ASSOCIATION
Your Vote Counts I think we can all agree that 2016 was one heck of a year as it related to elections, to say the least. Now that we are in a new year, it is that time of the year when everyone is considering who to vote for in the upcoming election that determines who is on the Corte Mike Arrington, Corte Bella Country Club Association, Inc. General Manager
Bella Board of Directors. Although the ballots are counted at the Annual Meeting on March 2nd, each resident is able to return their ballot to the HOA in advance by mail, thus, delivering their choice ahead of the meeting. This year’s volunteer candidates are Gary Ellwanger, David Ornstein, Donna Norton and Robert Rosenberg. Although there are only four openings, your vote is important for a few reasons. One, it helps to elect the Board of Directors and two, it counts towards quorum. You might say “If there are only four candidates and only four positions open, then why do I need to vote? The answer is that there is also an option to write in candidate names. So, although it is likely the four candidates will get elected, it is not guaranteed. Additionally, we must meet the Arizona Revised Statute requirements that at least 10% of the community submit ballots for our Annual Meeting and election to be officially recognized under the law. This means that if fewer than 10% of the homeowners at Corte Bella cast ballots, whether in person or by
8 | CB Times | The Official Community Magazine of Corte Bella
mail, the Annual Meeting does not meet the legal requirements set forth by the state and we must repeat the process again until quorum is achieved. This is not optional; it is required by law. The third reason to vote is to address another ballot question that will determine what happens to any excess funds left over from the 2016 operating capital fund. Instructions for this question are included on the ballot as it has been in the past. Also, there has been an important change in the Arizona state legal requirements that you should be aware of as potential voting homeowners. The change is as follows--in order for your ballot to be counted towards the election and quorum this year, you must place your address and signature on every single page, except the ballot page, and return it to the association either by mail in the return envelope provided or in person. This includes the return envelope which also must be signed and addressed. There is no exception to this law. Again, each and every page received including the return envelope, must be signed by an owner listed on the lot title and addressed showing your address of residence in Corte Bella. Obviously, this is an extremely important matter that warrants this reminder. So, please take the time to read all materials you receive and follow the instructions exactly as specified when voting. Lastly, thanks for participating in the important matter of community governance and taking the time to vote on the important issues on the ballot. You should be receiving your ballot and other additional voting materials and instructions any time in the mail. If you do not receive this mailing for whatever reason, you may obtain the package from the Corte Bella HOA Administrative Office on site at Corte Bella. Your vote does matter so please take the time to cast your very important ballot.
Board Talk Happy New Year to everyone! Lynne and I thoroughly enjoyed the 2016 Gala Dinner and Dance here at the Anacapa restaurant and Social Hall on New Year’s Eve. Our Lifestyle Manager, Pam Lawrence, and her team of volunteers and staff did an outstanding job on the Michael McVeigh, President, Board of Directors
decorations, theme and music. Chef Dan Haywood, Food and Banquet Manager, Pamela Barnard, and their wonderful staff were up to the task as well. They provided our guests with outstanding service throughout the evening. Ray Mar Productions surprised all of us by celebrating the New Year in three different time zones, starting on the east coast with the ball drop in New York, then Chicago and finishing with Arizona. Attendees were still dancing until 12:30 a.m. The Corte Bella Board of Director elections are fast approaching. The residents submitting interest forms are: Gary Ellwanger, David Ornstein, Donna Norton and Robert Rosenberg. Thanks to each of you for your willingness to serve our beautiful community. Meet and greet nights have already taken place on January 19th and 25th. We hope everyone had an opportunity to meet the candidates and ask them questions. The election results will be announced at the annual meeting on March 2nd. Committee Liaison’s or Committee Chairmen will make brief presentations on 2016 results and plans for 2017 at this meeting. We’ll also share the final 2016 financial results. In 2016, we had over 100 new residents move into Corte Bella. We hope you will attend this annual meeting and get to know who the fantastic volunteers are and what projects they are doing on our behalf. We are in the planning stages of the annual membership meeting agenda. If anyone has a specific item they would like to see on the agenda, please let us know. This is your meeting. Of course, we’ll have an open forum but some questions may require research prior to the meeting. PLEASE DON’T FORGET TO VOTE!

