married and had two children. He was pegged as a natural leader and promoted out of the lab into a management position. The company sponsored his studies to get his MBA, a 3 1/2 year commitment at night school. Now single, Nate met Jeanne, and they married. They shared a love of nature and the Southwest. They moved to New Mexico and explored the country for several months before buying a home in Albuquerque. Nate was hired on by Pride Industries, an employer of people with disabilities, and imbedded at Intel as Director of Operations. He was responsible for keeping customers satisfied through high quality of the facilities management staff, some 500 strong. He took great pride (pun intended) in telling me about the full-page article of recognition in the Wall Street Journal about Pride Industries having won the Intel award for Preferred Quality Supplier. This was the first time this award was given to a service supplier. Jeanne joined Nate at the company in a human resources function to establish a new Intel facility. While in Albuquerque, they met a couple whose husband worked for the Forest Service, and their birding interest was piqued again. Now in the Southwest, this gave them the opportunity for a whole new group of birds to explore. After Nate retired, they traveled extensively in their motor coach. They spent four years in South Padre Island, TX and four in Tucson, AZ, both veritable birders paradises. They also made five cross-country trips to the farm in Pennsylvania.
In 2019, they found Corte Bella. Like so many of us, it was love at first sight. They bought their home on their first visit here. Linda Wright encouraged Nate and Jeanne to share their birding knowledge with Corte Bellans, using the CB Times as the conduit. They are well past two dozen beautifully photographed and written articles about our local birds. There is another big player in the CB Birders (as the group is called). Russ Harris, also an avid birder, has been getting out the word about the group expeditions through the CB Website. The CB Birders will meet at various times during the year, weather dependent. During spring and fall bird migration, they may meet every week. Less often in the summer heat and earlier too, at 4:00 AM! The birds don’t like the heat either. Check out their Facebook page, CB Birders. Request membership, click Join, and Nate will approve your request for membership, which is for CB residents only. You will learn resources used to identify birds and their calls on devices such as a smart phone. You’ll also get links to bird articles and events. Contact Nate at 505-328-4226 to learn more. Why birding? Nate says “The beauty and variety of colors, songs, intelligence, and adaptions to climate change make birds a fascinating study. Did you know that birds have been telling us for years that climate change is real, as evidenced through the changes in their migration?” Join Nate, Russ, and the other CB Birders to enjoy nature while exploring our community and the environs.

Birds in Paradise (Part 17) Nate and Jeanne Gowan Have you seen two big, all black birds flying around Corte Bella lately? They are not crows. Crows are found in most of North America, but are rare in this part of Arizona. The birds you see here are Common Ravens. They are much larger than a crow. Not just large but massive, with a thick neck, shaggy throat feathers, and a giant beak; their average wingspan is 46 inches. A pair have nested in a large tree near the Anacapa parking lot. By the time this article reaches publication, you might catch sight of the young nestlings. Most of the nest building is done by the female, breaking off sticks up to 3 feet long and an inch thick to make the nest base. The bottom is lined with mud, fur, bark, grass, and sometimes even trash. The completed nest can be 5 feet across and 2 feet high. Ravens are among the smartest of all birds. Their intelligence is often compared to that of dolphins and chimpanzees. Edgar Allan Poe clearly found them a little creepy. The captive Ravens at the Tower of London are beloved and perhaps a little feared. Legend has it that if they ever leave the tower, the British Empire will crumble. Native people of the Pacific Northwest regard the Raven as an incurable trickster, stealing salmon only to drop them in rivers all over the world. Native people in the Southwest call them “Brujo”, meaning witch or trickster. They are believed to practice black magic.
Ravens have followed people around for centuries in hopes of a quick meal. They will eat almost anything including carrion, mice, eggs, grasshoppers, beetles, scorpions, fish, grain, buds, berries, pet food and many types of human food including unattended picnic items and garbage. Corte Bella Pickleball Club News Mary Blome
Meet Kay Mueller, Pickle Ball Board Member-at-Large: I moved from Warren, Ohio to Glendale, Arizona in 1976. I worked at Phoenix General Hospital and Boswell Hospital as an X-ray technician in Special Procedures and in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab. I also worked as an Application Specialist for a company that sold Digital Imaging. We have 4 married Sons and 11 Grandchildren. We moved to Corte Bella in October 2009.
We now have more than 220 members. Despite the restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Pickleball Club was able to enjoy a pretty good fall, winter, and spring seasons. Many “snowbirds” were able to come back and play. We had skill drills for 3 months, and ladders for 4 months. We also held beginner clinics, once a month through April. We held our first “Black Light Pickle Ball” fun on Saturday, April, 10th and Sunday, April 11th. There were 35 participants for this event. We had glow tape, glow balls, music, and lots of fun.
I love playing Pickle Ball, doing Tai Chi, playing Bridge and Hand & Foot canasta with friends and neighbors. I am involved in SOuL, which is a great organization with a lot of amazing women. My husband Richard and I love our life in Corte Bella. It’s a wonderful community.
Corte Bella Golf Club News Tyson Siegler, Membership Director Wow, time has really flown by, and we are already making our way into the “dog days” of summer.
experience can be implemented to make the golf course as pleasing to the eye and to the player as possible.
Here at the golf club, we would like to introduce and welcome our new Director of Agronomy and Golf Course Superintendent, Jim Broughton. Jim joins our team with an impressive resume, including experience at TPC Scottsdale among other excellent facilities around the nation. We are excited to see how Jim’s
For the month of May, the golf club will offer Corte Bella residents a special rate of $65 for a round of golf, and in June, a rate of $49. Both those special rates include a cart and range balls. We hope to see all of you “summer warriors” out here at the golf club!

Corte Bella Tennis Club News Donna Norton
82 Years Young and Still in the Game
Insoon Parks checks her watch to make sure she arrives for the 7:00 AM start of drop-in tennis. She has always enjoyed getting the day started early, and she looks forward to the exercise. Since selling their home in Chicago, she has become an integral part of “Corte Bella Tennis.” She appreciates the opportunity to deal finesse shots to her opponents, and has been improving her game as she consistently plays on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. She has encouraged other ladies to show up and she celebrates the success of her fellow players, even in opposition situations. Elvis Presley’s quote seems to be appropriate here: “I believe the key to happiness is someone to love, something to do, and something to look forward to.” Playing tennis at Corte Bella represents two of these as she looks forward, and has a game most folks her age only dream of playing. If you are interested in joining the tennis group (if you have played before or never played), please contact Donna at 602-657-3949 to join the fun.
Each office is independently owned and operated.
