AARP Smart Driver Course • Thursday, May 15; 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. AARP Smart Driver is the nation’s first and largest driver safety course designed especially for drivers age 50+. The course is intended to help drivers live more independently as they age and remain safe on today’s roads. Participant cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members. Participants must bring a drivers license and a check, made payable to AARP, to the session. Cash will not be accepted. Due to limited class size and supplies, walk-ins will not be admitted.

From the Manager’s Desk What a fortunate guy I am to be blessed with the opportunity to serve you. Yes, after 90 days on the job now, that is my assessment of Corte Bella. Of course that is only a general summary but overall, the positivity is endless around here. It is easy to see why success is a common denominator Mike Arrington General Manager amongst the residents. The “can do” attitude is alive and kicking. Yes there are those few exceptions but I have learned over the years that I cannot control everything. I am so pleased to be associated with such an exceptional community, Board and staff of team mates. As some of you know, one of my primary goals was to improve communication. I wanted to affect not just the communications going out to you but also the communication coming in. I wanted to hear what was on your minds and know how we could get

better as a team. One of my favorite sayings is “It does not have to be broken to fix it”. After a couple weekly messages to the community, I have received over a hundred email responses that are telling me exactly what I wanted to know. It seems you all have a lot to say. In addition, you have been welcoming, understanding, gracious and respectful. In an industry where the bad is commonly stated and the positives are scarcely mentioned, that is refreshing as well as productive. So, thank you to all who have taken the time to “weigh in” on things that just are not quite right in your world. I promise to always try to improve upon the status quo. I hope you can make it out to the town hall meeting with me on 30 April where I look forward to answerin g questions and listening to your comments so that I may do a better job for you. These meetings will be held on a monthly basis with the intent of keeping in close touch with each and every one of you. I understand that everyone is different and motivated by something that they hold special in their own heart. Therefore, I look forward to finding out what that one thing means to you and how I can make it even more special. Thanks for everything you do.

Government Affairs Committee Corte Bella Street Light Project Jim Dowen and Bob Baldesari

Background Corte Bella has 285 street lights that are owned and serviced by APS. While Corte Bella was being built, Pulte Homes, Inc., entered into (22) service agreements with APS to install and service street lights. As each community/section of Corte Bella was completed and the street lights were installed service agreements for the dusk-to-dawn services and the ‘use’ of the poles was executed. There were no upfront costs to the builder only monthly service agreement charges. As each agreement expires it reverts to a month-to-month payment with no increased monthly cost.

Present Situation The most recent (2011) costs for (22) service agreements to the CB-HOA is approximately $293,700 per year which includes the street light pole ‘use’ charges of approximately $175,500 per year. These charges are not a credit toward the purchase of the poles. At the present time (11) agreements have expired and (11) are still in place with the last one set to expire in September 2016.

GAC Plan of Action The Government Affairs Committee (GAC) is gathering, consolidating, reviewing and analyzing the information that is currently available. We plan to present a summary of updated information with options for the HOA Board and the Community to consider by the end of 2014 or early 2015.

A Reminder from Your ARC Architectural Review Committee (ARC) It is that time of year again – while some plants may be struggling from the winter doldrums, those pesky weeds seem almost indestructible. Sprinkle those red rocks with a product designed to stop those weeds right in their tracks. So talk to your gardener,

or someone at one of the hardware chains, to determine what is product is best for your plants and property. Besides, we can save trees if we don’t need the paper for violation notices. All kidding aside, please check the condition of your property and weed and replace plants where needed. Any questions about plant replacement, check with Heather in the HOA office or any ARC member.

Your Board is continuing their efforts in meeting community needs under your newly defined Vision “Corte Bella is committed