COMMITTEE
Like A Good Neighbor…. Steve DeBoer, Neighborhood Awareness and Safety Committee Neighbors In a recent writeup, the Neighborhood Awareness and Safety Committee was described as follows: “This committee serves at the pleasure of the Board of Directors. It is responsible for proactive and reactive review of community safety concerns and recommendations to the Board as it relates to current and prospective situations affecting the residents of the HOA. This committee consists of a maximum of 7 members and typically meets quarterly in open session.” One word in the committee’s title which might need some clarification is “neighborhood.” While the committee is involved in advising the Board of Directors on issues that affect neighborhood safety, it is not a “neighborhood watch program.” Instead, we try and provide information through the Board of Directors, open meetings and articles like this one so our neighbors can help themselves and each other. So what can you do? Get to know your neighbors--they can be a great ally in keeping everyone safe. For example; if you are going to be out of town let your neighbors know and ask them to keep an eye on your home. Make sure they know of any anticipated visits from service people while you are away and more importantly if no service visits are expected. Make sure they know how to contact you in an emergency. Maybe a neighbor could park their car in your driveway to give the appearance that someone is home. And please be a good neighbor and be prepared to return the favor.
A lot of folks in our community leave their garage doors open. Not necessarily on purpose but sometimes they just forget to close it. If you know someone like this, be a good neighbor and let them know their door is open. Actually, you may not realize it but as part of the CC&R Use Restrictions all residents are required to keep their garage doors closed “…except when entering or exiting the garage…” If you are one of those people who sometimes forget to close the garage door there is an additional way (beyond relying on neighbors) to assure it is closed. A number of different companies offer devices which can be installed on the garage door that will, after a set period of time, automatically close the garage door. In a way, Securitas is a neighbor; make sure they know about any guests or service providers you are expecting. Use the Resident and Visitor Management System to help Securitas help you. Pay attention to activities in your neighborhood for anything that looks suspicious. Remember if something does not look right it probably is not; use your gut feelings, if in doubt call 911. A quick check of the LexisNexis® Community Crime Map on the Corte Bella website (formally RAIDS Online) shows that our community is safer than most of the surrounding communities. However, that does not mean we are immune to risk, there is always some risk. It is easier to take a little extra effort up front to assure our safety than go through the trouble of trying to recover after a criminal act. Enjoying life in our great community is much easier if you take time to be prepared for any unforeseen eventuality.
Golf Cart Safety Robin Mandell It was observed over recent holiday vacations that kids, meaning anyone under the age of 18, were at the wheel of golf carts around the Corte Bella neighborhood. That is not advised. I have been a volunteer instructor of the AARP Safe Driver course for 9 years - it is one of my retirement projects. What I have learned while teaching this course: • Golf carts are licensed motor vehicles; they require a licensed driver at the wheel • Golf carts can be on roads that have a speed limit of 35 MPH or below (i.e. within Corte Bella and Sun City West). o They are forbidden on roads with a speed limit of 40 MPH or above (Deer Valley Road, Bell Road, Grand Ave.).
I have heard many stories over my years in AARP classes about individuals in local 55+ communities (Sun City, Sun City Grand) that have had devastating experiences with young people driving golf carts: if there is an accident/crash, insurance will not cover the damages because under-age drivers are not covered. Sometimes it is a great expense. Guess who pays for the damages - the grandparents. Golf carts are not a toy or an amusement car ride. PLEASE do not have your unlicensed grandkids/relatives drive around the community during the upcoming spring break -- or any time!

Corte Bella’s 1st Annual Christmas Golf Cart Parade 2016 Linda Wright If you happened to be anywhere near the Anacapa parking lot on the evening of this past December 14th, you were a witness to an unusual gathering of Corte Bella golf carts. Between 5:30 PM and 6:00 PM, fifteen golf carts and their respective owners arrived at the parking lot. Each cart was decorated beautifully and all entries were carefully judged for creativity by Pam Lawrence, Corte Bella’s Life Style Manager and Pamela Barnard, Anacapa Food and Beverage Manager. The entry of Larry and Kay Leighton was judged best of the parade. The Leighton’s amazing Sleigh Ride golf cart was inspirational. The competition was very stiff with golf carts themed from popular Disney movie, “Frozen” to a “Toys for Tots” extravaganza! The decorating skills of each golf cart owner were amazing and the cart lineup drew many admirers from the community. Congratulations to all the residents who participated. After the awarding of a $50 gift certificate to the winning cart, all the golf carts participated in a parade around the Corte Bella Loop with a side tour of the San Ramon Christmas Lights neighborhood. Corte Bella residents lined the sidewalks and cheered on the parade. It was a magical night and full of Christmas Cheer for both the parade participants and the spectators. At the parade end, the Anacapa presented a special buffet dinner that was filling and delicious.
