Under third-year head coach Wendy Lawrence, the George Washington men’s squash team continues to rise to new heights and is poised to break into the top-20 in the national rankings for the first time in program history this season. The team has recruited three strong freshmen to join eight returning players.

The men’s team faces a challenging schedule of 18 regular-season matches in addition to the College Nationals in February at Yale. The regular season also includes matches against Brown, Williams, Dartmouth, Yale, Navy and some of the other top programs in the country.

Seventh-ranked U-19 freshman, Omar Sobhy, joins the team in the top ladder spot followed by sophomore Jose Calderon and senior captain Matt Grossman. Exeter standout, Player Haynes comes to GW along with freshman Sam Ehrlich, with hopes of cracking the top seven.

Returning sophomores Mike Nair, Brett Feldman, Sam Moreno and Scott West enter the season in the strong middle ladder spots along with junior co-captain, Mike Bower who is abroad until December.

Other returning players include sophomores Matt Nelson-Teutsch and Scott West.

The George Washington women’s squash team is looking to build on last season’s momentum, after finishing with a top-15 national ranking.

Head coach Maura Myers is entering her sixth season and has continued to establish her program as one that’s on the rise in college squash.

The Colonials lost only one member of its top nine and hopes that the continuity will lead to big results in 2010, its eighth year as a varsity program. The Colonials have four returning sophomores in the top nine including Lauren Mathieu, Caroline Shumway, Tiffany Hingley, and Paige Beaton. Senior Kate Bullard will take over the top spot for the Colonials, replacing Rachael Rayfield, who held the spot during her four seasons on Foggy Bottom.

Myers anticipates anticipates senior Chelsea Mouta, freshman Donna Farizan, and senior Mallory Ward to round out the top nine. The Colonials will also return juniors Eliza Ehrlich and T.T. Pasanen.

The Colonials will face off against a host of ranked opponents this season, including Haverford, at the Health and Wellness Center on February 13. With a strong core of returners, the Colonials should improve on the No. 15 ranking earned last season and look for a strong finish at the Howe Cup Team Championships, held Feb. 25-28 in New Haven, CT.

T H E G E O R G E WA S H I N G T O N U N I V E R S I T Y WENDY LAWRENCE / MEN’S HEAD COACH Wendy Lawrence is in her third season as head squash coach at GW. Lawrence joins the Colonials after 25 years of coaching many of the nations top nationally ranked juniors including four-time U.S. National Men’s Champion, Marty Clark.

She served as the Varsity Head Boys and Girls Coach at The Potomac School in McLean, VA, and led the teams to three Mid-Atlantic titles and a national ranking of No. 21. Additionally, Lawrence started Results Gym in Washington, DC in 2001 and served as the Director of Squash.

Lawrence began her squash career at Vassar College where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Political Science and played on both the varsity squash and tennis teams. She served as the Head Squash Coach at the Uptown Racquet Club in New York City while pursuing her professional squash tournament career. She moved to Washington, DC in 1981 where she was both General Manager and Head Squash Pro at Washington Sports Club. In 1984 she was nationally ranked No. 12 and was also No. 1 in the Washington, DC area for three years.

U.S. Squash awarded Lawrence the Wedgewood Trophy for her contributions to squash in the United States and the Feron Cup, the US Squash national award for sportsmanship. In 2006, she received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award for the National Capitol Squash Racquets Association. In 2005, she founded the DC Squash Academy, a non-profit organization that trains under-served elementary school children from DC public schools in squash and provides them with academic support and mentoring.

Lawrence is married to Mark Powden and has two teenage sons.

MAURA MYERS / WOMEN’S HEAD COACH Maura Myers is in her sixth season as head coach of the women’s squash team. Under the guidance of Myers, the GW squash program quickly established itself as an elite program. Myers was named the recipient of the Chaffee Award in 2008 and led her team to a final team ranking of 15th in 2009 and competed for the Walker Cup (C Division). The Chaffee Award is given to the coach whose team has demonstrated the qualities of competitiveness and court demeanor that characterized Clarence C. Chaffee.

In Myers’ debut year, the team set a record for the most wins in a season and it has finished the past four seasons ranked in the top 30 nationally. This includes finishing No. 22 in 2008 and No. 15 in 2009, the highest position in its brief history.

Myers is a 2004 graduate of Colby College (Waterville, ME) where she played squash for four years and served as team captain her senior season. Myers, a native of McLean, VA, and current resident of Washington, DC, was also a member of the field hockey team and the women’s rugby club team at Colby.