We reaffirm our pledge from last year to further improve community and Board cohesion, and to remain dedicated to our number one priority – meeting fiduciary responsibilities on behalf of the community. The Board is also working closely with our Management Company, First Service Residential (FSR) to improve our business relationship and foster better organizational services on behalf of Corte Bella residents. Initial FSR actions are paying early dividends – increased General Manager (GM) visibility to and availability for residents, added emphasis on HOA Accounting & Finance, Facilities, Spa & Fitness, Events Group and Anacapa management, and an improved teaming approach between FSR, the Board, Committees and HOA Departments. For example, a joint Finance and B&G team is working with FSR to evaluate and validate our current Reserve data. Other important organizational initiatives include: the Strategic Community Plan (SCP) to define the HOA’s short/medium/long term goals and strategy, proactively networking and establishing rapport with Government, various companies and agencies, and nearby communities to address Corte Bella concerns. The Board is pursuing another prime responsibility by updating older Policies (for example: Budget, Procurement, and Email Broadcast) and defining new ones (including Anacapa Governance, Corporate Records and more). We will continue other communication improvements – timely web and email news announcements (a single email list that automatically merges and updates both the web and FSR lists will soon be implemented), open forums at all Board meetings (with Q&A addendums for meeting minutes), further increased transparency of both the Board and GM with monthly minitown hall meetings and weekly GM newsletters, recognition of volunteers, and prompt attention to your queries. Residents may wonder about the “Reserve Assessment” portion of their quarterly HOA bill and what happens to that money. To estimate the cost to repair or replace our common area assets (e.g. roofs, equipment, carpets, roads) when they reach the end of their useful lives, the HOA contracts with a third party professional to prepare a Reserve Study. The resulting study of anticipated expenditures determines the annual amounts that need to be assessed. When coupled with earnings from invested funds, hopefully these amounts are sufficient to avoid future special assessments. So, how are these funds invested? The net accumulated reserve assessment funds are invested in accordance with our Investment Policy and Procedure FM-02 (Rev. A). The Finance Committee’s Investment Sub-Committee monitors our investments and provides the Board with quarterly reports and investment recommendations. Our investment policy is very conservative in order to protect principal amounts while at the same time attempting to generate adequate returns to meet the expenditure estimates of the Reserve Study. Our goals and objectives in order of priority according to our policy are safety, liquidity, yield, cost and diversity. Due to interest rates being controlled at historically low rates in recent years, yields have been very challenging, but safety and liquidity are higher priorities. As of February 28, 2014, the Reserve Fund totaled $3.25 million and is comprised of funds for the repair and replacement of existing assets ($3.00 million from reserve assessments plus earnings) and for the acquisition of new assets and improvements ($0.25 million from reserve fund resale fees and earnings). Funds are invested in Money Market Accounts, Bank Certificates of Deposit and Structured Certificates of Deposit. All investments are guaranteed by the FDIC. Structured CD’s provide some upside yield potential versus fixed rate CD’s and ours are indexed to the S&P 500 and “baskets” of certain stocks or commodities. Again, the principal is guaranteed and insured. The following pie chart reflects the investment allocation as of February 28, 2014.

Structured CD's

Although the Investment Sub-Committee has recently recommended purchasing some longer duration CD’s, the current recommendation is to remain fairly short term in duration, or in money market accounts, as we believe interest rates will increase over the next few years. Additionally, the rate spread between money market accounts and shorter duration CD’s does not warrant additional investment in CD’s at this time. Unfortunately, this results in historically low yields but does allow flexibility when interest rates return to historical norms. We have general guidelines as to when interest rate spreads warrant shifting from shorter to longer duration investments and are prepared to react accordingly. We review and update our Reserve Study annually and have an on-site asset review bi-annually, both by our third party contractor. Our Investment Policy and Procedure is designed to support the estimated reserve fund expenditures, assuring our HOA has the funding when it is needed to protect the infrastructure of our community and our home values. Look for a future article in the CB Times on the annual Reserve Fund study and analysis.

Kudos Korner Jim Williams Let me start by apologizing to the following three volunteers who were inadvertently left off the list of volunteers in the April 2013 issue. Dan Reynolds has been a stalwart volunteer with the Finance Committee (FC) for three years. Allie Bowling has been collecting pull-tabs (deposited in the Fitness Center water jug) for several years with proceeds going to St Mary’s Food Bank. And Muriel Valle – in addition to her listing under the Salvation Army Angel Tree, is also an active Corte Bella Events Group volunteer.

Again thanks for all of you do and for enhancing Corte Bella! FC members Dan Reynolds and Algis Valanciunas recently announced that they are leaving the FC after the 17 April meeting. Dan and Algis have been members of the FC team for three and two years respectively, and provided excellent support of budget development and accounting processes. We appreciate your efforts on behalf of the community, and all the best in your future. New FC members Ed Dupke and Laymond Harrier have volunteered to fill the open committee positions. Both bring impressive finance credentials to the committee. They were both approved by the FC and introduced at the March FC meeting. Thanks for stepping forward. Kudos and Welcome aboard!

BIKERS ON THE SIDEWALK

Bike riders should always ride their bikes in the street and not on the sidewalk. Riding on the sidewalk is dangerous to walkers/ joggers and to the biker. We want to keep everyone safe and this will help prevent accidents.

SPEEDING IN THE COMMUNITY

Speeding continues to be a problem in Corte Bella. The posted speed limit signs are 25 mph. Our streets are narrow with many curves . We rely on everyone to comply with this regulation to help keep everyone safe.

GOLF CROSSINGS

For safety measures we ask all golfers to comply with the golf crossing stop sign before they attempt to cross the street in their golf carts. This will help insure the safety of all. Vehicles have the right of way.