This event will be an annual December HOA sponsored activity and there is great enthusiasm building to make this parade very special and a whole lot bigger. In fact, there is hope that every Corte Bella resident with a golf cart will participate. Not sure how to go about decorating your golf car with lights and such? Feel free to call Craig Orlopp at 623-523-3122 for tips on stringing lights on your cart. Here’s some advice on that subject---start looking for decorations now and come up with your theme. Join in the fun and help Corte Bella become famous for this parade along with the amazing Christmas Lights display in San Ramon.

Corte Bella Vets Expands Membership As we head into the New Year, the Corte Bella Vets want to invite ALL Corte Bella residents to join our group! Initially, we limited membership to full or part time residents who served honorably in any component (Active, National Guard, or Reserve) of our Nation’s Armed Forces and anyone who served honorably in the Armed Forces of our Nation’s Allies. We know there are many fellow residents who are not Veterans but firmly and wholeheartedly Support Our Troops and our Veterans and Veterans’ families. We want to offer you the opportunity to join our group. We meet on the second Tuesday of every month from 9:00 – 10:30 in the Social Hall. We generally have a guest speaker at least quarterly, more often during the fall to spring season. We also try to have at least one or two evening social events during the year. We host the annual HOA Sponsored Veterans Day Dinner and Dance which is open to ALL Corte Bella residents, not just Veterans. Our members also put up and take down the HOA provided and maintained American flags on our five holiday periods.
The Corte Bella Vets mission is to foster camaraderie among Veterans of the United States and her Allies, to undertake charitable and other projects on a state and local level, to promote patriotism, and most importantly, to provide service to all Veterans and their families. To support the projects and service support portions of our mission, we have one major fund raising event each year, our Charity Golf Tournament (open to the public), held here at the Corte Bella Golf Club, in early February and usually one or two smaller events throughout the year, and we ask for voluntary donations. There are NO DUES! In our first two years, we have raised and donated over $64,000 to help Arizona Veterans and Veterans’ Families. You can learn more about our group on our website: www.cortebellavets.org. If you’d like to join our group, you can send us an email to cortebellavets@yahoo.com or simply come to one of our monthly meetings and we will add you to the roster! We hope to see you soon!

It’s Our Honor Susan Howe Why would a grandmother of 9 take on flying WW II and Korean veterans to Washington, DC? Rolling back to before she was even born will give you the partial answer to that. Her grandparents were immigrants from Hungary and Germany. They came to America through Ellis Island, seeking a better way of life. Her father was born in the 1920’s and lived the life of a child of immigrants working their way up to a better life. They worked hard and prospered enough so they could buy a 1930 Ford for $65. As the years rolled by, her father worked hard to help support his parents and then WW II broke out and he signed up for the Army, wanting to fly, but ended up as a nosegunner on a B24, flying missions over the South Pacific Islands. He came home from war, married her mom, and the properous years of the 1950’s were the world this grandmother of 9 was brought into. Life was comfortable in her middle-class home in the San Francisco Bay Area. She married in the early 70’s, raised 3 children and sent them off to college and the Marines. The two sons married, had children and when their children were young, the two sons went to Iraq to fight a different kind of war than WW II.

And so, Honor Flight AZ was born in 2008. After many struggles in the beginning to be recognized as a legitimate nonprofit and finding just the right people to fill all of the many needs required to make Honor Flight trips to Washington, DC to honor our veterans, Honor Flight AZ was off the ground in 2009 and has successfully completed 61 trips since then. This incredible organization has had the privilege of taking almost 2000 WW II and Korean veterans to Washington, DC to honor them for their service. As the veterans travel they are thanked and applauded for their service. It is heartwarming to know that when they return home, they will have seen Americans in a slightly different light than is portrayed on television!
