At Kerrytown Market & Shops, Everyday Wines will host a wine tasting and food pairing from 5-6:30 p.m. Artist Paul Hickman of Urban Ashes will give an art talk at 6:30 p.m. in Fustini’s Oils & Vinegars. There will be live music upstairs, and Ann Arbor’s favorite chalk artist, David Zinn, will create one of his sidewalk chalk drawings live onsite from 5-6:30 p.m. Zinn will also be onsite on Main and Liberty Streets from 7-9 p.m. completing another chalk drawing outside Lena Restaurant. Meanwhile, Bill’s Beer Garden, located in the parking lot of Downtown Home & Garden, welcomes art walkers with a $1.00 off one beer coupon that can be found on Artwalk Ann Arbor’s official event map (see pages 16-17).
Art Showcase Magazine and Ann Arbor State Bank have teamed up to bring a quality art walk back to the downtown Ann Arbor area. Artwalk Ann Arbor, a self-guided walking tour of 10 area art galleries, studios and shops spanning from Kerrytown to Main Street, happens June 21st from 5-9 p.m. The event hopes to attract art lovers of all ages to enjoy, browse and perhaps purchase art from the participating venues in town, many of whom are offering special promotions, sales, refreshments and entertainment to art walkers. “Who doesn’t love a good art walk on a warm summer evening?” asks event organizer Jonathan Himlin. “Downtown Ann Arbor has an abundance of fantastic art venues. It’s lively, filled with people who love art, and it’s very walkable! Artwalk Ann Arbor is an event that celebrates all these things,” Himlin says. Event sponsor Ann Arbor State Bank was eager to help get this new event off the ground in its first year. “Events like Artwalk Ann Arbor employ the power of art to encourage a more active downtown area,” says Ann Arbor State Bank Co-founder, President and Chief Operating Officer Peter Schork. “There is great value when local businesses band together to help one another and engage the public in new and creative ways. Everybody wins!”

THE SOUNDS & SIGHTS OF CHELSEA Thursday evenings, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, June 6 through August 15.
Children hop and spin to the beat of a Cajun rock band, drumbeats reverberating off the old brick wall of the courthouse building. Across Main Street and down one block, a large crowd lolls on the Library lawn, alternately groaning and howling at the antics of a fast-talking, professional comedian. And in the other direction, toward the railroad tracks, hundreds of people swarm street corners, alleyways and parking lots, grooving to a wide variety of free, live music, from country to bluegrass, folk, Latin, rock, blues and jazz. Must be Sounds & Sights on Thursday Nights!
BY SANDRA XENAKIS
You know that summer has arrived in Chelsea, Michigan when the popular open-air entertainment series hits the historic district on Thursday evenings, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. This year’s Sounds & Sights series, now in its ninth year, runs June 6 through August 15 (except for July 4). Ten downtown stage areas feature everything from music to dance, comedy, magic shows, clowns, juggling, and an Open Mic where you can demonstrate your own musical chops. In between acts, you can grab some food from Back to the Roots, Chelsea Alehouse, Cleary’s Pub, Ellie’s Chocolate Cafe, Glee Cake & Pastry, Jet’s Pizza, Mike’s Deli, Pancho Villa Mexican Restaurant, Seitz’s Tavern, Smokehouse 52 BBQ or Zou Zou’s Cafe. The 2013 lineup features over 100 performances throughout the summer, including more than 25 local favorites and 29 new acts making their Sounds & Sights debut. “We’re excited to welcome a lot of new talent this year, like Kari Holmes Band, dueling Pianos on Fire, Chelsea’s Jake Prince Trio, and a modern tap duo called Bang the Floor,” says co-organizer Craig Common. “There are also many stellar returning acts, including Creole Du Nord, Annie and Rod Capps, and crowd favorite Dorkestra.”