RESIDENT AND VISITOR MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

This system helps our Security Staff protect who enters Corte Bella by checking who should be granted admittance into Corte Bella. If you are not registered in the system please do so by signing up at the HOA office. If you are registered, you may wish to verify the information in the systems data base with the HOA to make sure it is complete and accurate. Speak with Valerie in the HOA office.

Strategic Community Plan (SCP) Update Jim Williams, President, Board of Directors The Strategic Community Plan (SCP) Team met 31 March and defined the following Mission Statement (listed in alphabetical order): Achieve the CBCCA Vision for the benefit of the Community members by: • Applying fair and impartial governance •

Ensuring sound and sustainable fiscal and operational practices

Developing and enhancing effective communications within and outside the Community

•

Preserving, maintaining, enhancing and protecting Community assets

Promoting a sense of community

Providing a broad array of programs, activities and amenities

The next SCP meeting is scheduled 10:00a.m. 25 April 2014 at the Social Building, Bella Stanza room. The team will start defining the Goals and Objectives needed to support your Vision, and the above Mission Statement. The Goals are the targets that make up the main body of the SCP, while the Objectives are the milestones that need to be met to achieve the Goals. Follow-on meetings in May and June will address development of strategy details, on a short, mid and long-term basis. The strategy is the means by which goals and objectives are accomplished. The SCP process has relied on community inputs from the SCP Survey and at meetings, and the experience and lessons learned from the SCP Team, from other communities and from the process Facilitator (FSR: Kirk Kowieski). Dan began his music career playing clarinet at the age of seven. He has performed in jazz clubs in the U.S., Mexico, and Europe and at many jazz festivals. Classically trained on clarinet at ASU, Dan has performed with the Arizona State University Symphony Orchestra, Scottsdale Symphony Orchestra, and the Glendale Community Orchestra. Alice has been in the Phoenix music scene for 30 years. As a performer, Alice has played along with such greats as Michael McDonald, Tom Scott, The Righteous Brothers, and Bonnie Raitt. The Heartbleed Bug Stan Sacha, Chair, Corte Bella Technology Committee You may have recently read about the “Heartbleed Bug”. If you haven’t, listen closely. This is very important, and there’s a very good chance that you have been affected by it. The Heartbleed Bug is a security vulnerability of many internet sites because they use the same security method. Simply put, a programmer made an innocent mistake that has had catastrophic implications. It allows hackers to steal your online passwords, and ultimately sensitive information about you and me. The bug has been around for years, but it hadn’t been discovered until recently by security watchdogs. Sadly, it has been recently reported that the National Security Agency (NSA) has exploited this vulnerability for years, but let’s whisper that topic offline, shall we? The world is now hard at work fixing their websites. The fix was quick and easy, and most websites have already applied the fix. However, you don’t know if the hackers already have your password, so here’s what you need to do:

In the Loop There are two topics of interest to be discussed this month, starting with an update of a prior column. The crossing of Williams Road to Deer Valley across the mighty Aqua Fria will probably be delayed until a Fall starting date. During pre-construction the contractor encountered an unmarked water main located on the Bob Rosenberg West side of 88th Avenue that will now have to be relocated to the east side of the road. You know all about the best laid plans of mice and men and all that, so enough said on this topic. One more road running east and west will be another reason to avoid Bell Road whenever possible. The main topic for the month is the Hall of Flame Museum of Firefighting located downtown near Papago Park. This museum is the largest museum in the world dedicated to firefighting, but for some reason is not that well known. The equipment on display ranges from bucket brigade, horse drawn, steam powered to modern day firefighting equipment. I found out about this museum

Create a list of all the websites where you use a login/password. Yes, I know – IT IS PAINFUL! Prioritize them based on the sensitivity and importance of the information you keep there. Do you use a common password for all sites? If so, then you are especially vulnerable because hackers will try your login/ password on all websites they try in the event that you might have an account there.