Her daughter married her high school sweet heart, who is presently a captain on a submarine. Her daughter-in-law was a medic in the Army in Europe. This grandmother of 9 pursued a career in nursing, retired in 2008, and wondered what to do next in life. One day at lunch, a friend introduced her to Honor Flight. After the mistreatment of the Vietnam veterans she witnessed in Berkeley and San Francisco, her father’s stories of WW II, and her children impacted by 9/11, this grandmother of 9 knew she had to do something to honor the WW II veterans who had fought for our freedoms 70+ years before. It was a way to bring honor to veterans of past wars and conflicts and to show honor to those who are presently serving.
Honor Flight AZ is a nonprofit organization started by Susan Howe (grandmother of 9) with the primary mission of sending our veterans to Washington, DC to see their Memorials. The WW II Memorial was not completed until 2004 and many of the WW II veterans had already passed away or were too infirmed to see their incredible memorial. And so Earl Morse, Honor Flight National Founder, decided to fly 12 WW II veterans to see their memorial. That was 2004. Honor Flight is now in over 40 states and has 135 hubs, each with the same mission-flying WW II, Korean, and some hubs are now sending Vietnam veterans. All trips are paid for by donations from private individuals, veteran organizations, philanthropic groups, and corporate donations. No money is received from the government. Summer Citizen Donna Norton
Get out of the heat at a reasonable cost…. Nestled in the beautiful Wasatch-Cache Valley of Utah, 542 miles from Corte Bella, sits Utah State University and the 40 year old “Summer Citizen Program.” The program offers a myriad of living options and activities including classes without tests, health clinics, bus tours, cards, tennis, golf, hiking, biking, bowling, photography and Broadway caliber plays and musicals for your enjoyment. Some of the living arrangements take you back to your youth, when finding quarters for the laundry added time to the task, but the overall experience is wonderful. The apartments are all furnished, with the high dollar places ($3100 pays for 80 days) being new and comfortable, while older places that allow pets ($2200 pays for 80 days) are furnished with items you may have given to your children years ago. Whatever the arrangement, you will meet new and interesting people that will become life long friends, while you pursue items that may be on your bucket list. You bring your own sheets, towels, pots/pans, plates or procure them at the local donation center known as Desert Industries, where forks go for $.10 and plates for $1.00. If you decide to make it an annual excursion, you are welcome to store them locally
(50 gallon box, $20 for the entire year) and it will be delivered to your apartment before you arrive. The temperatures are regularly 20+ degrees cooler, eateries cater to seniors looking for value, and the community of Logan, Utah rolls out the red carpet every year to the temporary residents who spend in excess of $4 million in their community. If you would like more information about the program please check out the website: http://summercitizens.usu.edu or view the KUTV news station video http://summercitizens.usu.edu/KUTV_NewsStory.cfm

Corte Bella Vets Dave Beams The December meeting of the Corte Bella Vets featured two excellent speakers. John Tokarz, a U. S. Army helicopter pilot, is the Legal Clinic Director of DAV Legal Services, and helps to coordinate many Arizona clinics. He utilizes volunteer attorneys to provide family law, divorce, child custody, bankruptcy, wills, and estate planning services, all at no cost to veterans. During the first year of the organization, four clinics were held; four years later, nineteen clinics were held which has helped over 1,100 veterans with legal challenges. Roger Ferland then spoke about a new program called Veteran Connect. It started in San Diego, CA, and provides help to veterans and their spouses by dialing 211. Whatever the question or need, someone will return the call and provide potential solutions to the problem. If anyone in Corte Bella has a skill that would help veterans, please contact Arizona Veterans Connect. The mission of the Corte Bella Vets is “To foster camaraderie among Veterans of the United States and her Allies, to undertake charitable and other projects on a state and local level, to promote patriotism, and most importantly, to provide service to all Veterans And their families.