FESTIVAL FEATURE The Thursday night concert series seems to reach a crescendo at the Sounds & Sights Festival, this year on July 25, 26 and 27. Incorporating the sidewalk sale that began 38 years ago, the Festival now draws thousands of visitors to Chelsea and helps raise funds for the summerlong series. The two-day, three night event offers live music and a large social tent with beer and wine for sale and a $5 cover charge. The Festival also features free children’s entertainment and activities, chalk art demonstrations and lessons, a classic car show, a food court, pet parade, and open-air art market and demonstrations (see sidebar for more on the Chelsea Art Market.)
Owner of the top-rated Common Grill restaurant, Common is a familiar sight on Main Street on Thursday nights as he slips payment envelopes into the hands of performing artists. Bob Pierce, executive director of the Chelsea Chamber of Commerce, points out that the series builds on Chelsea’s reputation as an arts destination, and that paying the musicians is important. “We were committed to paying all performers right from the beginning, to demonstrate support for the arts,” he says. Sounds & Sights on Thursday Nights was born in 2004 when Common introduced the street entertainment concept to the former Retail Advisory Council. It started with one musical act in front of one downtown Chelsea venue each week, rotating through four locations. “This was a test run to see if there was interest,” says Pierce. “Our purpose was to create a vibrant event to draw people downtown. When we got a positive response, we expanded to multiple stages to entice visitors to move throughout the downtown area, introducing them to the range of merchants here.” In addition to a stunning variety of live music, Sounds & Sights features SculptureWalk Chelsea, a self-guided walking tour of twelve juried sculptures that remain in place for one year. The community arts project is sponsored by the Chelsea Downtown Development Authority (CDDA) in collaboration with the City of Chelsea, Chelsea District Library, and Chelsea Area Festivals & Events. River Gallery Fine Art & Exhibits manages the SculptureWalk project. Gallery director Patti Schwarz points out the new interactive component at this year’s SculptureWalk: QR codes next to all sculptures so that viewers, using their smart phones or tablets, have instant access to information about the artists and their work. There’s even an outdoor movie at dusk. Sponsored by SRSLY Cinema, free, teen-friendly films are shown on a 48-foot-wide screen at the Clocktower complex, with lawn seating and fresh-made popcorn. (SRSLY is a community coalition established to prevent destructive behavior in Chelsea youth.)