2. ONCE THE WEBSITE IS FIXED, CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD

Determine if each website is vulnerable, and whether they have applied the fix yet. If they have, change your password. through the AAA tour guide of Arizona, which does prove to be a handy tool when it comes to finding things of interest in an area. I never had any desire to become a firefighter but I certainly admire the dedication and bravery of the men and women who do this difficult and demanding job. There is a lot of equipment on display so allow enough time to wander and read the descriptions. In the back area there were displays of fire department patches from towns all over the United States. If your town or city is not represented you might want to write a letter to the local fire department and ask for a patch to present to the museum. If you have visitors from out of town this might be an interesting place to take them to show that Phoenix has something better than the world’s largest ball of twine. An update on my volunteer project will be coming to an article, sometime after the summer. This is definitely one of the more interesting things I’ve done in my life and I’m eager to share it with you when I become a little bit more entrenched. I’ve got another volunteer project to check out during April that looks promising. For all you people who volunteer your time, I have now come to appreciate your efforts. Corte Bella Fashion Show Janice Aiken What a beautiful day for a style show! Thanks to the fashion flair of Francine from Chico’s and the make-up talent of Bonnie from Mary Kay Cosmetics, the ladies of Corte Bella graced the runway with pizzazz. Vicki Faaborg, Kay Mueller, and Elaine Fletcher strolled the runway with a definite flair for fashion. Tracy Tuor, Evie Hanson, and Jolene Piaskowski stood out with looks to take them anywhere in the Valley from a Diamondbacks game to a wine event. Sue Dziegielewski, Jeanne Asmussen, and Hilda Furkert modeled both sporty and dressy outfits perfect for the variety of events in Corte Bella. Looking quite dashing in their tuxedos, Greg Dziegielewski and Joe Skozen lent a helping hand to the models. Behind the scenes, Paula Penkauskas and Donna Dusen coordinated the event ensuring that both guests and models enjoyed a perfect afternoon. Eileen Stomski-Gow, Nancy Healy, Celeste Nelson, Connie Adams, Pam Ablin, Janet McCoy, and Kay Leighton absolutely outdid themselves with the charming table decorations. A Taste Of Spring Regina Shanney-Saborsky Sponsored by SOUL (Smiling Out Loud) for the benefit of Eve’s Place, Spring 2014 was the setting for a wine extravaganza which took place in the homes of four SOUL members and neighbors. Each home was “ladied” by several SOUL volunteers and husbands and friends serving as bartenders. All volunteers donated homemade hors d’oeuvres and desserts (and I don’t think anyone “cheated” with a store bought item) to the delight of our participating friends and neighbors. The houses were decorated – yellow is our signature color – with flowers and raffle baskets towering to the ceilings. All in all over 350 people enjoyed the afternoon between the SOUL sisters and our neighbors and friends. As you walked down the street – house to house – there was music and more music from soulful ballads to steel drums. There was laughter and raffle tickets and smiles and a bit more laughter. Basket Case Janice Aiken Corte Bella resident, Connie Adams has always been on the lookout for a bargain, and not just one, but as many as she could gather. “Yes, I have always enjoyed the hunt at estate sales, garage sales, swap meets and retail stores for interesting stuff that would be handy to have or that would bring a smile to one’s face. I love nothing better than rising early to shop at estate sales and be the first customer of the day,” Connie said. Her shopping hobby resulted in a large collection of real treasurer! Connie was inspired to organize them into themed gift baskets and her brightly wrapped bundles are a regular feature at the Corte Bella Marketplace. Ever so crafty, Connie has a basket for every occasion: birthdays, get well, hostess, golf, wine, babies, girls’ night out, spa products, kitchen ware, patriotic, cooking, entertainment, and lots more. “I always have gift baskets available and I’ve been told by my friends that they LOVE to be surprised by the quantity and quality and price of what I’ve packed into them,” Adams said. Connie and her husband Mike are now permanent residents in Corte Bella, having moved here from Minnesota in 2004. When

Shalom Club & Ronald McDonald House Judy Rischall Members of the Shalom Club went to the Phoenix Children’s Hospital in March and delivered the stuffed animals and toys that they had collected at the Chanukah Party. Needless to say it was all greatly appreciated. From there they went to the Ronald McDonald House to prepare a meal for the families of the children who are hospitalized and staying at the house. The group prepared food for 30 adults and children. It was a long day but a very rewarding one. The menu consisted of chicken cacciatore, manicotti DONATED by Chef Dan, salad, homemade bread sticks, chicken fingers and tater tots for the kiddies with homemade cookies for dessert. The families were very grateful and appreciative and complimented our cooking. The cooks for the day were Susan Abramson, Kathie Bordman, Harriet Kessler, Edie Mozenter, Judy Rischall, Sandi Sussman, Ruth Ross, and Ellen Weinstein. They all chopped, sliced, cut, cleaned, put together, cleaned up, whatever it took to get the meal prepared and on the table. As you can see from the pictures it looks pretty good if they said so themselves. And, it was all delicious! The group thanks Ruth because without her expertise it might not have been so organized and gotten done in a timely manner. THANK YOU SO MUCH to those that donated the funds to help make this such a huge success. You helped feed families

Uncle Sam HAD You; Now the Corte Bella Vets WANT You! Larry Leighton The Corte Bella Vets Interest Group was formed by in March of 2014 by a group of military veterans who live in Corte Bella. Their first monthly meeting was held on April 8, and Retired Staff Sgt. Joseph Johnson, who is also known as the “Baby of Bataan” was the guest speaker. Joe enlisted in the Army in 1940 at age 14 and fought battles at Bataan and Corregidor. Joe was captured by the Japanese on May 6, 1942 and he was just16 years old, making him one of the youngest Prisoners of War in World War II. Joe’s stories kept the group’s attention for the entire meeting, as he recounted his experiences serving our country. Membership in Corte Bella Vets is open to men and women Veterans who served honorably in the ANY component of the seven Services including Active, National Guard, or Reserve.* The following mission statement was approved at the last organizational meeting, “Foster patriotism and good will toward the military community within