Coyote Resentment Jerry Tinsley Did you ever notice when you encounter one of our close neighbors, the desert coyote, how they look at you with sort of a sneer seeming to resent our intrusion into their territory? Corte Bella was an Orange Grove for many years and, evidently, even before that a hangout for several coyote packs who have refused to move. Coyotes have lived in the desert for over two million years, so we really are the intruders. Their life span may be as much as ten to fourteen years, although few live that long due to predators, disease and automobiles. Coyotes live in family packs of six to nine members, and, after mating, usually remain monogamous. Mothers send fathers out to hunt for food to bring back to the family. Mothers may birth three to seven pups each year, but normally only one or two survive to adulthood. When Papa Coyote brings the evening meal home, Mama Coyote has him chew it first, so the pups can digest it. Coyote mating season in Arizona is January to March and gestation is about 62-65 days, so most births are between March and May. Pups are weaned at five to seven weeks, but stay with their parents, who teach them to hunt, for six to nine months. Within their first year, pups stake out their own territory and begin courting mates. They begin breeding in their second year. Families den in a burrow in the ground, often under a rock, tree or bush. They have been seen in Corte Bella culverts. Mothers “mark” their den to keep other coyotes away. They only use their den for birthing and raising pups, otherwise sleeping in the open, but they may use the same den year after year. Mama Coyote maintains the den and does not let Papa enter it. Coyotes will eat cactus fruit, mesquite beans, flowers, birds, rodents, lizards, snakes, turtles or insects. But, as we all know, they prefer small animals like rabbits or, when opportune, your small cat or dog. They are territorial within about a fifteen mile area. Males may travel up to fifteen miles to find food while females stay closer to home. Most hunting is done early morning
or late evening. Coyotes may run at speeds of forty miles per hour. They usually hunt alone or in pairs. You may notice the same coyote traveling along fixed routes or trails hunting prey. When hunting larger animals, they may hunt in a pack. This is when they are most dangerous. The best protection against coyotes is a stern voice or a soda can of pebbles to keep them away from you and your pets. They can leap an eight foot fence or wriggle through it. Many Corte Bella pet owners have installed two or three feet of wire mesh to prevent wriggling entries. They will not often jump a fence to catch prey as they know the difficulty of re-jumping while holding it. Coyotes need to fear humans, so do not be afraid to yell meanly or throw rocks at Wily Coyote when he (or she) gets too close. Because of their long heritage of living in the wild, coyotes cannot be domesticated, but they may mate with domestic dogs. The offspring are known as “coydogs.” Although they are quite rare, some people have said they make good pets. Coyote sounds which include howls, yelps, barks, and huffing, are more common in mating season, and each sound has its own meaning to the pack. Coyotes are not going to leave their favored territory of Corte Bella, so we need to adapt to them as they have adapted to us. Our advice: be friendly to your human neighbors, but not to your coyote neighbors. Just tolerate them, even if they resent you.

Hiking by Day and by Night Corte Bella Adventure Group Steve Downing The hike around Elephant Mountain is a study of desert contrasts. This trail took us across a wide flowing seasonal creek and into the riparian corridor. Beyond the creek we hiked through a series of foothills dotted with saguaro and cholla, into a steep sided wash, a dry rocky creek bed and over a mountain saddle with beautiful vistas. The climb to the saddle was a hard hike, but there isn’t a better way to view the Spur Cross Ranch Conservation area north of Cave Creek. Camelback Mountain and Piestewa Peak are easy to pick out from this vantage point. From the saddle it was a short ascending trail to the 800 year old Verde Hohokam Indian ruins. All that remains from this ancient fort is part of a single wall. Although time has taken its toll, much of the wall is still visible today. The wall only had to protect the saddle approach to the “fort” as the other three sides are bordered by sheer cliffs offering their own protection. As we do every year, a full moon hike is always planned. This year we changed locations and hiked the Deem Hill’s area North of Happy Valley and 55th Ave. Our December full moon was the third and final full moon of the Super moon trilogy, October, November and December of 2016. The night skies cooperated nicely with a clear sky. We walked along the trail by moonlight, not aided by
Heading off into the darkness artificial light. The 1970’s song Moon Shadow by Cat Stevens came to mind as our shadows were prominent in contrast. After reaching the ridgeline we had a nice view of the Valley lights. A bottle of wine was opened; our high tech lightweight wine glasses were unpacked (Dixie cups) and we celebrated the night beauty. Perhaps our next full moon hike will include cheese and crackers.