Music acts in the 2013 Sounds & Sights Festival social tent include Dragon Wagon and Bill Bynum and Company, plus Chelsea favorite Bull Halsey, on Thursday night; country bands Whitey Morgan and the 78’s and Annabelle Road on Friday night, and popular rock n’ roll band Fifty Amp Fuse on Saturday evening. Common has been impressed with the rising level of talent at Sounds & Sights over the years. Several acts that originally appeared at the Open Mic are now a part of the Thursday night lineup, and some of the Thursday night talent has moved to the Festival main stage. “The financial support we receive from our loyal sponsors allows us to put on a first class, free event,” Common says. “This community continues to embrace and support the arts. The quality of performers that come from all over Michigan to perform here is a testament to our success.” Pierce agrees. “We’ve been able to build sustainability through Singer/Songwriter Kari Holmes will perform a partnership between June 13th at the 2013 Sounds & Sights on private companies, Thursday Nights festival. (Photo courtesy of nonprofits, and government Kristen Fecker Peroni) here in Chelsea. It’s a pretty unique collaboration. We’re seeing more and more communities follow our model for this type of event.” For a complete schedule of events for the Sounds & Sights series and Festival, visit www.chelseafestivals.com or call Chelsea Area Festivals & Events, (734) 474-9178. PEOPLE IN ART
EXPLORING NEW SHAPES, COLORS Award-Winning Artist Nancy Feldkamp Continues Her Adventure in Art BY SANDRA XENAKIS
the AAWP exhibit of 1989. In addition, she has had several entries accepted by the Michigan Water Color Society and achieved signature membership in the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society. In 2005, after decades of living on a farm and almost 40 years of painting rural scenes, Feldkamp felt her work had grown “stale.” She started experimenting with new styles and subject matter, painting sheep and other farm animals surrounded by abstract design in shape and color. She is currently “exploring the realistic look of the countryside” in a Legacy Land Conservancy of Washtenaw County project, where local artists are selected and assigned to a rural property to paint. Her work has been published in Rockport Publishers collections entitled Watercolor, Painting Color, and The Collected Best of Watercolor. She also has a painting in In Drought Time: Scenes from Rural and Small Town Life (Mayapple Press, 2005). Feldkamp plans to continue painting the sheep series “and see where it takes me. . . The process of working from an idea to a complete painting is fascinating. My adventure in art has been long and exciting.” See Nancy Feldkamp’s work at the Chelsea Painters Fair, June 1 and 2, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Silver Maples of Chelsea courtyard, and at the “Legacy of the Land” exhibit, October 12, Matthaei Botanical Gardens in Ann Arbor. ASM If you’ve ever seen an unusual watercolor painting of sheep in a colorful, abstract context, you probably saw the work of Manchester artist Nancy Feldkamp. Feldkamp didn’t always paint abstracts. Like many beginning artists, she started out painting landscapes in a representational style. Her training began in the early 1970’s when she joined a weekly art class in Chelsea, taught by Betty Maxwell, an Ann Arbor artist. This group eventually became known as the Chelsealand Painters, later the Chelsea Painters. “Betty helped us learn to use acrylics and watercolor with the right tools to make a finished painting,” she recalls. “She offered us the use of her library of books by contemporary artists. We studied them closely and tried to paint in their style. She also encouraged us to visit exhibits and organized a trip to New York City to see the great paintings of the day and the past.” Her first major commission was a series of watercolors of unusual barns throughout the state, completed in 1987. Today, fifteen of the paintings still hang in the conference room of the Kellogg Biological Station, owned by Michigan State University, in Hickory Park, Michigan. This success boosted Feldkamp’s confidence as an artist, prompting her to enter juried local and national competitions. She started winning awards from the Chelsea Painters and Ann Arbor Women Painters (AAWP), where she is also a member. She won “Best of Show” in

CHELSEA ART MARKET
BY SANDRA XENAKIS
If you want to experience cool, hip, affordable fine art and fine craft from emerging artists, head to the Chelsea Art Market at the Sounds & Sights Festival, July 26-27, noon to 8 p.m. “Now they’re returning to the Midwest, showing us what they’ve learned. Young people are reclaiming this arena, expressing how they see art and themselves, how they dress and spend their time. They’re teaching us how to reinvent ourselves.”
Deb Greer is co-owner of the River Gallery, which manages the Chelsea Art Market. She said that booth fees were lowered this year to make them more accessible to less established artists: “We wanted to showcase a young, fresh look that reflects what’s going on in the art industry.” Greer believes that art is undergoing a process parallel to what’s happening in the locavore food and brewing industries. A locavore is a person who prefers eating food that is locally produced using safe, sustainable growing practices, rather than food produced by factory farms and shipped long distances. For several years, the Chelsea area has participated in the locavore movement through local farms and farmers’ markets, family-owned food businesses, wineries and, recently, a micro-brewery. “We have a generation of well educated young people who left the small towns and farms in this region to live in large metropolitan areas: Chicago, Boston, Brooklyn, London. They experienced life in an urban environment and learned skills and new ways of seeing their world,” said Greer.

Visitors to the Chelsea Art Market will be able to view artist demonstrations in clay sculpture; stained glass using a copper foil technique; painting; jewelry; pottery being made on a wheel; and small, colorful sculptures constructed from organic, translucent material. Demonstration artists will offer work for sale. Additional artists in booths will sell etchings, glass, jewelry, ceramics, wood, soap, handmade silk and vintage fabric flowers, and unusual, ethnic Romanian pottery. All artists in the Chelsea Art Market will be from the Midwest. “They’re part of this movement to reach back into our own talent and resources, to rediscover and nurture our local identity,” said Greer.