Road Trip Janice Aiken There was no fooling around on April 1st when 38 Corte Bella driving enthusiasts gathered in the parking lot for a road trip with the Drop Toppers Convertible Club. Their destination was South Mountain, an Arizona Park/Preserve of over 16,000 acres, south of downtown Phoenix. To avoid driving on the 101, the caravan snaked down the 303 South construction zone. Looks like they are making great progress! Trip leaders, Barb and Mike Yeager mapped out a route that allowed the participants to stay close together and to enjoy the leisurely and scenic drive. Upon arriving at the park, there was short orientation in the visitor’s center that has very creative and informative displays about the park and its indigenous inhabitants. Then off to the mountaintop. The group split into two, each taking a different branch of the long, winding and excellently maintained mountain road. The hairpin turns were tight, so the passenger had the best view, while the driver, with eyes on the road and hands on the wheel, enjoyed navigating around the curves. The Summit Road is 5.5 miles to Dobbins Lookout where visitors are treated to spectacular valley-wide views. It is really worth the trip to enjoy the views and to explore the park. Extensive information about South Mountain can be found on the phoenix. gov website. The wind-down drive culminated at a stop for lunch at an authentic Mexican style cantina. Los Dos Molinos, where they “don’t do mild” salsa had plenty of seating and service for the club members who had worked up a mighty thirst. The atmosphere was festive and there were howls of laughter when good-sport-that-he is, Alan McVey, had a large platter of enchiladas accidently dumped in his lap!

South Mountain Vista On the return trip, the caravan of convertibles captured the attention of onlookers. The vehicles, all shiny and topless, occupied by retirees sporting gray hair, no hair, hats with fake hair, cowboy Stetsons, safari hats, sunbonnets, scarves, and baseball caps, are as varied as their owners. It’s a colorful crowd, indeed. The Drop Topper Convertible Club, organized by Steve and Jackie Gnagi and Barb and Mike Yeager, now has approximately 150 resident members and 85 convertibles. Be a Traveler, Not a Sightseer John Eakins People travel for different reasons. One has a bucket list of places to see (like Alaska) and things to do (hang-gliding, anyone?). Another loves just escaping from home and being constantly on the move. You may hear the call of certain events or activities, such as Jimmy Buffet concerts or quilting conferences. Whatever your reason, get involved with the places you see and people you meet —be a traveler, not just a sightseer. Many people dismiss guided tours and cruises as simply sightseeing without involvement. But that doesn’t have to be true. Both offer many opportunities to interact with fellow travelers and with locals when in port or having free time during a tour. And don’t forget to chat with staff on the ship, in hotels, in restaurants, and in shops.

Whether you prefer to visit a single city for a week or to hit a town a day in an extended road trip, you still must choose whether to be a sightseer or an involved traveler. It is easier to immerse yourself in a place when you visit for a week, but only if you pull yourself away from the pool and don’t spend all your nights at touristy restaurants. And even on road trips, you can meet residents and learn local history in small-town museums or mainstreet eateries. Whether spending a week in Tahiti or taking a daytrip to Antelope Canyon, reading ahead of time about the place can make your trip more meaningful. (Everyone should see Antelope Canyon, and yes, you can do it in a day.) Of course, talking with locals about the place can give you much of its history and culture as well as provide you with new acquaintances. Remember, the trip is the event; the place you travel to is merely the excuse.

For some, the highlight of travel is returning home. If lucky, we’ll see home with new eyes opened by our travel, with a new appreciation, and with plans to incorporate things we experienced.

Spring Roll Ingredients d d d d d d d d

8 Rice paper wrappers 10 “ diameter 1/4 cup bean sprouts 1/4 # of baby spinach leaves 4 green onions, chopped 1 cucumber, peeled, seeded, julienned 1/4 cup fresh cilantro and/or mint, chopped 1/4 cup carrots, finely julienned on mandoline ½ red pepper, cleaned, thinly sliced

Dipping Sauce d d d d

1 oz lime juice 1 oz soy sauce 1/2 tsp fresh ginger, grated 1 oz rice vinegar

Preparation: 1. Toss together all ingredients together except wrappers in large bowl. 2. Submerge spring roll wrappers in hot water until pliable, about 15-30 seconds. (The rice paper will get sticky, so a pair of latex gloves is helpful when rolling) 3. Place wrapper on table or cutting board 4. Place about 2-3 tablespoons of mix in middle of wrapper. 5. Fold over the top edge of wrapper and pull back until a tight mound. 6. Fold in the edges and roll to end. The wrapper is sticky, so it will seal itself. 7. Repeat for the other rolls. 8. Arrange 4 plates, place 2 each on bed of spinach, Serve with dipping sauce and enjoy!