Tennis and Kids... Priceless! Joel Piaskowski The Corte Bella Tennis Club put the final touches on another excellent year with their traditional “Holiday Social” on December 17th. Pat and Otto Furuta graciously hosted approximately 50 members at their home on San Ramon Drive. With the heaters on the outside patio and the lights of San Ramon Drive glowing, a true Christmas back drop to the evening festivities were in place. The event also served as a community CBTC fund raising event. Again this year, the club chose The Ronald McDonald House Charities. This is the second year CBTC has helped out The Ronald McDonald House. The houses in Phoenix Patsy Kitts with her ugly and across the country serve sweater prize! as a welcoming “home-awayfrom-home” for families with children facing medical challenges, providing an atmosphere of comfort, hope and courage. This year, members donated in excess of $400.00 in grocery store gift cards to be used by the families staying in the house. A daily evening meal is provided to families. However, breakfast and lunches are the financial responsibility of the families. The grocery store gift cards help alleviate that burden.
The evening was enjoyed by all with a wonderful array of appetizers, main courses, side dishes, and of course, the delicious holiday desserts prepared by members. The events of the year for the Tennis Club were reviewed along with what is in store for 2017. By unanimous vote, Patsy Kitts was awarded the prestigious CBTC Ugly Sweater winner! There are three Ronald McDonald houses in the greater Phoenix area. They are located near state-of-the-art children’s hospitals so parents can spend valuable time with their children. Families come from around our state, our country and the world. If you are interested in learning more about the Ronald McDonald houses and what they do, you can visit www.rmhcphoenix.com, or call them at 602-264-2654. There are many ways to volunteer including the following: Cook dinner for families through the “Meals That Heal” program Volunteer at a house or special event Decorate/sponsor a room through the “Adopt-A-Room” program Collect pop tabs Donate items such as cleaning supplies, paper products, laundry detergent, bus passes, etc. The Tennis Club is always looking for new members and people who want to try out this popular sport. At any age, the game of tennis provides excellent physical activity and the CBTC has an awesome social aspect to the club. Information on CBTC is available on the tennis bulletin board located by the courts. The best part is that our annual membership dues are only $15.00! Have a great 2017!

Peg Ryer, Borghi Naser and Cathi Solla sharing good times!
Serving Those Who Serve Us Gayle Davis In mid-December, the Corte Bella Pickleball Club was privileged to host the 103 Squad of the Sun City West Fire Department in an instructional pickleball event. Diane Baumgartner, a high-level award winning player, came across some firefighters trying to play pickleball on a tennis court at the Williams Street park. Not having experience at playing the game, they were all over the tennis court volleying the ball as best they could on a court not meant for pickleball. Diane has always been looking for ways to involve groups of people in pickleball. When she came across these firefighters, it instantly came to her that this would be a perfect way to do just that. Says Diane, “I feel that since these fellows come to our service on a regular basis, that we could provide a service to them; that is, to offer our court usage in down time and to provide instruction to help them learn the game.” The event was organized and six firefighters, along with six Corte Bella Pickleball Club members, got together for a fun filled afternoon of pickleball. Rules and scoring were explained and before long, these firefighters were playing the game like pros. The day was such a success that we plan to host other area squads in the future. Here in Corte Bella, the pickleball courts are the place to be. As of the beginning of January, we currently have 178 active dues paying, fun loving Pickleball Club members. The snow birds are back and the courts are full, leaving some social time between games as members wait their turn in the lanai. Novice, intermediate and advanced players all share their love for the game. Evening and weekend play has become increasingly more popular. Sunday play usually follows the same seasonal start times as the
Pickleball Club, but is a bit more relaxed. Mary Luparello, who organizes Sunday play, polls the group of regulars to see what seasonal start time the majority would like to do and then emails everyone with the result. She keeps a detailed list of the regulars, and if anyone new shows up, she adds them to the list. Courts are cleaned the 3rd Sunday of every month, so depending upon the time of year and how fast the courts dry, Mary will send out an email to see how many people would like to play later in the day. In high season, we use four full courts, and have a few waiting to rotate in. In the summer, we actually have regulars who brave the heat and play year round, usually using 1 to 2 courts. Says Mary, “We are very welcoming to new people. We rotate them in and help them with the game. Some of our players will bring their families and friends who are visiting to play with us. Occasionally, people will stop by to observe the game and one of us will introduce ourselves to invite them to play, tell them about upcoming clinics and the pickle ball club.” Never played pickleball? Come visit the courts during member play in the morning to see what it’s all about. There will always be someone there to let you know the details. Clinics are regularly held so you can try it out. You don’t need to be a fireman to learn the game.