Background On Bev’s Recipe Gary & Bev Bair enjoy eating fine food – mostly prepared in their home by Bev! Married 45 years, it has always been the rule that Bev does the cooking and Gary handles the clean-up! One of Bev’s special recipes is her seafood fettucine which she has adapted from a couple of other recipes. As anyone who becomes proficient in cooking, a little of this, a lot of that makes for a great epicurean delight……. Some History of the dish: In 1914 Fettucine Alfredo was invented by Alfredo di Lelio in a restaurant named “Alfredo alla Scrofa” in Rome, it was based on the pasta dish called “Fettuccine al burro” which means Fettuccine with butter but di Lelio did some improvements by doubling the butter amount and it was added before and after fettuccine was placed in a bowl.

It is a very popular dish in Italy and most parts of Europe. The original name…. “Pasta al burro” is known in Southern parts of Italy but is known as “Pasta in bianco” in Northern parts of Italy. Also in Italy the traditional methods and ingredients were retained which means butter quantity is lesser and cream is rarely used. Alfredo’s (& Bev’s) creamy white sauce is usually made out of cheese and butter. Bev has cut her butter to just that used for sautéing the green onions and garlic. Traditionally, Alfredo pasta is just tossed in parmesan cheese and hot butter which in turn melts the cheese and coats the pasta but new methods such as my adapted recipe, adds cream to the dish. Fettucine Alfredo became really popular when the famous cofounders of United Artists Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks fell in love with the dish during their honeymoon in 1927. In return they had their photo taken while eating in the restaurant which Alfredo di Lelio proudly displayed in his restaurant; this then started attracting customers. Back in the United States Pickford and Fairbanks started to serve the dish to their friends which eventually lead to its popularity. Fettucine Alfredo has a very a tasty, creamy white sauce which can be enjoyed on its own or with ingredients such as vegetables, chicken or as Bev’s recipe calls for--various seafoods-- that easily makes for a complete meal. Seafood Fettuccine Ingredients (serves 6): •

2 tablespoons butter

•

¾ cups chopped green onions

•

4 garlic cloves, minced

•

½ pound medium uncooked shrimp

•

2 medium lobster tails, cut into small pieces

Preparation

•

½ pound crabmeat, shell pieces removed (I use canned Phillips lump crab meat—available at CostCo )

•

½ pound large sea scallops, cut in quarters, pat dry to absorb most of the liquid

Melt butter in a 12-inch nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add onions and garlic; saute 1 minute or until tender. Add shrimp, lobster and sea scallops; saute 3 minutes or until done. DO NOT OVERCOOK. Reduce heat to medium-low.

1 ¼ cups half-and-half

•

1 cup heavy cream

•

½ teaspoon salt

•

¼ teaspoon fresh ground pepper

•

1 cup fresh grated Parmigiano-Reggiano, divided

•

8 cups hot cooked fresh fettuccine (about 1 pound)

•

¼ cup chopped fresh Italian Parsley

Add half-and-half, heavy cream, salt/pepper, and crabmeat. Cook 3 minutes or until thoroughly heated, stirring constantly (do not boil). Gradually sprinkle ½ cup cheese over seafood mixture. Stirring constantly, cook 1 minute. Remove from heat. Combine pasta and seafood mixture in a large bowl or serving platter. Top with remaining cheese and parsley. For a lighter version, substitute 2 ¼ cups half-and-half instead of 1 ¼ cups half-and-half and 1 cup heavy cream. Works well both ways.

(7,458 yards; par 72) KAURI CLIFFS AT MATAURI BAY, NEW ZEALAND: Six holes on the David Harman-designed course at this five-star resort are played alongside plunging cliffs above the Pacific. (7,119 yards; par 72) FALSTERBO GOLFKLUBB, SWEDEN: Located at the tip of Sweden’s Falsterbo peninsula, the course is also frequented by birdwatchers. (6,391 yards; par 71) MISSION HILLS GOLF CLUB, CHINA: This 10-course resort on Hainan Island, China, which includes the award winning Brian Curley-designed Blackstone Course, is part of China’s massive Mission Hills golf complex. (7,800 yards; par 73) ELEA GOLF CLUB, CYPRUS: Located in Paphos, a World Heritage site, this new course overlooks the Mediterranean and wends its way through olive groves. (6,775 yards; par 71) I will also share with you a hand full of the swankiest courses, and will quote the thoughts of 3 of golf’s most notable alumni on their merits: Billionaire Herbert Kohler, 70, chairman and chief executive of plumbing empire Kohler, even owns two courses himself, Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run golf courses in Kohler,

Wisconsin, a company town founded in 1912. One of Kohler’s favorite courses: Pine Valley Golf Club in southwestern New Jersey. Known for its tough forest terrain and unforgiving rough, Pine Valley is considered by many to offer the ultimate golfing challenge. “Pine Valley has drama on every hole,” Kohler says. “No one can touch it.” Our second expert, Stewart Rahr, 63, is chief executive of New York-based pharmaceutical distributor Kinray and a member of the Forbes 400. Rahr has golfed around the globe, and counts two-time Masters Champion Phil Mickelson as a golf buddy. His all-time favorite course: Augusta National home of the annual Masters tournament since 1934. Formerly owned by casino billionaire Stephen Wynn, Shadow Creek now belongs to MGM Mirage. At $500 a round, it has the distinction of being the most expensive public course in the nation. Shadow Creek is what’s called a “match play” course; instead of competing for the lowest cumulative score, each hole is win-orlose, like a new poker hand. A player can always get back in the game. What more would you expect from Vegas!! However, The Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland, the 600-year-old birthplace of golf, may be the epicenter of swank in the minds of serious golfers; its 18 holes are set against the North Sea and offer rolling links and huge, wind-swept greens. While all of these destination Resort golf courses would make for a great vacation, we should consider how blessed we are to be living here in a place that others consider “a perfect vacation”. Pickleball News John Friesner In March, NBC ran a segment on the game of pickleball and stated that it is not only the fastest growing sport in the country but also in the world. Why? Because it can be played by all ages at all skill levels. Four pickleball courts fit into the footprint of one tennis court, so, if you are new to the game, you can get some good exercise, have fun and spend a lot less time chasing balls. Once your skill level improves, the game will pick up some pace and points will become longer with more consecutive shots being played. If you would like to investigate this sport, never played before, or maybe just batted the ball around a bit, the Corte Bella Pickleball Club will be sponsoring another clinic, for anyone in Corte Bella to attend, on Sunday, May 25th, at 10 am. Five gold, four silver and five bronze medals have been racked up by our members with one local tournament left. In the Grand Canyon Games, Rudy Black and Liz Kozloski won gold

in 3.0 women’s doubles and Liz and Jim Farley took silver in 3.0 mixed doubles. In the Fun in the Sun tourney, Rudy and Liz again took gold in women’s doubles; the author and Bob McQuiggan won gold in 4.0 men’s doubles; Liz and Jim took silver in mixed doubles and the author and Gwen Miller captured bronze in 4.0 mixed doubles. Considering that we have 103 members and Sun City West has 850…Corte Bella certainly held its own. Watch out for the greens they are very challenging... but in excellent condition... Golf shop very friendly and they always smile. You can’t beat this deal, enjoy your game”. “The course is really nice. Not to tight fairways but the greens are huge and undulating. You have to be accurate with your chip shots to end up below the hole and leave yourself a short putt. Don’t have a downhill putt or green side chip as impossible to keep it close to the hole if you don’t make the putt/shot. Tees and fairways are in great condition. Would definitely play again and well worth the price paid”. “Excellent golf course. The course is well designed and maintained. Ice and Water are located throughout the course. Greens are fast”. “My wife and I played Corte Bella on March 4th. I am a single digit handicap and she is a high handicapper yet we both enjoyed this course tremendously. I would even place it in the top ten of my golfing experience. Conditions of the course were immaculate: Fairways lush, greens medium fast, true, healthy and due to their undulating nature, challenging. Corte Bella is definitely not desert golf. I would classify it somewhere between parkland and links in design. Most of Corte Bella’s fairways are generous and forgiving

but several such as 17 require accuracy and a well thought-out strategy. Never did I feel a sense of boredom when standing on the tee. The design of the course varies from straight away holes to those with gently dog-legs. The variety of routings and beauty of each hole continually piqued my interest. Several of the greens had slight elevations placing a premium on accuracy of approaches. If I could find any criticism at all, it might be that some of the greenside bunkers could use additional sand. Homes line the fairways but do not encroach upon the course at all. Allow yourself time to prepare for your round and experience the topnotch practice facilities. The driving range is first class and the putting green is excellent. If you have an opportunity to play Corte Bella, do it”! One Plus Zero Equals a Championship Win Janice Aiken The 2014 Corte Bella MGA Golf Club Champion is Jeff Lane. This is the Second Club Championship Lane has won at Corte Bella Golf Club in addition to multiple Member-Member Champions titles. “I have had just one golf lesson in my playing career and my handicap is zero,” said Jeff in a recent interview.

Jeff attributes his playing success to his focused practice from 100 yards and in. His pre-game warm-up is a few 9 irons and a few drivers then it is off to the putting green. “I heard once where in a perfect par round score of 72, you have 14 drivers, 22 irons and 36 putts. Looks to me like putting is more important than driving”, he said with a smile. Jeff never took up golf seriously until 1995. Then in 1997 he organized a Golf League

called “Post Office Golf Association” here in Arizona. It was open to any postal employee and their friends and they played tournaments on Sundays around the Valley. He built the league up to over 170 members before handing it over to another member in 2005. For the past 4 years, Jeff has teamed with Mercedes Benz of Arrowhead in planning and executing Charity Golf Outings. Congratulations Jeff!

And the Winner Is... Janice Aiken The Corte Bella WGA Ladies Club Championship winner for 2014 is Bonnie Stenzel. The three-day golf event was held in March and a large field of lady golfers vied for prizes in four different divisions.

This is the first season that the championship flight played from 5200 yards. “It added a bit more challenge to the game but I think everyone enjoyed it. I know I did, except for that one shot that bounced off the barber pole and went straight out of bounds,” Bonnie said laughing.

Bonnie is no stranger to competitions. When she isn’t playing golf, she is warming up her vocal cords in preparation for a concert or a singing competition. Bonnie has performed at venues all around the West Valley area and is a featured soloist at the Cimarron Club. Bonnie won the Senior Idol Entertainer competition in 2009 and the 2013 Surprise Talent Contest. “I have been singing forever, but only began golfing in 1996 when my husband Tom insisted that I learn”, she said. Tom and Bonnie moved from Washington State to Corte Bella in 2007. She is often seen around the loop walking with Tippy, her Pomeranian, or peddling her bike for exercise with the same enthusiasm she puts into everything she does. Congratulations Bonnie.

Corte Bella Women’s Tennis Is Alive and Well! Vicki Faaborg, Member-At-Large, Corte Bella Tennis Club Women’s tennis in Corte Bella is thriving. Women’s teams who have joined with the West Valley Senior Women’s Tennis League travel to other tennis facilities in the West Valley, discover new friendships and improve their tennis skills. This is shown by the following articles written by the captains of two different levels of tennis teams from Corte Bella. These ladies represent Corte Bella and are having an amazingly fun time doing so.

The Vista Bellas, 4.0 Tennis Team Mary Nasca, Captain There is the loveliest women’s tennis league that has been organized in the West Valley for 14 years! The season runs from October to March. A player may enter at any time and the cost is minimal. What the West Valley Senior Women’s Tennis League has accomplished is to help us form strong tennis friendships throughout the area. If you are interested in be-coming part of a group, you should join in on the fun. We have teams at the 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 levels. I have been the captain of the Vista Bellas for two years along with Dolores Thain, from Trilogy, competing at the 4.0 level. We have combined forces with Trilogy women to de-velop an enjoyable, energetic team! We finished in first place the last two years and in third place this season!

The league play is each Friday at 11:00 AM at the various clubs in the valley within a half hour radius. We also practice and have a clinic with tennis pro, Vince LaRocca, several times each month. We look forward to our clinics with Vince at our Corte Bella courts. We have all enjoyed improvement under his direction. The players who are on our 4.0 Team, named the Vista Bellas, are: Ann Paulson, Lene Har-rier, Norma McAllister, Diane Baumgartner and Mary Nasca, all from Corte Bella. To round out the team, the players from Trilogy are: Dolores Thain, Maria Mustad, Sue Olson, Daren Crook, Denise Compensa, Dorothy Strand, Angie Miller, Carole Hogan and Kandy Ryan. The Corte Bellas, 3.5 Tennis Team Stephanie Tinsley, Captain The Corte Bellas is a 3.5 level ladies’ tennis team that was begun in 2007 by Denise Jacobs. Our team plays doubles matches on Fridays in the West Valley Senior Women’s Tennis League in-cluding the areas of Sun City Grand, Sun City West, Trilogy, Desert Trails, Surprise, Sun City and Pebble Creek. I took over as captain in 2008 and have enjoyed working with a great group of dedicated ladies ever since. This year there were 12 teams in our league, so we played 22 matches between October and March. We have a nice group of 14 ladies including Linda Sivakoff, Robin Culley, Elaine Uhren, Marya Butler, Julie Embleton, Ming Fu, Kathy Moody, Karen

Watkins, Lupe Howell, Sharon Wil-liams, Jan Harris, Jan Smith, Kay Mueller and myself (see photo). The West Valley Senior Women’s Tennis League is very competitive and this year we finished 3rd out of 12 teams which was very exciting considering the competition. Our best finish has been 2nd which we have done twice. Many friendships have evolved through this group as we have enjoyed supporting each other as we play our matches, sharing lunches together and getting together for our end of season gathering each year. It has been a pleasure being the captain of this team.
